Granville church will ring bell daily to show support for health care workers during COVID-19 Rev. Ron McNeill of the United Church of Christ in Granville rings the church bell to thank health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The bell will ring every day at 3 p.m. for the next month.

GRANVILLE — Every day at 3 p.m. for the next month, United Church of Christ of Granville will ring its church bell as a thank you to health care workers in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

U.C.C. Granville has invited surrounding churches to participate and show support for the physicians, nurses, hospital employees, first responders, emergency personnel and caregivers.

“We hope this small gesture might remind all of you how appreciated and important you are to so many,” said Rev. Ron McNeill of U.C.C. Granville.

The daily bell ringing will continue until Sunday, Feb. 28.

Toys in the Pantry serves about 125 kids GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com GRANVILLE — Last month, Toys in the Pantry served about 125 kids from around Putnam County. The organization also provided seniors with Christmas gifts, as well.

Volunteers who operate Toys in the Pantry are thankful for all the individuals, businesses and villages for their generosity during the Christmas season.

“The response was once again overwhelming,” said Cathy Oliveri, chairman of the Toys in the Pantry organization. “As you may know, I had some health problems these past few months, but the ‘elves’ didn’t quit working. I can never thank Brenda, Tootsie, Sue and Gayle enough for taking over and ensuring that everyone was taken care of.”

A special thanks goes out to the Putnam County Food Pantry, Jim Hartman’s motorcycle group, First Lutheran Church, Granville Township, Lake Thunderbird and bowling leagues for their generous donations to Toys in the Pantry.

PUTNAM COUNTY LIBRARY DISTRICT

Putnam County Public Library District reopened its doors this week for patrons to reenter the branches.

The decision was made to reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 20, due to recent order by Gov. JB Pritzker to change the region’s tier status during the pandemic.

Patrons are required to wear masks when they enter the branches. There are shields at

programs online.

Visit the library district’s website at putnamcountylibrary. org and use the online catalog http://search.prairiecat.info to find materials. The library district does have its online digital library collection with ereadIllinois, Hoopla, Overdrive/Libby, Kanopy, RBDigtial, Universal classes patrons can continue to view.

Putnam County Library District reopens doors as region’s COVID tier status improves

GRANVILLE — After an exhaustive search, Granville Police Department now has a new chief.

Michael Padilla was sworn in as the new police chief during the board’s January meeting to replace retired Chief Kevin Moore.

Padilla, who most recently worked as an officer in Oglesby, has a total of 16 years of law enforcement experience.

Padilla served two years with the Oregon (IL) Police Department where he started his career as a police officer. He then took a job with the Oglesby Police Department to be closer to his hometown area and worked there for 14 years.

“My positions at the Oglesby Police Department included being a field training officer, juvenile officer, detective and I also served in supervisory role as a sergeant for the past five years,” he said.

“I’m excited to be a part of the Granville community,” Padilla said.

“I’ve always liked being a police officer in a small town where I can get to know everyone. I plan to move to the Granville area with my family from Oglesby in the near future so we can be a part of the community.

“I will have an open door policy to the community if they need to address any concerns they may have. I’m a firm believer in community-oriented policing, especially in

a small town and will try to build on our relationships with the public. I also plan on building on our relationships with other local police agencies and working as partners with them.” he said.

“My main priority will be to keep the citizens, businesses and schools safe. I have some big shoes to fill replacing Police Chief Kevin Moore.

He has done a great job for the city for the past 30 years. He helped make it a smooth transition for me to take over his position.”

Moore, while thanking the board for it’s support over the course of his 30-year tenure, gave his endorsement of Padilla, telling the board he wasn’t going anywhere until he felt they found the best candidate possible to replace him.

“Mike’s going to fit in the village really well,“ Moore said, “I wasn’t going to leave until I felt comfortable.”

Padilla said one of his goals for the police department is to keep up with all the innovative law enforcement technology that will help the department run more efficiently.

“I plan to look for new training courses to help keep our officers safe and well prepared to handle any type of major incidents. I also plan on implementing some community programs, such as the Shop with a Cop program,” he said.

“I think one of the big challenges for here and most small size departments is finding and retaining good personnel. I have a great group of

HENRY — University of Illinois Extension would like to welcome Samantha Smoode to the Marshall-Putnam Ag in the Classroom Community Worker position.

Smoode is a graduate of Illinois State University in agriculture business. She is also a Putnam County native, graduating from Putnam County High School.

