Fire destroys longtime Polo business Sparks from a grinder blamed for blaze

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Sparks from a grinder started a fire that destroyed a longtime Polo business Monday morning.

Polo Fire Chief Tony Karrow said Dambman Lawn Mower Hospital, 605 S. Congress Ave., was completely engulfed by flames when firefighters arrived on the scene shortly before 11 a.m.

“Fire was rolling out the front, and big black smoke was high in the air,” he said. “They could see the smoke from Byron and Dixon. We were able to keep the fire from getting to the garage and house to the north and the house to the south.”

Former owner Gene Dambman safely escaped from the burning building where he was working when the fire began around 10:48 a.m.

The business is owned by Dambman’s son Jared.

Karrow said the fire was accidental, and a representative from the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office was on the scene late Monday afternoon to help determine the cause.

Firefighters from several area departments worked until around 4 p.m. to extinguish the fire.

“Several hot spots popped up,” Karrow said.

Dambmans have sold and serviced lawn mowers at the location since 1977.

Polo firefighters were assisted by the Mt. Morris, Oregon, Byron, Stillman Valley, Lanark, Milledgeville, Dixon City, Sterling, and Franklin Grove Fire Departments, as well as Advance and

ATS ambulances.

A second fire was reported in mid-afternoon while firefighters were still at the Dambman fire.

Karrow said the resident of a house approximately two blocks south on Congress Avenue reported flames coming from a faulty outlet.

He said firefighters made sure the fire was out and little damage was done.

The Rosko Family and Friends are hosting a candlelight vigil in memorial of the passing of Maggie and Amos Meyer. October 19th, 2018 marks the 2nd anniversary of the loss of these two precious souls.

Candles and holders will be provided as we gather as a community to remember and reflect upon the lives of Maggie and Amos.

Oregon street department employees to retire Nov. 2

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Two longtime Oregon Street Department employees will end their careers early next month, while another has just started his.

Street superintendent Mike Bower and employee Ray Hawn are retiring Nov. 2 with more than 60 years of experience between them.

Terry Plemmons Jr. will take over for Bowers and began learning the ropes on Oct. 9.

An open house for Bowers and Hawn will be held on Thursday, Nov. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Oregon City Hall.

Although he has enjoyed his job, Bowers said his retirement will give him more time to spend with his family.

“I’m looking forward to making plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas — and just be able to feel like I’m not on call 24/7,” he said.

Bowers said he has seen may changes in the more than 35 years he has served the city.

“When I started, office materials

were pens, pads, and pencils that salesmen left,” he said with a chuckle. “Now we have computers and two file cabinets full of records. We’ve gone from the horse and buggy to the space shuttle.”

Bowers remembered that early in his career each spring street department employees drove around the city to see which streets were the worst and those got fixed.

When the late Jim Lauer was Street Commissioner, he implemented a five-year rotation for maintaining the streets.

“The majority of our time then was spent patching potholes,” Bowers said. “That has been eliminated with the regular maintenance.”

ADA requirements and increasing regulations have also changed how the street department operates.

“Sometimes we spend more time on paperwork than on the actual work,” he said.

Bowers said he has enjoyed a good working relationship with city officials.

“I always felt like I had great support from all the [city] councils I

Bowers is spending the last couple of weeks on the job working with Plemmons and plans to be available after he’s retired.

“I want to help with the transition,” he said. “People welcomed me and gave me a chance to grow in the department. I hope to do the same for Terry.”

Work slated to start this week on South Sixth Street

Construction on the jail is expected to begin April 1 and be completed in 20 months.

Ciesiel said Tuesday that upgrades of several surrounding streets will be done next year at the same time as the jail construction.

The street work will include repaving and new curbs, gutters, and sidewalks for one block of South Fifth Street, two blocks of Jefferson, and one block of South Sixth Street.

In another matter, the board approved two changes to the vehicle impound ordinance.

Tow fees were hiked from $350 to $500, and the time a towed vehicle is stored before being declared abandoned was decreased from 35 days to 10 days.

Sheriff Brian VanVickle said the fee increase brings the county into line with what municipalities are already charging.

He said the decrease in storage

Construction will begin this week on infrastructure for Ogle County’s new jail.

County engineer Jeremy Ciesiel told the Ogle County Board Tuesday evening that work would begin Thursday or Friday on South Sixth Street in Oregon to relocate water and sanitary sewer mains.

He said Martin & Company has already brought equipment and materials for the project to the site.

The new water main will run along Jefferson Street and the sewer line will flow to the south, away from the new building which will be located in the 100 block of South Sixth Street across from the judicial center.

