Bradley seeks splendor at Sawgrass in 2023 Players Championship

With the PGA Tour losing a number of golfers to LIV Golf, the field for this year’s Players Championship will be missing many its top finishers from 2022, including winner Cameron

Keegan Bradley, this is your opportunity. the tournament dubbed golf ’s unofficial fifth major last year, the 36-year-old Vermont native came into the final day at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., near the top of the leaderboard. In fact, he was one shot from the lead after a birdy on the 16th hole. But then came No. 17.

The infamous island hole has laid waste to many a golfer’s North Florida’s swirling March winds tend to deposit many a 140-yard tee shot in the surrounding water. Only on this day, it wasn’t the wind that did Bradley in so much as poor putting. After sticking the landing on the green, he proceeded to three-putt the hole.

That was followed by a double bogey on No. 18 lowlighted punch shot from the trees that found water. And like that, were dashed as Smith went on to his second victory of 2022 and Bradley wound up fifth, his best career finish on the Stadium Course.

Jennifer Nettles is down on the farms in reality-show revival

As her celebrated career in music continues, Jennifer Nettles has been building another one in unscripted television.

A winner of many awards (including Grammys) as a member of country music’s Sugarland, Nettles also is a solo artist, and she has extended her brand by serving as a judge on the series “Duets” and “Go-Big Show.” She potentially expands her reach again by playing host as four rural men seek mates from city-based prospects in a Fox revival of “Farmer Wants a Wife,” premiering Wednesday, March 8.

Originated in England, “Farmer Wants a Wife” has yielded a number of international versions, the first U.S. one having aired on The CW in 2008. The friendly Nettles admits that reality television is “not my favorite genre, so I’m super-selective about the projects I choose. This one really stood out to me because it’s so different. Everyone who’s involved gets a chance to really look at everyone else, so it’s authentic, and that’s what I appreciate.”

Deeming herself a “storyteller” no matter which aspect of her work she focuses on, Nettles believes that “Farmer Wants a Wife” also fulfills that designation for her. She calls it “a television fairy tale. It’s really heartwarming to see these folks who are out there looking for love ... and who doesn’t love a love story? That’s what really

time, and for people who are in it for the right reasons. ”

Explaining that she’s much more involved directly with the farmers on the show than with the women who are candidates to become their wives, Nettles likens her “Farmer Wants a Wife” role to that of “a fairy godmother, in a ‘mentor’ sort of way, to help them through this process. It is quite intimidating, I think, for them to take on a task like opening up their hearts and making themselves vulnerable – and doing it while cameras are around.”

Also an actress, having starred on Broadway in “Chicago” and “Waitress” and having made a couple of Dolly Parton-inspired NBC holiday movies, Nettles maintains that music remains the strongest part of her professional mix. Her most recent solo album was the 2021 cover-version collection “Always Like New,” and she maintains that she isn’t certain when she might reteam with Sugarland partner Kristian Bush again.

“There are lots of ways to tell stories,” Nettles reflects, who also has been making a movie in Atlanta lately. “While music is obviously my first love, I’ve been expanding over the past 10 years into TV and film and theater. That’s mostly been on the scripted side, but it’s fun to do unscripted things, too. It’s all worked out

This is your first stint as an executive producer. How do you like being a boss?

Well, I confess I felt quite content just with the acting. However, it is quite a privilege to get a chance to make a difference in your performance and the kind of story you want to tell when you can have access to the dailies and conversations with writers about tone. And being a producer certainly affords you more time for that.

What did you draw on to create your lunar timeshare salesman character of Jack?

PUZZLE SOLUTIONS

It was more, I suppose, theological in a weird way. He has organized himself around the belief that capitalism is a religion. It is a way to explain the confusing aspect of living. So if you aren’t fully trusting in your pastor or haven’t been given enough hope by the philosophers, perhaps if you invest in an idea of a fantasy of a future, your life will be at the very least enjoyable. And there’s a part of that that is committing to a thought, which is not dissimilar to religion. Jack really believes wholeheartedly that the new version of the Veg-oDice, which chops your onions for you, is going to materially make your life better. That in fact, just the idea of a timeshare on the moon is going to make your day-to-day existence materially more enjoyable. And I think what he really wants is to be an impact in people’s lives. ...

