‘Giving table’ helps make a difference during holidays

Store owner helps givers fulfill the needs of others

BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media PRINCETON — When Lori Boekeloo of Hennepin sees a need in the community, she does her best to fill it.

The owner of Tanks Pet Store in Princeton embarked on a holiday mission to help those who can’t help themselves with a need. She used her South Main Street store as a meeting place for anyone in the community who wanted to meet up to exchange or drop off goods.

It started as a simple Facebook post asking “What is one thing you NEED that you cannot afford?”

The response, she said, has been great.

Volunteers rushed to help a family that was displaced from their home, bringing toys and even gift wrap to her store for the kids.

A woman who hasn’t had new glasses for eight years got an appointment set up to get some.

“The person who is buying the glasses doesn’t even know her,” Boekeloo said. “She knows of her, and said she is able and wants to pay it forward.”

Boekeloo herself was blessed with a new carpet cleaner.

“I never had the thought that this was self-serving, and I hesitated because I didn’t want anyone to get that impression,” she said, “But it’s been wonderful to see.

I love my pet store family for this

“She asked me, did I enjoy giving to others, and of course I do,” Boekeloo said. “And she asked me, why would you deny that pleasure to someone who wants to give to you?

“And my perspective changed then.

You’re not a taker, taking something away from someone, you’re a receiver, receiving what another wants to give. It can be difficult to be a gracious receiver, but you’re going to give someone that pleasure.”

Boekeloo said she would keep the giving table at the store open as long as it’s being used.

“I love that it’s paying off for so many people,” she said. “You’re never going to become poor from giving too much.”

They built the business; who’ll take over?

Boggios take pride in the orchard, garden and entertainment business they created

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media GRANVILLE — Everybody knows Boggio’s Orchard is for sale and closed for the season, but the owners have absolutely no intention for it to cease operations.

And, while they’re willing to retire, somewhat, they certainly weren’t behaving like inactive retirees in a recent interview. In fact, they’re planning for their planting and products for their next year in business.

Keith and Denise Boggio rested at lunchtime before he climbed back into the combine to finish picking corn and before Denise headed out with her crossbow to hunt deer.

If they receive the price they’re seeking, and more important, find a buyer who wants to operate the orchard and entertainment business, then they would sell.

“I’d be lying to you if I said I didn’t wish this was the last year. But the last year isn’t going to come until that right person comes along,” Keith said.

“We’ve worked too hard to just let it go by the wayside,” Denise added.

Denise is a four-year breast cancer survivor, which made her think more about what she and they want.

“We want to start living our lives a little bit. Every summer we watch people go by with all their boats and all their toys and we’re working our butts off in the fields,” Denise said.

“Keith wants to spend more time with the grandkids.”

He interjects: “They won’t be thrilled if it sells.”

“It’s like their own playground,” Denise noted.

It took years of hard work and sweat and callous-building to turn Boggio’s Orchard into what it is today. In addition to selling sweet corn, pumpkins, squash, apples, mums, apple cider, cider doughnuts and pies, the Boggios turned their land between Mark and Granville into a major tourist and family attraction.

On weekends from Labor Day through Halloween, they draw their biggest crowds — 10,000 to 12,000 people sometimes. In addition to selling everything from produce to jam, they set up many scenes for children’s photo opportunities, have a pedal-car track and other activities for the kids, and run a petting zoo with everything from unusual chickens to Carmel the camel.

Keith says he knows the previous camel owner broke Carmel to ride, but he doesn’t even have the camel pull a cart or carry anything. At 1,800 pounds and as strong as a draft horse, he just worries about keeping

Though the Boggios closed for the season after Halloween — cold temperatures and snow caused crowds to decline remarkably — Carmel still had a professional gig over the holidays, taking part in a live nativity in Walnut.

“He plays a camel,” Denise notes, chuckling.

Keith said there was a time when he told Denise he “didn’t want any part of ” offering activities and attractions in addition to selling apples, pumpkins, Indian corn and the like.

“Actually I said I didn’t want my farm turned into a circus,” Keith said.

However, one winter Denise persuaded Keith to travel with her to a convention in Canada, to share ideas and learn from people who added entertainment at their farms.

They continued to travel to North American Direct Farmers Marketing Association events for about 12 years, and continued to add attractions that drew bigger crowds of shoppers.

Keith wound up loving those trips, mining for ideas and implementing them. Looking back, Keith wished they had built their original sales floor larger, and a larger bakery and processing area when they did expansions.

But, the decisions they made helped them make a living without a mountain of debt, and helped them

send their kids to school.

“The only limitation in this business is your imagination and your drive,” Boggio said.

