WWII medals finally awarded to family Byron veteran’s relatives receive the medals he earned for bravery

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The family of a Byron World War II veteran finally received his decorations for bravery last week, almost 74 years after he earned them.

Staff Sergeant Gene Sabin was honored during a ceremony held Dec. 17 at the U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s office in Ottawa.

Kinzinger presented Sabin’s award, a Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster pin denoting a second award of the same medal, to his grandson Mike Schabacker, of Stillman Valley, while several other family members watched.

He also presented Sabin’s campaign medals, good conduct medal, World War II victory medal and Combat Infantryman’s Badge to the family.

Kinzinger explained that Sabin’s service records were among the millions of files lost in the 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis.

Born in Sycamore in 1920, Sabin lived most of his life in Byron, and died in 1984.

Schabacker said that after his grandmother died, family members found a letter Sabin had written, asking about the Bronze Stars he had never received.

He then contacted Kinzinger to see if anything could be done.

Although most of the records were destroyed, a few partial records were located, Schabacker said.

“They were able to establish he was awarded two Bronze Stars for heroic action,” he said. “I was very excited we were able to get it straightened out — it’s official now.”

While there are no records of Sabin’s decorations, Bill Lenches, the executive director and curator of the 12th Armored Division Museum in Abilene, Texas, provided some information.

“Gene Sabin served as a squad leader in the 3rd Platoon of B Company, 66th Armored Infantry Battalion,” he said.

“One of his fellow members of the 66th anecdotally recalls that (one decoration) was awarded for action in the Vosges Mountains (in France) most probably during the 12th Armored’s participation in the Colmar Pocket operation in February of 1945.

“According to George O’Bryan of the 66th, when one of Gene’s men spotted a German soldier taking aim at him, Gene, instead of immediately firing or

Assessments, Planning & Zoning will no longer give input

Board chairman Kim Gouker, of Byron, said the county is allowed to have an interim supervisor for 60 days while it seeks a permanent replacement for Harrison.

The resolution to appoint Magnuson also included a section allowing the county board to study the feasibility of combining the supervisor’s office with another county office or department.

Gouker said that while that move would save money, the legalities still need to be reviewed by state’s attorney Eric Morrow.

Sabin’s daughter, Sharon Schabacker, said her father was drafted into the Army when he was 22, causing him to be nicknamed “Pops” due to his age in relation to the younger soldiers.

After the war, she said, her father would never talk about his experiences with him family — only with his wartime buddies at annual reunions of the 12th Armored Division.

Lyle Hopkins, of Polo, also objected. “I feel that step is a very important step,” he said.

However, board member Marcia Heuer, of Oregon, said county board should consider only the ZBA’s recommendation because it is “judicial” and hears only sworn testimony from both sides in the same room.

The measure passed 17 to 7.

In another matter, the board appointed Carol Magnuson, of Oregon, to serve as interim Supervisor of Assessments after current Supervisor Jim Harrison retires at the end of this month.

The Ogle County Board has eliminated one step in the zoning process.

The board approved an ordinance to the zoning map amendment and special use permit procedure Dec. 18 that makes the Supervisor of Assessments and Planning & Zoning Committee’s recommendation no longer necessary.

Up to now, after the Zoning Board of Appeals heard a zoning request, it would report its findings to the committee, which also then made a recommendation to the county board on the same request.

The county board makes the final decision on all zoning requests after considering the recommendations.

Now, according to the new ordinance, the ZBA will report

its findings directly to the county board without going through the Supervisor of Assessments and Planning & Zoning Committee.

Three county board members who are also members of the committee objected.

Wayne Reising, of Oregon, said the move would be a “disservice” to the county board.

Tom Smith, of Rochelle, agreed.

“We’re the elected people,” he said “Now you want to take us out of the equation.”

The Supervisor of Assessments and Planning & Zoning Committee is made up of seven county board members.

Stillman Valley man honored for saving friend’s life Carlson began CPR immediately after heart attack

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A Stillman Valley man was honored last week for saving the life of a high school classmate.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle presented the 911 Hero Award to Russell Carlson Dec. 20 for his quick response when Gary Hollingsworth, 79, of Holcomb, suffered a heart attack last summer.

Carlson credited the CPR training he had 30 years ago when he was a volunteer fireman.

