Though Tanya Hardy bakes pies solely for fun, fresh ingredients are important to her. She’ll go the extra mile to find fresh fruit, whether it’s picking berries from a local orchard or going out into the woods.

“It’s kind of a labor of love,” Hardy said. “I like the taste of wild berries, and you only get a few ticks,” she joked.

Homemade pie-making has been passed down for generations in her family. Her grandmother, who was born in 1908, baked pies the majority of her life. Then Hardy’s mother began pie-making, and for several years, Hardy has done the same alongside her sister.

Now, Hardy has passed down her knowledge and love for pies to her 18-year-old daughter Taylor.

Tammy Morris, a personal banker at Clarke County State Bank, loves Hardy’s pies. Her favorite is one with mixed berries.

“But you can’t go wrong with any of them,” Morris said. “Her crust is amazing; it’s flaky with a nice flavor.”

Hardy stays busy as the fifth- and sixth-grade band teacher at Clarke Elementary School and as a wife and mother of three. Still, she makes time to bake pies as a means of relaxation.

If she isn’t baking for family, she’s entering pies in the Iowa State Fair Machine Shed and Gold Medal Flour Pies competition. She has entered pies at the state fair since 2009, and recently, she also began entering jams and jellies.

“It’s a hobby, but I think sometimes my husband and kids think it’s an obsession,” Hardy joked.

After a competition, Hardy often donates the pies so they don’t go to waste.

Last year, she submitted 10 pies, and eight of them won awards.

PEANUT BUTTER PIE Bottom crust: 16 chocolate graham crackers, crushed 3 tablespoons sugar 1/2 cup butter Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Melt the butter in a large sauce pan. Add the graham crackers and sugar. Press the mixture into a 9-inch pie pan. Bake for 8 minutes or until lightly brown.

Whipped cream: 1 1/2 cups whipping cream 6 tablespoons sugar 3/4 teaspoon vanilla Beat the whipping cream, vanilla and sugar until soft peaks form.

Pie filling: 1 cup powdered sugar 1 cup creamy peanut butter 8 ounces cream cheese 1 snack size Butterfinger, crushed whipped cream Cream the peanut butter, cream cheese and powdered sugar in a mixing bowl until smooth and creamy. Fold in the whipped cream. Place the mixture in the crust and refrigerate for 4 hours or until it is set. Top with whipped cream and crushed Butterfinger.

“If the contest is at 10 on a Saturday morning, my sister and I will start baking at 3 or 4 (p.m.) Friday and bake all night until the competition,” Hardy said.

“We see who can get the most ribbons, so it’s a friendly competition.”

Hardy said there are likely two main reasons people enjoy her pies: freshly picked fruit and homemade crust. One tip she has for a flakier, tastier crust is, five minutes before a pie is done baking, put some halfand-half or milk on top of the pie using a brush, and then sprinkle it with sugar cane crystals.

Hardy makes all types of pies, from wild black raspberry to lemon meringue. She frequently tries out new recipes to enter at the state fair, and her family serves as her taste testers.

“When I try a new recipe, I’ll follow it, but then I’ll change things if we don’t like the way it tastes,” she said. KH

We b s t e r. . . a l s o known as a blondie brownie or bar...is a rich, sweet dessert bar made from flour, brown sugar, butter, eggs, baking powder, and vanilla. They may also contain walnuts or pecans. These recipes contain mashed bananas, pecans and espresso beans.

BANANA BLONDIES 1/2 cup butter, melted and if desired browned 1 cup light brown sugar 1 egg 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla 1/4 tsp. salt 1 cup flour 1/2 cup mashed banana (1 medium banana) Brown Sugar Frosting 1/4 cup butter 1/2 cup light brown sugar 2 Tbsp. milk 1 cup powdered sugar Preheat oven to 350 . Line an 8x8 baking dish with foil and spray with cooking spray. Set aside.

In bowl of stand mixer combine melted (or browned) butter and sugar. Mix until combined.

Add in egg and vanilla and continue mixing until incorporated. Stir in salt, flour and banana until batter is smooth and even. Spread in prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes until center is set. Transfer pan to wire rack to cool. Frost the blondies when they are mostly cooled.

Brown Sugar Frosting - In a medium saucepan melt butter. Add brown sugar and milk and stir until mixture comes to just a boil. Remove from heat, allow to cool for 5 minutes. Stir in powdered sugar with a whisk. Spread on top of blondies and allow frosting to set and blondies to cool completely before cutting into squares.

WHOLE GRAIN BLONDIES WITH PECANS AND ESPRESSO BEANS 8 Tbsp. unsalted butter 1 cup packed light brown sugar 1 1/2 cups white whole-wheat flour or

all-purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. salt 2 large eggs, lightly beaten 2 Tbsp. vanilla extract 3/4 cup chopped hazelnuts 3/4 cup chopped espresso beans

Preheat oven to 350. Line a 9-by-13-inch baking pan with parchment paper or foil, allowing it to slightly overhang opposite edges. Coat with cooking spray. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook, swirling often, until fragrant and starting to brown, 4 to 5 minutes.

