The storm caused the damage between 3 and 3:30 a.m. Sunday, May 17. Most of the damage is in the rural parts of the county, west of Osceola.

According to BNSF officials, there were no reported injuries and no major financial losses in the accident.

However, because of the mud the storm created, clean up is going to take many hours.

At approximately 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 17, BNSF officials said a track would be openfor train traffic.

Inside the town limits, there was reported damage to trees and aluminum car ports.

‘Click It or Ticket’ this Memorial Day weekend DES MOINES — Recent crash data shows motorists are buckling up more during the day than at night.

The Click It or Ticket campaign across Iowa and the United States is focusing on heightened seat belt enforcement 24-7, and a more defined focus of seat belt enforcement will take place between the evening/overnight hours of 6 p.m. and 5:59 a.m., because of the significant number of violators and fatal crashes during this time period.

Over the last 10 years, Iowa has averaged 5.3 traffic fatalities during the threeday Memorial Day holiday weekend.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly half of the 21,132

motorists who were killed on our nation’s roadways in 2013 were not wearing seat belts — that number jumped to 67 percent for males aged 13 – 15.

Buckling up in the back seat is just as important. Half of all those riding in the front seat that were killed in crashes in 2012 were unrestrained, and 61 percent of those killed in back seats were unrestrained. Every fatality is more than just a statistic; it is a life, a family member or friend.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) want people to remember the single most effective way to reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes is to wear a seat belt every day, every trip.

Osceola’s Memorial Day ceremony is 11 a.m. Monday, May 25, at the Civil War memorial at Maple Hill Cemetery. The memorial is located on the east side of the highway and south of the maintenance buildings.

The American Legion will be commemorating 150 years since the end of the Civil War. It is recommended for people to bring their own lawn chairs if they plan to attend.

Local artists featured at Des Moines Art Center The public is invited to see “Ceramic Exhibition-2015” at the Des Moines Art Center, featuring ceramic sculpture, hand-built, wheel-thrown and raku art work by students including Deb Jurshak of Murray, and Mary Ellen Kimball of Osceola, who are studying with professional artists Nancy Briggs, Linda Lewis and Jim Hubbartt.

CCH’s CarFit to offer educational driving program to older drivers Clarke County Hospital is sponsoring a free safety inspection by CarFit experts 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 3 at Osceola United Methodist Church.

The program is designed to ensure older drivers “fit” their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety. Each inspection takes 20 minutes and is performed by trained technicians and health professionals.

Any licensed driver over the age of 65 is considered an older driver, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

While 77 percent of these drivers, compared to 63 percent of drivers age 18-64, were wearing a seat belt at the time of a crash, the older driver population is much more prone to serious injury.

“The Carfit event is a great way to help older adults make sure that their vehicles are adjusted properly for safety and comfort,” said

Randy Hullinger Osceola

Randy Hullinger, 65, of Osceola died May 7, 2015, after a lengthy illness.

Randall (Randy) Mark Hullinger, son of Mary Lenola (Riddle) and Loral Lester Hullinger, was born Aug. 5, 1949, in Leon.

After graduation from Leon High School, Randy attended Culver Stockton College, Canton, Mo., graduating in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology.

After their graduation, Randy married Debbie Price (deceased).

Reynolds to continue ‘Stories of Women’s Lives’ tour DES MOINES – Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds announced she will continue her “Stories of Women’s Lives” tour through the rest of 2015.

Reynolds posted a video to her YouTube account expanding upon this announcement.

In March, Reynolds announced her “Stories of Women’s Lives” tour to highlight Iowa women as part of Women’s History Month. She held 15 events and met with nearly 200 Iowa women from a variety of industries and backgrounds to hear their stories and discuss the obstacles that they face today, both at home and in the workplace.

The “Stories of Women’s Lives” tour received such positive feedback that Reynolds has decided to continue

these meetings through the rest of this year.

“Women from all across the state responded so enthusiastically to my tour back in March that I feel it only makes sense to continue these meetings as I travel to the rest of the 99 counties,” Reynolds said. “It is absolutely critical that we work to engage present and future generations of women in our state. My hope is that through this engagement, we can create a network that will serve as a resource for women statewide.”

