Gomez named administrator of multicounty health agency Interim chief is no longer interim PRINCETON — Hector Gomez of Princeton has been named administrator of the Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments.

Gomez had been serving in the role of interim administrator for three months prior to his appointment. He was selected from a group of more than 30 applicants locally and across the state by a committee of members of the Boards of Health of Bureau, Putnam and Marshall counties.

Gomez has been fiscal director and assistant administrator of the Bureau County Health Department for more than 12 years. In that role, he served not only Bureau County but also Putnam and Marshall counties, working closely with each office’s staff and all three boards of health.

Gomez has been responsible for

the fiscal operations for the three county health departments and oversight of the grant programs as the fiscal agent. In addition to his experience in public health, Gomez has been active in his community, serving as a police and fire commissioner for

the city of Princeton and as a director of the Flags of Freedom organization. He also serves as an honor guard volunteer at funerals and ceremonies in the Princeton area.

Gomez is senior vice-commander of the Roger L. Eickmeier American Legion Post 125 and quartermaster of Princeton Post VFW 4323. He has served in the United States Marine Corps, active U.S. Army and the Illinois National Guard. While in the National Guard, he served a oneyear deployment in Iraq.

“I would like to thank the search committee and the boards of health for their confidence in me and for this opportunity,” Gomez said. “I look forward to addressing the public health needs of our counties with our talented and dedicated staff working together under the guidance of our boards of health.”

Gomez lives in Princeton with his wife, Peggy. They have two children, Hector, a junior at Northwestern University, and Margarita, a freshman at University of Illinois at Chicago.

New laws impact ag, animals, hunting PCR NEWS STAFF news@putnamcountyrecord.com The following is the second part in a review of notable new state laws taking effect on Jan. 1, 2019.

Dairy Farm Inspection Reports: Requires DPH (or the local public-health inspector) to provide a paper copy of the inspection report to a dairy farm being inspected at the time of the inspection.

Animal Control Facilities and Shelters: Adds new license-renewal requirements for animal control facilities and animal shelters, including breakdowns of incoming animals (stray, left by owner, etc.) and the ultimate disposition of those animals (adopted, euthanized, etc.) in the previous calendar year.

Department of Agriculture must post this intake and outcome statistics on their website for each facility.

Urban Agriculture Zones: Allows municipalities to create urban agriculture zones and offer tax incentives to businesses associated with

qualified agricultural products.

Municipalities would also be allowed to authorize local utilities to offer wholesale or reduced rates for businesses in urban agriculture zones.

Animal Protection: Provides that nothing prevents a law enforcement officer from taking temporary custody of an animal that is being put in danger due to extreme heat or cold conditions; however, the officer must attempt to make contact with owner.

Also, the owner is responsible of cost required for veterinary care.

Reckless Dog Owner Penalties: Sets penalties for those found to be reckless dog owners and allows courts to confiscate dogs from those owners for periods ranging from 12 to 36 months for the first violation. Sets fines for each animal found in their care they refuse to relinquish.

Youth Resident Archery Deer Permits: Provides that the fees for youth resident archery deer permits shall be the same for non-resident youth permits; allows non-resident youths

to apply for youth hunting and trapping licenses.

Youth Hunting and Trapping License: Combines the youth hunting and trapping licenses to make administering the act simpler for the Department of Natural Resources and easier for the public to understand.

Blaze Pink: Provides that hunters may wear blaze pink during firearm deer season and upland game season.

Cat/Dog Breeder Classification: Provides that those persons who have in their possession five female cats or dogs capable of reproduction will be classified as a dog breeder or cat breeder, rather than a kennel operator. This is an attempt to clarify the definitions to reflect current industry practices and reduce confusion for both licensees and consumers, as these facilities are currently grouped together despite being distinctly different types of operations.

Weighing 5 pounds, 5 ounces and measuring 18.5 inches in length, Alfredo Canchola was welcomed into this world at 11:06 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1. He is the son of Liliana Soto and Jose Alfredo Canchola of LaSalle. He was delivered by Dr. Craig Whatcott of St. Margaret’s Women’s Health Center.

