Owner Jennifer Welcher pushes baked goods, bed and breakfast this holiday season

“We open up for occasional sales, like the one we had for Halloween,” Welcher said.

On the baking end, Welcher works from Artistry House on Jackson and customers pick up orders there. She has no restrictions on sizes of orders but needs a few days’ notice – or a week’s notice around a holiday – to fulfill requests.

Tucked between homes on South Jackson Street is a renovated 1910 Victorian house painted light sage and white with rustic accents and adorned with floral arrangements and antiques.

“I’m always open for any kind of celebration – birthdays or whatever – pies for the holidays, stuff like that,” she said. “I do a lot of decorated sugar cookies and cookie baskets.”

Customers may choose from a list of pie flavors that includes apple, pecan, coconut cream, banana cream, key lime, lemon meringue, pumpkin and others.

Inside, owner Jennifer Welcher might be busy baking pies to fill special orders, or she might have the upstairs private suite rented out for a few days as a bed and breakfast.

Cupcakes come in a number of flavors, too, including lemon drop, red velvet, carrot, snowball, peanut butter cup, strawberry shortcake, butter pecan and chocolate tiramisu.

When she and her husband, John, purchased the once dilapidated house about six years ago, they had a vision for fixing it up and possibly selling it. Instead, the building became a business – and an outlet for Welcher’s creative tendencies.

Welcher also offers muffins and flavored brownies, such as turtle or peanut butter.

“I’ve always liked to bake and decorate, and actually, I’m kind of an artist and started out doing art. But, this community does not purchase art really well, so I kind of use my art skill in baking,” she said.

“We always enjoy the quality and design,” O’Hair said. “She is very flexible in working with my ideas and themes as well as dietary needs.”

The business, Artistry House on Jackson, has transformed from a full-time bakery, gift shop and bed and breakfast to a made-to-order bakery and bed and breakfast.

“I would really like to do more of an emphasis on my bed and breakfast upstairs and ordering the bakery items I have because I do well with those,” Welcher said. “I have just a few consigned things, some crafts, some art, some antiques – just a hodgepodge of different things like that right now until I figure out what I’m going to do with the little gift part because I don’t want it to be a full-blown bakery anymore.”

This holiday season, Welcher’s focus is filling multiple orders for pies, sugar cookies, cupcakes and more. She will open up to the public for a few days prior to Christmas for customers to shop for baked goods and gifts before the holiday hits.

MacKenzie O’Hair of Osceola is a regular buyer of Welcher’s cupcakes.

Welcher’s hand-decorated sugar cookies and cupcakes are one way her artistic abilities surface. But, creating them is time-consuming, especially with the number of orders placed around holidays.

“It’s one of those things that it’s good for my business, bad for my body and I’m glad when it’s over,” Welcher said. “But, I can make other people’s holidays easier for them.”

Welcher provides the fried apple pie on the menu at The Iron Horse in Osceola, which her daughter owns. She also has plans to sell her pies, and possibly other items, at Fareway.

On the bed and breakfast end, Artistry House on Jackson has a complete suite upstairs with a private entrance, bedroom, bathroom, living area and kitchenette. Guests may have homemade breakfast in the morning.

The suite is available for $80 for one or two people and an additional $15 per person after that. At least five people can comfortably stay.

Historians generally agree that almonds and dates, both mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible, were among the earliest cultivated foods. The earliest varieties of almonds were found in China carried by traders down the ancient silk road to Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. Almonds were introduced to California in the mid 1700s. The state’s 6,000 almond growers produce 100 percent of the commercial domestic supply and 80 percent of the world’s supply. Cookies, bars and roasted almonds are included in today’s recipes. Smakelijk eten!

DUTCH LETTER BARS 1 cup butter, softened 1 can almond paste (8 oz) 2 eggs plus 1 egg yolk (reserve the egg white) 1 1/2 cup sugar 2 cups flour 2 tsp. almond extract 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract sliced almonds coarse sugar Preheat oven to 325°. Cream butter, almond paste, sugar and eggs until blended. Add almond and vanilla extracts, blend. Add flour and mix.

Spread in 9 x 13 inch pan. Brush with beaten egg white. Sprinkle with sliced almonds and coarse sugar. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown. Do not overbake.

