Get to know Osceola businesses during Meet Your Merchants event on the square Osceola has many businesses in town, and the Meet Your Merchants event is a great way to get to know the people who run them.

“A lot of the businesses will send, say their CEO or the president or the main person behind the business, and that’s something you don’t see a lot of times if you go into a store,” said Derek Lumsden, executive director of Osceola Chamber/Main Street (OCMS).

“You don’t know who is in charge or what’s going on. But, this event brings a lot of those people out, so you get behind the counter, or whatever, to meet them and have a chance to talk to them.”

Meet Your Merchants is the annual “thank you” to the local community from OCMS and all its member businesses.

This year’s event is planned 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 23, on the courthouse lawn in Osceola.

The rain date this year is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 6.

What to expect Every member of OCMS gets to participate for free, have booth space, set up with a display, hand out information and do drawings.

Some vendors will even have family-friendly games for people to participate.

“It’s a great way to let people know what your business is about and what you’re doing,” she said.

Food Don’t worry about getting too hungry, because there’s also food at the event this summer.

A meal will be provided by Osceola Hy-Vee, Subway and Osceola Foods, which OCMS board members hand out as a thank you.

Entertainment this year will be Diana Upton-Hill, an Iowa native who recently released her Nashville debut single.

“In years past, we did it where they were spread out all over the courthouse lawn and we had the games,” Lumsden said. “And, then, the last couple of years, we started consolidating them all over in front of the bandstand, and a lot of the merchants brought over their own games.”

Approximately 500 to 700 people attend Meet Your Merchants every year. Lumsden said this was a good number, considering the event also coincides with the softball and summer vacation season.

Amy Lundquist with Highway Lumber said Meet Your Merchants is a great way for local merchants to get out and speak with each other, as well as people in the community.

“It’s a nice way for people to get out and meet businesses that they didn’t know we had,” he said. AH

what’s cookin’ in kyp’s kitchen I grill a lot, but I never thought of grilling meatloaf until I saw this recipe. I made half the recipe for the two of us, but still used one whole egg. I definitely will be making this again and again. Even the leftovers were good rewarmed. Smakelijk eten!

BBQ MEAT LOAF or SANDWICH 1 1/4 lb. ground beef (80% lean) 1 1/4 lb. ground pork 2 cups panko bread crumbs 1 cup finely chopped yellow onion 1 large egg 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 tsp. dried tarragon 1 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper Sauce 1/2 cup bottled barbecue sauce 1/4 cup ketchup sourdough bread (optional) provolone cheese (optional)

In a large bowl using your hands, gently combine the meat loaf ingredients. Divide the meat loaf mixture in half and form into two loaves, each about 4 inches wide and 6 to 7 inches long. Place the loaves on a sheet pan. Prepare the grill for indirect cooking over medium-low heat (about 350°).

In a small bowl mix the sauce ingredients. Set aside half of the sauce to serve with the meat loaf. Top each meat loaf with 3 tablespoons of the remaining sauce and coat thoroughly.

Brush the cooking grates clean. Using a metal spatula, gently pick up each loaf from the sheet pan and place directly on the cooking grate. Grill the meat loaves over indirect medium-low heat, with the lid closed, until a thermometer inserted horizontally through the top of each loaf registers 155°, 50 minutes to 1 hour.

Remove the loaves from the grill and let rest 10 to 15 minutes. Once removed from the grill, the loaves will continue to cook, allowing them to reach the recommended 160° for ground beef and pork. Cut the loaves into slices and serve with the reserved sauce.

To make meat loaf sandwiches: Grill the meat loaf as above. Once cooled, place in refrigerator over night.

Remove from the refrigerator, cut the meat loaf into 3/4-inch-thick slices and slather both sides with some of the reserved sauce. Grill over direct low heat (250° to 350°), with the lid closed as much as possible, for 4 to 6 minutes or longer, turning once. Serve on sourdough bread with melted provolone cheese.

Osceola provides a fitness focus during Fourth of July Osceola provides an easy way to stay fit for the Fourth of July.

Osceola Chamber/Main Street (OCMS) invites the public to stay active and participate in the second annual Firecracker Fun Run. “The day of the fourth, nothing happens until eleven o’clock with the parade,” said Derek Lumsden, executive director of OCMS. “So, this gives a reason for people to get downtown early and be active. It gives them another event to do. Plus, it’s cool at that time of day. So, you’re not running into a lot of heat issues you might at another time.”

The Firecracker Fun Run is scheduled 7 a.m. Saturday, July 4, with registration starting at 6 a.m.

People can register online this year at www.activeworks.com and search for “firecracker.” The cost is $15 in advance of June 5, and after that date, the price increases to $20.

The course This year’s course will be the same course as last year. It starts at Mosaic’s parking lot across from Osceola’s fire station. It goes under the underpass, works its way to Biggy’s restaurant and then comes back to the downtown area and ends at Mosaic’s parking lot.

