It may have taken many years, but Shane Simpson has fulfilled a promise he made to his father.

When Shane was younger, he joined the United States Marine Corps (USMC) but also told his father he would go to college after his service.

On May 14, Shane walked across the stage at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in religion with summa cum laude honors. The degree was conferred in 2015.

“Two things really drove me,” said Shane of Osceola. “One was the promise. Two was I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. … Even though he’s not around to verify it or validate it, I felt like I needed to keep my word.”

Shane’s father died in 2001. Now, not only has Shane fulfilled his promise, but he has taken it a step further.

He is currently in a graduate degree program at Liberty University and will complete his master’s degree in theology in December.

However, the Simpsons decided to start their family early, and school was put on the back burner. She always wanted to go back for a degree, especially to set an important example for their children.

“We couldn’t go through our whole life telling our kids, ‘You need to go to college,’ and not go ourselves,” Elizabeth said.

The husband and wife team walked across the stage during the spring commencement ceremony. In fact, this was the first time Shane was ever available to walk across a stage in a cap and gown and receive a diploma.

When Shane was 18 years old, he graduated from Gadsden High School in Alabama. During the last semester of his senior year, his father had a heart attack.

This prompted a move to Arizona to be closer to family, which meant Shane graduated early and missed his high school graduation ceremony.

“Overdue,” was the word Shane said to describe how he felt during those moments on the stage at Liberty University.

SHERIFF’S REPORT David Lee Hobbs of Weldon reported a Dune buggy, VW motor, two fenders and one hood for a 1973 Chevrolet Nova were taken from a farm building between midnight June 12 and 7 p.m.

June 19.

According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s report, another car had been moved in what appeared to be an attempt to get that vehicle out of the building, also.

Hobbs is making a list of other items that were also missing, as well as bringing the title to the Dune buggy to the sheriff’s office.

Loss estimate is $3,300.

—————— On June 24, a woman reported she had been assaulted at her residence in Murray by Herbert Ralph Williams at approximately 11 a.m. April 24.

According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s report, the woman said Williams grabbed both of her arms and was yelling at her about where she had been that day. As a result of Williams’ actions, the woman had pictures of bruises and red marks on both of her arms.

Charges have been filed on Williams for assault.

—————— Charity Alice Arnett of Lubbock, Texas, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of prescription drugs noon June 26.

Arnett was released from

Clarke County Jail by the courts.

—————— Robert Lee Rosenbalm of Woodburn reported someone had entered his property without permission between June 18 and June 25 and taken a 1995 Yamaha motorcycle 80CC. Loss estimate is $1,500.

—————— Frank Kevin Thompson Jr., 24, of Ottumwa was charged with probation violation noon June 29.

The original date of the offense is May 10.

Thompson was being held in Clarke County Jail waiting to appear in court on the charges.

—————— On June 28, Ron and Virginia Ogan of Osceola reported a driveway seal coat scam.

According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s report, Virginia Ogan hired two men to seal coat and resurface. The Ogans paid the men in cash for the project. The two men sprayed a rubber coating on the driveway and promised to return.

The Ogans have called the number given to them several times to ask when they were returning to finish the job. They haven’t been able to make contact with the men. The two men were driving a new red Dodge pickup and the vehicle had a gas-fired heating applicator in the box of the pickup.

Loss estimate is $1,600.

Iowa weekly fuel update, outlook Average retail gasoline prices in Iowa have fallen 2.9 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.27/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 2,036 gas outlets in Iowa.

This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.26/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Iowa during the past week, prices recently were 41.5 cents per gallon lower than the same day one year ago and are 4.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 10.0 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 50.7 cents per gallon lower than this day one year ago.

According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on July 5 in Iowa have ranged widely over the last five years: $2.69/g in 2015, $3.56/g in 2014, $3.42/g in 2013, $3.33/g in 2012 and $3.50/g in 2011.

Areas nearby Iowa and their current gas price climate: Quad Cities — $2.18/g, down 1.3 cents per gallon from last week’s $2.20/g.

Des Moines — $2.43/g, down 3.3 cents per gallon from last week’s $2.46/g.

“Yesterday’s gas prices ended just as GasBuddy predicted a week ago: $2.27 per gallon nationally,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum

analyst for GasBuddy.

