Tyler Towne can’t say that: He’s the one who drives the giant nut around.

The Planters NUTmobile will be seen in and around Starved Rock Country from Jan. 15-25 — stops include Hy-Vee, the Illinois Valley YMCA and Peru’s skating rink — and anyone who meets the Planters crew might also recognize a 23-yearold graduate from LaSalle-Peru High School and Illinois Valley Community College.

“It’s a full-time, one-year position where we travel the country,” said Towne, who’s spent the past six months driving through 17 cities, mostly out West. “The goal is to make people smile.

“It’s a blessing and honor, and I wake up glad to be part of this program every single day.”

Towne graduated from L-P in 2016 and got his associate degree from IVCC two years later before finishing a communications degree in May from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A few months before graduation, a recruiter visited campus looking for people to drive the NUTmobile and the Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile, both overseen by the same unit, and to interact with the public.

That sounded like fun to Towne,

who applied despite steep odds: 7,000 applicants for 21 spots. He made the cut and spent two weeks training in Wisconsin, the site of a test course for learning to steer the fleet of six wiener mobiles and three NUTmobiles. (Towne does not drive any Oscar Mayer vehicles.)

“To put it frankly, driving it was nuts,” he quipped, pun fully intended. “There was a little anxiety to it, but it’s really become second nature.”

The training team told him and his peers that their job “revolves around making magic and selling nuts.” He chuckled at that, but reconsidered after setting off for Kansas City, the first stop in a 17-city tour.

The mere sight of the NUTmobile naturally attracted media coverage and delightful exchanges with perfect strangers. The word “magic,” he decided, captured the experience well.

Magic may help explain why nobody on his team got sick. COVID19 was surging as they hit the road, so they set off with masks, hand sanitizer and hopes that nobody would get sick nor pass it along.

“Not one of the 21 of us has had so much [as] a sniffle,” Towne said.

“It’s nearly miraculous that 21 of us travel the country and haven’t had it, but it speaks to how cautious we’ve been — and how we can make people smile without causing a public health outbreak.”

In his first six-month hitch, he toured South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and California before breaking for the holidays. He grew so accustomed to driving the lumbering NUTmobile that when

he returned home for Thanksgiving, he was briefly unsettled pulling his own Chrysler 2000 out of the driveway.

Next, Towne will take the NUTmobile around town — he asked Shaw Media not to publish a complete itinerary to prevent crowds and COVID19 infection — before making his way east of the Mississippi.

One of his college instructors said she wasn’t at all surprised that Towne caught the recruiter’s eye.

IVCC journalism professor Lori Cinotte said Towne has the perfect skill set for conducting a promotional tour. As a student, Cinotte recalled, Towne helped get the sports network going and putting together live video feeds.

“He really works well with people and will work for a way to get things done,” Cinotte said. “Tyler is extremely outgoing, and he’s able to make things happen. He enjoys making things happen.”

After the NUTmobile finishes up in LaSalle-Peru, Towne and his comrades will head south of Champaign and then to Columbus, Ohio, in hopes of recruiting a few Big 10 graduates to apply for the next NUTmobile tour.

His tour wraps up in June with stops in Syracuse, New York, and Boston, after which he’ll be looking for work. He hopes to catch on with the White Sox organization, where he spent a summer working in the club’s social media lounge.

Until then, he’s having fun and telling friends to watch for the NUTmobile, posting on his social media page, “Hope to ‘cashew’ soon on the ‘salty’ streets of the Illinois Valley.”

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s agriculture program is offering an introductory course in its cannabis production certificate starting Jan. 15.

The class will meet live online from 10 to 10:50 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday with instructor Kathryn Seebruck.

The course will cover cannabis production, anatomy and physiology of the plant, hemp and marijuana production methods and the various uses for hemp and marijuana. Legal issues and economics also will be covered in the course, along with professional opportunities within the industry. The two-semester cannabis certificate started in August 2020. The Putnam County Public Library will host a Zoom presentation from historian Jim Gibbons discussing Charles M. Schulz, the creator of Peanuts.

The Zoom event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, and the link for viewing will be available on the library’s website and Facebook page.

Schulz, nicknamed “Sparky,” was the genius cartoonist famously known for the creation of the “Peanuts” comic strips.

Schulz brought the beloved characters of Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy and the rest of the gang to life and into the hearts and homes of Americans everywhere.

Gibbons will discuss the life of Schulz and his contribution to classic American culture.

Even after his death in 2000, Schulz’s legacy continues to live on, as two Apollo 10 models were named “Snoopy” and “Charlie Brown,” and a museum located two blocks from his studio was constructed in his honor.