“Taking CPR classes every year was stressed, and I took them,” he said with a smile. “Year after year, as you all know, it can get boring.

But I guess it kicked in.”

Carlson became tearful, remembering the August day that he used his skills.

“I got a second chance - I had cancer in 2002, and I wanted Gary to get his second chance,” he said. “I’ve known him since high school.”

Hollingsworth, who had quadruple heart bypass surgery 19 years ago, said he and his wife were hosting a luncheon at their home when he suddenly was stricken.

Concert brings in $1,260 for local food pantries This year’s donations set all-time record The 14th annual community Christmas concert presented Dec. 2 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Morris, raised a record $1,260 in donations for two local food pantries:

Loaves and Fish in Mt. Morris and Life-Line in Oregon.

More than 260 people attended the free concert presented by 14 instrumentalists and 46 singers from throughout northwest Illinois.

Thanks to financial supporters covering the cost of the event, all $1,260 from the freewill offering was donated to the food pantries.

This year’s concert, “The Winter Rose,” by Joseph and Pamela Martin, was directed by Dr. Matthew Guschi.

Since its inception in 2004, the concert has been offered free to the public, with monetary donations given to local charities.

For the 12th year, the beneficiaries were the two food pantries, which

have each received, on average, about $500 each year since 2010.

Musicians from communities throughout northwest Illinois, including Ashton, Byron, Davis Junction, Dixon, Forreston, Freeport, Leaf River, Mt. Morris, Oregon, Polo, Rochelle, Rockford and Winnebago, took part in the concert.

Jan. 9 is Forreston Cardinals Day in Ogle County

The Ogle County Board declared Wednesday, Jan. 9 as Forreston Cardinals Football State Championship Day in the county.

The Cardinals won their third state championship in five years in Class 1A Nov. 23 when they defeated the Camp Point Central Panthers 44-6 at a game held at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

Board chairman Kim Gouker designated board member Dean Fox, of German Valley, to present

the proclamation to FHS officials.

“Therefore be it resolved, on this 18th day of December, 2018, in recognition of their hard work and dedication, and the honor they have brought to all of the citizens of Ogle County, by winning their third state football championship in a span of five years, the Ogle Country Board hereby

designates that Wednesday, January 9, 2019, shall be recognized as Forreston Cardinals Football State Championship Day, in all of Ogle County, Illinois, and encourage all residents of Ogle County to join in recognition of this fine and exemplary group of young men, and their entire coaching staff,” the proclamation reads.

He said the Lynn Scott Rock Fire Department got the 911 call at 5:08 p.m. on Aug. 31.

Carlson immediately began chest compressions while another luncheon guest Dorothy Hollandsworth dialed 911.

EMTs Todd Seaworth, Mike Alsup, and Bill Newkirk soon arrived, along with paramedic Chris Kunce.

“By 5:31 you had a normal heartbeat and normal breathing, and that was before you ever got to Swedish American,” Mott told Hollingsworth.

He stressed that Carlson’s early intervention was the key to Hollingsworth’s successful recovery.

Mott said Hollingsworth wanted to meet and personally thank the emergency responders who came to the scene, as well as telecommunicator Brian Symons, who answered the 911 call.

Cann made teaching her career for 40-plus years Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

1937 that her grandmother Martha Cann and her daughter Stella were the first ones to cross the new Oregon bridge in 1837 in their horse and buggy.

Can you remember?

When a penny would buy a “penny pencil.”

When five cents would buy a pencil tablet. We never used ink paper.

When you always walked to school.

When country pupils drove a horse and buggy or walked to school.

When there was no “gym” so you did exercises in your school room.

When there was no inside plumbing.

When ink came in bottles and you used a dip pen. When you sat in double seats.

When you took turns cleaning the blackboards and clapping the erasers outside to clean them.

When the students wondered how old their teacher was and what about her love life.

When a teacher was dismissed if she got married. When a teacher would give the community three weekends out of four.

When girls couldn’t wear slacks to school or the boys leave their shirt tails out.

When mothers had long hair done up in a braid or a French twist and their daughters wore long braids or long curls with big bows.

When there were no electric lights in the schools, just lamps.

When teachers provided clothes for the needy and provided a haircut for the boys.

When parents often visited their children’s classes, they begged their mothers to come to school.

When boys played marbles and girls jumped rope or played Pump, Pump, Pull Away.

