1861 summer kitchen gets new home Painstaking move took several hours to complete

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The relief was obvious early Tuesday afternoon when, after months of planning and days of preparation, a historic brick building safely arrived by flatbed at its new location in Oregon.

The small crowd of people waiting at Phelps Park behind the Coliseum burst into cheers as the truck carrying the brick summer kitchen, built by Oregon founder John Phelps back in 1861, rounded the corner from Ill. 64 onto Fifth Street.

Moving the structure was a community project spearheaded by Oregon Together with help from the Ogle County Historical Society.

“I’m still nervous. I’ll believe it when it’s sitting here,” said Oregon Together member Roger Cain as the crew from Heritage Movers, of Mt. Hope, Wisconsin, jumped out of their trucks and started the lengthy process of getting the building onto its new concrete footing.

Earlier in the day he had voiced concerns over the fragile bricks successfully making the trip from Robert and Esther Mongan’s farm approximately four miles away.

Historical society member Otto Dick had a practical concern. “I just hope it fits my footing,” he said with a grin, referring to the concrete at the new location.

However, Rus Childs, one of the owners of Heritage Movers, said the preparation and move had gone according to plan.

“It all went smoothly,” he said. “It was mostly making sure it would stay together. The bricks are deteriorating.

It took a lot of banding - we do extra banding. We’ve moved a lot of brick houses.”

The project started almost two years ago when Robert Mongan, who lives on the farm homesteaded by Phelps on Ill. 64 between Oregon and Mt. Morris, contacted Dick to see if he wanted to take a photo of the summer kitchen before he tore it down to make way for an addition to his house.

After further discussion, the Mongans readily agreed to donate the building.

Dick enlisted the help of Cain and the Oregon Together Arts & Beautification Committee, which began raising funds for the move and restoration at the new site.

with steel I-beams, bracing, and banding.

They worked late Monday evening, cutting it loose from its foundation and raising it a few inches.

The heavy-duty banding ran from the I-beams on the outside underneath the bricks, every few inches, and were secured to the I-beams on the inside.

The crew started early Tuesday morning slowly and painstakingly raising the building with hydraulic jacks placed on the four corners.

Shortly before noon it was high enough for the flatbed to be backed underneath, and then the building was

gently lowered and secured for the trip to Oregon.

It pulled out of Mongan’s driveway at 12:15 p.m. and nearly an hour later was at its destination.

Cain said an estimated $20,000, most of which has been raised, will be needed for the $12,000 move and subsequent restoration.

Most of the funds came from private donations, with the exception of a $6,000 contribution from the City of Oregon.

With the summer kitchen safely situated on its new footings, the bricks can be tucked-pointed and the restoration work can begin.

Decades-old law means top vote getters may not be elected

Currently voters across the district vote for all candidates, and in several instances the top vote getters had carried all nine townships, but still were not elected.

“Losing representation is one of the arguments against the at-large election, but everyone votes for all candidates,” Rademacher said. “This is not fair to the voters — they aren’t getting the board members they voted for. We would be better served if the people who have run and want to be on the board get elected.”

Another complicating factor in the current system, Rademacher said, is that congressional township boundaries are not always the same as the geographical townships.

In this case, congressional Buffalo Township includes the northern third of geographical Woosung Township.

An at-large election will remove that source of confusion, he said.

This is the third time the school board has placed this referendum on the ballot. It was defeated in 2007 and again in 2016.

In 2007, the measure had to pass in every township, and it was defeated by voters in Brookville, Eagle Point, Lincoln, Pine Creek, and Woosung Townships for a total of 243 noes to 209 yeses overall.

Voters in Buffalo, Jordan (White-

side County), and Palmyra (Lee County) approved the measure, and no one cast a vote on it in Grand Detour Township.

By 2016, state laws had changed to require that to pass, it needed a two-thirds, or 66.7 percent, majority overall.

That time the referendum was approved 1149 to 704, but still failed because it is was only a 62 percent majority.

A majority of voters in Eagle Point, Grand Detour, Pine Creek and Palmyra Townships said no two years ago, while Jordan Township voters were evenly split.

Rademacher said he is somewhat baffled by the opposition because, for the most part, it is coming from townships that no candidates have come from in the last three elections.

