GRANVILLE — Steven Perez of Granville is using his artistic talents to inspire his daughters to get creative and delighting his neighbors in the process.

Perez, whose normal endeavors lean more towards drawing and painting, sculpted a life-sized Winnie the Pooh and Tigger out of snow in his Hennepin Street yard.

He said he first tried his hand at snow art a year ago for his now 13-year-old Mia and 7-year-old Anaiz, but mild winter weather kept him from getting in more time in the snow.

“Me and my daughters first made a bear and a honey pot, but the weather didn’t hold out to try it again until now,” he said.

“I’ve been trying new projects and been showing my girls, who are also gifted in art, to think outside the box with their imagination,” he added.

“I already have a couple more ideas in mind,” Perez said, “I’m watching the weather.”

“It took me two days to create the popular Disney characters,” said Perez.

Perez has created some snow sculptures in the past but this was his most elaborate one.

On Jan. 29, students and staff at Putnam County Primary School enjoyed a different kind of school day.

This day in particular was extra special because it was the 100th day of school. In an effort to demonstrate just how much 100 was, the teachers planned different activities that revolved all around the number 100.

Students were busy participating in the following activities throughout the day: • Students dressed like they were a 100 years old.

• Each child created a “mystery bag” with 100 secret items and three clues attached to the bag for their friends to guess what was inside.

• Students made a 100th Day hat and I’m a 100 Days Smarter hats.

• Created a book of 100, and read special books about the 100th day of school.

• Made 100 piece puzzles.

• Completed a “When I am 100 years old” craft.

• Created a 100s Chart Hershey Kiss activity, and a 100 cup stack challenge.

• There were many 100 second challenges, such as a hidden picture activity.

• A 100 chart with math problems and I can write 100 words.

• There were 100 second healthy body activities, and balance balloons in the air for 100 seconds along with a 100 cotton ball “snow ball” challenge.

the local Putnam County Food Pantry. Each class, preschool through second grade, did their best and in total the students collected 2,051 items for the food pantry. This was the largest amount collected at the school to date. It was quite the exciting day for students at PCPS and for the Putnam County Food Pantry.

The school stresses each day the importance of being kind and helping others and PCPS is proud of the students and their families for their generosity and kindness toward others.

Citizenship As a schoolwide citizenship activity, the students had 2 weeks to collect 100 cans (or boxes) of food for

BRIEFS Red Cross blood drive planned for Feb. 15 in McNabb MCNABB — Putnam County Methodist Churches will host the next Red Cross community blood drive in McNabb from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15. The drive will be held at Goldasich Hall in the McNabb Fire Department on Illinois Route 89, south of McNabb.

The blood drive offers a chance for repeat and first-time donors to save lives with their donation of blood. All blood types save lives. Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. COVID-19 has caused closure of many blood drives, heightening the immediate need for donors as blood shortages continue throughout the United States.

For appointments, call 800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767) or Lisa Johnson at 815-488-8143. Donors may also sign up and pre-register on line using RapidPass at redcrossblood.org or can download and the Red Cross Blood Donor App. Walk-ins are only permitted if a time slot is open, due to the need for social distancing, so appointments are recommended and greatly preferred.

Stage 212 will present online performance on Feb. 14 LASALLE — Stage 212 will celebrates Valentine’s Day with a free online performance that spotlights the original sweethearts.

“The Virtual Diaries of Adam and

Eve” is a unique love story adapted by Kevin P. Kern and Dan W. Davis from Mark Twain’s stories “Eve’s Diary” and “Extracts from Adam’s Diary.” The production stars Zomnyet Webster as Eve, Brady Hughes as Adam and Joe Ennenbach as God, was directed by Scot Smigel, and was filmed and edited by Reid Tomasson.

“The Virtual Diaries of Adam and Eve” will be presented on YouTube from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, and can be viewed by clicking on the link that will be posted on the Stage 212 website at www.stage212.org. The performance run time is approximately 40 minutes.

Carl (101 years) and Helen (100 years) Carlson of Peru will celebrate their 80th wedding anniversary.

Carl “Kelly’ J. Carlson and the former Helen Marie Peterson were united in marriage Feb. 20, 1941, in Varna at the home of the bride’s parents. Pastor Carl Olson officiated the service. Their attendants were Virginia (Peterson) Holz and Richard Johnson, both now deceased.

The couple are the parents of four children, Don (Patty) Carlson of The Villages, Fla., John (deceased) and wife, Kalynn Carlson of Aurora, Phil (Sherrie) Carlson of Granville and Chris (Vaun) Meinhold of Lostant. They have 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Carl retired as a commissioned agent for Amoco after 35 years. They are members of Emmaus Lutheran Church, McNabb.

