Padres look to conclude three-game set with strong performance against Yankees
Get your popcorn ready, baseball fans! The 2025 MLB regular season continues with another star-studded matchup between the American League East juggernaut New York Yankees and the surging San Diego Padres, Wednesday, May 7, at Yankee Stadium in New York City. The matchup airs live on MLBNet and Prime Video.
The Padres have been off to a fiery start in 2025, winning their first seven games of the season and (at press time) hold a .286 team batting average, with 124 hits and 20 stolen bases.
Boasting an MLB-leading 10-3 record so far, the Padres look to keep building off a strong 2024 post-season that saw “the Friars” push the eventual World Series-winning Los Angeles Dodgers to the brink of elimination before they pulled out a win.
This season, the Padres’ offensive core has remained largely the same, with the likes of Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill and star right-fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. all fully committed to the process of winning in a highly competitive National League West Division.
While the 26-year-old star Tatis was injured for all of 2022, out with an 80-game PED
suspension in 2023 and had another injury-riddled campaign last season, he enters this season healthy and performing at an elite level. Currently, Tatis holds a .364 batting average, with all signs pointing to a potential return to his MVP-level playing form.
The Yankees, meanwhile, are highly motivated after reaching the World Series last season, eventually blowing a five-run lead in a home elimination game against the Dodgers — a World Series nightmare.
Despite the heartache, the Yankees rank second in home runs (26) and rank in the top five for strikeouts (124), something they will need to exploit against a well-rounded and gritty Padres club, which just last season pulled off 38 comefrom-behind victories.

The other ‘Miss Austen’: Miniseries focuses on love and loathe of literary sisters
In the literary world, the name Austen typically invokes images of women in billowing attire atop a breezy English cliff or traversing a John Constable-worthy pastoral landscape with book in hand, perhaps unwilling to — but about to — meet her true love. From 1811’s “Sense and Sensibility” to 1817’s “Persuasion,” author Jane Austen wrote some of the English language’s best and most recognized novels of all time — but she also completed plenty of unpublished works, perhaps most famously a collection of letters fated to burn at the hand of her elder sister, Cassandra.
In the BBC series “Miss Austen,” coming to Masterpiece on PBS Sunday, May 4, showrunner and director Aisling Walsh (“Maudie,” 2016) pairs with screenwriter Andrea Gibb (“Call the Midwife”) for a dramatic retelling of author Gill Hornby’s third novel, also called “Miss Austen,” which explores the love, frustration and competition between the Austen sisters.
The four-part series, first released in the U.K. in February of this year, stars Keeley Hawes (“Line of Duty”) as Cassandra Austen, with Synnove Karlsen (“Last Night in Soho,” 2021) and Patsy Ferran (“God’s Own Country,” 2017) portraying young Cassy and Jane Austen, respectively. To whom the title of “Miss Austen” applies, however, is left to the viewers’ discretion (the remaining six Austen siblings are male), but author Hornby’s intentions are clear: Cassandra is the heroine of this particular tale.
According to the PBS Masterpiece press description, “’Miss Austen’ takes a historic literary mystery — the notorious burning of Jane Austen’s letters by her
sister Cassandra — and reimagines it as a fascinating, witty and heartbreaking story of sisterly love, while creating in Cassandra a character as captivating as any Austen heroine.
“Based on Gill Hornby’s bestselling novel,” the explanation continues, “this period drama brings a fresh and intimate perspective to the Austen sisters’ lives — their joys, heartaches, and the passions that would shape Jane’s iconic novels.”
While Hornby’s novel debuted in 2020, the series was adapted for a 2025 release as a special way of marking the year Jane Austen would have turned 250 years old. But while Jane is, of course, a huge part of the reason Hornby began writing, the true heroine of “Miss Austen” is Cassandra, Jane’s oft-overlooked older sister.
Ahead of the release of “Miss Austen” on BBC One, Hornby was interviewed by The Guardian, noting, “I always feel that we who like Jane’s novels should be on our knees in gratitude for all of the good Cassandra did. Jane was a fragile person and fragile people need their wingman, and that is who [Cassandra] was.
“I’m haunted by women in history who had their destinies and then had to live on their wits when things went wrong,” Hornby stated later in the interview. And that wit — as great writing and acting would have it — is one of the Austen sisters’ many personality traits that is masterfully captured in the BBC miniseries.
Boasting a sizable and well-respected cast as the Austen family and various friends and neighbors, “Miss Austen” stars Alfred Enoch (“How to Get Away with Murder”), Liv Hill (“The Little Stranger,”
2018), Jessica Hynes (“The Royle Family”), Rose Leslie (“Game of Thrones”), Phyllis Logan (“Downton Abbey”), Max Irons (“The Wife,” 2017), Mirren Mack (“The Doll Factory”), Kevin McNally (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl,” 2003), Clare Foster (“The ExWife”), Carys Bowkett (“The Suspect”), Calam Lynch (“Sweetpea”) and rising talent Ruby Richardson (“The Crown”).

