“The crowds were great,” City Councilman and Streator Tourism Chairman Ed Brozak told The Times-Press in the 1999 article. “There were people just crowding the sidewalks, it was hard to get around a few blocks of Main Street. It was a wonderful turnout.”

The same can be said for nearly every Roamer Cruise Night after as the activity celebrates its 20th anniversary from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, in downtown Streator. The Dream Machines Car Club has sponsored the event each year, featuring a car show in the daytime.

streets line up with vendors as crowds from businesses overflow onto the street.

Many businesses host entertainment and sell food. More than 400 cars participated in the cruise in 2018, with several thousand more people attending.

While most of the cars cruising are classics, anyone is welcome to cruise, said Chad Irving, of Dream Machines Car Club. Registration for Cruise Night is $10 for a static cling sticker and goes from 3 to 7 p.m. with the car club headquartered at the Streator Area Chamber

of Commerce and Industry, 318 E. Main St. Those participating in the car show can register for both the car show and Cruise Night for $25. Anyone cruising without registering will be kicked out of the cruise by police. There’s no preregistration.

Streator remains the only Cruise Night that allows participants to still cruise, Irving said.

“That’s what makes ours unique,” he said.

And 20 years later, the Cruise Night still brings the crowds.

The car show will begin with registration from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by the show from noon to 3 p.m. at City Park in downtown Streator.

Trophies will be handed out at about 3:30 p.m.

Last year, the car show had 160 entries, said Chad Irving, of the Dream Machines Car Club. Registration is $15. An additional $10 will secure a participant a static cling sticker to participate in the Cruise Night from 5 to 10 p.m. in downtown Streator.

The car shows allows visitors to walk around the park and check out cars at a more leisurely pace than the cruise, which moves to Main Street among the crowds and allows vehicles to cruise the streets.

More than 70 awards will be given in multiple classifications. New to this year’s show is an award for the Corvette class.

To honor the car show’s 20th anniversary, Irving said the trophies “are pretty big.”

Held in downtown Streator on Main Street each Labor Day weekend, this family event brings over 600 restored and antique cars and features its namesake 1917 Roamer automobile. The largest automotive event in downstate Illinois attracts spectators numbering between 15 -20,000. It’s a time of nostalgia, camaraderie and good old-fashioned fun.

The Times Staff Streator’s Labor Day festivities don’t end Saturday, Aug. 31.

The Labor Day parade is scheduled at noon Sunday, Sept. 1, and lineup will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Interested parties can register by calling the Streator Area Chamber of Commerce

and Industry at 815-672-2921 or by walking into their office at 320 E. Main St. The parade lineup begins at the Santa Fe Depot on Illinois Street.

Streator Chamber of Commerce President Jack Dzuris said they’re expecting about 40 participants, including schools, bands, local businesses and unions.
