Former Hall High student found dead Homicide investigation underway; body found in ditch identified as missing Spring Valley girl

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com SPRING VALLEY — Grief counselors were made available to Hall High School students this week after they learned of the homicide of their former classmate, Diamond J. Bradley, 16, who had been reported missing at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 24.

“Grief counseling will be available Diamond at Hall High School during this week, and Bradley we will be prepared to offer the support needed during this very difficult time,” Hall High School Superintendent Jay McCracken said.

“If assistance is needed, please call the district office at 815-664-

2100,” McCracken said.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, at 12:57 p.m.

Saturday, a body was found in a ditch along County Highway 850 North in Granville Township. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body was later identified as Bradley, of Spring Valley, who was last seen at her residence at 10 p.m. on Jan. 23 and was reported missing the following day.

An autopsy was conducted on Sunday. Authorities said the death is being investigated as a homicide.

Putnam County Death Investigator Bob Cofoid reported his preliminary investigation indicates Bradley died from multiple injuries.

Andersen’s case in Dewey death moves forward Arguments made for allowing incriminating conversations

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENNEPIN — The attorneys for Clifford Andersen Jr. have argued against allowing his spouse testify in court during a motions hearing on Jan. 25.

Andersen, 67, of Standard, is charged with murdering his sisterin-law, Deborah Dewey and concealing her body. Dewey, 62, of Ladd was reported missing in August 2016, and her body was found on Sept.

12 in a shallow grave in a yard of

a Standard home for which Andersen was caretaker.

The prosecution wants statements made by Andersen to his wife, as well as texts she later made to Clifford Andersen Jr. family members, to be permissible because of the fact they were lies and don’t promote marital harmony or the basis of the immunity.

Andersen’s lawyers, Drew Parker and his son, Robert Parker, of Peoria, said it’s a privileged communication and should be barred since it was between husband and wife.

smelled like horse manure. State police spoke to the man he was supposedly riding with, and he said he hasn’t seen Andersen in more than 25 years.

Assistant Illinois Debra Attorney General Bill Dewey Elward presented the information that the manure in question was purchased

by Anderson on Sept. 2 and it was also found with Dewey’s body.

Other evidence presented showed the last calls made on Dewey’s

phone were to Andersen. Andersen was also seen leaving Dewey’s car at the Morris truck stop on Aug. 23.

Authorities found the car on Aug. 29. Andersen and Dewey’s DNA was also found in a vehicle wheel well.

There were several objections, arguments and case law cited. Circuit Judge Stephen Kouri is taking the issue under advisement. The next court date is scheduled at 1 p.m. on March 15, and the trial is expected to begin on May 8. Andersen remains jailed on a $150,000 cash bond.

ILLINOIS VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

College cost still lower than state average OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will propose a $3 per hour tuition increase beginning this summer, but the college’s combined credit hour and universal fee will remain below the state average, the board’s audit-finance committee learned Jan. 26.

If approved by the board of trust-

ees Feb. 8, the $133 per hour rate — an increase of 2.3 percent — remains significantly lower than the current $140.88 state average.

“Even with the increase, we continue to be well below the state average for community colleges, and approximately one-third the cost of Illinois State and Northern Illinois and one-fourth the cost of the University of Illinois before you start adding in all of the fees,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said.

The increase, expected to generate approximately $174,000, is recommended in anticipation of state funding remaining at 85 percent of 2015 levels — the year before the state budget impasse.

In addition, fee increases to 42 courses and fees for two new courses will be recommended.

In other business, Cheryl Roelfsema, vice president for Business Services and Finance, presented a three-year financial plan projecting flat state funding of $1.885 million,

modest credit hour increases, minimal property tax increases, and tuition increases of $3, $4 and $2 per year through 2021.

Finally, the committee heard a recommendation for a three-year contract extension with auditor Wipfli LLP of Sterling.

Proposed fees are $37,300 for 2018, $38,150 for 2019 and $39,050 for 2020.

“Wipfli has been very thorough, responsive, and provided great service,” Roelfsema said.

2017 M-P Fair Queen awarded at Miss Illinois Fair Queen pageant

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord.com HENRY — Marshall-Putnam County Fair Queen Alexis Benson has done a fine job of representing both herself and the county during her reign, and her performance at the recent Illinois County Fair Queen pageant earned her an additional accolade.

