Chamber to host first-ever Open Store Front event

Are you looking to start a business but don’t know about what kind of properties are out there? Osceola Chamber/Main Street (OCMS) has an event for you.

The first-ever Open Store Front event is planned 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 2, on the square.

“It’s an idea that we got to try to help showcase some of the open spaces downtown,” s a i d D e r e k Lumsden Lumsden, OCMS executive director.

“We get a lot of calls from potential business people who say, ‘I’d like to start a business. Do you know a place we could look?’”

He added, a lot of times the chamber can provide names, addresses and phone numbers, but they either can’t connect to the property owner or that property owner doesn’t live in Osceola.

Open Store Front A solution to the problem was working directly with the building owners to try to get those spaces open, and then touring prospective store owners through them.

“So, they could see the potential of the space. Maybe this space is too small or this space is just right,” Lumsden said. “If we could change a couple of things and hopefully get them in touch with the property owner … or representative, and then that way, they have someone to talk to about what they can do.”

Williams was arraigned and released after posting bond.

According to a Clarke County Sheriff’s report, the date of the offense spans from Oct. 1 to May 16.

Be safe and be buckled DES MOINES — For many, buckling up in a vehicle is second nature. However, in 2014, 9,385 people nationwide lost their lives as a result of not buckling their seat belt; and in Iowa in 2014, 118 of the 322 crash fatalities were not buckled up.

In our rural state, it is important to note that nationally 61 percent of pickup truck fatalities were not buckled.

Iowa’s seat belt compliance rate is at 93 percent, one of the best in the nation but, still, too many of the state’s traffic fatalities are unbelted.

Those are lives that could have been saved. The consequences of not buckling up are too high, don’t become a negative seat belt statistic, always buckle up.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) statistics show passenger vehicle occupants are buckling up more during the day but not enough at night.

It or Ticket mobilization focuses on seat belt violators 24/7, but a strong enforcement effort will be made between the nighttime hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., because of the significant number of violators and fatal crashes during that time.

“Law enforcement plays an important role in helping protect the safety of our citizens,” said Pat Hoye, chief of the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. “Time after time, we see the deadly results that come from drivers and passengers not wearing their seat belt. Wearing a seat belt is one of the most important steps in increasing survivability in a crash.”

As you travel near or far this Memorial Day, remember to buckle up in the back seat as well as in the front.

Rear seat passengers are three times more likely to die in a crash if they are unbuckled. In real life we don’t get a second chance.

WIC begins new initiative MATURA Action Corporation’s Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program will begin a new initiative this week as they convert participant paper checks to electronic benefit cards in all the counties served by MATURA. The rollout of the new cards begins Tuesday, May 24, and will continue through mid-August. The conversion is a statewide initiative that began last November and will continue until all the agencies have transitioned to the new system.

“The rollout that begins for us this week actually consists of two major changes in the WIC world,” said Karla Hynes, MATURA’s WIC/ MCH director. “First the introduction of the electronic benefits card or eWIC and second an entirely new computer operating system.”

Hynes said the entire WIC staff attended a weeklong training in Atlantic to prepare for the new systems.

“The biggest difference our participants will experience is the new cards. Many advantages are associated with the cards including

Donald Lee McGahuey, 87, of Leon died Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

F u n e r a l McGahuey services were held 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 15, at Slade-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 103 NE Mill St., in Leon with the Rev. Brad Carr officiating.

Burial was in Decatur Cemetery in Decatur. A memorial fund has been established by the family.

Donald Lee McGahuey, son of Edward Lee Oliver and Goldie H. (Piercy) McGahuey, was born July 6, 1928, on a farm north of Lamoni. Don started kindergarten in Decatur and graduated from Osceola High School in Osceola with the class of 1946.

On May 24, 1949, he married Muriel Ruth Pett in Chariton at the R.L.D.S. Church. They started their marriage living on a farm south of Osceola where Don farmed and Ruth taught rural school. In November 1957, they bought the John Deere dealership in Leon. In the beginning, the store was on the east side of the Leon square along with three other businesses, then as buildings became available, it expanded. In 1975, it had outgrown that location, so land was purchased on the east side of town. The business is still in the same location today where he owned and operated it until 2009.

He did not like doing the paperwork, so Ruth quit teaching and started helping in 1960. Over the years, their children and grandson, Sean Saxton, all joined the business.

Barbara Ann Buck, daughter of James Marcus Buck and Wanda Mae (Davis) Buck, was born July 3, 1950, in Ames. Ann graduated from Ames High School in 1969. She attended West Mar College in Le Mars for a couple of years, taking classes in elementary education.

