A ‘willingness to help other people’

“I was really satisfied with how everybody worked together. I was really proud of the results,” Weyer, a Marquette High School senior, said regarding the service project he lead at the park while pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout a couple of years ago.

Weyer’s drive for excellence has become noticed by several people, including Tom Ditchfield, Scout master of Troop 744, who has been working with Angelo for nearly six years through scouting.

Family atmosphere stands out at Streator Children’s Clinic

Going to the pediatrician’s office can sometimes be daunting. It involves thoughts of getting shots, awkward talks about puberty, and saying “ahhhhh” when you think you might have strep throat.

Yet, Dr. San Gabriel strives to make children’s trips to her office a positive rather than a scary one.

Coming originally from the Philippines and after completing a pediatric residency in Chicago, Dr. San Gabriel came in 2001 as a pediatrician and the proprietor of the Streator Children’s Clinic. She immediately felt blessed to have been welcomed by the community.

When it comes to treating her patients, she sees them as members of her extended family.

In turn, she hopes to recreate that same family atmosphere in her office.

As they enter the clinic, parents and patients are greeted with warm and familiar faces.

“If there’s one thing the kids don’t forget is there’s something waiting for them at the end of the visit,” Dr. San Gabriel said. “As soon as they’re done, they jump out of the room and head to the basket of suckers! At least we end their visit on a happy note!”

The same staff worked at the clinic before she took over Dr. Mooss’ pediatric practice.

Though a few have retired, Dr. San Gabriel filled those positions with Streator locals who are closely tied to the community.

Keady Gillman, one of the original staff, is the office manager; Jessica Garcia also joins Keady at the front desk; Rosa Chavez, RN; and Earlene York, CNA assists Dr. San Gabriel as the seasoned clinical staff. Everyone, however, is cross-trained so anyone can pitch in to help.

Communication and efficiency plays a vital part in the clinic. Dr. San Gabriel and her staff understand that their patient’s time is important.

The office utilizes current technology to improve accessibility and contact with parents.

As Dr. San Gabriel suggests, “Parents are an important part of the process.

Their children’s physical and emotional health begins at home and continues as part of a collaborative effort in our office. We work as a team!”

Parents are encouraged to ask Dr. San Gabriel questions and she does her best to answer, “especially to clear their worries about what they read on the internet!”

As members of the same team, doctor, staff, parents and family grow into a tight-knit family.

At times, Dr. San Gabriel says it’s bittersweet to see a lifelong patient move on after high school. Although she now sees patients until they’re 21 years old, she takes pride in knowing she was a part of her patients’ families as she watches them grow from newborn babies to mature young

men and women as they are ready to make their mark on the world.

“I do get a kick witnessing that! That feeling never gets old,” Dr. San Gabriel said.

Also one of the most enjoyable experiences in her work is to see her patients becoming parents themselves, returning to her office with children of their own.

Anthony’s longtime President and Vice President Thomas and Jeremy Walker have announced that it is now an independent company; it will operate separately from the PMW Holding company that it had been a part of for more than 20 years. This was a recent change that took effect Jan. 1, 2020.

The two brothers, along with their other brothers, have managed Anthony since 1982, reviving the liftgate business from the late1970s financial woes of former equipment industry heavyweight,

Anthony Company.

PMW had contained up to five manufacturing businesses, jointly held, at one time, by up to 12 members of the Walker family, with each business entity operated separately by five brothers.

Other recent holdings of PMW include Streator Dependable Manufacturing, U.S. Truck Body, Brave Products Company, and Mushro Machine and Tool, all of Streator, Illinois, with a combined total of around 400 employees.

“As the fourth generation decided to join the family businesses, they brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm, but with that came more complexity. It became apparent that our best course of action was to first sell two businesses outright, then to

split those remaining according to their respective managers, and all go separate ways,” said Thomas Walker, noting that this acquisition marks the final step in a multi-year plan to focus their efforts as a result of extensive succession planning.

Weyer:‘Angelo’s always willing to take some of the younger Scouts under his wing’ From page A1 He noted that Weyer’s community service project was one of the largest Eagle Scout projects he has seen, with 30 to 40 people coming together to work on the park on three different occasions.

“I think the thing that stands out to me is his willingness to help other people,” Ditchfield said. “We count on the older Scouts to help the younger Scouts.

The parents can’t do it all.

The leaders can’t do it all.

