Restoration ‘down to the last few steps’ Final concrete work and sandblasting in next 10 days, weather-permitting

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The end is near for the most recent restoration of the Black Hawk Statue at Lowden State Park.

The 109-year-old, 48-foot-tall iconic concrete Indian has been under a protective wrap for the better part of the past two years.

For Roger Cain, member of the Black Hawk Art, Restoration & Development Committee, it’s a relief for the restoration to be coming to a close.

“When you look at the overall scope of the project,” Cain said. “We’re down to

the last few steps.”

After an earlier finish date of Dec. 1 came and passed, concerns were raised when local residents noticed Black Hawk still under wraps and surrounded by scaffolding. The work by contractor Quality Restorations Inc., of Wood Dale continues.

In the next 10 days, extra workers will be brought in and extra days will be worked in an effort to complete the restoration, Cain said. Concrete work is expected to be finished Dec. 17, and then sandblasting and removal of scaffolding will take place, weather-permitting.

Currently, excavating out of all the previously-impacted areas is done and 80 percent of it is filled back in with 1-2 inches in depth of surface, Cain said.

“I think it’s all going very smoothly,” Cain said. “And if not for the bad weather spell, it would’ve been done by now.”

“I believe the contractor has gone

above and beyond and has done a fantastic job. It’s something that we will get a lot of great years out of,” he said.

Jan Stilson, who is on the committee with Cain, is working on an unveiling ceremony, details of which will be revealed at a later date.

But on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. the Cork & Tap in Oregon will be hosting 88 Keys, the musical stylings of professional pianist Mary Pearson.

Oregon Together is presenting the event and tickets are $10 each, with only 100 seats available.

All proceeds will benefit the Black Hawk Statue Perpetual Maintenance Fund, which is being established to provide regular care for the statue after its renovations are completed.

Tickets are available for purchase at Cork & Tap, Merlin’s Flowers and Greenhouse and the Oregon Chamber of Commerce office.

Two vehicles were involved in an accident on Tuesday afternoon near the intersection of Fifth Street and Illinois 64 in Oregon, causing one of the vehicles to flip onto its roof.

At approximately 2 p.m. Oregon Police responded to the scene.

Steven T. Lindsey, 39, of Machesney Park, was driving a 2019 Ford van west on Washington Street (Illinois 64) when he collided with a 2011 Ford pickup truck driven by Clifford Thompson, 66, of Oregon, as he was turning onto Washington Street from North 5th Street, police said.

Lindsey was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and disobeying a traffic control device. He was transported to Swedish American Hospital by Oregon Ambulance and was released without treatment.

Village Board discusses food truck ordinance

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Mt. Morris Village Board discussed establishing an ordinance for food trucks on Tuesday night at its regularly scheduled meeting.

The village has no language on its books regarding laws for food trucks. At the last meeting, Josh Larson, a local owner of a darts gaming business named Dynasty LLC, approached the board with a presentation and the intention of bringing a food truck to town during events and on weekends. The village doesn’t have much history with food trucks.

“Relatively little,” Village President Dan Elsasser said. “Other than during Let Freedom Ring Festival where they have all kinds of vendors, very little. That’s why we have no language at all.”

The board discussed a possible ordinance that would legislate hours of operation and suitable places for the food trucks to park. The village attorney said that it is not required to have language for food trucks, but recommended different levels of action: “Do nothing, do a little or do a lot.”

Village Board Trustee Phil Labash advocated for the “do a little” course of action, taking factors like parking into account.

“My concern is, I think about a Wednesday or Friday night concert where if we do nothing, you can have food vendors that come to town and set up right in our premier parking areas,” Labash said. “We have a lot of elderly citizens that like to park close to the venue, and that’s always been a good thing.”

Village Board officials discussed an ordinance for food trucks at their regular meeting Tuesday as well as suitable hours of operation. As things stand now, all food trucks have in terms of requirements are a food license and a local business license with the village.

In other action, the board: •Voted unanimously to cancel its regularly-scheduled Village Board meeting that was scheduled to fall on Christmas Eve. The board, Village President, Village Clerk and Treasurer

will be excused with pay on Dec. 24.

• Mentioned during the food truck discussion that there are no current plans for the site of the old Penner Building, which was recently torn down.

“At this point, we’re not definite on what that is going to be turned into,” Elsasser said.

• Unanimously approved a motion to pay village employees a one-time gift for the holiday season. Full-time employees will receive $150 and part-time employees will receive $75.