As a PC Progressors 4-H Community Club alumni and a former FFA member, she is excited to fill this position. Growing up in Put-

nam County, she has fond memories of the Ag in the Classroom program and is excited to share the program’s activities with local youth.

The Ag in the Classroom program provides supplemental classroom education programs for teachers in grades pre-K through eighth about agriculture and its many benefits and products used in our daily lives. The programs are fun, hands-on and meet state standards.

Smoode will be working from the Marshall-Putnam Extension Office to provide this program to local schools. She is available to make accommodations for classrooms with Zoom lessons, pre-recorded lessons or multi-session lessons.

Putnam County Rotary finds strength in service

GRANVILLE — Putnam County Rotary invites those who work or live in Putnam County to a virtual “open house” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4. Beginning a new year, the club hopes to expand its efforts with participation of more volunteers.

Whether you are interested in helping in one or more Rotary projects, or might consider joining, PC Rotary welcomes participation of all community members.

Current projects include support of two Rotary “Little Free Pantries” in Standard and McNabb, renovation of a common room for victims of domestic abuse at Freedom House, sponsorship of Interact Clubs at the junior high and high schools, co-hosting of local blood drives, awarding of several scholarships, recognition of non-member community volunteers, annual dictionary distri-

bution to third graders, Christmas projects benefiting children and seniors, and support of other local organizations doing good things for local residents.

Though the club is not yet able to meet again in person, members and volunteers can participate by Zoom or telephone during the club’s brief meeting on Feb. 4 and future meetings held twice monthly.

The virtual open house hopes to expand the roster of those willing to volunteer for projects of their choosing, when able to do so, without further obligation. There is no requirement that members attend or participate in every meeting or project, and volunteers need not become members.

For volunteers who also wish to join Rotary, the club offers individual, corporate and family memberships at very low cost.

ADAM AND IDA DECK COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP HENNEPIN VOCATIONAL GRANT KENNEY GRANT The Village of Hennepin would like to remind Putnam County graduating Seniors that the deadline is fast approaching to apply for the Adam and Ida Deck College Scholarship. The scholarships will be subsidized through proceeds realized from the Adam and Ida Deck Scholarship Fund. First place recipient will receive four consecutive yearly payments of $1200, and the Second place recipient will receive $1000 per year.

These scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic ability.

The Hennepin Vocational Grant provides for a grant of $1200 for first place, $1000 for second place and $800 for third place. This Grant is also subsidized through the Adam and Ida Deck Scholarship Fund.

These grants are for one year only.

Applicants for the above awards must live in Hennepin Township.

Deadline for application submission is February 15th.

In addition, Kenney grants are also available with a one-time award of $500. This Grant is subsidized through proceeds realized from the Harold and Julia Kenney Education Fund. No limit of recipients.

DAVID ‘DAVE’ J. PETTIT MARK — David “Dave” Joseph Pettit, 50, of Mark passed away on Saturday, Jan. 16, at his residence with his loving family and friends by his side.

A private service was held Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel, Granville.

Cremation rites were accorded following the service.

Dave was born on June 16, 1970, in Spring Valley to Jim and Constance (Deuth) Pettit.

He married Cynthia Ossola on June 11, 1994. Dave graduated from Putnam County High School in the Class of 1988. After he graduated he joined the United States Air Force. He was employed

by Taylor Made Machine Company.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Dave was an avid Steelers fan and a White Sox fan. He enjoyed singing and vacationing with his family and friends. Dave loved being with his children and family and having “just one more” with friends.

Survivors include his father, Jim Pettit of Granville; his wife, Cynthia of Mark; two sons, Nathan (Rendi) Teauseau of Spring Valley and Justin Pettit of Mark; two daughters, Taylor Pettit of Peru and Kali Pettit of Mark; one brother, Michael (Patty) Pettit of Zion; one sister, Kristin (Chad) Tonozzi of Mark; and two grandchildren, Tucker and Braxton Teauseau.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

Steven G. Miller, 42, of Ladd pleaded guilty to aggravated home repair fraud, a Class 2 felony. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail, which is to be served concurrently with a Bureau County sentence

LETTER TO THE EDITOR To the Editor, More than one in six women and one in 17 men will experience stalking in their lifetime. I am writing to you now because January is National Stalking Awareness Month (NSAM) — a time to come together as a community to recognize and fight this dangerous crime.

Stalking is a known risk factor for subsequent escalation to violence and even murder.