“These townships voted no, but they have no candidates,” he said. “I have no problem with them voting no, but then they need to run for the board.”

School board elections are held every two years in April, with four terms expiring at one election and three at the next. Terms are four years in length.

The next school board election is April 2, 2019.

The Forrestville Valley and Oregon School Districts also have the same residency limitation for board members.

Only three contested local races on Nov. 6 ballot

Voters in three of the eight Ogle County Board districts will get to choose from three candidates running for two four-year terms on the board.

In District 2, which includes Oregon-Nashua, White Rock, Pine Rock, and Lafayette Townships, Democrat Jerry Shirar, of Oregon, a newcomer, is challenging Republican incumbents Pat Nordman and Wayne Reising, both of Oregon.

In District 7, which includes Mt. Morris, Maryland, and Forreston Townships, three newcomers are competing, Independent Chris Kolling, of Mt. Morris, and Republicans Dean Fox, of German Valley, and Stan Asp, of Mt. Morris.

In District 3, which includes Flagg Township Precincts 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7,

Republican incumbent Greg Sparrow and two newcomers Lloyd Droege, a Democrat, and Jamey Sulser, a Republican, are the candidates. All three are from Rochelle.

Each of the other five districts has two Republican candidates running unopposed for two seats.

In District 1, which includes Dement, Lynnville, Monroe, and Scott Townships, incumbent Rick Fritz, of Monroe Center, and newcomer Benjamin Pihl Youman, of Davis Junction, are running.

In District 4, which includes Flagg Township Precincts 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, and 11, incumbents John (Skip) Kenney and Bruce W. McKinney are on the ballot.

In District 5, which includes Marion, Rockvale, and Leaf River Townships, incumbents Martin Typer and Richard Daniel Janes, both of Stillman Valley, are running.

In District 6, which includes Byron

Township, incumbent Dorothy R. Bowers and newcomer Todd M. McLester, both of Byron, are running.

In District 8, which includes Brookville, Lincoln, Eagle Point, Buffalo, Pine Creek, Woosung, Grand Detour, and Taylor Townships, incumbent Lyle Hopkins, of Polo, and newcomer Susie Corbitt, also of Polo, are the candidates.

Also running unopposed are Brian VanVickle for a second term as Ogle County Sheriff, Laura Cook for a second term as county clerk, Linda Beck for her first term as county treasurer, and Robert Sondergroth for a third term as regional superintendent of schools for Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside Counties.

Voters will also be asked whether or not they wish to retain three judges — Second Appellate Court Judge Robert D. McLaren in the Second Judicial District, and 15th Judicial Circuit Court Judges Robert T. Hanson and

Michael P. Bald.

Two referendums will also be on the ballot.

In the Polo School District, voters will be asked in they want to elect school board members at large. Currently only three board members can come from the same congressional township within the district.

The measure failed in 2007 and 2016.

Voters in the New Milford Fire Protection District will decide if they are willing to increase the property tax rate.

Other races on the Nov. 6 ballot are Illinois Governor and Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Comptroller, Treasurer, State Senator, and State Representative, as well as U.S. Congressman.

The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. Candidate profiles for Ogle County Board Districts 2 and 7 appear on page 22.

Polo school officials are hoping voters will overturn a decades-old election law when they go to the polls Nov. 6.

A referendum on the ballot will ask district residents to vote whether or not school board members should be elected at large, rather than restricted by where they live.

Currently, under a law that dates back to at least the 1950s, no more than three of the seven board members can reside in the same congressional township.

Although the law was designed to ensure equal representation among more and less populous townships, the effect in the recent past has actually thwarted the democratic process.

“The top vote getters don’t always get elected,” said Superintendent Chris Rademacher.

In 2015, for example, four candidates were running for four open four-year terms on the board, making it appear that all four would be shoo-ins.

However, the candidate with the second high total was defeated because he lived in Buffalo Township, and there were already three board Chris Rademacher members from there.

To further complicate that election, five candidates were also running for two unexpired two-year terms on the board, and state law requires that two-year terms are seated before four-year terms.

Consequently, candidates with lower totals were seated on the board because they lived in a township other than Buffalo — Woosung or Lincoln in this case.