Coats for Hope NFP to hold sorting day Dec. 14

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Coats for Hope NFP will hold its fifth annual sorting day on Saturday, Dec. 14 at Byron High School from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Collections of coats and monetary donations are still being taken until the end of the first week of 2020. This year, half of the coats and proceeds will be donated to the YWCA in Sterling and half will be donated to the Family Peace Center of Rockford.

Victoria Kuzlik, 15, and her father Robert established the not for profit organization aimed at collecting coats for victims of domestic violence in 2015 after being helped by HOPE of Ogle County and the YWCA in Sterling.

“The donations so far have been wonderful,” Victoria Kuzlik said.

“In terms of monetary donations, we’re still working to increase the amount. People don’t understand how much money can be put to good use for victims of domestic violence and abuse.”

Victoria hopes to hit a goal of 5,000 coats and $15,000 in monetary donations this year.

“In five years, a lot more people have become aware,” Victoria Kuzlik said. “And we’re slowly starting to spread awareness and get donations from even surrounding states outside of Illinois.”

“The timing of it, while yes it’s unfortunate that we’re going to have to wait until spring to finish it all, at least we’ll have a good chunk of the year that the community can still utilize the amenities,” Folk said.

Several sections of the walking trail at Oregon Park West will remain closed for the winter as weather has delayed construction of “Phase II” improvements at the park, Oregon Park District Executive Director Erin Folk said.

Phase II improvements include a batting cage, fully inclusive playground, expanded shelter and restrooms, accessibility improvements, new baggo courts, new volleyball courts, outdoor classroom and installation of a Toro court.

“It’s nice to have those amenities added in for our small community,” Folk said. “But that park is really kind of a regional destination just because of what facilities we have out there already.”

Folk estimates the construction is 50 or 60 percent completed, but did not give an expected finish date. Construction was originally scheduled to finish at the end of November. Some construction could be done this winter, but Folk says weather likely won’t allow it.

Those using the closed sections of the walking paths will be rerouted. Remaining work on the project includes asphalt laying, concrete pouring, installing a shelter and turf

restoration, “It’s all going to be weather-dependent,” Folk said. “That’s the downside of outdoor construction, you’re at the mercy of the weather.”

Folk is eager to get the project finished after two years of planning and work. Among the aspects Folk is most excited about is the Toro court, a unique multipurpose athletic court with integrated technology that will be the only one in the United States. Folk also touted larger changing facilities near the splash pad and more accessibility for people with disabilities.

“The playground that has been completed but not opened at this point is fully accessible,” Folk said.

“We have improved a lot of the walking paths so that they’re [Americans with Disabilities Act] accessible.

We have improved access points to other amenities out there to meet ADA requirements.”

All of the improvements being constructed align with the results of the community survey in 2018.

To complete the project, the district was awarded $400,000 from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources as part of the State’s FY 2019 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development program. This project was one of 89 local outdoor

Famous people have passed through Oregon Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society.

The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The following famous people lived, visited, or traveled through Ogle County.

Black Hawk probably crossed this area several times before he crossed the Mississippi and marched up the Rock River.

When they reached Dixon’s Ferry Mrs. Dixon invited the chief and his friends to dine with her. He continued north to Sycamore Creek located near what is now Stillman Valley which turned out to be the beginning of the Black Hawk War in 1832.

In 1833 William the son of Alexander Hamilton was in the Oregon area when Phelps arrived here looking for a suitable place to settle and find a suitable route from Galena to Chicago.

William Hamilton had a government contract to survey the Rock River Valley. If William hadn’t recommended the site Phelps claimed for his farm who knows, the city of Oregon that Phelps founded could have been in a different location.

Illinois Governor Ford from Oregon was our 8th governor from 1842-1846. He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in 1800, 18 years before Illinois was founded in 1818.

In 1835 he moved to a cabin on property owned by John Phelps, founder of Oregon. Two years later he moved to N. Third Street in Oregon.

In 1836 John Deere traveled from New England mostly by canal and the Great Lakes to Grand Detour. His family with their five children followed their 32-yearold redheaded blacksmith to Grand Detour the following year. He built and successfully demonstrated his first steel plow in 1837.

In 1843 Margaret Fuller and her friend, Sarah Clarke, visited the Rock River Valley July 1-6.

Margaret wanted to experience the area still known as the American Northwest, Chicago and Milwaukee and the countryside around them, and to visit her uncle William Fuller who lived in Oregon.

The Story Of Oregon reported an early rumor that Frank and Jesse James and fellow outlaws with their well-groomed and expensive horses stopped by the 1876 Ogle County Fair to race their horses against the locals and moved on to Northfield, Minnesota.

Lincoln spoke in Oregon Aug. 15, 1856 on the Campaign Trail for the Republican Presidential hopeful, John Fremont. Lincoln came to Polo the night before the meeting and was the guest of Senator Zenas Aplington .

