Tanya Hardy provides award-winning jams and jellies at Clarke County Farmers Market

Tanya Hardy, the fifth and sixth grade instrumental music teacher for Clarke Community Schools, is a familiar face at the Clarke County Farmers Market. Her pies and preserves are also a common sight at the Iowa State Fair — particularly in the winner’s case in the Elwell Family Food Center.

“I decided to enter one year in jams, with just eight jams and I ended up placing them all,” said Hardy. “In 2013, I thought I’d do all the jams, all 35. I ended up winning the sweepstakes.”

A quick look at her collection of jelly jars turns up surprising flavors shoppers will be tasked to find anywhere else. Kiwi, dandelion, wild grape.

She searches out wild fare and relies on her own garden and fellow farmers market sellers for fresh produce for canning and preserving.

“The violet is actually one of my daughter’s favorites,” said Hardy, holding up a clear pink concoction. “It’s not as sweet as you’d think.”

It’s also much more work intensive. A small jar of jelly requires a quart of packed-down petals.

Another rarity is the herb jelly Hardy makes using plants from her own and her father’s gardens.

“It has basil leaves, mint leaves, chocolate mint leaves, peppermint mint leaves, chives, Genovese basil and then you steep all of that,” said Hardy.

“It smells really good when you’re making it.”

Cooking has always been a part of her family tradition, passed down from her mother, local Nancy Meyers.

“My mom taught us to make pies from a very small age. She has been doing pies forever, and, before that, my grandmother. She used to make pies and sell them a long time ago, back in the ‘20s. She made them completely from scratch,” said Hardy. “My sister does too. My sister’s actually the one who got me into entering at the state fair.”

Over the years, Hardy’s entries have expanded from jams to jellies, butters, preserves, canned vegetables and now conserves, vegetable and fruit mixes used as meat garnishes. Though, some of her products can’t be sold at the Farmers Market, like marmalades and pepper mixes.

In all, Hardy said she’s entered all 81 categories and placed in 68 of them. When it comes to placing, she’s often neck-and-neck with Rod Zeitler, a doctor out of Iowa City.

“We enjoy competing with each other,” said Hardy. “We try to make our recipes even better every year. Then a different lady started up and beat us in some categories, and we were like ‘Oh, we have to go back to the drawing board.’ He doesn’t do pies though.”

Hardy recently started entering the pie competitions at the fair and not-so-surprisingly placed there, as well.

When asked if she had any advice for new competitors to the state fair, the answer was simple.

Combing the forests looking for seasonal selections is one of the best parts of Hardy’s canning activities.

“Read up on the rules. They change rules yearly,” she said, from which categories can include food coloring to where you’re allowed to park, there is always something new to learn about competing.

“We get all dressed up,” said Hardy. “We have our pants on, long-sleeved shirts, in the middle of July and August, our hats. We put duct tape around our ankles to keep ticks from climbing up. That’s normal to me though, because my dad

“The canning and the baking are kind of a stress reliever for me. This is actually therapeutic,” she said, and the variety she offers customers who stop at her table is certainly inspiring.

In that, she’s not alone. Several vendors offer items shoppers will find hard to come by on the store shelf, including an influx of vegetables used in ethnic cooking, like the kohlrabi sold by Al Adams or the giant Korean radishes found at Roger and Connie Bill’s booth.

Then there are the kids who show up to make a difference. On one end of the market, 17-year-old Hank Bauer strums guitar while playing harmonica, his guitar case open for donations from passersby. On the other, 14-year-old Jeremiah Morgan is set up with cinnamon rolls and pies.

“I’m going to D.C. with my class next year,” he said. His mother Shelly Morgan and grandmother Betty Marshall are helping him pay his own way by providing the baked goods.

The Clarke County Farmers Market is held 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays on the southeast corner of the Clarke County Courthouse lawn. OSCEOLA Local events, rec center plans provide community with fun ways to improve health

Terry Smith is a fan of extreme running, with a focus on personal challenge versus winning prizes. As one of the athletes in and around Clarke County, he’s finding the area increasingly able to meet his recreation needs — and those opportunities continue to grow with help from the community.

Smith and his dog participated in the Earth Day 5K in April at East Lake Park. The duo completed several laps around the park before the start of the race, the route of which was designed to highlight the span of the park.

“I don’t think people realize how big it really is,” said Clarke County Conservation Board Director Steve Kent.

With arrows marking the way from the covered shelter past the gazebo on the far edge of the property and heading back toward the playground equipment, the race offered increased challenges to those used to running on paved tracks. It’s more in-line with what Smith would like to see offered for runners in the area.

Earlier this year, he brought a 24-hour marathon to the city for consideration. Mayor Thomas Kedley presented the idea during a city council meeting in April, with the event planned for early June. The idea was approved by the Parks and Recreation Board, but due to miscommunication, the event was postponed for next year. There wasn’t enough time to organize it the way intended, according to Smith.

The organization has seen a few large donations, namely from the Subway on U.S. Highway 34 and Osceola Farm and Home. The group has also paired with the Iowa Fireworks Company. The company is donating 5 percent of local sales. The white-and-yellow striped firework sale tent will be up now until July 9 across from Playa Margaritas Mexican Restaurant on West McLane Street/Highway 34.

A recently completed Rec Center assessment by Hansen Kitchell of Johnston compared two potential building sites — an area west of Clarke High School near the city pool and a space along Highway 69, next to the Osceola Train Depot.

“We’re looking at operating costs of similar communities,” said Kedley.

“We have five different rec centers from around the country.

what’s cookin’ in kyp’s kitchen BURGER TIME!

“Awesome” is what I will say about this burger recipe. I’m always looking for something a little different and this fits the bill. The flavors go so well together and I will make this again and again - enjoy! Smakelijk eten!

BACON DOUBLE-CHEESE BURGERS WITH CHIPS 1 large egg, lightly beaten 2/3 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese 1/4 cup ketchup 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 Tbsp. snipped fresh basil or 1/2 tsp. dried basil 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1 lb. lean ground beef 4 slices bacon, cooked and finely chopped 4 slices provolone cheese 4 pretzel buns or regular hamburger buns, split kosher dill sandwich slicers pickles sour cream and onion potato chips

In a large bowl combine egg, onion, parmesan cheese, ketchup, garlic, basil, salt and pepper. Add ground beef and bacon; mix well. Shape into four 3/4-inch-thick patties.

Grill patties on the rack of an uncovered grill directly over medium heat for 14 to 18 minutes or until temperature reaches 160°, turning once halfway through grilling. Add a slice of cheese to each burger during the last minute of grilling. Toast buns on the grill. Serve burgers on buns topped with pickle slices and potato chips, if desired.

“Summertime” is “Fun Time” Summertime is always filled with so many fun activities with family and friends, and Osceola is just the place to enjoy a lot of them. Whether you enjoy the county fair, the fourth of July parade and carnival, baseball games, swimming, fishing or other summertime activities.....

For those of you who know my family and me, you are well aware of the fact that our summers are jam packed with going to livestock shows and county fairs across the Midwest. We also enjoy having many visitors from across the country visit our farm to view our cattle for sale and one of the comments we often hear is how much people enjoy visiting the rolling hills of southern Iowa. Sometimes those of us that live here forget just how lucky we are to call southern Iowa “Home.”

We have again enjoyed putting together this issue of Osceola Living. What made it even more fun this time was combining forces with Derek and the Osceola Chamber/ Main Street to bring you our normal stories of local people along with a very useful Business Directory.
