Cruise Night tradition continues for 19th year The Times Staff One of the state’s largest collections of vintage vehicles will hit Streator on Labor Day weekend. The annual Streator Car Show and Cruise Night, sponsored by the Dream Machines Car Club, is Saturday, Sept. 1. Roamer Cruise Night — named for the automobile manufactured 100 years ago in Streator — will occupy downtown streets 5 to 10 p.m. Registration will be 3 to 7 p.m. on the south side of City Park.
Chad Irving, of the Dream Machines Car Club, said 500 cars registered last year. That’s a typical number for the show, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year. The event attracts thousands of visitors. Vendors of all kinds will line downtown streets. Registration is 3 to 7 p.m. in the south side of City Parkl. Cost is $10. All cruisers must enter the cruise route through the staging area. Golf carts, gokarts, stock cars and trailers are not allowed in the cruise. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 2.

Car show returns prior to cruise night The Times Staff
Before checking out the cars cruising, check out the show. The car show will begin with registration 9 a.m. to noon, followed by the show, noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at City Park in downtown Streator. Last year, the car show had 152 entries, said Chad Irving, of the Dream Machines Car Club. Registration is $15. The car shows allows visitors to walk around the park and check out cars at a more leisurely pace than the cruise, which moves to Main Street among the crowds and allows vehicles to cruise the streets. More than 70 awards will be given in multiple classifications. The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 2. For more information, call 815-822-7883 or 815-992-3723.

The 19th annual Roamer Cruise Night and Car Show is this weekend in downtown Streator on Main Street. The event brings more than 600 restored and antique cars and features its namesake 1917 Roamer automobile. The schedule for the weekend is as follows: u 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31: Len and Lois will perform easy listening tunes at Heritage Park — the corner of Main and Monroe streets — as part of Streator’s “Jammin’ at the Clock” summer concert series. u 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31: Stars and Stripes Sock Hop at Streator Incubator, 401 W. Bridge St. Snacks and beverages available for purchase. Music by the Valley Katz and DJ Don Topolski. Costume and dance contest. Free, but donations accepted. It’s parade time in Streator The Times Staff The Labor Day parade will step off at noon Sunday, Sept. 2. from City Park. The parade will wind downtown west on Main Street, starting at Illinois Street, and end at the northwest corner of City Park after turning north on Park Street. The parade include floats, music and representation from
state and local businesses and organizations. According to the Streator Area Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who sponsors the event, about 15 to 20 entries have come in so far, but most come in at the last minute. Lineup begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Santa Fe Depot on Illinois Street. Units must be decorated unless it is an antique, classic
vehicle or farm implement. The chamber asks those distributing candy to not throw from moving vehicles, instead opting for walkers to distribute the candy. The Dream Machines Car Club, which puts on the cruise night and car show, is raffling off a restored 1963 Chevy Nova or $5,000 cash for a $10 donation, with drawing at conclusion of Cruise Night. Winners need not be present, and participants must be age 18 and older and will be responsible for all applicable taxes, license and title.
When the Chevy Nova was introduced ...
Chevrolet manufactured the Nova from 1962 through 1979, as well as the 1985 to 1988 model years. Car Life magazine dubbed the vehicle “a return to sensibility in terms of basic transportation; it is a car of reasonable size, adequate performance and simple elegance” when the model first hit the market. The Nova claimed Car Life’s Award for Engineering Excellence. In 1963, the Nova received a mixed review from Consumer Reports, which wrote, “New last year, the (Nova) has not yet developed into a smooth-riding, quiet, or in any sense luxurious car. It is an easy driving, agile one. By far its most important asset is a body with substantially the room of intermediate cars, but with a very compact silhouette and especially good entrance height.” By 1965, the Chevy Nova was accepted among the ranks of muscle cars.

Roamer Cruise Night marks end of sesquicentennial celebrations Closing ceremony to include closing 2018 time capsule The Times Staff This weekend’s events mark the end of Streator’s 150th anniversary celebration.
The Sesquicentennial Closing Ceremony is at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2. at City Park. It will include a short program and closing of the 2018 time capsule.
The opening of the time capsule will be set for April 8, 2043. Committee members collected items to be placed in the capsule that will have interest to those in the future. The committee accepted donations relating to this year’s
celebration, current events, or things of timely interest that may be obsolete in 2043. Letters or gifts to loved ones, as well as promotional items from local businesses were encouraged to be placed in the capsule. Donations are no longer being accepted. The capsule opened this year had several letters placed by parents and grandparents of children in 1993 that were
returned to the family after the opening in April. It also included a registration book for events in 1993, commemorative plates, a letter to the “mayor of 2018,” commemorative coins and newspapers. Contents of the time capsule that was buried in 1993 and opened at the beginning of this year’s celebration in April are now on display at Midland Bank at 201 E. Main St. in the window of the foyer.
