Alina Johnson

Taking a lead role on life’s stage Streator High’s Alina Johnson is on her way to a career helping the elderly DEREK BARICHELLO dbarichello@shawmedia.com 815-431-4073 When, and if, Streator High School’s drama club performs “The Beauty and the Beast,” Alina Johnson will take the stage as Belle, the female lead.

The role has been a natural fit, because Alina sees much of herself in the character.

Similarly growing up in a small town, Belle is altruistic, Alina said. She’s mindful of the people around her.

“She always wants more, she never settles,” Alina added. “ ... I can relate my life to Belle.”

Alina has shown drive in both the career path she’s blazing and her role in the high

school band.

At 16, Alina started working as a dietary aid at Heritage Health in Streator. She said it opened her eyes to the many lessons she can learn from the elderly clients.

“They showed me how important family is, how important it is to keep people close to you. They taught me about family and friends and God,” Alina said. “I’ve taken so much of that into my personal life.”

Alina, a senior at Streator High School, wants to care for the elderly as a career.

She works half her school day as a certified nursing assistant through the high school’s work program at Heritage Health.

Solon-Telford Funeral Home carries 120-year-old tradition

T&L Janitorial Supply offers great products at low prices Tami Thomas-Leonatti’s second business was grown out of necessity for both herself and other local businesses.

When a local janitorial supply service closed down, owner Thomas-Leonatti of Quality Care Cleaning found it much harder to get the supplies she needed and assumed that others in the area were struggling as well.

The prices for supplies rose dramatically and those dollars were then being spent outside of the community.

Additionally, some products that many had come to love were now impossible to find.

“We thought the community needed someone else to help them as well,” she said.

“If we couldn’t find it then we knew people in our community couldn’t find it.

Thomas-Leonatti formed a partnership with Midlab Chemicals and opened T&L Janitorial Supply at the start of 2015 to fill the void.

Five years later and the family-owned company has grown considerably while word of their products continues to reach new customers.

The business offers a variety of cleaning and paper products but with the added benefit of free, local delivery.

Products range from a specialty wax that commercial businesses have grown to love as well as floor cleaning products such as the Midlab Glide, which individual customers have come to appreciate for its floral scent. In addition, the company offers a variety of other environment-friendly products.

Their love for their product line is on display in the lobby, which has a shelf of some of the company’s more popular items. But their selection is not limited to what’s imme-

Paula Helton, office manager, said there is an entire warehouse and online catalog of products available for purchase to meet everyone’s specific needs.

Some may not consider cleaning supplies on the list of items that can be purchased from a local business, but the ones that do know that with smaller businesses comes an increased understanding of an individual customer’s need.

“Paula always has the answer and if she doesn’t have the immediate answer then she finds it for you,” Thomas-Leonatti said. “She’s gold.”

Staff members are available either in person or over the phone to discuss their product line and estimates.

Many of their products are likely more budget friendly compared to the offerings at larger businesses.

And don’t let their small upbringings fool you. The company is more than willing to send a representative to a school and bid for larger contracts as well.

Helton said the proof of success is in the products themselves, which have generated repeat customers and filled a need in the community.

“The people that know we’re here are thankful because they didn’t know what to do or where they were going to get their products,” Helton said. “They’re thankful that now we’re carrying them.”

Recently funeral director Chip Reihl joined the staff at Solon-Telford Funeral Home. Chip has an abundance of experience as a funeral director, managing funeral homes in both Ottawa and Toluca over the years.

After retiring in March of 2019, Chip decided to

move back to his hometown of Streator to be closer to his family.

“When we heard Chip was moving back to the area, it was an easy decision to invite him to join our staff. He has been in the funeral industry since 1977, therefore he brings a lot of knowledge with him, along with familiarity with many of the families we serve,” said Jason.

The funeral home staff also includes Licensed Funeral Director Pat Gibbons, along with part-time service assistants Millie Murphy, Tim Redd, Bill Lee and Jerry Ftacek.

“We could not offer the service that we do without the wonderful staff that we have. They are all very valuable and important to us and really just a part of our extended family.” said Dolly.

Johnson From page A1 She plans on attending Illinois Valley Community College to get her registered nursing degree and she intends to graduate St. Francis University to become a nurse practitioner specializing in gerontology.

In her free time, she participates in the high school band. She served as drum major her sophomore and junior years.

As a drum major, she led the marching band during shows and performances.

That involved arriving early and leaving late to prepare and set up practices. It also included working hours at home on conducting and preparing pieces.

“It was stressful, but I enjoyed it,” Alina said. “The other band members looked at you to help them, or teach them their part.”

Starting with oboe lessons in fourth grade and later joining choir, Alina said playing in the band and performing in front of people allowed her to develop confidence in herself.

Though she was an underclassmen, she interviewed to be drum major her freshman year. She was fortunate to lead the band in just her sophomore year and get that extra year of experience.

“It taught me a lot about leadership,” said Alina, who plays the oboe this year in the Central Illinois Youth Symphony. “It taught me how to communicate with

For Jason and Dolly Telford, the funeral profession is more than just an occupation, it is their life.

For the last 19 years the two have been carrying on the great legacy that was started nearly 120 years ago.

“We are very lucky to be able to serve our friends in this great community” said Jason. “The confidence that this community instills in us is very humbling.”

The Telfords were born and raised in Streator, both attending Streator High School and then moving on to Illinois State University where they earned their bachelor’s degrees, Jason in Communications/Public Relations and Dolly in Business/Marketing. In 1997, Jason attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science in order to pursue a lifelong dream of becoming a funeral director.

The Solon Funeral Home was founded in 1901 and has been a staple in Streator for 119 years. The business saw four generations of Solons establish and run the business until 2002.

