8,772 volunteer hours and still counting Granville octogenarian checks in faithfully to help out at Starved Rock park, book store

BY ALI BRABOY AND CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media Starved Rock Foundation members would love to see more state employees working at the rural Utica park.

Still, for about 16 years now, the volunteers have continued to step up for Starved Rock State Park.

And foundation leaders continue to be amazed at their dedication.

Book store volunteer John Muir racked up the most volunteer hours this year, and he and Rachel Mershon, 88, of Granville continue to amaze Foundation president Pam Grivetti.

Mershon has shown up for her volunteer hours almost every Monday and Friday, weather-permitting, since the book store opened in 2003.

This year, she put in 487 hours, bringing her total to 8,772 hours.

“I’ve always thought a commitment was to be taken seriously, and when I signed up to volunteer, I have showed up pretty faithfully over those years,” Mershon said.

While volunteering, Mershon said she helps open up the bookstore, gets ready for patrons to come in.

Volunteers move things around, get things ready. Sometimes she reads.

Mershon and other volunteers also put price labels on the books.

Rachel “I enjoy that,” she Mershon said.

She answers patrons’ questions or helps them find the answer if she doesn’t know it.

What made her want to volunteer at the park?

“I wanted something to do,” she said, mentioning she didn’t want to go out shopping with her free time.

“I enjoy talking to the people when they come in,” she said. “We get them from all over. It’s interesting to work out there.”

Mershon was a longtime teacher at the junior high school in Spring Valley and then was a substitute teacher for 10 years in the area after she retired in 1990.

Mershon was the Park’s/Foundation Volunteer of the Year in 2009.

The volunteers of the year for 2019 are Frank and Kris Borkowski of Ottawa, who will be recognized at Illinois State Fair in August 2020.

Grivetti said the Foundation usually has its holiday/end of year meeting in the visitors center, but this year had it on top of the bluff at Starved Rock Lodge.

Grivetti said having the meeting

in the lodge led to a few more people learning about the dedicated volunteers.

“We held it at the lodge this year, and the bartender was in tears,” Grivetti said.

Grivetti recalled the bartender saying, “‘I had no idea how much you’ve done.”

This year, 43 volunteers recorded their hours, and, said Grivetti, “some of those folks for one reason or another have not recorded all the time they have given.”

Grivetti said volunteers have “graciously given” 4,613 hours for the year spanning from November of 2018 to October 2019.

“Adding up the total hours every year since 2003 has resulted in a total of 93,432 hours,” Grivetti wrote.

“This equates to over 2,335 40-hour work weeks or over 486 work years with two weeks vacation!”

“This figure does not reflect the folks who have volunteered before the Foundation was formed because no one kept track.”

Grivetti began volunteering in the 1970s, and many of the foundation volunteers began volunteering in that decade and years since.

“These volunteer hours are a testament of commitment and love for this park. The Starved Rock Foundation members and volunteers have made a tremendous impact on the park, visitor center and the visitors themselves,” Grivetti wrote.

Rural transit agency seeking a new overseer

BY KIM SHUTE Shaw Media PRINCETON — Rumor has it Bureau Putnam Area Rural Transit is looking for a new overseer.

Bureau County Board Chairwoman Marshann Entwhistle invited BPART Director Mick Johnson to speak to the board Dec. 10 because she said rumors are swirling around town that the transit service is looking to sever ties with Gateway Services, headquartered in Princeton.

Though no formal request has

been made by Gateway’s board, Johnson said BPART is preparing to ask the county to take on oversight of its operations.

Johnson said the ride service isn’t asking to sever ties with Gateway due to any disagreements or conflicts, but simply stated, BPART is growing “painfully” fast, and managing its growth is taking time and resources away from Gateway’s core mission of providing services for persons with disabilities.

Johnson said BPART is self-sustaining, managing services with an

annual IDOT grant.

“We operate with no debt,” Johnson said. “The county owns 21 vehicles that were granted by the state, the Wyanet garage is funded by state grants, and the office space is funded with grants.”

In fact, he said the organization has in recent years had trouble spending all its allocated funds.

