Commission votes 4-3 to recommend city reject zoning for cannabis dispensary Oregon City Council has the final say

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com The Oregon Plan Commission voted 4-3 to recommend the city council not establish a Municipal Cannabis Zoning classification that could clear the way for an adult recreational dispensary in town.

The commission voted on the issue following a 30-minute public hearing that included comments from four people, including the two local attorneys—Brandi Chudoba and Kristin Folk—who plan to apply for a license to sell cannabis for adult recreational use.

“It’s coming somewhere. We have read the law. We understand the regulations and how they work,” Chudoba said. “We have spent a lot of time on this.”

Folk, who has a law office in Oregon, said the dispensary would be good for the local economy.

“It’s a strict business. It would be good for local economy, and it is highly regulated,” she said.

Commission member Roger Cain asked how much revenue the owners expected to make through sales.

Chudoba said she had been given an estimate of $10-12 million in gross revenue a year, but quickly said that estimate likely was high.

“Honestly, I do not know if we would do that,” she said. “This being a small town, we think people would travel here, but we do not know if it would be that much.”

Folk said dispensaries must meet strict criteria for security, would be highly regulated, and could sell only cannabis grown in Illinois.

“This is going to be more regulated than some prescription drugs are,” added Chudoba.

A state law takes passed by the Illinois General Assembly this summer will allow Illinoisans who are 21 or older to legally possess 30 grams (about one ounce) of cannabis for recreational use.

Medical marijuana dispensaries will be the only legal sellers of marijuana for recreational use at first, but by mid2020, the state is expected grant additional licenses.

On Sept. 10, the council authorized city attorney Paul Chadwick to draw up

ordinances that would allow retail dispensaries, craft growers, infusers, and transporters.

Mayor Ken Williams asked commissioners in July to research the new law and get input from constituents about it in preparation to put city ordinances in place before the new law takes effect.

A dispensary is a business that acquires cannabis from a cultivation center, craft grower, processing organization, or another dispensary to sell cannabis, cannabis-infused products, cannabis seeds, paraphernalia or related supplies to purchasers or to qualified registered medical cannabis patients and caregivers.

Folk and Chudoba said a family member living in Rockford also would be a partner in the business. The process to get a license is complicated, and only three dispensary licenses will be allowed in northwest Illinois, she said.

“We have no idea if we will get a license, but we hope we do,” Folk said.

She said the dispensary would not sell medical marijuana.

Oregon resident, the Rev. Kale Aluli, spoke strongly against the dispensary.

“This is a moral issue. This is about the sweet smell of money. Congratulations, you will be millionaires,” said Aluli, directing his comments to Folk and Chudoba. “A failure to not view this as a moral issue would have longterm effects to our children.”

He said there are “zero quality clinical studies” that prove cannabis helps with diseases like anxiety and depression.

Chudoba said establishing the dispensary in Oregon would cost an estimated $250,000.

“We’re trying to make it as local as we can. Both of us have children, and I do think regulation helps. The only way someone can buy it now is on the black market. If you want to draw a morality issue, then you need to look at alcohol,” she said.

Cain said that he did not want the meeting to turn into a debate on morality and that he still had numerous questions and concerns about how dispensaries would work, especially in smaller communities.

“There’s a lot yet to be discussed. I think we should give it a year,” he said suggesting the commission vote to look at the request again in 12 months.

Oregon City Commissioner Melanie Cozzi said she is in favor of the dispensary. “I am for getting a cannabis business here. It would provide more revenue for the city.”

Plan Commission Member Rick Ryland said law enforcement officials he had spoken with were against a dispensary in Oregon because of safety concerns.

“I don’t think we should jump on the bandwagon. We need more information,” he said. “We know the effects of this [cannabis] and what it has done to our nation.”

“I think this will be like alcohol was,” said Plan Commission Chairman Mark Herman. “Some areas are still ‘dry’.

Saying ‘never’ is not realistic. It is being regulated in a safe way.”

Cain, Ryland, and commission members Jeff Hallock and Randy Cropp, voted to recommend to the city council that the new zoning classification be rejected. Herman, Kurt Wilson and Karly Spell voted against that motion.

“Remember that the city council can choose to accept or reject our recommendation,” Herman said.

The next Oregon City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 26.

The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. in the council’s chambers at the Oregon City Hall.

