Osceola man pleads not guilty to double homicide charges

An Osceola man has pleaded not guilty to two charges of double homicide.

Richard Ryan Lamb Carson, 38, of Osceola has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Erick Reyna, 22, and Noe Flores Rascon, 27, both of Osceola.

According to a record search of Iowa Courts Online, an arraignment for Carson was scheduled for

9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 12.

However, a written arraignment and plea of not guilty was issued before the scheduled date.

Major parking changes underway during Clarke County Hospital’s expansion

From early spring until mid-fall, be prepared to park in different areas than you’re used to at Clarke County Hospital.

With the hospital’s current expansion project beginning to take shape, a lot of changes are happening to the hospital, especially when it comes to parking.

“It’s going to be a very interesting time where a lot of our community members are going to feel very frustrated,” said Darby Brignac, Clarke County Hospital public relations and marketing.

According to Brignac, Clarke County Hospital’s project is expanding to the south of the facility, which will affect the UnityPoint Clinic, specialty clinic, emergency room department and new lobby.

This means, from now until October, parking is going to be affected in one form or another.

The handicap ramp has also been affected. Currently, there is handicap accessibility through the cafeteria doors, but it isn’t automatic.

For those of you excited that spring is approaching, remember what also comes with it — severe weather and tornado season.

According to Allan Mathias, Clarke County environmental services, Severe Weather Awareness Week is planned March 23-27.

During that week, the statewide tornado drill is planned Wednesday, March 25. According to the National Weather Service’s website, the tornado drill is scheduled approximately 10 a.m. that day.

“This is a good time to check out your plans and test to see if you can hear the siren,” Mathias said.

CLUB NEWS CARSPA met Monday, March 9, at Osceola Senior Center with 11 members present and Dotti VanWerden presiding.

Guest speakers were Dana Hembry and Becky Houghtaling sharing their children’s ministry of “99 Ways.”

This year, kindergarten through fifth graders are involved with more than 30 volunteers on Mondays after school. A new program has been started for sixth graders on the same day called “Under Construction.”

Hembry is also working with a mentoring/bible study for parents to help with parenting, jobs and other issues, which is held in the evenings at a different location..

Jeri Lytton accompanied the group with the singing of “Grace.” Hostess Jan Chambers, with the help of Sharon Cameron and Patsy Holst, served “St. Patrick’s Day” cookies and mini cupcakes, coffee, and shared festive table decorations with the group.

Jan Chambers presented the book she purchased for the Osceola Library in memory of longtime member Margaret Mitchell. All were pleased with her selection, “Secrets of Mental Math.”

The meeting adjourned at 10:45 a.m.

President Mildred Ashley opened the meeting at noon with nine members answering roll call, “Share your memories or thoughts about St. Patrick’s Day.” Several mentioned being of Irish descent and liking corned beef and cabbage.

The club hadn’t met since last November and it was good to be together again for food and fellowship.

Two books will be purchased for the Osceola Library in memory of the club’s members: Margaret Mitchell and Noreen McMurray.

Ashley also had the program. She shared two stories from “Country” Magazine: “That Ornery Model A” and “Talk About Getting My Goat.”

Getting back to better: Workshop energizes people with ongoing health conditions For most of her adult life, Helen didn’t worry much about her health. Then at 67, she was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. She tried to follow her doctor’s advice to take her medications, exercise and eat better. But often she was tired and even a little depressed. “I figured it was just part of getting older,” she recalled.

Then, a friend told Helen about the Better Choices, Better Health Workshop — six weekly sessions sponsored by Clarke County Public Health.

Developed at Stanford University, the workshop has been offered at hundreds of locations throughout the United States. It helps participants with ongoing health conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, heart disease and others to: • Find better ways of dealing with pain and fatigue • Discover easy exercises to help improve or maintain strength and energy • Learn the appropriate use of medications • Improve nutrition • Talk effectively with family, friends and health professionals • Understand new treatment choices

• Feel better about life “I now have a new sense of being in control,” Helen said. “The workshop has really helped me put life back in my life. The exercises are extremely helpful and easy to do. Making an action plan each week helps keep me on track.”

Taught by specially trained volunteer leaders, some who have health conditions themselves, the program covers a new topic each week and provides opportunities for interaction and group problem solving.

“We are really more like coaches,” said Marcia Blain, one of the leaders of the workshop. “The answer to someone’s question is usually in the room.”

The next Better Choices, Better Health Workshop begins Tuesday, April 7, and ends May 12. Sessions will take place every Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for six weeks and will be held at the in Osceola First Christian Church.

