“The Old Man” - Season 2 (Hulu — Sept. 13, Season Premiere)

In Season 2, former CIA agent Dan Chase (Jeff Bridges) and former FBI Assistant

“Uglies” (Netflix — Sept. 13, Movie Premiere)

In a futuristic world that imposes a cosmetic surgery at 16, Tally (Joey King) is eager for her turn to join the rest of society. But when a friend runs away, Tally embarks on a journey to save her that upends everything she thought she wanted. Based on the hit science fiction novel by Scott Westerfeld.

Director Harold Harper (John Lithgow) set off on their most important mission to date — to recover Emily Chase (Alia Shawkat) after she is kidnapped by Faraz Hamzad (Navid Negahban), a powerful Afghan tribal leader. With all three men claiming her as their daughter, Emily finds herself in an identity crisis that has dire implications.

Brady at UFC Fight Night

Fight fans around the world get set for another epic welterweight clash as UFC Fight Night: Burns Vs. Brady kicks off Saturday, Sept. 7, at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The preliminary fights, as well as the main event, will be broadcast live on ESPN.

Coming off back-to-back losses for the first time in his career, against Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena, Gilbert “Durinho” Burns is set to come into this fight hot — another loss could alter the trajectory of his chances at another title shot.

Burns is the more experienced fighter going into this match, having fought the best of the best since making his UFC debut in 2014. Durinho’s exceptional fighting IQ, paired with his explosive and timely striking, is rounded out

Birthdate: July 20, 1986 (38)

Birthplace: Niteroi, Brazil

by a world-class Brazilian jiu-jitsu background — all things that make him a very real threat to Brady.

Across the octagon is a rising star in the welterweight division, Sean Brady. Holding an impressive 16-1-0 record, takedowns play a major role in Brady’s success, with the fighter boasting a 50% takedown percentage. The only loss of his career so far has been to Belal Muhammad, in the second round via TKO at UFC 280. Prior to the loss, Brady was on a five-fight winning streak, and since then he’s been reminding fans and opponents why he’s an up-and-coming phenom by staying firmly in the win column — including winning his last fight against Kelvin Gastelum by submission last December. Meanwhile, the co-main event will see Steve Garcia take on Kyle Nelson in a featherweight bout that’s sure to be exciting, as both fighters look to make a statement for themselves in the rankings.

‘Horses’ welcome Weaving: Acclaimed actor joins ‘Slow Horses’ Season 4

Apple TV+’s horses may be slow, but they sure are relentless. With plenty of the story left to tell — and having already secured a fifth season from Apple — the British Intelligence-based TV series is back for more deceit, double-crossing and potentially deadly duties. Season 4 of “Slow Horses” premieres its first two episodes Wednesday, Sept. 4, on Apple TV+.

Released and shared on X (formerly Twitter) as soon as last season ended, the Season 4 trailer for “Slow Horses” reveals everything from the threat of a serial bomber in London to a death on the Slough House team and the addition of at least one new character, named Frank Harkness.

Played by Hugo Weaving, who is best known for his roles as people’s terrorist V in “V for Vendetta” (2005), Agent Smith in the original Matrix trilogy (1999-2005) and Elrond in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003), Harkness is billed as “one of the most exciting developments in

the Apple TV+ show” (per ScreenRant).

Developed as a villainous force to be reckoned with, ScreenRant writer Sarah Little points to Weaving’s “Slow Horses” character as being poised to possibly “become the best villain the show has ever featured.”

Leading man Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour,” 2017), however — unlike his character, Jackson Lamb — is simply delighted to be back at it again on television.

“Some of the best stuff you see is on your television screen,” Oldman shared during a TV news event, adding, “I love long-form.”

During the same event, as reported by IndieWire journalist Ben Travers in May of this year, Oldman revealed that he had always wished to “revisit a character” on an episodic basis. Luckily, “Slow Horses,” his first leading television role, has offered him the perfect chance to do exactly that. And given the recent renewal of a fifth season, it seems there will be plenty more of disgraced (at times disgraceful) MI5 Agent Lamb to go around. In fact, Oldman has said he would be happy to play Lamb until Apple TV+ exhausted the Slough House source material by author Mick Herron.