The well-spoken Benson, of Lacon, was awarded the Best Personal Interview Award at the 59th annual pageant, which concluded on Jan. 21. She competed against 69 other county fair queens at the pageant held in Springfield, and she said she’s been enjoying her royal experiences.

Benson, a student at Bradley University, said her year as queen has been both busy and adventurous with lots of traveling involved.

“Every other weekend, I make an hour and a half trip somewhere for my ‘Queenly Duties,’ and although I’m packing the miles onto my car, I couldn’t be having more fun,” she said.

She said her biggest surprise has been the frequency of how often she’s met former county fair queens around her university and at home in Lacon.

“I’ve had so many incredible women come up to me, tap me on the shoulder and introduce themselves as a former queen. It’s such an amazing opportunity to learn from these women,” Benson said.

She said her experiences at the Illinois State Fair Queen pageant were positive, and she’s appreciative of how all the queens were treated.

She also enjoyed getting to know all the other pageant winners.

how much hard work and preparation goes into things behind the scenes,” Benson said.

“I was blessed by the crew members who helped me with dress malfunctions and assisting me on and off stage. I couldn’t have done it without them,” she said with thanks.

Benson said her interview consisted of many questions focusing on county fairs, agriculture and several personal questions.

“I was asked what my favorite part of my fair was and proudly told the judges the Marshall-Putnam County Fair is one of the last fairs in the northern zone that continues doing harness racing. We have a huge turnout every summer and send a lot of racers to the DuQuoin State Fair,” she said.

They also asked what her favorite 4-H project was, and it was an herb gardening project that won her a trip to the state competition, which was also her first trip to the Illinois State Fair.

She was also asked about her experiences with traveling.

“I told them about my trip to Moscow, Russia last January and how I’d taught English to Russian college students. This gave me the opportunity to tell them about Red Square, the Kremlin, The Cathedral of the Savior, and several other places I had seen,” Benson said.

She said her time as queen has taught her much, especially about how proud she is of her hometown and represented counties.

“I’ve loved learning about the histories, the people, and places within Marshall and Putnam counties. Everything I do is a reflection of where I come from, and it’s also taught me to remain humble and kind, to be gracious, and always remember that wherever I am, I always wear my invisible crown,” Benson said.

Samantha Hasselbring, 19, the 2017 Miss Iroquois County Fair Queen, was named the 2018 Miss Illinois Fair Queen. She will reign over the 2018 Illinois State Fair as well as the 104 county fairs.

Eve Postula and Ralph Gensini join bank board The Putnam County Bancorp Board of Directors is announcing the addition of two new directors.

Eve Postula of Peru and Ralph (Joe) Gensini Jr. of Hennepin were elected at the 2018 annual shareholder meeting on Jan. 17 at Hornbaker Gardens in Princeton.

Postula has spent her professional career in accounting and

financial services. She currently holds the position of business office manager and treasurer at St. Bede Abbey and Academy in Peru.

Since joining St. Bede in 2004, she has been instrumental in reinstating the boarding program and reversing a deficit spending cycle at the Academy. She also holds the role of chief financial officer. This includes the direction of the capital campaign and manager of the new construction at the Abbey and Academy.

Postula and her husband, Tim, both grew up in LaSalle and gradu-

ated from St. Bede Academy. She has also attained a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Ind., and an MBA in finance from the Chicago Graduate School of Business at Loyola University.

Trucking laws for farmers focus of seminars in Amboy, Annawan and Hennepin Area Farm Bureaus will host three on-the-road seminars about the motor vehicle regulations for Illinois farmers in mid-February.

The seminars will take place at: • 8 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Lee County Farm Bureau, 37 S. East Ave. in Amboy; • 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at the Putnam County EMA Building, 1050 North in Hennepin; and • 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at the Annawan Community Center, 314 N. State St. in Annawan.

Tom Wise, of the Illinois Department of Transportation, will be at the Hennepin meeting only and will show what is observed during a

The seminar will focus on trucking laws — old and new — specifically for farmers. A new format will be used this year to remind participants of rules that apply and help them identify means of relief. A new segment will use real-life examples to illustrate how regulations affect farmers.