And so when you convince yourself as an actor, what you’re accessing there is your imagination. So it’s truly an imaginative process to go, “What really makes Jack get out of bed in the morning?” And in this case, it’s providing somebody he doesn’t know with a little bit of hope.

How was it joining a wellestablished series such as “Wicked Tuna”?

It was really cool. It was great. Everybody was amazing and it was just surreal, I guess. It was a blast being in Gloucester and it was fun, a lotta lotta fun.

Had you fished that fishery before?

Not often. It was the year before that I went down for the first time and went into the river. Other than that, no. The waters off of Gloucester, I did a

little bit because it’s not too far from where I am. If the fish are down there, sometimes I’ll make the extra trip.

How much of a learning curve did you have?

It’s definitely different. You know, where I go you’re more on edges, like humps off of New Hampshire. You’ve got like a lot of hills underwater whereas Gloucester you’re kind of on an edge. So I mean, yeah, it’s not too different. I went down to the Cape this year and that is completely different. Wow. Different in so many ways. And

that you basically have to learn a whole new fisher y.

Was there a big adjustment to having cameras and camerapeople on the boat?

That’s tough because I was worried about that just even coming on the show, just the camera thing, and interviews and doing basically exactly what I’m doing, I had a lot of anxiety So it definitely was tough, it was challenging but I basically had to just put it out of my head that the camera was right there.

In assuming the role played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1994 movie version of “True Lies,” do you have any desire to channel him into your performance?

I said that I would never, out of respect for the man, do the impersonation. I’ve never done it, not once, and I never will. It’s an iconic actor and an iconic man, and it’s an iconic film.

We just wanted to do something on our own, you know? We couldn’t mirror the movie. We didn’t want to do it exactly. We wanted to bring our own flair, and I think we did.

Because of the nature of the show that it is, “True Lies” involves a lot of different aspects. How has it been for you to play all of that?

This action/drama/comedy, the elements that we were doing, all the cast dreamt about doing something like this ... so while we were doing it, it was like, “We’re doing it. This is amazing.”

But it’s so much work. I don’t even know how to say it, but we were supporting each other, and it was fun. We had laughs and tears and broken bones, all of the above.

How did you deal with all of that during those long work days?

Well, I think you have to compartmentalize, especially if you have a family. My kids were in L.A. and I was in Atlanta. We were in Atlanta for five months, so that was tough – but, you know, Daddy had to be an action star. So that was the priority.

Actually, I saw the pilot with my son, and he was very complimentar y. He said, “You’re a good dad on the show.” And I said, “Oh, wow. Thanks.” And he goes, “Yeah, it’s probably because of us that you’re so natural at being a good dad.” And I was like, “You’re right. Absolutely right.”

TCM makes one of its ‘31 Days of Oscar’ all about love

Everybody loves a love story.

So the saying goes, and if it’s true, many people will find lots to love as Turner Classic Movies showcases romance as its “31 Days of Oscar” theme Sunday, March 5. Some of the most famous screen love stories are included in that day’s lineup, and here’s a look at several of those Academy Award winners.

“Doctor Zhivago” is director David Lean and screenwriter Robert Bolt’s 1965 retelling of the Boris Pasternak novel in which the title physician (played by Omar Sharif) falls deeply for Lara (Julie Christie), the mistress of a ruthless businessman (Rod Steiger) who also is involved with her mother. Oscars went to Bolt’s script, Freddie Young’s striking cinematography and the Maurice Jarre score that features “Lara’s Theme” (also known by the title “Somewhere, My Love”).

The stormy Civil War-era relationship of Rhett Butler and Scarlett O’Hara (Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh) largely fuels “Gone With the Wind.” Its year’s Oscar winner for best picture, the 1939 adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel earned a total of eight Academy Awards also including best actress for Leigh and best supporting actress for Hattie McDaniel, the first African American performer to earn an Oscar nomination and the award itself.

much less won the Oscar for best picture of 1942 for it. The screenplay – about the wartime reunion of ex-lovers Rick and Ilsa (Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman) –earned one of the movie’s three Oscars, the others being for best picture and best director (Michael Curtiz).

“The Way WeWere” is powered by the combined superstar might of Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford, but Arthur Laurents’ script for the Sydney Pollackdirected 1973 drama also digs into the Hollywood blacklist that sidelined so many entertainment careers. The film won Oscars for its Marvin Hamlisch score and the Streisand-performed title song.