“While prices have come down, we now head to the time of year when hurricane season enters the picture. In the last couple of years we have seen minimal to no disruption as hurricane season largely went by with no major storms that hit land. Should we see a major hurricane enter the Gulf, gas prices may react. For the week ahead, expect much of the country to see prices continue to trickle lower while the Great Lakes states may see their first price increase in weeks as stations have undercut each other to the point where they begin losing money.”

“Any way you slice it, this summer has featured the cheapest Memorial Day, July 4 and perhaps Labor Day in the last eleven years, and motorists have been responding by hitting the roads in record numbers, according to a GasBuddy study before the summer driving season began,” DeHaan added.

ACCIDENT An accident was reported 8:58 p.m. June 26 in the 3300 block of McComb Street.

According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s report, Colton Douglas Hatfield, 21, of Leon, driving a 1993 Chrysler west on McComb Street, swerved to miss

a deer in the road. Hatfield lost control of the vehicle and entered the north ditch. Hatfield and a passenger were not wearing seat belts and were transported to Clarke County Hospital for minor injuries.

Damage estimate is $1,000.

Clarke elementary student wins at regional poster contest Each year, NACD holds a poster competition by grade (kindergarten-first grade, second-third, fourthsixth, seventh-ninth, and 10th-12th) to choose the art that will accompany the year’s theme.

The poster contest is open to public, private, and home-schooled students.

This year’s theme for the 2016 conservation poster contest was “We All Need Trees.”

Participation was down this year because of area spring breaks during the month the posters were due, but Clarke County Soil and Water Conservation District hopes next year there will be a larger turnout.

This year’s participants will receive a coupon for a free food item from Casey’s.

The top winner in each division is sent on to compete at the regional level.

There are nine regions that encompass the 99 counties of Iowa.

Region 8 is comprised of 10 counties, with only one winner from each age division being chosen.

Clarke County had two district winners that were sent to compete regionally.

Out of those, there was one who placed first in their age division. Regional winners were officially announced last week and will receive a certificate and a check for $35.

Alyssa Kent, who was a third grade student at Clarke Community Elementary School, won in the second-third grade division.

State winners were chosen from the regional finalists and will receive a certificate and a check for $50 and be on display at the 2016 annual conference in August. They will then be submitted to the national poster contest for consideration for a national award and to be displayed at the 2017 NACD annual meeting in February.

Congratulations to Kent and Clarke County SWCD hopes to see more poster entries from the kindergarten through 12th grade students next year.

Lorna Marie (Stewart) Cochran was born Nov. 5, 1925, after her parent’s Lee and F r e d a Stewart’s Cochran marriage in July 1925.

She was the oldest child of nine - her siblings were Reva, Rexine, Betty, Dorothy, Raymond, Eugene, Joan (pronounced Jo-Ann) and Harry, who died in infancy.

Lorna’s first memory was of being on bottom land near the main branch of Medicine Creek in Wayne County. She attended Sewell school until fifth grade; she graduated eighth grade at Logchain School after a move by her family. Lorna loved reading, her favorite subject, and read voraciously throughout her life, passing

Her mother, Freda, succumbed to breast cancer when Lorna was 14-years of age. At that time, she took over the care of her seven younger siblings. In order to sew clothes for her family, Lorna helped her father pick corn in order to get money to buy a sewing machine. At the age of 24, she left home after her father’s remarriage to Viola Jennings.

She moved to Chariton and worked at the Quality Bakery and the telephone office before her marriage to Ross Cochran July 12, 1953.

To this marriage were born Carol in 1954 and Harley in 1955. Lorna and Ross worked hard on the family farm – she with gardening, baking, sewing, cooking for family and work crews and raising chickens. She was very active in Lucas Presbyterian Church where she and her family worshipped and also in the PTA. When her children were older, she worked at Woolworth’s in Chariton and later at Lucas Products. She also had

her own upholstery business for a number of years.

Lorna also volunteered her time and energy to the senior citizens’ center and John L. Lewis Museum.

Family was important to Lorna. She was a strong presence in both her immediate and extended family, and always made an effort to attend events and reunions. She instilled a “can-do” attitude in her children and, even in her most difficult times, shared a positive outlook. She never regretted raising her younger siblings, but did regret the interruption in her education, and completed her G.E.D. when her own children were in college.

She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much. When her granddaughters were growing up, she would arrange a special week to spend with each and loved to teach them stitchery and baking.