When boys who wore overalls didn’t feel right and teachers felt sorry for them.

Gertrude Cann was born in Chana, is the daughter of George and Hazel Tilton Cann.

She attended Rochelle High School and Northern Illinois University.

She began her teaching career in Malta in 1926.

She moved with her parents in 1927 to Oregon and worked in the county superintendent’s office for eight years.

Gertrude’s father George was a well known educator throughout northern Illinois.

He taught in schools in Ogle, Lee, and De Kalb counties before he became Ogle County Superintendent of Schools in 1926.

After George was defeated by Wilbur Pickering in 1932, Gertrude resumed her teaching career in the Oregon School District for 40 years.

Her father was an avid fisherman in the Rock River during much of his spare time.

1938 it was announced that former “Ogle County School Chief George F. Cann Drowns in the Rock River.”

Witnesses said, “He fell into the river when he dropped an anchor from the boat into the water.

As the anchor fell, the boat lurched throwing him into Rock River. The accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. south of Illinois Northern Utilities company power dam.”

Gertrude was a member of Oregon United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.

Being active in local organizations she was a member of Illinois Retired Teachers Association, Oregon Women’s Club, Eagle’s Nest Art Group,

She was also actively involved in Girl Scouts in Oregon and the Oregon Tourist Information Center.

Jim and Linda Auth now own the former Cann home located at 203 S. Seventh St. They had heard stories concerning the Cann Family.

Gertrude’s brother Morris, who owned a radio and TV store shop on North Fifth Street, lived in the Cann home at South Seventh Street.

Gertrude lived to be 96 and she is buried beside her parents at Washington Grove Cemetery.

Workshop on how to identify trees, shrubs is Jan. 5 Lean how to identify trees in the winter The Natural Land Institute will host the Winter Tree & Shrub Identification Workshop on Saturday, Jan. 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The workshop will be led by NLI’s Director of Stewardship, Zach Grycan, and Melissa Grycan, Stewardship Technician for The Land Conservancy of McHenry County.

Participants will learn how to identify native and non-native trees and shrubs by buds, twigs, and bark.

The workshop will start with an indoor classroom session to be held at Natural Land Institute’s office, 320 S. 3rd St., in Rockford, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

There will be a break for lunch with the afternoon session incorporating hands-on learning with a walk from 1– 2 p.m. at Klehm Arboretum & Botanic Garden, 2715 S. Main St., Rockford.

Cost is $20 per person. Lunch is not provided.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training also earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Naber is the daughter of Phil and Shawn Naber, of Chana, and is a 2016 graduate of Oregon High School.

Meeting to plan Black Hawk plaza is Jan. 15

Simpson to present geology program on Jan. 8

A planning meeting to share ideas for the renovation of the plaza around the Black Hawk Statue is scheduled on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at Nash Recreation Center, Oregon.

George Bellovics, landscape architect for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, will lead the meeting.

The plaza area includes the parking lot, walk-ways,

interpretive kiosks, viewing area with rock wall, and accessories such as benches and landscaping.

All interested persons and community leaders are encouraged to attend to lend their ideas for development of the new plaza.

Retired Highland Community College professor Steve Simpson will present a program on “Every Rock Tells a Story” at the Northwest Illinois Audubon monthly meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ, 1010 Park Blvd., Freeport.

Drawing on his 32-year career teaching geology, Simpson will tell stories as revealed by rocks.

Attendees are encouraged to bring rocks and fossils for “analysis” and discussion.

He will also share some of his favorite stories about rocks and their discoveries by careful investigations of geologists.

A program about tracking will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Oakdale Nature Preserve near Freeport.

The age-old art of tracking was an essential life skill for early peoples.

Today, tracking gives us a way to learn what animals are present and what they are doing when we cannot see them.

The program will begin at the Mogle Center at Oakdale.

Participants should dress for the weather including footwear for snow.

Partnership for creative classes offered by OPD The Oregon Park District and Village of Progress have partnered to offer creative expression classes throughout the year.

The January class will create a child-size snowman porch decoration.

“Allow your child to express their creativity and create projects out of recycled materials with the

consumers and staff from the Village of Progress,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of receation for the park district. “Kids ages K-3rd will be working alongside people with developmental disability to create a child-size porch decoration of a snowman to decorate your home.

