Marquis donation helps to fund therapy services for local kids SRRC receives check for more than $13,000 HENNEPIN — A now yearly tradition, Marquis companies and employees pick a charity to fund for Christmas. This season, the non-profit Starved Rock Regional Center (SRRC) was chosen as a charity to receive a donation of more than $13,000.

“Our company noticed the growing need for therapy services for young children, and Starved Rock Regional Center is the premier provider of occupational, developmental and speech therapies for children struggling in these areas,” Mark Marquis, CEO of Marquis companies, said.

“We know our contribution to these vital therapy services will

allow SRRC to reach more children with their life-changing services and set these children on the right track for a bright future.”

The Marquis companies incorporate a special incentive to each employee’s donation.

The company matches each dollar by five times.

“My family believes in being good stewards of our community and knows how rewarding it is to see the children in our community thrive,” Marquis said.

“Marquis employees also see that benefit, and we want to help their generous contribution extend even further. That is why we decide to multiply each employee’s gift times five. This year, our employees contributed over $13,000 to SRRC and their mission to provide therapy services to children with and with-

out special needs. We are all proud to take part in this life-changing charity.”

Board reminder: No U-turns in middle of McCoy Street blocks Village looks to do more to enforce law

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media GRANVILLE — The village of Granville advises residents and visitors that in its business district (McCoy Street), there are posted “No U-turn” signs as well as double yellow lines indicating it is illegal to do U-turns in the middle of the block.

Motorists are allowed to do U-turns at the intersections but not the middle of the block for parking.

“This is notice to the public that crossing the center lines to park on the opposite side of the street is a violation of state statute. Violators will be ticketed,” a press release from the village indicated.

Granville Village Board members recently discussed confusion among residents about the rules, as well

as complete disregard of the traffic rules by many drivers.

During the meeting, board member Jeff Greathouse said a police officer had told a motorist no U-turn was allowed in a location where it was allowed.

He said the village should make a clear statement, and police should start writing tickets for offenders.

Census update Granville village officials are emphasizing the importance of residents participating in the U.S. Census.

Information gathered in the Census can help determine what the village receives in terms of funding and grants. Village trustee Jim Pettit noted the losses in population Illinois has been having, and how that can affect the power of the state in the U.S. legislative system.

“It looks like we’re going to lose one or two congressmen,” Pettit said.

Electronics recycling Granville has an opportunity to host an electronics recycling event at no cost — if volunteers from the village and surrounding communities will help run the event.

The village board learned that a recycling company can drop off pallets, and if volunteers collect the items and shrink wrap the pallets, the company will load a semi and take it away.

If people drop off enough to fill a truck, the village would not receive a bill.

Village Trustee Shelby Osborne said she would be willing to orchestrate the event if there is enough help from volunteers from Granville and surrounding communities.

Village trustees noted how Lance Korter used to run a recycling event in Cedar Point, with Mark, Granville and Standard pitching in.

The village secretary and treasurer said she expects to receive more details in the months to come.

LaSalle County Broadcasting received authorization Dec. 31 from the Federal Communications Commission to transfer broadcast licenses for radio stations WLPO, WAJK and WLWF to Starved Rock Media Inc. “We closed on the sale of radio operations to Starved Rock Media at about noon today,” said Joyce McCullough, president of LaSalle County Broadcasting Corp.

McCullough closed out her career as the radio stations’ general manager on New Year’s Eve, and longtime local radio

personality John Spencer became general manager on New Year’s Day. Spencer will be general manager and is president of Starved Rock Media Inc. As of midnight Jan. 1, Starved Rock Media Inc. owned and began operating WLPO, WAJK and WLWF (96.5 The Wolf).

Spencer, president and owner of Starved Rock Media Inc., is starting his 28th year at the radio stations located east of Illinois Valley Community College. Spencer joined the staff as morning show host on WAJK and as production coordinator for LaSalle County Broadcasting.

“This wouldn’t have happened without Cathy Miller and Joyce McCullough’s commitment to keeping these stations local,” Spencer said of the sale.