Schulz was honored twice by Forbes magazine as being the third- and later sixth-highest-earning deceased celebrity of all time.

In 2007, Schulz was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame and received many prestigious awards including the Congres-

St. Bede senior Ben Johll organized construction of a dog agility course BRIAN HOXSEY bhoxsey@shawmedia.com GRANVILLE — Since 1912, the Eagle Scout rank in the Boy Scouts has represented a milestone of accomplishment — perhaps without equal — that is recognized across the country and even the world.

Those who have earned the Eagle Scout rank count it among their most treasured achievements.

St. Bede senior Ben Johll, after completing his Eagle Scout Project back in November, and with just a little bit of paperwork left to finish, will join the 4% of Boy Scouts that have earned the rank of Eagle Scout.

“It was a sense of relief to see the project finished, but also I was most happy that everything turned out exactly as I had planned and it was done right,” said Johll, who led a project that built and installed a dog agility course at Pet Project in Marseilles and is a member of Troop 1055 based out of Cherry.

The course is made up of eight different obstacles: tunnel, hurdle,

pause table, weave poles, see-saw, elevated walk, an A-frame and a hoop jump.

Pet Project was established in 1993 to fill a need for stray animals in La Salle County. There is no county pound, so as volunteers they work to help find homes for animals who have no other chance. To date, the organization has rescued nearly 6,000 animals.

“I had a few ideas — one being the agility course — of what I wanted to do already when I reached out to Pet Project and after getting our dog from them I knew they were who I wanted to work with,” said Ben, who started with the troop when the family lived in Spring Valley, but have since moved to Granville. “They decided with winter coming it was going to be harder to get the dogs the walking and exercising they need, so having an agility course right there would be beneficial for the dogs and the caregivers.”

The process took between three to four months from start to finish.

“The scouts are in charge of picking a project that will benefit a not for profit organization, then show leadership in executing that project from beginning to end,” said Troop

Ben has been a senior patrol leader for the past few years, and in March when he turns 18-years-old and phases out of the Boy Scouts, will become an adult leader in the troop. He said he will continue to work towards earning Eagle Palms, which are awarded for completing additional tenure, leadership, and merit badge requirements.

“The opportunities he has had through personal growth in scouting have been tremendous,” Mark said. “Watching him grow from an 11-year-old joining the troop, to becoming a leader in the troop, to working on this project has been amazing to see. Black Caucus introduces sweeping police legislation, faces opposition from law enforcement

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Legislative Black Caucus has introduced a sweeping criminal justice omnibus bill that aims to heavily alter the state of policing in Illinois.

Sen. Elgie Sims, D-Chicago, introduced a 611-page amendment to House Bill 163 Tuesday in the state Senate, a move that would allow the bill to move during the General Assembly’s upcoming lame duck session scheduled from Jan. 8 to Jan. 13.

While the bill has been introduced on short notice, it is the result of

over 100 hours of hearings held by the Black Caucus over fall and winter months as part of their legislative agenda “to end systemic racism in Illinois.” Criminal justice reform and police accountability made up the first of four pillars in that agenda.

The bill has seen intense pushback from Republican lawmakers and groups representing law enforcement. The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police called it “the worst thing to happen to our profession” and “the end of the law enforcement profession as we know it” in a statement released Tuesday.

In a Wednesday notice, the Chica-

go Fraternal Order of Police wrote “it might as well be a crime to be a law enforcement officer in Illinois.”

State Rep. David Allen Welter, R-Morris, and state Sen. John Curran, R-Lemont, both released statements opposing HB163, with Welter calling it anti-police.

In response, the Senate Black Caucus distributed their own release Wednesday, saying “From our perspective, our communities know what they need in order to be kept safe. We come from the communities we represent. Our experiences, combined with our understanding of policy, have shaped our legislative approach, and they cannot be dis-

missed when it comes to determining what our communities need.”

The legislation has also received support from criminal justice reform groups such as the Illinois Justice Project and the Building a Safe Illinois Coalition.

HB163 contains several articles that would stand as their own new laws while also amending key components of state law already on the books. While most of the legislation pertains to law enforcement, there are sections devoted to altering other aspects of the criminal justice system, such as pre-trial detention, sentencing laws and prison diversion.

Riots in Congress bring state Capitol security concerns into focus Gov. calls for heightened security as lawmakers return to Springfield

BY SARAH MANSUR Capitol News Illinois SPRINGFIELD — Just two days after hundreds of rioters broke through police barricades and vandalized the halls of Congress, Illinois lawmakers returned to the seat of government for a lame duck session.