Although more than enough candidates had run for the board, only four could be seated because of the residency requirement.

“In 2015 we had nine candidates [for six seats] but had to appoint two,” Rademacher said. “Since 2007, eight board members have had to be appointed.”

Eliminating the residency requirement would solve the problem.

Camp Grant was built to house 10,000 soldiers Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Headline in the Republican Reporter newspaper: “Camp Grant To Be Largest Of Kind in Nation. Will Be Receiving Point For Maximum Ten Thousand Men Drafted In Service.”

Camp Grant was located just south of Rockford and was named in honor of American Civil War General and President Ulysses S. Grant.

It covered an area of 6,640 acres during World War I, 3,200 acres during World War II and was in operation from 1917 to 1946.

Illinois Governor Frank Lowden, from Oregon, with his knowledge of the Rock River Valley, knew of land available south of Rockford and convinced the United States government to build a camp there.

Presently this is the location of the Rockford airport.

In three months, starting June 24, 1917, more than 180 barracks were built. More than 1,000 buildings were constructed on this site.

Carpenters, painters, steam-fitters, metal workers, plumbers, electricians and other workers totaled 5,000.

A total of 5,500 carloads of lumber were hauled in by rail. The camp base hospital contained 61 buildings.

Five passenger trains traveled each way daily between Rochelle and Camp Grant.

This railroad was located on the west edge of the camp and exists today. It runs from Rochelle through Kings and Holcomb to Rockford.

This camp had several unique service areas.

One area called the remount depot housed the horses and mules. The camp also had an area for blacksmiths.

Another area of the camp was the pigeon section. Carrier pigeons transmitted messages for the Army.

Men were trained to handle and care for the pigeons.

World War I Camp Grant was one of the largest military training facilities in the United States.

In 1918, the Spanish Influenza affected more than 4,000 men at the camp, taking the lives of more than 1,000 between Sept. 23 and Oct. 1.

This camp was closed from December of 1923 until January of 1924 when it reopened serving the Illinois National Guard.

After World War I, Camp Grant was used by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1933 and 1935.

Later, in 1939, one of the CCC camps in this area was located at the fairgrounds north of Oregon.

In February of 1941, Camp Grant was returned to the federal government from the State of Illinois.

At this time it served as a World War II Induction Center and Army Medical Service Training Center.

This facility provided physical and medical exams for new U.S. Army soldiers.

A large number of personnel also went through Camp Grant for their Army basic training.

After the war ended, the barracks buildings were converted into apartments.

These homes were utilized by returning GIs who had young families.

By the late 1940s these residents were moved out and the buildings torn down.

It’s interesting to me that young men from Oregon were trained for the Civil War at Rockford’s Camp Fuller and during World War I and World War II at Camp Grant.

Camp Fuller is now a Rockford residential area and Camp Grant an airport. The Camp Grant rifle range is now Seth Atwood Park.

Creston man indicted on child pornography charges A Creston man was indicted last week by a federal grand jury in Rockford on charges of child pornography.

Eric Canchola, 25, was charged with four counts of transporting child pornography via the internet between March and April 2018.

He was also charged with one count of possessing two iPods, a desktop computer, and two portable hard drives in May 2018, that con-

tained an image of child pornography involving a prepubescent minor and a minor who had not attained 12 years of age.

The indictment was announced by John R. Lausch, Jr. United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Jeffrey S. Sallet, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Chicago.

The government is represented by

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael D. Love.

Each count of transporting child pornography carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years and a maximum of 20 years in prison.

The possessing child pornography charge carries a maximum of up to 20 years in prison. Each count carries a $250,000 maximum fine.

If Canchola is convicted, the court

must impose a reasonable sentence under federal sentencing statutes and the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines.

The public is reminded that an indictment contains only charges and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which the government has the burden of proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

“People often don’t realize that children grieve,” said Cathy Warren Bereavement Coordinator for Serenity.

“Their grief is different but should be worked through just as an adult. A child also needs to find their new normal without a loved one.”

Serenity invites anyone to drop by The Shed, 131 N. Third St., Oregon, with a child who has experienced the death of a loved one.

Even if it is the child’s friend’s mom or someone you consider somewhat distanced from the child, he or she will still have questions.