In1898 Lorado Taft and ten other members founded the Eagle’s Nest Artist Colony on the bluff overlooking Rock River. He made this his summer home for 13 years.

Governor Lowden was much interested in farming.

In 1900 he purchased a large tract of land in Ogle County. He named it “Sinnissippi Farm,” the Indian word for “Rocky Waters. This was a fitting name as the Rock River flows by the estate.

In July of1932, Governor Franklin Roosevelt of New York gave a campaign speech for President of the United States from the back of his private rail car at the Oregon Depot.

depot. Governor Lowden was a Republican and Governor Roosevelt a Democrat. A photograph in the Oregon Newspaper shows Roosevelt addressing the crowd from the back of his car with Lowden standing at his side.

In 1964 Republican nominee for President of the United States, Barry Goldwater and his wife, were greeted by some 15,000 at the Oregon Fairgrounds. Ogle County Board member, Bill Spencer, at that time Ogle County Sheriff and his chief deputy Ed. Lang with help from the Mounted Patrol State Police served as security for Goldwater.

Local artist spreading message of hope across area SAUK VALLEY MEDIA news@saukvalley.com How do you promote peace? You start with an idea – and a trampoline.

That’s how Mark Stach’s “Peace of Art” project – building and installing large peace signs – got its start, and the Dixon man is spreading his message across the Sauk Valley.

The project’s latest location was, fittingly enough, Reagan Peace Park in downtown Dixon, at Second Street and Galena Avenue, where Stach, his daughter, Leah, and other volunteers were doing some art work last week.

His goal is simple: to create smiles by giving people some peace in their lives.

So far, he’s built eight of the pieces, bringing his peaceful easy feeling to Sterling, Rock Falls, Grand Detour and Dixon. He’d like to create 13 of the works before the year’s end; his next installation, coming soon, will be in Oregon.

But he doesn’t want to stop there.

He’d like to spread his message to other communities – maybe even around the world.

And all it took was a trampoline to get his idea off the ground.

“I got the idea when I was taking apart my kids’ old trampoline,” he said.

“I used the frame for the first large peace sign at my house.” After seeing Doug Mossholder’s large sign on Dixon’s hydroelectric dam, it inspired Stach to take his project on the road.

“All are on private property except this one. Dixon gave me permission since it’s Peace Park.”

Each peace sign costs about $125, and Stach welcomes others to join him on his mission. He has a GoFundMe page – search for The Peace Of Art Project – where people can donate to help with his peace movement. So far, he’s raised about $150 of his $1,000 goal. People also can find out more about the project at youtu.be/E_ATkRapDDc. He hopes to carry on his tradition for years.

The department is getting a $300,000, no-interest loan from the State Fire Marshal and Illinois Finance Authority’s fire truck and ambulance revolving loan program.

The department already has one tender truck that carries 2,000 gallons, but only has a few years of service remaining, Fire Chief Michael Knoup said.

“Replacing aged equipment is a high priority, and this will be a great addition,” Knoup said.

The new truck, from Toyne Inc. of Breda, Iowa,

will hold 3,500 gallons. It will be equipped to function as an engine with a 1,500 gallon-a-minute pump, and as a secondary engine if needed, Knoup said.

It’s the first time the department has applied

for the loan, which was given as part of more than $9.3 million in no- or low-interest loans issued to emergency responders.

Under the program, fire departments, protection districts and township departments could apply for up to $350,000 in 20-year loans to buy fire or brush trucks.

Oregon’s will be repaid with existing tax revenue; no taxes will be raised.

“Fire departments throughout Illinois face financial stressors that can make it difficult to properly equip and train their firefighters,” State Fire Marshal Matt Perez said in a news release.

“This new equipment will help them serve their communities in a safer, more efficient and effective way.”

Rescue workers look for missing boaters, closure First responders are continuing to search the Rock River

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com When Oregon firefighters go to put out a fire, they don’t leave until the job is done.

That goes for recovery efforts, too, which is why they’re still “on the job,” looking for the bodies of two fishermen who went missing after their boat capsized on the Rock River on Nov. 20.

Frustration is taking a toll on the department, but Chief Michael Knoup and Capt. Dustin Champlain aren’t giving up.

“I think everyone here has that burden,” Champlain said. “I don’t want to say we feel responsible, because the accident wasn’t caused by us. But it’s ultimately our responsibility to get them out of the river at some point.”

The department is surveying the river with sonar and boats when the weather and available personnel make it possible. A search-and-rescue team from Tampico with top-level sonar equipment returned to the area last Wednesday to search for the bodies as well, after first being dispatched when the men went missing.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said that no scanning has been done in the past few days due to weather.

