IVCH is now St. Margaret’s Health-Peru Consolidation took effect Jan. 1 with Spring Valley’s St. Margaret’s SHAW MEDIA LOCAL NEWS NETWORK

St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley and Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru have finalized arrangements to consolidate their health care operations to form a regional health network. The organization is now known as St. Margaret’s Health and is governed by SMP Health System.

Effective Friday Jan. 1, IVCH became known as St. Margaret’s Health-Peru, while St. Margaret’s Hospital is now known as St. Margaret’s Health-Spring Valley.

“We are extremely pleased that, after a two-year process, we have finalized the agreement to form one entity that will serve the healthcare needs of the Illinois Valley,” said Aaron Alton, president/CEO of SMP Health System, in a news release. “We want to welcome our new colleagues from St. Margaret’s Health-Peru to the SMP Health System. We look forward to working

together to create a vibrant healthcare network and enhance the care our patients have come to expect from us.”

Tim Muntz, president/CEO of St. Margaret’s Health, said the consolidation will enhance services and strengthen the financial health of the organizations.

“A thorough assessment is currently underway to streamline operations and explore new services our communities may need,” Muntz said in a news release. “We expect this process to be completed within two years.”

Suspect charged with 3 felonies carrying 10 to 45 years prison time, if convicted Peter D. Bergsma, 35, who is accused of shooting at Oglesby police Dec. 29, is being held at the La Salle County Jail on $1 million bond after appearing in court for the first time Dec. 31 morning – with 10% needed for release.

Bergsma, who appeared in court with a white medical bandage wrapped around his head, was charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and illegal possession of a stolen vehicle – both felonies carrying a minimum sentence of 10

years in prison and a maximum sentence of 45 years, if he’s found guilty.

Bergsma, of Grand Rapids, Mich., said Thursday he will hire a private attorney instead of opting for a public defender. His next trial date is set for 9 a.m. Jan. 14.

Mike Kirchhoff recognized as Fellow Member

OGLESBY — Fewer than 160 people worldwide hold the designation “Fellow Member” from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). Mike Kirchhoff, president & CEO of the North Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation, just became one of them.

“I am honored, humbled and thrilled to be recognized as a Fellow Member (FM) of the International Economic Development Council.

What a nice way to celebrate my 31st year in the economic development profession and the 20th anniversary of attaining the Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) designation,” Kirchhoff said.

According to IEDC, the elite status is conferred on members who have “attained unusual stature in the field of economic development.” In the course of his more than 30 years of economic development experience, Kirchhoff led the successful response for more than 120 site location projects representing nearly $2 billion in corporate investment and the creation or retention of more than 15,000 jobs. Having worked in metro, rural, utility and state government settings in four states, his background includes substantial experience in business retention and expansion, marketing, industrial attraction, downtown redevelopment, tourism and entrepreneurship.

At the North Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation (NCIEDC), Kirchhoff is solely focused on creating shared prosperity and economic opportunity in LaSalle, Bureau and Putnam counties by aggressively marketing the region’s locational advantages for business investment. Founded in 2016, NCIEDC is supported by hundreds of investors in both the private and public sectors who collectively recognize that the regional approach is the best strategy

for attracting quality jobs, additional business investment, and new tax revenue for the benefit of the three counties’ more than 150,000 residents.

During his time as an economic development consultant, Kirchhoff advised state, regional, metro and rural organizations in multiple states on a wide array of projects such as industrial base analysis, real estate development and reuse, economic development streamlining, target sector identification and analysis and other topics. He also authored multiple publications, articles and guides for economic development, including the business retention manual for the International Economic Development Council and articles for Economic Development Review, the Economic Development Journal and other publications and has been a frequent speaker at conferences, workshops and professional education programs.

Kirchhoff’s background includes leadership positions in several states’ economic development associations and local downtown redevelopment, regional marketing, tourism, chambers of commerce and industrial development groups.

At the national/international level, Kirchhoff completed three terms as a board member of the International Economic Development Council, twice serving as chair of the board’s Performance Oversight and Monitoring Committee and as a member of the Governance Committee, having also served as a member of the IEDC Education and Certification Committee for more than 20 years.

An Effingham native, Kirchhoff is a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD), holds degrees in economics and business management from Eastern Illinois University where he was a triple major, and is a graduate of the Economic Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma.

Schulz, nicknamed “Sparky,” was the genius cartoonist famously known for the creation of the “Peanuts” comic strips.