Hockison receives Excellence in Education grant Teacher gets $533 to provide art therapy for at-risk students June Hockison, a teacher at the Chana Education Center, was recently awarded a grant for $533.34 from the Excellence in Education Grants for Teachers Program.

The Illinois Retired Teachers Association Foundation awarded nearly $36,500 in grant money throughout the program to several public school educators statewide.

Hockison requested the award for provides art therapy to students attending an alternative high school that serves students who have adverse childhood experiences, resulting in behavioral issues.

Students are given the oppor-

tunity to express themselves through various artistic mediums, including sculpting, drawing, painting, string art, origami, and even scrapbooking.

The IRTAF designed this program based on the idea that educators often do not have additional revenue sources available for unique student projects or classroom materials.

Applicants were required to meet the proper criteria and to submit their proposals by early June.

The IRTAF Board of Directors selected the grant recipients and awards are being presented now.

The Illinois Principals Association played a vital role in assisting IRTAF with the promotion of this program.

The IRTAF is affiliated with the Illinois Retired Teachers Association, a lobbying group for retired educators, with a current membership of more than 38,000.

Reduce waste by recycling or repurposing items It is so easy. Just throw it in with the trash, or just put it out at the curb.

Like most things, if it is out of sight, then it is out of mind.

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department would like to remind Ogle County residents about overall waste reduction.

With two active landfills in Ogle County, and another landfill at the border, keep in mind that final disposal for all sorts of waste is not all that far away.

While landfilling is an option for some materials that have met their serviceable end, residents should always think about the materials they purchase, and what they are going to do with them when they do not have a use for them anymore.

If it goes to the landfill, there it stays, buried, for many, many years.

Many items can be used beyond their original intent, or maybe recycled and turned into a new product.

The OCSWMD encourages waste reduction and re-use of materials

whenever possible, and offers several means to achieve that end.

Things to consider include smart shopping, meaning only what is needed for a meal or home project is purchased, and looking around the home first to determine the amount actually needed.

Preserve and use all leftovers from meals. Use reusable shopping bags, so as to avoid disposable plastic bags.

Use reusable containers, water bottles, and coffee mugs when pack-

“Participants could choose from a water aerobics or twinge class and attended our spa portion together,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation. “The spa portion focused on the ‘The World Kneads You – Rise Up’ and included entertainment, refreshments, an uplifting message from Rosann Costello, and optional massage by Alpine Chiropractic. Water aerobics classes were taught by Elizabeth and the entertainment of the Spa portion was led

“I saw some nerves from my girls,” he said.

Sami Wasmund and Morgan Wills, the coach’s niece, came up with kills to help their team take the lead back at 22-21. Taylor Greenfield then tied it at 22-apiece with Erdmann getting ready to make a return to the front line.

A Wills kill and tremendous Pirate defensive effort on two kill attempts by Erdmann gave Galena a 24-22 lead.

“We wanted to cheat the middle to (Erdmann’s) side,” Wills said.

Wills and his players knew where the ball was going and were defenseless in stopping Erdmann from making three straight kills, the latter a nifty tip to give Forreston match point at 25-24.

Galena caught a break when the potential winning serve went out of bounds. But, it was Erdmann slamming down another point for 26-25 match point.

The Forreston volleyball team put itself in position to win its 2A sectional semifinal against a standout Galena team, undefeated in NUIC play since 2016.

The Cardinals led 13-7 in the second contest and had match point three times in game one.

Both times, though, the Pirates survived and advanced to the sectional final with a 29-27, 25-21 win.

Still, it was an evenly matched battle that could have gone either way.

“I knew going in that it was going to be tough,” Forreston coach Shannon Williams said. “Even though we were up at times and in position to win, we just didn’t have the energy and excitement we had from last Thursday.”

For the large crowd at Port Byron Riverdale, including fans from Orion and Lena-Winslow waiting for the nightcap, it was a nail biter between Forreston and Galena from the opening serve when Forreston got an ace and the Pirates came right back with a block of a Katie Erdmann kill attempt.

Galena took the early advantage 13-6, with the most impressive rally point coming after two great digs and a block to go up 9-6.