“And the stations are a legacy to longtime chief engineer Steve Vogler, who passed away Oct. 1.”

Miller sold the NewsTribune and Agri-News newspapers to Shaw Media around Labor Day 2019.

LaSalle County Broadcasting celebrated the 70th anniversary of WLPO-AM two years ago. The local radio stations have evolved through the years, but listeners should not expect many major changes.

“I’ve been involved in the day-to-day operations for a number of years, and obviously changes will happen; they’re inevitable. But we have no desire or intent to make any significant changes immediate at three successful radio stations,” Spencer said.

“There have been subtle tweaks to WAJK since I’ve been here, but WAJK has pretty much stayed in its lane, providing top-40 music for adults,” Spencer said. WLPO features a combination of news, talk and classic rock including a popular morning program.

New trail highlights waterfowling, conservation From Hennepin to Peoria, trail features 10 waypoints of historical significance along Illinois River A new vehicular interpretive trail from Hennepin to Peoria invites motorists to trace the rich heritage of waterfowling and conservation rooted in the Illinois River Valley.

Ducks Unlimited and the Miles C. Hauter Foundation have established the Miles C. Hauter Trail, a series of informational panels at 10 historical waypoints throughout the Illinois River Road National Scenic Byway.

The route winds along Routes 29 and 26, from Hennepin south to Peoria. Along the way, trail visitors can learn about the area’s duck hunting history and explore the conservation work done by Ducks Unlimited and its partners to conserve Illinois River wetlands.

Through Ducks Unlimited’s Big Rivers Initiative conservation program, more than 7,000 acres of backwater lakes and wetlands have been protected, enhanced or restored along the river. Most of these properties have been transferred to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to be managed as wildlife habitat with public access.

The waypoints, and their significance, are as follows: • Bass Pro Shops — Since its founding in 1972, Bass Pro Shops has inspired people to conserve the great outdoors by connecting them with nature. Today, Bass Pro continues to partner with organizations such as Ducks Unlimited to help conserve wildlife habitat and to protect outdoor heritage. Bass Pro is a partner on the Miles C. Hauter Interpretive Trail.

• Charles Perdew Museum — The museum showcases the works of famous folk artists Charles and Edna Perdew of Henry. Their hand-carved and painted wildlife sculptures (decoys) and duck calls

were originally used by hunters to attract waterfowl within shooting range and are still recognized as among the best in the world. The museum is housed in the Perdew’s workshop.

• Chillicothe Bottoms — This 232acre property was originally owned by the Santa Fe Railroad. It was purchased and used as a duck club, referred to as Chillicothe Bottoms and Santa Fe Farms Duck Club.

After the property was unmanaged and unused for several years, Ducks Unlimited purchased it in 2012, improved the land and donated it to the Illinois Audubon Society to be managed for bird habitat.

The content of this interpretive story was developed in close partnership with the Peoria Riverfront Museum to complement the interpretive themes of the museum’s Illinois River exhibit.

During his lifetime, Miles C. Hauter supported two Ducks Unlimited wetland restoration projects along the Illinois River, Weis Lake and Wightman Lake. These projects were designed to provide multiple conservation benefits to waterfowl, wildlife and people.

The Wightman Lake project is an outstanding conservation success

and is now the centerpiece of a new DU effort, the Illinois River Waterfowl Heritage Project, to educate the public about wetland conservation and the waterfowling heritage of the Illinois River Valley.

“Wetland conservation projects are not always easily accessible or identifiable, and the Hauter Trail’s goal is to minimize those challenges for easy viewing,” said Mark Schore, Illinois Ducks Unlimited volunteer and Illinois DU conservation committee chairman.

“These engagement opportunities introduce people to the outdoors, provide context on why these wetlands are important to many species of wildlife and highlight Ducks Unlimited’s mission of conserving

• Jenkins Marsh and Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area

— These properties are linked as waterfowl-rich areas along the Illinois River migratory route. Ducks Unlimited in 2010 purchased the 246-acre Jenkins Marsh property, restored migratory duck habitat and transferred it to Woodford State Fish and Wildlife Area. The state area is a 2,900-acre property of bottomland forest and backwater lakes contained by natural bluffs shaped by the lock and dam system and diversion of Lake Michigan in the 1900s.