First 2019 Illinois Valley Community Hospital baby arrives on Jan. 2 The first baby of 2019 to be born at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru arrived Wednesday, Jan. 2, when Cindy Hernandez of LaSalle gave birth to a boy at 9:21 p.m.

Jesus Lopez Jr. entered the world weighing 8 pounds, 7 ounces and measuring 19 1/2 inches in length. The child is the first for Hernandez and her partner, Jesus Lopez. Dr. Glenn Helwig delivered the baby. The last baby of 2018 to be born at IVCH was a girl born Dec. 31 to Lyneatte Elmore of LaSalle. There were 361 births at IVCH in 2018.

OGLESBY — T.J. Templeton, vice president and commercial lender for Hometown National Bank in LaSalle, has been elected to the board of directors of the North Central Illinois Economic Development Corp.

(NCI).

Templeton joins 12 oth e r board members who T.J. direct the indus- Templeton trial development marketing program for the region of Bureau, LaSalle and Putnam counties.

In only two years, NCI has marketed the region and secured an 800 percent increase in industrial inquiries. Steve Aubry, vice president of CIT Trucks, is chairman of the board.

A graduate of Illinois State University and IVCC, Templeton has been a lifelong resident of North Central Illinois, and has been a commercial banker since October 2011 with First Federal Savings Bank and currently Hometown National Bank. He is an avid golfer, active civic leader, and also serves as president of the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce.

“I am very excited to be joining a board full of area leaders and decision-makers,” said Templeton. “I know that the North Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation can really make a difference in the lives of everybody living in the region.”

More than 250 business and elected leaders are voting supporters of the North Central Illinois Economic Development Corp.

“We are proud that T.J. is joining our board as we continue to market the region to secure more investment and jobs,” Aubry said.

HEADLINERS OF 2018

SHAW MEDIA A panel of 10 Shaw Media newspaper editors selected the mass shootings that pockmarked 2018 as the No. 1 story of the year.

Dozens of innocent lives were lost in high-profile incidents. A 17-yearold student armed with his father’s pistol and shotgun killed 10 people at Santa Fe High School in Texas on May 18. A 38-year-old man killed five people at the offices of the The Capital newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland, on June 28. A 46-year-old man murdered 11 at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Oct. 27.

A Marine combat veteran killed 12 people – and himself – at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California, on Nov. 7.

But worst of all was a Feb. 14 attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in which a former student armed with an AR-15 rifle killed 17 students and teachers, making it the deadliest shooting at a high school in U.S. history.

That incident led to widespread outrage. Students at schools across Illinois and the rest of the country staged walkouts and protests calling for greater security for themselves and their fellow students. Survivors of the Parkland tragedy and others staged a “March for our Lives” rally in Washington, D.C., with many calling for tougher gun control measures and other provisions to keep students safe.

2. Brett Kavanaugh confirmation fight. Kavanaugh, a judge from the U.S.10th Circuit Court of Appeals, looked ticketed for an easy confirmation as the nation’s newest Supreme Court Justice until allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced. Christine Blasey Ford, a psychology professor at Palo Alto (California) University, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee that Kavanaugh and a friend had assaulted her after a party in 1982, when they were in high school. Kavanaugh adamantly denied the allegations in his own testimony. While some saw the incident as another example of privileged men getting away with bad behavior, others saw a calculated attempt at character assassination.

After a one-week delay to allow for a renewed FBI investigation, the Senate confirmed Kavanaugh’s nomination by a 50-48 vote that broke along party lines, with Republicans carrying the day.

3. Record natural disasters. The Camp Fire in northern California’s Butte County was the deadliest wildfire in 100 years, killing 85 people and burning almost all of Paradise, California, (population 26,600) to ashes after it began Nov. 8. Hurricane Florence made landfall Aug. 31 near Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina, killing 53 people and leaving behind floodwaters that lingered for weeks. Hurricane Michael, one of the most powerful ever to make landfall on the U.S. mainland, came ashore on Oct. 10 about 15 miles east of Panama City Beach, Florida, obliterating the town of Mexico Beach and killing at least 43 people.

4. Child separation at the border.

In April, the Trump administration quietly implemented a policy of separating children and parents who crossed the border illegally.