The program will be held Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the University of Illinois Extension – Bureau County Office in Princeton. The public is invited to participate.

“Whether you live on a farm or in an urban setting, wildlife is a part of your everyday life,” Daryle Wragge, Extension ag program coordinator, said.

“Many species have adapted their way of living to be your neighbor, while others around us need our help to conserve their kind due to the pressure of a forever changing environment,” he said.

Tri-DENT makes heroin arrests Two arrests have been made in Streator and Marseilles for unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (heroin).

• The Streator Police Department and the Tri-DENT Drug Task Force arrested Leodis Jordan III, 30, of Streator at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25 for two Class 2 felonies of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance (heroin) following an investiga-

tion into heroin sales in Streator.

During the investigation, Jordan allegedly delivered one gram of heroin to Tri-DENT on several occasions.

• The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Department arrested Shannon M. Bailey, 30, of Marseilles on Jan. 26 for allegedly delivering heroin following an investigation into heroin sales in Marseilles.

STANDARD — Barbara J. Haszler, 92, of Standard passed away at 10:22 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.

She was born Dec. 4, 1925, in Mark to Frank and Caterina (Masinelli) Patarozzi.

She spent most of her life in Putnam County. She retired from Bassicks in Spring Valley. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking, and was an avid bowler.

Surviving are one daughter, Cheryl Morrison of Peru; one son, Jerry (Sue) Haszler of Greensboro, N.C.; one sister, Norma Massa of Michigan; three grandchildren, Dane (Laura) Morrison of Gainesville, Ga., Matt (Corina Westfall) Morrison of Cumming, Ga., and Holly Morrison of Ashville, N.C.; five great-grandchildren, Kai, Kiran, Dillan, Landyn and Ava; and one stepgreat-grandchild, Darren Lee She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Jany in infancy, Ester Balotti, Clara Bianco and Mary Patarozzi; three brothers, Geno, Elso and Max Patarozzi; and three nephews, Rudy Balotti, Richard Massa and Drew Patarozzi.

A memorial service is being planned for a later date.

Memorials may be made to Standard Rescue, the St. Margaret’s Hospital Hospice department, Putnam County Senior Center or the donor’s choice.

At a Monday afternoon press conference held at the Spring Valley Police Department, Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle said investigators have conducted numerous interviews and will be continuing to do so, along with following any leads.

“This investigation is still in its early stages, and we feel releasing too much information at this time would be detrimental to the investigation,” Doyle said.

Doyle also said future releases of information will originate from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

“At this time, we believe this incident is isolated to the victim. It’s been a horrible tragedy that this

family and this community has had to endure,” Spring Valley Police Chief Kevin Sangston said.

Anyone with any information should contact their local law enforcement agency.

The death is being investigated by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the Spring Valley Police Department, the LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office, the LaSalle Police Department, Tri-DENT, the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, the Putnam County State’s Attorney, the Bureau County State’s Attorney, the Putnam County Death Investigator and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services.

Teacher shortages confirmed by survey Regional superintendents group releases results; fewer applicants in Putnam County

BY DAVE COOK news@putnamcountyrecord GRANVILLE — Illinois is losing more residents than anywhere else in the nation as thousands of families leave yearly for more prosperous and better run states. This exodus is resulting in a lack of educated and qualified job applicants and schools in particular are feeling the effects.

The Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools (IARSS) has been warning the state about this issue for years and they’ve recently released the results of a teacher shortage survey of more than 500 school districts.

“If Illinois needs a wake-up call that we must do better to show our youth why teaching is such an important career, our hope is this survey can provide the catalyst for real solutions. We’re committed to working with policymakers in Springfield and our districts around the state to support young teachers and help develop the leaders of our next generation,” Mark Jontry, president of the IARSS, said.

He said the trends are troubling, and the survey shows 78 percent of the districts identified a problem with shortages. 89 percent of central Illinois school districts noted they’ve begun to see significantly fewer qualified applicants for open positions.

Putnam County School District superintendent Additionally, more than half the state’s schools have been struggling with substitute teacher shortages, and only five percent reported no problems.

Most schools reported having to shift teachers to other classrooms to cover absences or having to redistribute their students. Some administrators have also had to begin teaching in place of absent teachers.

