Gorman a star on the rise in St. Louis

In the category of young players to watch out for in 2023, we present for your consideration Nolan Gorman.

Indeed, in their 23-year-old second baseman/designated hitter, the St. Louis Cardinals look like they have a bona fide power bat to serve as a lefty-swinging complement to their slugging righty superstars Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado.

Through 19 April games, the Phoenix native was hitting .316 with five home runs, 16 RBIs, an on-base percentage of .403 and an OPS of 1.052. His season highlight so far came on April 19, when he came off the bench to pinch-hit a grand slam homer at Busch Stadium in the Cards’ 14-5 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

At 6 feet 1 inch and 210 pounds, Gorman has the size and powerful lefty swing that any team would love in a young slugger. And this season, he’s improved on his tendencies to chase balls out of the strike zone, resulting in an increase in his walk rate (13.4 percent in 2023 versus 9 percent in his rookie campaign last year) and a decrease in his strikeout rate (23.9 percent versus 32.9 percent).

Of course, all this comes with the caveat that “it’s still early” and his numbers will certainly come back to earth. But at this point, Gorman appears to be a player with a bright future ahead of him.

Gorman and the Cardinals can be seen on national TV Sunday May 14, when they close out a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in a contest airing on ESPN.

‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ bids

News of its cancellation this past January surely shocked and saddened fans of “NCIS: Los Angeles.” But they’ll be heartened to know the long-running CBS military drama will be getting a proper send-off with a twopart finale and retrospective.

Airing consecutive Sundays May 14 and 21, the finale titled “New Beginnings” picks up with the ATF seeking the NCIS team’s help in investigating stolen military-grade weapons and locating a missing agent. Also, Rountree’s (Caleb Castille) sister interviews for medical school and Sam (LL Cool J) encourages his father to take part in a drug trial.

And Callen and Anna (Chris O’Donnell, Bar Paly) will be putting the finishing touches on their wedding, though all indications are that it will be anything but smooth sailing.

Immediately following the May 21 closer will be “A Salute fo NCIS: Los Angeles,” an hourlong special hosted by Kevin Frazier that features features footage, behind-thescenes memories and interviews with cast including O’Donnell, Paly, Castille, LL Cool J, Daniela Ruah, Eric Christian Olsen and Medalion Rahimi.

Bringing a series to a close after 14 seasons and 322 episodes posed a formidable challenge for showrunner and executive

producer R. Scott Gemmill, who wanted to not only satisfy longtime viewers but also do justice to the individual characters, chief among them O’Donnell’s G. Callen and his impending nuptials.

“We sort of put Callen on that path in previous seasons,” Gemmill explains, “and once we found out that we were going to be wrapping up, it seemed like a natural progression for his character, I think, in the sense that he always played this sort of lone wolf ... but wasn’t one really to commit to even his own stable sort of lifestyle. And I think by having him take this leap and make a commitment to the Anna character, it sort of shows him moving into a next stage of his life and sort of coming to terms with who he is and what he wants for the future.”

As for other storyline threads, Gemmill indicates there will be a few surprise guest appearances though he didn’t get into specifics other than to say they will help bring closure and put characters on a hopeful path. After 14 seasons, the cast and crew have become like family to him and he hopes there will be other collaborations.

“You know the old saying ‘Don’t be sad that it’s over; be happy that it happened in the first place,’?” he says. “That’s what we’re trying to focus on. And over 14 years, you forge many, many friendships ... .

So I’m sure a lot of us will cross paths and we all want to work together again – Chris and Todd (LL Cool J) and Eric (Olsen) and Danny (Ruah) and I. So I’m sure we will find ways.”

Q: In the series version of “Fatal Attraction,” it’s incumbent on you and Joshua Jackson to portray a marriage that infidelity could disrupt deeply. Did you know his work previously?

A: I had tried to work with Josh many times. The two of us had tried to do a romantic comedy, and wouldn’t you know this is this thing where we finally got to work together? I think he’s brilliant, so I was really excited to do this with him. I also knew his stage work. I think he’s been underrated because he’s done so nicely for himself, but I definitely feel like he’s a force acting-wise.

Q: You’ve generated some of your own work in recent years, such as co-creating and co-writing the Netflix series “The Chair.” Can you describe the appeal for you in doing that?

A: It’s a great joy to be able to sit down and work without waiting for my agent to call me and say, “We have an audition!” As many people have said before me, there’s a whole aspect of being an actor that’s a little bit like having a terrible boyfriend.

For most of us, there’s a fair amount of waiting ... but not if you’re Cate Blanchett or Julia Roberts. With writing, I can just go ahead and do that anytime and anywhere. And in my sweatpants.

The Cube TBS 8 p.m.

This Season 2 premiere puts host Dwyane Wade back inside The Cube – 15 square feet of steel-edged plexiglass – where he is joined by competing teams, each with nine lives, as they fight to win a series of seven games and ultimately escape with $250,000.

NCIS: Los Angeles WBBM WMBD 9 p.m.