Lorna was a very charismatic person, with empathy for other people. She could strike up a conversation

Jerry Lee Hagen, son of Shelby Dale and Gretchen LaMae (Argabright) Hagen, was born March 31, 1943, at Lamoni. Jerry attended Popcorn Country School through the eighth grade, then Weldon for one year and Clarke Community School in Osceola until the 10th grade. He later received his GED.

In January 1962, Jerry married Sharon Petty. To this union, three sons were born, Joe, John and Jeff.

The family lived in Weldon.

On Aug. 18, 1990, he married Sandra (Waltz) Woodard and they made their home in Van Wert.

Jerry is survived by his wife Sandra Hagen; sons, Joe (Jennifer) Hagen of Van Wert and Jeff Hagen of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter-in-law, Roz Hagen of Las Vegas, Nevada; grandchildren, Michael

Hagen (companion Cori Williamson) and Travis Hagen, all of Osceola, and Jayna Hagen of Las Vegas, Nevada; sister Sandy (Curt) Gracey of Norwalk; sister-in-law Connie Hagen of Weldon; nieces and nephews; cousins and friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Shelby in 1993 and Gretchen in 2015; son John in 1981; brother Jim in 2014 and nephew Camron Gracey in 2001.

Ronald Eugene Pollard, son of Joseph and Beulah (Woods) Pollard, was born Feb. 20, 1938, in Osceola.

Ron graduated from Clarke County High School in 1957.

On Dec. 1, 1960, he married Evelyn Overton in Os-

ceola. Ron served his country for 20 years in the U. S. Navy. After retirement, Ron and Evelyn ran an auction house, where Ron served as an auctioneer and extended family was involved. They also operated a furniture store, and he drove a school bus for several years.

Ron was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and volunteered with the Knights of Columbus.

Ron is survived by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn; children, Marcia (John)

Baughman of Chariton, Brenda (Rodney) Riley of Bloomington, Illinois, David (Kelley) Pollard of Pleasantville and Mike Pollard of Chariton; sister Beverly Dixon (Buck Gall) of Lucas; brothers, Tom Pollard of Marion and Steve (Debbie) Pollard of Russell; sister-in-law Susan Pollard of Woodburn; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; three infant siblings; brother Raymond Pollard and sister-in-law Suzanne Pollard.

Jimmy was born March 17, 1939, to Jesse and Alma (Williams) Smith in Buffalo, Missouri. He graduated from Osceola High School in Osceola and worked at Ford Motor Company in Sandusky, Ohio, retiring after 30 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching auto racing. He loved to gamble, and won a Chevy pickup at Lakeside Casino in Osceola.

Survivors include children Jesse (Kim) Smith and Rhonda (Shane Qui-

Dorothy “Dot” Elliott, 92, died Sunday, June 19, 2016, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Indianola where she had resided for the last six years.

Dot was born March 18, 1924, in Roundup, Montana.

While working at Boeing in Renton, Washington, Dot married Oland B. Elliott. In 1945, they moved to Iowa, setting up home on the Elliott family farm in Decatur County.

In 1947, son Ron was born.

On Aug. 11, 1959, Karalee married Norman LeRoy Cook in Leon. She was a homemaker.

Karalee was a member of LifePoint Assembly of God Church in Osceola.

Karalee is survived by her husband of 56 years, Norman LeRoy Cook of Osceola; daughter Cheryl K. Cook of Burleson, Texas; sons, Roger L. Cook of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and Gary L. (Anne) Cook of Norwalk; grandchildren, Mariah Cook, Zachary Cook and Nicholas Cook; sisters-inlaw, Letitia Mongar and Doris Mongar, both of Osceola; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Karalee was preceded in death by her parents; infant sister Roberta Ann Mongar and brothers, Robert Mongar and Billy Mongar. brought Dot back to Iowa in 2000. She lived in Osceola until 2010.

She was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Board of Full Harvest Housing, Area 14 Agency on Aging and many other committees.

She was a member of St. Bernard’s in Osceola and St. Brendan’s in Leon.

Dot was preceded in death by her son Ronald J. Elliott; parents, Mike and Agnes Graham; sisters, Margaret, RoseMarie, Bridget and Agnes and brothers, Mike and Charlie Graham.

Dot is survived by grandsons, John (Angie Harmer) Elliott of Des Moines and Sean and Carla Elliott (Darby Bean) of Indianola; daughter-in-law Teresa Mott of Des Moines; granddaughter Hope Phillips of Des Moines; sister Florence Faechner of Roundup, Montana, and many nephews, nieces and numerous friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 9, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Osceola. Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. in Decatur City Cemetery.