She then went on to Boone Junior College in Boone for LPN training. Following that, she attended DMACC in Ankeny receiving a clerical degree.

Ann is survived by her brother Jim (Marilyn) of Colorado; twin sister Beverly of Colorado; Alva and Alma Yoder and families; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, aunts and uncles.

(Gracey) Hagen, was born Sept. 30, 1929, in Warren County. Betty received her education in New Virginia and Truro schools.

On March 15, 1947, she married Richard Dean Wickett at Hiawatha, Kansas.

Betty lived most of her life in the New Virginia area. She operated her own in-home daycare for 18 years, as well as working outside the home at Boles Machine Shop.

Betty’s first job as a young woman was as a telephone operator in the downtown telephone office in New Virginia. She cooked for New Virginia Lions Club for 10 to 15 years and worked as a school cook for Interstate 35 and also Clarke Community schools for more than 20 years, retiring in 1991.

Betty was a member of American Legion Auxiliary in New Virginia, Red Hat Society and United Methodist Women for more than 40 years.

Public safety The mayor and other council members agreed about making this issue safe and legal.

Councilman Dr. George Fotiadis discussed finding what roads should be permitted for golf carts for safety issues, especially concerning speed limits and certain city intersections.

The council authorized having further research done by city officials and law enforcement on the potential creation of a golf cart ordinance and what streets the vehicles should be permitted on.

“I guess I would be willing to look at it with a couple of things — the lighting and visibility features and then maybe the restricted streets, which would probably be pretty obvious, basically the ones I can think of

• In other Osceola City Council news, the city council approved the first reading of an amendment to the animal at-large ordinance.

The animal-at-large ordinance currently states it is unlawful for any owner to allow an animal to run at large within the corporate limits of the city.

The new amendment states “admitted violations imposed by this code of ordinances may be charged upon a simple notice of a fine payable at the office of the police department.

The simple notice of a fine shall be in the amount of $50 for all first violations, $100 for all second violations and $150 for all subsequent violations thereafter.”

The idea behind the amendment is to curb repeat offenders who allow their pets to run at large.

The city council clarified, while discussions may have been geared toward dogs on the loose, the ordinance encompasses all animals, including cats.

BACK IN TIME Henry Stivers

Henry Stivers was born in Middleport, Ohio and came to Osceola in 1865 entering as a law student in the office of H.L. Karr. He was admitted to the bar on his 21st birthday and practiced law for the ensuring 10 years.

In 1873, he married Lucy Goetchius of Ward Township.

A Clarke County pioneer businessman and lifetime friend of its people, Stivers assumed duties as vice president and superintendent of the Des Moines, Osceola and Southern Railroad, also serving as president of the Clarke County Bank.

Purchasing the Osceola Sentinel in 1885, he was for a number of years its owner and managing editor. He later established the Des Moines Leader newspaper and served with honor and distinction as mayor of Osceola and Clarke County attorney.

He was prominently associat-

ed with the business, social and lodge interests of Osceola.

The Stivers built the beautiful three-story house at 409 S. Main St. and lived in it until a few years before his death in 1917.

Blueprints of the house discovered in the attic showed the house was designed and built around 1895 for the Stivers.

Ownership of the house passed into the hands of the Killmar family in the mid-1920s and remained in this family until the late 1970s when it was purchased by Jeff Wade.

In describing the house, Wade stated it had a solid marble fireplace and French doors.

The house did not sag and had more wood in it than houses today. The walls were built using two-by-six inch boards instead of two-by-four inch boards. The house had 3,500 square feet on the first two floors, plus a third floor attic.

of Osceola, utility, phone and cable companies assisted in moving wires to allow the house to pass.

The 38-feet tall, 92-ton house was moved more than 47 miles to its destination in Warren County starting at 6 a.m. May 30, 1996.

One of the photos showed the house being turned east on Highway 34 — the house having “looked” the other way for 101 years.

Another photo shows the house a half block east on Highway 34 where two boards with a groove in the middle of each field were placed on the highway.

The main north-south electric power line had not been disconnected disrupting service.

The power line was carefully dropped down in the grooves on the boards, making a loud noise.

The house was then driven over the boards. Electric crews immediately put the power line back in place after the house moved past the boards.

Local students recognized by Branstad for academic excellence WEST DES MOINES — Alexa DeVore, a student at Clarke, and Garrison Antoine, a student at Murray, were recognized by Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds for outstanding academic achievement at the 14th annual Governor’s Scholar Recognition Ceremony May 1 at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.