The practice continued until public outrage at images of children living in cages led to it being suspend-

ed on June 20. The policy also led to having toddlers appear in court alone during immigration proceedings. A federal judge ordered the administration to reunite children in custody with their parents, giving a deadline of June 27. In court papers, federal authorities said they had reunited 1,820 children with their parents. More than 700 others were not reunited with parents by the deadline, for reasons including parents’ criminal history or other safety concerns — or because the parents had been deported. Trump and supporters later claimed that the policy had been used under President Obama without the accompanying anger.

5. Officer convicted in teen’s death.

People around the area watched live as a Cook County jury pronounced Jason Van Dyke guilty of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery — one for each shot he fired at 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in 2014. Van Dyke, a 14-year Chicago police veteran, fatally shot McDonald, who was running down the street with a knife. Video footage of the shooting showed that events did not unfold as Van Dyke and other officers claimed in reports. There had been widespread fears of riots in response to the verdict, prompting many downtown businesses to send their workers home. It was the first time in 50 years that a Chicago officer was convicted in connection with an on-duty shooting.

‘Making the difference, and it is working’ NCI group pushes for economic development across Illinois Valley

BY GOLDIE RAPP news@putnamcountyrecord.com Business leaders from all over the world are now more aware of what the North Central Illinois area has to offer because of the marketing efforts of the region’s economic development group.

The North Central Illinois Economic Development Corp. (NCIEDC) was formed a little over two years ago and has played a role in getting leaders to consider the area’s assets when thinking about a business endeavor.

Ivan Baker, president and CEO of the NCIEDC, told Bureau County Board members at their meeting in Princeton recently that the number of business leaders looking at the region is up 400 percent compared to what it was before the group was formed.

“You can’t get projects until you start off with having leads that are willing to look at sites,” he said.

“That’s why the 250 leaders, including all of you in Bureau, LaSalle and Putnam counties, formed the NCIEDC, so we would compete, market ourselves and not sit back and wait for something to happen, but be progressive, instead of regressive in creating more opportunities, more investment, more tax revenue for the region. You’re making the difference, and it is working.”

Baker said currently the region has 21 projects in its pipeline, compared to only four projects two years ago.

Western Bureau County Baker also spoke about a recent meeting he had with leaders representing the western side of Bureau County. He said NCIEDC had been approached by the Iowa Interstate Rail, which was looking for a better site on their rail line in Bureau County.

Around that time, Sheffield Village President Steve Endress and village

board members were establishing a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District that covered the western side of the village.

Baker said Sheffield’s TIF District is the only major industrial area zoned for federal benefits in the region.

“Thank goodness, because they have …100 acres in that part of Bureau County. It’s fantastic. The railroad is marketing it, we’re marketing it, and it gives us more opportunity to create jobs and more tax revenue,” he said.

sive” in getting more traffic on its tracks.

“Nothing against Burlington Northern, but they’re big enough they don’t worry about that stuff.

The representative from the small railroad was very, very positive, very aggressive and with the mayor of Sheffield, the whole meeting was very productive,” he said.

Putnam County Earlier last year, Baker met with the Hennepin Village Board to talk about economic development and how the nearby former steel mill fits into the picture.

NCI adding to its success stories The following are summaries of the successful efforts of the North Central Illinois Economic Development Corp.’s efforts to bring commercial investments to the Illinois Valley: Mexican manufacturer adding 100 more jobs in region Xignux, a Mexican corporation, completed acquisition of American Bare Conductor in LaSalle and will be adding 100 employees to the current workforce of 41 by 2019.

The 290,000 square-foot facility is now part of Xignux’ Viakable CME Wire & Cable division (VKMUSA) manufacturing electric wire and cable. This industrial consortium, based in Mexico, employs more than 20,000 people worldwide.

“We are happy to be in LaSalle and grow our business in the Illinois Valley,” Adolfo Riveron, CEO of Viakable LaSalle, stated. This acquisition by Xignux demonstrates the advantages of Illinois, the fifth largest state for foreign direct investment.

