“Diamond’s death was attributed to multiple stab wounds. This information was provided by the forensic pathologist and the Putnam County death investigator.

“The investigation has led to numerous individuals interviewed and tips being reported. Every tip that is reported will continue to be tracked down.”

Bradley’s funeral was held on Feb.

3 at Ptak Funeral Home in Peru.

After the funeral, a memorial dinner was hosted by Hall High School.

“Staff and community members are drawing together to provide much assistance to Diamond’s family, and it’s very heartwarming to witness the outpouring of support for them,” Hall Superintendent Jay McCracken said.

To build a better world Kindness Club promotes respect and compassion

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com McNABB — Anti-bullying programs are commonplace in many schools, but students at Putnam County Junior High School realized a need to move beyond bullying by creating a club with a foundation of respect, inclusivity and compassion.

At one point, Putnam County Junior High School had an anti-bullying club that was successful, but after a year, students wanted to move on to something more challenging and positive.

One of the club’s activities had been participation in a 21-day kindness challenge. The impact of that inspired the creation of the Kindness Club, which is now in its second year. “We now focus on making the school a more kind and understanding place by learning about and respecting all types of people,� Kris Sienza, math teacher and club sponsor, said.

The after-school club doesn’t exclude any students from membership, and meeting attendance is voluntary. They average about 25 students per weekly meeting, but have had up to 47 in attendance.

The group has worked with Illinois Valley Animal Rescue to assist with animal adoptions, continued their kindness challenges, created videos and posters in support of their mission, worked on multiple school projects, created a project where students could show appreciation for their teachers and the daily inspiration they provide, raised funds for St. Jude, hosted guest speakers; and plans to continue its members work in local communities. “The club has had a huge impact on making

Principal Mike Olson said.

While social media and American politics are often striving to create divisiveness, the Kindness Club is moving in the opposite direction. “I think students really like talking about social situations and kindness, maybe contrary to popular belief. They enjoy getting to know

others’ perspectives and situations, and I’ve seen several students take the lessons they’ve learned and apply them to their everyday lives in school,�

Sienza said.

He added the frequency of social discussions has grown and said student comments are both thoughtful and insightful. Sienza has witnessed students voluntarily holding doors for others and helping them when needed; welcoming new students; respecting others’ views even when they disagree; and noticed a difference in many members of the club. “If we can treat each other with kindness and respect, even when we disagree, and truly listen and try to understand despite differences, then the world would be a better place. Not everyone has to agree, but hopefully we can each try to understand where everyone is coming from. I think the world needs a lot more of that, and hopefully we can do our part in Putnam County to improve it,� he said.

Erin Brooker, the eighth-grade representative for the club, said it’s a great group to belong to because of its positivity and how it helps give her an awareness during those moments when she can show her kindness. “It’s a great place to spread your ideas and feelings without fear of judgment. This club definitely has a positive effect on the school and helps remind students that even little acts of kindness make a big difference,� Brooker said.

The club also received assistance from the high school’s students through the construction of a “kindness bench.� “The bench is there for students to sit on if they’re ever feeling down, so others can sit by them and show them true friendship. It’s a great symbol of the kindness and compassion here at PCJH,� Brooker said.

Human trafficking seminar focuses on identifying and fighting an often hidden crime

PRINCETON — Human trafficking is a crime that is often hidden just beneath the surface, and it can be found in any community, large or small.

Hosted by Freedom House, a center for the prevention of abuse, a seminar recently presented

by Sara Dillefeld taught representatives from Illinois Valley law enforcement, education, social services, medical professionals and other advocates and concerned community members about the growing threat of human trafficking.

Dillefeld is the director of Human Trafficking Services at the Center for Prevention of Abuse in Peoria.

“When we created this department, we didn’t know what we were getting into, and we’ve realized there’s a real need for this,” Dillefeld said.

“Trafficking is often a hidden crime that’s just under the surface of our communities, and at some point, you have or will experience a connection to trafficking, whether it’s through your food, clothes, products, services or the people you come into contact with,” she said.

Agents arrest Streator man on heroin, cocaine charges

STREATOR — A Streator man was taken into custody Tuesday, Jan. 30,

by Streator Police Department after police say he delivered heroin to TriDENT agents.