Locally, the Putnam County school district is dealing with some of the same issues as well, with Superintendent Carl Carlson saying

that although all positions are currently filled, the district has experienced a dramatic reduction in qualified applicants.

“The biggest shortfalls usually end up in the specialized programs like foreign language, industrial arts, family consumer science, math, science, etc. However, even elementary classroom positions

He also said while a small, rural district such as Putnam County is fortunate and appreciative to have the talented pool of people they have who are willing to substitute, that pool isn’t as deep as it needs to be.

“A lot of times, we find ourselves trying to fill the void by committee or even having a building administrator fill in, which takes that person away from their primary responsibilities as well,” Carlson said.

Although he knows the state is looking for ways to address this shortage, Carlson has also made an effort to keep in contact with former students who’ve chosen a career in education to see how they’re progressing.

“What we’re producing are people who can pass a standardized test, but who don’t have the ‘people skills’ or ‘natural talent’ to connect and lead students. Those potential teaching candidates are choosing other careers or careers in other states,” he added.

He also said this is a difficult situation to correct because so much is out of the control of local school districts. He said he’s tried to encourage the development of future educators from within, and that as a former teacher and coach, he’s honored to be able to look back on being able to recruit his former students and players to join the educational field.

“The biggest reward a person can do is give back to others and make a positive impact in someone else’s life. You can’t put a price tag on that. Unfortunately, with all the mandates and technicalities, the pride and joy in the profession is being lost,” Carlson said.

While PC schools have yet to cancel any classes or programs because of teacher shortages, he added, if the current trends continue, that may change.

National expert says ‘market for industrial development in northern Illinois is great’ CHICAGO — More than 800 commercial and industrial real estate executives attended the 2018 Real Estate Forecast event in downtown Chicago on Jan. 17.

North Central Illinois (NCI) Economic Development Corp., based in Oglesby, was one of the primary sponsors of the event, and promoted the region at the exhibit hall and during the Industrial Development Panel.

“The market for industrial development in northern Illinois is great,” Kenneth Szady, national director for Marcus and Millichap, said.

This sentiment was echoed by more than two dozen real estate executives at meetings and break-out sessions, sponsored by the Illinois Real Estate Journal.

Dan Smolensky, principal of Taurus Modal Group, said: “Opportunities are tremendous.

Vacancy rates are low, demand is high, and industrial development is hot in northeastern Illinois/metro Chicago.”

Executives pointed out concerns about taxes and uncertainty in the state fiscal climate. Yet,

those issues are not countering the enthusiasm and optimism of the market.

“Companies want to be where the people are,” Tony Pricco, principal of Bridge Development Partners, said. “They are following the consumer market.”

As a result, communities and industrial sites located far from the population centers, or O’Hare, are having a harder time in attracting interest.

“But, rural and exurban areas can be aggressive with full-service properties, aggressive incentives, and labor skills to secure their fair share of this exciting industrial market,” Jeff Bennett, president of McColly Bennett Commercial, said.

North Central Illinois Economic Development Corp. is prominently being featured at regional industrial real estate events sponsored by the Illinois Real Estate Journal, CoreNet Global, Association of Industrial Real Estate, and Society of Industrial and Office Realtors.

“The Chicago region market is dynamic,” Ivan Baker, NCI president, said, “and we must be in front of the decision-makers and brokers in order to have our sites reviewed.”

The annual January Real Estate Forecast is one of the largest meetings of top northern Illinois brokers and developers.

Cooperative police force in Illinois Valley worth investigating

City leaders and police officials in Spring Valley, LaSalle, Peru and Oglesby have taken the unprecedented step of discussing how to implement more cooperation among their police departments. Their efforts could improve law enforcement for citizens and save substantial amounts of money, too. We applaud them.

P

olice departments are filled with brave men and women.

That’s pretty much a given.

Law enforcement personnel never know, from one day to the next, what kind of dangerous situations they might be called upon to deal with.

They must be ready to bravely face lawbreakers, respond to traffic crashes, and otherwise help to restore order when disorder arises.

A new kind of courage was demonstrated recently by four area police departments in Spring Valley, Peru, LaSalle and Oglesby.

They are talking about doing more to work together and share their limited resources.

We say, Hurray!