In September, Williams said the three percent sales tax on cannabis-related businesses would bring an estimated $30,000 per year into city coffers.

The Ogle County Board voted 17-5 on Sept. 17 to impose a 3.75 percent sales tax on recreational cannabis sold in unincorporated areas of the county and a three percent tax on sales made in municipalities.

State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said the board could pass the tax and still choose not to allow cannabis-related businesses in unincorporated areas of the county.

Approval of the measure makes it possible for the county to collect taxes from the businesses in the municipalities that do allow them.

Emergency declaration allows for more supply

High demand and low supply caused the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to grant Illinois a regional emergency declaration that allows more suppliers to transport propane, natural gas and heating oil throughout the state.

Six other states have received the declaration: Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Some Midwest grain elevators have stopped corn delivery and floor storage because of low propane supplies. Locally, that doesn’t seem to be happening yet.

“For us, it’s not that bad yet,” said Scott Roberts, a merchandiser at Bocker Ruff LLC grain terminal in Polo. “Our supplier has come through every time.

A Midwest propane shortage that has some farmers struggling to heat homes and barns and dry extremely wet grains this harvest season has yet to have much of an impact on this area.

Bitter cold has come early this season, leaving LP users scrambling all at once to get some. Many farmers are also using more of the propane that fuels the grain-drying process. The historically wet spring delayed the start of the growing season and has extended harvests statewide.

Whereas farmers are usually finished with harvest before residential use begins, all areas of propane demand are converging.

“Getting propane hasn’t been much of an issue here,” Ogle County Farm Bureau Manager Ron Kern said on Tuesday. “This is more of a transport problem than an actual propane shortage. There might be a few people who didn’t have propane contracts, so it could be a problem for them, but I haven’t heard much talk about it.”

Loren Wolf, who grows corn south of Dixon, said the wet crops have him using twice as much propane than he normally would during harvest season. He is entering the homestretch in gathering his corn and the shortage hasn’t impacted his work.

“I know some suppliers have been strangled, but I have Ag View FS in Princeton, and they’ve been doing a bang-up job,” Wolf said. “We’re looking to finish up next week and they assured me there would be enough

normally getting their crops in 2 to 4 weeks ahead of us, and now we’re all harvesting at once,” Roberts said.

Farmers in some parts of the state have been warned of propane rationing, but it hasn’t come to fruition in this area.

Area propane dealers say they have yet to see their supplies disrupted.

“We haven’t had any issues in getting it in, and we’ve had plenty on hand for everyone coming in for it,” said Leah Nelson, a manager at Tractor Supply in Dixon.

Propane prices were up about 20% in 2017, but have been in check since. The week of Nov. 11, residential propane in Illinois was at $1.62 a gallon, excluding taxes. That was up from $1.43 the previous week, but only 1 cent higher than the week of Nov. 11, 2018.

The demand has remained relatively flat nationwide as U.S. production has increased with the nation’s energy infrastructure boom.

The U.S. is now the world’s top propane exporter, sending more than half of its supply overseas.

Board member speaks out against dispensaries

BY LINDSEY SALVATELLI Correspondent An Ogle County Board member gave a passionate speech Tuesday saying he could not support the establishment of an adult use marijuana dispensary in Ogle County because of a personal tragedy.

Rick Fritz, a District 1 Board member from Monroe Center, deviated from the night’s agenda to deliver a passionate speech about the social impact of allowing a dispensary into the county.

He said allowing recreational marijuana to be sold to adults has been promoted to communities as a tax revenue source, but, he said,

that comes at a cost.

He told the board that he watched as his two grandsons went from engaged boys with aspirations to withdrawn teenagers with mood swings once they began using marijuana.

One of the boys was able to overcome his substance abuse and is now on the “straight and narrow path.” The other boy, he said with his voice shaking, committed suicide on Oct. 30.

“In my humble opinion, I’ve tried to objectively carry on my responsibility to do what is best for the citizens of Ogle County,” Fritz said.

He said he is in favor of allowing new businesses to open in Ogle

County, but he could not justify how allowing a dispensary business into the county would benefit its citizens.

If Ogle County opts out of allowing marijuana businesses during its next meeting, it won’t make much of a difference because it will be available in neighboring county, Fritz said. And it’s naive to think a law prohibiting those under the age of 21 from using recreational marijuana will stop them from using the drug.

He said he thinks more state and city resources should be put toward understanding why people are drawn to marijuana to escape reality.