The ATF seeks help from the team to investigate stolen military-grade weapons and locate a missing agent in Part 1 of the big series finale. Part 2 airs on May 21 but at an earlier time, to allow for a post-show retrospective special.

Q: How was it to film “Love in Zion National: A National Park Romance” on location?

A: All of these parks are magnificent, and they all are so different in their own ways. I haven’t done all of them yet, but I’m on a good roll here! (Busby made “Marry Me in Yosemite” on location for Hallmark Channel last year.)

Zion National was beautiful, but it was pretty chilly still. They’d been getting a little bit of snow, so we were working with Mother Nature, if you will. But the sky was clear, and we were just lucky to be shooting outdoors. Every day out there is a good day.

Q: With “Meet Me in Yosemite,” you had to start your work days early, before the tourist

crowd began filling the park. Was it the same at Zion National?

A: It wasn’t the same as far as that goes. There weren’t any 4 a.m. calls – which I was super-grateful for – plus we were shooting earlier in the year than we shot “Meet Me in Yosemite,” so the sun came up at a different time as well.

(Zion National) is very vast, and most of the time, we had no cellphone reception ... which kind of told you where you were at. You knew you were kind of in the middle of nowhere, which I frankly loved. It’s nice just to be in the moment, and it really makes a difference. And it makes for a more tightly knit crew, because ev-

eryone is just there together. Most of the crew on “Yosemite” was part of this one, too, which was really cool.

Q: “Love in Zion National” also has a cultural aspect, since your curator character has to determine whether ancient vases belong to the Pueblo Nation. Do you enjoy playing out such elements?

A: It’s important, because it’s part of the history of Zion. I felt a little bit like Indiana Jones at times, since we were finding all these clues about the vases, then something would happen that derailed us. It was pretty fun to do a mini-mystery in that regard. Everyone learns along with Lauren, the character I play, she’s the vessel for that information.

Q: In the doc, you and your brothers say your relationship with your dad continues to this day. How so?

A: You reference them, is what I find, is that you realize that I’m the same age as Mom or Dad was when X happened. And also your more recent experience of them actually becomes fresher as you age because your more recent experience of them is of them as an older person which you get closer and closer to as you age. So that in some way they become more relatable and familiar to you as you get older. And yeah, just every now and again they’re in your head.

A: There’s a funny anecdote about that because when I went to school, the first boarding school I went to was when I was 7, and there was some awareness that he was a performer of some kind. And there was a very famous children’s performer called Rolf Harris. He was Australian, he would sing songs and paint pictures and then introduce cartoons and stuff like that. So they all thought he was Rolf Harris and I’d say, “No, no, his name’s Richard. Richard Harris,” they’d lose interest. And I would say to Dad, “Dad, why can’t you be more like Rolf Harris?” Because then my friends would care.

Q: He was also a favorite on the talk show circuit.

A: There was a while where his career hit the doldrums and he wasn’t offered anything for two years and he was really kept alive by Johnny Carson. And Johnny Carson would invite him onto the show and get him in front of the industry out there and remind them that he was there and that he was relevant still. And some of the stuff he did on that show was just so fantastic and bizarre, like experimental readings of “Hamlet” with singing and dance and some strange stuff.

Q: Letterman used to love the stories he’d tell.

A: Letterman loved him because he basically just said, “My next guess is Richard Harris,” and then that’s when he could sit back and you didn’t have to worry about: Is this going to be a good segment? Dad would just run with it.

Ali Stroker helps give Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’ fresh energy

A very inclusive rendering of “Richard III” offers a unique “winter of our discontent.”

Being televised on PBS’ “Great Performances” Friday, May 19 (check local listings), the “Shakespeare in the Park” production – taped last summer in New York’s Central Park – casts female Danai Gurira (“Black Panther”) in the male title role and “Oklahoma!” Tony honoree Ali Stroker, who uses a wheelchair, as power-hungry monarch Richard’s put-upon wife Lady Anne. Sharon Washington, who was Lady Anne in a three-decades-earlier staging, appears as Queen Margaret.

“It was a very special opportunity,” the pleasant Stroker recalls. “It was always on my bucket list to do Shakespeare. It was funny, because I’d kind of started working on Shakespeare in a class and with my husband during the pandemic, when we had so much time. Then, this came along and I thought, ‘Wow! This is perfect timing.”’

Stroker enjoyed playing what she deems Lady Anne’s “many sides. In this story, she’s desperate, and Richard is so cunning ... ‘evil,’ some people might label him. Casting Richard with a woman added really cool

layers, and Danai is just fabulous. We had a great time. It was a blast every night.”

It also was a challenge, Stroker admits, since she was expecting her first child at the time. “To do a show while you’re pregnant is really special,” she reflects, “because it’s like you’re doing it with your baby.”

Though she might not be in that condition if she tackled any more works by the Bard, Stroker would like to have such acting chances: “It’s its own genre. I love musical theater, which is so heightened, and it’s the same way with Shakespeare. The language is so different from what we’re used to.”