This is a family-friendly event, so strollers, wagons and more are encouraged.

Prizes If you’re an avid runner or walker, there’s also the chance to win prizes. The first three runners and walkers will be awarded in the 5K. The first one-mile walker across the finish line will also be awarded.

The Firecracker Fun Run has theme contests, including best stroller/ wagon and best fit of the theme.

This year’s Fourth of July theme is “Rockin’ The Square.” If someone wants to run a 5K in an Elvis costume, this would be the time to do it.

Lumsden said the fun run is a great way to stay active, while also having fun in the summer months.

“It’s just one of the things we’ve tried to do as a community from trying to get the trails going to having the new gyms open up,” he said. “There’s been a huge call for health and wellness and quality of life activities. So, we started this last year as way to sort of fill that summer gap.” AH

Lumsden said the first-ever Firecracker Fun Run went well last year.

“We had over a hundred people come out for a first-year event,” he said. “Starting that early on the fourth, it was fantastic.”

Free swimming available to every child Monday nights at Osceola pool

There’s no better time for a dip in the pool than the nice, hot summer months.

In Osceola, every child has a chance to enjoy the pool, even if it’s hard for their family to afford it.

The reason for this is the Fern Underwood Free Swim, a summer-long event that is sponsored by Clarke Community Development Corporation (CCDC).

From June 1 to Aug. 10, there is free swimming every Monday night from 5:30 to 8 p.m. It is on a first-come basis.

“I guess I see that as something that adds to growing up here, as a childhood memory.

You know, when were a kid, we could go swimming on Monday nights for free,” said Bill Trickey, executive director of CCDC. “Trying to make sure that everybody feels a part of the community.”

Originated Here’s how the Fern Underwood Free Swim originated. Underwood, a longtime Osceola resident, had concerns about the availability of the swimming pool to all the children in the community.

The idea came to her when she was volunteering in the school district.

She saw swimming as a great opportunity for children, and they shouldn’t be penalized if their family can’t easily afford the cost of using the pool.

“I just want to equalize opportunities for little kids, all that I can do to help,” Underwood said.

CCDC started swim passes a few years ago, and they still issue them to families. However, there were still concerns about administering the passes and making sure all Osceola children had access to the pool, regardless of family income.

One day, Trickey saw Underwood at Clarke County Hospital. Underwood told Trickey, “You know, I really want to make sure that every child in this community has a chance to swim at the swimming pool. You can make that happen, can’t you?”

Trickey’s response? “Of course.”

He began the work of discussing the issue with city and parks and recreation officials.

An idea began to form of “buying” a night of free swimming and naming it in Underwood’s honor.

Last year, the first-ever Fern Underwood Free Swim was set up on Monday nights.

The CCDC board decided buying weekly nights of free swim for approximately $5,000 was a worthwhile endeavor and approved the cost.

Second summer The free swim tradition has continued into its second summer. The only constraint is it is a firstcome basis until the pool reaches capacity.

“We want to make it so it was as simple for everybody as possible,” Trickey said.

Accessing the Fern Underwood Free Swim is pretty straightforward, children arrive at the pool and tell employees they’re here for the free swim. That’s it.

“It’s makes it easy for the employees because their only concern is — do we have enough space, are we getting full? And, as far as I understand, last year, they never turned anybody away,” Trickey said.

While the CCDC board hasn’t officially said the free swim will be an annual event every summer, Trickey said, “Just every year we’re going to address it, and as long as the money’s available, and it’s working OK, and we don’t hear any complaints, I will encourage the board to continue doing it.”

Underwood said she was happy to hear the first year of the free swim was successful.

“I wish it would spread to other communities so every little kid who wants to swim is able to, and every little kid who wants to play ball is able to,” Underwood said. AH

Clarke Area Arts Council Arts council provides artistic opportunities for Clarke County

The arts have a strong presence in Clarke County, and the reason for that is Clarke Area Arts Council (CAAC).

In 1971, a group of seven people organized Osceola Fine Arts Council. Four years later, it became a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation and was renamed Clarke Area Arts Council.

“I just pulled together anybody who I thought I knew who wanted to do it,” said Mary Ellen Kimball with CAAC. The purpose of the council was to provide an environment where professional and amateur artists and the public in the Clarke County area can meet on common ground and enjoy the arts.

This is a CAAC mission statement: “We believe the arts are essential, they are not an option.

They have a role to play in every one of the issues facing our county; attracting and retaining people, building our economy, welcoming diversity and providing a better lifestyle.”

What they do CAAC provides a lot to the south-central Iowa area community.

Each year, the arts council brings art exhibits to the area, sponsors “artists-in-the-schools,” conducts classes in various art subjects, invites guest artists to give workshops for the public and sponsors theatre and dance performances.

The council also awards two $500 student art scholarships, produces a community play or musical and organizes special programs or activities.