“We knew they’d be hitting on the strong side and planned our defense accordingly,” Wills said. “We just wanted to live to play another play.”

With Alexus Houston serving, the Cardinals finally got back into the game. In five straight points, it was return error and out-of-bounds by Galena, a pair of kills by Erdmann and service ace.

“They kept us out of our system,” Galena coach Dennis Wills said.

Forreston finally got a lead at 17-16 on another Erdmann kill.

Grace Carr, who had a critical kill earlier in Galena rally, kept service for four points, including an ace in that stretch.

“I’m proud of how the girls kept their composure and worked their way back into the game. They didn’t give up which I was extremely proud of them for,” Williams said.

From that part of the game on, neither team was able to take more than a 2-point lead.

Hawks fall to high-flying Le-Win at regional

BY ADAM FEINER afeiner@saukvalley.com Last year, it was a talented and versatile Orion team that knocked Oregon out of the Class 2A volleyball postseason.

On Oct. 25 in the 2A Lena-Winslow Regional final, the Hawks ran up against an eerily similar foe in the host Panthers.

Le-Win used two setters to spread the ball around to several players capable of slamming and stuffing hits to cruise past the Hawks 25-16, 25-14 for the regional title.

“We’ve seen that big of a block this season, but we haven’t seen a team with that type of explosiveness at every single position,” Oregon coach Faith McNamee said.

“They’re a phenomenal team, and we knew that going in. I felt like we prepared well the last two practices, but we just weren’t the better team.”

Oregon (24-12) played the Panthers tough early on in both sets, but Le-Win simply seemed to overpower the underdog Hawks.

The first set featured eight ties in the first 26 points of the match, as Oregon battled through stretches of miscommunication to knot the score at 13-all.

Lena-Winslow (32-5) proceeded to run off seven straight points via the service of Ella Brunner, while Madi Schultz and Olivia Matz started to take control offensively and defensively at the net. A kill by Ana Zinke and a Hawk hitting error capped the opening set.

“We were like a whole different team from the first 13 points to the end of the set,” McNamee said. “It was a mix of them serving aggressively and attacking, and us getting momentum back.”

The two teams alternated points four times to start the second set, but more Oregon miscommunication helped the Panthers to a 9-4 lead. An ace by Jenna Bidlingmaier put LeWin up 12-7, but Bailey Nelson wasn’t going to let her illustrious high school career come to a close without a fight.

Nelson, a DePaul recruit, slammed four kills in a row to keep Oregon within striking distance.

“I wanted to go out with a bang, and I knew the team was counting on me,” Nelson said. “I was trying as hard as I could to help us pull out a win.”

The Panthers found the answer, as Megan Packard’s kill off a free ball and a Jaden Julius ace put Le-Win up 17-11.

“It seemed like it went down every single time,” Julius said. “We kept

getting big kills, and the momentum just kept us rolling.”

Zinke finished off a long rally with a huge kill to make it 22-13 Panthers, and Jenna Zeal closed the match with an ace.

Nelson still finished with a matchhigh 10 kills for Oregon, but she spent most of her night trying to find a way past the high-flying Julius.

“This is a very smart volleyball team. They’re very analytical,” Lena-Winslow coach Sue Amendt said. “Jaden sacrificed a bit of her offense to do that, but we had kids like Megan Packard, Ana Zinke and Olivia Matz step in and fill that void.

“It was a lot of key players doing their jobs, and that’s what we want to see at this point in the season.”

Nelson also registered a teamhigh 10 digs for the Hawks, while libero McKenna Sadler pitched in nine digs. Ella Martin dished out 10 assists and chipped in three digs, and Hannah Donaldson also had three digs. Abi Hopkins finished with four digs and two kills. McKenna Mongan tallied two kills and two blocks for Oregon.

Le-Win out-killed the Hawks 31-17.

Schultz hammered nine kills and helped with nine digs, and Zinke added six kills. Packard and Matz each had five kills, while Zeal was in the right spot for 16 digs.

“Their physical ability was at a much higher level than ours because they were so much taller,” Nelson said. “They had a big block, and we had a hard time hitting around it.

We couldn’t get up to block because they hit so high.”