Fortune 200 company builds $160 million new plant Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) will soon open a new $160 million milling facility off the BNSF Mainline Railroad in Mendo-

ta. At least 60 people will be employed to grind different varieties of wheat to meet the demands of bakers throughout the Midwest. ADM operates 5 facilities in North Central Illinois. ”We are able to meet ongoing demand growth, drive efficiency, use new technologies, and leverage our capabilities. We are pleased to continue investing here,” Mark Kolkhorst, president of ADM Milling, said.

German company establishes North American headquarters in the Illinois Valley Fliegl Agrartechnik, the largest manufacturer of agricultural trailers worldwide, has relocated its North American Headquarters from Elkhart, Wis. to Utica to serve dealers and customers more efficiently. Fliegl is investing in expanding its presence in the North American market, and the Utica facility will increase the capability to maintain the demand Fliegl is seeing with its steady growth in North America.

Fliegl produces push-off trailers, dump trailers and manure tankers to provide solutions for the transport and forestry industry. Currently, Fliegl has 29 locations in 20 different countries and employs more than 1,000 people world-

wide. This German company’s headquarters are in Mühldorf, Bavaria.

Other manufacturing growth Other expansions included Diversifoam Products, Northern White Sands, Starved Rock Wood Products, and U.S. Silica, which resulting in the creation of nearly 200 new regional jobs. “The problems with this site need to be resolved for the sake of the whole region,” Baker said at that time.

Baker described the site as being similar to “owning a great car, but without a clear title.”

“Hennepin has one of the best sites, not just locally, but in the entire Midwest. But those four lawsuits involving the steel mill are tying everything up,” Baker said.

Investors have looked at and considered the site, but Baker added they expect a site to be clear and project-ready with all Ivan Baker utilities and access available.

“You’d have to practically give President, North it away with the condition it’s Central Illinois Economic in currently, and we don’t want Development to do that,” Baker said of the Corp. unsightly 853-acre site.

Baker said it’s a perfect location with nearby interstate, rail and river access, and that support from local leaders has been valuable. While the demolition has been proceeding at the former steel mill, Baker added the lawsuits surrounding the steel mill need to be resolved before investors would seriously consider the site.

“Everybody is ready to move on this, and the current situation is troublesome for all of Putnam County and, really, for all of the Illinois Valley,” he said.

GRANVILLE — Mary Barb Bishop, 78, of Granville passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2018, at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.

Mary Barb was born Sept. 8, 1940, in LaSalle to Ferdinand and Barbara (Repsel) Cass. She married Kenneth “Buzzy” Bishop on Nov. 23, 1963, in LaSalle, and the wedding was blessed in Spring Valley Catholic Church.

Mary Barb was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews, and one brother, Frank Cass.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Brenda; a brother, Fred; and her husband, Kenneth “Buzzy” Bishop.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granville with Father Robert Spilman officiating.

Cremation rites will follow the service. Burial will be at a later date in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the church.

Illinois State Police District 17 in LaSalle has two new troopers.

Troopers Eric Nieves and Blake Thompson have joined the department.

Illinois State Police Director Leo P. Schmitz commissioned 59 troopers Dec. 30 during the Cadet Class 128 graduation ceremony at Hope Church in Springfield.

The new troopers reported to patrol districts throughout the state Dec. 31.

“We are pleased to welcome these new troopers into our ISP family; I am proud of what they have accomplished as they worked toward graduation from the ISP Academy,” Schmitz said in a press release.

“They have made the commitment of continuing the proud legacy of the ISP, to strive for excellence while protecting the people and upholding the laws of the state of Illinois.”

Members of Cadet Class 128 raised $3,600 for the Special Olympics Illinois and donated 52 units of blood to the Cen-

tral Illinois Community Blood Center.

The troopers have completed a 27-week regimen of physical and classroom instruction, which included training in cultural diversity, procedural justice, domestic violence, critical incident response, firearms, first responder certification, control and arrest tactics, Illinois vehicle code, criminal law, motor carrier safety and juvenile law, among other topics.

In addition to the 27-week academy training, probationary troopers are required to participate in one-on-one mentoring with field training officers under a 14-week field training program, expanding their training to 40 weeks. Probationary troopers who successfully complete the field training program are advanced to solo-patrol status.