Clarke Area Arts Council Activities The council’s year ends with the annual membership meeting gala in April or early May. New officers are elected in May and no more meetings are scheduled for the summer.

Previously planned activities may continue through the summer but “future planning” starts in May and approved in September for the most part with other activities considered for approval during that period through the next April. The council likes to stay flexible so as not to miss any worthwhile projects.

Events the council does each year and will continue: • Awarding two scholarships for college students in the arts • Co-hosting with the library for events such as Duffy Hudson who did a George Burns show and a one-man enactment of “A Christmas Carol” this past year • Annual spring membership gala with featured guest artists • Funding artist-in-the school program to bring artists to teach local class, as kindergarten through 12th grade teachers find art programs that would benefit their students (money is allocated to bring Iowa Opera to the high school so far for next fall ) • Participate with the state architecture contest for elementary.

Every spring, the arts council hosts the annual spring gala, which also showcases the CAAC artist of the year. The 2015 artist of the year was Deb Jurshak. The 2014 artist of the year was Valerie Funk.

Events in the planning stage for this coming year: • A dinner or desert musical theater/small play with the long range plan for a major musical in the next couple of years • Dessert buffet with entertainment/local talent show • Readers theater

Members give their time, talent and financial support to bring arts to everyone in Clarke County.

Art classes for the public utilizing local artists as teachers, for example, painting — stained glass — charcoal drawings — poetry appreciation or poetry writing classes.

This school year, singer-songwriter Roger Day performed his “Dream Big” program for Clarke elementary students with 400 students in attendance. He was sponsored as a CAAC artist-in-the-school.

The council would welcome ideas from the public as to any classes of interest to them.

“I think the schools have benefited — the teachers and the kids. They still remember … our older kids had the first artist-in-the-school, and they remembered,” Kimball said.

Fitness center offers many opportunities for healthy body, mind

If you’re looking to stay motivated, exercise and get on the fast track to healthy living, there’s a place in Osceola for you — Johnson’s Elite Training (JET) fitness center.

“Everything that we try to do, we try to involve ourselves in the community,” said Shawn Johnson, owner. “So, you can kind of get the big franchise things, but they’re not necessarily connected with what’s going on, and we’ve already donated more than $4,000 in different types of memberships for charities and different events or fundraisers.”

The gym had a soft-opening in mid-December 2014. The gym offers goal-oriented training programs, but If you like to work out on your own, there’s plenty to do, as well.

Classes There are also has classes for people who like to work out in a group setting with an instructor to guide them. Some of the classes are: • Zumba • Suspension (Body weight strength-based course exercise) • Kickboxing • Hot yoga/Hot sculpt • Boot camp There are a total of four instructors for the fitness classes. Suspension has been the most popular course, so far.

For Foster, it’s about keeping the right energy with people.

“I think it’s awesome to be an instructor and just feel the energy in the room when people are going after the bag or just to listen to them as they’re on the suspension trainer,” she said. “I just think, in general, it’s fun to be around people and just seeing them make progress and see results, just getting to hear their excitement with things.”

If a person isn’t interested in working out in a class, but doesn’t want to work out alone, JET offers one-on-one training.

5Ks JET also has a strong presence in the Osceola community. It helped put on the second annual Race 4 Education in May. However, Johnson wanted to make the event more fun than just saying it was a 5K to help raise money for Clarke Community Elementary School to promote physical activity. The race evolved into the JETFAST Color Run. To help people stay motivated while reaching their fitness goals, Johnson said he likes to have giveaways and prizes. He also incorporates monthly assessments with workout training.

“I just had a lady do her reassessment, and she thought it was going to be bad news because the scale was going up,” he said. “But, she actually put on muscle and decreased her body fat by some. She was pleasantly surprised.”

“Once you try it, you’re like, ‘oh wow, that was a tough class,’ because you can kind of see instant changes from week to week, in the sense of I can walk my feet now more. I’m getting stronger,” Johnson said.

There’s still a lot more things to come at the fitness center, including more sections of bootcamp classes, a JETSTRONG tumbling class and grand prizes as an incentive for fitness goals.

“I think the reason why people like it is because it’s always challenging, but in a positive way,” she said. “So, it’s a great strength builder, core strengthener, so I think people just like that they’re getting a good workout. So, it’s worth the time to come in and do it. It’s fun.”

Johnson primarily instructs the boot camp.

“I love planks and things like that, where we’re working on better postural muscles,” he said. “My kind of philosophy on exercises is that we’re going to choose something that is appropriate — helps create better movers while reaching our goals.”

There’s also going to be a summer program will start that will help children prevent the summer slump. The gym is putting together a 50-minute class with 30 minutes of exercise followed by 20 minutes of in structural time.

In the summer months, it will be four days a week with two different educational tracks — math and reading.

“There’s just tons of brain benefits to exercising before learning, so it’s really kind of capitalizing on those advantages,” Johnson said. AH