Each participant must be accompanied by an adult.”

Class will be on Friday, Jan. 18 from 12:30-2 p.m., which is a half day of school for Oregon School District students.

“The fee is just $6 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $7 for non-residents,” Ketter said. “The deadline to register is Friday, Jan. 11. Register at www.oregonpark. org or call 815-732-3101.”

The partnership is able to continue this program thanks to a Douglas and Lynn M. Roberts Family Foundation Grant.

The program is for children ages five and six years old, along with a parent or guardian, and will start at 10:30 a.m.

Wee Nats is offered the first Saturday of each month through May. It will last approximately one hour and each month will have a different nature

theme.

The program includes a lesson, story, craft, and a hike. The cost is $5 per child and there will be a 15 student limit.

January’s program will study animals who live under the snow.

Oregon Elementary School food drive exceeds goal Students collect 1,200 items for Lifeline The fifth and sixth grade Student Ambassadors at Oregon Elementary School easily exceeded the goal they set for a recent Christmas food drive.

“They set a goal of 1,000 items,” said school counselor Crystal Stewart. “We were able to surpass that and brought in 1,200 items.”

The food collected went to the Lifeline Food Pantry in Oregon.

Stewart said the Ambassadors decided they wanted to serve the community by holding a school-wide food drive at Christmas time.

The items were collected from Dec. 3-19. Each age group from pre-

kindergarten through sixth grade was assigned a category of food to bring in.

The Ambassadors collected the food daily, sorted and counted it, and loaded it into the vehicles when Lifeline volunteers came to pick it up.

“A big thank you to all the kids that helped with the food drive at Oregon Elementary School,” said Lifeline volunteer Gary Monnahan in a Facebook post. “They not only collected the food but loaded them in our cars. Thank you to all the parents that took the time and expense of helping the needy families we have in our community, and thanks to the teachers in this great community.”

Believe it or not, the season is halfway over for the Oregon girls basketball team.

Sporting a 5-10 record, the Lady Hawks are playing in the very competitive Dixon Holiday Tournament this week before embarking on the remainder of its BNC slate.

As expected, it has been junior Olivia Lambrigtsen leading the way on the relatively inexperienced team.

“It’s just her and two seniors that we have back,” Oregon coach Wendy Lambrigtsen said. “Olivia is being the leader on the floor, vocally and physically.

She can play the post or on the point.”

Senior Hannah Donaldson has also been valuable for her contributions all over the court and her shooting touch.

“Hannah has been important for us,” Lambrigtsen said. “Lauren Montavon (5-foot-10) battles and battles inside for us. She’s knowledgeable and opens up options for us.”

The tallest player on the team is 6-2 sophomore Brenna Noon.

“I hate to say she’s catching up to the game, but she didn’t start until eighth grade,” Lambrigtsen said.

“She’s improving, but needs to be more aggressive.”

Another sophomore seeing playing time is Ella Martin.

“She’s such a tough cookie,” Lambrigtsen said.

“Ella has great mental toughness and is selective with her shooting.”

In Lambrigtsen’s game plan, it helps to be able to play more than one spot on the floor. Breanna DeHaan has been an example of that.

“Breanna is interchangeable. She pushes the ball and picks up a slew of rebounds,” Lambrigtsen said.

One disappointment this season has been Oregon’s inability to be competitive for all four quarters.

“I would say one of our goals was to compete in every single game,” Lambrigtsen said. “In some, we weren’t. We need to buckle down and make a concerted effort. I see promise for the Dixon tournament.”

An example of the team growth is the before and after with Sterling Newman. Earlier in the year, the Comets put a 27-point beating on Oregon.

At the Polo tournament, the Hawks had the lead at times and only lost by seven.

“It was a stark contrast to earlier,” Lambrigtsen said.

Oregon placed seventh at Polo, beating Milledgeville 46-20 in its final game.

Against Rockford Lutheran, which saw its star player transfer, but it still a solid program, Oregon only lost 56-50.

“We almost beat them. We broke the press with ease and caused a terrible shooting game for them,” Lambrigtsen said.

Another positive seen by Lambrigtsen is team bonding.

“They are a determined group of kids,” she added.

“They all get along ands there is no jealousy or static among them.”

In the post season, Oregon will be hosting the 2A sectional.