According to a police report, Michael L. Pitts, 22, was stopped for driving while license suspended after delivering approximately 1.5 grams of heroin to undercover cops. Agents searched Pitts’ vehicle and recovered cannabis and a loaded handgun. After the arrest, agents searched Pitts’ residence and recovered approximately 2.7 grams of heroin and 13.8 grams of crack cocaine.

Pitts was transported to LaSalle County Jail. Following the investigation, Pitts was charged with one count of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (heroin), a Class 1 felony — more than one gram, but less than 15 grams; one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (heroin), a Class 1 felony — more than one gram, but less than 15 grams; and one count of unlawful possession of a controlled substance (crack cocaine), a Class 1 felony — more than one gram but less than 15 grams.

Pitts is being held at LaSalle County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Streator woman arrested, facing felony heroin charge STREATOR — On Tuesday, Jan. 30, a Streator woman was picked up on a LaSalle County warrant after police say she sold heroin to undercover TriDENT agents.

HENNEPIN — Abraham Lincoln will have a special place in Putnam County’s celebration of the state’s bicentennial, thanks to the donation of a canvas print of Lincoln’s portrait that will be presented to the county in ceremonies to be held this Friday.

The Lincoln portrait will be presented by the Illinois State Historical Society, Illinois Judges Association and local contributor Roger C. Bolin, Hennepin attorney and president of the Putnam County Bar Association, at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 9, in the courtroom of the Putnam County Courthouse in Hennepin.

The public is invited. Refreshments will be served in the county board room.

The original portrait was made by famed photographer Alexander Hesler in Springfield on June 3, 1860, following Lincoln’s nomination as the Republican candidate for the presidency. Presentation of the portrait will be made by Roger Bolin, retired Circuit Judge Scott Shore, and ISHS Vice President Stuart Fliege.

Abraham Lincoln is very much a part of the state’s history as the Land of Lincoln. Born 209 years ago next Monday, Lincoln’s travels included visits to Putnam County. One such visit in September 1845 is well noted, while campaigning for Congress.

Lincoln served four terms as a state representative, one term as a U.S. Congressman and was elected the country’s 16th president in 1860.

Cassandra Petty, 26, of McNabb was westbound on Route 71 when she fell asleep. Her vehicle entered the ditch on the north side of the road and overturned. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued.

“A woman just came through our drive-thru and handed me $11, the last bills in her wallet, and she told me it was all she had, but that she wanted to help,” Judd said, adding the gesture resulted in him going outside and giving her a hug of thanks.

He also said he was contacted by Mark Marquis of Marquis Energy, and was told he would double whatever amount Grandma Rosie’s raised towards the reward. At the time of the interview, the reward would be approaching $10,000.

Judd said if no worthy tip is given, he’d like to be able to donate it to help the Bradley family. Additionally, an account has been opened at Spring Valley City Bank in Doris Bradley’s name, in care of Diamond Bradley.

Bradley had been a student at Hall School, but dropped out in October.

“She was really energetic and had

a hard time sitting still. That would get her in trouble sometimes,” Diquan Bradley, Diamond’s older brother, said of his sister who loved to sing.

However, Diamond knew she needed an education, and Diquan said she’d recently enrolled in IVCC’s GED program with hopes of continuing toward a career in nursing.

“She’d been having a bit of a hard time, but she was pulling it together,” Diquan added.

He also said he thinks the person who killed her was someone she knew.

“There’s no way she’d have left with a stranger, and if it was, she was taken by force,” he said.

At a press conference held in Spring Valley on Jan. 29, Spring Valley Police Chief Kevin Sangston said officials currently believe this

was an isolated incident, but the investigation continues.

Judd also said an investigator recently spent several hours at Grandma Rosie’s reviewing security camera footage in hopes of spotting Diamond during the time she was missing and added the same thing was occurring at businesses throughout the area.

“They’re going to find whoever did this, and this community wants to show those who would come here and do something like this that we won’t allow it, not here,” he said.

The death is being investigated by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Spring Valley Police Department, the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office, the LaSalle Police Department, Tri-DENT, the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, the Putnam County State’s Attorney, the Bureau County State’s Attorney, the Putnam County Death Investigator and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services.

Anyone with any information should contact their local law enforcement agency.

This investigation has led to numerous tips and individuals being interviewed. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office reported every tip received will be investigated.

Bradley was last seen at 10 p.m. on Jan. 23 at her residence. She was reported missing the following morning, the day of her mother’s birthday. On Jan. 27, her body was found alongside County Highway 850 North in Granville Township, and on Feb. 2 authorities announced that her death was caused by multiple stab wounds.