Remove from the heat. Whisk in brown sugar; let cool for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk eggs and vanilla into the cooled butter mixture until well combined. Add the flour mixture in two additions, gently folding until just combined.

Reserve 2 tablespoons each hazelnuts and chopped espresso beans; fold the remaining hazelnuts and chopped espresso beans into the batter. Evenly spread the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle the reserved hazelnuts and chopped espresso beans. Bake the blondies until light brown around the edges, 18 to 22 minutes. They will appear slightly underbaked in the center; but will firm up as they cool. Let cool completely in the pan on a wire rack, about 2 hours. To cut, grab the overhanging parchment or foil and transfer the whole batch to a cutting board, then cut into 24 bars. I drizzled the blondies with melted dark chocolate once they were cooled.

That’s why two Osceola banks are making it easier for s ju residents to stash their holiday cash year-round using some unique s. g m n i pstart v savings accounts. their holiday sa Christmas Club accounts, offered by many banks and credit unions around the country, give shoppers the opportunity to gradually put back money for the holiday season. These accounts, which often start in late fall or early winter, then distribute the funds in the weeks preceding Thanksgiving and Christmas. They also add an incentive, like interest or a one-time payment match, as a bonus.

“We have some people who get a check for $80 and some who get a check for $2,000 to $3,000. It just depends on what they want to save for,” Ogbourne said.

Both Webster and Ogbourne also said they use the club accounts at their respective banks themselves.

Osceola banks offering these accounts are American State Bank (ASB) “Pretty much everybody here has it,” Webster said. IR and Clarke County State Bank (CCSB). Local users and bank workers alike say it offers an opportunity for people to save without feeling like they’re saving.

If you’re interested Rhonda Webster, direct deposit service manager at ASB, said the bank in opening a Christmas Club account has 50 to 75 customers with Christmas Club accounts. At ASB, account of your own, here is some more information: holders can set up automatic transfers from their savings or checking accounts on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis. Customers then American State Bank receive an interest rate of 0.5 percent on their final balance.

Location | 101 N. Main St., Osceola Webster said she hears customers say they enjoy these accounts because they have a hard time putting aside money for Christmas every year.

“They said it’s kind of like hidden money for them,” Webster said.

Diane Ogbourne, director of business development at CCSB, said she also hears positive reviews from her customers, who enjoy putting a small amount of money away and receiving a nice check near the shopping season.

“It can be such a stressful time for people, we thought if we could do something to help them out a little bit and enjoy their shopping a little more, we’d do that,” Ogbourne said.

Diane Ogbourne CCSB’s Christmas Club account is open to both CCSB account holders and those without CCSB accounts.

Customers set up the account to make automatic withdrawals from their checking or savings account, or they can bring in contributions at their leisure. The account minimum is $25. Customers receive interest on their account when the bank sends them a check Nov. 1. Ogbourne said there is no penalty for making withdrawals from this account.

HOLIDAY Leaves and pumpkins and gourds, oh my!

Just walk around the square in Osceola and you will see businesses that are festive for fall.

First up is a go-to place for seasonal decor — Flowers ‘N More.

Ronda Audlehelm with Flowers ‘N More said people like fall wreaths on their doors, as well as baskets, which can incorporate flowers, gourds, pumpkins and berries.

“Just the real natural look is in, where it looks like you just plopped your flowers in the vase,” Audlehelm said.

Darker tones such as burgundy, rust, brown and orange are also in style.

The most popular type of flower during these months is the sunflower.

“They make such a statement, they’re just so big and pretty,” Audlehelm said.

In close proximity to Flowers ‘N More is Stoney Oak Properties.

Paula McClaflin with Stoney Oak Properties has made sure the business’ fall decor is unique with incorporating indoor and outdoor designs. One reason for this is McClaflin loves to decorate.

“I like people to see the decorations that are up on the square and pretty visible,” she said. “It enhances the ambiance around the square,” she said.

“I just want everybody to feel the season,”…

Even though McClaflin’s business is not retail, she said it was important to have her business help with the festive look of the season.

“Everybody loves it,” she said.

On the opposite side of the square, there’s another building that stands out because of its window decorations — Mosaic’s Expanding Horizons.

Depending on what season of the year it is, there is a special painting on the windows.

For Halloween, it was ghosts in a graveyard.

“I just want everybody to feel the season,” said Gwen Morris with Expanding Horizons.

“I mean, I like to make sure that everybody feels Halloween. Christmas will be the same way. We try to just make the clients feel the spirit of the holiday.”

The window painting will stay up for awhile as it gets closer to the Thanksgiving holiday.

However, people can expect to see more turkeys and pumpkins throughout the place in November, and then Christmas-themed decorations throughout the month of December.

“It comes along as it gets inspired in our minds, and the clients also help us,” Morris said.

Local businesses get into the spirit of the season She said they’ve had some compliments on the window paintings and children will stop by to view it.

“They stop and look at our windows and I say, ‘What are you doing?’ (The girl) replies, ‘Oh, we always look because you always do such cute things on the windows,’” Morris said.