Other districts throughout the state had new troopers: District 1 in Sterling will have three new troopers, District 6 in Pontiac will get three as well.

The case continues to haunt USA Gymnastics. “I just signed your death warrant,” Aquilina told Nassar as she passed sentence. Nassar also faces a 60-year federal sentence for child pornography trafficking.

10. Pritzker rolls to victory. Democrat J.B. Pritzker spent a record $171.8 million of his personal fortune in his successful campaign to unseat Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner. Pritzker garnered 54.5 percent of the vote in the Nov. 6 election, while Rauner finished second with 38.8 percent. Pritzker touted his success as a job-creator during the campaign. He also pledged to reduce property taxes by instituting a graduated income tax, ensure all Illinois children have access to pre-kindergarten education, and legalize marijuana. Illinois Democrats now control all statewide elected offices and hold veto-proof majorities in the state House and Senate.

6. Politicians of “kinder, gentler” era die. Americans paid tribute to a pair of politicians known for their service and leadership in 2018. Arizona Sen. John McCain died Aug. 25 at age 81 after a battle with brain cancer. McCain spent more than five years as a prisoner of war at the infamous “Hanoi Hilton” during the Vietnam War before going on to serve more than 30 years in the U.S. Senate. George H.W. Bush died Nov. 30 at age 94.

Like McCain, Bush was a military aviator who later devoted his life to public service. Bush’s body was taken to the Capitol to lie in state, and he was praised by many, including for his deft handling of foreign affairs, such as the collapse of the Soviet Union, driving Iraqi forces out of Kuwait, and ousting Manuel Noriega from Panama during his term as president.

7. U.S.-China trade war. President Trump this year began in earnest his effort to secure better trade deals with partners across the globe, and negotiations with China had the broadest impact. Frustrated with China’s failure to open markets to U.S. goods and protect the intellectual property of American

companies, the Trump administration imposed tariffs specific to Chinese-made goods on July 6, putting a 25 percent tariff on hundreds of China-made products. The move would lead to a trade fight between the two world economic powers, but the U.S.’s wide trade deficit with China gives it the upper hand. A temporary truce was declared Dec. 1, with Trump agreeing to suspend more tariff hikes on China-made products for 90 days while the two sides negotiate.

8. “Year of the Woman” at the ballot box. The fall 2018 election saw a remarkable increase in female candidates for federal, state and local offices. A record 476 women — 356 Democrats and 120 Republicans — filed to run for Congress in 2018.

That was a 60 percent increase over the previous high of 298 in 2012.

The resulting vote saw 100 women elected to Congress, the most ever.

Illinois voters elected four women to Congress, including Democrat Lauren Underwood, a first-time candidate who unseated incumbent Rep. Randy Hultgren in the 14th Congressional District. The election will bring a return to divided government in Washington, with Democrats holding the majority in the House of Representatives, while Republicans control the Senate.

It’s imperative we make progress toward reducing the negative influences crime has on our children and to help safeguard the elderly.

Can Pritzker reverse state’s economic decline?

He must promote fiscal stability, incentives and state’s positive attributes

A

recent lead editorial in the Wall Street Journal contrasted the double-digit population growth in Florida and Texas over the past decade with the bottom-of-the-rung decline of almost 1 percent in Illinois.

Can Gov.-elect J.B. Pritzker reverse the population outflow and relative economic decline of our state, and how?

First, some context. The Illinois economy has been declining relative to the nation since shortly after World War II, and the net out-migration of our population, especially of whites, has been going on almost as long. In 1950, the Illinois per capita income stood at 130 percent of the national average (100 percent). Since then, our state has seen a slow but steady decline, to about 104 percent.

We are still above average, but just a bit.

Years ago, I reviewed our state’s demographic mix and found that from 1970 to 2000, our state saw a net out-migration (more people leaving than coming in, net) of two million whites, many to the sunny climes,

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan job opportunities and low taxes of the South and Southwest. This net outflow has continued, I’m confident.

Until recently, the outflow of our residents has been masked by a natural increase of births over deaths and a net inflow of African-Americans, Latinos and Asian-Americans.

For a paper of mine that I have on a shelf gathering dust, I noted that in 1970, the Illinois population was 11.8 percent minority and today stands at 37 percent, which I called in the paper the “changing faces of Illinois.”