“If they’re [Apple TV+] happy to keep us on the air, then I’m very happy to ... do all eight books,” Oldman told the panel of entertainment reporters during the aforementioned press junket earlier this year.

“And since we started, [Herron] has written another one, so who knows? Maybe it’ll be nine books, and I’ll be happy to play Jackson Lamb [in all of them.]”

Actor Jack Lowden (“Dunkirk,” 2017), on the other hand, praises the show for its unique and cutting sense of humour.

Lowden, who plays stunted MI5 up-andcomer River Cartwright in the series, said that while he had “never read the books,” the humour in the scripts was the “biggest draw” for him.

There’s a mystery afoot when an anonymous, cloaked buyer purchases all of Judy’s art. While she attempts to find the culprit, Beef, Wolf, Ham and Moon keep themselves occupied by growing a massive cabbage, and Honeybee and Jerry come up with a challenge of their own.

Ahead of Season 5, a bonus episode of “The Great North” airs Sunday, Sept. 1, on Fox, with all episodes from Season 4 currently available to watch at fox.com/the-great-north/

The first two episodes of this brand-new series air back-to-back, introducing audiences to English teacher Evan Marquez (Brian Jordan Alvarez). While trying to balance his personal, professional and political lives inside the high school walls, Mr. Marquez is surrounded by a lively group of teachers, staff and students who often make it feel like he’s working in a circus

celebrity q&a

instead. Making its debut, “English Teacher” premieres Monday, Sept. 2, on FX, and streams the next day on Hulu. Catch a glimpse of what’s to come, with this exclusive trailer youtube.com/ watch?v=jfvKrsaZrEA

On air for less than a year, “The Swan” — a reality series that supposedly offered fairytale-style makeovers — was canceled after the cast discovered they were really contestants in a plastic surgery face-off. Going where the cameras didn’t dare, this fascinating pilot episode continues the “Dark Side” franchise, offering interviews with plastic surgeon Dr. Dubrow, who worked on the show. “The Dark Side of Reality TV” premieres this Tuesday, Sept. 3, on Vice, with episodes of its sister series, “The Dark Side of Comedy,” available to stream at vicetv.com/en_us/show/ dark-side-of-comedy

Carol Burnett

OF THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW ON CATCHY COMEDY, METV

Q: Why are some repeats of “The Carol Burnett Show” an hour long, while others are only a half-hour long?

A: Originally, the classic comedy-variety series ran for an hour weekly during its 1967-78 tenure on CBS, when it earned a total of 25 Primetime Emmy Awards. It was shown in that form during a recent weekend “Binge” marathon on Catchy Comedy, but soon after the original run ended, the episodes from five of its seasons were edited into a 30-minute format — largely focused on the comedy content, though musical sequences sometimes were kept in, too — and the show was renamed “Carol Burnett and Friends.”

Those edited programs have long been a weekday attraction on MeTV, but the issue has been confused a bit more by the fact that the program also is known there presently as “The Carol Burnett Show” in its half-hour form. Arguably the best way to tell the lengths apart before a viewing is simply to look at a programming guide and see how long the show is slated for, 30 minutes or 60 minutes.

Burnett, who has made Primetime Emmy history this year as the oldest female comedy nominee ever with her current supporting-actress bid for Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale,” has very actively helped to promote direct-marketing sales of “The Carol Burnett Show” DVDs by participating in commercials for them. (She even has autographed some of the sets.) However, different collections culled from the series also are available from various merchants, either in physical stores or via online sellers.

Chi McBride

Q: What ever happened to Chi McBride? For a while in the ‘00s, it seemed like he was the next big thing, but I haven’t seen much of him since.