Putnam County Public Library to host Zoom presentation on life of ‘Peanuts’ creator

Festival 56 to present a one-night-only online play reading PRINCETON — On Friday, Jan. 8, at 7:30 p.m., Festival 56 will present a free, online reading of “Rabbit Hole,” a play by David Lindsay-Abaire, featuring the cast of Festival 56′s summer 2019 production, directed by Emily Wirkus.

The reading will be presented as a Zoom webinar.

Although there will be no charge, registration is required — go to festival56.com to register. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Also note that due to copyright restrictions, the reading will not be recorded and will ONLY be available for viewing on the performance date and time.

This Pulitzer Prize-winning play utilizes funny dialogue, characters with large personalities, and poignant moments of connection to focus on how one family learns to support each other through life’s challenges. As this family engages with magical thinking, pregnancy, anger, unexpected humor, therapy, and unanswerable questions, they ultimately attempt to make sense of the “rabbit hole” that produces increasingly difficult and unpredictable situations.

The cast of “Rabbit Hole” includes Kaitlyn Weickel (Becca), Eric Shonk (Howie), Janna Schmid (Izzy), Kathy Missel (Nat) and Cole Winston (Jason).

Born: January 29, 1924 Died: December 24, 2020 GRANVILLE – Eleanor L. Bruch, 96, of Granville passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2020 at Henry Healthcare, Henry.

A private service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at the UCC Church, Granville. Rev. Dr. Ron McNeill will officiate. Burial will be in Granville Cemetery, Granville.

Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel will be assisting the family.

Eleanor was born on January 29, 1924 in Putnam County to T. Oscar and Katherine (Miller) Fiedler. She married Roy Bruch on May 9, 1943 in LaSalle. He preceded her in death on March 21, 1984.

She was a bookkeeper for Co-op and Goodyear in Granville and she was a homemaker.

Eleanor was a member of the Granville United Church of Christ, the Women’s Fellowship, American Legion Granville Auxiliary Post #180, the Homemaker’s Extension and Put-

nam County Achievement Services. Eleanor was also Sunday School Superintendent.

She was also a recipient of the Ageless Achievers Award.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia West of Bayfield, Colorado; four sons, Ron (Suzanne) Bruch of Granville, Kenneth (Barbara) Bruch of Granville, Henry (Ida) Bruch of McNabb and Gary (Cyndy) Bruch of Magnolia; nine grandchildren, Tanya West Skelton, Brenna West Kampf, Dan Bruch, Kevin Bruch, Jennifer Bruch, Kathleen Bruch, Shawna Bruch Lowrance, Katie Bruch Main and Chris Bruch; and 15 great-grandchildren, Alex Skelton, Brendan Skelton, Reed Kampf, Brook Kampf, Nicholas Bruch, Emily Bruch, Owen Bruch, Emmett Bruch, Isla Bruch, Toby Lowrance, Nehemiah Lowrance, Kayden Lowrance, Miles Main, Emmett Main and Mason Bruch.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister, Doris Ackerman; and two brothers, Myles Fiedler and Kenneth Fiedler.

Coronavirus pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. in full force in early March, upending life as we know it by closing schools and businesses and canceling events throughout the country. The virus has infected hundreds of thousands of Illinois residents and left thousands dead.

The ripple effects of this virus impacted all facets of “normal life” as many people traded in their cubicles for the kitchen table for work space and a makeshift classroom for the kids, while essential workers continued to put on a brave face as they showed up for their shifts, despite potential for exposure to COVID-19.

The state was effectively shut down until the end of June, when restrictions eased, allowing for outdoor, and then eventually indoor, dining.

As the weather got cooler, the debate over opening schools ignited, with some districts in northern Illinois returning to a full-time in-person schedule, while others experimented with a hybrid learning model or stayed in fully remote instruction.

The pandemic rages on, and cases continue to surge in northern Illinois and across the country. Local businesses continue to take the brunt of the restrictions, leaving many empty storefronts as they’re forced to close. In Geneva, Fox Fire restaurant filed a temporary restraining order in November against Gov. JB Pritzker’s Tier 1 mitigations, which prohibited indoor dining. A Kane County judge granted the order, which was later overturned by a higher court. Restaurants in McHenry County and other counties also followed suit.

Record turnout in November election

The Nov. 3 general election had one of the highest voter turnouts in U.S. history. Several communities in northern Illinois also saw record turnout, leaving many races too close to call on election night. Kane County not only saw a record turnout, but the highest number of early and mail-in votes.