Reynolds will resume her “Stories of Women’s Lives” tour in Ringgold, Decatur and Clarke counties later this month. She will continue to use the hashtag #KimTours99 during her travels across the state.

He became a consultant for Longaberger Baskets and Pottery; he served as executive director of Golden Thread retirement community; and worked part-time for Flowers ‘N More, all in Osceola.

On Dec. 23, 2014, Randy married his long-time

partner Ronald William Tilander.

Randy is survived by husband Ron; sister SueAnn D (husband Len) Plato of Burlington, Wis.; brother Ronald L. of West Lafayette, Ind.; nephews, David M. (wife Lori) of West Lafayette, Ind., Thomas G. (wife Ruth) of Boulder, Colo., and John C. (wife Laurie) of West Lafayette, Ind.; grandnephew Dylan A.; and grandnieces, Jessica G., Sara R., Rikki A., Lindsey G. and Cora C. and many dear friends.

Randy was preceded in death were his parents and sister-in-law and special friend Patricia Hullinger.

George Petty, was born Dec. 23, 1937, in Woodland Township of Decatur County.

Shirley grew up in Woodland, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse and later graduated from Garden Grove High School.

Shirley is survived by her nieces and nephews; sisterin-law Marietta Petty of Perry; and other relatives and friends.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and all eight of her siblings and their spouses, Waynoka and Stanley Moore, Georgia and Ivan Kost, Maxine and Raymond Vaughn, Gale and Donna Petty, Reed Petty, Neil and Lucille Petty, Lyle Petty and Gary Petty.

Karen grew up in Osceola. She had lived in Kansas City, Lamoni and Colorado prior to moving to Murray

On July 20, 1974, Karen married Wendell Roland Mathes at the Murray Methodist Church parsonage.

Karen was a daycare provider and had children in her home for the past 37 years.

Karen was a former member of the Murray Community Development Board and a member of the Red Hat Ladies.

Karen is survived by her husband Roland Mathes of Murray; sons, Jeff LaMastres of Murray and Cory (Nikki) Mathes of Peoria, Ariz.; grandchildren, Mike (Devon) of Iowa City, Debbie (Chad) Murray, Christian (Alyson) Murray and Jasmine of Peoria, Ariz.; nine great-grandchildren; Jeff’s father Ray LaMastres of Grinnell, Kan.; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Duffus said the fast-moving storm could have gone from Clarke County up north to Ogden.

“I’m learning what a closed low is,” Duffus said. “I’ve never heard of it.”

According to the National Weather Service, the term usually is used to distinguish a low pressure area aloft from a low-pressure trough.

Duffus said officials from the weather service were scheduled to come Sunday, May 17, or Monday, May 18, to assess the damage.

House continues fight against synthetic drugs

The American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) is again warning of the dangers of synthetic drugs. New synthetics are being produced at a rapid rate and are leading to more calls to the poison control centers around the Country.

The House has been leading the fight against synthetic drugs for the past five years. House File 567 was sent to the Senate to address dangerous synthetic drugs. The Senate amended the bill and sent it back to the House.

According to the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy, and the AAPCC, through the first four months of 2015, poison control centers received 1,900 calls from people seeking help for reactions to synthetic drugs.

This problem will continue to grow until states successfully crack down on the production and distribution of these drugs.

ODCP reports that synthetic drugs are underreported because there is no requirement in Iowa. However, the Iowa Poison Control Center has received 10 calls in April regarding synthetic drug exposure.

Those numbers can be expect-

ed to continually rise until action is taken.

New synthetic drugs continue to pop up around the country.

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a synthetic cathinone called “flakka” is becoming very popular. It can cause “excited delirium” that includes hallucinations, paranoia, and violent action.

On their website NIDA explains “The drug has been liked to deaths by suicide as well as heart attack. It can also dangerously raise body temperature and lead to kidney damage or failure.” You can learn more about this drug and others on their website http://www.drugabuse.gov/drugs-abuse/emerging-trends The House is working to keep Iowans safe through responsible legislation that allows prosecutors more options for charging producers and distributes of synthetic drugs.

Connection Music Festival to be held NORWALK — The second annual Connection Music Festival will feature top acts in Christian music on Saturday, June 6.