Keith said they’re selling, in part, because they’re fortunate enough that their kids have good jobs and don’t need or have the time to operate the orchard business.

How it started Keith’s dad, Joe, noticed an apple shortage in the early 1970s and decided to plant some of his ground as an orchard.

“This was the only farm ground he owned, so he came up here and planted trees on corn-and-bean ground. At that time, everybody considered him the goofiest person in the county because he was planting apple trees on black land. Anyway, he planted the orchard with the understanding that someday we would be partners with him,” Keith said of himself and his siblings.

Then, “the bad economics of the ‘80s nearly bankrupted him.”

So, Keith and Denise pretty much have a self-made business.

“The bank was going to take the farm away from him (debt interest was in the 14 percent range), so we worked out a deal where we would buy 50 acres of farmland from him and the bank and he would get to retain 50 acres from the bank. So that’s how we ended up here,” Keith said. “We were taught how to farm, but we didn’t inherit anything.”

The Putnam County couple plan to keep running the farm market and entertainment business next year and perhaps beyond that, if they can’t find a buyer to maintain the business they built.

It’s not just apples, but fall flowers, pumpkins, produce, baked goods and other items that are available during various times of the year at Boggio’s.

A source of frustration The Boggios plant produce on land near the business on Route 71 as well as the large gardens in Hennepin south of Old Highway 26 and west of Route 26 near Keith’s sister’s restaurant.

This year, deer ate almost all of their beet plants and almost 1,500 of their muskmelon plants at the Hennepin garden — they left the watermelon alone.

“The deer in town are horrible.

They know where to go,” Denise says.

Denise is aggravated because the village enacted a rule against anyone shooting a bow and arrow within village limits between Coffee Creek and Old 26. Denise says year after year, does bring their fawns to eat in their vegetable gardens, and then those fawns grow up and bring their fawns, and so on.

Keith says they’ve gone from having six deer in the garden at night to 20.

Deer also eat some of the sweet corn, but nothing like the destruction of the melon plants.

The Boggios are preparing to plant again next year, no matter what.

“This will be my 42nd year in farming, and when you plant something,

you know the animals are going to eat some of it and you can tolerate that. But when they wipe out an entire crop …”

Even if the business sells, Keith does not intend to get out of the sweet corn business. He said he worked for years to develop his techniques for growing and picking what he thinks is the best sweet corn, and he’d like to keep going to shows.

He said he was at a farmers market in LaSalle County once when one vendor was dealing with a buying frenzy, and he wasn’t selling much sweet corn. Boggio still laughs, because the vendor had purchased Boggio’s corn to sell.

A source of pride The Boggios also take pride in lessons they’ve taught employees

through the years. Denise said they pay their employees a good wage, and “most of them come back every year.”

They both said they like to start employees when they’re entering high school so they can train them and they can learn and become proficient by the time they stop doing season work after high school graduation or a year at college.

“You teach them things that school doesn’t,” Keith says, mentioning tasks that take a bit of math, such as calibrating a sprayer. Their employees also can get an informal, hands-on taste of some of the trades.

“They can lear n everything,” Keith says, listing a few such as how to do some wiring, how to grease equipment, some mechan-

ical skills, even concrete work.

“You have to be willing to learn.”

Both Keith and Denise say it’s harder to find high school-age help today than it was 20 years ago — many of the hard-working kids are heavily involved in sports and activities.

Some of their returning workers lately have been involved in FFA, such as, this year, Carter Trone, who’s one of the Putnam County FFA officers.

Denise takes great pride when former employees come to see her after growing up. She also has had parents tell them they were good influences on their son or daughter.

She leafs through a scrapbook filled with photos from constructing buildings, Keith’s dad, Joe Sr., on the antique Allis Chalmers G rear-engine tractor they still use for cultivating.

Denise comes across a letter from Sean Egan.

Egan had worked for four years for the Boggios and was in Iraq, finishing a box of apple juice. It made him think of apple cider and the Boggios.

So, the member of The Banshees (Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squad) requested that the U.S. flag be flown over camp that day in the Boggios’ honor. He then shipped the flag to them.

Joe had gone into the farming business with his dad, Keith’s grandfather, in the 1950s, helping to operate a vegetable farm on Boggio’s Hill west of Mark as well as sweet corn and other produce fields along old Route 26 on the north side of Hennepin.

Keith and Denise quietly launched their business in 1989, selling apples from a tent and also selling to local grocers such as Ferretti’s, Denler’s and EconoFoods. They did not start selling right away at their Route 71 location because they agreed to not compete against the Boggio’s Country Market produce business at Hennepin. They opened their first building to serve customers in 1992.