“You get to a certain age and you start to realize that your earning income is really limited based on your education,” Elizabeth said. “And, that’s what we’re trying to instill in our children. It’s not that they had to go to college; it’s that they had to have some kind of training. You have to be skilled at something. You can’t just go out into this world with no skills and expect to succeed.”

Their son Hunter will attend Liberty University in the fall. Their daughter Rachael is attending Iowa State University for a degree in special education.

“It’s like we’re starting a new legacy for our family,” Elizabeth said.

The Toby Tent shows came to Osceola in the summertime. A big tent was put up on the vacant lot on the northwest corner of the square.

“Tobias T. Tolliver” was a man who wasn’t particularly bright, but good-natured. He wore bib overalls, red wig and silly hat. He painted on huge freckles, clown mouth and peaked eyebrows to become the best rube around.

His cornball antics delighted hundreds of thousands of Mid-westerners for more than 40 years.

“Susie B. Sharp” was a gal with the same huge freckles who, with Tobias, brought live theater to small town audiences. Their act was very popular when tent shows prevailed.

The players usually performed for a week per town with a variety of comedies.

The company traveled in a caravan of trucks and carried a tent that could seat 1,100.

If needed, they could add 500 more seats.

The tent company played in opera houses in the winter. They were on the road 15 weeks each summer and later made yearly appearances at the Iowa State Fair.

The tent shows prevailed 143 years. The tent theater company lowered the curtain in 1998 at an auction that drew approximately 500 people. Auctioned off were the trucks, chairs, costumes and the big tent itself.

Iowa Department of Public Health urges Iowans to be mindful of West Nile Virus • Avoid mosquito bites by using insect repellant With Iowans expected to be spending extra time outdoors this summer, Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is reminding Iowans to take insect repellent along with them to their picnics, concerts and other celebrations and to protect against mosquito bites.

West Nile virus is transmitted through mosquitoes.

“Our surveillance has shown there are mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus currently in the state,” said IDPH Medical Director Dr. Patricia Quinlisk.

The best way to prevent the virus is to eliminate mosquito breeding areas and to use insect repellent when outdoors. Iowans should take the following steps to reduce the risk of exposure to West Nile virus:

• Use insect repellent with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always read the repellent label and consult with a health care provider if you have questions when using these types of products for children. For example, DEET should not be used on infants less than two months old and oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years old.

• Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

• Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, shoes, and socks whenever possible outdoors.

• Eliminate standing water around the home because that’s where mosquitoes lay eggs.

Empty water from buckets,

cans, pool covers and pet water dishes. Change water in bird baths every three to four days.

About 20 percent of people infected with West Nile virus will have mild to moderate symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches and vomiting.

Less than one percent of people infected become seriously ill and rarely, someone dies.

Since West Nile first appeared in Iowa in 2002, it has been found in every county in Iowa, either in humans, horses or birds. Since 2005, Iowa has had between five and 44 reported cases of West Nile virus each year.

Eddy, who grew up on a diversified farm south of Osceola, graduated from Clarke Community High School and attended Iowa State University. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1999 and his master’s degree in 2008. Currently he teaches at Southeast Polk Community Schools in Pleasant Hill.

Clarke’s baseball team split a South Central Confrence doubleheader with Davis County last Wednesday, June 29, in Osceola.

The Indians took game one 7-3.

Davis County scored two in the first to take the early lead.

Clarke answered with a run in the second.

The Indians took command for good with a sixrun fifth.

Skylar Johnson and Conner Deutsch each drove in two runs. Deutsch scored twice, while Billy Otto, Gable Reece, Zach Harmsen and Marshall Curnes each scored once.

TRURO— Wendy Stanley stepped foot onto the softball field to prepare for the 1992 season.

That season, there was a new leader for the Interstate 35 softball program.

In the 24-plus seasons since, that leader has been a steady presence for the program. He’s been a leader who’s guided the program to plenty of highs, taken it many places.

Through all of the moments from practices and meetings to games both in Truro, Fort Dodge and places in between, coach Tim Bogs has been the steadying force that’s helped guide young women on and off the field.

Bogs was honored for earning career win number 600 during Friday’s regular season home finale against East Union. His wife Mary, two daughters Amy and Kathy and four grandchildren.

Bogs earned win number 600 in a victory over Greene County at the South Hamilton Tournament on June 25.