HONEY CRYSTAL ALMONDS 2 cups whole natural almonds 1/4 cup honey 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup turbinado sugar Spread almonds in a shallow pan.

Place in cold oven; turn oven to 350° and roast 12 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until well roasted. Over medium heat in medium saucepan, heat honey and butter to boiling. Reduce heat to medium low, simmer 2 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add almonds; simmer and stir 2 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer almonds to baking sheet lined with parchment paper or waxed paper; spread in single layer and cool slightly. Toss almonds with sugar to coat using a medium plastic food storage bag.

ALMOND AND HONEY COOKIE 1/2 cup butter 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup honey 1 egg 1 tsp. vanilla 1 1/2 cup flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 cup almonds, chopped Preheat oven to 400°. Cream together the butter, sugar, honey and egg.

Add the vanilla, blend. Combine flour, baking powder and baking soda; add the almonds to the flour mixture and blend. Add flour mixture to butter mixture and mix well. Place the cookie mixture on a buttered cookie sheet by spoonfuls. Add a slivered almond to the top of each cookie before baking. Bake for 12-15 minutes.

ALMOND COOKIES 1 cup butter 3/4 cup sugar 1 tsp. pure almond extract 2 cups flour 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt Glaze: 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 tsp. pure almond extract 2 - 3 tsp. water In a bowl blend the butter, sugar, and almond extract. In a separate bowl mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the flour mixture 2 tablespoons at a time to the butter mixture until completely combined.

The dough will be stiff.

Roll into small balls and flatten slightly. Cook for 7 minutes only (they will not look done) at 400° on a lightly greased pan or parchment lined pan. Cool cookies until they are just warm and place sliced almonds on top of each cookie.

For the glaze: Combine powdered sugar, almond extract, and water.

Drizzle a spoonful of glaze on top of the almonds and cookie.

The Snowflake Ball is an evening of dancing dedicated to helping girls feel special right before Valentine’s Day. As the annual father-daughter style event is always the first Friday in February, it will be held Friday, Feb. 5, from about 6 to 9 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge in Osceola.

“It’s a nice way to have fathers and daughters bond,” said Derek Lumsden, Osceola Chamber Main Street executive director. “A lot of fathers don’t get to do things with their daughters necessarily on Valentine’s Day, so they get to do something with them at another time that still allows the girl to feel special and have special bonding time with their fathers or significant male figures in their lives.”

Entry is $5 per person, payable at the door.

“It’s a pretty simple evening,” Lumsden said. “Everybody shows up, gets their hand stamped, and then they can enjoy the evening. We do dancing, we have a light snack and they get a commemorative photo at our photo booth – something to take home.”

There will be a charge of $2 if attendees want additional photos from the booth.

Last year, Jeff Mallory, Osceola Hy-Vee store director, took his now 7-year-old daughter, Addison, to the Snowflake Ball, and he is taking her again this year.

“Addison and I always have what we call Daddy-Addi time – whether we go on a shopping trip or to a movie or just have a little date, something like that,” Mallory said. “With this, we had just moved to town, so it was a good opportunity for us to meet other people. And, it’s just a good thing to get dads, uncles, grandpas, brothers, whatever out of the house in a social setting with their daughter, niece or grandchild.”

Another fun part of the evening, especially for the girls, is the opportunity to dress up, Mallory said.

“The girls love putting on their dresses, and it’s cool seeing dads that might not ever wear a tie or suit. It feels like they’re going to their own ball,” he said. “There’s not a lot of options to go do stuff like that at an affordable price, so that made it great, too.”

Ron Schlichte of Osceola also took his daughter, 9-year-old Abbie, to the Snowflake Ball last year. He said the importance of the event was spending time with his daughter.

“The best part of the dance was seeing the joy on my daughter’s face – seeing her happy,” Schlichte said.

Last year, about 180 people attended the Snowflake Ball. Lumsden said the event sometimes draws people from surrounding communities, including Murray, Leon, Chariton and Creston.

“I think it’s a good way to get people out and about, especially in the wintertime when the weather can be a little bit off,” Lumsden said. “It’s just a way to get out and be active at a time when it’s hard to find things to do.

