Tiafoe looks to defend Laver Cup title

The annual Laver Cup returns for its sixth year as the world’s top players go head-to-head in singles and doubles matches, as the tournament is played in Canada for the very first time. Taking place at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, B.C., the action airs live on the Tennis Channel, Sept. 22-24.

With the final teams determined back in August, Team World captain John McEnroe announced the return of world No. 10-ranked — and fan favorite player — Francis Tiafoe as part of the six-man team set to hit the courts this weekend, making it his third Laver Cup appearance.

After an emotional victory last year that saw Team World take its first Laver Cup, Tiafoe and his teammates will look to defend that title once more.

Last year at the famous O2 Arena, Tiafoe came up huge for Team World, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas in a must-win match 1-6, 7-6 (11), 10-8, saving four points and breaking the team’s winless curse, giving it a 13-8 victory.

This also marked the retirement of 20-time singles major champion and former singles No. 1 Roger Federer as he and longtime rival Rafael Nadal fell in doubles to Team World’s Jack Sock and Francis Tiafoe, 4-6, 7-6 (2), (11-9).

Excited to get a crack at his third Laver Cup, Tiafoe looks to bring that same energy and focus this weekend, hoping for a repeat.

“There’s no doubt that last year’s Laver Cup win was right up there as a career high for me,” Tiafoe told reporters. “It was an unbelievable feeling to finally lift that trophy after coming so close in the past, and I can’t wait for another shot this year.”

With high expectations looming this year, look for Team World to set the tone early, hoping to become back-to-back champions for the first time in team history.

The ‘Continental’ experience: John Wick franchise gets three-night TV stay

For many of us, when we book a stay in a hotel (particularly a luxury one), comfort ranks above all else. Though the meaning of the word “comfort” varies from one person to the next and could encompass anything from the thread count of the bedsheets to one’s proximity to the bar, “comfort” in the world of John Wick is most closely associated with personal safety.

Those familiar with the John Wick franchise will already be aware of The Continental’s most important rule: the assassins seeking refuge within the hotel shall not conduct any “business” on the grounds. Put simply, no hits will be tolerated on the premises.

That said, NBC/Peacock is certainly hoping for a hit of its own (granted, a “hit” of a different kind) when the new miniseries

“The Continental: From the World of John Wick” begins streaming Friday, Sept. 22, on Peacock.

John Wick (Keanu Reeves, “The Matrix,” 1999), the trained assassin who lends his

name to the franchise supported by The Continental Hotel, first made audiences fall in love with him in the 2014 film, simply titled “John Wick.” Despite his former career as a hitman, Wick exhibits a soft side while taking care of a new beagle puppy in the wake of his wife’s death. However, when a group of gangsters breaks into Wick’s home and the puppy is targeted, Wick loses all sensitivity and comes out of retirement to avenge his furry friend. And while Wick’s situation may change from film to film, one thing that remains a constant throughout the franchise is The Continental; and this is where Peacock’s newest series comes in.

Created by Greg Coolidge (“Ride Along,” 2014), Shawn Simmons (“Wayne”) and Kirk Ward (“The Turkey Bowl,” 2019), “The Continental: From the World of John Wick” is a three-part noir-action miniseries that focuses on the history of the mysterious hotel chain that operates as “neutral territory for members of the criminal underworld” (per IMDb).

Colin Woodell (“The Flight Attendant”) stars as a young Winston Scott, the manager of The Continental’s New York division and a character already known to franchise fans thanks to the work of “Deadwood” actor Ian McShane. The role of Winston is a meaty one for Woodell, filled with lots of backstory for both character and setting as the series’ events dive deep into real-life New York crime history.

Anne Hathaway OF GET REAL (1999-2000 SERIES) ON FOX

Q: Didn’t Anne Hathaway have a weekly series role some time ago?