Stanley has seen plenty of Bogs over the years. She played for him for two seasons, coached with him for a number of seasons in the early 2000s and now has watched as a mother. Oldest daughter Carlyn is a junior while younger daughter Kate is a freshman.

“Some things have changed, a lot of things haven’t,” Stanley said. “All of the pitch calls, all of the hitting calls are still the same.

His coaching style is still the same.”

Bogs has always been a stickler for sticking to the basics of softball, from good fielding to solid hitting and pitching.

“A lot of it goes back to the fundamentals,” Wendy Stanley said. “Not only does he want to win, it’s all about team development.”

Bogs’ passion for the game has showed through coaching two generations of Roadrunner players.

“He’s always been pretty easy going,” Stanley said. “It’s for the love of the game.”

Bogs’ personality makes it fun to come to the park, Carlyn Stanley said.

In game two, the Indians fell 13-2.

Davis County struck for four in the first, then added single runs in the fourth and fifth. The Mustangs blew the game open with a seven-run, sixth.

Clarke scored single runs in the fourth and sixth.

Payton Winship had two hits. Johnson and Deutsch drove in the runs. Otto and Reece scored the runs.

Reece pitched five innings and took the pitching loss.

Indians softball splits pair

The Indians fell 1-0 to Davis County. They countered that with a 7-4 win at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

Murray baseball falls short in wild game

“He’s so good,” she said.

“He works with us as hard as we do on and off the field.”

Bogs’ work shows in the teams he has put on the field over the years.

“He has such a big impact,” Carlyn Stanley said.

“He’ll take all of his time working with us, perfecting us.

“He’s a big part of this team.”

Bogs’ ability to communicate with players has helped him last two-plus decades.

“He’s always been a mentor to the kids,” said Shana Richardson, who played on Bogs’ first team in 1992.

Each season, Bogs comes back with a passion for that year’s team.

“For me, it’s seeing the joy he was with each new class,” said Richardson, whose daughter Slye is an

infielder on this year’s team.

“We have good athletes, but it’s what he does with them, where he takes them year after year.”

Bogs’ motto hasn’t changed over the years.

“We expect to win,” he said. “That’s the philosophy we’re going to try and install. We’re going to win.

It doesn’t matter who we’re going to play. We’re going to win. It’s been pretty successful.”

A win early in his second season showed the Roadrunners could be a program to be reckoned with.

“Mary asked me the other day which was your favorite.

One was the time we beat Mount Ayr at the Murray Tournament,” Bogs said.

“They’d beaten us three times in a row. To finally get them the first time, the year

we went to state, showed we could play with people, showed we could be a good team.”

Another special win was last season’s regional final when the Roadrunners earned their first trip to state in 10 seasons.

The win allowed Carlyn and Kate Stanley an opportunity to play at state — accomplishing a feat their mother accomplished her senior year.

“When we got to state, the TV crew asked how come it was so special, it’s because these girls now have moms that played for me,” Bogs said. “It was fun coaching their daughters at state.”

It was one of 600 wins, and hopefully many more.

“We’re looking forward to postseason see what happens,” Wendy Stanley said.

MURRAY—Murray and Orient-Macksburg’s Bluegrass Conference baseball game was cruising right along as one of the better baseball games this season.

Then the ninth inning came around.

Orient-Macksburg took advantage of a depleted Murray pitching staff to pull out a 20-7, nine-inning win at Murray.

The host Mustangs had battled back from a 6-2 deficit with a run in the seventh, tying the score at 7-7 and forcing it into extra innings.

Each team played a scoreless eighth inning.

And that’s when the game became even more interesting.

Because of a Bluegrass Conference doubleheader scheduled for the next night at Twin Cedars, Murray was forced to go much farther into its pitching staff than had been planned.

The lack of pitching depth by Murray became readily apparent as three Mustang pitchers struggled to put the ball over the plate. The pitching struggles — four walks and three hit batsmen — combined with seven hits and two errors, led to the Bulldogs plating 13 runs.

“You had a little bit of everything,” said Orient-Macksburg coach Drew Dornack. “It was like the Iowa weather.”

In the inning, Orient-Macksburg sent 20 batters to the plate before Murray could end it.

The half inning took approximately 40 minutes to complete.

It was a scenario Murray coach Travis Held had been a part of before and one he may never see again.

“I’ve never been involved an inning like that, never had something like that,” Held said.

Orient-Macksburg features a lineup that can be tough to get out at times.

Good plate discipline also played a role in the decisive ninth inning.