Before people know it, fall will quickly turn into winter and then Christmas will be right around the corner.

Last year, Osceola Chamber Main Street (OCMS) bought holiday decorations for the courthouse lawn.

“Holiday Brilliance gets harder and harder to do every year, just because fewer businesses put out lights and it takes a lot more time and effort to get them up in the trees and around the bandstand, so we bought some ground standing ones,” said Derek Lumsden, OCMS executive director.

The lights are made into different images — candy canes, a giant banner that states ‘Merry Christmas,’ holiday presents and Christmas trees.

“There’s an odd mix of them,” Lumsden said.

The holiday banner will most likely be used as a gateway to the courthouse lawn on the southeast corner. The decorations will also be found near the bandstand and flower beds.

This is the first year the big holiday decorations will be put on the courthouse lawn.

They were purchased too late in the year last year to be used in time for the holidays.

The decorative trees Salford made for OCMS in previous years will also be put on the courthouse lawn.

More winter

At Expanding Horizons, people can expect to see snowflake decorations during the winter months.

A Christmas tree and holiday lights are already in the works at Stoney Oak Properties.

Audlehelm said poinsettias and wreaths sell well at Flowers ‘N More as it gets closer to the winter holiday. Snowmen are also a top seller.

“You can lay them out through February,” she said. “They’re more versatile.” AH

A thudding sound follows and pins clack as they fall.

These are the sounds that fill the air at Alley Bowl in Osceola.

Eric McClure and Mike Lewis are both familiar with the sounds, sights “I’d rather bowl on that than wood,” Lewis said. and smells of the local bowling alley.

Lewis, 27, is the mechanic at Alley Bowl. He participates on four bowling “Just have fun with it. McClure said he tries to bowl quite a bit to maintain his game at Alley Bowl, where the lanes are wood with a lane shield overlay.

“I try and bowl a lot to keep my game up to what I would call my expectations,” McClure said. “You could say it (synthetic overlay) does help me to bowl better because I can go in knowing what kind of conditions I’ll be facing, and how they’ll play out each game.”

The shield overlay allows the ball to have a truer reaction to the oil pattern on the lanes because the wood tends to dry out faster, which causes friction on the bowling ball, which Lewis agrees with McClure on.

“It’s just fun, a good experience. There are fun people to be around,” Lewis said. “There’s a good atmosphere here, so that’s why I love it.”

Lewis has bowled two 300 games and reached a 700 series.

at the Harvest Barn Old favorites, new debuts mark this holiday season

If you’re cruising down Highway 34 east of Osceola on a beautiful fall day, there’s one place you can expect to find a big crowd of people — the Harvest Barn Marketplace.

It is owned by the Boyer family of Weldon, with husband and wife Jason and Amy Boyer at the helm.

Amy attributed their popularity to longevity with a slow and steady growth.

“Every year it gets busier, and I think we’re in a small area, small population, so I think it’s just taken a long time for word of mouth, and that has been our biggest help,” Amy said. “It’s just people telling and experiencing that they’ve got to come out. Then, they’ll tell and pass it on.”

What you’ll find

At the Harvest Barn, customers looking for fun and adventure can expect to find a pumpkin patch, corn maze and fun farm.

Inside the two-story barn, which dates back to the early 1930s, there are hand-poured candles with holiday fragrances, fudge made straight from the kitchen, Harvest Barn beef sticks, gourmet Milton Creamery cheeses, fruit salsas, jams, coffees and candies, Iowa

wines, all natural farm raised beef and pork, fall and holiday decor and gift baskets. Customers can choose from already made basket or get a custom made one.

The Harvest Barn has been doing holiday gift baskets since they started the business 15 years ago, and this year, they are debuting a “barn” gift box. This means it will be easier to ship and has their “brand” on it.

The barn gift box is big enough to have two layers of items in it, with a “loft” piece separating the levels.

“We are always looking for food products that kind of fit the masses, that people like, that are unique, though. But, taste really yummy,” Amy said.

Fall season

The early weeks of fall 2015 season had beautiful weather, and it has kept the employees at the Harvest Barn busy.

Even when it’s overcast, though, the parking lot is still crowded with rows of cars and people wanting to visit. This year, the Harvest Barn’s last day of the season is Dec. 23.

Jason said part of what sets the Harvest Barn apart from other pumpkin patches in the central Iowa area is the historic barn itself.

When speaking about the 15th anniversary of the business, he even became a little emotional.

“It has its ups and downs, but some of our customers who have been regulars from the day we opened our door have kind of made it all worth it,” Jason said. “ … We’ve been here long enough we’re on our second generation of kids. The kids who started coming here when we were first here are bringing their kids.”

If a customer ventures up the stairs to the second level of the barn, he or she can find a plethora of Christmas items on the top level.

There’s even a special guest who shows up at the Harvest Barn every Sunday in December right up until Christmas — Santa Claus.

Santa Claus has a special area for him in the upstairs of the barn.

“As soon as we have our first frost and it drops into the 40s, Christmas is amazing … and people shop earlier for the holidays all the time,” Amy said. AH