Ciesiel said the work is expected to take approximately two weeks.

The county board approved the design plan Sept. 25 for the $25.5 million jail which will be called the Ogle County Judicial Center Annex.

The new building will face Washington Street (Ill. 64).

One block of South Sixth Street will be closed to allow a large sally port and enclosed passageway to connect the jail and the judicial center for the secure transfer of inmates into the jail, as well as from the jail

Ogle County Republican announced end of WWI Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The 1918 Ogle County Republican newspaper published 100 years ago was owned and published by Tim Lander’s father E. D. Landers and grandfather Ziba Landers.

Originally Ziba, who was from Creston, purchased the newspaper from Evan L. Reed in 1895.

The big event that year was the Nov. 14 newspaper announcing the “Great Rejoicing as World’s War Ends. Glad News of Peace Reached Oregon at 2:30 o’clock Monday Morning and hundreds of citizens hastened to make Merry.”

“The city of Oregon celebrated the peace news twice. The United Press gave out the news that the armistice was signed Thursday, Nov. 7th and we gladly accepted it as true and the city cut loose and celebrated the occasion in a rain storm.

were notified last Thursday that their son Shirley Tilton was killed in action on the battle front in France on November 5th,” the newspaper read.

Shirley had been called to Camp Grant in Rockford for training about May 1.

Six weeks later the middle of June he was hurried across the ocean and was soon on the battle line.

He had been gassed and was in the hospital close to two months.

The next news received was concerning his death in action.

He was the first soldier from Oregon to have made the supreme sacrifice in the line of battle.

He came to Oregon with his parents in 1903. It was said he never saw his parents after he left for Camp Grant in Rockford.

Shirley was buried in Romaine, France. It took three long years until his body was removed and finally came to rest in Washington Grove Cemetery.

Barnes’ uncle was a minister for the Four Square church in Oregon when he and his family came from Decatur to visit his uncle and aunt in Oregon, beginning in 1945.

At 17 in 1946, Barnes hitchhiked to Oregon as he had met a pretty redhead named Barbara Taft in 1945.

OCHS Class of 1958 holds reunion Plans for the Oregon Community High School Class of 1958 to share their 60th class reunion with the Autumn on Parade weekend looked like a sure winner.

Starting on Friday night (Oct. 5) several members of the ’58 team joined classmate and musical host Ron Colson at the Mt. Morris Moose for First Fridays Open Stage and a celebration of the funding victory for Black Hawk Statue.

A major problem was brewing for Saturday, Oct. 6 when Leonard

Bruns of the classes’ catering provider, Powerhouse Bar-B-Q, was knocked out of commission with a serious (is there any other kind?) stroke.

When the class gathered at Oregon’s Cork & Tap at noon on Saturday a barbecue feast awaited them Joyce Bruns and son James, who flew in from Oklahoma, kept up their schedule of visits to the hospital and still prepared the anticipated feast for the class reunion.

The reunion was a roaring success and the Class of ’58 expresses

their appreciation to the Powerhouse Bar-B-Q Team for service above and beyond the call of duty.

Best of all Leonard is making a speedy recovery and should be home by the time this story “hits the street.”

In observing that after 60 years, the five-year interval between reunions might be a bit much, it was decided to pick a month each year to join the Depot’s last-Saturday-morning-of-the-month historic presentation followed by a class reunion.

Field trip to study local geology to begin at Castle Rock Oct. 28 Join Northwest Illinois Audubon on a visit to Castle Rock State Park on Sunday, Oct. 28 to view and learn about bedrock geology of northwest Illinois.

The field trip starts at 1 p.m. at the Castle Rock scenic overlook, about a mile south Oregon on Illinois 2.

The Mt. Morris Moose Family Center will once again host the Songwriters Open Mic on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m.

The event is held the third Friday of each month and others are scheduled for Nov. 16, and a Christmas Finale on Dec. 21 will round out the 2018 schedule.

The Songwriters Open Mic, produced by Jerry Tice of the Mountain Grass Band and co-hosted by performer Ruth Ann Lillstrom, will showcase original musical or lyrical compositions performed by the creating artist with no covers and no accompanist, All material must be family friendly.

A new feature, Tips on Tunes, offering assistance on chord progression, arrangements, and presentation, will be a feature of this month’s show.

Each performer gets two songs and no more than 10 minutes.

With his team trailing 1-0 to Stillman Valley at halftime of the Byron Regional, Oregon coach Seger Larson could be heard loud and far exhorting the Hawks.