Julius (16 assists) and Bidlingmaier (eight assists) split setting duties for the Panthers based on which

Stickler had 199 yards on 12 carries, Drake Snodgrass 142 on 12 and Messling 104 on 17. For the year, Byron is averaging an astounding 10 yards a carry with Snodgrass at 16 yards, Stickler 12 and Messling eight.

“Messling would probably have more, but that’s the nature of being a fullback,” Boyer said.

With that kind of rushing attack, the Tigers are looking eerily similar to the record-setting state-championship team from 1999 of which Boyer was the quarterback.

In the second round, Byron will travel to Princeton (7-3), who beat Elmwood 39-12. Game time is 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

If Byron wins, they would be guaranteed a home game in the third round.

The Big Northern fared quite well in the first round, with Stillman Valley, Genoa-Kingston and North Boone all winning.

In 4A, Stillman hosts Elmhurst (IC Catholic) at 1 p.m. on Nov. 3.

The No. 1-ranked team in 3A passed its first major test on the road to a possible state title appearance.

In a 50-14 first-round playoff win Oct. 27, the Byron Tigers (10-0) ran all over Rock Island (5-5) from the much larger Western Big-6 conference.

“The main talk this week was that they played 6A and 7A schools in the their conference,” Byron lineman Tyler Elsbury said. “With such a big emphasis on that, we came ready to compete.”

Elsbury anchored a line that opened huge holes for seven rushing touchdowns. Fullback Ricky Messling had four of those and Isaac Stickler, Ben Carlson and Tyler Camling one each.

“We have great running backs, but it starts out front with us,” said the 6-5, 295-pound Elsbury, who has offers from Iowa, Illinois, Purdue and NIU. Besides the 500 plus yards gained offensively, the Tiger defense contained RIA star quarterback Sam Mattecheck for most of the game.

Mattecheck drove the Pioneers deep inside Byron territory early, but came up short on a pair of fourthdown attempts.

“Byron is well-coached and got off the ball extremely well,” RIA coach Todd Deporter said.

It was Drake Snodgrass making an athletic pass break-up on the first one and Zak Alberts stopping the second drive with and interception.

“Our defense played extremely well,” Byron coach Jeff Boyer said.

Byron went on an 80-yard drive to start the game with a 7-0 lead. They continued to crack off long runs, but penalties and a fumble stymied the next two possessions. Still, they led 29-0 at halftime.

Forreston crushes Hiawatha in first round of 1A

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com At halftime of the Forreston and Kirkland-Hiawatha 1A playoff game Oct. 27, Hawk coach Jason Keneway had the look of bewilderment.

On the first play from scrimmage, top rusher Kyle Thompson was injured. Just before halftime, quarterback Ty Kilcullen was also lost for the rest of the game with another injury.

To compound matters, Hiawatha trailed 48-0 to a Forreston team that piled up 390 yards rushing in the first 24 minutes, averaging 13 yards a carry.

“I’ve got to get new guys lined up and organized,” said Keneway, who only had 21 able bodies to begin with. “I’ve never had so many injuries. It makes it even harder going up against a team as good as Forreston.”

Hiawatha (6-4) also lost a pair of 2-way starters three weeks ago from broken elbows. Fortunately, they had foreign-exchange students from Thailand, Switzerland and Germany on the field playing.

“From the first play on, we had to bring in second string players,” Keneway said.

It took Forreston only four plays to go 58 yards, with Austin Mitchell starting the scoring parade. While Hiawatha struggled to find any sort of back-up to Thompson, the Cardi-

“What most impressed us was their speed. We’ve never seen anything like it,” Keneway said.

Kilcullen did lead Hiawatha to the Cardinal 6-yard line with the key play being a 21-yard pass to sophomore Austin Brantley. Kilcullen did complete 9-of-18 passes for 112 yards, with two interceptions.

After Forreston’s defense held, they would score 10 plays later, making it 16-0 on a 3-yard Ethan Mulder touchdown.

“We have a couple things on defense we need to work on, but I was happy with our offense and

defense,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said.

Forreston made it 24-0 early in the second quarter on quarterback Bailey Cullor’s 2-yard run, but Hiawatha would have one more glimmer of hope.