Crews were out most of last week.

When the search began, the Oregon Fire Department became the hub of a full-scale search-and-rescue operation. Twelve area fire departments responded with resources, including firefighters and boats.

“It was a little nerve-racking at first,” he said. “We started as a small event and found out we actually had victims. It escalated quickly, that first few minutes was trying to process everything and move.”

Within 10 minutes, the Sheriff’s Office had a command vehicle on site. Champlain worked the operation from there and it made for a calm, collected experience despite the challenges of coordinating all the departments participating.

Champlain was up 60 hours straight before the initial search was finished.

The weather made the search difficult, and has continued to complicate recovery efforts. Cold temperatures, high water levels and a swift current put the operation on the brink of being too dangerous.

“I don’t think people understand how fast that current is,” Champlain said. “You look at it from the

bridge on land and say, ‘Yeah, the water is moving.’ But really, underneath, the water is really moving at 7 knots. We did have a diver go in at one point, and they say their mask can rip off at 3 knots, potentially.”

The scale of the Nov. 20 search was the largest the Oregon Fire Department has seen in the past 4 or 5 years, Knoup said. The last time he worked something comparable was a chemical plant fire in Seward in June 2013.

The Rapid Response Search and Rescue Unit 19, based in Tampico has been helping with the search.

It’s funded by Christian Aid Ministries, a national Amish-Mennonite nonprofit organization.

The unit was dispatched originally by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and its members were asked to return by VanVickle.

Fewer than 10 organizations nationwide have the level of equipment that this unit has, team member and state coordinator Ralph Kropf said. They have a command trailer, a sonar-equipped boat and a remote-operated vehicle that can be deployed underwater.

Both sonar and the ROV were used Nov. 21, when the body of one of the men was located underwater about a mile south of the dam, but the swift water prevented the ROV and divers from recovering it before it moved to an unknown location.

The sonar equipment, which uses ultrasound technology, had 4 miles of Rock River bottom totally scanned as of Wednesday, Kropf said.

“So far, we’ve found nothing but logs,” he said.

“This week a lady stopped, all frantically and said, ‘I seen one of them in the water.’ So, we went down to that point along Route 2 and got the binoculars out and it was a log. But, any time we get any type of credible information, we’re investigating and continuing on.”

While official acknowledgment of the identities of the fishermen can’t be confirmed until the bodies are found, the two missing men are believed to be Kent Dearborn Jr., 33, of Polo, and James Swift, 64, of Forreston.

Information from their family and friends on social media show sweatshirts and T-shirts for sale that say: “Last Cast 11-20-19” with a photo of two men fishing from a boat and the inscription “In Loving Memory Bud & Jamie” on the back.

At a news conference Nov. 22, VanVickle said the names will not be released officially until the bodies are found.

Until then, Knoup, Champlain, Kropf and others will continue to work until the bodies are recovered and peace can be brought to the families.

Samir’s body was found two hours later, nearly 30 feet from where he was last seen struggling.

They can also help build a bond as we read in order to bake or cook something together with our children and grandchildren.

The librarians at your local public library would be happy to suggest books based on your child’s interests. They can also tell you the most popular books for your children’s ages.

Many times, classroom teachers can offer suggestions as well.

Speaking of libraries, if you don’t already have

a library card, you might want to stop in your local library to see about getting one. That can be a gift for the whole family.

We do want our children and grandchildren to have access to all kinds of reading materials. We also want to encourage them to read. Positive attitudes and motivation for reading are also basic needs if we want them to be lifelong readers who can and do read.

We can show that reading is important by including reading in our gift giving. If we search for materials that match their interests, we increase the chance that they will want to read.

We can spend time reading to and with them as well which will also increase motivation.

Reading is a necessary skill in the world in which we live. Information comes at us continually from all sources. Some of it is in print that we must be able to read and understand.

Being able to read can and will make a difference for our children and grandchildren in their lives both in and out of school now and in the future.

We should do anything we can do to help them value the gift of reading.

ast month’s columns addressed some of the ways our children and grandchildren might differ in relation to reading interests, places to read, and in motivation.

In January this column will explore various reading difficulties and possible ways to support struggling readers.

For this month, we will look at a basic need for all ages and all readers.

Access to books, or reading materials, is a basic need if we are going to develop lifelong readers who enjoy reading.

What if we consider access to books when we buy gifts for our children and grandchildren during the holidays and for birthdays?

First, we might want to expand our definition of “books”. Let’s think in broader terms of access to reading materials. That includes many options for even the most reluctant readers.