CCH advocates importance of colonoscopy March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and Clarke County Hospital encourages people over the age of 50 to be screened for colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in both men and women, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), yet it is often preventable through early detection and treatment. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), if everyone aged 50 years or older had regular screening tests, then at least 60 percent of deaths from colon

cancer could be avoided.

Colon cancer starts as polyps, or a small clump of cells that form on the lining of the colon. Most colon polyps are harmless but evolve into cancer over time. Polyps often don’t have symptoms, so regular screening tests, such as a colonoscopy, detect and remove growths safely before they become cancerous.

noscopy is the best way to screen the entire colon and remove unwanted growths in one single procedure,� said Dr. Conte. “In most cases, patients who have a colonoscopy do not need to be screened for another 10 years.�

Risk factors for colon cancer include a diet high in red meat and processed meats. Conversely, a diet

high in vegetables, fruits and whole grains will decrease risk. Other factors include physical inactivity, obesity, smoking and heavy alcohol use.

Donna K. Stubbs, daughter of Margaret (Eckard) and Harry Biggs, was born Sept.

25, 1943, in Los Angeles, Calif.

Donna moved to Iowa in 1966 and worked at various jobs until she started at Siemens and worked there until it closed in 2003. Most recently she worked in the kitchen at Clarke County Hospital until she retired at the age of 70.

Donna is survived by her special friend Beth Lingle of Osceola; mother Margaret Noegel of Osceola; daughters, Janelle (Jeff) Smith of Osceola, Rickie (Melvin) Stokes, Terri Helmke and Cora Stubbs; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Donna was preceded in death by her father and grandparents.

Expanding the Iowa Medical Cannabidiol Act

I’m urging all Iowa lawmakers and the couple of groups that really have the governor and legislators ears right now, Concerned Iowans for Medical Cannabis and Iowans 4 Medical Cannabis, please do not get Iowans another bungled medical cannabis law!

It’s the 21st century, modern medicine and common sense dictate we need whole plant full spectrum, for every illness, or better yet, any illness a doctor and patient decide amongst themselves that it may help. Do not allow a monopoly on distribution, you wouldn’t do that with a pharmacy plus competition and product abundance allow for much lower costs, it is medicine, after all.

About every month, and oftentimes more, brand new healing abilities are being discovered, new studies and updated studies validating previous studies are being released.

You want more studies? Better yet, human studies? We’re here, we’re willing and we’re ready!

We have actual illnesses, don’t lock them out before they’re cure or relief is even known about just because you don’t like recreational users or whatever reasons you want to have.

If you’re truly “for the patient,” then go get the only effective medical cannabis law Iowa needs and that every Iowan deserves. Iowa’s dark, dirty secret — puppy mills

Man’s best friend needs our help! I bet that most of you readers have no idea that Iowa has the second largest number of puppy mills in the United States.

Thousands of dogs are suffering in these puppy mills right now. They live their lives in small, cramped wire cages that have wire bottoms in them.

Many of them have no protection from the winter’s bitter cold temperatures. Many of the USDA kennels keep their dogs in complete darkness their entire lives? Can you imagine?

At least 47 percent of Iowa’s 220 plus USDA large-scale dog breeding facilities were cited for violations in 2014. Eighteen percent of those were serious violations. Iowa is better than this and it’s time we made some changes to protect these dogs.

Legislation is moving through the state’s capitol now that will provide additional protections for the 15,000 adult dogs in Iowa’s USDA kennels.

We can make a difference for these dogs and for Iowa.

Let’s work together to end Iowa’s dark, dirty secret. Let’s end Iowa’s puppy mills.

Senate File 130 was sent to the governor this week. The bill passed both chambers unanimously and makes a change to the National Guard Education Assistance Program aimed at helping more soldiers complete their undergraduate degrees.

The National Guard Education Assistance Program (NGEAP) is a state funded tuition assistance program that pays schools “up front” for the cost of tuition for a soldier.

In order to qualify for NGEAP benefits, a soldier must be an Iowa resident and an active member of the Iowa Army or Air National Guard with a satisfactory performance of duty.

Additionally, the individual must have completed initial entry training. Applicants must not already have a baccalaureate degree and must attend a North Central Association accredited community

college, university, or private college or university in Iowa.

If all requirements are met, NGEAP will pay at least 50 percent of the tuition rate at state Board of Regents schools or 50 percent or the tuition rate at the institution the soldier chooses, whichever is lower. NGEAP funding is not available for summer courses.

Current law limits participation in NGEAP to a certain number of semesters (depend-

ing on full-time or part-time status). Senate File 130 changes that limitation by providing that an eligible member of the National Guard can receive this assistance for up to 120 credit hours of undergraduate coursework as opposed to the prior limitation based on semesters.

