Teen prospect Miles Russell gets set to make his pro debut
Golf fans are in for a treat this week as 15-year-old sensation Miles Russell prepares to make his PGA Tour debut at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, June 27-30 at Detroit’s own Detroit Golf Club. The tournament broadcasts live on CBS.
As the PGA Tour heads to Detroit, all eyes will be on Russell, the youngest champion in Junior Players Championship history. Now, as one of the youngest players to ever make the PGA Tour cut, the Jacksonville Beach, Florida, native is set to make his pro golf debut in a highly competitive tournament.
“Ever since I first started playing golf, my dream has been to compete on the PGA Tour and test my game against the best players,” Russell said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to making the most of the experience later this month.”
Leading up to his debut, Russell was the American Junior Golf Association player of the year in 2023. In 2024, Russell has continued his impressive play, posting a 5-under 66 at the LECOM Suncoast Classic in April, finishing the final round on an impressive run with seven birdies in 10 holes, making him the youngest player to complete a top-25 finish on either the PGA Tour or the Korn Ferry Tour since at least 1983.
While much of the focus will be on the 15-year-old phenom Russell, Rickie Fowler will try to defend his Rocket Mortgage Classic title. However, this season has seen Fowler struggle considerably since winning at the Detroit Golf Club in 2023.
Speaking to reporters at the Rocket Mortgage Classic media day, Fowler remained optimistic as he looks to become the first two-time champion at the tournament.
“A lot comes down to process and having self-belief. Things have been very close,” Fowler said via Zoom. “We’ve had a lot of good rounds. I just haven’t been able to piece them together and put a good week together,” said Fowler.

High class crime: ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ continues Detroit cop’s hijinks in Los Angeles
One of film’s most beloved and unorthodox police detectives is back on his beat, 30 years since audiences last saw him take down crime in Los Angeles’ most famous ZIP code. Eddie Murphy (“You People,” 2023) stars in the brand new action-comedy “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” premiering Wednesday, July 3, on Netflix.
Murphy reprises his role as Detective Axel Foley — who first made his iconic appearance in 1984’s “Beverly Hills Cop,” which was followed up by sequels in 1987 and 1994 — a Detroit police officer whose work often takes him to sunny California and the glamorous, storied suburb of Beverly Hills to chase down drug lords, weapons kingpins and counterfeiting rings.
Joining Axel yet again is his trusty partner, Lt. Billy Rosewood, portrayed by Judge Reinhold (“Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” 1982). Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Mr. Corman”) is Bobby Abbott, a detective with the Beverly Hills Police Department and ex-boyfriend of Axel’s estranged daughter, Jane (Taylour Paige, “Zola,” 2020).
So, what brings Axel back to the 90210 from his home in the Motor City this time, four decades since his first mayhem-filled assignment? Axel’s daughter Jane, a criminal defense attorney, receives a threat to her life, prompting her father to team up with old and new partners and
pin down the danger.
In an official trailer for the film, Axel, Billy and Bobby drive chaos all over Beverly Hills, from crash landing a helicopter on a golf course, to chasing down bad guys in a snow plow and steering a cargo truck through a palatial home’s sitting room. The crime-fighting crew will get to the bottom of this case at any cost.
Reprising their roles from previous Beverly Hills Cop franchise films are Paul Reiser (“Mad About You”) as Police Chief Jeffrey Friedman; John Ashton (“Gone Baby Gone,” 2007) as Sgt. John Taggart; and Bronson Pinchot (“Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”) as former foe, Serge.
Joining the cast in this installment is Kevin Bacon (“Leave the World Behind,” 2023) as Capt. Grant, who welcomes Axel back to the force — but can he be trusted? Axel has dealt with crooked cops before, so it wouldn’t be the first time he found corruption went all the way to the top.
In a recent appearance on “The Daily Show,” Bacon told Jordan Klepper, “I’m not afraid of being a bad guy in the movie,” summing up his philosophy on being hated on screen by saying, “to me, it’s just great parts and I just want to be them. And I’m exorcising some demons.”
A newcomer to the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, Gordon-Levitt talked to Empire about his role in the upcoming film, saying, “this character is a bit straightlaced — I am an actual Beverly Hills cop, whereas Axel Foley is a cop from Detroit who finds himself in Beverly Hills — but he’s not a simple straight man.”
Anyone going toe-to-toe with Murphy is the straight man by default, but Gordon-Levitt shared that his character isn’t just there to question Axel’s hijinks. “I also get my licks in. I wouldn’t be living up to this crazy opportunity if I wasn’t going to have a few myself. We got to do some really fun stuff.”

Elizabeth Banks
OF PRESS YOUR LUCK ON ABC
BY JAY BOBBIN
Q: I’m glad to see Elizabeth Banks and “Press Your Luck” back on the ABC schedule, but I know I’ve seen some of the episodes before. Are there new ones coming?
A: There are. One of the strong suits of the game-show revival has been its repeatability, but it’s true that those who watch the program constantly may well recognize certain episodes as ones they’ve seen before. Reruns are being used during the early part of ABC’s summer season, but new installments are slated to resume on July 18.
A big reason for that timing may be the network’s desire to use “Press Your Luck” as the lead-in for a new game that premieres that night. “Lucky 13,” with Shaquille O’Neill and Gina Rodriguez (the latter coming off the now-canceled ABC sitcom “Not Dead Yet”) as interestingly paired co-hosts posing 13 true-or-false trivia questions to contestants who have the chance to win $1 million.
That sum also continues to be the top prize on “Press Your Luck,” and Banks has been so busy with work as an actress and filmmaker lately, it’s a lucky thing for ABC that she wants to continue to make the game she was eager to revive when the current version premiered in 2019. It will be entering its sixth season in July, with Banks serving as one of the executive producers (along with her husband, Max Handelman) as well as the host.
As with most game shows, multiple episodes of “Press Your Luck” can be taped in one day, so the time commitment for Banks to turn out a whole season lasts only so long. Still, she has many other creative commitments — which presently include an animated, adultthemed “Flintstones” series update titled “Bedrock” (she’s an executive producer and the voice of Pebbles) and a movie thriller titled “DreamQuil” — so it’s no small thing that she isn’t letting “Luck” run out.