“I hear and read from proponents of legalizing marijuana that it’s a

victimless activity, that it affects no one except those who are smoking.

Nothing could be further from the truth,” Fritz said.

Hot Wheels experience ‘huge’ for German Valley man

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@saukvalley.com Steve Zettle couldn’t quite make it two-for-two showing off his 1965 Pontiac GTO at car shows, but he was particularly find of his experience at the national competition of the 2019 Hot Wheels Legends Tour.

The 3-day event in Las Vegas, Nevada concluded Nov. 8, and featured Zettle’s ride along with 16 other custom or restored vehicles throughout the United States.

“It’s a huge show, and I didn’t realize how big it was,” he said.

“Unbelievably huge. It was a lot of footwork. You can’t replace the experience.”

Zettle advanced out of the Chicago tour show in July, and had his maroon, two-door, high-riding car critiqued by Hot Wheels judges, as well as a few celebrity car enthusiasts.

The competition was friendly, Zettle said, and he enjoyed the feedback he received from celebrity judges, which included comedians Adam Corrola and Jay Leno, and Richard Rawlings from the nationally renown Gas Monkey Garage in Dallas, Texas.

Rawlings was the first celebrity to come by, and told Zettle that the proportions of his car were “perfect.” Leno, who also is a vintage car enthusiast, had a similar opinion.

“He said as far as period-correct goes, that’s about as close as you can get,” Zettle said. “That made me feel good coming from Jay.”

He hoped to have his as a 1:64 model for those that Hot Wheels sells in the retail market, and a win at the national competition would have made that a reality. The winning car, a teal and white 1957 Nash Metropolitan, built by Greg Salzillo and Greg Ford out of the Los Angeles competition, will be inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends.

Zettle thought it was a good choice, but noted that the diecast car market is geared more toward children.

The Nash, like Zettle’s GTO, has a raised engine but is topped with a large pair of dice.

“The Hot Wheels aren’t the same as when we grew up,” said Zettle, who had a large laundry basket full of the die cast cars with his brother, Dave. “It’s got a little more of a

cartoon flavor to it, so I think kids today kind of flock toward that. The judges are probably looking out for the kids, and wanting to sell Hot Wheels cars.”

Zettle will continue his usual routine of attending local car shows and participating in select races in Byron. Only now, he’ll have an impressive spot on his resume.

Siblings Rebecca Hazzard, Jared Martin and Ella Martin recently purchased the former Nancy’s Sparkle Wash at 1069 W. Pines Road from Dan and Nancy Roos, who had owned it since 2000.

The transaction comes with a new name – Hawk Auto Wash and Storage.

The siblings plan to update the equipment to improve the car wash’s quality and efficiency.

“We appreciate the community’s patience as we do updates to the property and upgrades to the wash equipment,” Hazzard said. “We anticipate having all equipment, including the can crusher, back to working order over within the next several weeks.”

Battle of Stillman’s Run Monument built in 1901 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The monument and graves of the Battle of Stillman’s Run are located in Stillman Valley.

This monument was constructed in memory of the soldiers that lost their lives in the battle.

The marble and granite monument with an inscription on both sides faces the graves of the fallen soldiers.

This monument was erected by the Battlefield Memorial Association of Stillman Valley in 1901.

The 42nd Illinois General Assembly funded the construction of the monument.

In one of Marilyn’s and my afternoon drives in Ogle County we drove to the Stillman Valley Cemetery and the memorial.

I was amazed at the size and architecture of this monument. The column supporting the soldier at the top is impressive.

The battle was originally known as the Battle of Sycamore Creek or the Battle of Old Man’s Creek.

Eventually it was named for Major Stillman who ordered the full retreat to Dixon’s Ferry now Dixon.

This was the first battle in the 1832 Black Hawk War. Stillman’s Run Battle Site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The following are inscriptions on the monument.

“In memory of the Illinois volunteers who fell at Stillman’s Run, May 14, 1832 in an engagement with Black Hawk and his warriors.”--“The presence of soldier, statesman, martyr, Abraham Lincoln assisting in the burial of these honored dead has made this spot more sacred.”---Here on May 14, the first engagement of the Black Hawk War took place.

An article in the Chicago Tribune said “Stillman’s run was not a famous battle or a decisive conflict and it was an inglorious affair for far as the militiamen were concerned”. The command structure of the unit fell apart when it was needed the most.