It wasn’t until the game’s final minutes that the Hawks took his words to heart and began to attack the Stillman net.

A flurry of three shots within seconds of each other nearly tied the score with 5 minutes remaining, but the Cardinals moved on to the sectional with a 1A Byron Regional title by the same 1-0 score on Oct. 12.

“We should have played like that the whole second half,” Larson said.

“Stillman Valley made runs and we didn’t. There was no sense of urgency on our part to score until it was too late.”

Eli Rufer had the best chance of the three shots, but Cardinal goalkeeper Kilton Rauman snagged the ball before it snuck in. With its defense up, Oregon continued to put the pressure on, but could not come up with the game-tying score in the fast-paced final minutes.

Stillman Valley scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 6:45 mark of the first half. After the Hawks lost the ball on offense and Stillman booted it deep, Adam Wenberg got behind the Hawk defense and beat goalkeeper Owen Ketter to the ball.

In a 1-on-1 situation, Wenberg controlled the ball from Luke Robert and drilled a shot past the out-of-position Ketter.

“I got a quick touch pass and was able to get my other foot on it,” Wenberg said.

From Oregon’s perspective, Wenberg never should have been in position for the easy score. Seconds before, it appeared the Hawks had possession without any threat of giving it up.

“It was a miscommunication on defense – a 100 percent lapse,” Larson said. “The real problem was our defense got cocky and pushed up.

But Stillman Valley is faster than us.”

With 4:35 left in the half, Josh Sitze tried an acrobatic reverse/ upside down kick that didn’t come close, but was artistic to see. The real highlight of the contest for Oregon (6-14-3) was Ketter making a diving stop of a Stillman penalty kick by Wenberg in the second half.

Ketter, a sophomore, made several key stops on Stillman scoring attempts, including a wide-open attempt by Robert in the second half.

“It was a decent game with a lot of back and forth,” Stillman Valley coach Brian Frank said. “We created lots of opportunities.”

Oregon, which lost to Stillman 4-1 earlier in the season, played respectively on defense in holding its foe to one goal.

“We were playing aggressively, but not with runs. We wanted the ball in front of us, but not the next ball,” Larson said. “Nobody had any real good chances until their fast break.”

Until the final minutes, Oregon never had any decent shot-on-goal attempts, as the Cardinals defense always stiffened up. Defender Brigham Finch popped a ball from the midfield stripe and saw it go off a Stillman player toward the goal.

Against Byron on Tuesday, a shot caromed off a Tiger player and went in. Not this time, but Finch’s shot did create a little excitement.

Park West hosted BNC Cross Country Meet

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Smooth and silky. Those words could be used to describe Colin Grady of Dixon, as he gracefully ran to the individual title of the Big Northern conference cross-country meet on Oct. 13.

“Colin looked awesome,” Dixon coach Evan Thorpe said. “He’s poised to be in the leader pack downstate.”

Grady made it look too easy, cruising along the 3-mile Park West course as if he was out for a leisurely jog. His time of 16:35 beat out the 16:53 posted by Dawson Smith of Rock Falls.

“I was told to put him away the last half mile,” Grady said. “I was very happy, considering how super windy it was and all the turns on this course.”

Grady led a huge procession of purple and while-striped runners to a repeat conference title. Last year, co-favorite Rockford Christian sat out its varsity.

Ranked No. 3 in 2A, Dixon is at full strength and in position to contend for a state trophy downstate.

Junior Christian Seagren was fourth with a 17:09 clocking. All seven Dixon runners made all-conference. The others were Andrew Lohse (8th), Cadyn Grafton (11th), Aidan Johnson (14th) and Thomas Sitter (21st).

Oregon scored 217 points and took last out of the nine teams with a full line-up. Michael Bower (19:05) was 30th, Andrew Harshman (19:11) 31st, Conner Harshman (20:42) 46th, Kenney Bower (21:28) 52nd and Isaac Brooks (23:39) 63rd.

Girls Race With how close the finish of the Big Northern girls cross-country meet between Dixon, Rock Falls and Winnebago was forecast to be, parents and coaches were kept busy counting bodies coming through the chute.

In what amounted to a confusing exercise in futility for those amateur mathematicians, nobody really knew the final outcome until the computer-generated results had the numbers 48-49-50.

Decided by the narrowest 3-team margin in the history of the meet, it was Rock Falls claiming the magic point total of 48, with Winnebago (49) and Dixon (50) next.

“When it was done, we thought we were third,” Bailee Fortney said.

“Before the meet, our coach said a

win would mean a lot because we had never won conference before.”

Fortney finished second to individual champ Natalia Martino of Winnebago.