Hawks prep for tough January basketball schedule

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com With the 59th Annual Forreston basketball tournament completed, the Oregon boys basketball team takes a break before heading into January action.

With a 6-6 record overall, Oregon is right on target with goals set earlier in the year by coach Quinn Virgil.

“That was our goal. We’re hoping to be .500 this season,” Virgil said.

At Forreston, the Hawks lost their first two contests against River Ridge and Freeport Aquin.

Then, they came back to beat Orangeville and Pecatonica for a 13th-place finish.

“In the first two games, I thought we played hard,” Virgil said. “But, we didn’t play well. We had 28 turnovers in each game.”

Against No. 4 seed River Ridge, Oregon stayed close in the first half, but were blown away in the second half. The Hawks were hurt by 8-for22 free-throw shooting.

Rebounding against Orangeville, the Hawks held the lead for the duration, but never could put the Broncos away.

“We showed signs of improvement,” Virgil added.

In the Pec game for 13th place, it was a re-match from a Thanksgiving tilt in which Oregon won by holding off a late Pec rally.

It was more of the same this time out, with the Indians almost coming behind for a 65-63 win.

Led by Trey Woolsey nailing 9-of-9 free throws and only committing 13 turnovers, the Hawks held on for the win.

“Against Pec, we were able to make free throws down the stretch,” Virgil said.

Dec. 20 - Oregon 65, Pecatonica 63: The Hawks held off a late charge by the Indians to claim 13th place at Forreston. Woolsey hit four 3-pointers and led all scorers with 27 points for Oregon. Noah Campos also hit four 3s and scored 18 points, and Dalton Hermes had 15.

BY RANDY HOLLAND The Oregon wrestlers hosted the number three Dakota Indians at the Blackhawk Center on Dec. 18 and the Hawks got a lesson on how much they need to improve to get back to the top echelons of Northern Illinois wrestling.

The Hawks got off to a good start with a win

by Chase Clark, but it would be seven matches before Andrew Herbst would take a major decision for a second win.

Jacob Milliman scored a pin in the next match and that would be it as the Hawks went down 57-13.

Clark hit a double leg takedown in the first period of the 152 pound match, worked the half nelson on top in the second but did not score. He went underneath for a reverse in the third, picking up a stalling point at the end of a 5-0 decision.

At 160, Austin Ebert was saved by the buzzer in a chicken wing at the end of the first, lost a three point nearfall in a half nelson in the second.

He gave up two takedowns in the third, the last with two seconds left to lose a 17-5 major decision.

Daniel Dominguez lost a takedown in a headlock and was turned in a half nelson at 1:24 at 170.

Against fifth ranked Andrew Wenzel at 182, Zachary Crandall lost outside single leg takedowns in the first and second periods.

He was countered for two more takedowns in the third before he lost two points in a half nelson

At 195, Adam Glendenning lost a takedown and two points in a chicken wing in the first period before he switched into a double for a reverse. He trailed 4-2 when he lost a reverse off his head and went over in a chicken wing at 3:56.

Oregon forfeited 220, 285 was a double forfeit, and the Hawks forfeited 106 to trail 27-3.

Herbst caught a heel pick and fought off an

escape at the end of the first. The score was tied when he lost a reverse at the start of the second, but he switched to get back on top and snagged a cradle for three points to take a 7-3 lead.

A counter to the back and a half nelson for three points gave him the 13-3 win.

Milliman’s win was over honorable mention Conner Elmer. He lost a reverse but rolled over and caught a half nelson for the fall at 1:32.

At 126, Jared Glendenning was saved by the bell in a guillotine at the end of the first. He lost a high crotch to his back for five points in the second before he was taken over the front in a chicken wing at 2:34.

Isaac Brooks lost an outside single and was pinned in a chicken wing in 57 seconds in the 132 pound match and the Hawks had to forfeit 138 and 145 because of injuries and that concluded the meet.

Sam Minnis fought out of a chicken wing in the first period but could not get out of one in the third, getting pinned at 4:58.

Westin Hughes trailed 4-3 when he was reversed and turned with a power half at 2:58. Wade Reimer went over in a double chicken wing in 53 seconds.

Michael Reis was pulled back for two backpoints before he was pinned in a chicken wing at 1:47.