The conduct of the Militia Volunteers and their leaders definitely caused the defeat of Stillman’s Run. Apparently we didn’t learn. Look at the number of soldiers lost in another disastrous defeat in the Vietnam War. Don’t misunderstand me. I am proud of our soldiers who fought for this great country. In Ogle County our ancestors constructed the wonderful memorials at Daysville, Byron and Stillman Valley.

Take a Sunday afternoon drive and receive three emotional experiences.

Major Isaiah Stillman was an American Cavalry Major who led the Illinois militia in the first armed

confrontation of the Black Hawk War. Isaiah Stillman was born and raised in the state of Massachusetts and left the east travelling to Illinois engaged as a trader of pots and pans.

He decided to join the Illinois militia as a captain at the age of 35 in 1827. By the early part of 1832 Isaiah had attained the rank of Brigadier General-elect.

In April of 1832, Illinois Governor John Reynolds ordered Stillman to raise a battalion for the Illinois mili-

tia. He was unable to recruit a full battalion, so he was made a major rather than a general. The next year after the Black Hawk War, he was promoted to general.

Stillman Valley is an historic town to drive through. The monument is located in Stillman Valley along route 72 which honors fallen soldier Cpl. Alex E. Catherwood from Byron.

He died in combat operations in Afghanistan on October 23, 2017.

Oregon to host 33rd Candlelight Walk Nov. 30 Kids events, music, food are all part of this annual event Oregon’s 33rd annual Candlelight Walk will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 3- 8 p.m.

This year organizers have added a couple of new attractions including a tree lighting ceremony on the Ogle County Courthouse Lawn with live music and hot chocolate beginning at 5 p.m.

“Thank you to RiverStone Church for their generous donation of new lighting,” said Vos. “There will be Candlelight Walk Carolers spreading holiday cheer throughout the town courtesy of Aireloom Music Studio.”

Central Bank is this year’s entertainment sponsor. “Stop in and visit them to see 102.3 The Coyote live on air, and the Central Cyclone where you can win some pretty big prizes,” Vos said.

The winter carnival for children and families will be held at the event room located in NorthSide BarbaQ from 3-8 p.m., at 117 N 4th St, Oregon.

“This year the kids winter carnival is all inclusive for a $5 donation to Candlelight Walk. They will be able to play an unlimited number of games all night, create special memories with the make and takes, take pictures with Santa, carriage rides, etc. for only $5,” Vos said. “Families will be able to save money and not be burdened by carrying handfuls of quarters.”

“Visit Conover Square where the festival first began to see this historic landmark, shop for one of a kind gifts, sweet treats, and see the OHS Madrigals at 6:30 p.m.,” Vos said.

The Holiday Gift Fair will be held on the main floor of the Coliseum featuring several talented local crafters with the OHS Band performance at 6:30 p.m.

The Candlelight Walk Committee is also offering a 50/50 raffle that also serves as a fundraiser for the event.

READING MATTERS

One size does not fit all for literacy learning COMMENTARY Mary Gardner Reading Specialist or bookstore. Others like graphic novels.

We can support our children and grandchildren as they develop reading preferences by offering a wide range of text topics and formats.

We should then note the things they particularly like and look for more of that kind of text. Your public librarians are happy to help you find materials.

There are also differences in how and where our children and grandchildren prefer to read. Some like to read alone in a favorite chair, some like to be under a table with a pillow.

It does not matter really, although there should be enough light.

Some choose to read with music on headphones, while others like it

quiet. Many prefer to partner read with someone and being read to rather than reading alone.

There is no right or wrong way.

We can also support these choices by providing many different reading locations and experiences so that our readers can learn what they like the most.

We surely enjoy the years when they love to cuddle on our laps to be read to!

Something we call reading stamina is also a way children are different. Some can sit and read for long periods of time, while others have difficulty sitting still that long for one activity.

Students are expected to be able to read for longer periods of time as they go through school. Stamina is something that builds over time.

We can encourage growth in reading stamina by expecting and supporting a gradual increase in the number of minutes our children read.

It will also help if we are by their

side as they work to build reading stamina giving encouragement as needed.

Of course, one of the most noticeable differences is the age or grade level at which children learn to read as well as the ease or difficulty in learning to read.

Reading is a complex process.

There are many areas that may break down and cause a child difficulty in learning to read.