Lili Taylor
Q: Who is the actress who played Mary Todd Lincoln in “Manhunt”? And what’s she doing next?
A: In “Manhunt,” the Apple TV+ miniseries about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln’s wife was played by Lili Taylor.
Taylor’s best known for starring in the weird and controversial indie film “I Shot Andy Warhol” (1996), but she’s been a fixture of the big and small screens since 1988 when she came to fame as part of the ensemble of another cult favorite, “Mystic Pizza.”
As for what’s next for Taylor after “Manhunt,” first off, it’s not clear if her other streaming series will be back.
She stars in the Amazon Prime series “Outer Range,” a sci-fi western in which she plays the matriarch of the Abbot family, opposite Josh Brolin (“Avengers: Endgame,” 2019). Its second season was released just a few weeks ago, with no word yet on a third. The story is still very much up in the air, and it seems to have been a hit for

But in the meantime, Taylor will be taking a little diversion down a pretty well-known street. She’s booked a role in the upcoming teen-centric horror film “Fear Street: Prom Queen,” based on the book of the same name by R.L. Stine.
The “Fear Street” books were mega-sellers for Stine and helped pioneer the lucrative teen-horror literary genre as we know it today. “Prom Queen” is filming now, with no release date announced so far.

Brian Bosworth
Q: Did Brian Bosworth keep acting after “Stone Cold”? Does he still do movies?
A: It may come as a surprise to many that Brian Bosworth, the former football star, did indeed continue acting after his generally disastrous debut in 1991’s “Stone Cold.” In fact, he has two projects on the go right now.
One of those is a series adaptation of “Revelation Road,” a film series that, like Bosworth himself, has had surprising longevity in the business.
The “Revelation Road” films, and now TV series, are part of the parallel stream of faithbased entertainment — stories with overt Christian themes that are produced independently of the studio system. Because they operate outside mainstream entertainment, they tend to fly under most people’s radar even if, as in this case, they’re pretty successful.
Bosworth has starred in all three films and in the series, which is now in post-production. There’s no word on a distributor yet, which means it could go straight to video, like the films did.
His other film currently underway puts him in more familiar territory. He has a role in “Signing Day,” an indie comedy about a young college football coach trying to recruit a high school star in rural Alabama.
This, by the way, isn’t some sudden flurry of activity for Bosworth. He’s actually maintained a fairly steady acting career since retiring from the NFL in 1989.
His high-profile playing career (he signed what was, at the time, the biggest rookie contract in NFL history) and outspoken nature (it would take too long to list the controversies he was involved in) got him a starring role in his film debut, “Stone Cold.” It was, however, a box-office flop.
Despite that, he was given a lead role again in 1996’s “One Man’s Justice.” Since then, he’s averaged a movie every few years or so — just about all of them low-budget indie action flicks.

The wall giveth, and the wall taketh away. Cross your fingers and hope for big bucks, as “The Wall” returns for a sixth season this Monday, July 1, on NBC.
The wall is tall and the ball goes far — so, betting on where it lands is nearly impossible. While players come from across the country to battle the odds, the randomness of the wall can be controlled by no one.
“It works like this,” says NBC. “When a question is answered correctly, a green ball falls down the four-story wall and more cash is added to the slot players’ winning total, called the bank.” Which slot it lands in, however, is totally random, meaning the amount of cash the player wins for each correct answer is left entirely up to chance. Answer a question incorrectly, and a red ball drops, deducting value from the team’s bank just the same.
In its news release, NBC goes on to explain: “Because contestants compete in pairs, they must trust their loved ones to make the right decisions to rack up more earnings. In the end, teams are offered a contract that can dramatically impact their payout. Signing the contract forfeits the team’s bank in favor of a lower yet guaranteed payout equal to the Free Fall winnings and $20,000 for each question answered correctly in rounds 2 and 3.”
Led by comedian, actor and host Chris Hardwick (“Talking Dead”), this upcoming season promises more intense gameplay with some classic curveballs — like the superdrop — and another massive cash prize that could send some lucky winners home with millions in their pocket.
This season, according to NBC, “[even] more cash is up for grabs on ‘The Wall’ — but that means players have even more to lose.” In a game with high risk and high reward, it’s about the hope, the heartbreak and the life-changing effects of a little good luck.
“I think it’s the emotional journey that makes [‘The Wall’] different from other game shows,” host Hardwick told NBC’s King 5. “I do think that it is like a flashy game show with this really soft humanity center to it. Some of my most cynical comedian friends will text me at the end of a ‘Wall’ episode and be like, ‘Why am I crying at your game show?’”
With millions of dollars on the line, Season 6 of “The Wall” begins Monday, July 1, on NBC, with episodes streaming on Peacock the following day.