Stalking behavior is intended to intimidate and frighten the victim and is often perpetrated by a previous intimate partner or someone known to the victim, although not always. Make no mistake, this behavior constitutes a criminal act against the victim, often one that seems harmless, which is why it is important to focus on the context of the perpetrator’s actions.

Stalkers often engage in specific behaviors designed to incite fear in victims, criminalizing what would be otherwise normal behavior. Consider this scenario: A woman comes home to find a lit candle in her living room. She calls the police and hysterically explains that she did not leave it that way when she left

the house. “He’s followed me here,” she reports. She moved to a new city to escape her ex-boyfriend who was stalking her. She thought he did not know where she relocated.

She is now terrified.

Other stalking behaviors include unwanted calls and texts, starting rumors about the victim, following the victim both in-person and on social media, showing up where the victim is and giving unwanted gifts.

A collective community response is required to end stalking. Since victims are most likely to tell a friend or loved one, it is important that everyone can identify this criminality. They can then assist the victim to seek help and safety.

I also wish to point out that Freedom House is a strong resource for victims of stalking. We provide potent legal advocacy for stalking victims and counseling, as well as educational presentations on stalking for schools, church groups, social clubs and the workplace.

Schools working to get athletes back in action

In light of the recent developments with the IDPH moving Region 1 from Tier 2 mitigations to Tier 1, Putnam County’s girls basketball team has resumed practices for the first time this winter.

Lady Panthers coach Jared Sale said he was “beyond thrilled” to be able to spend time and get the gang together again.

PC Athletic Director Chris Newsome said “it’s such a breath of fresh air” seeing kids have the opportunity to get back in the gym and on the field. He cautions that they don’t go “too hard too fast,” concerned with student-athletes’ physical and mental health dealing with the roller-coaster like ride of hopes for a competitive season.

“While it looks like a competitive season for low risk and even medium risk sports will likely happen, unless something big changes, high risk sports (basketball, football) won’t be allowed to compete,” he said. “For those high risk sports, being able to practice is one thing, and don’t get me wrong, it’s better than nothing, but as so many other states are proving, winter sports can occur safely with proper mitigations.

“I’m fearful that the governor, IDPH and IHSA are providing false hopes. These kids, as well as the seniors who graduated last year, and their coaches have been on one heck

of an emotional journey.”

Newsome is hopeful that the IHSA will provide its member schools with defined seasons after their Jan. 27 meeting so that the student-athletes, coaches, families and communities can finally know what’s going on.

“For the mean time, our teams will take advantage of the opportunity to practice with each other and their coaches with the hopes of competing this spring and summer,” Newsome said.

Some schools have followed PC’s lead and have started to hold basketball practices.

Bureau Valley will focus on its winter sports/activities and not hold contact days for spring and summer sports at this time. Basketball practices got underway Jan. 21 with cheerleading, dance and Scholastic Bowl following this week.

Princeton Athletic Director Jeff Ohlson said last week he was still working through the process and waiting to see what further information will become available and then begin to work on a plan.

LaMoille Athletic Director Wanda DeLong anticipated starting contact days for basketball and volleyball this week, and when they get confirmation from the IHSA about the winter, spring and summer schedules, they will modify their practice schedule then.

“It is most important to get student/athletes back to playing and finding joy in the sport,” she said.

“My hope is that they will not combine too many sports at one time in a season. If that happens it will make it difficult for small schools to field teams because the students will have to choose between sports. We will do our best to give our student/athletes the best athletic experience we can.”

DeLong said she doesn’t want to get the kids’ hopes up only to have to disappoint them again.

DePue Athletic Director Robbie Fox said last week, she was waiting on her administration and the school board for more instruction if they will be making changes to sports, noting the sports that are being allowed at this time they do not offer. She said she have a meeting with the Little Ten Conference soon to discuss schedules.

LaSalle-Peru athletic director Dan Le said it’s been hectic since the region moved to Tier 1 mitigations, but he’s happy to have sports starting up.

“It obviously feels good to be able to resume activities again, and getting to the point where we can start planning practices and competitions,” Le said. “There are great benefits for everyone involved to be able to be active and participating in extracurriculars again. Obviously there are the physical benefits, but the mental health benefits and the social/emotional health benefits as well.”

starting practices Jan. 20, while boys basketball got in the gym Jan. 21.

“We need to rebuild the schedule, (and) we’re working on scheduling in terms of balancing facilities and giving those teams time to get in and have workouts as well,” Le said.

BV’s Bickett is afraid the calendar is running out against the IHSA being able to hold basketball.