Texas is ‘open for business,’ so why not Illinois?

S

ky cranes ought to be the state bird of Texas, based on my second extended visit to the Lone Star state in the past three years. I am in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metro area, which at 7.4 million residents rivals metro-Chicago.

Texas has grown 13 percent since 2010, top among the 50 states; Illinois registered a minus 0.22 percent in the same period, 48th in the nation.

The two states have different collective personalities. Texans tend to be individualists on steroids.

Illinois overall is sure not communitarian, yet it has always provided a better safety net for its citizens than does Texas.

As a result, the Texas per capita state and local tax burden of 7.6

percent in 2011 (latest year available from the Tax Foundation) ranks 46th from the highest. In Illinois, our burden was 11 percent, 5th highest.

The Texas corporate tax rate is actually higher than that of Illinois.

But most small and mid-size business owners don’t pay a corporate tax; instead, they are organized to pass their taxes through to the individual – and there is no individual income tax in Texas. Any lawmaker even hinting at an income tax would surely be strung up by his

thumbs the next day.

Texas is also thought to have lax environmental regulations, passing on any external costs in the future to all Texans, rather than to businesses themselves.

Esprit de corps, or state pride, is another element central to the Texas Way. Texans sing “The Eyes of Texas Are upon You” with gusto; Illinois has no such statewide rallying cry.

As a result, Texas has, at least as perceived by CEOs, the best climate for business among the states; Illinois, one of the worst.

So, what can Illinois learn from much different Texas?

I think the most important Texas-like message Illinois must send to all is: “We’re open for business!”

And we can say it, and mean it,

in some ways even more telling than that of Texas.

Yet our message has to be different, because our circumstances are different.

Illinois is not RTW. (I am working on a column about the future of the labor movement, but need to do much more research.)

For many businesses, RTW says, “We’re open for business.” If a state isn’t RTW, it waves a red flag proclaiming the opposite, correct or not.

Illinois needs to simplify its state and local regulations as well. I am told we make it more difficult to start a business here than in other states.

We should have one-stop shopping for state and local regulations.

ISO collects information about municipal fire suppression efforts in communities throughout the United States. Insurance companies often use a community’s ISO fire department score when they set premiums for homeowners and commercial policies. In return, this may result in lower premiums.

A city’s ISO fire rating is based on fire department operations (50 percent), the city’s water supply system (40 percent) and emergency dispatch communications (10 percent). This reflects the service and dedication of our fire department, public works department, which maintains and continues upgrades to our water system, and the emergency dispatch center working together to improve our score.

Cooperation with Spring Valley Fire Department is also important.

Having enacted an automatic aid agreement, additional equipment and manpower from surrounding towns and villages are always available when assistance is needed.

We feel this is a very good accomplishment for a volunteer fire department and will work hard to maintain this rating. The support from our community is greatly appreciated. We couldn’t do this without your help. As the saying goes, “Helping us help you.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Higher Ed board: State universities are affordable To the editor: The New Year is a time for resolutions, and there is no shortage of political, educational, business and opinion leaders who resolve to catalyze the significant reforms needed to stem the flow of Illinois students to out-of-state colleges and universities. Proposed changes include the consolidation of programs and administrative governance, strengthened institutional commitments to affordability and accessibility, and predictable investment from state government.

The Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) agrees with the urgency for bold initiatives and is poised to play a central role in that change. In 2002, only 29 percent of the four-year-college-going Illinois high school graduates enrolled outside the state, but by 2016, 46 percent of the high school graduates enrolled in out-of-state colleges. In the 14 years that passed, our research finds that the rate of out-of-state enrollment increased by more than 57 percent.

IBHE resolves this New Year to serve as a venue for change, where key state higher education leaders, lawmakers and others who desire to restore the prominence of our state’s most precious resource come together. As the statewide coordinating agency for higher education, IBHE can provide reliable data, trustworthy

analysis, and direction to facilitate discussions and form alliances to develop strategic goals for high-performing and sustainable institutions.

IBHE has released an analysis showing it is significantly less expensive for an Illinois resident to enroll in-state at one of Illinois’ public universities than at neighboring state colleges and universities. This dispels the myth that it costs more to attend an Illinois public university than it does at a comparable public university in Indiana, Iowa, Missouri or Wisconsin.