• Marshall State Fish and Wildlife Area — This crucial 6,000-acre

wildlife area provides key habitat for migrating waterfowl across both sides of the Illinois River. It contains backwater lakes created by the lock and dam systems and diversion of Lake Michigan during the 1900s. • Midway Duck Inn — Known by locals as the meeting place for duck hunters on the Illinois River, the Midway Duck Inn is where sportsmen and women come to “talk ducks and tell lies.â€? It carries on a role of a staple in the local community that started in the late 1800s. • Peoria Riverfront Museum —

Losing a job can be devastating.

Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll.

Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures.

While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter.

A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss.

Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more.

These strategies can help professionals who recently found themselves out of work avoid financial difficulties.

• Get references. Leave on amicable terms and ask your former

employer for a reference. You should not burn any bridges, as a good reference can be invaluable as you look for your next opportunity.

• Live off of cash reserves first.

Before cashing in investments or retirement accounts, tap your emergency fund first. If you have any tangible assets, like an unused car or a boat sitting idle, sell these items for cash to tide you over.

• Contact your credit card company. Many companies have pro-

grams designed to help customers facing financial hardships. Reach out promptly to let them know you may be anticipating missed payments. It is better if you initiate contact rather than going into default. The same tactic can be used for mortgage or rent payments.

• Assess your budget carefully. You naturally will have to make

concessions that impact finances, particularly as it pertains to spending. Cut back on non-necessities like dining out, gym memberships, streaming subscriptions, and other luxuries. Avoid adding other new debt.

• Apply for aid benefits. There may be government benefits, such as low-cost health care or food subsidies, that can help you get through financial difficulties until you get

Financial changes are a fact of life. Changes occur at every turn, including when students leave home for the first time, people get married and when families purchase their first home. One of the biggest financial changes occurs when starting a family.

Starting a family can come with a measure of sticker shock, particularly for young couples without much financial history. Since the 1960s, the costs associated with raising a family have risen exponentially, says the financial resource MarketWatch.

Between 2000 and 2010, costs rose by 40 percent. Data from Money.com indicates that, as of 2015, American parents spent, on average, more than $230,000 on child costs from birth until the age of 17.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that today that number is closer to $245,000 per child, which does not include the cost of college.

BabyCenter.com offers a cost comparison tool to help prospective parents get started on creating family budgets.

When mulling the cost of starting a family, prospective parents can ask themselves the following questions to get a handle on their finances.

• Do I have adequate health insurance? Pew Research states

that expenses for a delivery can range from $3,000 to upward of $37,000 per child for a normal vaginal delivery, and from $8,000 to $70,000 if a C-section or special care is needed. Consider how much your health insurance will cover and how much adding a child to a policy will increase your rates.

• Will I need daycare? In order to afford added expenses, both parents may have to work. BabyCenter. com states that a family’s average

childcare costs are roughly $755 per month.

• Can I afford life insurance?

Once you begin a family, it is important for both parents to have a life insurance policy in place to provide for surviving family members in the event of an untimely death.

Once down payments have been made and closing costs have been paid, homeowners may still be staring down sizable expenses as they begin to tackle any repairs that need to be made.

Home maintenance and renovations involve a certain measure of trepidation. Even after vetting contractors and establishing budgets, homeowners may worry that repairs will unearth problems that snowball into expensive fixes.

Planning ahead for such projects and learning to recognize issues that tend to be costly can help home-

owners weather any storms that may arise.

• Foundation issues: A strong foundation is key to any home. If there is a problem with the foundation, it can be unsafe to live in the house. The foundation repair company Foundation Experts advises that foundation fixes can range from $4,000 to upward of $100,000 depending on the scale of the job. Clogged gutters and water pooling around the foundation can contribute to damage, so water issues must be remedied first.

