Jays, Bichette looking for better results in May after mediocre start

We’re only one month into the 2024 Major League Baseball season and all 30 teams have hit the ground running, including the Toronto Blue Jays. They prepare to visit the Washington Nationals for the first game in a three-game series Friday, May 3, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., with all the action airing live on AppleTV.

After what many believe was an underperforming season for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023, and having gone winless in six post-season games since 2020, this season brings a new sense of excitement and optimism as Jays shortstop Bo Bichette looks to step up in big ways.

“That’s the culture — to show up every day and be ready to do whatever we can to win a game. And that culture is built over a period of time of people holding each other accountable to that standard and that culture,” Bichette told the Toronto Sun. “That’s what we’re working on now.”

Last season, Bichette boasted an impressive .306 batting average, .399 slugging percentage, 20 home runs and 73 RBIs, with an improved defensive game going from -16 runs saved in 2022 to five runs saved in 2023. And by the time the all-star game rolled around, Bichette led the MLB in hits, while leading the American League in total bases, multi-hit home games and batting average — an allstar caliber season, to say the least.

While Bichette wasn’t available for the Blue Jays the last time they faced the Nationals, the Blue Jays dominated the Nats in their last matchup, with Vladamir Guerrero Jr. putting up two home runs and leading to the Jays walking away with a commanding 7-0 victory.

Love at 40: Hathaway, Galitzine get romantic in ‘The Idea of You’

There is something about a romantic comedy that uplifts the viewer like nothing else. Traditionally chronicling a quirky love story between two or more people, the genre often requires its audience to suspend disbelief just enough to open their hearts and allow for a bit of movie magic. Thankfully, as spring heats up and prepares to head into summer, Prime Video has a new rom-com to suit the seasonal mood.

“The Idea of You,” premiering Thursday, May 2, on Prime, puts just enough of a twist on the rom-com genre to leave moviegoers feeling fresh this spring. Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by actress and author Robinne Lee (“Fifty Shades Freed,” 2018), “The Idea of You” stars Anne Hathaway (“Interstellar,” 2014) as 40-something French-American single mother Solène, who hits it off with 24-yearold pop star Hayes Campbell, played by “Cinderella’s” (2021) Nicholas Galitzine, when she accidentally walks into his trailer

while accompanying her teen daughter to Coachella.

While, at surface level, the book (and its subsequent film) may appear to be a simple rom-com featuring a so-called “May-December romance,” in 2020, Vogue called the then three-year-old novel a “socio-cultural commentary about aging and a woman’s worth.”

“I wanted to write a novel that challenged certain myths,” Lee said in a 2017 interview. “[The myths] that female sexuality ceases to exist after we hit middle age; that having kids makes us no longer sexually attractive or viable; that women at a certain point in their lives — the point where they should be at their strongest and most prolific — become invisible.”

And after spending what is now more than a quarter-century in Hollywood herself, Lee says she feels much of that pressure herself, adding in a later interview with Vogue that sometimes “you want to just live the way you’ve lived when you were in college, or your early twenties when you have freedom and you never have to think of anyone but yourself.”

Solène definitely has a certain element of the carefree about her, but that side of Hathaway’s character plays counterpoint to a very grounded, much more mature sense of duty brought on by being a single mom and high-powered working woman in the art world. Although Solène’s daughter, Izzy (Ella Rubin, “The Chair”), is older than in the book, the pair still encounter a fair bit of awkwardness regarding Solène’s famous young love, who is closer to her daughter’s age than her own.

Of course, it doesn’t help matters that Hayes, as the lead singer of the uber-popular boy band August Moon, constantly draws attention to his and Solène’s relationship just by being insanely famous.

Q: During the recent tribute night to Ryan O’Neal on Turner Classic Movies, several mentions of “Peyton Place” were made. Can you tell me what that was?

A: It was a television series that brought initial fame to O’Neal before his 1970 movie performance as Oliver Barrett IV in “Love Story” took his popularity to an even higher level. Based on a best-selling novel by Grace Metalious about a scandal-ridden town, “Peyton Place” had been made into a 1957 movie first, then it was turned into a prime-time serial that ABC aired

several times weekly for a while. It started in 1964 with two new episodes per week, then went to three episodes in 1965 and then back to two, until it ultimately was reduced to one episode weekly toward the end of its run in 1969.

O’Neal was cast as Rodney Harrington, whose romance with Allison MacKenzie (Mia Farrow) helped make O’Neal a darling of fan magazines. Rodney already had a girlfriend in Betty Anderson (Barbara Parkins), generating a love triangle that certainly captured public interest. Farrow left the show after a couple of seasons to pursue a film career that notably included the 1968 thriller “Rosemary’s Baby.”

For O’Neal, “Peyton Place” was a longer job, and he stayed just about until the end of its run. He had made the movie “The Big Bounce” (1968) with fellow “Peyton Place” co-star — and, for several years, wife — Leigh Taylor-Young while he was still on the show, but his subsequent film “The Games” (1970) had even bigger significance to his career. It was written by Erich Segal, also the writer of “Love Story”; he suggested O’Neal for the latter picture, which couldn’t have hurt in terms of the actor landing the Oliver role.