“Each day that passes by, each week, it makes it difficult, because smaller schools in our area, we can’t afford to share athletes, and it’s just not fair to the kids, not fair to the coaches to overlap seasons. I would say we’re not in favor of overlapping any seasons, but we’re also at the point, we can’t keep backing things up. Eventually, something’s got to happen,” Bickett said.

“There’s a pretty important meeting down in Bloomington on Jan. 27 and I assume there will be quite a bit of information come out of it in regards to sports and their season and what that schedule is going to look like.”

Bickett believes that normal spring sports that missed their season last year are a major priority for the IHSA. “That leads me to believe that football and basketball, those high risk sports, are maybe in trouble. And maybe, we can sneak in a volleyball season with it being a medium risk sport. I think there’s some good things to come for the low-risk sports,” he said.

About 10 kids virtually attend class from their homes in China, even though they are 14 hours ahead of Chicago time. Students there fire up their computers at 11 o’clock at night to remotely participate in 9 a.m. classes in Peru, finishing their school day around dawn.

“We are around the clock,” superintendent Eve Postula said.

Marcia Wagner, dean of residential programs, said St. Bede didn’t plan it this way. Had they pitched an online learning program to stu-

dents in China, there would have been few takers. Teenagers don’t wake easily in daylight, let alone the witching hour.

But St. Bede actively had recruited boarding students from China, and about half returned home for summer vacation last year when COVID-19 began surging across the United States. Thanks to COVID-19, they’re stuck in China.

“Some of them chose to stay here over the summer,” Wagner said, noting that 11 boarders stayed put.

“They haven’t been home going on two years. The ones who did return home? Well, now there’s a travel ban and they can’t [come] back, so in order to continue educating them we had to come up with a remote learning program.”

Postula said she’s had discussions about keeping some kind of

virtual learning program in place for international students and maybe for stateside students, as well. St. Bede has, after all, attracted a smattering of students from outside Starved Rock Country.

One of the stateside boarders is freshman Ally Holtkamp, a 14-yearold transfer from Crystal Lake who wanted to try boarding school after becoming dissatisfied with virtual learning at her public high school.

Holtkamp said boarding school was a good choice for her, and she enjoys being on campus. While she’s in a decided minority as an out-of-town boarder, her classmates have been “pretty accepting.”

Postula anticipates that most outof-area students will, along with Holtkamp, prefer to board rather than participate online. That goes double for the Chinese stu-

dents, for whom St. Bede appeals because they can immerse in U.S. culture while beefing up their college applications and brushing up their English.

Neverthless, St. Bede thinks they can maintain their Chinese connection by making online studies a secondary option for families who can’t afford to board or who run afoul of bureaucratic holdups like not getting a visa.

And the pandemic isn’t the only concern in getting the students abroad to come back to the Peru campus. Violent protests across major U.S. cities may be making parents think twice about sending their kids to study on U.S. soil.

“It’s making parents of 14-yearolds and 15-year-olds uncomfortable and, frankly, scared,” Postula said.

IVCC dental assisting program to offer clinics

The IVCC Dental Assisting program will offer free or reduced-cost dental clinics for IVCC students, staff and the community from 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays from Jan. 29 through May 7 (excluding March 19) in the dental lab (B214).

Screening days for new patients only are Jan. 29 and Feb. 5 and include X-rays, a comprehensive exam, treatment plans and oral hygiene instruction. Recommended treatment will be scheduled. Treatments are free for IVCC students, and employees and

qualifying patients are charged $30.

The May 7 clinic is for small restorations at $25 per restoration. The clinics do not provide any oral surgery, removable or fixed prosthetics (dentures/partials), orthodontic procedures or prescribe any medications. IVCC Dental Assisting students have taken courses such as Getting Ahead of the Next Stage of the COVID-19 Crisis as well as Interim Dental Infection Prevention and Control Guidance for the COVID 19 Response. All IVCC faculty, staff, stu-

dents and volunteering dentists will be following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment. Patients will be required to fill out a prescreening form before entering the building, have their temperature checked at the door and use antimicrobial mouth rinses before treatment begins. Patients must come alone unless they are a minor.

“Our students are excited to start their clinics to hone their skills,”

program coordinator Heather Seghi said in a news release. “They need a required number of patients, so reliable patients are desired as there is not time for rescheduling missed or canceled appointments. We do have outside resources for those unable to have the cleaning completed in our clinic, and we are very happy to help in any way we can to ensure they receive the best care.”