The growth, he said, in part is coming from better marketing of BPART services to local communities, and he believes it will continue to expand.

IT professional hired to lead cybersecurity program College’s tax rate to decline slightly OGLESBY — IT professional Nancy McDonnell will lead Illinois Valley Community College’s new cybersecurity program.

Trustees approved McDonnell’s hiring at their Dec. 12 meeting. She serves as chief information officer at Illinois Valley Community Hospital in Peru and previously taught cybersecurity and computer science courses part-time at IVCC. She also teaches online information security courses for Purdue Global University and served as vice president of information security and technology for Old Second Bancorp in Aurora.

“Nancy has 20-plus years of industry experience, 14 years directly relevant to cybersecurity,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran.

McDonnell has an MBA in IT management and a bachelor’s in IT from Western Governors University, and a certificate in computer networking from IVCC. The board also met the leader of another new program. Medical assistant instructor Kathryn “Kaity” Griswold attended the meeting with Director of Nursing Division Julie Hogue.

In other business, trustees approved a $12.5 million tax levy request for 2019, up less than 5 percent over the actual 2018 levy extension of $11.9

Scriba grew up on a Troy Grove farm in the 1920s and 1930s, served on destroyers in the U.S. Navy and graduated from LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College in 1951.

He moved to California and founded Swift-Cor, an aerospace engineering and manufacturing company that grew to more 300 employees by the time he sold it in 2000.

Over the past seven years, Scriba has donated $350,000 to IVCC. “Despite his incredible success after leaving the Illinois Valley for the West Coast, Ralph never forgot the role his community college played in preparing him for what would lie ahead. He and his family were generous supporters of IVCC, especially our capital campaign, and academic programs such as agriculture, medical assistant and nursing,” said chairwoman Jane Goetz.

The estimated equalized assessed valuation (EAV) of $3.4 billion is 4.99 percent over 2018. IVCC levies taxes in all or parts of eight counties: LaSalle, Bureau, Putnam, Marshall, Lee, Livingston, Grundy and DeKalb.

The meeting began with a moment of silence for IVCC alumnus and benefactor Ralph Scriba, who died Dec. 4 in his California home.

• The new Rotaract Club’s Nov. 18 chartering attracted 45 club members and Rotarians from 16 district clubs. IVCC’s 17-member club is already working to help the homeless by raising money and supplies for Illinois Valley PADS. • A newly-for med hospitality program advisory committee met recently and learned IVCC will offer its first hospitality course beginning March 17.

• The theatre department led by Dr. David Kuester and Don Grant Zellmer recently completed a successful run of the Christmas musical “Elf.”

PCJH staff members participate in fundraising events MCNABB — During the month of November, the staff at Putnam County Junior High participated in two fundraising events to help raise money to benefit Putnam County.

Staff could donate and buy days where they could wear jeans to school. The male staff could also donate money to participate in a “No Shave November.” The staff grew beards, goatees and/or didn’t get a haircut. The staff raised $200, which

they donated to the Putnam County Rotary Club to help with their “Little Food Pantry in a Pinch” project.

The project will provide a pantry and food items that will be accessible for anyone in need, and anyone may drop off any non-perishable items.

The first pantry is scheduled to open at the Putnam County Community Center. This is another example of community support to provide food and other items to people who might need the help.

Alaina Weatherford presents Book Talk program to Omicron members OTTAWA — Omicron member Alaina Weatherford, a third- and fourth-grade language arts teacher and reading specialist at Rutland Elementary School, presented the program, Book Talk, for the Nov. 19 meeting of Omicron Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International held at Pitstick Pavilion.

Weatherford is currently the president of the Starved Rock Reading Council. She shared new book titles for children in kindergarten through adults. The books included ideas for the classroom, personal enjoyment and some great ideas for Christmas gifts.

The business meeting was conducted by President Mary Sue Myers. After general announcements, the election of officers for the 2020-2022 biennium was held: Heather Reardon of Ottawa and Linda Ernst of Princeton, co-presidents; Paula Freepartner of Seneca, first vice president; Judy Hooper of Ottawa, second vice president; Marilee Applebee of Seneca, recording secretary; and Mary Jo Farrell of Ottawa, corresponding secretary.