Consider magazines, almanacs, catalogues, or blogs and websites. We can also consider the possibilities of e-readers and electronic books.

Within that list there are several potential ideas for gift giving.

SPORTS Hawk grapplers wrestle on their home mat

BY RANDY HOLLAND Correspondent The Hawk wrestlers hosted a triangular meet at the Blackhawk Center on Dec. 3, losing to 15th ranked Dixon 57-21 and defeating Morrison 45-30.

Dixon was just too strong throughout their lineup for the young Hawks.

Dixon jumped out to a 30-0 lead with a forfeit at 170, and four straight pins. Wayde Reimer went to his back in a half nelson at 3:04 in the 182 pound match.

Adam Glendenning was pinned in a cradle at 1:20. Jonathon Alaniz was reversed to his back at the start of the third period. Evan Flaharty was driven down in a half nelson at 5:04.

Lane Halvorson broke the streak with a duck under takedown into a half nelson in 40 seconds into the 106 pound match. At 113, Edwin Estrada scored first on a hard fought escape but went down 3-1.

At 120 pounds, Zac Cox was taken down to his back in a half nelson at 2:43. Elizza Easley was taken down and pinned in a bow and arrow in 25 seconds.

Oregon took the next two matches. Andrew Herbst took a chicken wing out front at 1:03. Braydon Altherr worked a power half into a half nelson at 3:36.

Gabe Eckerd was pinned in a scrape at 3:30. Dixon got their final points when Sebastian Cardenas was pinned in a half nelson at the second period buzzer.

The Hawks finished with a 12-5 decision at 160. Jokiah Sewell scored four takedowns and a three point cradle in the win.

The Morrison match started with a high crotch to the back in 27 seconds by Reimer and Oregon extended the lead when Glendenning came back from a 7-0 deficit and pinned on a takedown in a half nelson at 5:40. Alaniz trailed 12-4 when he was pinned in a cradle at 2:46.

The Mustangs tied the score when Flaharty was taken down and pinned in a headlock in 59 seconds.

Halvorson took a forfeit and Estrada extended the lead to 12 when worked a half nelson at 4:47.

Cox took a forfeit at 120 and Easley had a nice shot, but was countered to her back at 1:26. Seth Stevens took a forfeit at 132.

Against tenth ranked Ryan Kennedy at 138, Herbst rode out the third period to hold on for a 5-0 win.

Eckerd was pinned in a half nelson in 27 seconds and Cardenas was on his back in a cradle in the second before he was pinned in a high half nelson at 3:02 in the 152 pound match.160 was a double forfeit and Sewell took a forfeit at 170 to finish the meet.

In JV action, Stevens had three first period pins. Jared Glendenning, Ethan George, and Grant Stender also pinned in the first. All victims of the half nelson, Miguel Vasquez, Elizabeth Ruter, and Josh Batt each lost two matches by falls.

At home again on Dec. 7, Oregon went down 45-28 to tenth ranked Rock Falls and lost a 40-39 squeaker to honorable mention Sandwich.

Oregon was a little sluggish against the Rockets, but cranked it up against the Indians, the meet decided by a forfeit in the last match.

Sandwich defeated Rock Falls 46-30 in their dual.

The meet started with Eckerd on the mat at 152. He was reversed to his back and pinned at 4:33. Sewell scored three takedowns to defeat seventh ranked Izaih James 7-1. Ore-

gon had to forfeit 170.

At 182, Reimer was reversed to his back in a half nelson at 2:21. With a turk for three points in the third, Adam Glendenning took a 12-7 win at 195 pounds.

At 220, Alaniz had two sets of backpoints in a 12-2 major decision.

At 285, Vasquez went over in a half nelson at 3:04.

Stender swam with the half nelson in 38 seconds in the 106 pound match. At 113, Estrada was pinned in a reverse half nelson midway through the second.

Jacob Milliman had a tilt for two points in the first period but could not escape in the third and he went down 5-4. That was the last win on the mat for the Rockets.

Oregon had to forfeit 126. At 132, Herbst hit a duck under for a takedown to the back in 42 seconds.

Jared Glendenning took a forfeit at 138 and the Hawks forfeited 145 to end the meet.

Against Sandwich, Sewell went up to 170 to meet tenth ranked Jackson Murphy. He came from behind with a reverse a stalling point in the third

to take a 4-2 decision.

Reimer took a forfeit. Adam Glendenning managed just one penalty point in a 14-1 major decision loss.

At 220, Alaniz led 7-2 when he was pinned in a butcher at 4:30.

That gave the Indians their first lead and they extended it to 16-9 when Vasquez was thrown and pinned at 2:41. Stender closed the gap to one when he ran a chicken wing at 3:08. Estrada put Oregon back on top when he caught a half nelson at 3:47. Milliman took a forfeit and the Hawks forfeited 126.