• Roof damage: A roof is a key barrier between the indoors and outdoors. Roofs must remain in tiptop shape. The home improvement resource HomeAdvisor says that

a roof repair or replacement can cost between $3,000 and $12,000. But homeowners also must budget for the cost of removing the old roofing materials and fixing any damage to the interior of the home. Inspecting the roof and making repairs as you go is key to avoiding a big headache.

• Siding replacement: Another costly project can be replacing the siding. Siding may need to be replaced if there is water/wind damage or penetration from insects.

Spot repairs may be relatively inexpensive. However, the home improvement resource Modernize says the average siding installation project can cost between $5,500 and $15,000, depending on the materials homeowners choose.

• HVAC update: Keeping a home at a comfortable temperature is also a matter of safety. If a system gives out, homeowners may be scrambling for a solution. Yearly inspections and upkeep, which includes changing system filters regularly, can help identify potential problems. Neglect is one of the main contributors to the failure of heating and cooling equipment. Based on national averages, a whole-house HVAC system can cost between $4,000 and $12,000.

These are some of the more costly repairs homeowners can expect.

Keeping on top of the home will help mitigate damage and could extend the life of major home components.

METRO NEWS SERVICE Monthly budgets help people make the most of their money. While a person’s income will affect how much they can spend on housing, food and clothing each month, another, more abstract factor can have a big impact on monthly budgets as well.

Nearly every adult has a credit score, which can fluctuate daily. Various factors, including a person’s age and track record in regard to paying bills, combine to produce a credit score.

According to the credit reporting agency Experian, credit scores range from 300 to 850, though most consumers’ scores fall somewhere between 600 and 750. The Fair Isaac Corporation create what’s known as a FICO Score, which is used by many lenders to determine prospective borrowers’ credit worthiness.

FICO scores are often characterized using five terms: • Very poor: Scores between 300 and 579.

• Fair: Scores between 580 and 669.

• Good: Scores between 670 and 739.

Over the length of a standard, 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage, a low interest rate can save borrowers tens of thousands of dollars in interest fees.

In addition to paying more in interest fees, Experian notes that borrowers with subpar credit scores may have to do even more to earn the trust of lenders.

Borrowers whose scores fall into the “Very poor” range may be required to pay a fee or make a deposit when opening a new credit account, and some might not be approved for credit at all.

Borrowers whose scores fall into the “Fair” category may be classified by lenders as subprime borrowers, making it hard for them to open new credit accounts or secure loans without a co-signer.

Many investors like IRAs because they give them a certain measure of choice in regard to their investments while allowing investors to postpone paying taxes on gains until money is withdrawn during retirement.

• Traditional IRA: Traditional IRAs are very popular, according to data from the Investment Company Institute. Classic features include a tax break of up to $6,000 initially, and investment earnings are not taxed as long as the money remains in the account.

• Roth IRA: A Roth IRA is different than a traditional IRA in various ways. Contributions to a Roth IRA are not tax-deductible, but funds will grow tax-free. Also, with a Roth IRA, the taxes are paid upfront, so account holders will not pay taxes when the money is withdrawn. This is benefi-

cial for those who expect their income tax bracket to rise after retirement.

• SEP IRA: This type of IRA is a traditional IRA, but one set up and funded for employees by an employer. SEP stands for simplified employee pension. Employers must contribute equally to all employee accounts, and personal contribution limits are much higher for these accounts than on other tax-favored accounts.

• Spousal IRA: The financial resource The Motley Fool notes that spousal IRAs are either traditional or Roth IRAs funded by a married taxpayer in the name of his or her spouse who has less than $2,000 in annual compensation. The couple must file a joint tax return in the year of the contribution.

• Education IRA (EIRA): Not all IRAs are strictly for retirement funds.

EIRAs help pay for higher education.

No tax deductions are allowed, but deposits and earnings may be withdrawn tax-free so long as they are used to pay for higher education.

IRAs are tax-advantaged tools for setting aside funds for retirement and other needs.

Caregiving is a big responsibility. One crucial role caregivers may take on involves managing a loved one’s finances.

AARP states that acting as a money manager becomes especially important if a loved one begins having trouble keeping a checkbook or becomes confused about money.