The statewide program, sponsored by Iowa Governor’s Office, Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and its title sponsor Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF), honored 432 high school seniors from across Iowa.

“Iowa Farm Bureau members believe that by investing in our youth and communities, we’re investing in the future of Iowa,” said IFBF President Craig Hill. “We are so proud to honor such exception students and proud to be a leading contributor to educational programs and annual scholarships for our youth.”

Each high school was invited to select their senior student or students

with the highest academic ranking, based on grade point average for their first seven semesters. Students selected for the award also had the opportunity to recognize their favorite/most influential teacher and will receive a photo plaque of their meeting with Gov. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Reynolds.

“The principles learned through academic success, like those learned from participation in education-based activities, help develop outstanding leaders and citizens,” said IHSSA Executive Director Alan Beste. “The partnership between IHSSA and the Iowa Farm Bureau, along with great cooperation of the Governor’s Office has made this prestigious event possible for many years.”

Ninety-nine percent of those recognized also participate in extracurricular school activities, with more than 80 percent participating in at least one interscholastic sport. More than 60 percent of the group plan to continue their ewducation in Iowa.

Clarke seniors visit Iowa secretary of state’s office DES MOINES— Seniors from Clarke Community High School recently toured the historic office of Secretary of State Paul Pate at the Iowa State Capitol.

They were provided an informational tour of the office, which included examining the original

handwritten Iowa Constitution and learning about the rich architectural history of the Iowa Secretary of State’s Capitol Office.

“Iowa has one of the most impressive state capitols in the country,” said Secretary Pate. “It is a historical treasure all Iowans

should visit.”

Brimm said he had been throwing better in practice on May 18, and so he was disappointed with his final throw of prelims.

“I was standing over with my mom and my family and my coach. My coach had a spreadsheet. By the way he had it, I wasn’t in finals,” Brimm said. “I was in ninth.

But when they announced that my throw was the cutoff throw, I was really shocked.

I didn’t know what to think.”

The Clarke senior launched a throw of 51-2.75 on his first attempt in finals, improving his mark. That mark held up as his best of the day, as he ended in eighth place.

“It felt a lot better,” Brimm said about the throw.

“But still, I think there was more in there. My release was a little bit off. I could have followed through a lot Contributed photo better.”

So when Brimm made finals and finished in eighth place, he was surprised.

Kyle Eckermann said. “He worked hard all year and to earn a medal at the state meet is no small accomplishment.”

Brimm said it had been a dream of his to win a state meet medal.

“For sure. Last year I was going into it (state) and didn’t really know what to think, because it was my first time throwing shot up there,” Brimm said. “This year I thought I could do it and worked out in the end.”

Brimm will attend Northwest Missouri State University in the fall, studying disaster relief and management.

Fellow Clarke senior Rich Wilkins finished 22nd in the Class 2A 800 meters, running 2;04.02 and 22nd in the 2A 1,600 meters with his time of 4:44.68.

“Rich Wilkins ran well in both the 800 meters and the 1,600 meters,” Eckermann said. “His times of 2:04 and 4:44 were close to being his personal best. Unfortunate-

ly, he ran against a strong 2A field this year at state, so he placed not as high as I had hoped.”

CD’s Boothe, Atwood; boys shuttle hurdle medal

DES MOINES — Central Decatur won state meet medals in two events here last weekend at the 2016 Coed State Track Meet.

Junior Raegan Boothe finished fifth in the Class 1A girls high jump competition, one spot in front of former Murray prep Alyssa Staudt, who now competes for Rockford. Central Decatur freshman Emma Atwood finished tied for seventh.

Boothe, Staudt and Atwood all cleared 5-1 and went out with three misses at 5-3. In total, five jumpers cleared 5-1 and bowed out of the competition at 5-3.

Boothe had the fewest misses leading up to 5-3 and took the top spot out of that

group, placing fifth. Atwood tied with North Linn’s Mandy Rawson.

With the high jump competition running simultaneously as the Class 1A girls 400 meter hurdles, Atwood

the Clarke shuttle hurdle finished 17th in the Class 2A prelims. The Lady Indians ran 1:10.31.

Team members were Solanna Zimmerman, Chynna Beydler, Ashlynn Oehlert and Bailey Zimmerman.

“I thought the girls ran pretty well. It wasn’t their best time, but we had two out of the four who had never run at the state meet before. So I’m sure nerves were probably a factor there,” Clarke head girls track coach Christa Subbert said. “They gave it all they had and ran well.”

Solanna Zimmerman placed 19th in the 2A girls 100 meter hurdle prelims on Friday, running 16.97.