“There’s certain parts of our lineup that are tough,” Dornack said. “As far as having the wheels fall off of an inning quite like that — it wasn’t anything we did with the bats.”

Orient-Macksburg jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two.

The Bulldogs pushed one across in the first. The Mustangs answered with a Kenny Boles home run over the right-center field fence.

Orient-Macksburg responded. The Bulldogs tacked on three more in the second and added a run in the third and fourth.

Murray pushed one across in the third, then tallied two in the fifth, cutting the lead to 6-4.

The Mustangs tied it with two in the fifth. Seth Shannon and Kegan Johnson each had run-scoring hits to tie it up.

Orient-Macksburg pushed the go-ahead run across in the sixth. Dylan Nichols reached on an error, stole second and third, then scored on Kenton Eslinger’s sacrifice fly.

Murray went down quietly in the sixth.

The Bulldogs had an opportunity for more in the seventh, putting a runner at third with no outs, but a runner was picked off to stymie the threat.

The Mustangs took advantage of an opportunity in the bottom of the inning. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt at first base allowed Shannon to score the tying run with one out.

But Orient-Macksburg pitcher Jesse Johnson atoned for his earlier mistake by recording a strikeout and a popout to end the inning and force extra innings.

“Jesse Johnson got out of a couple jams,” Dornack said.

“Those were nice to see.”

Orient-Macksburg had a threat going in the eighth, putting runners at second third with no out. But two runners were picked off at third base on the same play — the initial runner was tagged out trying to steal the base. Then the next out was recorded when the trailing runner was caught trying to go from second to third in the confusion after the first out was recorded.

Murray had runners at first and second with two out in the bottom of the eighth, but could not score.

Then came the wild top of the ninth.

The Mustangs showed they can battle back from several situations.

“It was a good game,” Held said. “They did pretty good.”

Orient-Macksburg improved to 8-12 and 5-4 in the Bluegrass. The Bulldogs are off until Tuesday when they are at Guthrie Center in a non-conference contest.

Murray fell to 8-10 and 4-3 in the Bluegrass.

Young coach, young players crucial part of Murray success

MURRAY—“It takes one.”

A simple approach that applies to plenty of situations in softball.

That is what junior catcher Brandi Gilbert claims is one of her favorite short pieces of advice that Murray Lady Mustangs assistant coach Tessa Otto offers.

For the fourth consecutive season Murray softball finds itself having accumulated at least 20 wins. The varsity program has done this with two coaches having been on the job for years now.

Success is never a matter of just talent or coaching alone, though Murray certainly has both. Perhaps most impressively, the Lady Mustangs are enjoying success this year with a large cast of freshman talent, who are draw much of their competitiveness and camaraderie from Otto.

The fifth-year head coach has split her time as the junior high head coach and as an assistant with the junior varsity and varsity. Otto is a Murray graduate and former Southwestern Community College athlete herself and has been connected to Murray softball for much of her life.

Almost immediately after finishing softball her senior year of high school, she picked up a coaches’ license.

Since starting college ball at SWCC and Graceland University (two years and one year respectively) she has coached the entire time, five years in all.

Otto has picked up knowledge and skills along the way

under the tutelage of her high school coach, Danny Jensen.

Jensen is the well-respected legend from the area who has served as the head softball coach at Murray for the last 36 years, principal at the high school for 14 and a number of different coaching jobs for the school district.

While many observers might be quick to credit Jensen with Murray’s success, he is just as quick to defer to his girls and coach Otto.

“She has a lot of great ideas about hitting, in particular she’s really good with hitting techniques,” Jensen said. “She relates well to the girls and she knows our program. She knows what to expect and she knows how to win.”

The first junior high class that Otto worked with through junior high is the current junior class. Gilbert glows in her praise of her coach.

“She’s just a really good coach for me. She doesn’t like yell a lot, she likes to teach and she helped with my batting a lot.” Gilbert said. “I was an okay batter, I had a lot of power but I didn’t know how to use it at that time. She helped me to…swing better.”

Gilbert, who’s bat is certainly of great importance to the Mustangs, plays a vital role as a catcher on the opposite end of the team’s two star freshmen pitchers. Kayla Wookey has a 1.04 earned run average, 12 wins, and has struck out 157 batters in 87 and one-third innings. Breianna Klein leads the Lady Mustangs in batting average (.500), home runs (5), RBIs

(41), and doubles (19). The two have combined to pitch all of Murray’s games over the last two years.