Angelo’s always willing to take some of the younger Scouts under his wing, mentor them as they progress in scouting. And the younger Scouts really look up to Angelo when they see what he’s done, what he’s accomplished. And his willingness to help them, you can’t beat it when an older teenager will help you and you’re a 12-year-old. ... It’s very powerful and it helps keep the kids in Scouts.”

Weyer has proven himself both in school and in his community throughout his high school career according to his science teacher, Kathryn Ewers. She uses the words driven, above and beyond, integrity, involved and good time management when describing him.

Ewers, who serves as the World Youth in Science and Engineering Program adviser said she is always telling her students that it’s not enough to get good grades.

It’s important to stand out amongst their peers who are competing for placement in college programs. And she said Weyer has taken that message to heart.

Ewers recounts Weyer and two other students on her WYSE Team competing last year in sectionals for the opportunity to represent Marquette at state. The other two students advanced; however Weyer did not.

“Instead of being discouraged about not placing and going to state, as soon as we got back in the car he said, ‘Hey you guys, I know you

I’m so happy for you,’ ” Ewers said. “And I thought that was so mature ... he was so gracious for his peers.”

Weyer hopes to take what he’s learned through school and scouting and study at the Air Force Academy, where he is waiting for admission results. Having a grandfather who served in the Army and uncle who served in the Navy, he said the Air Force has appealed to him since he was a child.

“It’s like a torch of service being passed down from

family member to family member, and I saw that torch being passed down to me. And I wanted to do it in a unique way through the Air Force,” he said.

“When you are thinking about service, then you’re thinking a lot about putting what you have towards something greater than yourself,” he said. “There’s a reason that you are doing all this. That reason for me is to help benefit others.

And the way I saw to benefit others is to serve an entire nation.”

“My main goal was to increase membership,” she said.

She knew if she could get word out about what Key Club was about — the projects and how they helped people — she could get more students interested.

She designed promotional posters to hang around the school, she set up a Facebook page, posted on Twitter and Snapchat — anywhere students went, she got word out.

Married for more than 35 years, Steve and Pam Shanley loved their life together, working and raising three children in Ottawa for decades.

But they also shared a strong affection for the quaint village of Utica, where they often came to visit Starved Rock or to enjoy a night out in one of the village’s many restaurants.

“Five people wasn’t enough to make a big impact,” Shannon said. “Now with 30 members, we have the numbers to do plenty of projects.”

And the Key Club stays busy, from organizing a homeless sleep-out event to raise money for the Public Action to Deliver Shelter in Ottawa, to volunteering Shannon at the CenPaton tral Church of Christ’s Night to Shine prom for special needs students and helping with Christmas shopping for children during Shop with a Cop, among many other activities.

“The main reason I do what I do is to help people grow,” Shannon said. “It helps me grow.”

Reviving the Key Club from relative inactivity to a bustling service organization gave her confidence.

“I’m proud of myself,” she said. “I’m proud of all the people coming to the meetings.”

Shannon has a love for organizing events.

She took the lead in coordinating the district convention in Iowa with more than 700 attendees.

She started working on putting together the event beginning last January that was scheduled to happen March 12, until it was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The convention serves as a recap for the past year.

It’s an event where Key Club members recite ac-

“It was a good way for club members to volunteer, either by setting up the dance or selling tickets,” she said. “It was very rewarding at the end.”

Shannon hopes the dance will be an annual activity for students and a fundraiser for St. Jude.

Her knack for bringing people together led her to become the school’s social media coordinator through the work program.

She attends sporting events, club events, foods classes and several other activities around the school, getting photographs and posting messages on the school’s social media sites.

“A big part of my job is to spread all the positive things our school has to offer,” Shannon said.

The job is fitting, because she wants to work in public relations after graduating college and possibly help set up a nonprofit organization.

She’s verbally committed to play soccer for Lincoln College. On top of Key Club, she’s in Spanish Club, S-Club and Superfans Club, among others.

She joined Key Club her freshman year following in her sister’s footsteps.

Her sophomore year, she decided she wanted to be more active in it, so she joined the district board and served as lieutenant governor for the district, overseeing Streator, Ottawa, Marquette, La SallePeru and Woodland Key Clubs.

Her participation in Key Club has helped her grow as a leader, she said.

“Being involved has helped shape who I am today,” she said.