Also, Illinois citizens attending Illinois community colleges, public universities, and the majority of private colleges and universities are eligible to be considered for the state’s Monetary Award Program (MAP). MAP is recognized as one of the finest need-based grant programs in the country, and the academic success rate for MAP grant scholars is excellent.

trafficking cases reported in Illinois in 2016 with 1,802 potential people trafficked. The majority of victims were female and a roughly a third were minors.

This modern-day slavery can be found in a wide variety of business environments including agriculture, factory work, meat-packing, salons, strip clubs, restaurants, construction, domestic services, elderly care, the internet, massage parlors, motels/hotels, truck stops and more.

“Traffickers often break several laws during their victim’s exploitation including assault, battery, kidnapping, murder, false imprisonment, sexual assault, prostitution, pandering and many more,” Dillefeld said.

She said victims may need help with housing, food, health concerns, language interpretation, legal services and financial assistance.

She then discussed several new tools law enforcement can use to fight trafficking and encouraged a cooperation with all service providers to help prosecute these criminals and remove their threat from communities while also ensuring the safety of their victims.

The fact is the state’s oppressive unfunded public employee pension liabilities represent an anvil on our backs, which no one has figured out how to unload.

On the positive side, however, Illinois has pluses for business that Texas can only dream of. We are better educated, which is critical. One-third of Illinois adults have college degrees; only 27 percent for Texas, and 12.4 percent of us have advanced degrees, versus 9.4 percent for Texas.

Then there is water.

We have copious amounts and, well, you know the predicament of arid and drought-prone Texas.

Plus impressive infrastructure, arguably the best in the nation, and located in the heart of America. For example, Illinois has much richer networks of interstates and railroads than Texas.

“Runaways are in particular danger, and children are often approached by traffickers within the first 48 hours. And there’s no such thing as a child prostitute, just a child victim,” Dillefeld said.

She added that agriculture is the second most popular venue for labor exploitation, and many immigrants arriving in the country hoping for a better life and an ability to help their families back home are easily exploited.

“This is an under-reported and under-identified problem. According to the United States State Department, there are 20,000 victims being brought into the U.S. each year,” Dillefeld said.

Victims arrive legally, then traffickers seize their victims’ passports and other papers. They’re also paid less than promised, physically and verbally threatened, placed into debt bondage, coerced, beaten, isolated, forced to work exhausting hours, and forced to live in substandard conditions.

“Trafficking is a $150 billion industry. It’s the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world, and it pays big money to traffic people. Human bodies sell, and the demand is there.

Until we take care of the supply and demand problem, it will continue to be out there,” Dillefeld said.

After attendees learned the different aspects of trafficking, Dillefeld discussed how to recognize trafficking; the creation of new laws to protect victims; and how to approach victims with a focus on their needs.

Dillefeld said victims have been subjected to severe trauma and stressed the importance of helping to assure them there’s assistance available.

“It’s a difficult crime to investigate, so it’s helpful to have a victim who’s willing to help. The number one priority is ensuring their physical and emotional safety and building trust. Victims can suffer from PTSD, self-harm and substance abuse. You have to build a rapport with them and ease their anxiety about law enforcement,” she said.

While many trafficking crimes involve immigrants, it’s also found among hometown residents.

“You can be born in your community, grow up and live there and still be trafficked; it happens every day.

I’ve seen residential brothels in our communities,” Dillefeld said.

She also used the upcoming Super Bowl as an example of how prevalent sex trafficking is in this country. She said communities hosting the championship game have had to develop law enforcement strategies to fight the traffickers who bring thousands of women into their cities so they can be sold for sex.

A labor auction is when you bid on an FFA member to come work for eight hours at anytime between now and July. If you want them to be using a ladder, that needs to be discussed between the student and their parent. Each student will have a list of items they will be comfortable doing, so bidding can be done according to that. The labor auction will start at 8:30 a.m. and everyone is welcome to attend.

PCEF announces annual bowling Local scholarships available for Henry-Senachwine students tournament will be held in March HENRY — Several college scholarships of local nature are available for high school senior students in the Henry-Senachwine School District.

The Henry Chamber Scholarship Committee is announcing applications for these scholarships are available now from the office of the guidance counselor at Henry-Senachwine High School. The applications must be obtained from the guidance office by the senior student or his/her parent; they are to be completed and returned to that office by March 1.