The mayors and police chiefs of those four Illinois Valley cities conducted a news conference Jan. 18 where they shared details of their previously quiet discussions about cooperating more than they already have.

LaSalle, Peru, Oglesby and Spring Valley already consolidated their dispatching services two years ago.

The Illinois Valley Regional Dispatch Center is based in Peru.

Peru is also where they are discussing the possibility of constructing a new regional police headquarters to be shared by the four departments. That idea emerged after Peru city officials, led by Peru Mayor Scott Harl, had been talking about building a new headquarters for that city’s police force.

Other possible benefits of cooperation among the four departments come in the areas of better training, better equipment, sharing available officers and investigators, and in general, lessening the duplication of services that is currently the case among the departments.

An additional major benefit involves cost. Cooperation among law enforcement is expected to save money — an amount estimated in

the millions of dollars in the coming years.

“Twenty years ago, this wouldn’t even have been a discussion, but we’re sharing schools and several other services, and this makes good financial sense,” Harl said.

The long-term potential financial savings of a shared police service is almost too big to comprehend. The figure they talked about at the news conference was $250 million in savings over the next 60 years.

“I think that number is staggering,” Spring Valley Mayor Walt Marini said.

We’re staggered by it, too.

Many details still need to be worked out, and officials promised the discussions would be transparent and that the public would be kept informed. Approval of a plan for construction of the shared police station is likely two years away, Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei said. Officials also said each depart-

are being postponed, or canceled, because there are not enough men and women to officiate them.

Anyone looking for unique ways to contribute to the local community should consider becoming a licensed high school official. For former high school athletes, officiating is a great way to stay close to the sport. Officiating helps people stay in shape, expands their social and professional network, and offers part-time work that is flexible, yet pays.

Another benefit of officiating is that individuals become role models so that teenagers in the community can learn life lessons that high school sports teach. Students learn to respect opponents and rules of the game, and the importance of practicing good sportsmanship.

The objectivity and integrity that officials display is an example that every young person needs to observe firsthand. In short, communities around the country will be stronger because of the life lessons that high school officials help teach the next generation.

We need dedicated men and women to become involved so that high school sports can continue to prosper for years to come.

Here’s LaSalle Mayor Jeff Grove’s viewpoint: “If we can enhance the law enforcement services of our cities, keep our citizens safer while still realizing long-term savings in the very substantial amounts we’re projecting, we certainly want to explore this possibility in greater detail.”

We applaud leaders and police chiefs from these four cities for embracing intergovernmental cooperation and taking bold steps to make it happen.

In an era of higher costs for government – driven by increasingly higher pension costs, for one thing – combined government services is a concept worth courageously exploring and implementing.

hen I scroll through the newsfeed on my Facebook page, I see so much negativity. I see politics and people throwing accusations and allegations. I see people hating and swearing and pointing fingers.

Some days, it seems to be ALL I see.

But then I look further. I look beyond the headlines to REALITY. I come from a small town. I love small town living, and I’ll tell you why. In my 48 years here, I have seen people rise up and band together when there is trouble or distress.

I have seen neighbors helping neighbors. I have seen strangers helping strangers.

When there is a need, it gets filled. When there is a disaster, it gets handled.

When there are tears, there is someone there to dry them.

I have seen humanity at it’s finest here in my little river town.

Don’t get me wrong, I have seen some petty junk, too. There is always someone who wants to tear people down. There is always some grumpy Gus who can’t stand to be happy, and so they try to drag others down with them.

In my family, we used to say (about a misspoken word), “You put the em-PHA-sis on the wrong sy-LLA-ble.” When we don’t say

When we don’t look at what is important, and don’t handle it properly, we can turn the tide of everything after that.

On Facebook one day (yes, I’m kind of a junkie, but it’s where I draw a lot of inspiration), one of my friends expressed this sentiment: “Just my observation. In all the little towns I’ve been to lately, I have found that all people, no matter what nationality, are getting along just fine. Actually seeming to go out of their way to just be nice. Why, in the past few years or so, has the news media promoted racism and discontent? I’m just not seeing it anywhere else but the news. Peace and love still reign across the USA!” It got me thinking about my personal experiences and how humanity is NOT lost.

There is a local town that had a businessman who was not Caucasian. In fact, he was Muslim.