And, we have a corresponding one that we started last spring called the Mom Prom, which does the same thing for mothers and sons. Last year, it was held Mother’s Day weekend; we’re not for sure yet when it will be held this year.” KH

Autumn is in the air.

But, just because fall has arrived doesn’t mean it’s time to stop caring for your lawn.

There are several practices that can be done in the fall that will improve your lawn by the time spring rolls around.

Rychnovsky Lawn and Chesnut Lawn and Landscape both provide lawn care and snow-removal services in the Osceola area.

Both Ryan Rychnovsky and Jack Chesnut agree good fall lawn-care practices include maintaining weed control, fertilizing and aeration.

“Those are three important things,” Rychnovsky said. “The core aeration is to alleviate compaction and allow the root system to take in nutrients and moisture better.”

“A basic rundown is you’re going to want to spray for broadleaf and do any overseeding in the fall,” Chesnut added. “Late fall would be your aeration and probably a winterizer fertilizer. The fertilizer is usually a slowrelease fertilizer that’s put on when the grass is either almost dormant or it is dormant. It feeds the grass so it’s ready to go in the spring.”

Aeration is a process that involves a machine that uses the equivalent to a piece of pipe, pushing the pipe into the ground and pulling out a core of soil. It leaves a hole in the ground and drops the core of soil on top of the grass.

The holes left in the ground help air, nutrients and water get into the ground, which loosens the ground and allows for better root growth. Soil from the cores left on top then melt into the thatch and decompose the thatch layer.

“Aeration and leaf control are probably the two most common services or fall tasks that may get overlooked,” Rychnovsky said.

Leaf removal is another key component of maintaining a healthy lawn in the fall months.

“Leaf removal would be nice for mulching,” Chesnut said. “Any heavy leaf cover on the ground is hard on the turf. It cuts down on the oxygen. It would probably be better to leave your grass mowed a hair higher than you would the rest of the year. The extra length can help it over winter.”

Fall lawn care will soon transition into winter snow removal.

Snow removal According to Rychnovsky, being prepared is one of the biggest keys to snow removal.

“Generally speaking, we promote being ahead of the game or not allowing the snow to accumulate, whether that’s our services or the homeowner themselves, ... so you don’t end up with an ice pack,” Rychnovsky said.

“The sooner you can get out and remove the snow after the snow event is compete, it’s much easier to get a good final product and a clean surface.”

As snow is walked over and compacted, it can turn into an ice pack, making its removal more difficult.

Chesnut said some people use de-icer products. He recommends making sure de-icer products are ecofriendly, as some de-icers will damage turf.

“They do cause damage compared to regular rock salts,” Chesnut said. “They do make some eco-friendly de-icers if you’re treating sidewalks around turf grass.”

Another thing to pay attention to, Rychnovsky said, is not putting down an unnecessary amount of icemelting product, which could harm the environment.

“We usually don’t push snow until it’s a couple of inches accumulation,” Chesnut said. “We usually do commercial services first and then residential stuff we may have. De-icer is applied when it’s finished snowing and the last bit of snow is cleared off.”

Looking ahead Rychnovsky and Chesnut agree homeowners should think ahead to the spring months, as well.

“First thing we do is pick up any debris, anything that may have fallen over the wintertime that nobody wanted to mess with in the cold,” Chesnut said. “Dethatching is something to do early spring before the grass even greens up. If it’s overthatched, that prevents the grass from coming up out of the ground.”

Rychnovsky suggests an early spring fertilization with a pre-emergent herbicide for crab grass that will impede the growth of grass-like weeds.

“It’s common to get an influx of your early spring broadleafs, such as dandelions, so you might prepare for spring broadleaf control before dandelions are able to grow their seed and create a secondary crop,” Rychnovsky said. SV

Holiday Brilliance

A new Christmas Cutie contest for children and the return of the lighted Christmas parade after its absence will be the main updates to this year’s Holiday Brilliance in Osceola.

“It’s a kickoff for the Christmas season, and people can get started on their Christmas shopping,” said Samantha Horton, Osceola Chamber Main Street (OCMS) events coordinator.

Shopping will open at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, with festivities beginning at 4 p.m. The evening will wrap up around 8 p.m.