Schools vote in favor of district format for football I COMMENTARY Andy Colbert

But, had they not proposed the plan, it never would have came to fruition. The reason for putting it up for vote were numerous complaints schools had about difficulties in scheduling, conference instability, travel, along with equity in competition.

On paper, a district format is the fairest way to go with geographic proximity to one another and relatively equal enrollment. But, that won’t always be the case.

Schools that don’t have a close proximity to teams their size will be forced to travel longer distances than they do know. And, even though teams will be classed by enrollment, there will be some huge mismatches, especially in the Chicago area.

Lost are long-standing conference rivalries. If you are 2A and your biggest league rival is 3A, the only way you could ever play is in the two allotted non-conference games, which have no bearing on the play-

offs.

The top four teams in the districts will qualify for the post season. It’s a fairly simple concept that has been used by a number of other states for years.

Locally, Oregon was one of the schools voting in favor of districts.

As the smallest school in the BNC, they have been at a competitive disadvantage in football.

Their chances of making the playoffs will increase. With the way the districts look to shake out, Oregon will also have the good fortune of being with seven other programs that have solid community support.

Not every school will be that fortunate. It’s the luck of the draw where you end up at. There will be some unfavorable districts in terms of travel, bad programs and competitive disparity.

At the moment, football districts are being highly debated in every corner of the state by fans, coaches, media, players, parents, officials and just about everyone with a connection to the sport.

Indeed, it is one the most monumental decisions ever within the IHSA framework, on par with the decision to go from one class in basketball to two in 1972.

There are far too many pros and cons to discuss. Let’s keep it simple and see what happens between now and 2021 when districts take effect.

Will some teams drop co-ops, add co-ops, go to 8-man, etc? Could we see beleaguered Chicago public league programs opt out of districts and play in their own conference without playoff consideration?

My high school time cut across two years prior to the playoffs and the first two years (1974 & 75) of them. What I remember is that conferences still actually meant something and there was pride in being a league champ. The playoffs were simply an added bonus.

But, those were simpler times.

Maybe what is going nowadays with all the consternation connected to high school football is a reflection upon society.

Nobody ever seems content with their lot in life. So, we constantly makes changes to appease society and things seemingly get worse.

Will districts be an improvement?

I guess it depends on how it affects your particular school or team.

Rather selfish to take that approach, but that’s where we’re at in today’s world of high school sports.

n a historical vote whose ramifications will be felt for years to come, member schools of the IHSA narrowly approved a district format for football.

The vote was 324 in favor and 307 against.

Beginning two years from now, teams will be no longer be affiliated with conferences. Rather, they will be placed geographically within 8-9 team districts of similar sized enrollment.

This only applies to football. All other sports remain the same within their conferences.

Already, shockwaves are being throughout Illinois, with many schools adamantly opposed to the concept of districts and the potential problems created by their facilitation.

Basically, half the schools agree with the proposal and the other half do not, with a small minority (69) offering no opinion. This issue is not going away any time soon and the IHSA offices will be bombarded with complaints from the no camp.

Much of the blame is being placed on the IHSA, but let’s be clear. It was not the IHSA’s intention to implement districts without a majority approval by its member schools.

“The judges had a hard time deciding on winners with so many styles of decorating,” said Tina Ketter, superintedent of recreation. “You can see everything from traditional to over the top ‘Clark Griswold’ type décor. Regardless of the decorating style, the park district encourages

everyone to drive through Oregon and check out the lights! This is a great family activity that is fee and so much fun.”

Holidays can be challenging to those who are grieving person.

For those who are grieving, painful feelings during the holidays are normal.

Rather than place unrealistic expectations on themselves to do things the way they always have, grievers should lower expectations for themselves.

Some suggestions for honoring lost loved ones might include: • Draw pictures or make cards of favorite holiday memories with the deceased.

• Create a special ornament to hang on the tree or doorway.

• Write a holiday letter to the deceased and place it in a special place either wrapped as a present under the tree or tied with a bow and placed next to their picture.

• Place a picture of the deceased at the dinner table with a candle so they are part of the holiday feast.

• Cook a favorite dish or dessert

SAFETY REMINDER

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White reminds motorists who are celebrating during the holiday season to drive safely by not driving impaired or distracted.

“Drunk and impaired driving causes death and injury on our roadways every year during the holidays,” White said. “Let’s keep the roads safe for our loved ones and others by driving sober and making sure we don’t drive distracted.”