A: She did. The Oscar winner (for “Les Miserables”) got her big break in “Get Real,” a Fox series that aired during the 1999-2000 season. The seriocomic show about a dysfunctional family also was the first major credit for Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”), who played Hathaway’s younger brother; Eric Christian Olsen, later of “NCIS: Los Angeles,” also portrayed one of the show’s three siblings. Though the series lasted only that one season, it didn’t take long for Hathaway’s movie career to get going. “The Princess Diaries” was a big hit in 2001, and though its filming meant Hathaway had to miss her first semester of college, she said later that she didn’t mind. Director Garry Marshall had thought of Liv Tyler for the part, but his granddaughters weighed in and convinced him to opt for Hathaway instead, and the picture earned her an MTV Movie Award.

Returns were mixed on her movies that followed immediately, including “Nicholas Nickleby” and “Ella Enchanted,” but she sampled another medium by putting her singing talents to work in a 2002 New York staging of “Carnival.” She eventually got back on the box-office track with the 2004 sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” and moved from that into a variety of screen projects encompassing “Brokeback Mountain” and “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Hathaway has returned to TV on occasion, as a host of “Saturday Night Live” and the Oscars, and she also appeared in the streaming projects “Modern Love” and “WeCrashed” (serving as an executive producer of the latter as well). Additionally, her voice has been heard in episodes of “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy.”

It might be deer season, but it’s definitely not living room furniture season. Wardens respond to a deer hunt gone wrong as shots are fired into a nearby house. Then, in the winter wonderland, unsafe snowmobile driving puts people at risk.

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty HBO 8 p.m.

Q: Is James Marshall still acting?

A: The launch of the cult-classic drama series “Twin Peaks” in the late ‘80s launched James Marshall’s career with it. And the revival of the show in 2017 revived it.

After appearing in the revival season of the series on Showtime, which ended a pretty lengthy dry spell on his resume, Marshall was cast as a lead in two other shows. However, only one of them was actually released.

“The Pact” is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi show released last year on the streaming service Roku. It’s aired one season so far, but there’s no word yet on a second round.

attempt to put Marshall into a show after the new “Twin Peaks.” The first was “Three Knee Deep,” another sci-fi series that was produced independently but was never released.

This process was very much a repeat of his career arc after the first run of “Twin Peaks.”

When the iconic and deeply strange drama debuted in 1989, Marshall was a struggling young actor taking bit TV roles where he could.

But suddenly he had a central role on the most talked-about show on TV, playing the moody-but-dreamy young biker James Hurley. From there his career took off.

It peaked (if you’ll pardon the pun) in 1992, a year after the show ended, when he

appeared in three notable bigscreen films.

He starred in “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me,” a prequel to the series; and “Gladiator,” a boxing movie and teenage drama. But most notably, he had a key supporting role as one of the young soldiers on trial in the multi-Oscar-nominated courtroom drama “A Few Good Men.”

After that big year, the buzz fizzled and he struggled to find roles of the same calibre. However, he kept working. He took roles here and there, in diverse projects such as the family-friendly “Air Bud: Golden Receiver” (1998) and the gritty legal drama “High Crimes” (2002), until David Lynch and “Twin Peaks” came calling again.

Q: What ever happened to the guy who played Frank Nitti in “The Untouchables”? I saw him in a few other things, but I expected to see a lot more of him.

A: Here’s everything you need to know about Billy Drago’s career: He played, as you say, the famed mob enforcer Frank Nitti in “The Untouchables” (1987), and 12 years later he played the dog catcher in “Soccer Dog: The Movie” (1999).

If you had a villain role to fill, Drago could fill it, whatever the movie.

Sadly, Drago died in 2019 at age 73, after a long and rich bad-guy career.

If you lost sight of him, it’s probably because none of the other roles were quite as prestigious as the Oscar-winning classic “The Untouchables.”

The very next year, for example, he was hamming it up as an adversary in the Chuck Norris (“Walker, Texas Ranger”) action movie “Hero and the Terror” (1988).

Indeed, his work opposite Norris is some of his best-known. He also appeared in the high-profile sequel “Delta Force 2: The Colombian Connection” (1990).

More recently, his biggest roles were in horror movies such as “The Hills Have Eyes” (2006) and “Children of the Corn: Genesis” (2011).

While he remained very much a movie guy throughout his career, some of his biggest exposure actually came on TV. For example, he had lengthy arcs on the cult series “The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.” (1993-1994) and the similarly beloved teen drama “Charmed,” recurring on the series several times from 1999 to 2004.