Next month’s column will explore various reading difficulties and possible ways to support struggling readers.

Finally, attitude and motivation are a big part of learning to read.

It is vital to keep reading a positive experience.

We can do this by giving choices whenever possible in reading texts and formats.

Our attitudes toward books and reading do matter so enjoy time spent reading with your children and grandchildren whenever you can!

ur children and grandchildren are each different.

They like different foods, different colors, and different games to play.

They will also be different in many aspects of their literacy learning.

For this month, let’s consider some ways that they may vary and ways we can support them learning to read that respect their differences.

Just as children have different likes in foods, they also develop individual preferences for the kinds of books they prefer to read or have read to them.

They might choose fiction over nonfiction for example, and even specific favorites within each of those categories.

Favorite authors develop as well.

Today, children also develop preferences for the format of the texts they read.

Some prefer online reading or e-readers. Some like hard copy books or magazines from the library

SPORTS Byron takes care of business in win over Wilmington

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com After a disappointing runner-up finish in the 2018 state title game, the Byron football team has been on a mission in the 3A playoffs. On a sloppy home turf, the Tigers defeated Wilmington 32-0 for their third straight blowout win.

“It was so much fun playing the mud,” said lineman Peyton Lind, joining Dylan Collins, Izaiah Shultz, Hunter Lemke, Noah Salamone, Carson Wilsie and Tyler Elsbury in paving the way for 340 yards rushing in just three quarters. “We were really pushing the ball down their throat.”

Taking advantage of the holes made by the “Hogs”, Drake Snodgrass and Isaac Stickler ripped off runs of 70, 82, 59 and 43 yards. For good measure, Snodgrass (12-for-198 rushing) caught a 73-yard touchdown pass from Ben Carlson.

“They have kids that can make the big play and a good front line,” Wilmington coach Jeff Reents said.

“We couldn’t stop the run.”

The Wildcats did stop Byron at the 15-yard line on the opening possession, but didn’t know what hit them after that. Scoring on three of its next four offensive plays, Byron quickly took an 18-0 lead.

With Wilmington such a traditional 3A power, how the game unfolded may have came as a bit of shock for the large crowd at Everett Stine Field. The Wildcats held a 3-1 edge in hotly-contested playoff bouts since 2012.

“I have so much respect for coach Reents and his program,” Boyer said. “The difference today was that we played with so much focus and intensity. We were great on both sides of the ball.”

The Wildcats (10-2) never mounted any serious scoring threats and were forced to punt seven times.

After gaining the 18-0 lead, the Byron defense continued to exert itself with Louie Cretsinger tossing quarterback Ethan Bonnell for an 8-yard loss. Snodgrass and Tyler Elsbury also had tackles for major losses, with Wilmington only totaling 99 yards of offense and failing to gain a first down the final 14 minutes of the game.

Taking over near midfield, Snodgrass had a touchdown called back for holding and Carlson threw a great ball, only to see it dropped for a sure-touchdown.

That led to Byron’s only punt of the game, but Carlson aided his own cause with an interception near the Tiger sideline. It only took two plays after that for Stickler to score for the

“If they continue to play like they did today, it’s going to be difficult for anyone to beat them,” Reents said.

COMMENTARY Andy Colbert with declining numbers had to sit up and take notice or for that matter, maybe come over to Polo and check the game out.

It was more than a River Ridge-Polo fan base present.

The real payoff for Polo is greater than participating in this week’s state final at Monmouth College against a top flight opponent. The payoff comes in exactly what Faivre, Alston and Bumsted hoped for in going to 8-man and that is having more than enough bodies for the in-game experience.

No more relying on freshmen and sophomores to fill positions and get demoralized by the experience. In 8-man, Polo can revert back to the good old days of having plenty of personnel around to give validity to a varsity roster.

No longer is Polo putting bandages on to survive the season. With that comes a resurgence of a program, especially knowing you are no longer fighting an uphill battle.

The only uphill battle left for the Marcos is leading the fledging 8-man league to credibility and vibrancy.

And, that will be done.

The local area could have IA, 2A and 3A state champs in LenaWinslow, Sterling Newman and Byron.

One question bandied about is

whether Le-Win could compete with Byron in 3A. Certainly they could stick with Newman and perhaps beat them.

There is not a great difference between IA and 2A, but there is in 3A. Based upon having seen them both play, Le-Win would beat the majority of 3A teams, but Byron is out of its league.