The security presence at the Capitol, where the state Senate convened, and the Bank of Springfield Center, where the House of Representatives met, came under renewed focus.

The Illinois State Police increased security around the state Capitol and the Bank of Springfield Center, at Gov. JB Pritzker’s request, and coordinated efforts with the Secretary of State police and the Springfield Police Department, an ISP spokesperson wrote in an emailed statement Thursday.

“The ISP will have all resources at its disposal to assure the safety of the participants and protect the integrity of the session. To ensure security, we cannot discuss protocols or manpower associated with this effort,” the ISP spokesperson wrote.

In a statement Wednesday evening calling for President Donald Trump’s impeachment, Pritzker said he asked for the Illinois State Police and other law enforcement to “redeploy to heighten their presence at govern-

ment buildings and the Capitol in Springfield.”

The governor’s statement Wednesday came as a much smaller group of demonstrators gathered outside the Illinois Capitol to protest the election certification of President-elect Joe Biden.

There were no arrests or incidents reported at the Illinois protest, according to Henry Haupt, a spokesperson for the Illinois Secretary of State, who estimated it was attended by 40 to 50 people.

The Secretary of State Capitol Police force is assigned to the nine buildings comprising the State Capitol Complex. Security at the Bank of Springfield Center falls under the purview of the Illinois State Police, said Haupt.

Steve Brown, spokesperson for House Speaker Michael Madigan, declined to comment on security procedures at the Bank of Springfield or discussions among House leadership for additional security.

“I think there is adequate security, as there was in May (during the last legislative session),” Brown said on Thursday. “If you remember, visualizing the scene, (security) was pretty comprehensive from what could be seen, and there were additional layers, not necessarily visible to the general public.”

John Patterson, spokesperson for Senate President Don Harmon, said in an email that there are ongoing conversations with the Secretary of State’s Office to address any questions or concerns and reassure every

Haupt said he couldn’t comment on staffing levels or security protocols at the Capitol Complex but said the Secretary of State Capitol Police are working with the Illinois State Police and other law enforcement entities to ensure the Complex and surrounding area remains safe.

“Although the Capitol building is closed due to the pandemic, I think it’s important to highlight that the entry points are nonetheless manned by the Capitol Police,” he said.

Every entry point at the Capitol Complex is staffed with at least one armed Capitol Police officer, Haupt said.

“But the point the Capitol Police

has made to me numerous times is, we’re going to be vigilant even in quiet times because you can’t anticipate something. So you have to be vigilant and on alert,” he said.

The Secretary of State Capitol Police was established by the Illinois General Assembly after a gunman fatally shot state Capitol security guard Bill Wozniak in September 2004.

When the shooting took place, the General Assembly was not in session.

“They’ve been great support for us in the past,” Nadeau said. “When I first started with VAC about two and a half years ago, they had given us a very nice donation.”

Corteva Administrative Assistant Lynn Borio submitted a donation request in the fall to help provide services to seniors and individuals with disabilities through the Meals on Wheels Program.

Borio has submitted the request each of the past few years to provide any assistance to the organization that is made available. The request was reviewed based on the amount requested, organization, program or

project and overall budget.

Corteva continually makes contributions to community-based organizations on behalf of the company and employees. Consideration for outreach grants is given to communities where Corteva employees live and work and that support quality of life initiatives to help create an improved, sustainable lifestyle for people worldwide.

Chief Operating Officer Mike Neuenkirchen thanked Corteva for its continued support to help those in need in the community.

“Corteva’s gift is extremely appreciated, especially now,” Neuenkirchen said. “Since the beginning of the COVID pandemic, we have seen our demand for Meals on Wheels services nearly double at a time when federal COVID assistance funds have nearly run out.”

In the LaSalle, Putnam and Bureau county program, the VAC currently serves home delivered Meals on Wheels to 531 individuals in the community.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the VAC has had to consolidate resources while increasing the amount of individuals they serve.

MARY C. SONDGEROTH Born: January 5, 1953; Pontiac Died: January 4, 2021; Princeton PRINCETON — Mary C. Sondgeroth, 67, of Princeton, Illinois, passed away Monday, January 4, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born January 5, 1953, in Pontiac, Illinois, the daughter of Marguerite Kidd.

Mary married Vernon Sondgeroth on November 11, 1972, at Peterstown Church, Mendota, Illinois. He survives in Princeton.