This doesn’t excuse recent declines, yet it underscores the herculean challenge of turning things around on a dime.

So, I turned to a couple of savvy former directors of the state’s economic development agency for their assessments of the situation and of what might be done.

Jim Schultz of Effingham is a successful businessman who served in the director’s role for the first two years of the recent Rauner admin-

istration. Steve McClure of Springfield held the job under Gov. Jim Thompson three decades ago and has been a top business developer in Illinois and the Midwest since.

The two agree that our state has both great strengths as well as glaring negatives.

“In each of the five critical R’s, as I call them — roads, rails, runways, rivers and routers,” says old friend Schultz, “Illinois is in the top three among the 50 states.”

“The Illinois work force has a good reputation,” adds McClure, and the state has a higher-than-average percentage of workers with college degrees. Our state’s location in the center of things doesn’t hurt, either.

Yet, businesses thinking of relocating or expanding here see the huge state fiscal deficits, unpaid bills and obligations, and the uncertainty of how and who will pay them off.

And, because of this fiscal disarray plus a tradition of corruption, “Illinois has an image problem in a bad way,” says McClure.

What should Pritzker do to reverse our economic slide?

McClure says that if governor and Legislature would simply pass an honest-to-goodness balanced budget, with prospects for more in the future, “It would be a breath of fresh air for the business development

community.”

Schultz says the state Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity has tax credit incentives similar to those in other states, plus a robust network of 11 business development offices around the globe.

“But we lack a pot of money in the governor’s office that can be used to lure business, such as the money Wisconsin governor Scott Walker used to draw tech giant Foxconn,” Schultz observes. “We need a separate fund of $100 million for the governor to use.”

Pritzker has put a big infrastructure program at the top of his “to do” list; it should include funds to seal business deals.

J.B. (don’t I sound like his best friend) is credited with having played a big role in development of the notable high-tech incubator in Chicago called “1871,” in the famed Merchandise Mart.

So, Pritzker can begin to rebuild the once-robust image of Illinois by combining fiscal stability, business incentives, and a missionary zeal for trumpeting the state’s unparalleled attractiveness in roads, rails, runways, rivers and routers.

OGLESBY — Beginning this summer, the criminal justice internship at Illinois Valley Community College will be offered each semester as an elective three-credit course option rather than as a core requirement of the criminal justice Associate in Applied Science degree and certificate.

“This change will accommodate criminal justice students who may have found it difficult to participate within a mandated internship due to work and family obligations,” said program coordinator Kevin Hermes.

The internship allows students to participate in the field of their choice, gain practical experience

with a criminal justice agency and apply knowledge learned within the classroom.

The internship is open to sophomores who have obtained permission as well as the necessary paperwork from Hermes. They must then obtain approval and necessary information from the host agency before returning the forms to Hermes for final approval.

Freedom House plans volunteer informational meeting

PRINCETON — Interested community members are invited to attend an informational meeting about volunteer opportunities at Freedom House.

The meeting will take place from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Princeton campus at 440 Elm Place. Light refreshments will be served.

For people interested in becoming a Freedom House volunteer, note the next training class will be held from Feb. 5 to Feb. 26. Classes are conducted at the Princeton facility on four Tuesday evenings from 6

to 9 p.m., and three Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Participants must commit to attending every class.

The course will comprise 30 hours in the classroom and 30 hours of online independent study, which must be completed before the first classroom day. There is no cost to attend, and Freedom House will supply the syllabus and training materials.

Freedom House is a non-profit organization that recruits and trains community volunteers.

Those completing the course can serve as medical on-call advocates,

answer the crisis hotline, and work with group or individual adult and child clients. Freedom House provides services to victims and their children in Bureau, Henry, Marshall, Putnam, and Stark counties.

In the past year, Freedom House served more than 800 victims of domestic and sexual violence — women, men, teens and children.

PAC 2019 season with start with ‘Greater Tuna’

PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council is announcing a full season of community theater, featuring comedies and thrillers, in addition to its annual children’s musical.