The McHenry County Clerk’s Office reported 237,640 registered voters – an increase of 19,462 over 2016 – and 165,512 ballots cast for a voter turnout rate of 70%, matching the 2008 peak.

Voter turnout in Kendall County was 76% – the highest since the 1992 presidential election. The Biden-Harris presidential ticket carried the county with 51% of the vote to 45% for

Black Lives Matter protests

Civil unrest broke out across the country and in northern Illinois in early summer after video surfaced of a white police officer kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, a Black man living in Minneapolis, for eight minutes. Floyd’s death sparked massive outrage across the country, as marchers took to the streets for demonstrations. Although most of the protests were peaceful, some took a violent turn. A police car was set on fire in Aurora, while several businesses were damaged. In DeKalb, looters damaged local businesses on Annie Glidden Road and Hillcrest Drive.

Peaceful demonstrations were held in just about every county in northern Illinois, with protesters calling for an end to police brutality. In Kane Coun-

Exelon plans to close Byron, Dresden nuclear plants in 2021

Plans remain in place for Exelon Corp. to close the Byron Generating Station as well as its Dresden plant in Morris in September 2021. Exelon announced its intentions on Aug. 27. The Byron plant has about 700 regular employees. It was licensed to operate for another 20 years. The decision to close it has been “in the works for some time,” according to the Aug. 27 news release.

The two plants face revenue shortfalls in the hundreds of millions of dollars because of declining energy prices and market rules that “allow fossil fuel plants to underbid clean resources.”

“Although we know in our heads that shutting down the uneconomic Illinois plants is necessary to preserve even more jobs elsewhere, our hearts ache today for the thousands of talented women and men that have served Illinois families for more than a generation and will lose their jobs because of poorly conceived energy policies,” said Christopher Crane, president and CEO of Exelon. “But we are only about a year

away from shutdown, and we need to give our people, the host communities and regulators time to prepare.”

Exelon has not ruled out keeping the plants open if things change with policymakers. Since the announcement, groups have mobilized to lobby for the plants to remain open.

The Byron Station Response Committee is spearheaded by Byron School District 226 Superintendent Buster Barton, whose district received $19.1 million taxes from the plant last year.

The Byron plant pays one of the highest property tax bills in the U.S. annually. In 2019, the plant’s main real estate tax bill was $34.9 million.

“It just goes to show you how much our community cares about our school district and how important the power plant is to our funding,” Barton said. “We think this committee will help identify and mobilize groups that can spread our message that the power plant should be kept open.”

In Kendall County, hundreds of people attended peaceful protests in Oswego, Yorkville and Plano.

In Plano, protesters were met by a small group of counterprotesters, but the event went on without incident.

The rioting in Chicago and Aurora prompted concerned downtown Oswego business owners to board up their stores along Main Street for several days. The boards came off the buildings as concerns over the prospects of local rioting eased.

AJ Freund’s parents plead guilty, sentenced after filing guilty plea

In August, JoAnn Cunningham was sentenced to 35 years in prison for first-degree murder after entering a blind guilty plea in the 2019 death of her 5-year-old son, AJ Freund.

In September, Andrew Freund was sentenced to 30 years after pleading guilty to aggravated battery to a child, involuntary manslaughter and concealment of a homicidal AJ Freund death.

Also in September, former Illinois Department of Children and Family Services investigator Carlos Acosta and his former supervisor Andrew Polovin pleaded not guilty to charges of reckless conduct and endangering the life or health of a child.

Both of those cases remain ongoing in what is one of the most high-profile crimes that McHenry County has seen.

Shawn’s Coffee Shop case

Longtime Sycamore business owner Shawn Thrower, 62, owner of Shawn’s Coffee Shop and Princess Alex Ice Cream in downtown Sycamore, will not serve jail time after he was found guilty Oct. 15 of battering a 15-year-old female employee.

Thrower was charged in February with two counts of misdemeanor battery after records show he picked her up, slapped her buttocks and bit her on the neck during one of her shifts at the café. He was sentenced Nov. 13

by DeKalb County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Pedersen to 24 months of court supervision.

Thrower testified in his own defense Oct. 15 in a bench trial with no jury and denied battering the girl, although court records show he’d previously had told Sycamore police he “grabbed somewhere I shouldn’t have.”

The victim and her mother, of Sycamore, both testified and were present for the sentencing.