Le-Win has the two best IA players in Sean Ormiston and Isaiah Bruce, but Byron has way too much talent for the Panthers to match up with them.

Additionally, lineman Tyler Elsbury of Byron is a different beast than what Le-Win is accustomed to.

The Tigers’ quarterback is extremely gifted and their running backs are special. The only question would be if Byron’s defense could shut down that vaunted L-W running attack.

With the semifinals looming, it is quiet possible Le-Win and Byron will put running clocks of their opponents - Annawan-Wethersfield and Princeton. That is how good both these squad are.

Last week, mention was made of Sycamore’s overtime win over Lombard Montini, a team they had lost to six times before in the playoffs.

Unfortunately for Sycamore, they were dealt the cruelest of playoff losses to Boylan.

Completely dominating the game, Sycamore was upset I9-I6, when Boylan returned two long fumbles for touchdowns. A last-second field goal, that would have tied the game,

was also blocked by Boylan and Sycamore bows out of the playoffs and all that is left for a great senior class to do is wonder ‘what if’.

I hate to bring up painful memories, but I couldn’t help but think to a similar situation in 2008 at Carthage.

That is where Oregon held a 23-7 fourth quarter lead and were in complete control, only to see Carthage Illini West manage to win.

Sycamore’s loss was more of a fluke, but what happened to Oregon defied odds. There were about a dozen things that had to happen for Carthage to win.

If even one did not, they would not have a chance and some of them were really long shots, like converting a fourth-and-long.

I laid out the various scenarios to a math whiz and he calculated the odds of Illini West pulling off each scenario. It came out to I4,000-I. That sounds high, but it was an extremely bizarre finish.

In talking with the Illini West coach after the game, he told me that he couldn’t even believe how they won.

At getting physically beat up by halftime, he admitted to wondering what he could do to prevent his team from completely getting destroyed.

At the time, he had no intention of winning, rather wanted just to keep it close.

If there is any consolation, Oregon’s loss pales in comparison to what happened to Sycamore. At least the Hawks had made a previous trip to the state finals.

Sycamore is still seeking one and this was the best chance in decades.

xcitement abounds at Polo High School, as the Marcos prepare for the 8-man state football championship.

Normally in the background to their friends from Forreston, it is Polo time to shine in the November limelight.

When the 3-man brain trust of Andy Faivre, Ted Alston and Jeff Bumsted did yeoman’s work in researching a move to 8-man, the main objective was to keep a football program viable at the school.

Their decision to go boldly into the unknown was roundly discussed by old-time Marco backers and even area casual grid fans.

I don’t think there was much opposition to it, just a realization that the high-school football world is different now than what it was decades ago. One would think in the big scheme of things, a decision for a school to play 8-man ball instead of II-man is inconsequential.

Logically yes, but emotionally no. Football has an absolutely huge influence on us, be it pro, college or preps.

The biggest struggle for Polo was probably the weirdness of scheduling with the long-distance trips and inferior quality of play. Compared to the NUIC, it was a I80-degree difference.

That’s okay. As a pioneer for 8-man, Polo knew there would be adversity to overcome. Eventually, competition will get better and road trips will be reduced as more and more schools get involved.

Playing last Friday brought plenty of exposure to Polo football and the 8-man game. Other nearby schools

Marcos to play for title after rout of River Ridge Polo beats Wildcats 64-20 to advance to 8-Man title game

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com In-game adversity has been an infrequent occurrence for a Polo 8-man football team that has crushed 10 opponents thus far.

The Marcos, however, found themselves in a dogfight for a while against River Ridge in a playoff semifinal on Nov. 15.

But that fight didn’t last long.

Polo played a nearly flawless second half and cruised home with a 64-20 victory against the Wildcats before a chilly but hearty crowd.

Next up will be the 8-man title game on Friday against either Milford/ Cissna Park or Flanagan-Cornell/ Woodland. Those teams play on Saturday.

It is the first season of 8-man football in Polo, and a berth in the title game left the Marcos in an emotional state.

“It feels awesome. I can’t explain it,” Polo coach Jeff Bumsted said. “I was choked up. I couldn’t talk to the kids. It’s probably the best moment of my coaching career.”

“We knew we had the ability at the beginning of the season to get this far, but we also knew it wasn’t going to be handed to us,” senior quarterback/defensive end Tucker Mumford added. “We were going to have to work for it every game, and we did. We were willing to put in the work, and we’re there now.”