Herbst scored a takedown in a cradle for a pin at 2:58. Jared Glendenning got roughed up in the 138 pound match, turned with a half over the front and pinned at 1:07. A forfeit at 145 left the Hawks down by a point but Eckerd came through with a pin at 152, hitting a takedown in a half nelson and reversing it for the fall at 3:19.

Unfortunately, Sandwich had one more wrestler and Oregon had to forfeit 160 and the Hawks came up one point short.

Erie-Prophetstown was led by Allison Croegaert’s 790. Jenna Gibson rolled a 740, Sydney Melton had a 639, Naudia Riteman had a 637, and Berkley Eggers had a 617.

In the boys’ tournament, Rockford Christian came away with the team win with a pinfall of 5,967, with Zach Joiner (1,381) taking first individually and Tyler Matthews (1,279) taking third.

The Dukes had a pinfall of 5,665 to take fifth overall, beating the host Hawks by 44 as Oregon took sixth.

Dixon’s Tyler Yoccum had a 1,206 series that included a 269 fourth game.

“Everything felt really fluid. It felt really nice to just go throw the

ball and not to worry about the end results,” he said. “I’m pretty proud with what we did. We got a little over 5,700, so that’s our goal. Everyone did as best they could.”

The Dukes also got a 1,186 from Brennan Erb, a 1,093 from Jacob Wickert, and a 996 from Austin Portner.

Dixon nearly had the highlight of the day from Trevor White, who rolled strikes on his first nine frames of the fourth game before opening the tenth with a 9.

“I didn’t really put much effort into my ball,” he said. “Basically I just was swinging my arm and it was coming off right. Got my first nine and then left one pin with my first ball of the 10th. My legs were jelly. It was a lot of stress, because I’ve never been anywhere close to that.”

His 279 in that game helped him to a 1,184 series.

In the fifth game, two bowlers were perfect through six frames, as Erie-Prophetstown’s Lucca Sweetser and Oregon’s Isaac Kaltenbrun kept knocking down strike after strike.

Kaltenbrun left two pins standing with his first ball of the seventh frame, and a few seconds later, Sweetser left a pin up with his first ball of the seventh.

“It just felt good. I was in the zone,” Sweetser said.

The Oregon girls bowlers finished second at their home invitational at Plum Hollow on Dec. 7, and Plum Hollow’s usual residents took third.

The Hawks rolled a 5,139 as a team, while the Dixon Duchesses had a total pinfall of 4,957. Sycamore won the event with a pinfall of 5,687 as the Spartans’ Megan Kolberg was the individual winner with a 1,400 and Alexis Munch was fourth with a 1,131.

Oregon’s Rebbeca Meyers was second with a 1,223.

“I struggled in the fourth game and the fifth game a lot, but came back up,” she said. “The lanes got really dry in the spot I was throwing, so I had to move and switch balls a lot.”

The Hawks’ Sammantha Meyers took fifth overall with a series of 1,117. She turned things on in the fourth game, with strikes in frames four, five, six and seven.

“I was just speeding up my ball, speeding up my feet to hit my mark and knock all the pins down,” she said.

Sterling’s Zoey Paone was sixth overall with a six-game score of 1,114. “[Lane conditions] were tough, everything was moving really quick and the lanes were breaking down super fast, so that was tough,” Paone said. “I didn’t move too much. I switched balls a couple times. I just had to evaluate if that was the right decision.”

Paone had spares on each of her first four frames in the fifth game, followed that up with a strike, then added another spare. In the sixth game, she opened with a strike before rolling four spares in a row.

“I was really happy with today, and I think everything went really well,” Paone said. “I was really consistent all day. My lowest game was a 166, and that was the only inconsistent thing I had.”

Dixon was led by Tianna Bryson’s 1,083 and Riley Kavanaugh’s 1,042, which included a 212 in the first game.

“My first shot was really good and my form all day [was good], so what was working all day was the first shot,” Kavanaugh said.

The first shot was especially on for Kavanaugh in the sixth game, as she started off with three straight stikes before a nine in the fourth and fifth frames. She rolled a 193 in that game.

“I switched to a new ball, so that helped a lot, and I was shooting a

Meanwhile, Kaltenbrun followed up his fifth game by throwing strikes in four of the first five frames of the sixth.

“I started throwing the ball better, got my hand in a better position, started getting it out,” he said.

“It was pretty good other than a few spares that I missed,” Kaltenbrun said. “Those hurt me. I had a hard time adapting [to the lanes] in the fourth game, but after that, it was pretty good.”