The case brought division for months throughout DeKalb County over Thrower, a longtime, well-liked business man, a 1997 graduate of Northern Illinois University and a star athlete, and the victim, working in the first months of her first job, who during the trial and sentencing said she was hesitant to come forward with her allegations because of his public reputation.

Derecho hits Illinois

The derecho that swept through the Midwest on Aug. 10 left its fair share of damage in several Illinois communities, including Ottawa, where an EF-1 tornado damaged the Floor to Ceiling business and followed the Illinois and Michigan Canal path to the Fox River.

Calling La Salle County the hardest-hit area in central Illinois, Ameren Illinois took nearly a week to restore power to neighborhoods in Ottawa. Matthiessen and Starved Rock state parks shut down for more than a month as crews cleaned up debris.

Caterpillar plant gets new life in Kendall County

For decades after it opened in 1957, Caterpillar’s massive Oswego Township plant near Montgomery had been the largest employer in Kendall County.

But over the years, the number of jobs at the plant had dwindled from more than 6,000 to less than 1,500, prompting communitywide speculation concerning the plant’s future. In March, just days before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the heavy equipment manufacturer announced it had sold the plant to a firm based in White Plains, New York, that specializes in redeveloping industrial properties.

Meanwhile, Caterpillar officials also announced they would lease back a portion of the plant from the new owners and keep about 500 engineering and product support jobs at the facility.

Then, in October, Kendall County Board Chairman Scott Gryder announced that another major manufacturer, Bombardier Inc. of Montréal, Quebec, Canada, may lease a section of the plant for the purpose of assembling passenger rail cars for Metra. Gryder said the Bombardier operation would bring about 300 jobs to the plant and help further solidify its future as a major employment site in the county.

Joliet police have referred a complaint to state police made by council member Don Dickinson, who resigned after filing a police report involving a naked photo of himself and alleging an intimidation scheme involving the mayor.

Meanwhile, Joliet continues to look for someone in Illinois or elsewhere to fill a city manager’s office that has been occupied by three interim city managers in the past two years.

Pheasant Run closes, Wahlburgers opens

This year, one St. Charles landmark closed, while another much-anticipated business finally opened its doors.

Pheasant Run closed on March 1. The iconic resort opened in 1963 on land that was once a dairy farm.

The resort did not sell at an auction last spring, but in September, the St. Charles City Council approved a $5.2 million incentive for the Pheasant Run Mega Center after McGrath Honda expressed interest in expanding and relocating to the site.

There currently are no plans for the resort site. An auction of the resort’s memorabilia was held in August, where the public was able to bid on everything from room decor and food service items to golf and lawn care equipment.

Balance key to Marseilles tourney’s success Only one repeat champion in 11 years creates exciting small-school hoops action

cellerbrock@shawmedia.com When Jeff Owens had the idea to host the Marseilles Holiday Tournament way back in 2008, he had no idea it would become the holiday staple it is today, this year’s cancellation due to the pandemic notwithstanding.

Owens knew the small schools in the Marseilles area played quality basketball, but come the holidays had to either struggle against larger schools in quality events like Plano or had to travel great distances to play similarly sized foes. After brainstorming with friends like Randy Goodbred, Owens felt the week after Christmas was the perfect time not only to get the little guys together, but to show off his school’s newly renovated gym.

Since then, so balanced have been the fields in its 11 years, no team won it twice until the very first champ, Indian Creek, won again in 2019. In between, taking home the big trophy were, in order, Woodland, Putnam County, St. Bede, Kewanee, ReedCuster, Flanagan-Cornell, Serena, Marquette and Hall.

“I never thought it would be like it is, how it’s grown in teams and popularity,” said Owens, the Marseilles Grade School superintendent and AD. “We started out in 2009 with eight teams, but we went to 16 just four years later. I certainly didn’t think it would grow that fast. It took some of the other tournaments around the state years to grow like that. The 16 teams is just perfect. It’s eight games a day for four days, good crowds, the great fans following the small schools, and when they’re good, people come.

“But all I do is roll the ball out on Dec. 26 and say, ‘Here you go, guys, have at it.’ It’s the fans, the schools, the coaches and the players that have made this tournament what it is.”

Putnam County beat St. Bede for the 2011 title, led by all-tournament selection Jake Sale.

Other Panthers to be named to the all-tournament team are Harold Fay (2012-13), Evan Kreiser (2013), Michael Miller (2014), Alex Veverka (2014-15), Christian Harris (2015) and Caleb Dzierzynski (2016).