Town and Country creates HVAC scholarship

TONICA — Town & Country Services of Tonica has created a scholarship for Illinois Valley Community College students studying heating, ventilation and air-conditioning.

Starting this fall, the $1,000 annual scholarship funded by Bob and Vicki Goskusky will support full- or part-time students enrolled in the one-year HVAC certificate program. The scholarship covers tuition, books and fees.

“It is wonderful to see a successful local business like Town & Country support students pursuing work in this critically important trade,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran.

“Bob and Vicki’s investment in our students will strengthen the workforce by enticing more students to pursue HVAC careers,” he added. “Enrollments in HVAC have been steady. We are very optimistic about the program’s future.”

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS EXTENSION University of Illinois Extension invites youth, ages 8-12 years old, to learn about the 4-H program and to try out some fun projects at home.

University of Illinois Extension invites families and youth to sign up and participate in the upcoming Find Your Spark! sessions. In 4-H, youth learn by doing and you have a great time while doing it! These Find Your Spark! sessions will provide youth with a variety of experiences on a variety of fun topics.

Find Your Spark! is a six-week session beginning Feb. 23 on Tuesdays from 4 to 5 p.m. via Zoom. The cost for participating is $5 per youth which includes all six sessions. These sessions are aimed at youth ages 8-12,

focusing on health, cultural awareness, creative arts, child development, animal science and horticulture: • Health: This lesson will introduce youth to the importance of physical fitness as part of a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, they will learn about three types of exercise with the main focus being on flexibility and balance. To conclude, the group will go through a yoga flow and practice poses that have been matched to the 4-H Pledge.

• Cultural awareness: Explore a different culture through traditional meals and food etiquette. We’ll learn how to use Japanese chopsticks and practice our new skills together!

• Creative arts: It is time to get cre-

ative! In this session, participants will explore different visual arts and mediums to help them create their very own creature out of modeling clay.

• Child development: This lesson will introduce youth to the four areas of growth and development: physical, mental, social, and emotional. Participants will observe how children express emotions, learn how children are similar and different, and analyze appropriate activities for infants and toddlers, ages birth-5 years.

• Animal science: Think like a veterinarian! In this session, participants will learn about how parasites affect sheep and goats and use diagnostic tools to determine if an animal needs treatment.

• Horticulture: Discover your green thumb by learning how to grow culinary herbs. We’ll explore some recipes to try using your homegrown herbs and we’ll take a look at the new herb project exhibit opportunity.

Each week an experienced 4-H educator will teach youth about a different topic and provide a hands-on activity to complete. All supplies will be mailed to participants. The prankster wrote a letter dated Feb. 1 explaining that a group of friends “thought it would be funny” to take all the maps placed for visitors to use.

“When we got home, we realized how dumb that was,” the sender wrote. “So I am sending them back to you. We hope you can forgive our foolish teenage stunt.”

The staff at Starved Rock State Park posted a picture of the letter and the box of maps, mailed at a cost of $13.03, and expressed their appreciation for the change of heart.

“Paper maps are costly and we go through almost 500,000 a year, so when they go missing it isn’t some-

thing that goes unnoticed and we can’t just order more right away,” staff wrote on the state park’s Facebook page. “We are also going paperless here at the park by 2023 because so many maps are used then tossed in a bin or on the ground.”

Not only was the disappearance noted, but park staff remembered when it happened.

“This November I had just stocked both doors with brochures and went out to feed the birds,” Facebook the post read. “I came back through about 20 minutes later and the maps were completely gone at both doors.”

That was peculiar because maps will disappear that quickly during the peak month of July, but not in November.

“The assistant superintendent and myself were curious so we pulled up the video from the cameras and saw a young male individual in a hoodie taking all of the brochures from both doors and running,” according to the post. “We had a good laugh but it did put a dent into the maps we had to distribute that day.”

Kevin was an expert craftsman; he owned and operated Campbell Classic Carpentry until his retirement. He worked previously at Goodrich in Henry

He was preceded in death by his father, Glen, in 2002; brother, Douglas, in 1987; and niece, Elizabeth Wilcoxson, in 1988.

Kevin died while doctors and nurses cared for him in the COVID ICU. His family was not allowed to be at his side.

KEVIN CHLUM kchlum@shawmedia.com With a few key players returning, a couple players set for expanded roles, talented players coming up from JV and a freshman ready to play varsity, Putnam County girls basketball coach Jared Sale feels his team has more depth than last year.