The Family Caregiver Alliance indicates millions of Americans are managing money or property for a family member or friend who is unable to pay bills or make financial decisions.

Juggling one’s own finances and the responsibilities of another person’s money can take its toll. Here are several ways to navigate these often tricky waters.

• Discuss plans in advance. Have conversations even before an aging loved one needs caregiving. Talking

through difficult topics when parents are healthy can simplify decisions later on.

• Open a joint account. Joint back accounts make it easier for caregivers to manage loved ones’ money if the person becomes physically or mentally incapacitated.

When necessary, you can step in as a money manager to pay bills, make deposits and withdrawals and monitor account balances.

Juggling one’s own finances and the responsibilities of another person’s money can take its toll.

There are several ways to navigate these often tricky waters.

• Make legal fiduciary changes.

AARP suggests drawing up legal documents to manage all financial accounts. A power of attorney is a legal document in which one person assigns another the power to make financial decisions on their behalf.

BY JOHN SAHLY Shaw Media Illinois The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services Inspector General’s annual report documents the death of 123 children who came into contact with DCFS within 12 months of their death, and begins with a concise message for the state.

“We, Illinois, must do better,” Meryl Paniak, the department’s inspector general states in the report.

“As I submit this report, I am disheartened that many of the problems I identify here have been identified before, both by me and my predecessor. I recently reviewed a 2004 article which addressed the same child welfare issues I highlight in this report,” Paniak writes.

This annual report covers the time period from July 1, 2018, to June 30, 2019. The report, which is given to the governor and the Illinois General Assembly, highlights some of the main issues in child welfare that have lingered for years.

Those issues include: Children killed after DCFS left them with abusive parents or their partners, children taken from their parents to sleep on the floors in DCFS offices, children kept beyond medical necessity in psychiatric hospitals (even earlier, in 1996, a neglect petition was filed against DCFS for leaving children in psych hospitals when they were ready for discharge), lack of foster homes and services for children and families whose first language is not English, and investigators who take shortcuts that lead to tragedy.

Specifically, the report cites the April 2019 death of 5-year-old AJ Freund of Crystal Lake. Freund’s mother, JoAnn Cunningham, pleaded guilty to Freund’s murder. AJ’s father, Andrew Freund, remains in jail awaiting trial.

DCFS has faced heavy criticism for its handling of the Freund case, including a December 2018 contact when AJ Freund had a large bruise on

his hip and later told a doctor it might have been his mother who hit him.

“The death of AJ Freund, like the death of Joseph Wallace which led to the creation of the OIG, is emblematic of DCFS’s failure to look beyond the current crisis to consider the entire history of the family,” the report states, referencing the 1993 death of 3-year-old Joseph Wallace, who was killed by his mentally ill mother who had repeatedly regained custody despite warning signs that she would hurt her son.

“In Wallace, investigators ignored the mother’s long history of physical abuse and profound mental illness.

In Freund, investigators ignored the parents’ long history of addiction, the mother’s recent relapse, and the parents’ isolation of the children from caring relatives and day care providers.”

Of the 123 deaths reviewed by the inspector general, 37 were deemed accidental, 34 were “natural,” 24 were ruled a homicide, seven were suicide and the cause of death in 21 was undetermined.

In the report’s systemic recommendations, the inspector general wrote DCFS should review its practice of requesting law enforcement to take protective custody of children victims of alleged abuse for interviewing purposes.

“Let’s not continue making the same mistakes which led to the deaths of Joseph Wallace, AJ Freund and so many other children in Illinois,” the report states. “Let’s use what we know to decrease the number of unnecessary deaths of Illinois children in the coming year.”

MARIA ‘RENIE’ MILLER SPRING VALLEY — Maria Elana “Renie” (Keen) Miller, 78, of Spring Valley died peacefully Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria.