This year’s headliner will be Building 429, known for hit songs such as “Where I Belong” and “We Won’t Be Shaken.” The free outdoor concert will be held rain or shine. Gates open at 12:30 p.m. next to Crossroads Church, 2601 Border St. in Norwalk.

Other bands include About a Mile, Bread of Stone, I am They, Jeff Arrandale and We Are Vessel. Josh Brewer will be the evening’s special guest speaker as part of his national speaking tour.

Connection Music Festival was launched in partnership with Lifelight Communications under the leadership of Crossroads Church last year, where Blumer serves as pastor.

Along with live music, a Family Fun Zone will have games for both little and big children. Wristbands for an all-day access to the children’s inflatables will be available for $5.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Coolers will not be allowed on site.

‘Gravel Dust’ author visit, book signing Osceola resident Larry Mongar will be at Osceola Public Library to present his book “Gravel Dust” and to answer questions.

IPTV announces dates for 9th annual ‘Reading Road Trip’ Iowa Public Television announced the dates for the ambitious tour of 71 Iowa libraries during the ninth annual summer Reading Road Trip. Dan Wardell, popular host of the IPTV KIDS Clubhouse, will welcome kids and families in communities across Iowa throughout the summer.

Clarke senior receives 2015 Star Student scholarship Clarke Community High School senior Hannah Reisinger received the 2015 Star Student Scholarship of Iowa in recognition for her scholastic achievements and extracurricular activities.

In addition high academic achievement, Reisinger is active in a variety of extracurricular activities, including FFA, 4H, the Great Plains/Iowa Swine Association and her high school dance team.

She volunteers her time at a local veterinarian’s office and with the Iowa Pork Council at the Iowa State Fair. She plans use her passion for raising and showing livestock to pursue a degree in agricultural business and marketing.

She placed in the 2014 NAM pageant princess division as third runner-up overall, as well as “Most Photogenic,” and “Most Promising

Model.”

This year, she was crowned 2015 Miss Iowa Jr Preteen.

There were 88 girls competing in her age group.

They compete in four categories: public speaking, which requires them to do a personal introduction on stage, interview, which is one on one interviews with six individual judges, community service and donation of school supplies, Busick has chosen to donate to United Methodist Church of Osceola and Blank Children’s Hospital.

For formal wear, to show poise and confidence, she was escorted by her father Shane.

11 area events qualify for state track

EDDYVILLE — A total of 11 area individuals or relays qualified for this week’s Co-ed State Track Meet at the State Qualifying Meets held on May 14.

Highlighting the list of area qualifiers are seven total events representing Clarke at the state meet.

The Clarke girls track team qualified four events and the Clarke boys pushed three events through to the state meet.

The Lady Indians have been strong in the hurdle events all year long, and that was no different at the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet in Eddyville.

Sophomores Bailey and Solanna Zimmerman each qualified in the 100 meter hurdles, with Bailey earning an automatic B. Zimmerman berth by placing second in 16.17 seconds. Solanna had to wait until Saturday evening to find out if she had made it or not, but earned one of the eight at-large berths with her time of 16.63.

The Zimmerman twins also combined with senior Bronwyn Miller and junior Maddi Heath to finish second in the shuttle hurdle relay, earning an automatic berth with their time of 1:11.44.

The Lady Indians have Class 2A’s fourth-fastest time in the state this season in the shuttle hurdle relay, having run 1:08.47 at the South Central Conference Meet.

Clarke’s Alexis Barr punched the fourth ticket to the state meet for the Lady Indians, as she finished second in Barr the high jump competition with her clearance of 5-2. Barr has a best clearance of 5-4 this season, which has her in a tie for second in Class 2A entering the state meet.

For the Clarke boys, senior Gordon Witt, who for the first time in his career qualified for the Drake Relays earlier this year, earned his first trip to the state meet, and he did it in two events.

Witt won the high jump competition with his clearance of 6-4 and also qualified in the Witt

110 meter high hurdles by placing second with his time of 16.01 seconds.

Clarke’s other qualifier was junior Kooper Brimm, who won the shot put competition with his heave of 52-5.50.

Central Decatur qualified three total events, two on the boys side and one on the girls side.

Mathew Cooper finished second in the 100 meter dash with his time of 11.99 seconds to earn an automatic berth into the state meet.

Junior Peyton Pedersen earned an at-large berth in the long jump after finishing third with his leap of 20-1.