These scholarships include the Dewey Family Scholarship, the Finfgeld Family Scholarship and the Henry Chamber of Commerce Scholarships. Both the Dewey and Finfgeld Scholarships are endowed by the respective families from the Henry community. The Henry Chamber of Commerce Scholarships are sponsored by the local/current Chamber of Commerce of Henry.

The Dewey Scholarship is for a Henry-Senachwine senior student who plans to attend a four-year college or university. It is a $1,000

scholarship per year for four years.

The Finfgeld Scholarship is for an HSHS student attending a two-year community college in the area — Illinois Central College, Illinois Valley Community College or Blackhawk College. It is an award of $1,500 each year for two years as the student remains in good standing. The Henry Chamber of Commerce Scholarships are awarded to the valedictorian and the salutatorian of the graduating class of HSHS. The Chamber scholarships are a $1,000 award for each for one year.

The Henry Scholarship Program has been operating consistently for many years for the benefit of students in the local high school, Henry-Senachwine. The operation of this scholarship program is administered by the Henry Chamber Scholarship Committee currently chaired

by Meaghan Dean, a faculty member of HSHS. Attorney Ryan Anderson serves as the vice chairman. Other members of the current committee include Dr. Jon Hill, Marjorie (Finfgeld) Hunt, Joyce Wood and Kenneth Williamson.

GRANVILLE — The Putnam County Educational Foundation (PCEF) recently announced the 18th annual Betty Bouxsein Bowling Tournament will be Sunday, March 25.

Each team will consist of five bowlers with an entry fee of $180.

The first session will begin at 11 a.m. with the second scheduled for 2 p.m. The event returns to Illinois Valley Super Bowl located at Mahoney Drive in Peru.

This event is a worthy cause in

memory of a wonderful person and great friend and trustee of the PCEF, namely Betty Bouxsein.

Betty’s two sons, Bruce and Daryl Bouxsein, continue to be an integral part of the event and its incredible success.

All proceeds from PCEF fundraisers are dedicated to educational extras for the students of Putnam County schools.

“What are your blue jeans made from?”

When asked this question, first grade students respond with a variety of answers.

“String,” replies one youngster. “Wool”, suggests another. Understandably, the students are not familiar with this southern crop that makes up a big part of their wardrobe.

The January lesson, provided by University of Illinois Extension Marshall-Putnam Ag in the Classroom, shows the students how this versatile fiber is transformed into blue jeans and T-shirts. Students examine bolls of real cotton, separating the firmly held seeds from the fibers. They practice twisting the lint into string and learn how the seeds

Illinois Sheriffs’ Association announces scholarship opportunities Putnam County Sheriff will award one $500 scholarship HENNEPIN — The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association announces it will be awarding $53,500 in college scholarships throughout the state of Illinois to students wishing to pursue higher education during the 201819 academic year. The scholarships are to be applied to tuition, books and fees only.

The student must be enrolled full-time at a certified institution of higher learning within the state of Illinois.

Sheriff Kevin Doyle, Putnam County, will award one scholarship in the amount of $500.

There will be no restriction on any applicant by reason of race, age, creed, color, sex or national origin. The only

limitations are as follows: • Applicants must be permanent Illinois residents.

• Scholarships must be utilized at institutions of higher learning within the state of Illinois.

• Students must be enrolled as a fulltime student during the 2018-19 school year (excluding summer session).

Bureau County Fair is going to give you a chance to see the next best thing to going to a Garth show.

Brian Shartzer and the Ropin’ the Wind Band will perform at the Bureau County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Feb 24. Shartzer is a Garth Brooks tribute musician. He will be performing favorite hits like “The Dance,” “The Thunder Rolls,” “American Honky Tonk Bar Association” and “Friends in Low Places.”

Shartzer is a recording artist at Shock City Studios in St. Louis. Together with the Ropin’ the Wind Band he is considered the

closest thing to an actual Garth Brooks show.

The show will begin at 6 p.m. in the exhibit halls at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W. Peru St. in Princeton. There will even be a dance floor so wear your best cowboy boots to swing the night away.

Tickets are $15. Tickets will also enter you in a drawing to win front row tickets for this summer’s concert during the Bureau County Fair on Thursday, Aug. 23. Derango named to president’s list TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Hope Derango of Peru was named to the University of Alabama’s president’s list for fall 2017 semester.