“In terms of athleticism, there isn’t a dropoff as we get down our bench, which is a huge positive for us,” Sale said. “We should also be able to improve our outside shooting numbers a lot. We should have the capability of having a lineup with three shooters on the floor at a time, so we’re excited about the possibilities of that.”

Senior Sophia Harris leads a strong core of experienced players.

Last season, she averaged 10.6 points and 5.7 rebounds a game and was named First-Team All-Tri-County Conference and Second-Team News­ Tribune All Area.

Harris has signed to play with Illinois Valley Community College and Sale said she would have had a shot at 1,000 career points with a full season.

Classmate Caitlyn Cioni is back at point guard after contributing 6.3 points, 2.4 assists and 2.3 steals a game last winter.

Senior Chloe Linton was the team’s first post player off the bench last year, but Sale anticipates a larger role for her this season.

“Last year she missed a few games due to injury,” Sale said. “We look for her production to really pick up.

We’re looking at 25-plus minutes a night from her. She had two double-doubles last year when we needed her to provide more minutes.”

Sale said junior Erin Brooker “should be an immediate offensive boost for us and should help stretch the floor and open some things for us offensively,” while “super athletic” junior Zofia Uzella is expected to fill a forward position.

Freshman Ava Hatton also is expected to play key minutes.

“She should provide one of the larger roles that our program has seen from a freshman since Paige Veronda,” Sale said. “We’re hoping to get her feet wet and have her ready to be a full-time starter as early as next year.”

The Lady Panthers finished 16-16 overall last year and 5-2 in the Tri-County Conference.

“Obviously, we still want to be competitive and win basketball games,” Sale said about the COVID19 shortened season. “That isn’t going to change for us, but we can

The Putnam County boys basketball team returns a handful of experienced players for the COVID-19 shortened 2021 season.

Seniors Luke Pederson and Matt Liebhart are back after averaging 9.2 points and 7.8 points per game, respectively, last season when the Panthers went 12-20 overall and 6-3 in the Tri-County Conference.

Steve Mecagni is one of three returning inside players for PC along with Nick Mattern and Adam Curry. Last winter, Mecagni averaged 5.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

“Our goal is to compete every night at a high level,” Putnam County coach Harold Fay said. “We are stressing bringing a lot of energy to the floor.

“We would like to use a variety of press-

es to help keep our energy level high.

Offensively, we hope to push up the floor for quick baskets. If not, we will have the capability to run patient set plays.”

Sophomore Jackson McDonald came on strong for the Panthers toward the end of last season and is expected to play a key role.

“Jackson will be asked to play both post and perimeter and hopefully bring on some matchup problems,” Fay said.

Junior Chad Olson will see time at forward, while Drake Smith will get minutes at guard. Andrew Pyszka and Austin Mattingly also will have opportunities on the floor.

Fay said he expects Roanoke-Benson and Marquette to be contenders in the Tri-County Conference.

Last season, R-B went 36-1, won the TCC regular season and tournament titles and qualified for the Class 1A state tournament.

STREATOR — As many high school boys basketball coaches around the state probably would say, the opening few games of this shortened season, with not much practice time, might be a little ragged.

Such was the case in the first quarter of Friday’s season opener for Putnam County and Woodland at the Warrior Dome, as each team struggled to get its feet underneath it. However, the visiting Panthers seemed to find their balance after the opening eight minutes, while the Warriors never did find their rhythm as the hosts lost, 61-30.

“It was sure nice to get back to seeing the kids playing basketball,” said PC coach Harold Fay, whose team sank 52% of its field-goal tries. “I wish there could have been more people here tonight, but we’ve got to have something for these kids ... they’ve suffered enough. They needed this.

“We knew coming here tonight that Woodland always plays hard, and it’s a tough place to shoot in. We were able to get the ball inside and take advantage of our height a little, and also our defense and then transition game and force the tempo. I was a little disappointed in the second half when Woodland went zone and we had a 12-point lead, we sputtered a little bit against it, so that’s something we’ll have to sharpen up.

“I thought we had good energy, and our help defense was pretty decent, so overall it was a pretty good start.”

Putnam County led, 11-5, after the first quarter, then extended its advantage to 29-15 at the half and 41-25 heading to the fourth. Jackson McDonald showed little signs of the extended layoff as he fired in 18 of his game-high 26 points in the opening half, finished 12 of 15 from the floor while also grabbing seven rebounds.

The Panthers also received 10 points, including a pair of triples, off the bench from Austin Mattingly, seven points and three steals from Luke Pederson, and six points, four rebounds and four assists from Matt Liebhart. “[McDonald] is always active and just has a nose for the ball,” Fay said. “He’s just one of those kids that just loves the game.”