Cardinal senior Hallie Linhart also earned an at-large berth in the high jump competition, finishing third with her clearance of 4-10.

Murray’s lone representative is sophomore Jack Jones, who jumped a personal best of 20-1.75 for second place in the Class 1A State Qualifying Meet at Martensdale-St. Marys. That was good enough to earn him an at-large berth into the state meet.

Clarke boys third, girls fourth at SCC tennis Lowry earns all-conference honors

Knoxville swept the South Central Conference tennis tournaments on May 12 in its first year in the conference, as the Clarke boys finished third and the Clarke girls took fourth.

Clarke’s boys team scored 17 points to finish behind Knoxville (23) and Centerville (19).

Clarke’s No. 1 doubles team of Ali Aly and Reed Morris marched to the SCC doubles championship.

Ali and Morris won their first match by a 10-1 score, before defeating Centerville’s team of Spencer Varner and Daniel Berja, 10-7 in the semifinals. Ali and Morris then cruised 10-2 over Centerville’s Devon Glosser and Stevie Cochran in the finals.

In singles play, senior Reed Kale won 6-4 over sophomore Billy Otto in the fifth-place match.

On the girls side, Knoxville scored 19 points to win, followed by Centerville’s 16

points and Davis County’s 13. Clarke scored 11 points in fourth place.

Clarke’s No. 1 doubles team of Sydnee Redman and Dania Echeveste finished runner-up, losing a 10-4 match to Knoxville’s Taylor Carter and Avery Neer in the finals.

Redman and Echeveste won 10-1 in the quarterfinals and 10-6 in the semifinals.

Freshman Sydney Sickels won her first round match 10-4 over Chariton’s Alexis Mullins before losing 10-5 in the quarterfinals.

Sickels then won three matches in the consolation bracket to finish fifth, winning 8-6, 9-7 and 8-5.

Districts In boys district action on May 14, Clarke finished fifth with 10 points. Glenwood won with 14 points, followed

by Creston/O-M and Council Bluffs St. Albert tying with 12.

Kale and Otto each won their first round matches in singles play, with Kale topping Southwest Valley’s Quinton Scott 6-4, 6-1 before falling 6-1, 6-1 to eventual runner-up

Ryan Kucera of Creston/O-M. Otto won 6-0, 6-3 over Shenandoah’s Devon Ashenfelter, before falling 7-5, 6-4 to Glenwood’s Zach Kirkpatrick.

In doubles play, the team of Aly and Morris finished third.

Aly and Morris won 6-3, 6-2 in the first round and cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win in the quarterfinals, before falling 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Aly and Morris won 10-3 in the third-place match.

Regionals In girls regional action on Saturday, Clarke fell to Norwalk 5-1, ending its season with a record of 6-4.

Clarke’s lone win came at No. 1 singles, where Redman won 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) over Liz Nimmo.

Echeveste had a close match at No. 2 singles, where she won the first set 7-5 before falling 6-3, 10-5 in the final two sets.

Lexy Carson also had a close match at No. 6 singles, winning 6-1 in the first set, before dropping the final two sets 7-6 (8-6) and 11-9.

The Clarke golf teams competed in the South Central Conference Meets on May 12, with the girls traveling to Knoxville and the boys hosting.

The Clarke girls placed sixth in the seven-team field with a team score of 451, just six strokes back of Davis County.

ry led the Lady Indians with her 12th-place finish, carding an 18-hole round of 101 to earn all-conference honors.

Courtney Clarke finished just outside of all-conference honors with her round of 107. Freshman Shelby Kentner recorded a round of 123.

Samantha Stickels was the other scoring member of the team with her round of 120.

Alex Stine finished with a 137 and Ann Taylor carded a 145.

Centerville won the SCC championship with a team score of 386. Knox-

ville’s Sierra Findley won medalist honors with her round of 93.

On the boys side, Centerville easily won the conference title with a score of 294, with Knoxville finishing second with a 305.

Clarke finished sixth with a team score of 427.

Carter Wilken led the Indians with his round of 97, shooting a 43 on the back nine. Adam Smith recorded a round of 106.

Weston Brokaw and Damon Helgevold rounded out the team scoring with rounds of 112. John Cutshall finished the day with a score of 128.

