Feb. 18 deadline is approaching to register to vote for March 17 primary Special Saturday, Feb. 15 office hours for voter registration HENNEPIN — Dan Kuhn, Putnam County Clerk and election authority, announced county residents must be registered to be eligible to vote on March 17.

“Any person who is 17 years old by the day of the general primary election on Tuesday, March 17, and 18 years old by the day of the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3, may register to vote through Tuesday, Feb. 18,” Kuhn stated.

Kuhn notes that recent state legislation provided by P.A. 98-0051 changed the age requirement for eligibility to vote in the General Primary Election.

Kuhn further notes the following:

The Feb. 18 voter registration deadline for the March 17 primary is fast approaching. The Putnam County Courthouse in Hennepin is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The county clerk’s office will also be open on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon for voter registration only.

The Putnam County Courthouse is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The county clerk’s office will also be open on Saturday, Feb. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon for voter registration only.

Absentee voting in progress for primary HENNEPIN — Absentee voting for the general primary election on March 17 is now underway, according to Dan Kuhn, Putnam County clerk and election authority.

Kuhn said any registered voter who expects to be absent from the county on March 17 may make application by mail or in person to the county clerk to receive an official ballot.

“Anyone wishing to vote absentee by mail may call the county clerk’s office at 815-925-7129 and request an

application,” Kuhn said.

An official ballot will be mailed after the correctly completed, signed application is returned to the county clerk’s office, he said.

Kuhn said the last day for the county clerk’s office to mail an absentee ballot is March 12, so correctly completed applications for absentee ballots must be received no later than March 12.

Anyone wishing to vote absentee in person may stop by the county clerk’s office between the hours of

9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The county clerk’s office will also be open on Saturday, March 14, for in-person absentee voting from 9 a.m. to noon.

The last day for in-person absentee voting is Monday, March 16, during regular office hours.

Early voting for primary is underway at clerk’s office HENNEPIN — Putnam County Clerk Dan Kuhn announces that early voting for all county precincts is underway in his office at the courthouse at 120 N. Fourth St. in Hennepin.

Early voting will continue through Monday, March 16, on weekdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Kuhn stated.

Also, early voting will take place

on Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Kuhn said any voter who is a valid registrant in Putnam County may vote during the early voting period after showing proper identification.

“However, any vote cast is final and may not be revoked. As a result, the early voter is not eligible to cast

a vote on Election Day,” Kuhn said.

The date of the actual primary is Thursday, March 17. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. across the county.

People who have any questions or would like further information on early voting may contact the Putnam County Clerk’s Office at 815925-7129.

Military mom’s ‘Boot Memorial’ coming to St. Bede Academy alum asks for military boot donations locally, across U.S.

Boot donations requested Theresa (Irizarry) Johnson is asking area residents, Facebook friends, soldiers and families on military bases and veterans to donate used military boots for a memorial she launched in 2012 on a military base and she is bringing to St. Bede on June 13.

Johnson and St. Bede are preparing for the first Boot Memorial Hero and Remembrance Run at a civilian site.

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media A St. Bede graduate and military wife needs help to show compassion not only for families of fallen soldiers and but also for veterans who lost buddies while in the military.

One of the nation’s largest memorials to fallen soldiers at war or in peacetime is coming to St. Bede Academy on June 13.

But Theresa (Irizarry) Johnson, who curates the exhibit, needs some unusual donations from veterans here and throughout the United States. She wants to collect more than 8,000 combat boots and other military-issue boots for a ceremony and run in late spring west of Peru.

Johnson started the Boot Memorial while her husband was stationed on military bases. She decided to collect military boots, and place into each a photograph, autobiographical information and flag for military personnel who died in service to the country since the early 1990s and Middle East conflicts.

She launched the memorial on her own while working in 2012 for Fish-

“I wanted to also raise awareness for Fisher House and what they did.

They help military families who are going through a medical crisis,” she said, referring to how she launched the boot memorial and a Fisher House fundraiser simultaneously.

The Fisher House Foundation has 85 multi-family temporary homes, two in Alaska, two in Hawaii and two in Germany. The foundation has one in Dover, Del., set up and restricted solely as a private transitional loca-

tion for the families of the fallen.

Johnson witnessed the suffering of the thousands of soldiers who lost friends in the military or saw their buddies killed and never had a chance to deal with it or say goodbye.

“They didn’t get a chance to process the loss because you need to stay mission-focused — if you don’t, you might be next,” she said.

Since there were various Fisher House locations in the United States, Johnson moved her event, the Hero and Remembrance Run, Walk or Roll, and boot memorial as her husband,

Leon, was moved to different bases.

But she began formulating the event several years before that. In 2005 and 2006, when she and her husband were there, her husband and an entire division from Fort Campbell, Ky., deployed to Iraq, and 105 of the soldiers were killed. Additional deaths hit close to home, such as her son’s best friend dying in 2007, and her son’s unit losing two pilots.

Her husband, Leon, also spent his career with wounded soldiers and their comrades as a combat medic.

He recently retired, as a command sergeant major, after 28 years of service, and he runs a middle school Junior ROTC program.