Q: Now that Theo James is busy with the “Gentlemen” show, does that mean he’s not coming back to the “Divergent” film series?

A: Unfortunately, it looks like there’s no “Divergent” film series to come back to.

Theo James, currently famous for playing the lead in Netflix’s new gangster series “The Gentlemen,” was a relative unknown when the “Divergent” film series changed his life. He was cast as Four, one of the central characters of the teen-oriented sci-fi film “Divergent” (2014), based on a popular book series by author Veronica Roth. It was a huge hit, and two

“Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” (May 4, Limited Series Premiere) e force is with Star Wars fans once again. Lucas lm’s new animated follow-up series to “Tales of the Jedi” acts as the second installment of the “Tales” series. is six-episode miniseries adventures “into the fearsome Galactic Empire through the eyes of two warriors on divergent paths, set during di erent eras” (per Disney+), as Morgan Elsbeth (voiced by Diana Lee Inosanto, “Ahsoka”) has lost everything, and is now heading down a path of vengeance. Meanwhile, former Jedi Barriss O ee (Meredith Salenger, “ e Prank,” 2022) does whatever it takes to survive in their rapidly changing galaxy.

sequels quickly followed — “The Divergent Series: Insurgent” (2015) and “Allegiant” (2016).

A fourth movie was planned (there were only three books, but in a move that has become popular for these sorts of films, they planned to split the third book across two installments), but “Allegiant” underperformed at the box office, so those plans have been scrapped.

That means, however, that the film series ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and that seems unlikely to be resolved at this point, eight years on.

As you point out, the stars

have moved on. James has another huge hit on his hands with “The Gentlemen,” which was the No. 1 original show on Netflix for weeks after its early March release. And the show’s producers already have ideas for a Season 2, which Netflix is likely to want to do as well.

The “Divergent” films’ other star, Shailene Woodley (“The Fault in Our Stars,” 2014), has a flourishing film and television career of her own. She has since starred in HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” Showtime’s “Three Women” and the high-profile biographical film “Ferrari” (2023), among many other projects.

Q: I love the actress who plays Michelle Mackey on “NCIS: Sydney.” Where else can I see her?

A: There’s really just one other place. Prior to helping launch “NCIS: Sydney” in 2023, Olivia Swann was a lead character on “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” for three years, from 2019 to 2022.

She played Astra Logue, a character with the kind of wild backstory that’s typical for a comic book show. She was accidentally banished to Hell, where she eventually took over to become Queen while also wreaking havoc back on one version of Earth. (I told you it was wild.)

That really was her star-making turn, and other than that she hasn’t been in much.

She had a role in the direct-to-streaming drama “River Wild” last year and has done single episodes of a couple of British shows (“Doctors” in 2018 and “The Break” last year).

Those last two items might seem surprising if you don’t know that Swann, who plays an American investigator working in Australia on “NCIS: Sydney,” is actually from neither of those countries — she’s from England. She said she enjoys all the traveling that has come with being a TV star. “I do not have a problem uprooting and going somewhere else for work, so having the opportunity to move to Sydney for five months and film was a dream come true,” she told New Zealand’s Stuff magazine.

“NCIS: Sydney” is the first international edition of the hugely popular CBS procedural franchise, and the fifth version overall (after the original one and three other location-based spinoffs in “Los Angeles,” “New Orleans” and “Hawaii”). It’s already been renewed for a second season.

Wrexham returns: It’s not ‘always sunny’ in ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Season 3

The American football season may be over, but the English football season sure isn’t. It’s time to get back into cheering for everyone’s favorite underdog when Season 3 of the Emmy-winning docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham” premieres Tuesday, May 2, on FX and streams Wednesday, May 3, on Hulu.

Though Season 2 of the series led by Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool,” 2016) and Rob McElhenney (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) only concluded late last year, Wrexham fans and football enthusiasts will be treated with an all-new season of club drama, triumph and turmoil as this third season will break from “Welcome to Wrexham’s” usual release schedule (airing after the year’s season concludes), instead airing alongside the end of the 2023-24 English football season, which will be ongoing until late May.

The series, which follows Reynolds and McElhenney’s stewardship of the Wrexham football club, located in North East Wales, last saw the duo and the Red Dragons returning to the English Football League following an arduous battle to be promoted from the National League, and will now

continue as the team begins its first return season in the EFL.

Before the (official) games begin, Season 3’s premiere episode follows Wrexham AFC and their stalwart captains as they head to America to play a series of summer friendlies. Their return to the league, however, is met with a less-than-friendly welcome from other teams, adding to the team’s already-mounting pressure. With new players taking to the pitch and a shocking departure to boot, Wrexham, Rob and Ryan all struggle to find their footing in the big leagues but do their best to train, improve and assimilate throughout the season.