River Ridge (8-4) took advantage of a pair of Polo turnovers to claw within 24-20 midway through the second quarter. A 64-yard touchdown pass from Bryton Engle to

But it was all Polo the rest of the way. A 5-yard run by Jace Coffey 58 seconds before halftime put the Marcos up 32-20 at the break.

Polo then scored on four of five second-half possessions, and also cashed in on all four two-point conversion tries. In the first half, Polo was 1-for-5 in that department.

River Ridge did not score in the second half, and only had 72 yards of offense after halftime.

“We came out with the mentality that River Ridge was not going to score on us again,” Mumford said. ”If they did score, we were going to have to match that. Every time the ball touched our hands, we were going to score on that possession.”

bination of attempting difficult dives, then hitting them.

Already with 16 points before the swimming even started, the Tigers started off that portion of the meet with a bang, too. The quartet of Schilling, Hailey Groharing, Avery Clark and Kilmer sprinted to victory in the 200 medley relay, topping runner-up Rockford Auburn 150.64-1:53.11.

That set the tone for the rest of the meet.

As the meet wound down, Byron and Boylan were neck-and-neck in the team standings. The Tigers eliminated all doubt with a come-from-behind win in the 400 freestyle relay, as Schilling, Jenna Hale, Groharing and Kilmer beat Boylan 3:38.12-3:41.57 to win the meet finale and the sectional plaque.

The Community Christmas Concert will again be Saturday afternoon. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. at the Methodist Church.

“This festive event will include local musical groups. The Rock River Valley Barbershop Chorus will be the featured act,” Koeller said.

Donations of non-perishable food items and money will be accepted and donated to the New Life Pantry and the Forreston Lions Club for their Christmas boxes.

New this year is the Community Soup Supper. This event is a fundraiser for Forreston Sauerkraut Days.

The supper will be at the Forreston Fire station community room from 4-7 p.m.. The menu will include choice of soup – chili, potato, or sauerkraut; choice of sandwich – ham or turkey; chips, dessert, and a drink. Cost is $7 for a whole order or $4 for a half order.

The Forreston Area Business Association is once again sponsoring Forreston’s annual holiday event, Christmas in the Country, on Friday, Dec 6 and Saturday, Dec 7.

The festivities kick off Friday at 9 a.m. with Rolls and Coffee at the United Methodist Church. There will also be the annual bazaar and Christmas Corner at the church. At 11 a.m., the Methodist Church is again the place to be for the popular Lasagna/Soup/Sandwich/Dessert luncheon. The luncheon is available until 2 p.m.

The Faith Lutheran Cookie Sale will start at 4 p.m. downtown in the building next to Sweetwood Interiors. The sale will last until the cookies are gone, but get there early for the best, most delicious, selection.

New this year is the Play to Learn Together Gift Shop featuring Discovery Toys, books, and games.

The toy top will be located inside Believe in the Children. To make shopping easier, there will be supervised crafts for the kids. The shop will be open from 4-7 p.m.

No Holiday celebration would be complete without a visit from Santa.

He will arrive at Memorial Park by fire engine and will help with the tree lighting at 5 p.m. Kids can visit until 6 p.m.

“While you are at the park you can enjoy some hot chocolate sponsored

by Forreston Area Business Association,” Koeller said. “At 6 p.m., Santa will travel by fire truck to the Forreston Library. He will visit with kids until 7:30 p.m.

The library will also provide cookies, hot chocolate, and Christmas ornaments to make.

Church banners as art to be displayed at Encore!

Mt. Morris in Nov., Dec. Art can be expressed through a wide variety of media, including church banners.

Encore! Mt. Morris will be featuring church banners in its Sandstone Gallery, 122 S. Wesley Ave. The Sandstone Gallery will be open for the church banner art show on Nov. 30, 1-5 p.m.; Dec 1, 12-4 p.m.; Dec 7, 1-5 p.m. and Dec 8, 12-2 p.m. and 4:30-6 p.m. (before and after the 3 p.m. Cantata at Trinity Lutheran Church).

Many of these originally-designed and often-handmade banners hang in seven local churches for a variety of seasons and celebratory Christian events.

For example, fabric banners are often hung for Advent, Christmas, Easter, Palm Sunday and Lent.