Sophomore Matthew Korb, who later would replace Kilcullen at QB, caught a 10-yard pass for a first down. Philipp Timmerman caught another 10-yarder and the Hawks had two first downs in a row.

On the next play, Hunter Rogers grabbed an interception off a Dom Christensen tip to set up his own 34-yard rushing touchdown.

Evan Kelsey ensured the running

clock would be in effect the second half with a 61-yard touchdown with 5:35 left in the second quarter.

Kilgullen would make one more completion before being intercepted by Mulder, with Derreck Vince applying the pressure.

Rogers added another first-half touchdown for the 48-0 advantage, making it five different TD scorers for Forreston.

“Our big guys (Mitchell Heinz, Derek DeVries, Kilar Huenefeld, Sawyer Wild, Jacob Dye) are starting to come together,” said Zick if his offensive line. “They came focused and executed.”

Kelsey had 118 yards on 7 carries to lead the Cardinals. Rogers and Christensen both got six totes for 79 and 77 yards. On defense, Mulder, Vince and Garett Badertscher tied for honors with six tackles.

One negative for Forreston were 10 penalties for 80 yards. This after one of its best seasons in recent memory for relatively penalty-free games.

“We’ve been harping on that all year,” Zick said.

Forreston (8-2) travels to Milledgeville (10-0) for a first-ever playoff match-up between the two teams.

Game time is 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

Under Keneway, the Hiawatha program made it three winning seasons in a row, finishing the year at 6-4.

CROSS COUNTRY SECTIONAL

Rock Falls wins sectionals at Oregon Park West Oregon’s Watters misses state bid

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com For the Rock Falls girls cross-country team, it was nice to repeat as 1A sectional champs.

However, what really is on the mind of each team member and coach Mark Truesdell is what will take place this week at Detweiller Park in Peoria, site of the IHSA state meet.

“We’re confident,” Truesdell said.

“We’re all set up for November.

We’ve been scuffling all year. It’s time to get that gunk out and get this roadster going.”

Rock Falls made a big step in that direction with a decisive win over

long-time power Winnebago, finishing ahead 47-61.

With its dominating performance at Oregon’s Park West, Rock Falls will head to the state meet as one of the favorites to claim the championship.

Sophomore Karlie Hey of Newman held off rival Natalia Martino of Winnebago to claim the individual title with a time of 18:53, falling at the finish line.

Last year, Hey burst onto the state scene with a fifth-place at Peoria. Her main competition will be defending champ Emma Argo of Eureka.

Leah Watters of Oregon, who advanced downstate last year, had the unfortunate fate of being the last girl out of individual qualification.

If there’s any consolation, her time of 21:13 was nine seconds behind the final individual qualifier, unlike the

boys race which had a .04 differential.

“It’s frustrating to be so close and miss,” Oregon coach Tim Gipper said. “It will be a lesson for next year and what she needs to do and where she needs to go.”

The Hawks finished a respectable 11th out of the 21 teams. Other girls in the top 100 were Faith Marquardt, Cynthia Nyderek, Breanna DeHaan, Kaitlyn Ramirez and Lydia Cermak.

“It was another good season for us. This is the first time since I’ve been coaching that we’ve advanced both the boys and girls team to the sectional.” Gipper said.

Boys Race Rock Falls not only qualified for the IHSA state meet, but comfortably

won the team title with 105 points, compared to 116 for Pontiac and 117 for Seneca.

Newman had come into the meet as the top-ranked sectional team, but struggled with the 3-4-5 scorers.

It was Newman’s seventh straight trip downstate and the Comets were aided by last year’s sectional champ Rockford Christian being bumped up to 2A. Christopher Collett, a 2-time allstater from Seneca, easily outdistanced the field with a time of 15:54.

It was Smith of RF and Hafner engaging in spirited battle for second.

Oregon was 20th with 497 points, finishing just ahead of last-place Peru-St. Bede. Competing were Mike Bower (67th), Andrew Harshman (69th), Connor Harshman (128th) Kenny Bower (141st) and Charles Gatz (157th).

geville proved to be unfounded. It made a little bit of sense until the Missiles exploded for 38 unanswered points after trailing 22-18.

The one consolation was accurately pegging Kirkland-Hiawatha as an unworthy opponent for Forreston.