“If it was with my iPod or whatever, just making videos,” the La Salle Peru High School senior said. “I was always the kid if we had a school project I’d go all out with it.”

It was when his friend and neighbor, Matthew Klein, got a drone in 2017 when his hobby really came into focus.

“I thought it was so cool, so I had to get one and next thing you know we’re actually using the camera on it and that’s when we started to post stuff and then when it really took

“Everything nowadays is coming to video and we understand social media,” Petersen said. “Businesses and cities are reaching out to us for that reason.”

Since then, they’ve kept busy working for cities and businesses shooting promotional videos.

“I love the connections and experiences that come along with doing this,” he said.

He said he recently visited a city to shoot video for an event he had never heard of.

He enjoyed the experience of learning about a new event and that, in a way, shooting videos is like having a backstage pass. He goes behind the scenes to get his shots.

“If I wasn’t doing any of this I’d probably just be sitting in my room playing video games or something,” he said. “I get to learn things. I think the whole process of bettering my skills and learning new things is invaluable.”

He’s also seen his footage used on national television. A few months ago the History Channel aired an episode of “American Pickers” filmed at the shuttered Herrcke’s Hardware in La Salle. He was watching the episode from his home the night it aired and saw footage of a city of La Salle sign that looked familiar, like a shot he had taken.

“I was watching it and that’s the same angle, the same colors, spoke length, everything,” he said.

He called Klein and they watched it again and both agreed it looked like same.

The network had purchased the footage, but the payment hadn’t gone through. Petersen had no idea the clip was going to be used.

“The fact that my equipment and skills were good enough to be on national television is pretty cool,” he said.

The L-P senior also gives his talents to his school by live-streaming sporting events and editing a podcast earlier in the year. He also shot a hype video for the football team in the fall.

After high school, he plans to attend a four-year college or Illinois Valley Community College with a transfer later. He plans to focus his studies on video production.

He recently started his own business, Kyle Petersen Visuals, offering video and photo production.

Matthew Klein said he is excited everyone gets to see more of his talent now that he’s branched out.

“I think it’s something he’s really excited about and it’s something I think a lot of people have been

wanting him to do for a while,” Klein said of Petersen’s new venture.

“It’s nice to see it online.

Normally, we would just share stuff on my Facebook page, but now it’s nice where he has a place to share his content,” he said, noting a video Petersen posted the night before already has more than 5,000 views on Facebook.

Klein appreciates the perspective Petersen brings to projects. Sometimes Klein said he would shoot something and wouldn’t be satisfied.

“But then Kyle will say, ‘All right, maybe you should switch up this a little or you should switch it to this.’

Then it’s like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s a great idea,’ ” Klein said.

Klein is attending IVCC and appreciates how Petersen’s high school schedule doesn’t hold him back.

Klein said Petersen sometimes gets up before school to do homework, meets him after school and works late with him on projects.

“So he’s up from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. in some cases, so he’s very determined, very hardworking.”

True Kempiak

Ann Hoffmann, Serena High School assistant principal, who was sitting in on an interview with True, said: “There’s always a Kempiak.”

But not for long.

A Wedron resident, 18-year-old True Kempiak is wrapping up her senior year, but can’t always be found at Serena High.

Four days a week, Kempiak takes afternoon Certified Nursing Associate classes at Indian Valley Vocational Center in Sandwich. Every Thursday, she works at a Yorkville health care facility as part of the IVVC program, baby-sits and does volunteer

work on the side.

“I usually nap on the bus,” Kempiak said. “It was a little weird getting used to (my schedule) in the beginning.

Now it’s natural.”

Next year she will be in college studying nursing.

She became interested in the CNA program after seeing a flyer about it and attending an information session, both at Serena. Also, a friend participated in the program last year.

By the end of the spring, Kempiak will be eligible to take the state board examination and become a CNA. Before it’s over, she will have accumulated 40 hours of clinical time and more than 100 hours of theory, said Michelle Cottinghm, IVCC course instructor.

“This class is intense at times. However, I have no doubt she will be successful and finish well,” Cottinghm said of Kempiak. “She is by far one of my best students,

and is a leader quite naturally without being asked.”

Among Kempiak’s nursing home duties are feeding, dressing, and cleaning residents and helping them with range of motion exercises.

She likes being able to help residents and hear their stories.

“We had a lot of bookwork to do in the beginning. It’s easy once you get used to it,” Kempiak said about her IVVC studies.