Sometimes, they display scriptures or visuals appropriate for special events such as baptism, foot washing, Holy Communion, confirmation or weddings.

Other banners may welcome people to a church, commemorate an anniversary of the church’s founding, inspire the congregation to get involved, such as in Bible study or

mission work, and even celebrate universal Christian values such as praise, peace or agape love.

“This holiday season, come see many beautiful banners shared by the Disciples United Methodist Church, the Evangelical Free Church, Leaf River Baptist, Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren, St. James Lutheran, Trinity Lutheran, and West Branch Church of the Brethren,” said organizer Molly Baker.

Hutchinson’s bond was set at $582 full cash pending a court appearance.

Nov. 13 Moni Magar, 23 of Aurora, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Magar posted $825 bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail with no return court date required.

Amy Orsted, 30 of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for possession of a controlled substance. Orsted appeared in court and was released on a $5,000 recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court

Nov. 18 Jamie C. Donovan, 28, of Rochelle, was arrested at 1:59 p.m. on an Ogle County warrant for a traffic offense.

Donovan was scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 19.

Byron Civic Theatre will have a production of “Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus,” a play written by Andrew J. Fenady, based on real events.

The play opens Nov. 29-Dec. 1 and continues Dec. 6-8, with shows at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays.

The title of the play comes from an actual letter written by 8-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon to the editor of the New York Sun in 1897. The real-life response to Virginia, written by Frank Church, is magical – particularly in the wake of Church losing his wife and baby the previous year.

Byron Civic Theatre’s production features a cast of children and adults from the community, bringing to life a story that is now part of popular Christmas folklore in the United States.

The Story The play is inspired by a poignant letter written over 100 years

ago by an 8-year-old to the editor of the New York Sun, and the timeless response. Virginia wondered and wrote: “Dear Editor, I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says if you see it in the Sun, it’s so. Please tell me the truth. Is there a Santa Claus?” Ed Mitchell, the Sun’s editor, gives the assignment of answering Virginia’s letter to Frank Church who, until his wife and baby died last Christmas Eve, was the Sun’s best and most dependable reporter.

The trip includes a sit down 3-course lunch at 11:30 a.m. Show time is two hours and 30 minutes beginning at 1:30 p.m. The fee is $75 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $90 for non-residents.

Carol Esther (Rucker) Hachmeister, 89, passed away on Nov. 14, 2019 at Serenity Hospice and Home, Oregon.

Carol was born Jan. 2, 1930 to Anson and Mary Viola (Knapp) Rucker.

She completed grade school at Doty School west of Polo and graduated from Polo High School in 1948. She married Walter Hachmeister in a double ceremony with Jim Melvin and Marilyn Bollman on August 18, 1956.

Carol enjoyed travel, planning every detail of many great trips with family and friends over the years.

Carol’s non-complaining courage in her battle with cancer and her unselfish concern for others through it all was truly inspiring.

The oldest of four children Curt is survived by Vicki Miller and Lisa Williams.

He was preceded in death by his wife and brother Mike (Butch) McKean.

He loved the Cubbies, the Colts, Penn State, crappie fishing, his dogs, and Elvis

Presley.

He found his passion when he learned to lay brick, which led to his career as a successful mason contractor for most of his life. McKean Masonry was the company to call if you needed a fireplace, chimney, house, cinema, or apartment complex, and you cannot drive around Illinois without passing by his brick, stone, and block work.

He was a tough boss, but no matter

what your background, if you worked hard and showed up every day, he would give you a chance.

He love to read, particularly WWII history, and he could enthusiastically defend his point of view in any situation.

Robert Curtis McKean (Curt), 80, of Polo passed away on Monday, Nov. 11, 2019.

He was born on June 24, 1939 in Ogle County to Robert Curtis and Betty Jane (Smith) Sarber. He married Bonnie Lou Hansen McKean on Oct 9, 1964.

Survivors include his children Robert McKean, Michelle McKean, and Greg McKean, and family members Corinne

keeper for the National Turkey Federation in Mt. Morris from 1948 to 1955 with fond memories of travel to annual conventions from Los Angeles to Atlantic City.

After a long career in various secretarial and bookkeeping jobs, Carol retired from Stillman Valley Bank in 1992. She was an active member of Kishwaukee Presbyterian Church serving as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and treasurer of KPW. She was a member of the Stillman Valley Women’s Club and Friends of the Library.
