Swanson uses poetry to process emotions Ottawa High student publishes trio of books BRENT BADER bbader@shawmedia.com 815-431-4045 Healing is often connected to hospitals or treated with medicine, but what about healing through words? That’s what Shaylee Swanson has done through poetry shared both in class and with others. And Shaylee isn’t just keeping these poems within her close circle of friends — she’s collected them and published two books, with a third on the way. “They kind of go through my journey as a teenager dealing with anxiety and depression and kind of finding myself and figuring myself, (such as) dealing with sexuality and going through that process,” Shaylee said.

Ottawa High School student Shaylee Swanson, 17, has published two poetry books reflecting her emotions and experiences in high school. Swanson said part of their creation was about showing other students that “they’re not alone” with their own emotions and questions.