Renie was born July 5, 1941, in LaSalle to Clara Ozella Doty and Nelson Keen, and graduated from Hopkins High School in Granville. She married Glenn William Miller on Aug. 3, 1962, and they raised five children, sons Fred (Christine) Miller of Madison, Ted Miller of Mark, stepson Bob (Lisa) Miller of Peru, and daughters Jana (Larry) Morales of Miami and Beth (Steve) Brewbaker of McHenry. She had eight grandchildren, Carla Lund, Dana Brewbaker, Leah Brewbaker, Steve Miller, Marc Miller, Ben Miller, Jack Miller and Amelie Morales, and four great-grandchildren, Yarrow and Banyon Miller, and Jaxton and Dallan Lund.

Renie loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, arts and crafts, ceramics, sewing, baking, cooking and her flower garden.

She was a devoted member and taught Sunday school at Abundant Life Fellowship in LaSalle.

She was a Girl Scout leader and coached girls’ softball in Spring Valley and worked for St. Margaret’s Hospital, the Red Cross and Illinois Cement.

She had firm opinions and strong faith, and

As part of a small group of likeminded women, she established and operated a center called Abortion Alternatives, where they provided many resources for women in crisis and families in need in the LaSalle/Peru area.

She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a sister, Janet Pecchio, and a brother, Bob Keen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Doris Russ and Nora Sue Martin; and a brother, Jim Keen.

Visitation was held Monday, Jan. 13, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel, 208 S. McCoy St. in Granville. Services were held Tuesday, Jan. 14, with Pastor Edmond Curry officiating. Additional visitation was held prior to the service.

Burial was in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Granville.

Pallbearers were Steve Brewbaker, Larry Morales, Andy Lund, Alex Urbanski, Jack Kusek and Charlie Russ.

Red was born Dec. 30, 1944, in Streator to Vernon and Ila (Briner) Walter.

Olivero, an administrative law judge, was elected twice and served the college from 2009 to 2019. She was board chairwoman from May 2013 through April 2017.

The coroner’s office said the crash remains under investigation with the Peru Police Department, but police chief Doug Bernabei said Jan. 6 there were “no indications whatsoever” that substances contributed to the crash. “The likely scenario is he did not know the hoist was in

the upright position,” Bernabei said.

First responders administered life-saving efforts to Siemers, who within minutes was transferred to Illinois Valley Community Hospital, Peru. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 5:03 p.m. Jan. 3.

PERU — The Putnam County Educational Foundation (PCEF) recently announced that the 20th annual Betty Bouxsein Bowling Tournament will be Sunday, March 22.

Each team will consist of five bowlers with an entry fee of $180. The first session will begin at 11 a.m., with the second scheduled for 2 p.m. The event returns to Illinois Valley Super Bowl, located at Mahoney Drive in Peru.

Needless to say, this event is a worthy cause in memory of a wonderful

person and great friend and trustee of the PCEF, namely Betty Bouxsein.

Betty’s two sons, Bruce and Daryl Bouxsein, continue to be an integral part of the event and its incredible success.

Free volunteer tutor training at IVCC

OGLESBY — The Adult Education Community Tutoring Program at Illinois Valley Community College will conduct free volunteer tutor training from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Feb. 1 and 8, in Room CTC221.

Participation in both sessions is required. In addition, volunteers must have a desire to work with adult learners and be willing to tutor two-to-three hours each week. Teaching experience is not necessary, however, 10 hours of training through the program is required. Visiting an Adult Education classroom is the additional training component.

Classes follow the IVCC semester schedule in fall and spring. Oneto-one tutoring might be available during summer months. Tutors are needed in DePue, Mendota, Oglesby, Ottawa and Streator.

ADAM AND IDA DECK COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP HENNEPIN VOCATIONAL GRANT KENNEY GRANT The Village of Hennepin would like to remind Putnam County graduating Seniors that the deadline is fast approaching to apply for the Adam and Ida Deck College Scholarship. The scholarships will be subsidized through proceeds realized from the Adam and Ida Deck Scholarship Fund. First place recipient will receive four consecutive yearly payments of $1200, and the Second place recipient will receive $1000 per year.

These scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic ability.

The Hennepin Vocational Grant provides for a grant of $1200 for first place, $1000 for second place and $800 for third place. This Grant is also subsidized through the Adam and Ida Deck Scholarship Fund.