She and her husband got to know a lot of soldiers who carried on with their lives and their service without grieving. She spent time with a lot soldiers having mental difficulties.

Modest dual credit course fees being recommended at IVCC

OGLESBY — High school students in certain Illinois Valley Community College dual credit courses may pay as little as $30 per class next fall, the board’s audit finance committee learned Jan. 28.

IVCC’s administration is recommending the $30 fee for courses taught at high schools by qualified high school instructors.

In addition, the administration will recommend high school students enrolled in any IVCC online course pay just 75 percent of the tuition rate or about $95 per credit hour.

Courses taught at high schools by IVCC instructors will maintain the 75 percent tuition rate, and students qualifying for Free and Reduced Lunch will continue to pay just the $5 registration fee.

IVCC offers dual credit at 17 of its 21 district high schools, and about 10 percent of its enrollment is generated by dual credit.

For the second straight year, the administration is recommending no tuition increase. At its 6:30 p.m.

Thursday, Feb. 13, meeting, the full board will consider a plan to freeze for a third consecutive year the com-

bined tuition and universal fee rate at $133 per credit hour for 2020-21.

The figure places IVCC favorably among 10 other colleges in its “super peer group”: Black Hawk, Heartland, Highland, Kankakee, Kishwaukee, Lake Land, Lewis & Clark, John A. Logan, Richland and Sauk Valley.

Average 2020 tuition and fees for the group is $136 per credit hour while the state average for all 39 community colleges is $147.

In other action, audit finance learned the college will propose changes to 77 course fees: 60 increas-

es, 11 new courses, one decrease, plus the assignment of a course fee to five existing courses.

Audit finance also reviewed the proposed budget for 42 active student organizations. The proposed allocation is $102,914, down from $129,689 in 2017-18 and $112,604 in 2018-19.

Cheryl Roelfsema, IVCC vice president for Business Services and Finance, presented a three-year financial plan that forecasts level state funding and 2.5 percent annual increases in property taxes based on increased EAV.

Johnson had a lot of boots before beginning to network online and through friends and colleagues to collect boots. She’s reaching out to friends and military families nationwide, and she is planning to pick up military boots at camps including Fort Campbell and Fort Hood as she zigzags her way from her home in Texas to St. Bede.

“We’re creating a display to stay in

the Illinois Valley area,” Johnson said.

But she needs more military boots — and she doesn’t think people need to go out and buy new ones. She said from experience a lot of veterans still have at least one pair of boots.

In Hawaii, a soldier heard about the event and showed up with 10 pairs of worn boots in the back of his pickup.

Jon was born March 10, 1964, in Spring Valley to Roy and Judy (Kays) Waldschmidt.

MCNABB — Scott Joseph Malone, 73, of McNabb passed away at 5:10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2020, at his home in McNabb.

Scott was born April 22, 1946, in Spring Valley to Joseph and Gladys (Green) Malone. He married Janet Pease on June 5, 1967, in Sparland. She survives.

Scott dedicated his life to the service of our country, spending 26 years enlisted in the Navy and retired as a master chief in 1991. Scott later worked as a road construction laborer in the Central Illinois area until retiring in 2001.

He loved fishing, hunting, camping, and enjoyed the outdoors and nature.

Scott was a member of the Henry American Legion and VFW. Also surviving are his children, Scott (Samai) Malone II of Fort Bragg, N.C., Lois Daniels of Ridgeville, S.C., and Amy (Matthew) Lee and William (fiancée Terra Presley) Malone, both

Thomas Twardowski achieves Eagle Scout rank

MARK — Thomas Twardowski of Mark has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Twardowski, a freshman at Putnam County High School, is a member of Granville Troop 1093. He is the son of Joseph and Aimee Twardowski.

Twardowski’s project name was “Get Well Soon Comfort Bears.” He set up donation boxes at several locations in Putnam County to collect new stuffed animals and raised money to purchase new stuffed animals for the Children’s Hospital at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. He collected/purchased more than 800 stuffed animals. He chose this as his project because he has been a patient at the hospital two times and wanted to give back to the hospital.

Festival 56 in Princeton will present ‘Elvis Through the Years’ tribute show

PRINCETON — “Elvis Through the Years” will rock the Festival 56 stage once again at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Grace Performing Arts Center in Princeton.

This tribute to the King of Rock and Roll features father and son duo, John and Jonathan Lyons.

Jonathan, 21, returns to perform the music of a young Elvis, while his dad, John, takes the spotlight

Panthers grind out win over Little Giants

GRANVILLE — Despite having several players playing both the sophomore and varsity games, the DePue boys basketball team showed no signs of being tired Feb. 5, but in the end, Putnam County ground out a hard-fought 41-27 victory in a Tri-County Conference game.

“You got to give DePue credit,” Putnam County coach Harold Fay said. “We thought if we pushed the tempo, we might be able to tire them a bit with kids playing both games, but they just kept hanging around and hanging around.”

Andres Moreno hit the first shot of the game and gave the Little Giants the early lead.