A: Chi McBride was indeed one of the buzziest actors of the 2000s, thanks to successively larger roles in talked-about shows such as “Boston Public” and the cultishly beloved late ‘00s sitcom “Pushing Daisies,” alongside big-screen hits such as “Gone in 60 Seconds” (2000) and “I, Robot” (2004).

In some ways, his profile was harmed by finding a

little stability. Those shows and films attracted a lot of attention, but they were all over relatively quickly (“Boston Public” was the longest-lasting one, but even it was canceled after four years).

Then, in 2013, he joined the ensemble of “Hawaii Five-0,” an already successful show entering its fourth season. Given that it was already established, it had also lost a lot of the buzz — it was, by that point, nothing more or less than a very highly rated, solid performer that reliably drew in

millions of eyeballs for CBS every week.

Unfortunately, even reliable hits have to end eventually, as “Hawaii Five-0” did in 2020. Since then, McBride has been looking for his next big project. His biggest shot was the 2022 CBS sitcom “How We Roll,” but it was canceled after one season.

But, he’s taking another run at sitcom success right now. He has a role in the upcoming Netflix series “Little Sky,” currently in post-production. No release date has been announced yet.

been the best part of the show for me. I feel like I’ve seen her before, though — have I? And is she doing anything else?

A: Whether you’ve seen Eve Best before depends largely, though not entirely, on whether you were a “Nurse Jackie” fan — but whether you’ll be excited about her next project or not definitely hinges on it.

You’re not alone in citing Best’s performance as Princess Rhaenys Targaryen as a highlight of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” (the term “fan favorite” has been tossed around a lot). But the swords-and-castles fantasy show is miles away from her biggest prior role, in the utterly grounded and modern “Nurse Jackie,” a comedy that aired from 2009 to 2015 on HBO’s competitor network, Showtime.

She played Dr. Eleanor O’Hara, a close friend and colleague to the titular, drug-addicted Jackie (Edie Falco, “The Sopranos”).

It’s her biggest pre-”House of the Dragon” role, and it’s poised to be her next role as well. It was announced in the spring that “Nurse Jackie’s” writers and producers are starting work on a sequel miniseries, to be released on Amazon Prime instead of Showtime, and Best will be involved. It’s just now in pre-production, though, so don’t expect to see it any time soon.

If you don’t remember Best wearing scrubs, you may also have seen her in any one of a few miniseries she did, such as 2014’s “The Honorable Woman” or the A&E drama “Shackleton” back in 2002. Or, you may remember her in a small but notable turn as Wallis Simpson in the smash-hit 2010 biopic “The King’s Speech.”

Chicano crimefighters:

New docu-series shines a light on Houston’s ‘Chicano Squad’

Dedicated to tackling Houston’s soaring crime rates, the country’s first-ever Latino homicide team was founded in 1979. Detailing their triumphs and tribulations, the two-episode docuseries “The Chicano Squad” airs Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 2 and 3, on A&E.

Celebrating one of the most highly decorated law enforcement units in Houston’s history, this two-day documentary special delves into the U.S.’s first all-Latin homicide team, created to better understand — and eventually to help solve — the soaring Latino homicide rate Houston experienced throughout the late ‘70s.

Made up of five bilingual Mexican American officers (who spoke both English and Spanish) — Jim Montero, José Selvera, Raymond Gonzales, U.P. Hernandez and Cecil Mosqueda — this specialized, groundbreaking unit pulled officers from their given beats, promoting them to detectives before sending them onto the streets to further interact with locals, hoping the unit might have a better chance at understanding and connecting with Houston’s Latino community, despite their rookie status.

Initiated by Montero, this specialized

unit was “given just 90 days to solve all open Latin murder cases, regain the trust of the community and assist in any new crimes involving Spanish-speaking people,” says A&E in the series press release.

It continued: “With no prior homicide experience, unchecked racism and discrimination at all levels of the department, a corrupt police union, the highest crime rate in the country and an immigrant community that is distrustful of the police, this first-ofits-kind unit of crime fighters lacked experience in homicide investigation and were forced to learn on the job.”