Now, judging by the media and the current climate of our nation, I would have to say this man should be afraid to walk the streets of his small town, and he would surely fail in his business due to his beliefs.

That was not the reality, however. He had owned his business for decades and was a beloved member of the community. When a member of his family fell ill, the town rallied behind him and delivered meals and prayers and support. When he was forced to close his business because of circumstances, dozens of people aided him in packing and clearing his store.

He was loved. He was supported.

His family was nurtured in a loving environment.

When my nephew, who has Down syndrome, was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 13, people did not turn away. I saw quite the opposite. People ran to his side. There was a benefit planned that raised more than $35,000 to aid in financing his travels to and from St. Jude for his three-year chemo protocol.

The kid was spoiled rotten with gifts. It was completely overwhelming. Our family couldn’t go anywhere without inquiries about his health, his status. There was genuine concern and compassion around every corner. There were more than two dozen people at each

of the planning meetings for the benefit, and generous donations of time, money and items to be auctioned on his behalf. There was love and support, not condemnation and discrimination because of his disability or disease.

Every day in my LOCAL news, I read stories of benefits being planned. I see schools supporting a sick student. I see pleas for clothing and supplies for fire victims.

On a bigger scale, when I watch national news and see disasters being reported, I can look BEYOND the tragedy and see countless stories, told and untold, of humanity at it’s finest.

People step up and take action to make someone’s life better or easier.

Aren’t we called to do just that?

Aren’t we called to empower and enable and lift up those around us?

Aren’t we called to be a shoulder, a supporter, a lover of our fellow man?

Aren’t we called to SEE these things?

Aren’t we called to put the em-PHA-sis on the right sy-LLA-ble and make sure the word, sentence, paragraph, chapter and book has a happy ending?

The loss of the American yeoman class

I

should probably be writing another column about Illinois politics. I think that is what good friend Len (Rob) Small (the Small Newspaper Group) and I had in mind when he invited me to start this column, now almost a decade ago.

I travel in remarkably wide circles.

From “workingmen’s” pubs and diners in my rural area (between the once-booming, metal-bending Quad-Cities and Peoria), to the cloistered settings of the Union League Club of Chicago and manor houses on the glittering North Shore of Lake Michigan above the city.

This past week, for illustration, I dropped in at a diner near my hometown. I couldn’t help but be struck by the couple dozen customers who, rather languidly or so, it seemed, downed their gargantuan breakfasts of eggs, cakes, sausages, biscuits and gravy.

All middle age, men and some wives, the customers had a grey cast, overweight, sloppy of dress; they appeared dejected, down on themselves, defeated, in little hurry

On the North Shore, you see the exact opposite.

I thought to myself: The parents of these woebegone folks were probably part of “the yeoman class,” and that these woebegones expected to be part of that class. But the yeoman class has largely vanished, or so I think. Let me explain.

Yeomen in 18th-century England were small, freehold farmers, the equivalent of the middle class, you might say. They were organized to serve, under gentlemen, in fighting the country’s wars.

I think that, from Henry Ford’s $5-a-day-workers in the early 1900s to about 1970 (with a hiatus for the Depression), the decently paid metal-bending workers of America

became our “yeoman class.”

They fought our wars, became the heart of our middle class, coached Little League and became members of small town Lions Clubs. They bought American-made cars and pickups; their descendants in the diner still do — just try to find a Ford or GM car on the North Shore.

But that world of working with your hands is largely gone. Leaders of distressed rural and urban areas clamor for jobs. They are not, however, talking about the jobs now in demand, but instead jobs their people can actually do, mostly with their hands.

This week’s Crain’s Chicago Business reports on today’s 10 hottest jobs. They are in finance, tech, science, analysis—not jobs my rural dispossessed can generally do.

Maybe some of us are simply not smart enough to do the jobs that are coming on line. Indeed, I think my brain is dominated by its touchy-feely right hemisphere, when today’s world is dominated by the engineering logic of the left

hemisphere.

The old yeoman class is little needed now, withered, scared.

One result is these dispossessed in my diner. They work at whatever jobs are available, and for much less than their parents — and they resent it.

They voted for Trump; two out of three in my rural county did, above the historic GOP vote here.