A total of 12,594 students enrolled during semester at UA were named to the dean’s list with an academic record of 3.5 or above or the president’s list with an academic record of 4.0 (all A’s).

Storm receives bachelor’s degree BELLEVILLE — Bret Storm, the son of Howard and Vicki Storm of Tonica, has graduated from Lindenwood University-Belleville with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis on sports management. He attended Lindenwood University on a baseball scholarship after graduating from L-P High School in 2013.

He made the dean’s list while attending LUB and has accepted an internship with the commissioner’s office of Frontier Professional Baseball, an independent league based out of Sauget, near St. Louis. He is also working for Greater Midwest Baseball, the largest youth baseball tournament provider in the greater Midwest, based out of St. Louis, Mo.

Project Next Generation grant funds humanities and tech workshops for middle schoolers LASALLE — The LaSalle Public Library is taking registration for two new programs that will launch Feb. 26.

The programs, Project Next Generation, will engage participants in using technology to connect with the past, present and future.

In the first half of the eightweek programs, students will work as a team, as they learn features and then use digital cameras, recording equipment and video editing technology to produce high-quality archival interviews for the Illinois Veterans History Project.

Students will also acquire critical skills necessary to successfully interview individuals including an understanding of question development, preparation, pacing, listening and engagement. Their work, 30-minute recorded interviews, will be uploaded to the Illinois Veterans History Project site, and, will also become part of the Library’s local history col-

lection.

Building on both the technical and collaborative skills learned with the Illinois Veterans History Project, students will continue to connect with the past, present and future with one of two four-week projects.

One group of students will work collaboratively in their exploration and use of 360 Degree Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality technology.

The second student group will explore 3D Design and Printing including CAD software that facilitates development of CAD drawings via photogrammetry.

Both student groups will create finished pieces that can be shared via community and/or classroom presentations. The programs will include a “working” field trip to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, a location that will provide opportunities to utilize learned technologies to complete projects.

The grant program is the vision of Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White. Its focus is for public libraries to provide after-school programming that encourages youth to learn emerging technologies, and participate in an important and lasting Illinois humanities project. Taught by adult mentors, these programs also strive to help students develop self-confidence whether working collaboratively or independently.

This program is free and is open to all students, ages 11-14, including home-school students. Participation, however, is limited to a total of 20 students. Up to 10 students will participate in each of the two programs.

“From the Heart: Thought In Color” is the theme of Weberpal’s exhibit, much of which is done in a primitive, folk art style that bursts with color. She studied art at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. While raising her three children, she experimented with many different mediums, including textile, clays, pencils, paint and paper maché. Today, she is a full-time artist, operating as Harvest Moon Designs and specializing in folk art paintings, dolls, clothing and accessories.

STREATOR

Community Players will host meet the directors event Feb. 11 STREATOR — Theatre fans will get a chance to meet the directors for Community Players of Streator’s 2018 season and learn more about how to get involved in the group’s upcoming 61st season.

Community Players of Streator — best known as Engle Lane — will host a Meet the Directors Night at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 11, in the William C. Schiffbauer Center for the Performing Arts at Engle Lane Theatre, 1012 Columbus Road, Streator.

The directors of each production

will be introduced and will provide an overview of their show, including ways for interested individuals to become involved both on and off stage.

Following the presentation of the directors, those attending will have the opportunity to tour the theatre and learn more about getting involved in the season.

“You don’t have to have any experience at all to be involved at Engle Lane,” said Samantha Farb, Engle Lane’s 2018 production chair-

man and board of director member.

“Everyone has to start somewhere, and it is our hope that this event can help make taking that first step a little less intimidating for those just starting out.”

Season tickets are on sale for the 2018 season, starting at $60 for all six shows. Productions will include: “Cry Baby, the Musical,” a musical comedy directed by Nik Frig May 13-19; “The Dixie Swim Club,” a comedy/drama directed by Kathy Missel June 10-16; Mel Brook’s “The Pro-

ducers,” a musical comedy directed

by Kathy Hepner and Sarah Breyne July 8-14; “James and the Giant Peach, Jr.,” a youth musical directed by Cheyenne Sunken Aug. 5-11; “On Golden Pond,” a comedy/drama directed by Bill Jankowski Sept.

9-16; and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” a musical/dark comedy directed by Samantha Farb Oct. 7-13.