“When we had the opportunity to purchase the funeral home, it was truly a dream come true,” said Dolly.

“It was an opportunity and a challenge that we wanted to take and an investment that we wanted to make in Streator,” she continued.

The funeral industry as a whole has experienced many changes over the years. From family viewings being held in the family home to full service and elaborate celebration of life ceremonies, the Solon Funeral Home has been through it all.

Co-owners and twin sisters Amy Billings and Brooke Burgwald pride themselves on creating a relaxed atmosphere for customers during their more than two decades in business together, 15 of which at their location at 830 W. Norris Drive.

“We’ve just always liked doing it and we’ve always wanted to be together,” Amy said. “It doesn’t feel like a job. The girls are a second family and people walk in and they’re like family.”

The name, Ambrosis Salon, itself comes from the blending of “Amy,” “Brooke” and “sisters” and is a sign that a family atmosphere is important at the salon.

Clients can walk in expecting to see a familiar face and grow a bond with one, if not all, of the salon’s dedicated stylists. And kids are welcome to stay and explore the salon as well, such as looking for the candy machine.

They continue to stay up on new trends while offering new services, such as a more recent addition of a microblader and permanent eyeliner tattoo.

Amy said the salon offers TZ lights, balayage, highlights, colors, cuts, perms, waxes, up dos and makeup.

They also specialize in prepping for wedding parties and if you can’t make it to the salon then they’ll bring the salon to you with onsite location visits.

Their offerings and services have been a hit with clients for a long time but they’re especially proud to have been recognized for The Times’ Readers’ Choice Award in 2018 and 2019 as well as the Best of North Central Award in 2019 and 2020.

The work of No Animal Left Behind is a community service to provide a healthier life for our pets.

The agency hosts the seventh annual Best Friend Pet Photo Contest to raise money for spay/neuter programs at local animal shelters, Illinois Valley Animal Rescue and Safe House Animal Rescue. People can submit photos of their faithful companions from April 17 to April 23 and voting will take place online April 20 through April 26.

Voting costs $1 per vote.

Voting can be done by visiting noanimalleftbehind. org, then clicking on the pet photo contest tab.

The top four winners will be featured on August Hill Winery wine bottles.

Winners will be announced at the Sip ‘n’ Snip Festival, which is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16 in downtown Utica. There will be raffles, games, music, food and vendors. Pets are invited.

IVCC Ottawa Center provides classes closer to home It has been almost 10 years since Illinois Valley Community College opened its Ottawa Center satellite campus and it remains a friendly and convenient option for students on the east side of the college district.

Since the center opened in August 2010 at 321 W. Main St., thousands of students from Ottawa, Marseilles, Streator, Seneca and Serena have enjoyed a shorter commute without sacrificing the high-quality education IVCC is renowned for.

The center provides a variety of unique opportunities in the heart of downtown Ottawa including a beautifully remodeled building equipped with leading-edge technology and ample parking just a few steps from the door.

Through Certified Nursing Assistant courses offered each spring, summer and fall, Ottawa Center offers the opportunity for students to enter the high-demand health care field.

The rich history of community theater continues at Engle Lane in Streator 2020 marks the 63rd season at Engle Lane Theatre and 10 years since the theatre was damaged by the 2010 tornado that went through Streator. Their rich history is an important part of the community.

The organization Community Players of Streator, Inc. evolved from a small group of people who simply wanted to put on a show. From their humble beginnings with their first performances in the Streator Township High School auditorium, they are now housed in a beautiful state-of-the-art theater.

Officially, the theater’s name is The William C. Schiffbauer Center for the Performing Arts at Engle Lane, more commonly known as Engle Lane Theatre.

Through the support of the community over many years, Donna Peterson’s dream of having a local community theater was brought to life and continues today. Dr. William C. Schiffbauer became an early driving force for the group. His background in musical theater performance and enthusiasm helped put Engle Lane on the map in the community.

In 1960, Constance Engle generously donated the property where the theater now sits, evolving from a simple warehouse into a wonderfully equipped playhouse affectionately known as “The Barn.”

In 2010, a tornado badly damaged the theater, forcing cancellation of the remainder of their summer season.

Less than one year later, the newly-remodeled theater was back up and running for a complete season.

Hundreds of people have contributed to Engle Lane’s success over the years. From set designers, costumers and technical support, to board members, directors, staff and performers, all have given of themselves unconditionally to the single focus of putting on a live performance. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, everyone’s contribution is important.

The cast of the children’s production of “Babes in Toyland” rehearses at Engle Lane Theatre in Streator during the 2019 season. The youth musical planned for 2020 is a new production of “Alice in Wonderland.” regardless of experience, are welcome to participate.

Once inside the doors of Engle Lane, everyone is part of a dedicated team with the shared goal of doing their very best. Teamwork is essential and lays the very foundation for success in life, both personally and professionally.

While everyone works diligently, they receive no monetary compensation. Their reward comes in the form of applause, which makes the dance steps, memorization of lines and hours of prepara-

tion worth it.

The continuing success of the theatre is due to many factors, among them a very important audience. Over the years, people have faithfully supported the theater through both financial contributions and being faithful in attendance.

An all-volunteer board of directors works year-round to oversee operations of the theater.

They oversee not only the season’s productions, but also the operations, building

and grounds, equipment and inventory.

For over 60 years, Engle Lane Theater has been providing Central Illinois with quality live entertainment.

The mission of our current board of directors is to continue that tradition.

The 63rd season lineup includes: The musicals “Crazy for You” and “Cinderella,” as well as the youth musical of a new production of “Alice in Wonderland.” Comedies are “Clue: On Stage” and “Get Smart” and the drama thrill-
