Stroll looks to eradicate ‘pay driver’ status at Canadian Grand Prix

There’s no denying it: Lance Stroll is a rising talent on the track.

Born in Montreal, Stroll currently holds the record as the second-youngest driver to ever start a Formula One Grand Prix. He is the first Canadian F1 driver since Jacques Villeneuve in 1997.

As the son of billionaire businessman Lawrence Stroll, who is part owner of Aston Martin, Stroll has battled the label “Pay Driver” for much of his career while steered by his relentless thirst for speed.

Making his professional debut in 2017, Stroll joined Williams Grand Prix Engineering but trouble ensued after his debut season. The Williams FW41 was the slowest on the field that season, with the team finishing last in the Constructors Standings. His string of bad luck continued with a horrendous crash involving Brendan Hartley in the final lap of the Canadian Grand Prix; an early retirement due to a tire puncture at the French Grand Prix; and a brake failure at the German Grand Prix.

Stroll’s career has taken an upward trajectory since joining his father’s Aston Martin team in 2019. The Canadian is slowly evolving into a tour de force, earning his first pole position at the 2020 Turkish Grand Prix, as well as podium finishes in Monza and Sakhir.

Having proven himself over the past five seasons, Stroll currently sits in eighth place, 117 points behind Max Verstappen for the No. 1 spot in the Driver Standings. Despite a sub-par performance in Monaco earlier this year, Stroll will surely be looking for a strong performance at the Canadian Grand Prix, where a great performance on home soil could catapult his career higher than ever, and potentially silence some critics along the way.

A walk in the ‘City’: TWD does NYC in ‘Dead City’

The world of horror is pretty equally divided when it comes to fan preferences about the undead. Fast-moving versus slow-moving zombies is one of the most controversial debates of the genre, with fans in each camp planted resolutely in their beliefs as to which one is scarier and why. One new series, however, is dedicated to bridging the gap — or at least appealing to both sides of the argument — by introducing some fast walkers into a traditionally slow-moving zombie franchise.

“The Walking Dead: Dead City” is the newest addition to the TWD universe and it premieres Sunday, June 18, on AMC and AMC+. With four other series having already premiered (many of which have also concluded) in the franchise, including “Fear the Walking Dead,” “The Walking Dead: World Beyond,” “Tales of the Walking Dead” and the original, “The Walking Dead,” it only makes sense for the newest series, “Dead City,” to up the stakes a bit.

The series derives its name partly for the flagship series and graphic novel, and partly

from its unique setting. Despite most of the other TWD storylines taking place in relatively rural areas across the United States, “Dead City” follows two of the franchise’s most popular characters, Negan and Maggie (played, respectively, by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan of “Supernatural”) as they travel away from their familiar dwellings and into the wide, terrifying post-apocalyptic expanse of New York City in search of Maggie’s son, Herschel (Logan Kim, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” 2021). But just like everything else in the Big Apple, the walkers move a bit quicker.

“We’re in New York City,” said Scott M. Gimple, the original series’ former showrunner (seasons 4 to 8) and current chief content officer. “The tone of the story is a little different, the visuals are different.”

Collider also shared more information provided by Gimple, who appears to be keeping rather tight-lipped on the specifics to avoid giving spoilers.

“There are a number of horrific walkers, but there is a mind-bendingly horrific walker coming up that I wasn’t on set for, and I’m glad I wasn’t,” Gimple noted. “I got to experience the horrific magic at home, and it is magic. It quite possibly will make you throw up. I would just have something handy nearby as you watch it.”

But if gory walkers aren’t your bread and butter, fret not: there is plenty of very human drama to keep the plot rolling as well.

Don’t miss one of the most intricate, heart-wrenching and unsettling series in the TWD franchise to date. “The Walking Dead: Dead City” premieres Sunday, June 18, on AMC and AMC+. Q: Now that you’re in the 16th season of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” how do you feel about the vast variety of things you’ve been asked to do in your time on the show?

A: I get thrown out of windows. I come out of couches naked. I bleed all over everything. I’ve done everything. I mean, not everything … because there are probably going to be other things. If anybody thinks of anything that they want to see me do, you can write to (the producers), and if it’s outrageous enough, they’ll put it in the show.

Q: Has the era of political correctness made it tougher to do some of the bawdy humor the show is known for?

A: The main thing about that is respect. There’s funny and then there’s abusive. There’s jokes, and everybody kids each other about stuff – but when there’s the violation of personal space, then I think you’re in a big mess. To a certain degree, I don’t think I’ve ever changed anything. Women need to be heard and listened to and that’s great, but I really don’t feel like the majority of the comedians in the world who poke fun at themselves and each other are abusive. I don’t think that’s the case. There are rare cases of that, and they’ve come to the surface.