Holiday shoppers may visit the vendor fair located in the Osceola Senior Center or do local shopping on and near the square. Last year, about 20 vendors participated.

“There will be a Christmas-themed contest for all the storefronts to display holiday cheer, and they will be awarded with a prize of $150 value from the design committee through the Chamber,” Horton said.

To help encourage more local shopping, all businesses – open or not – are asked to decorate for the holiday season.

This year’s cook-off will feature soup and baked goods. The contest is free for contestants, and attendees may purchase a $5 wristband to try any of the soups or baked goods. The cook-off is planned from 4 to 7 p.m. at the American Legion. A panel of judges and public votes will determine the winners of the cook-off.

Also beginning at 4 p.m., children may have their photos taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus on the square in the Santa House by the bandstand. Pictures will be taken from 4 to 5 p.m. and again after the lighting of the courthouse lawn until 8 p.m. Mrs. Claus will also read “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” followed by carolers from Clarke Community Schools.

Tractor sleigh rides will be offered from 4 p.m. until about 7:30 p.m.

The Christmas Cutie contest also begins at 4 p.m. on the bandstand, and OCMS staff were still determining the age range as of early November.

Both girls and boys can participate, and the winner will be the child with the best holiday outfit.

“We’re wanting everybody to dress their kids up for the holidays,” Horton said. “There will be a winner for both baked goods and soup that will be announced at the same time as the Christmas Cutie contest, and the Christmas Cutie winner will be in the lighted Christmas parade.”

Derek Lumsden, OCMS executive director, said the addition of the contest was also a means of getting more people involved in Holiday Brilliance.

“We figured if there was a way to bring more people down, including kids, and keep them involved with several different activities, we should do that,” Lumsden said. “It might be a way that parents could come down, enjoy some shopping, enjoy the festivities and enjoy a holiday festival before they get too crazy with holiday shopping and family events.”

The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. and some floats will receive prizes.

The tree and lawn lighting will be directly after the parade, around 6:30 p.m.

“We’re hoping to really push the lighted Christmas parade,” Horton said. “It’s been quite a few years since we’ve had it, and we’re hoping everybody gets in the holiday spirit and jumps in on that.”

The gleam of children’s smiles and elation in their voices are what drive Karon Keefe-Dunbar to dress up as Mrs. Claus year after year.

For more than 12 years, she has volunteered her time and dressed up alongside Santa to take pictures with children for holiday events hosted by Osceola Chamber Main Street (OCMS), including the annual Holiday Brilliance event.

She has also dressed up for children to visit Santa and Mrs. Claus at Wal-Mart locations she has worked at. And, one year, she made a stop in the extended-care facility at Clarke County Hospital.

“One time, I wore the costume to work one day because my boss let me. I was at the Wal-Mart in Grimes, and some little kid walked in the door at the other end of the store and goes, ‘Mommy, look! Mrs. Santa Claus shops at Wal-Mart.’ I about died laughing,” Keefe-Dunbar recalled. “The little kids just love it.”

She also remembers vividly a time when two young girls came up to her, and their mother asked if her daughters could take a photo with Keefe-Dunbar, who agreed.

“I told the girls, ‘I’m understanding from what Santa told me that you two have been pretty good this year,’ and they said, ‘Yes, we have! Yes, we have!’

So, I said, ‘He’s got your address and your lists, so he’ll be around your house for Christmas.’

They were all, ‘Oh, thank you!’” Keefe-Dunbar said.

She looks forward to dressing up for this year’s Holiday Brilliance, which will be Saturday, Dec. 3. Pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, Keefe-Dunbar, will be taken from 4 to 5 p.m. and again after the lighting of the courthouse lawn until 8 p.m. Keefe-Dunbar will also read “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” to children.

Pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus has been a part of Holiday Brilliance for at least a decade, said Derek Lumsden, OCMS executive director.

“I think it makes it a much more family-friendly atmosphere,” Lumsden said. “Kids sort of have this awe of the season to see Santa and Mrs. Claus and it becomes more real for them.”

Keefe-Dunbar, 39, of Osceola said while she typically dresses up for OCMS events or at WalMart, she would be interested in participating in other events, too.

After the fire two years ago things looked bleak.