Woodland was paced by 17 points from Sean Bundy and 10 rebounds and four steals from Chris Stasko, but the Warriors committed 18 of their 29 turnovers in the first half and shot a chilly 29% from the floor, including 5 of 24 from beyond the arc in the game.

“We are back, and that’s the main thing,” Woodland coach Connor Kaminke said. “I think as coaches, we know early on things may be a little ugly and sloppy, and I knew we might struggle tonight. Putnam County played extremely hard, there are long, tall and tough as heck. That’s a team that is going to win a lot of games in this conference.”

PC held a 10-point lead two minutes into the second quarter and closed out the half on a 9-3 spurt, then outscored the home team, 32-15, in the second half.

“We competed for a while with it being a 10- to 12-point game, but there came a point where we got tired, and they really took advantage from there,” Kaminke said. “We were just completely gassed in the fourth quarter, but they really sped us up and pressured from the start, and we just weren’t able to get into any kind of offensive rhythm tonight.”

Princeton girls win opener against Putnam County KEVIN HIERONYMUS khieronymus@bcrnews.com GRANVILLE — Tiffany Gonigam didn’t have to motivate her Princeton girls basketball team very much Saturday night. They’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time.

The Tigresses opened the COVID19 delayed season with a 32-26 win over host Putnam County at RM Germano Gymnasium. The last time they played a game was 12 months ago, and it looked like they would not get the chance to play this year because of the pandemic.

“We played basketball tonight and that’s pretty exciting,” Gonigam said.

“I almost wondered if the snow was trying to take that away from us. So all around, a huge celebration that we even got to play tonight.

“I’m really proud of the kids. When I started talking before the game about playing hard, they all lit up.

I think they realize it’s been almost a year since they’ve been on the court playing basketball and nearly almost anything. When I started

talking about giving effort, there was no doubt that’s what we were going to see.”

PC coach Jared Sale, who saw their opener canceled by weather Thursday, was equally pleased to get back in action.

“It’s good for the kids, good for the coaches, to get back to some kind of normal. We’ve been waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting,” he said. “I’m just happy for the kids to be able to compete, especially the seniors.

They’ve worked hard for however many years. To just get back on the floor was pretty huge. It’s like a token line that everybody’s going to say, but it is.”

The Tigresses led as much as 11 points midway through the fourth quarter. Senior Taylor Quiram gave Princeton its big push, scoring eight of Princeton’s 11 points in the third quarter. She added the opening bucket of the fourth quarter on a swisher from the deep left baseline to put the Tigresses ahead 26-17.

“That was one of the things I celebrated about her [Quiram] after the

game, I felt she really came alive second half and took leadership when we needed her to,” Gonigam said.

Two free throws by Mariah Hobson and a hoop by Morgan Coleman stretched Princeton’s lead to 30-19.

The Lady Panthers didn’t go away without a fight.

Sophia Harris, a recent Illinois Valley Community College signee, converted a three-point play with a drive and free throw to make it 30-22 with 3:21 to play. Harris added two free throws at the 1:49 mark ,and senior Chloe Linton added two free throws with 30.3 left to close the Panthers within 30-26. But that would be as close as they would get.

Gonigam said there was a little but felt all the pieces fell together pretty well.

“We return a lot of people, but we bring up some juniors, and just try to feel where everybody fits. So there was some rust,” Gonigam said. “But I am happy, No. 1 the way we started the game knocking down shots and making some defensive stops. Things are always tough down the stretch,

but I thought we did pretty well.”

Quiram, who was playing under the watchful eye of IVCC coach Josh Nauman, scored a game-high 13 points. Linton led Putnam County with 11 points.

Sale said the Tigresses’ 1-3-1 zone, with the lanky Quiram on top, disrupted a lot of things Putnam County was trying to do.

The Tigresses came out hot on a cold February night with seniors Quiram and Brynn Hieronymus hitting backto-back 3-pointers for a quick 6-0 lead.

Senior newcomer Savannah Birkey added another 3-pointer to put the Tigresses on top 9-2 at quarter’s end.

Baskets by Gracie Cuicci and Linton and a layup by freshman Ava Hatton drew the Lady Panthers within 9-8 with 5:15 to play in the second quarter.

McKenzie Hecht took a pass from Quiram for a layup and Birkey added a hoop to put the Tigresses ahead 13-8.

Linton sank a free throw and basket before the buzzer to close a low-scoring half with Princeton leading 13-11.