The PAC will start off the year with a trip to “down home” Tuna, Texas. “Greater Tuna” by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears and Ed Howard, is a comedy set in the “third smallest town” in Texas. A cast of two will portray a variety of local and very colorful residents. This show will be performed Feb. 22-24 and will be directed by Dixie Schroeder.

The spring offering will be Neil

Simon’s classic comedy “Plaza Suite,” a play in three acts, each involving different characters but all set in Suite 719 of New York City’s Plaza Hotel. Director Ken Schroeder will be looking for seven men and four women to cast for the April 26-28 show.

The PAC’s third offering will again be presented in conjunction with Princeton’s Homestead Festival. “Deathtrap,” a mystery/thriller written by Sydney Lumet, will be performed Sept. 6-8. Director Joe Ennenbach will be looking for three men and two women to complete the

cast.

As in past years, the PAC will complete its season with a children’s holiday musical. Dates, show selection and director are to be determined.

Persons interested in participating in the theater program are encouraged to watch the PAC website, prairiearts.org, for tryout dates and information on each show. Volunteers are always welcome for all parts of the productions. Prairie Arts Council programming is funded in part by grants from the Illinois Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and OmniArts.

OTTAWA

Reddick Mansion Association will host trivia night OTTAWA — The Reddick Mansion Association will host a “Saturday Night Trivia” on Saturday, Jan. 19.

The contest will start at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the Reddick Mansion Association and hosted by RMA board member and trivia expert Steve Novario, the game will be composed of 10 rounds of questions with 10 questions per round. Categories will include “What Time is

It?,” “Let’s Get Married,” “Rock, Paper and Scissors” and “Smells Fishy.”

Teams are limited to 5-10 people and the cost is $10 per person. Cash prizes will be given to the firstand second-place teams. A 50/50 raffle will also be held. Space is limited. To reserve a table, call the Mansion at 815-433-6100. Walk-ins are welcome. Coffee, soda, water and snacks will be available for purchase throughout the evening.

Teams may also bring their own snacks and adult beverages.

All proceeds from this event will be used for the maintenance and restoration of the Reddick Mansion.

The Mansion, at 100 W. Lafayette St. in Ottawa, was completed by 1858, the time of the first Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. The building is open for tours four days a week and is also available for rent for special events.

Matthew Ridge and Amanda Kaad of Lostant are the parents of a daughter, Meredith Marie, born Dec. 29 at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. She weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 19 inches in length. She was welcomed home by two sisters, Jaclynn Ridge 4, and Emma Ridge, 14 months.

Maternal grandparents are Patty and James Shaw of Hennepin.

Paternal grandparents are Andy and Eleanor Ridge of Mendota.

Great-grandparents are Adam and Darlene Passini.

Joseph and Lyric (Glupczynski) Goskusky of Peru are the parents of a daughter, Mykinlee Rose, born Dec. 30 at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. She weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces and measured 18 inches in length.

Lady Panthers split their games The Putnam County Lady Panthers split their games this past week, beating Roanoke-Benson 42-32 on Thursday, but losing to Hall 38-22 on Saturday.

Megan Wiesbrock had 10 points in the Hall game with Avery Lamis chipping with nine. Wiesbrock had 11 points in the Roanoke-Benson game while Lamis hauled down nine rebounds.

Sartain, Mecagni placed third at invitational MORTON — Putnam County-Hall’s Evan Sartain and Joseph Mecagni placed third in their respective weight classes at the Schnarr Invitational in Morton on Saturday.

Sartain lost to Dee-Mack’s Keith Frisby, 13-8, but defeated Joliet West’s James Davis, 10-4, at 170

pounds.

Mecagni defeated Morton’s Ethan Grey by a fall at 3:42; lost to Normal Community’s Ken Hudson, 10-5, and defeated Joliet West’s Cody Treleven by a pin at 1:42.

The next competition for the squad is a dual meet this Wednesday with Seneca and Somonauk.

In the Princeville game, Kaleb Wright had 19 points for the Panthers while Carlson chipped in with 18. Daniel Sabotta bucketed 10 points. Jakob Pyszka had eight points while Nolan Whitney scored four. Mic Voss had one point.

The JV squad beat Seneca 44-43 and Princeville 45-30.