The divide between traditional labor and capital has become a chasm. There was always the “right side” and the “wrong side” of the tracks. But the sides were in the same community. There is no wrong side in the enclaves on the North Shore, nor much right side left in my rural communities.

More yeomen would actually be in the best interests of capital; if the wealth distribution becomes too lopsided, “labor” won’t have the money to buy what capital generates.

The Wildcats beat Amboy, 39-24; Marquette 40-30 and Mendota 39-15.

They lost to St. Bede 42-31.

“Good day of wrestling,” said coach Jerry Kreiwald. “Aranda, Mecagni and McCutcheon all went 4-0 for the day. Giving up 30 points to St. Bede in forfeits before we start makes it tough to beat them.”

Ben Aranda at 170 pounds beat Amboy’s Avery Shaw, 10-5; Mendota’s Logan Eppert, 5-4 and St. Bede’s Sartain, 10-2. He received a forfeit against Marquette.

Joe Mecagni at 195 pounds pinned Amboy’s Chis Morris at 2:33; and defeated Marquette’s Keegan Jaros, 14-3. He received forfeit wins over Mendota and St. Bede.

Putnam County High School students participated in the annual Augustana College Honor Band held Jan. 14 and 15. The two-day festival included more than 200 high school musicians from Illinois and Iowa, all who came together for more than nine hours of rehearsals to prepare selections for a finale concert. GRANVILLE — Putnam County FFA will have a pancake breakfast, along with a labor auction, from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at Putnam County High School in Granville.

Tickets are available from any FFA member are $6 each. The breakfast will includes pancakes, sausage, applesauce, milk, coffee and orange juice.

A labor auction is when you bid on an FFA member to come work for eight hours at anytime between now and July. Different jobs they can do include: yard work, house work, cutting logs, babysitting, organizing closets, organizing sheds or garages, power washing porches and houses, and anything else you can come up with. If you want them to be using a ladder, that needs to be discussed between the student and their parent. Each student will have a list of items they will be comfortable doing, so bidding can be done according to that. The labor auction will start at 8:30 a.m. and everyone is welcome.

Check in will begin at 5 p.m. with trivia starting at 5:30 p.m. Original questions from PCCK’s trivia panel consist of categories of all subjects from pop culture to geography so there is something for everyone.

Heart of Fashion event will feature cocktail brunch and fashion show OTTAWA — Festivities Unlimited will present “Heart of Fashion,” a fresh and fun style show on Sunday, Feb. 11.

More than 45 local male and female models will showcase fashions from 12 shops and boutiques in the Ottawa, LaSalle, Peru, Spring Valley and Princeton areas. Bishop Daniel Jenky, Diocese of Peoria, recently granted St. Margaret’s permission to take possession of this nativity scene that had been part of the Immaculate Conception parish. Crafted in 1898, this piece was one of the few things that survived the fire of 1917 that ravaged the parsonage and church, sparing the school. St. Margaret’s thanked Bishop Jenky for this honor, and they are especially grateful to Jane Kunkel for her efforts in securing this piece of art and religious history. This scene is currently on display in the lower lobby.

ST. MARGARET’S HOSPITAL BRIEFS Diabetes education class announced SPRING VALLEY — A free diabetes education class will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, at St. Margaret’s Hospital.

The class will cover an overview of diabetes, complications and monitoring, nutrition and diet, medications, stress management and social assistance, exercise and activity, and foot, skin and oral care. Participants will also receive a free glucometer. For more information, call 815-664-1501.

Medication review service SPRING VALLEY — Participants are asked to bring in their prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

Pharmacists will be available to discuss medications

Mom’s Special Helper sibling class on Feb. 3 SPRING VALLEY — St. Margaret’s Hospital will hold a Mom’s Special Helper sibling class for soon-to-be big brothers and sisters at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, in Room 309 on the third floor of the hospital.

The class will be conducted through the use of a video, demonstrations and storybook readings. A tour of the Family Birthing Centre will be provided, and participants will receive refreshments, certificates, a gift bag and souvenir handouts. Parents are encouraged to

Family and Friends CPR course SPRING VALLEY — St. Margaret’s Hospital and the American Heart Association will offer a CPR class at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the First Floor Presentation Room.

The Family and Friends course is an adult and infant community CPR course and does not meet CPR certification requirements of employment or required professional credentials. The class cost is $20.