Guest speaker Joy Durham, manager of Clarke County Animal Shelter spoke to the group. She shared a lot of information about the laws for stray and abandoned pets in a city with many needing to be changed. She encouraged the group to contact their representatives and gave the addresses and other pertinent information

to accomplish this.

The groups states they can be proud of the shelter and the progress it have made since first opening.

Law enforcement officers are helpful in collecting the strays and delivering them to the shelter whether open or closed. They are caring and concerned about this problem, too.

Sisters Marilyn Fluckey and Jeanne Crittenden gave the program about the orphan train. They shared the history and told about their grandmother’s life with the orphan train, which started in New York and went to many western states. Approximately 20,000 orphans came to Iowa.

You have scars. Perhaps not physical scars, but you have scars. We all have scars. We all have wounds from the painful experiences in our lives. There’s a story in the Old Testament book of Genesis about a guy named Joseph who had lots of scars in his life. Here are a few highlights of his scars.

First, his brothers get angry because his father has asked him to go see how they’re doing and he brings back a report.

So he’s labeled a tattle-tale. Then, there’s the fact that he was his father’s favorite, which never plays well.

Strike three comes when he has this dream about his brothers where they all bow down to him. This guy isn’t exactly working his way in to their good graces, eh? Then, his dad asks him to go check on his brothers again, which he does. And when they see him coming, they decide to kill him because they’re tired of him. Ultimately, they decided not to kill him. Instead, they sold him into slavery.

Fast forward a bit, and he’s found good favor with his master. But his master’s wife also takes a liking to him and tries to seduce him. Because Joseph is a Godly man, he refuses her advances, so she accuses him of sexual assault and he ends up in prison. And the hits just keep on coming, right?

While in prison, a couple of the king’s servants are thrown in jail and they get to know Joseph. Eventually, one of the king’s servants get out of jail, and when the king has a troublesome dream, this servant remembers that Joseph can interpret dreams. So Joseph interprets the dream, which, ultimately, sets him up as the second in command of all the land.

You should read your Bible, it’s filled with fascinating stories like this! There are a lot of details I’ve left out, but here’s where I’m going with this: You know what it’s like to have someone lie about you, don’t you? You’ve experienced betrayal by those you trusted, haven’t you? You’ve had your world rocked by people that you thought had your best interest in mind. So what do you do? How do you respond?

Through a series of events, revenge against his brothers is handed to him on a silver platter. Now God is with him!

Right? And if we’re honest, there’s part of us that really likes this moment because we’re thinking that Joseph’s going to get revenge.

These are the guys who broke his trust and his innocence, the ones who set in motion 13 years of painful experience.

A lot of people feel like they’re owed revenge — perhaps even you. But did anyone deserve more revenge than this guy? Thirteen years of all the stuff he went through — and he chooses to forgive. Because of his choice, the nation of Israel was given a future.

Because Joseph trusted God more than he wanted revenge, he was able to make a choice that saved nations and thousands of people.

So let me ask you: What is revenge for you? And what will it do for you? Maybe for you, revenge is what comes out of your mouth when your husband or wife hurts you or offend you. Maybe revenge is the decision not to forgive a friend. Maybe it’s the decision you make to shut somebody out of your life. The bigger question, though, is: What does it do for you?

Here’s what I know – we have scars. For many of us there are open wounds, and if they’re not treated, they become infected. We cannot go back and re-do the past. We can only move forward — but how? Joseph was able to move forward because he knew that God was with him. Check this out: But the Lord was with Joseph. (Genesis 39:20a, NLT) Joseph found it in his heart to forgive his brothers because he was absolutely confident that God was with him.

And you can be confident that the Lord wants to be with you, as well.

So I close with a reminder and a question. First, the reminder: In the midst of the pain, the disappointment and the struggle, God is with you.

You need to know that. Joseph had 13 years of pain and struggle and questions, but God was with him. And God is with you. We believe it in the good times, but we question it in the bad times, in the times of betrayal, hurt and pain. But the reality is, He is there. So here’s the question: Who do you need to forgive?

A family member? A friend? Someone close to you?

Yourself? Who do you need to forgive? If everything is great in every relationship you have, then wonderful. But if it isn’t, isn’t it time you stepped back and offered the forgiveness that’s been offered to you by God Himself?