A couple of possessions later, Luke Pederson hit a 3-pointer before Jacob Williams hit a jumper from the free throw line for a 5-4 Panthers lead.

With the first quarter coming to a close, Williams drained a 3-pointer from the corner to give Putnam County an 8-4 lead.

“I was joking with Jakob Pyszka from Putnam County saying we’re going to stop you tonight,” Little Giants coach Charlie Klinefelter said, laughing.

“He had 20-some points the first time we played them. The problem is the (Jacob) Williams kid killed us instead.”

To start the second quarter, Williams again hit a 3-pointer and pushed the lead to 11-4.

But the Little Giants started picking things up at both ends of the court.

Oscar Ramirez snuck into the lane and grabbed an offensive rebound and got a bucket along with the foul for a three-point play.

Shortly after that, Moreno hit a jumper from 17 feet and followed with a putback that cut the PC lead to 12-11.

“Andres is really playing well,” Klinefelter said. “He had 19 in the sophomore game and then hit some shots in the varsity and had a great night rebounding as well.”

But Putnam County finished the first half on a 6-1 run led by Williams, who hit a short jumper to give the

“Jacob did a nice job tonight with 11 points in the first half,” Fay said.

“He caught the ball in rhythm and was hitting shots off balance. We needed that because DePue refused to go away and kept fighting.”

The Little Giants started the second half strong with Mario Quintana driving and hitting a pull-up jumper on DePue’s first possession.

Anthony Tyson followed with a tough layup among three defenders that cut the Putnam County

lead to 18-17.

Right after that, Putnam County got back-to-back 3-pointers from Williams and Pederson to push the lead to 24-17.

Jorge Escobar converted a fastbreak layup for the Little Giants to make it 24-21 Putnam County, but the Panthers once again finished strong with Mathew Liebhart hitting a shot in the paint and Williams hitting a 3-pointer for a 32-23 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Putnam County started to pull

away a little bit in the final eight minutes. Jackson McDonald scored off a move in the post and Liebhart made a shot from the free throw line to extend the lead to 36-23.

Moreno hit another pull-up jumper, but McDonald hit another shot in the paint and Stephen Mecagni hit a bunny shot as Putnam County came away with the 41-27 victory.

The Panthers were led by Williams with 15 points, while the Little Giants were led by Moreno with eight points and 11 rebounds.

SITE MAINTENANCE PERSON - PART TIME

ROUTE DELIVERY DRIVER Our Peru, IL Branch has a career opportunity for an enthusiastic, reliable, and safety-conscious individual.

Duties of this position include the safe, efficient, and courteous delivery of electrical supplies, materials, and parts to our established and respected customers and assisting with various warehouse functions.

The successful candidate will be an effective communicator with a service and team orientation, have a friendly disposition and excellent work ethic, be able to possess a valid Class C driver's license, have a history of safe driving, have the physical ability to frequently lift up to 75 lbs, and have experience in or familiarity with warehouse and delivery operations.

Putnam County Conservation District is looking for a site maintenance person part-time that will lead to full-time site position.

Hours: Monday through Friday with the possibility of weekends 24-28 hours a week to start.

Wage: starting at $15.00 an hour during probationary period with regular evaluations.

Benefits: IMRF retirement benefits with 1000 hours of work each year.

Must pass a drug test.

Applicant must possess a valid driver's license, must be able to lift 50+ pounds. Be able to use a chain saw, pole saw, string trimmers and run a zero-turn mower and full-size tractor. Must also able to walk up to two miles along trails while carrying equipment and be able to work independently.

Education: High school grad or equivalent.

Skills: Basic equipment maintenance knowledge, some carpenter skills a plus, basic computer knowledge and keep good records.

Must be comfortable working in all weather and with the public.

LEGAL NOTICE Village of Hennepin's Request for Proposals to Purchase Village Owned Real Estate The Village of Hennepin (the "Village") owns real estate commonly known as 511 E. Sycamore St. & legally described as the South 130 feet of Lot 7 in Block 20 in the Village of Hennepin, except coal and minerals and the right to mine and remove the same situated in Putnam County, Illinois (the "Real Estate").

The Village is accepting proposals from any party interested in buying the Real Estate.

Sealed proposals for buying the Real Estate shall be submitted to: Hennepin Village Clerk, 627 E. High St., Hennepin, IL 61327 on or before February 27th, 2020 at 4:30 pm.

Proposals may be submitted by mail or in person & shall be marked "Sealed Bid Sycamore Street Property." Proposals shall contain the offered price & proposed acquisition terms. The Village requires proposals to either provide for the repair of both structures located on the Real Estate so the house structure can be occupied as a single family residence with a garage or a proposal to demolish the structures on the Real Estate.

Proposals should, at minimum, (a) describe the planned use; (b) set forth a timetable for repair or demolition (as applicable); (c) provide for the purchaser to pay all title commitment expenses and all taxes on the Real Estate (including 2019 and 2020 real estate taxes); and (d) payment of the Village's legal expenses related to the Real Estate sale. The Village will enter into an installment contract providing for final transfer of title when the required repair work or demolition work is fully completed.