Also surviving are four children, Lisa (Jeff) Fultz of Ohio, Illinois, Lori Sondgeroth of Princeton, Ryan Sondgeroth of Princeton and Gina (Victor) DaCosta of Palm Coast, Florida; six grandchildren, Kayla Griffin, Dustin Fultz, Zachary Tuft, Wyatt Fultz, Savanna DaCosta and Vanessa DaCosta; two greatgrandchildren, Bennett Mathesius and Autumn Smith; her great-aunt, Dorothy Wallace of Troy Grove, Illinois; many sisters-in law, brothers-in law, and many very special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother; her stepfather, Vincent Lyons; and two brothers: David Lyons and Dale Kidd.

Mary graduated from Mendota High School.

She worked at Prairie View Nursing Home for six years. Mary worked at Sullivan’s Foods for 31 years and loved her customers.

Mary loved her grandkids and great-grandkids. She

loved to travel and take pictures to keep memories.

Mary was very kind and enjoyed helping and giving to other people.

A memorial service was held Saturday, January 9, 2021, at Grant-Johnson Funeral Home, Princeton. Burial will take place in Troy Grove, Illinois, at a later date.

Charles was born on January 11, 1924, in Lovington, IL, to Bernard and Elsie (Diding) Doyle. They moved to Standard when Chuck was 4 years old, which was his mom’s hometown. He married his best friend, Barbara Jean “Jeanie” Kallner, on May 28, 1983.

Chuck worked at M & H Zinc Company. He worked construction and was the foreman on the I-80 Bridge.

He also worked construction developing the J & L Steel plant in Hennepin. Chuck worked at Western Sand & Gravel as a heavy machine operator. His last job was working as the caretaker at Walter Duncan Residence in LaSalle, where he worked for over 40 years.

He was a member of the Putnam County Historical Society.

Chuck was an avid Bocce Ball player and follower.

He played in many bocce ball tournaments and in 1996 won the tournament in Springfield. He also received a gold medal for first place in the amateur boxing competition.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jean Doyle of Standard; two sons, Randy Gielow of Peru and Ken (Mischelle) Gielow of Magnolia; one daughter, Lynn (Rick) Camatti of Standard; one sister-in-law, Elaine Klimek of Brookfield, Wis.; and two grandsons, Kyle and Ryan Camatti, which he enjoyed teaching them many life skills, including digging, concrete work and teaching them how to drive a vehicle. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, and his dog and best friend, Susie.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Bernard Doyle, James Doyle, Donald Doyle and Richard Doyle; four sisters, Betty Koehler, Dorothy Camatti, Beverly “Boo” Camatti and Grace Doyle; and one sister-in-law, Jacqueline Johns.

Janet graduated from Fenton High School in Bensenville, IL in 1961 and married her high school sweetheart, Edwin L. Goode Jr., on June 2, 1962.

She enjoyed traveling with her loving husband and saw many states and countries throughout her lifetime.

They were inseparable high school sweethearts and showed everyone what love was really about.

In her youth, Janet was an excellent ice skater and pianist. Later she became a master gardener and professional volunteer where she was always active in her community. From a township official trustee for Campton Hills in St. Charles, to an election judge for Putnam County, Janet always served others. She was a religious educator for over 25 years as well as an active member of the St. Patrick church in Hennepin, IL. Janet was also an active member of the Appaloosa Horse Association and Wasco Girls Softball league. She was a loving Girl Scout troop leader who would always take on any adventure, even braving a bat cave to give her girls the true camping experience. Janet was the biggest cheerleader when it

HENRY — Chief Senachwine Chapter members have received word of awards received from the Illinois State Organization and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution for their community and area activities in 2019. Usually, awards are announced at the spring conference, but due to COVID and meeting postponements, the distribution of awards was delayed.

The following 11 Illinois Committee awards were announced by the committee chairs: Outstanding Achievement in American Heritage; American Indians report; Excellence in Promoting American History; “Our Patriot Minutes” from the America 250 Committee; Chapter Achievement Award, Level One; Constitution Week “Best in Newspaper Articles”; New Family Reading Night and Literacy Promotion Activities; Outstanding News Coverage from the Membership Committee; Outstanding National Defense programs and Veterans Day Presentation; Excellence in Historical

Efforts; and Outstanding Press Coverage from the Media Committee.

Special recognition awards were received for “Most articles sent for the state regent’s press book” and for the Historic Preservation Committee’s recognition of the chapter’s cleaning of the gravestone of “Real DAR Daughter” Clarissa McManners and re-dedication ceremony.

From the National Society came three membership awards — “Zero Member Resignations/Drops,” achieving the “Luminary Challenge” and achieving “10% or Higher Net Member Increase.” The chapter was also honored for “Outstanding Patriot Recognition - Honoring Our Patriots” and again for “Chapter Achievement Award Level I, 2019.”