These grants are for one year only.

Applicants for the above awards must live in Hennepin Township.

Deadline for application submission is February 15th.

In addition, Kenney grants are also available with a one-time award of $500. This Grant is subsidized through proceeds realized from the Harold and Julia Kenney Education Fund. No limit of recipients.

Applications must be received no later than 90 days after the student begins their first year of study beyond High School. For the Kenney grant, applicants must reside in the Village of Hennepin.

Curious George takes Rotary Center Stage MAGNOLIA — The curious story behind the story of Curious George was shared by Rotarian Adriane Shore at the club’s Dec. 12 meeting at LJ’s Café in Magnolia.

A retired preschool special education teacher, Shore recalled her own memories of growing up with Curious George books, and how it led her to eventually begin collecting Curious George memorabilia. That collection now includes books, toys, clothes, blankets, puzzles — and so much more that now fills display cabinets and much of the Shores’ basement.

Along the way, Shore also learned of the incredible story of Curious George’s creators, Hans and Margret Rey, German Jews who, in 1940, were living in Paris. Still in Paris at the time of the Nazi occupation of the city at the outset of World War II, they escaped on bicycles, just ahead of the approaching German army, with the first manuscript of Curious George in the front bicycle basket. They made their way south to Portugal, finding

passage to Brazil and finally to New York, where they continued to write children’s books. They eventually settled in Cambridge, Mass.

The first story published in 1939 was Cecily G and the Nine Monkeys.

Their next work spotlighted the smallest, most mischievous of those nine monkeys. That little monkey was first called Fifi but later named Curious George, with a penchant for getting himself into and out of trouble in nearly every imaginable situation ever since.

PAC announces 2020 season PRINCETON — Comedy will be king in 2020 in another season of community theater sponsored by the Prairie Arts Council, featuring three comedies in addition to its annual children’s musical.

The PAC’s 2020 season will start off with a return to Tuna, Texas.

“Tuna Does Vegas” by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard is a sequel to last season’s “Greater Tuna.” The fun begins when radio host Arles Struvie announced on air that he and his wife, Bertha, are renewing their wedding vows in Vegas. The two-man cast portrays all of the inhabitants of Tuna — men, women, as well as Vegas showgirls, Elvis impersonators and more! “Tuna Does Vegas” will be performed Feb. 21-23 and will be directed by Dixie Schroeder.

The spring offering will be “Leaving Iowa” by Tim Clue and Spike Manton. “Leaving Iowa” is a tribute to the great-American family road trip. In this family-friendly comedy, Don Browning, a middle-aged writer, returns home to fulfill his father’s wishes to return his ashes to his childhood home. His adventures along the way will resonate

with anyone who has ever taken a road trip and revisited memories of their youth. Director Dave Roden will be looking for three men and three women to cast for the April 24-26 show.

Next up is “Delval Divas” by Barbara Pease Weber. “Divas” will be presented Aug. 21-23 and will be directed by Ellen Marincic. “Divas” features a cast of six women and tells the story of four educated, successful, professional women who share the same address — the Delaware Valley Federal Correctional Facility, a low-level security prison for white- and “pink”-collar criminals.

The season will conclude with the annual children’s holiday musical.

The show and dates of the children’s show will be announced at a later date.

Persons interested in participating in the theater program are encouraged to watch the PAC website, prairiearts.org, for audition dates and information on each show. Volunteers are always welcome for all parts of the productions. Prairie Arts Council programming is funded in part by grants from the Illinois Arts Council and Church Women United.

Stage 212 announces cast for upcoming ‘Nunsensations! The Nunsense Vegas Revue’

LASALLE — Stage 212’s winter 2020 production takes the sisters on a brand new adventure in Dan Goggin’s “Nunsensations!

The Nunsense Vegas Revue.”

When a parishioner volunteers to donate $10,000 to the sisters’ school if they will perform in a club in Las Vegas, Mother Superior is hesitant to accept. However, after being convinced by the other sisters that “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas,” Reverend Mother agrees. What follows is the most feather-filled, sequin-studded, fan dancing Nunsense show ever. Performing in “The Pump Room” at the Mystique Motor Lodge, the sisters experience “show-biz” like never before.