The hope is that more soldiers will finish their baccalaureate degrees with the help of NGEAP despite it taking longer than the traditional four years.

Interested soldiers can apply online at https://ihaveaplaniowa.gov/default.aspx. Applications must be submitted by July 1 for the fall term and December 1 for the spring term.

When it comes to a first-degree murder charge, it is a capitol offense, and if a person is found guilty, that is an automatic sentence of life in prison with no eligibility of parole.

I-35’s White earns first-team all-state nod

Interstate 35 junior Jaylan White performed like one of the best basketball players in the state this season.

After leading Class 2A in scoring, assists and steals, White was rewarded by earning first-team all-state honors from the Iowa Newspaper Association, which released its all-state teams Tuesday morning.

White also received first-team recognition from the Des Moines Register.

The 5-9 junior point g u a r d a v e r aged 23.9 points per game to go with 188 assists and 127 White steals.

That averages out to 7.8 assists and 5.3 steals per game.

“He is a very unique, once in a coaching career player,” Interstate 35 head coach Nate Rankin said.

“He’s a pleasure. Not only just a great basketball player, he’s a wonderful kid. He’s great to be around. He challenges me to be a better coach every day. He makes everyone around him better. That’s the thing people don’t understand.”

White ranked second in the Pride of Iowa Conference scoring race, behind Nodaway Valley junior Jackson Lamb, who earned a first-team selection in Class 1A. He shot 55.4 percent from the floor and knocked down 30 3-pointers, hitting at a 43.5 percent rate from behind the arc.

“He made the looks that good,” Rankin said.

“He’s the emphasis on every team that comes in there to try to slow him down. It wasn’t like he got open looks every time. A lot of his shots were con-

tested. He just worked on it, worked on it and made himself better.”

White improved his 3-point shooting from last year, when he made only 15 3-pointers at a 29.4 percent rate and only 42.7 percent from the field overall.

“I felt leadership, he really improved on,” Rankin said. “Outside shooting, that’s what we did every time he hit the gym this summer. Just shot as many threes as we could.

Went back to fundamentals. Tried to make it a consistent 3-point shot every time, where last year it wasn’t. Spent a lot of time on the gun, that’s for sure.”

White’s ability to break down a defense and get to the rim, or to kick out to an open teammate makes the Interstate 35 offense go.

His court vision is one of his biggest assets.

“The things he does, you can’t just step off the street and play with him,” Rankin said. “You have to get comfortable with him, or you’re going to take a ball off the head. He can hit them (teammates) at the optimum time to hit a bucket.”

White, a Division I prospect, can change a game on the defensive side of the ball, as well.

“He’s probably the quickest side to side I’ve ever seen in our area,” Rankin said. “Defensively, he can change a game.

Offensively, he can take it over. In a close game, it’s hard to beat a guard who can make free throws. It’s a nice luxury to have.”

Night after night, White puts up big offensive numbers while also defending the opposing team’s best guards, often times, shutting them down. Rankin estimated that White, between scoring and his assists, is responsible for about 50 percent of Interstate 35’s points.

For that, the team was rewarded Tuesday morning with junior Peyton Pedersen earning third-team allstate honors by the Iowa Newspaper Association.

“I think it’s a huge credit to Peyton and the work he’s put in, but it’s also a credit to his teammates, because you don’t get a guy on that team unless you have a successful season,” Central Decatur head coach Zach Clark said. “The great thing about Peyton is he understands that and is thankful to play with some talented guys. He’s put in a lot of work, ton of time.”

White’s impact on the court has gone beyond just with his team, however.

“With him, it’s been a great program-changer for me,” Rankin said. “Everybody wants to play basketball, because they come to the games and see how exciting Jaylan is. Our youth numbers are higher than they’ve ever been.”

His game developed to include more scoring in the post this season, something Clark said helped round out Pedersen’s game.

“He scored it in the post more than he has in the past,” Clark said. “His freshman year, all he really did was shoot threes. Last year, he expanded his game and could beat people off the dribble. This year, he could shoot the three, take it off the dribble and get in the post and score.”

Clark said with his ability to score in a variety of ways, Pedersen has turned himself into a solid basketball player.

“He’s got all of the skills, all of the tools to score the basketball,” Clark said.

“He’s 6-3, he’s long, he’s athletic. He can go up and dunk the basketball whenever he wants. He has all the tools to be a really good high school basketball player, and he’s going to be a really good college basketball player one day, too.”

Pedersen also ranked second on the team with 53 assists, while leading the Cardinals with 46 steals. His 18 blocked shots ranked second on the team.

He finished second with 5.1 rebounds per game for the Cardinals.