Bailey Zimmerman ran into more bad luck during prelims of the event. After getting out to a fast start, Zimmerman fell over the fourth hurdle and crashed to the track. She ended up 23rd overall in 19.52 seconds.

Cauy Spidle, Tyler Davis, Carter Boothe and Peyton Pedersen ran a big season’s best of 1:00.94 in the May 19 prelims, qualifying in the fifth position to Saturday’s finals.

In finals, the Cardinals ran 1:00.75 to finish sixth in the eight-team finals field.

But, both Wapsie Valley and Northwood-Kensett were disqualified, vaulting Central Decatur to fourth place.

“We ran pretty well. The preliminaries, we ran our

best time by over 2 seconds, and we improved on that time (in finals),” Pedersen said. “We’re pretty happy with it. We wish we could have gone under the 1-minute mark, but we’ve improved a lot this year.”

Central Decatur’s time of 1:00.75 in finals broke the school record in the event.

The team included two sophomores in Boothe and Davis and a freshman in Spidle. Pedersen is a senior.

All four members of the relay team improved their splits in Saturday’s finals.

“I was running about low

15s, so I improved a little bit,” Pedersen said. “The rest of our guys improved dramatically. Carter Boothe was running mid-16s and ran a 14.9 today. So we’re a group of guys that have improved a lot.”

Pedersen also competed in Friday afternoon’s Class 1A boys 110 high hurdles prelims, where he finished 13th with his time of 15.96.

The final qualifying time for finals was 15.79.

Interstate 35 junior Dominic Cresta finished 15th in the Class 2A boys 3,200 meters on May 19, running a PR time of 10:22.17.

“She was right up there until about the fourth hurdle,” Subbert said. “It didn’t even

look like she fell over the hurdle. It might have been in between, but she got up and finished. It’s a bummer. They’re both juniors, so they’ll be back again next year, too.”

Humeston student wins $2,000 AKSARBEN AG Leaders Scholarship OMAHA, Neb. — The AKSARBEN Foundation announced 50 students from a seven-state region as the 2016 recipients of an AKSARBEN AG Leaders Scholarship. Together the students will receive $100,000 in recognition of their contributions to the agricultural tradition of the Heartland.

“The AG Leaders Scholarship program is designed to provide scholarships annually to youth who have participated in our stock show but never had the opportunity to participate in the Purple Ribbon Auction,” said Kevin Kock,

executive director of AKSARBEN Agriculture Initiatives. “These students are leaders and by supporting their passion we hope to keep as many of them as possible leading our rural communities.”

Nearly 1,200 4-H Exhibitors from a 10-state region take part in the AKSARBEN 4-H Stock Show each year. Each AG Leaders Scholarship winner is a high school senior and 4-H Exhibitor who has participated in the stock show for three or more years.

Before Marvel Comic’s Iron Man was such a hit on the big screen there was another Iron Man. His name is Cal Ripken Jr. Ripken played 21 seasons for the Baltimore Orioles (1981–2001) where he amassed 3,184 hits, 431 home runs, and 1,695 runs batted in during his career. He earned two Gold Glove Awards, was a 19-time All-Star and was twice named American League MVP. I’ll tell you how he did it — but first, let me tell you how he didn’t do it. He didn’t rely on a hot streak. Sure, a lot of sports records are set when a player gets on a hot streak.

When she or he has a good game or a good month or even a good season, records tend to fall. But hot streaks come and go. Ripken didn’t depend on hot streaks, neither did he rely on short cuts.

He had a special room built at his home where he would practice throw after throw at a piece of tape on the wall that represented the first baseman’s glove. Every day in the off season, Ripken would work out, throw, work out, throw, work out, throw ...

Something many people don’t know about Ripken is that during his first year as a pro, while playing minor league ball in West Virginia, he made his mark in a different way: he committed a league-leading 33 errors at short-stop. Not a good start. And since his dad was already well-known in baseball, many analysts said he was just an over-rated kid,

not good enough for life in the big leagues. But, he didn’t quit.

So what was his secret? Cal Ripken Jr., the Iron Man, just kept taking one step at a time in the right direction. He didn’t rocket to stardom — it was a journey of one right step after another. Ripken kept taking one more step in the right direction, one game at a time.

Later in his career, he went 95 consecutive games without making an error, and committed only three in an entire season — another record he holds. Ripken’s habit of taking one more step led him through his own “worst to first” journey.

It’s a journey you can take, too. God wants to pour out his grace in your life. He wants to change you through and through. Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples and the “bold, brash” and sometimes, “arrogant” one, wrote this: So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor.