Featured in the cast are Jane Knapp as Sister Mary Regina, Mary Ann Thompson as Sister Mary Hubert, Lori Christopherson as Sister Robert Anne, Jessica Kreiser as Sister Mary Paul and Debbi Torri as Sister Mary Leo. Hall rallies to top Lady Panthers in OT

BY KEVIN CHLUM Shaw Media SPRING VALLEY — There have been times this year the Hall girls basketball team fell behind and didn’t show much fight.

That wasn’t the case Jan. 11.

The Lady Devils fell behind by 12 points late in the third quarter against Putnam County, but Hall put on a full-court press that sparked it to a 38-33 overtime victory in a non-conference game in Spring Valley.

After a jumper by Sophia Harris and a 3-pointer by Caitlyn Cioni put the Lady Panthers ahead 27-15 with 1:29 left in the third, Hall coach T.J. Orlandi called a timeout and the Lady Devils came out with a press.

Jaclyn Cinotte hit a pair of free throws after the timeout, Hall forced a turnover that led to a Cinotte 3-pointer, and Cinotte swiped a steal that led to a pair of free throws by Hanah Hart to close Hall’s deficit to 27-22 entering the fourth quarter.

“At first, it wasn’t too great. We were a little sloppy,” Cinotte said.

“But toward the end, we got it together, executed our stuff and had strong defense.”

Molly Boyd scored on an inbounds play to put PC ahead 31-29 with 2:36 left, and Hart drove for a basket with 58 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

Cattani drained a 3-pointer with 3:07 left in OT to put Hall up 34-33, and Cinotte closed out the win by hitting 4-of-4 free throws in the final 1:25.

“Obviously, it’s a tough one,” PC coach Jared Sale said. “We let it slip through the cracks. We had a 12-point lead with 1:30 left in the third quarter. We pretty much dominated the first 18 minutes. In the second half they outrebounded us by 14. That’s an effort thing.

“When they started to make a run, we didn’t handle the pressure well.

We hung our heads just a little bit.

We stopped rebounding. They had second- and third-chance opportunities and got themselves to the line. That kills.”

The Lady Devils, who typically play a 2-3 zone, forced seven turnovers and held PC to just six points in the final 13:29 using the press.

Sale said the Lady Panthers haven’t seen much pressure recently.

“We haven’t seen it since the night we played Mendota at St. Bede,” Sale said. “It’s something that early

I think that was a little bit of it. Once they started to see they had an opportunity out of it, they picked it up a little bit and we started to crawl up into our shell.”

Kinzinger after closed-door briefing: ‘This was the right move’ Congressman defends strike on Iranian general

“This was the right move to save American lives on an imminent basis, and they did the right thing,” Kinzinger, R-Channahon, said on a Fox News program later that day.

The U.S. and Iran stepped back from possible war Jan. 8 as Trump signaled he would not retaliate militarily for Iran’s missile strikes on Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops. No one was injured in the strikes, but U.S. forces in the region remained on high alert, according to the Associated Press.

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger said he is convinced more than ever after sitting in on a closed-door briefing on the Iran situation Jan. 8 that President Donald Trump’s administration was justified in killing Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani.

While Democrats and some Republicans expressed dissatisfaction with the administration’s justifications for the drone strike on Soleimani — including Republican Sen. Mike Lee, of Utah, who said it was “probably the worst briefing I’ve seen, at least on a military issue, in the nine years I’ve served in the United States Senate” — Kinzinger, a member of the House’s Foreign Affairs Committee, was not one of them.

Kinzinger said the opposite.

“In the 10 years of being here,

that was the most revealing classified brief we’ve had in a large setting like that in terms of what they revealed,” Kinzinger said on Fox News. “What’s amazing to me, actually one of my biggest annoyances, is as the Democrats came up to talk about it, they just couldn’t take yes or no, whatever it is for an answer, because I think they’ve invested in their position on this strike before even knowing the intelligence, and therefore, could not be convinced.”