Oregon’s 5,621 as a team included a 1,170 from Kyle Strite, a 1,094 from Charlie Bachman, a 1,082 from Jacob Smith, a four-game score of 756 from Eddie Buttens, and games of 117 from Nico Giuffre and 145 from Jacob Davis.

As a team, the Panthers were 11th with a pinfall of 4,256.

Jaron Gibson had a 955, Michael Miner added an 876, Jacob Finley had a 756 and, in three games each, James Pursley rolled a 316 and Austin Burger-Owens a 396.

Sterling finished eighth overall with a pinfall of 5,213. Carter Schlegel had a six-game score of 1,147.

Adan Ramirez rolled a 1,049, capping his day off with a 207 in the final game.

“I knew it was my last game, so I just wanted to leave it all out there,” Ramirez said. “I just bowled harder that I did the rest.”

Also for the Golden Warriors, Andrew Doughty had a 1,019 series, and Cabot McLaughlin had a 1,007.

In five games, Jordan Glazier rolled an 843, and John Oelrichs rolled a 148 in one game.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Girls basketball Newman 53, Oregon 49: The Comets connected on nine 3-pointers on their way to a home nonconference win against the Hawks.

Alejandra Padilla paced Newman with 18 points, Josie Rank had 16, and Jordan Morthland added 11. That trio dropped in a combined eight 3s.

Jenae Bothe finished with 16 points, and Olivia Lambrigtsen added 12 for Oregon, which outscored Newman 17-6 as a fourth-quarter rally came up short.

Forreston 49, Polo 30: Mallory Patterson scored 16 points and Lindee Poper added seven for the Marcos in a home loss to the Cardinals. Alexus Houston scored 20 points for Forreston.

Hawks looking pretty good in early season games

I

s it too early for Oregon Hawk fans to book a motel room for IHSA boys state basketball tournament in March?

With the way the team is playing, it is not too outlandish to think the Hawks could be one of the final four teams in 2A. It also not too outlandish to think they could be eliminated in the regionals, as were a talented senior-laden Oregon team from four years ago.

One thing is apparent. In this area, there is not that one powerhouse 2A team. Even with Rock Falls dropping down from 3A and Winnebago doing its usual reload, there isn’t anyone around here the Hawks can’t beat.

That also includes Sterling Newman, with the area’s top player in 6-foot-8 Devon House.

The best teams in 2A are primarily from Chicago and southern Illinois. The tough teams will be beating each other up in the post season, with someone from northern Illinois maybe headed to Peoria without much of a serious challenge.

The IHSA will release assignments after Dec. 15 and it is possible the better Chicago teams would be in another super-sectional, though Chicago Corliss was placed in the DeKalb super-sectional the last couple years.

Winnebago handled Corliss in 2018, but Corliss put a severe beating on Bureau Valley last year.

When comparing Bureau Valley last year and Oregon this year, the Hawks are certainly good enough to make a super-sectional final.

If you get that far, anything is possible. Besides

favorable draws, it also comes down to good fortune.

Two years ago at the Polo regional, Eastland missed a last-second shot that would have eliminated top seed Newman. Newman rebounded from that scare to make the state finals.

If the Eastland shot goes in, Newman goes home after its first game of the regional. That is how tenuous basketball can be.

I’m sure people from Polo would have been glad to see Eastland in the finals instead of Newman, who really got their act together by then.

Headed into key conference games the second weekend in January against Rockford Lutheran and ‘Bago, Oregon could be undefeated. A lot depends on how the team fares at the Forreston tourney, a place they have faltered in the past.

Big wins have already come against Aquin, Rockford Christian and Fulton. Combine that with a weak non-conference slate, and prospects are high for an impressive-looking record.

The non-conference scheduling was an out-

growth of the getting beat up in BNC and desire to tone down the competition a bit with smaller schools, especially in the lean years. It is does the pad the resume and makes a team appealing to A.P. voters, of which two gave Oregon top 10 votes in the first 2A poll of the year.

As coach Quinn Virgil told me in the preseason, this would be an exciting team to watch. I had my concerns after seeing them have bad first halves against South Beloit and Christian Life, two mediocre squads.

There were numerous turnovers and fundamental breakdowns. Yes, it was early in the season, but don’t these kids play all summer?

No doubt, the potential is there to be very good.

And, things did turn out for the better.

Against RC, everyone got into the act, not just Trey Woolsey. That’s what the Hawks need to be successful and the supporting cast is more than capable.

With its athleticism and quickness, Oregon is playing shut-down defense. That’s what probably will be most exciting about watching them play.