Dennis Quaid
Q: It’s been interesting to watch Dennis Quaid on “Happy Face.” Has he done any other series?
A: The Paramount+ true-crime drama has just wrapped up its season, and before that, the actor did another show for that streaming service, 2023’s “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” That same year, he also was in the cast of the limited-run mystery series “Full Circle” for Max (directed by Steven Soderbergh, with whom Quaid also worked on the Oscar-winning 2000 movie “Traffic”).
Quaid’s television credits date all the way back to a 1977 guest appearance on Robert Blake’s detective series “Baretta,” and he made such TV movies as “Bill” and “Johnny Belinda” (both for CBS) in the early 1980s. Around that time, feature films such as “The Right Stuff” (1983) and “The Big Easy” (1987) boosted his opportunities on the big screen, so he largely stayed there, though he turned up on TV again on occasion. The first continuing series role for Quaid was in “Vegas,” a 2012-13 CBS drama on which he also was an executive producer, as was fellow star Michael Chiklis. Quaid played the fact-inspired Sheriff Ralph Lamb, who battled attempted underworld infiltration of the gambling business in Las Vegas. The next series for Quaid was “The Art of More,” a New York auction house saga that the streamer Crackle showed over two seasons (2015-16).
The thriller series “Fortitude” was shown by Pivot in 2015, with Quaid as part of an international cast that also included Stanley Tucci, Sienna Guillory, Jessica Gunning, Michael Gambon and Parminder Nagra. And “Merry Happy Whatever” was a seasonal 2019 offering on Netflix that featured Quaid as a family man stressed out by a variety of things at the holidays.

Country singer soiree: Academy of Country Music Awards returns for landmark 60th year
Hosted by the incomparable and acclaimed Reba McEntire (“Is There Life Out There”), the 60th Academy of Country Music Awards will broadcast live from the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, Thursday, May 8, airing exclusively on Prime Video and on the Amazon Music Twitch channel.
This annual, crooner-packed celebration honors singers, songwriters and performers from across the country genre, highlighting talent in categories such as Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Entertainer of the Year and plenty more. This year, the event will also celebrate its monumental 60th edition, marking six decades worth of unforgettable performances by country artists across generations.
This year, ACM newcomer Ella Langley (“you look like you love me”) leads with eight total nominations — including Female Artist of the Year and New Female Artist of the Year — followed closely by Cody Johnson (“‘Til You Can’t”) and Morgan Wallen (“Cowgirls”), both with seven, and Chris Stapleton (“Think I’m In Love With You”), who impresses with six nominations of his own.
Singer Lainey Wilson (“Heart Like A Truck”) has also made an impression on country fans, earning herself the most nominations across different categories for a female artist. The website acmcountry. com notes that Wilson has “[earned] nods in six separate categories, including her first nomination for Artist-Songwriter of the Year. Wilson’s nominations for Song of the Year mark her fourth consecutive year
being nominated and her seventh total nomination (including artist and songwriter credits) in the category.”
With plenty of first times and first-timers to recognize, the 60th ACM awards will also recognize a broad list of newcomer nominees who have earned their first distinctions at this year’s awards. These firsttime nominees include artists such as Gavin Adcock (“A Cigarette”), Dasha (“Didn’t I?”), Noah Kahan (“Stick Season”), Jessie Murph (“Wild Ones”), Muscadine Bloodline (“Me on You”), Shaboozey (“Highway”), Zach Top (“I Never Lie”), The Red Clay Strays (“Wondering Why”), Treaty Oak Revival (“I’m the Worst”) and Tucker Wetmore (“What Would You Do?”).
Meanwhile, longtime ACM attendees Rascal Flatts (“Bless the Broken Road”) have received their first nomination since 2017 for Group of the Year, with their most recent win for the award taking place over 15 years ago in 2009.