The IHSA adjusted its sports seasons from three to four last summer when the IDPH initially assigned risk levels to each sport: fall (Aug. 10 to Oct. 24), winter (Nov. 16 to Feb. 13), spring (Feb. 16 to May 1) and summer (May 3 to June 26).

The fall season had boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, girls tennis and girls swimming, all listed as low risk. But spikes in COVID-19 numbers in November delayed the start of any winter sports, which still have not yet started.

“We appreciate the dialogue with

leadership they believe sports can be played in a manner which is safe to participants.

“We believe there is both data and science that validates the idea that we can safely conduct sports,” Anderson said.

“We have seen it work in other states and believe it can in Illinois if we utilize mitigations provided by IDPH and the IHSA’s SMAC. Students are already leaving or participating out-of-state on weekends. We believe that competing for their high school remains the safest venue for participation.”

Wrestling, a high-risk sport, already was moved from winter to the summer season. The low-risk winter sports – bowling, girls gymnastics, boys swimming, cheerleading and competitive dance – are waiting for their start.

Girls badminton was moved from the

spring to winter and also is waiting.

Boys and girls basketball, listed as a high-risk sport, would not have been allowed to compete yet under IDPH guidelines. At this point, time for a winter season is running short.

“Our board of directors is going to have difficult decisions to make regarding the seasons for medium- and highrisk sports very soon,” Anderson said.

“With no specific IDPH timeline or statistical benchmarks established for the return of sports, and the calendar shrinking, putting together a puzzle that allows for all sports to be played becomes increasingly improbable. We continue to urge all residents of our state to be diligent in their efforts to adhere to safety guidelines, as a lower positivity rate remains the key to athletics returning.”

Main Street smokehouse creates pork heaven How would you craft the perfect pulled pork sandwich?

Obviously, it has to have sweet barbecue sauce.

Bacon, sure.

And loads of macaroni and cheese to top it off, why not?

I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into when I ordered Main Street Creamery & Smokehouse’s new piggymac sandwich, but it all sounded great.

After eating it, I’m starting to think it’s the perfect pulled pork combination. And I’ve been getting my macaroni and cheese on the side all these years.

The $8 sandwich features the restaurant’s signature pulled pork with Veterans Q barbecue sauce. Along with a few slices of bacon, the macaroni and cheese is packed on the sandwich to overflowing off the sides, so you’ll need your fork to eat what falls out. The sandwich comes on a nice bun.

Not only was the Veterans Q barbecue sauce the perfect sweet complement to the pork, but Veterans Q is a veterans-owned company, according to the menu. They donate 100% of their profits to local and national military veteran organizations and groups. This is a fitting sauce to feature in Marseilles, because of the city’s dedication to veterans reflected in the Middle East Conflicts Wall along the Illinois River.

The sandwich also is served with your choice of a side between baked beans, slaw, penne mac, potato salad, bacon ranch salad, broccoli and cauliflower salad, or mac and cheese. I opted for the baked beans, which were pretty good.

I also ordered the soup of the day: the chili. The chili had big chunks of seasoned hamburger, which were my favorite part. It had a little bit of spicy kick to it, but not too much, for those who don’t like their chili too spicy. It was good middle ground.

I was too full for dessert, and that’s a shame, because the creamery is half of the restaurant’s name.

The creamery runs the gamut on ice cream treats: from sundaes to floats or

hand-dipped milkshakes – mostly made from a selection of several flavors of handdipped ice cream. They also serve twisters (the equivalent of a Dairy Queen Blizzard) and smoothies.

Located in downtown Marseilles, Main Street Creamery & Smokehouse is a good place if you’re hankering for some

barbecue, grabbing a lunch, or looking for something better than fast food but are not in the mood for a sit-down restaurant. Plus the whole ice cream end speaks for itself as far as enticement.

Main Street Creamery & Smokehouse delivers to Marseilles, Seneca and Ottawa; and you can go there for

carryout, or eat outdoors if you can catch a nice day.

Virtual scholarship workshop set for Jan. 26

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s admissions office will host a virtual scholarship workshop at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26.

The free session will cover the 2021-22 IVCC Foundation scholarship application, essay guidelines, and common grammar and punctuation mistakes. Former recipients will share advice and offer feedback.

Assistant Director of Admissions, Records and Transfer Services Aseret Loveland said, “The Foundation scholarship application is fully

online and with the Feb. 11 deadline approaching, we wanted to offer our students an online session to learn how to make their essay stand out.

“Over 400 applications were submitted last year and 331 students were awarded scholarships. We hope this workshop will help students refine their essay to increase the odds of receiving an award,” she added.

Awards range from $500 to $4,500.