“When he really decides to rebound, he rebounds the basketball well,” Clark said. “He really stepped up on that side of things this year, rebounding the basketball when we had to have them. He gets assists.

He’s just involved all the time with every possession.

That’s what it takes for us to be successful.”

Clark said Pedersen will need to continue improving with his left hand next year, and also continue to improve at finishing at the rim.

Stepping into a leadership role on the defensive side of the ball is another area Clark hopes Pedersen can show improvement.

“We talked to him about being more comfortable with his left hand and using that,” Clark said. “There were times during the season he didn’t always finish.

I think as his confidence grew and he realized how easy it is to dunk the basketball, I think we’ll see more of that.

“Defensively, the big key for us is how he’s going to lead us defensively and leads in communication.

Noah Simon was really that guy for us this year. That’s got to be Peyton next year.

He’s got to step up and fill that role if he wants to be successful defensively.”

But Clark also knows that Pedersen will put the time in to improve in those areas, both on his own and playing on the AAU circuit during the spring and summer.

“We’re excited. He’s really good about talking to his teammates about getting in the gym,” Clark said. “Those guys, there’s a group of four or five of them that have gotten together and done things already. He’ll go play AAU this spring and summer and have those guys around him. We have a chance to have another really good year.”

— Minnesota State freshman Libby Bemis of Osceola was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Bemis went 4-0 last week during the second half of the College Spring g a m e s and has now won her last Bemis six starts.

Her week was highlighted by the first no-hitter in two seasons at MSU, as she struck out eight batters, while issuing three walks in the Mavericks’ 10-0 win over Merrimack in six innings.

For the week, Bemis boasted a 0.57 earned run average with 30 strikeouts in 24.2 innings pitched. She held opposing batters to a .180 batting average, as she gave up just three runs, two earned.

Teammate Tatum Klein of Iowa City won the NSIC Player of the Week award after hitting .615 for the week with eight stolen bases.

The Mavericks travel to St. Joseph, Mo., this weekend to take part in the Missouri Western State Tournament. Minnesota State plays Missouri Western State at 10 a.m. Friday and then plays Northwest Missouri State University at 4 p.m. Friday.

The team averages a composite 29.8 on the ACT, a grade point average of 4.0 and scoring average of 18.5 points per game. Eighteen of the selected players rank first in their class academically.

Jesus answered, “Neither he nor his parents. This happened so that God’s mighty works might be displayed in him.”

After he said this, he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and smeared the mud on the man’s eyes.

Jesus said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (this word means sent). So the man went away and washed.

Life kicks up dirt and dust quite often, blurring our vision of the presence of Christ in our midst. Sometimes life spits on us (and worse), and we are blinded by the illusion that these struggles define our lives.

We can become as blind as the man Jesus met that day. We are blinded by the illusionary definition of life the world markets to us. We lose sight (literally) of the reminders and glimpses of heaven God shows us daily.

When we allow Him to wash and clear our vision (a daily spiritual practice, not a one-time thing), our lives gain new and powerful focus and strength. As we live daily in this way, we are truly “Sent” to demonstrate His amazing, grace-filled presence in the world – like the man who was born blind. We will discover new sight for true life, just as the dad in the hospital hallway did that day.

I invite you to think and pray: What “dust,” “dirt,” and “life-spit” is blurring and/or blinding you to the Lord’s presence in your life today? Middle school band students to perform in South Central Conference Honor Band Fourteen middle school band members will be representing Clarke in the South Central Conference Honor Band on Monday, March 23.

Other schools in the conference include Albia, Centerville, Chariton, Davis County, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont and Knox-

ville.

Each school will be sending seven seventh-grade students and seven eighthgrade students to participate in this honor band.

Albia will host the event this year.

The Clarke seventh grade band will be represented by Kenna DeVore

(flute), Rhiannon McFarland (oboe), Bailey Smith (clarinet), Devin DeVore (tenor sax), Hunter Marple (trumpet), Brian Avalos (trombone) and Fabian Zavala (tuba).

The Clarke eighth grade band will be represented

by Victoria Swartz (flute), Audrey Kindred (clari-

net), Georgeann Hicks (alto sax), Kyle Haltom (bari sax), Sammie Belden (French horn), Cameron Johnson (trombone) and Anna Hanson (percussion).

All of these band members are students of Christie Averweg, Clarke Community Middle School

band director.

Students have been given four pieces of music to practice in advance of the honor band.

On March 23, all of the students from the various schools will rehearse together in Albia during the afternoon as an ensemble for the first time. Then, that

evening, they will present a concert for the public.

The guest conductor will be Bernie Allgood, the retired band director from Albia Middle School.

The concert will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Albia High School “A” Gym. Admission to the concert is $3 per adult and $1 per student.