Q: What do you think the show has done for the reputation of Philadelphia?

A: I’m from New Jersey, a little bit outside of Philly, but wherever I go now – since the show’s been on and is very popular all over the world, basically – people will say to me things like, “Go Philly! Hey, Philly!” Something like that, you know. I think all the Philly people that I’ve encountered so far, no matter how base we are, they just think of it as kind of a cool thing and a feather in their cap. They like our show, I think. And we like Philly, too.

Q: I was watching the version of “The Three Musketeers” with Oliver Platt and realized I haven’t seen him in a while. Where did he get his start and where is he now?

A: It’s often the case that when we think a star has suddenly disappeared, it’s actually because they’re just on a show that, for some reason, we’re just not aware of.

And so, I’ll go ahead and assume you’re not a fan of the One Chicago franchise.

Since 2015, Oliver Platt (still best known, as you say, for playing Porthos in the 1993 adaptation of “The Three Musketeers”) has been busy starring as Dr. Daniel Charles on NBC’s “Chicago Med.” But since it’s part of the highly networked group of Chicago shows, that’s also included almost a season’s worth of appearances on “Chicago P.D.,” “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago Justice.”

Once a prolific big-screen supporting man, these shows have been taking up almost all of his time since.

It might not surprise you to learn that Platt, a chameleon with a big presence, got his start on the stage. He studied drama at Tufts University and did stage work in Massachusetts and, later, New York City. Hollywood soon came calling, via a part in 1988’s “Married to the Mob.”

Q: Is Chris Tucker not acting anymore? I haven’t seen him in ages.

A: While it’s true that we haven’t seen much of Chris Tucker (“Rush Hour,” 1998) lately, that’s about to change.

He plays a prominent role in the star-studded, true-life drama “Air,” streaming now on Prime Video — his first role in quite some time.

If you had asked me just a few months ago, I might have said that, yes, Chris Tucker had quit acting. His last film or TV role came back in 2016 — a supporting turn in the war drama “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.”

And the work had been sparse prior to that. Quite a change of pace from his heyday in the 1990s and early 2000s, when he was one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood, thanks to the success of the Rush Hour trilogy of buddy-cop blockbusters.

In fact, he’s appeared in just three things since “Rush Hour 3” in 2007.

It’s worth noting that none of those things was small-time. Along with the high-profile “Billy Lynn,” directed by the highly decorated Ang Lee, Tucker’s other two projects were a role in the Oscar-nominated “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012), and his own standup special on Netflix in 2015.

It’s unclear what Tucker will do now after “Air,” the dramatization of Nike’s pursuit of Michael Jordan as a spokesperson. There’s long been talk of a “Rush Hour 4,” which is listed as “in development” on IMDb, but nothing concrete has come of it so far.

A new episode from Season 17 follows the lives of Orange County housewives Tamra Judge, Heather Dubrow, Shannon Storms Beador, Gina Kirschenheiter, Emily Simpson and Jennifer Pedranti, and Vicki Gunvalson.

Nancy Drew WCIU 7 p.m.

Nancy (Kennedy McMann) unexpectedly comes across an old friend who is in town directing a horror film. Mysterious occurrences on the set raise concerns, prompting Ryan (Riley Smith) to volunteer his assistance to help Nancy navigate the eerie happenings.

LA Fire & Rescue WEEK WMAQ 7 p.m.

This docuseries premiere takes viewers to the frontlines of the Los Angeles County Fire Department to see how one of the country’s most impressive firefighting entities — covering 2,300 square miles — handles emergencies.

The Stroll HBO 8 p.m.

This 2023 documentary makes its debut, spotlighting the history of New York’s Meatpacking District, told from the perspective of transgender sex workers who lived and worked there, recounting the events that led to a movement for transgender rights.

Returning for its second year, “Juneteenth: A Global Celebration for Freedom” will broadcast live from The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Monday, June 19, airing for the first time in a dual simulcast between CNN and OWN.

The annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States, Juneteenth is now a nationally recognized holiday. Last year’s televised event was the first of its kind, a night featuring performances from acclaimed musical artists and icons, each playing in memorium and honor of the holiday. This year, the event recognizes Juneteeth’s 158th anniversary, with an initial list of performance artists including Miguel, Kirk Franklin, SWV, Davido, Coi Leray and Rodeci, with more expected to be announced. Grammy and Emmy winner Adam Blackstone and the co-founder of the Roots – Academy Award-winning filmmaker Questlove – are also set to headline as the evening’s musical directors.