The CNA course involves 2 1/2 hours of study four days a week, and three hours of clinical work Thursdays.

Napping or not, Kempiak boards a bus after her classes end at 11:15 a.m., then is at the vocational center noon to 2:30 p.m.

She said the Kempiak era will not be over at Serena, since she has niece and nephews who attend Unit 2 schools.

Ottawa Chamber redirects focus to more effective partnerships The Ottawa Area Chamber of Commerce is a dynamic business organization working to advance the economic and civic interests of the Ottawa area.

The chamber has redirected its focus as it has changed staffing. Jeff Hettrick has taken over as executive director after Boyd Palmer’s retirement, and Kristal Nodland has consolidated responsibilities as the office coordinator.

The core business focus of the chamber has shifted to more effective partnerships with regional organizations.

Working together with the city of Ottawa, La Salle County, the Ottawa Visitors Center, local chambers and regional economic development groups boost the reach of what the chamber can accomplish.

“As an example, regional chambers can speak for 2,000 member businesses instead of just 400 Ottawa companies. Together we demonstrate a united effort on business issues,” said Jeff Hettrick, executive director.

“I needed a break. I figured with the CNA class I wouldn’t have a lot of time,” she said.

Chad Baker taught Kempiak in math courses her freshman and junior years at Serena. “… She always came to class with a smile on her face and a friendly ‘hello’ as she entered class. She consistently had her work completed, and was conscientious that it was completed with quality. She showed leadership in the classroom by helping others and also not being afraid to ask a question other students would hesitate to ask,” he said.

English and Language Arts instructor Angie Pippenger has taught Kempiak as a sophomore and senior.

“True is often willing to volunteer to try something new. Regularly in (public speaking class) we play improv games to practice different speech skills and to have a bit of fun. She regularly volunteers to play and participate in various ways.

“One of the things I enjoy the most about True is her overall personality compiled of friendliness, a good sense of humor, and honesty.”

Outside of school, Kempiak enjoys fishing and attending Major League Baseball games. She also helps make packages for Feed My Starving Children, an Aurora-based

organization; volunteers at Illinois Valley Public Action to Deliver Shelter, cleaning up after meals and talking with kids at the Ottawa facility; and cleans up highways once a year as school project.

“I just like helping people,” Kempiak said.

“Besides being a terrific student in the classroom, True’s best qualities might be outside of the classroom,” Baker said.

“She treats all students and teachers with respect, helps fellow students that other high school students may ignore, and goes out of her way to lend a hand in any way she can.

“She has volunteered at shelters and resale shops, cleaned houses for friends and family, and sent care packages to students in need.She speaks to people of all ages, instead of acting scared or awkward, which is common in students of her age. All in all, she is a very well-rounded young woman whom I am very proud to know.”

Kempiak plans to attend a small college and study neonatal or delivery room nursing. Ultimately she would like to work at a hospital or clinic close to her home, which could be in Starved Rock Country or the Chicago suburbs.

She has mixed feelings about finishing her studies at Serena.

“I’m getting a little sad that I won’t be coming here.

But I’m excited about new opportunities in college. It will be nice to stay in one place and meet new people,” Kempiak said.

For the last of the Kempiak siblings, the next step will be a new start.

“When we were thinking about starting this business after a fire closed the previous store in this location, Steve and I were just planning to open up a gift shop, but a friend suggested we add

wine sales to it,” explained Pam. “And, so it kind of took off from there.”

Steve estimated the shop, opened in June 2016, now has nearly 1,000 bottles of wine in-house with 40 different varieties representing many of the 135 wineries in Illinois as well as selections from around the world.

The shop’s growing “claim to fame” is the daily special of five vino tastings for $5.

“We have learned a lot in the past year about wine and what sells best in our little shop,” said Steve. “And we have a huge selection of craft, foreign and domestic beer, including a gluten-free brew.”

Manager Cindy Trench will be your friendly tour guide at Clarks Run Creek Wine.

Trench is knowledgeable about all types of wine and can help guide customers through the wine tasting experience. She invites all to enjoy their wine selection on the patio or in the upstairs loft.

“I am loving this job and I enjoy greeting the visitors who come through the door,” said Trench. “I’m looking forward to the upcoming spring/ summer tourist season and meeting even more new customers. We’re planning to sponsor some new and exciting events to attract the locals not just to entertain our out-of-town guests.”