Myers recognized the following Omicron members: Stephanie Benson, who is serving as the president of the Illinois Reading Council; Marilee Applebee, for her presentation to the Alpha Delta

chapter (Livingston County area) on the Holocaust; and Janice Kaufman, treasurer of Omicron Chapter for over 25 years.

Literacy chairwoman Paula Freepartner presented the $200 Omicron stipends to members Tracey O’Fallon of Ottawa, Cindy Christensen of Gardner and Kristy McDonnell of Morris. The awards are to be used for the betterment of their classrooms or schools. Personal Growth and Services chairwoman Janna Greanias announced that the applications for the chapter Grant-in-Aid for $1,000 for college juniors will be due by Dec. 31.

The next meeting will be March 17 at Seneca High School, where Marilee Applebee and students will assist Omicron members in creating a promotional video of Omicron Chapter and Delta Kappa Gamma. Applebee’s classroom studio will be used. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is a professional honorary society of women educators. The Society promotes the professional and personal growth of its members and excellence in education. Omicron Chapter welcomes membership inquiries from women educators in any field or level of education or who have retired from an educational position.

Public hours to expand at Social Security offices starting on Jan. 8

Starting on Jan. 8, 2020, Social Security offices nationwide will be open to the public on Wednesday afternoons, Andrew Saul, commissioner of Social Security, announced.

This change restores Wednesday public service hours that were last in place in late 2012.

“I don’t want someone to come to our office at 2:30 on a Wednesday only to find our doors closed,” Saul said.

In another move to improve service to the public, Saul announced the agency is hiring 1,100 frontline employees to provide service on the agency’s National 800 Number and in its processing centers.

The agency is currently bringing on board 100 new processing center employees and approxi-

mately 500 new teleservice representatives for the 800 Number. An additional 500 hires for the 800 Number will occur later in 2020.

“Improving service is my top priority,” Saul said.

Currently, a field office is generally open to the public from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays. Beginning Jan. 8, offices will remain open until 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, with typical field office hours from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Saul reminds the public that most Social Security services do not require the public to take time to visit an office. People may create a my Social Security account, a personalized online service, at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount.

Through their personal my Social Security account, people can check personal information and conduct business with Social Security. If they already receive Social Security benefits, they can start or change direct deposit online, and if they need proof of their benefits, they can print or download a current Benefit Verification Letter from their account.

Many Social Security services are also available by dialing toll-free, 800-772-1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call Social Security’s TTY number, 800-325-0778.

Social Security field offices in this general area are in Peru, Sterling, Galesburg, Freeport, Peoria, Rockford, Rock Island and Joliet.

Many new laws take effect Jan. 1

Tri-DENT investigation leads to three cocaine arrests

Transportation safety the focus of several SPRINGFIELD — As a New Year arrives, several notable laws take effect on Jan. 1. The new laws kicking off 2020 cover everything from transportation safety and increased traffic penalties, to supporting America’s military personnel.

Strengthening Scott’s Law 2019 has been a very tough year for the Illinois State Police. With three tragic deaths and numerous other incidents causing injuries, 2019 broke records early in the year for the number of accidents involving our State Troopers along Illinois roadways.

The drastic increase prompted the Illinois State Police to ramp up patrols to enforce Scott’s Law, more commonly known as the “move over law,” requiring drivers to reduce speed and switch lanes when approaching an emergency vehicle on the side of the road. As of Nov.

3, 5,860 tickets had been issued for Scott’s Law violations. During the same period in 2018, 738 citations were given.

The General Assembly and Gov. J.B. Pritzker also passed several measures into law, addressing the tragic incidents of 2019. Beginning Jan. 1: • The minimum fine for violating Scott’s Law will increase from $100 to $250 for the first violation, and $750 for the second violation.

• Those who violate Scott’s Law and cause an injury or death will be charged with a Class 4 felony.

• The Scott’s Law Fund will be created to educate motorists on the importance of Scott’s Law. • The Secretary of State will be required to include at least one question about Scott’s Law on the written driving test.