The next home game isn’t until Jan. 3 (Morrison), but the Forreston Tournament from Dec. 14-20 is a chance to see genuine small-school basketball with a smorgasbord of locals from 1A and 2A. Come on out and see what Oregon has to offer.

It may be awhile before there is anywhere close to this talent level in the school.

The Leaf River Soaring Eagles 4-H Club’s new 4-H year is underway.

In September the club elected the following new officers for the year, Kaden Lingbeck, president; Annie Timmer, vice president; Xana Armbruster, secretary; Bryan Immel, treasurer; Abigail Wehler, reporter; Laci Williams, photographer; Lizzie Armbruster, historian; Logan Armbruster, Dylon Timmer, David Wehler and Alex Williams, recreation leaders; and Kiera Armbruster, Lydia Sherburne and Ashley Williams, sentinels.

Members also toured the Lingbeck farm to compare corn fields’ production, planted at different times. They also held a new year kick-off party at the Meyers farm.

Members also put up a bulletin board at Bertolet Memorial Library during National 4-H Week, Oct. 6-12.

The committee was led by Chairman Kaden Lingbeck, and the theme was “4-H Through the Decades,” and included pictures of each decade since 1910. Club members also visited Walnut Acres Nursing Home Oct. 9 in Freeport, and played bingo with the residents as a joint service and promotional project.

The club meets at 6:30 p.m. every second Monday of the month in the upper level at River Valley Complex, 605 Main St.

OBITUARIES Barbara Lee Ludewig, 65, of Lake Carroll, died Dec. 2, 2019 surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer at Manor Court, Freeport.

Barbara was born Feb. 27, 1954 in Freeport, the daughter of Harvey and Opal (Remmers) Wilhelms Sr. Barb married Jerry L. Ludewig on Sept. 9, 1972 in Forreston. She was a 1972 graduate of Freeport High school.

She worked for Economy Insurance Company, as a Lifeguard for YWCA, Pathwork Corner in Forreston, and as a teacher in West Carroll and Savanna.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Shannon.

Barb enjoyed quilting, sewing, spending time in her garden and planting flowers. Barb loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She took great pleasure in following their sporting events.

GRETCHEN LEE WARMOLTS Gretchen Lee Warmolts, 72, of Oregon, passed after Succumbing to chronic illness on Nov. 24, 2019.

Gretchen was born April 19, 1947. She is survived by her loving daughter, Laurrel Hayes of Rochelle, her son, Howard Hayes of Dixon, and her brother, Kim and wife Peggy of Florida. She had three grandchildren, Tylor, Natasha, and Olivia.

She loved nature, all animals, and danced to her own drummer. She will be loved and missed!

Also surviving are many beloved extended family members including, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services were Saturday, Dec. 7 at Bethel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Jones officiating. Visitation was Friday, Dec. 6 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston.

Burial was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ported to the Ogle County Jail where he is held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 3 At 3:28 p.m. the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office, Byron Fire Department and a Byron ambulance responded to a one vehicle accident in front of 428 E. Illinois 72.

A silver Toyota was eastbound on Illinois 72 when it left the north side of the road and struck an embankment before traveling into a field and coming to a stop.

The driver of the vehicle, Barbara A. Kinner, 81, of Oregon, was transported to Mercy Health Hospital by the Byron Ambulance with minor injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

Dec. 9 Jesse Hetrick, age 40, of Dixon, was arrested for driving while license revoked and a valid Livingston County failure to appear warrant for a DUI. Hetrick was additionally issued a citation for operating an uninsured vehicle. He was stopped at approximately 10:40 a.m. in the 6400 block of South Illinois 2. Hetrick was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 6 Tyleek Croft, age 24, of Beloit for was arrested for driving while license suspended. Croft was arrested by deputies on Illinois 251 near Davis Junction after being stopped for speeding. Croft was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

Area high school students named state scholars The Illinois Student Assistance Commission, which provides information and financial assistance to college-bound students, has released its list of the 2020-21 State Scholars.

Honored students are in the top 10% of high school seniors across the state, based on a combination of their ACT or SAT test scores and sixth semester class rank.

In all, more than 17,500 students from 726 schools achieved recognition this year. More than 21,000 last year, but fewer schools were involved in submitting information to the commission, ISAC representative Lynne Baker said.

Honorees are announced based on the year they will begin their post-secondary education, not on the year they graduate from high school.

The honor comes with a congratulatory letter from ISAC, a certificate of achievement, and a downloadable digital Illinois State Scholar badge that can be displayed on students’ online profiles and social media platforms to share with prospective col-

leges and employers.

Schools that submitted information to the ISAC the earliest received the status of their students earlier than other schools, Baker said.