Now Keith and Denise have about 1,800 apple trees in an orchard that’s a half mile long. He is planning to plant a high-density orchard for guests who increasingly ask to pick their own apples. Adding a high-density plot with 400 trees per acre instead of 100 should make the property more attractive and valuable to a buyer, as it should get into production quickly and satisfy visitors’ request for “you-pick.”

Denise and Keith don’t need to fertilize for their trees to flourish, and actually they employ a lot of help to rake up clippings and branches when they trim excess growth off the trees in the orchard in late fall.

“Our land is so fertile that the trees grow twice as many branches,” Denise says.

HENNEPIN — Charles F. “Chuck” Berry, 82, of Hennepin passed away on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019, at home with his loving family by his side.

Chuck was born May 22, 1937, in Aliquippa, Pa., to Arthur E. “Jack” and Lois (Paxton) Berry.

He married Donna Gayle Lloyd on March 14, 1959. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2019.

He graduated from Hopewell High School in the Class of 1955. Chuck served in the U.S. Army. Chuck was employed at LTV Steel Plant in Hennepin as quality control supervisor for more than 40 years and retired in 1996.

He was a former member on the Hennepin Fire Department, Putnam County Civil Defense and Masonic Lodge 344. He was a member of the Hennepin United Methodist Church. He served on the Putnam County Community Center board and was the recipient of the Ageless Achievement Award.

Chuck was honored in 2015 as Hennepin Citizen of the Year. He was currently serving on the Riverside Cemetery board.

Chuck was also a longtime member at Edgewood Park Golf Club.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Berry of Hennepin; two daughters, Darla (Steve) Harvey of Hennepin and Diana (Rick) Bean of Granville; five grandchildren, Ryan (Kayla) Harvey, Megan (Jordan) Kindred, Ashley Bean, Evan Bean and Connor Bean; and three great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Adeline Harvey, and Ryker Kindred.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jack Berry; and his in-laws, Evan and Gladys Lloyd.

Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 31, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with Pastor Deepak Holkar and Pastor Karen Karczewski officiating. There were full military honors. Cremation rites were accorded after the service.

Visitation was held Monday, Dec. 30, at the funeral home, where a Masonic service was also held. Additional visitation was held prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home.

GRANVILLE — Carol J. Seibert, 82, of Granville passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2019, at her residence, with her loving family by her side.

Carol was born Dec. 14, 1937, in LaSalle to Steve and Mary (Bazydlo) Jerman. She married Robert “Hawk” Seibert on Aug. 31, 1957, in Oglesby. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2016.

She graduated from LaSalle-Peru High School. Carol was a cook at Putnam County High School.

Survivors include four sons, Robert S. (Katy) Seibert of Henry, Scott (Cyndi) Seibert of Seneca, John (Cindy) Seibert of Plainfield, Ind., and Eric (Michelle) Seibert of Custer Park; four sisters, Mary Frandin of Ottawa, Vicky Davis of Davenport, Iowa, Dolores (Calvin) Moon of Cedar Point and Nancy (Bruce) Burmingham of Asheville, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Robert B., Tabitha, Erika, McCray, Jake, Jesse, Josh and Nikki; and one great-granddaughter, Maddyson.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, John; one sister, Marsha O’Connell; and one nephew, Ken Minor.

No service plans have been made at this time. Cremation rites have been accorded.

Pauline was born Jan. 24, 1933, in Princeton to James Paul and Mildred (Jones) Erwin. She married Ray Marchiori on Nov. 23, 1963.

She graduated from Hall High School in the Class of 1951. She and her husband, Ray, owned and operated Ray’s Place in Hennepin for 52 years.

Pauline was a member of the Hennepin American Legion Auxiliary, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and the church choir.

Survivors include one son, Raymond (Robin) Marchiori of Trout Valley; one daughter, Debbie Minyard of Hennepin; one brother, Richard (Karen) Erwin of Spring Valley; four sisters, Shirley (the late Ted) Boggio of Hennepin, JoAnne Misak of Peoria, Anna Christianson of Bureau and Geraldine “Poni” Monroe of Peoria; six grandchildren, Jack, Joey and

A rosary was recited Friday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Richard Erwin, Jack Marchiori, Joey Marchiori, Matthew Marchiori, Joseph Nowakowski and Ron Milner.

HENNEPIN — Virginia “Gail” (Pippin) Macklin, known to friends as “Gail,” was relieved of her battle with cancer on Friday, Dec. 27, 2019, at the age of 70 years, at home.

Born in Dante, Va., to Omer and Ruth (Ramsey) Pippin, Gail moved to Hennepin in 1972, where she made a home for herself and her family. Gail was a loving wife, mother and friend to many.