The first tournament in 2009 was won by Indian Creek over Woodland, 57-48, despite the play of the MVP, the Warriors’ Connor Kaminke.

But it was the championship game the following year in 2010 that really sold the event to the holiday game-watching public. Woodland

Cravatta. The two Streator schools – who had never met before – ended up in opposite brackets so if they did, it would be in the title game. That came to pass.

The MVP went to Cravatta, who averaged 30.2 points, but an ankle injury and staunch WHS defense limited him to just eight in the finale.

Behind Matt Hays’ 24 points, the Warriors came away with the title, 51-42, in front of a wild, standingroom-only crowd of 1,300 fans.

“The four games the first year were some of the most enjoyable I’ve ever been a part of, as an individual and as a team, but we lost,” said Kaminke, who has since returned to Marseilles as head coach of the Warriors. “The next year, we thought it would be awesome to play (Streator), but we both had a lot to get through to get there. It had to work out just right and it did. …

“Coach (Jeremy) Heck said that years from then we’d be talking about that game, and here I am, 10 years later, and every time I see my teammates or Coach Heck, that’s the first

thing that comes up, how exciting and fun that game was.

“Now every time going to that gym, it gives me flashbacks to that night.

What a great memory. … I wouldn’t want to spend Christmastime playing basketball anywhere else.”

Subsequent years were a blend of great individual performances – like Travis Schoonover of run-and-gun Reed-Custer scoring a record 47 points after having just three at halftime in a 101-96 OT win over Dwight in the 2014 title contest – and great team play in nail-biting finishes.

Take Marquette’s triple-overtime victory over Indian Creek in 2017. It took a Logan Komater 3-pointer with 12.5 seconds left in the fourth to send the game to extras, but the Timberwolves missed chances to win it in the first two OTs. In the third, the Crusaders’ Jack Snook – who already clinched MVP honors with 27 points – passed up the final shot to pass to Chase Thumm for a closer one with just 4.6 remaining, giving MA a 65-63 win.

There was also fifth-seeded Serena’s Cinderella run to the title in 2016,

starting with a 62-59 opening win over Flanagan-Cornell on Dawson Fuller’s 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Huskers then beat No. 4 Dwight and knocked off No. 1 seed Kewanee in OT, 66-64, to make the championship game, where Thomas Wehner’s putback at the buzzer beat Indian Creek, 51-49, before another sellout crowd.

“There are so many great performances, like Serena’s,” Owens said.

“Those were four perfect games they played, and those kids will remember those four days for the rest of their lives. That’s what you have to do to win a tournament like this. “(F-C coach) Brian Yoder once told me that all his kids wanted to do was get back to Flanagan and go watch games in Pontiac. Face it, Pontiac is the granddaddy of them all. But I knew we were a success when a few years ago, I walked outside for some fresh air and I overheard some kids from DePue going in and they said, ‘Gee, I wish we played in a tournament like this.’ When kids playing in another tournament come here to watch basketball games, that’s when I thought to myself, ‘Ah, we did it.’ ”

Thinking of reselling the gift card you received? Buyer and seller beware ROCKFORD — Reselling gift cards and buying pre-owned gift cards is now common practice, especially right after the holidays’ gift-giving.

But buyer and seller beware if you want to sell your unused gift cards, trade or buy pre-owned gift cards.

Several companies will facilitate this process for you, but if you choose to patronize a company that provides this service, Better Business Bureau warns customers to be cautious.

“There are so many potential pitfalls if customers are not careful what company they choose,” said Dennis Horton, director of the Rockford

Regional Office of the Better Business Bureau. “When a gift card is not new, you also run the risk of not receiving what you bargained for.”

Make sure to research the business before you buy, sell or trade.

Visit BBB.org and find out the company’s rating. Read the complaints of any online gift card reseller that you may be considering.

BBB of the Heart of Texas recently issued a warning on an F Rated gift card marketplace company that has racked up thousands of complaints including nearly 100 local Chicago area consumers.

Complaints from consumers

include alleged failure to issue payment in a timely manner after the gift card was submitted and confirmed received by business or non-payment for cards sold. Additional complaints allege that gift cards purchased from the website had a zero balance or the gift cards rejected from being purchased were returned with a zero balance.

BBB always alerts consumers about fake websites that offer to check your gift card’s balance.

According to BBB.org/ScamTracker reports, some websites that claim to check your gift card balance are really a way to steal personal

information of money off your card.

These sites ask for your card’s ID number and PIN or security code.

Then, scammers use the information to drain the funds off your cards.