The 48-0 score was one of many lopsided games that were over at half, including EPC 51-6, Le-Win 56-6, Sterling Newman 35-0 and Ottawa Marquette 34-0 – all halftime scores.

How one-sided was the Forreston-Kirkland game? As I walked both sidelines, I counted 20 cheerleaders for the Cardinals compared to only three for Kirkland.

What a difference in fan base, enthusiasm, roster depth and community involvement between the two sides.

Forreston is at such a higher level with its program, as had been the

case in recent years against playoff opponents like Luther North, Salt Fork, Hope Academy, Hebron, and North Shore.

Bring on more 8-man football teams as a way to level the playing field, as Hebron and North Shore went to. With the problem Kirkland was having filling guys in, they may want to consider it, along with other small schools that didn’t even make the playoffs.

On a Weird Note...

I was in Utah during the first week of their football playoffs and learned of a very weird procedure for breaking playoff tie breakers.

Normally, it is done by a mid-week play-in game, like the NCAA does for March Madness.

However, if three teams are tied, there is a coin flip. The two losers of the coin flip play the first half against each other.

The winner of the first half then plays the second half against the third team for the right to advance.

Soppe was of the girls brought in to replace senior Sophia Heisler, who broke her foot at the end of the regular season.

“Sometimes it just isn’t your night,” Williams said. “It was extremely disappointing, but you play best of three for a reason. You have to be resilient and come back ready for game two.”

In game two, Erdmann started where she left off in the first game with three kills for an early 3-0 lead.

The Cardinals continued to apply pressure, with Houston pounding in another three kills and Brycelynn Smith an ace for the 13-7 lead.

“We came out ready to play and that was great to see,” Williams said.

A kill, ace by Soppe and a return error gave Galena its first tie at

16-16. The Pirates took an 18-17 lead on two diving saves to save the point. Houston then tied it back up.

With the score 18-18 and tension in the Riverdale gym ratcheted up, even the officials must have felt it, as the next call was disputed. After consulting among themselves, the point was ruled in favor of Galena.

“There was a touch on the ball, which should have been our point,” said Williams, echoing exactly what the Cardinal fan base was exhorting.

How about the showing by the NUIC in regional volleyball play?

Durand, Eastland and Stockton won in 1A and Forreston, Le-Win and West Carroll represented 2A at the Riverdale sectional.

The Big Northern, including league champ Rock Falls, was shut out in 2A and 3A regional action.

Overall, is it safe to say that the smaller-enrollment conference is better than the bigger one?

“The girls have worked extremely hard and have really helped improve our program. I’ve seen a lot of great volleyball this season and even though it didn’t end the way we wanted, I am glad that I had the opportunity to coach them,” Williams said

arning: Whatever is written in this column is my opinion and may not always reflect the truth. Case in point – my analysis last week of the IHSA football playoffs.

For starters, I gave too much credence to Aurora Christian in 1A and how they might be the team to beat.

Well, this so-called suburban juggernaut barely won its first game 26-20 over Annawan-Wethersfield.

That result doesn’t smack of prowess.

Regarding Byron’s chances, I felt Rock Island Alleman from the higher enrollment Western Big-6 may give them a game and Chicago public league team Chicago Dunbar might present problems down the road. Wrong on both accounts.

No. 2 seed Dunbar lost to 15th seed Herscher, and I was able to witness Alleman giving up 50 points to a Byron team that probably could have scored more and look to have an unimpeded path to the state finals.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Oct. 23 In the afternoon, the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s office received a phone call in which the caller made threatening statements about employees at the judicial center, specifically the state’s attorney’s office and judges.

Additional security measures where enacted on the morning of Oct. 24 until the caller could be identified and located.

Jason L. Churchill, 50, of Mt. Morris, was taken into custody at 9:35 a.m. and was subsequently arrested for disorderly conduct and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Gary Adams, 58, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was jailed in lieu of $1,750 bond pending a court appearance.

Thomas Stiles, 26, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for criminal damage to government property, more than $500. He was jailed in lieu of $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 26.

was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Oct. 24 Alyssa D. Poff, 26, of Polo, was arrested for an outstanding Ogle County warrant for no valid registration. She posted the $5,000 (10%) bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 16.