As an accomplished gardener, she had no greater joy than in sharing her many flowers with anyone who wished. She held a vast knowledge on many subjects, but her desire to learn something new never waned. She was also a skilled seamstress, amazing cook and there was very little she was unable to accomplish when determined.

No person was ever turned away from her door or her dinner table. Her fondest moments were those spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband and best friend of 40 years, Steve Macklin of Hennepin; three sons, Damon

STEVEN SIEMERS HENNEPIN — Steven W. Siemers, 61, of Hennepin passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020, at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru.

Steve was born on Dec. 13, 1958, in Spring Valley to Walt and June (McCollem) Siemers. He married Kathleen Kostellic on Sept. 22, 1989, in Granville.

Steve attended Putnam County and LaSalle-Peru High School. He worked for Hennepin Boat Store and was also a driver/operator for Humpty Dump Dumpster Services. He previously owned and operated Steve’s Amoco Station in Granville for 25 years.

Steve enjoyed being with family, friends and traveling.

He was a loving and devoted husband and father. Steve was a gentle, loving, hard working, giving man and

She was born Oct. 21, 1948, in Spring Valley to Paul and Millie (Tomlinson) Wiertz. She married Steve Zellmer on June 29, 1966, in lmmanual Lutheran Church (County Line).

She was a homemaker and co-owned Double Z Trucking with her husband, Steve, and was a Mary Kay consultant from 1974 until her passing. She lived in rural McNabb, where her and Steve ran their business and raised their children. She moved to Conover, Wis., in 2005.

Margie was a member of lmmanual Lutheran Church and the Red Hat Society, and she enjoyed her Scrabble Club in Wisconsin.

‘Gathered Treasures’ workshop participants make centerpieces HENRY — University of Illinois Extension Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners, along with Marshall-Putnam 4-H, hosted a “Gathered Treasures” workshop on Dec. 14.

Area youths, parents and grandparents came together to create a

gathered treasures centerpiece. Participants learned how to create a beautiful centerpiece out of fresh greens and gathered treasures. Some of the treasures were store bought, and some came from the Master Gardeners’ yards. Marshall-Putnam

Students ages 15-19, including 2020 graduates, have the opportunity of a lifetime available to participate in Rotary’s “Short Term” Youth Exchange Program this summer.

Putnam County Rotary will sponsor students who apply and qualify

by Monday, Jan. 13, to be paired with a student of similar age and interests in Europe, to spend eight weeks together — four here, and four in that student’s home country.

Area students have exchanged with students in Germany, Spain, France, Italy, England and other countries as well. Outbound students are encouraged but not required to learn the country’s language, as Rotary seeks to place students with families who speak and understand English. All matches are carefully screened, in both countries, to assure safety and the best possible experience for all participating students and their families.

This opportunity is available to PCHS students, home-schooled students and any other students residing in Putnam County. Other area Rotary Clubs also sponsor students in their locale.

As sponsor, PC Rotary pays the application and orientation fees; each family is responsible for costs of travel and costs associated with hosting the paired exchange student for that student’s four weeks here.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING

BY J.T. PEDELTY Shaw Media OTTAWA — Women’s wrestling, at both the international and local level, has been a rapidly growing sport in recent years, so much so that it is on the IHSA’s short list of “emerging sports” and seems likely to gain full-fledged status sooner rather than later.

That growth was readily apparent late Dec. 27, as more than 50 young women representing 11 different high school programs — including Putnam County, Princeton and Ottawa — met in Kingman Gym to compete in the first-ever Ottawa Girls Wrestling Invitational, with Putnam County’s lone entrant, Luna Gonzalez, earning the championship at 152 pounds.

“I’m happy because they made an only-girl tournament, and I feel like that will be better for the girls who are afraid to wrestle guys or who prefer wrestling other girls,” said Gonzalez, who said she’s the lone female on the Putnam County wrestling roster. “It was good to compete against other girls.”

Gonzalez scored victories over Pekin’s Audry Driscoll, Kaneland’s Marisa Sosa and finally Ottawa’s Ivy Jones to take first at 152.

“We had 14 girls (in the OHS program) last year and have eight or nine girls this year,” said Ottawa

sional district at the last presidential election. This year, that number for the 16th Congressional District was 607 signatures for a Democrat and 1,192 signatures for a Republican.

Efforts to track down some of the eliminated signatures were unsuccessful and Baer came up short by four signatures, or 0.7 percent shy of the requirement. “The closeness of the whole situation proves how much impact a few people can make on the democratic process,” Baer said.