Both claim to have learned a great deal from Otto.

“I believe the reason I’m so competitive is because of coach,” Klein said.

“That first year it was so much fun playing for her. She’s just an awesome coach,” Wookey said. “She called my pitches and she has helped me through my pitching as I got older and got up to high school.”

As much as the softball team is willing to talk about their love for coach Otto, she is quick to acknowledge the greatness in the athletes she coaches.

“The talent level is very high for these guys. It’s incredible what they’re doing as freshmen really,” Otto said. “I’ve tried to get them better since they were seventh graders, some of them played with me as sixth graders so, I’ve had them for three years in junior high which helped a lot too.”

As junior high coach, Otto has had the chance to help groom the young Lady Mustangs. Otto expects a lot, as she knows the standard of excellence that Murray demands of its program. The junior high squad typically will play around 30 games in the summer and will practice nearly every day.

Otto claims that the transition from competing at a collegiate level was a hard part of coming to coach junior

high, but it has proved fruitful for her and the program as a whole.

“My biggest thing was coming from playing college softball my first year to coaching junior high kids.

That was my biggest struggle was going from this level of competition here (holds hand up at head level and then brings it down), but I think that was good for them because I did hold them to a higher standard even though they were junior high kids,” Otto said.

Jensen appreciates just how much Otto drives home the fundamentals in that environment, a key part of why there isn’t much of an adjustment period for girls making their way to the varsity program.

This bond formed by being their junior high coach extends to the varsity level, where she can be more personable during in-game situations than Jensen.

“In tight games, coach (Otto) comes out there and she tells you what you need to do. Jensen gets caught up a lot in the game and doesn’t really talk to us every inning,” Wookey said.

“But coach (Otto) is always there to talk to us and she’s here when we bat, and she’s telling us what we need to do and how we need to do it.”

Outfielder Hailey Chew is another freshman who has quickly stepped into an important role at the top of the lineup after not playing much her eighth grade year.

“Coach Otto helped me really to enjoy softball more.

When I first started in my junior high years, I was still a little unsure about being at an upper level and playing and she helped me through being nervous and taught me how to slap,” Chew said.

Whether its personal or “professional,” Otto provides a positive environment for her girls, which contributes to their success.

“She just always makes it fun. Other coaches will yell and make you feel bad but coach just kind of lifts you up. And you’ll know when she’s having a good or a bad day. And you know which day to mess with her, so you gotta watch that,” freshman Kendra Boles said.

Talk to anyone on the Lady Mustangs squad and they have something to say about how they’ve been helped by coach Otto. Gilbert may have summed it up best when she described what type of program coach Otto helps facilitate in Murray.

“We’re more of a family this year than I’ve ever experienced before in any sport,” Gilbert said. “I trust these girls much more than I ever trusted myself at that age.

They are really exceptional for younger freshman and eight graders and whoever we have in the game. They’re always ready to play. They’re easy to depend on.”

Just as dependable as Tessa Otto is.

‌T RURO—Interstate 35’s baseball team saw what happened when it put the ball in play during Friday’s Pride of Iowa Conference baseball game.

The Roadrunners took advantage of a number of East Union mistakes in earning a 16-1, four-inning win.

Interstate 35 scored six in the first, three in the third and seven in the fourth.

“We came out and put the ball in play,” said Interestate 35 coach Jeff Douglas.

The Roadrunneres overcame an early deficit. East Union’s lone run came in the top of the first.

“That’s not always easy to chase,” Douglas said.

The Roadrunners will now start preparing for Saturday’s Class 2A District 12 postseason opener against Clarke. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. in Earlham.

“They’re capable of beating anyone,” Douglas said. “They’ll put the ball in play. If you don’t field it, they’ll beat you. You have to field the ball, take advantage of opportunities.”

A few days ago, we celebrated Independence Day. We celebrated the freedom from Great Britain that was secured by soldiers and attested to by 56 individuals who were willing to commit treason and sign their names to the Declaration of Independence. And while your opinion may differ from mine, even with all her faults, America is still the greatest place on Earth to live!

America is great, not because of the immense beauty within her borders, or because of the prosperity and abundance we enjoy. The greatness of America is in the freedom we enjoy that was provided by the men and women who fought so that we could have it.

The men who signed the Declaration of Independence had far more to lose than they ever stood to gain. These men, along with many soldiers through the years, paid the price for what we enjoy today. This is what makes America great. Great people who have made a great sacrifice.