In 2017, from Christmas Eve to Christmas Day, four of the 11 driving fatalities (36 percent) were alcohol-related in Illinois, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

In 2017, four of the six fatalities (66 percent) were alcohol-related from New Year’s Eve to New Year’s Day in Illinois, according to IDOT. In 2016, 29,528 DUI arrests were recorded by the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office.

Eighty-six percent of all drivers arrested for DUI are first-time offenders, according to White’s office.

White suggests that those drinking during celebrations take public transportation, a cab or a ride-sharing service or designate a sober driver.

White also reminds everyone to use safety belts and avoid driving while distracted, with a special emphasis on not texting while driving.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Dec. 18 Remal Walker, 28, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He appeared in court and was given a full cash bond of $1,338. He was released after posting bond pending a court appearance.

Karen Dille, 44, of Peru, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant.

She posted the $521 full cash bond and was released with no further court date.

Dec. 21 Deputies, the Rochelle Fire Department, and the Rochelle Ambulance responded at 6:35 a.m. to a two-vehicle roll over accident on Interstate 39 mile marker 99 northbound.

A northbound car driven by Conner M. Rylatt, 24, of Boulder, Colorado was attempting to pass a northbound semi tractor-trailer driven by Troy L. Hooks, 57, of Plainfield, Wisconsin.

The car went out of control and struck the trailer, causing the car to cross over to the southbound side and roll over into the west side ditch coming to a stop on its roof.

Rylatt refused medical attention.

Hooks was not injured.

Rylatt was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Deputies along with Byron Fire and EMS responded at 6:15 p.m. to the 6000 block of North Deer Path Lane in rural Byron for the report of a one-vehicle crash.

Their investigation indicated that a vehicle driven by Melissa Speers, 33, of Mt. Morris, was northbound on Deer Path Lane when it drove off of the roadway striking a parked pickup truck before then striking a tree and coming to rest.

Speers was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident, improper lane usage, and driving on the shoulder.

Speers was issued an I-bond with a court date of Jan. 16.

She transported to Rockford Memorial

Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Dec. 23 Billy Byvick, of Stillman Valley, was arrested for domestic battery and on an outstanding Lee County warrant after a domestic disturbance at 8449 Meadowlark Lane, Stillman Valley.

She was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she will be held until she can be brought before a judge.

Also arrested at this location was Christopher Byvick, of Stillman Valley, for violation of an order of protection.

He was also transported to the Ogle County Jail and will be held until he can be brought before a judge.

Illinois State Police assisted in the investigation.

OBITUARY DOROTHY I. SEURING Dorothy Irene Seuring, 100, of Baileyville, died on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2018, at Liberty Village.

She was born on Jan. 5, 1918, in Winslow, to Clarence and Phebe (Reck) Wales and graduated from Winslow High School in 1936.

She married Irvin Seuring on Aug. 10, 1946. He died April 15, 2017.

Dorothy tested cream at a local cheese factory and worked as a housekeeper.

She worked at Burgess Battery during World War II before marriage and then became a farm/house wife.

She and Irvin farmed in Florence Station before moving back to the home farm in Baileyville.

She was a member of the Florence

United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer for 25 years and as a Sunday school teacher.

Dorothy was active in her children’s school functions along with the parent teacher association.

She was also a 70-year member of Silver Creek Home Extension.

She enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing cards, gardening and canning, baking, cooking and in later years reading.

Surviving are her son, Rodney (Karen) Seuring, of Baileyville; daughter, Teresa (Chad) Hageman, of Caledonia; stepson, Gene (Patricia) Seuring, of Rockford; grandchild, Adam Hageman, of Chicago; step-grandchildren, Douglas (Susan) Seuring, of Carmel, Indiana, Michael (Jennifer) Seuring, of Chicago, Wendy (Jon) Ralston, of Denver, Colorado, Kathy Holtze, of Winfield; nine

step-great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Myrna Seuring.

Preceding her in death were son, Randall Seuring; husband, Irvin; step-grandson, Steven Seuring; brothers, Ralph and Robert Wales; sisters, Lois Meighan and Letha Leverton.

Services were held Dec. 19 with burial at Cranes Grove Cemetery, Baileyville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cranes Grove Cemetery Association, Florence United Methodist Church, or Stephenson County HCE (Home Extension).
