Teacher spotlight Averweg shares her appreciation of teaching music By AMY HANSEN

Editor’s note: This is a continuation of the “Teacher Spotlight” series. Music is a balm for the soul, and for Christie Averweg, Clarke Community Middle School band director, her personal mission is to promote it. “I strive to instill an appreciation of music in all of my students,” Averweg said. “I love teaching band because the study of music promotes teamwork, discipline and patience.” The seventh and eighth grade bands are under Averweg’s direction, as well as the middle school jazz band. In addition to teaching middle school students, Averweg works with the high school color guard and serves as a ninth grade advisor. Starting out Averweg’s foray into teaching music has taken her all over south central Iowa. She attended Simpson College in Indianola, and for the first half of her student
Clarke band students have several performances throughout the year. All band members will perform at the 7-12 winter band concert Jan. 12, as well as the 7-12 spring band concert April 23. Both concerts start at 7 p.m. There is also a 7-12 jazz concert 7 p.m. Feb. 5.

During this time, David Twombley, who was the middle school band director at Clarke, allowed Averweg to rehearse his band. In 1997, Averweg earned a Bachelor of Music degree in music education. For the first three years of her professional music career, she

Things are taking shape with the façades on the businesses on the town square in Osceola. Construction is currently underway on 14 buildings around the square through a downtown revitalization grant under the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program housed in Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) from federal Housing and Urban Development (HUD) SINGLE COPY PRICE: 75¢

funds. The CDBG project has been progressing for awhile now. It began in August 2013 when Osceola City Council approved the grant for the project. Construction started June 25. What to look for The project allows building owners to fix up the front, or façade, of their buildings.