Increased traffic fines Illinois motorists may want to think twice about disobeying traffic laws next year. Starting Jan. 1, drivers can expect to pay more for passing a stopped school bus and speed-

ing through a construction zone.

House Bill 1873 increases the fine for passing a stopped school bus that has its stop arm displayed from $150 to $300 for the first offense, and from $500 to $1,000 for the second or subsequent offense.

Similarly, Senate Bill 1496 increases the maximum fine allowed for failing to reduce speed when approaching a construction zone, from $10,000 to $25,000.

New rules of the road Some changes are coming about what is not allowed on Illinois’ roadways. Beginning Jan. 1, Senate Bill 87 prohibits the use of motor vehicles on roadways with lighting that has a smoked or tinted lens or cover.

Law enforcement officials say these lights often make it difficult to see the vehicle.

Also, starting in the New Year, Senate Bill 86 will add to the current ban on cellphone use while driving by prohibiting drivers from operating a vehicle while also watching or streaming video on a device.

Streator and Ottawa police made three arrests recently on cocaine charges after the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team conducted a multi-month investigation into crack cocaine sales in Streator.

Dwayne Daniels, 32, of Chicago was arrested Dec. 18 by Streator police on a warrant for five counts of unlawful delivery of cocaine. Sandy A. Gullens of Streator also was arrested on two counts of unlawful delivery.

Ottawa police arrested Darrylena L. Merritte, 35, of Streator on Dec. 19 on a warrant for four counts of unlawful delivery of cocaine.

Police said during the investigation, all three individuals delivered crack cocaine to Tri-DENT agents on several occasions.

The arrest warrants were obtained with the assistance of the LaSalle County State Attorney’s Office. Daniels and Gullens are being held at the LaSalle County Jail on a $1 million bond each; Merritte is being held on a $500,000 bond.

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS news@putnamcountyrecord.com Connor Brooker of Putnam County-­Hall was crowned champion at 145 pounds in the Metamora wrestling tournament on Dec. 21.

Brooker pinned Auggie Gianaris of Edwardsville at 1:37 and defeated George Smith of Pontiac 9-6 and Owen Farquer of Metamora 3-1 in overtime.

“Connor had a hard-fought day and finished like a champion. A real character test to win a final match in overtime and come out the champ,” PCH coach Jerry Kriewald said.

The Panthers finished 12th of 16 teams. Jesse Lucas (106) and John Davis (220) each finished sixth.

Brooker went 3-1 at the Sterling

wrestling tournament, placing second.

Kriewald said Brooker showed “aggressive offense and was always looking to score.”

All six wrestlers for PC-Hall won a match, but Brooker was the only one to place.

Youth wrestling At Dixon: The Putnam County Thundercats had their first junior high wrestling tournament of the year. Cayden Bouxsein was crowned champion and wrestled like it, coach Jerry Kriewald said.

Braiden Actis, Baily Herr, Carter Hochstatter and Roman Mack all placed third while Max Chiado took fourth.

Eureka repeats at Lady Bruins Christmas Classic

The top-seeded Hornets won their fourth straight LBCC championship, defeating No. 2 Fieldcrest 51-48.

“To win this tournament again is sweet,” Eureka coach Jerry Prina said. “We don’t care who we’re playing or what the records are. We feel we can beat anyone anytime, anywhere, and we got a win against a very good Fieldcrest team.”

The Hornets have now won LBCC titles in 2019, 2018, 2016, 2015 and 2011. They were scheduled to play Fieldcrest in the 2017 finals, but they were snowed out.

Eureka led throughout the game, 14-7 after the first quarter, 28-20 at the half and 33-28 after three quarters.

Ella Ausmus led Eureka with 17 points while Ashley Kohl and Natalie Anderson added 10 each.

Hannah Baker had a game-high 18 points for Fieldcrest.

Putnam County 37, St. Bede 32 The Lady Panthers led at each quarter break, but never by more than seven (7-6, 19-16, 31-24) on the way to claiming seventh-place hon-