But, and you knew there was a “But” coming, didn’t you? But, there’s a problem in America. The problem isn’t a political party or even the government itself. The problem is me. It’s me and millions of others who have become complacent and indifferent in our responsibilities in this nation. And whether you like it or not, the problem is some of you. Perhaps Edmund Burke said it best when he said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

The good news is, it’s not too late to do something about it. In the Old Testament book of 2 Chronicles, Solomon had just finished building the temple where the people would go to worship God. He and the people were ecstatic, to say the least, so they offered enormous sacrifices and celebrated God’s blessings in a seven day celebration. The night following this celebration, God shows up and speaks to Solomon and tells him exactly what was needed to restore Israel in times of trouble. In-

“If” we will seek God. “If” we will turn away from wickedness.

I know people who say that America is, “too far gone,” but I don’t buy that for a second. Like Israel, we have enjoyed God’s blessings during our more than 200 years of existence. Perhaps the reason relates, in part, to our original pattern and purpose for government having been based on biblical standards. However, it is clear that we have drifted from our former commitment to be “one nation under God.” So if God paid us a night visit, what counsel would He offer? It would, no doubt, be similar to the survival instructions He gave Solomon: humble ourselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from wickedness. There is healing in that simple message. Healing for individuals, for families, for businesses and for nations. But the job can’t be done by committee. It won’t be accomplished in the paneled rooms on Capitol Hill, in judges’ chambers, voting booths, city council meetings, or even church gatherings. It must be done individually, by “My people who are called by My name.” I’m in. And you?

Clarke County Board of Supervisors June 20, 2016 The Board met in regular session, at the Courthouse with the following members present: Marvin McCann, Bill Black and Larry Keller. Also present, Auditor Janice White. Chairman McCann called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Keller made a motion to approve the agenda, seconded

by Black. All Ayes.

County Engineer Tom Andersen arrived at 9:10 a.m.

Moved by Keller, seconded by Black to set August 8, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. to hold a public hearing to close a portion of 205th Ave in Sec. 26, Washington Twp. All Ayes.

Moved by Black, seconded by Keller, to approve Contract, Contractor's Bond and Certificate of Ins. for Pavement Patching Project FM-C020(106) 55-20. All Ayes.

Moved by Black, seconded by Keller, to approve submission of Pillars Grant applications by the Co. Engineer to help fund the South St. Bridge Project and 110th Ave. Bridge Replacement Project. All Ayes.

Mr. Andersen left at 9:20 a.m.

The Supplements to 28E Agreements between Cities of Osceola, Woodburn, Murray, Clarke Co. Reservoir Comm. and Clarke Co. will be considered at a future meeting.

Moved by Keller, seconded by Black, to approve appropriation of funds, in Service Area 1, from Attorney Dept. to District Court Dept. in the amount of $1094.22.

The storm water discharge will be from construction activities located in the SE Âź of Section 18 and NE Âź of Section 19, Township 72N, Range 25W in Clarke County. Storm water will be discharged from 2 point sources and will be discharged to unnamed ditch to Grade Lake to White Breast Creek.

New Casey’s:

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is held at the new Casey’s General Store Friday, July 1, in Osceola. The location of the new store is at the intersection of highways 34 and 69, also known as the “four corners.” The store has all the amenities of Casey’s newest store design, which includes made-to-order sub sandwiches, made-from-scratch pizza and doughnuts, a walk-in beer cave and large coffee and fountain area. The Casey’s General Store on Highway 34 near Hy-Vee and Great Western Bank is now closed because of the new store.

Veterans town hall: Congressman Dave Loebsack, D-Iowa, speaks to Clarke County

veterans during a town hall meeting Friday, July 1, at Clarke County Development Corporation.

Loebsack was hosting a series of veterans town halls across Iowa’s Second District on his “Serving Those Who Served” tour. These forums give veterans and their families an opportunity to speak directly with Loebsack. Topics discussed at the town hall included mental health care and local VA hospitals. Loebsack was also scheduled to make stops in Davenport, Clinton, Muscatine, Burlington, Keokuk, Leon, Chariton, Knoxville and Newton. This was the fifth year Loebsack has hosted town halls specifically for veterans around the Fourth of July holiday.

Four farmer candidates from the southern Iowa area are running for the District 8 seat on the Iowa Soybean Association Board.

Association members will cast via mail during the month of July and board members will be announced mid-August.