The pair ran together for the first half mile before Martino surged on the hill portion of the course and had a 20-meter lead for the next two miles. On the last stretch of the race, Fortney made a move and closed to within five meters.

Sensing someone at her back, Martino pulled away and claimed the title, 19:16-19:21. When asked what made the difference in the team race, Fortney had praise for a fellow runner.

Winnebago had four runners in the top 12, but their fifth and final scorer was 21st, hampering its chances. Alex Gomez came in at seventh (20:27), Lippens 11th (20:49), Bry Ganther 13th (21:05) and Erin Porter 15th (21:15) for the Rockets.

Had the meet come to a tie, Rock Falls still would have won due to No. 6 runner Whitney Schwindenhammer finishing ahead of the No. 6s from ‘Bago and Dixon. She also claimed all-conference honors for being top 25, as did Leah Watters of Oregon.

Dixon, which was missing top runner Nicquelette Fazekas due to a injury, got a third from Jade Miller and fourth from Paige Stees.

Besides Martino and Fortney, they were the only other competitors to break 20 minutes in the cold and windy conditions at Park West.

Taylor Renkes (20:38), Grace Johnson (21:26) and Taylor Hills (21:28) were top 20 finishers.

Johnson, one of four freshmen from last year’s state-qualifying team, was out with a toe abducter muscle, as injuries have plagued Dixon girls cross country program for quite some time.

Even though his team won, RF coach Mark Truesdell took it as a bittersweet experience.

“I should be happy, but this a process - a grind,” Truesdell said.

“Maybe I’m perpetually grumpy.”

Dixon and Rock Falls have hopes of returning to the 1A and 2A state meets with regionals beginning this Saturday.

Oregon was seventh out of the eight teams with scoring line-ups.

Backing up Watters were scorers Cynthia Nyderek (23:10) in 31st, Katlyn Ramirez (23:29) 35th, Faith Marquardt (23:38) 37th and Katelyn Byerly (24:09) 38th.

It was a close for fifth through seventh, as Byron had 151, G-K 160 and the Hawks 161.

Oregon wins in two; next up, regional at Le-Win on Oct. 23

Regionals Next Week Oregon begins post-season play next week at the Lena-Winslow 2A Regional. The Hawks play on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of Monday’s match between Daktota and South Beloit.

The regional championship is Thursday at 6 p.m. The winner advances to the Riverdale Sectional on Monday, Oct. 29 to play the winner of the Orion Regional.

Oregon rolled to a two-game win over North Boone in Big Northern Conference action to cap off its last home game on Senior Night.

The Hawks, 7-2 in conference play and 20-8 overall, dispatched the Lady Vikings (1-8, 5-22) in two games, 25-18, 25-7.

Bailey Nelson led Oregon’s offense with eight kills and one ace. McKenna Sadler recored 13 digs and an ace while Jasmine Herbst notched 15 assists, two aces, and three kills, Oregon also won the JV game 25-7, 25-3 and the Fresh-Soph game 25-13, 25-9.

On Oct. 11, Oregon dispatched of Genoa-Kingston in another 25-7 and 25-18 romp.

With an imaginative cheering section replete with male classmates adorned as construction workers, the girls responded by scoring early and often.

The Hawks peeled off 10 straight points to close game one out.

“I think that is the most points we have won by this year,” Oregon coach Faith McNamee said. “It was nice to see the enthusiasm in the stands.”

Janae Bothe, Bailey Nelson and Jasmine Herbst all had kills to stake Oregon to an early 8-3 lead. Then, G-K ran into difficulty in its return game.

Sophomore Ella Martin made it 15-6 on a kill and then ran the table as server, with the score ballooning from 16-7 to 25-7.

She had two aces in that segment,

along with two kill by Nelson and one by Abi Hopkins.

In the second game, G-K took a 10-5 lead. Madison Peters had eight straight service points for the Cogs before her team was called for palming the ball.

“In the second game, we changed the line-up,” McNamee said. “The chemistry and communication was not the same.”

That was evident in several balls not being returned because of that lack of communication. Oregon did reel off six straight points to draw even, as the Cogs struggled to return the ball.

After a Hawk out-of-bounds shot and a couple of non-returns, G-K closed to withing 17-17.

“We came out more competitive in the second game,” G-K coach Keith Foster. “The problem we had is Oregon is bigger across the net. They hit the ball with pace and was able to move to it.”

Hopkins took the serve with the score tied 18-18. Janae Bothe gave the Hawks the lead for good with a kill and a resounding block.

Nelson added her 9th and 10th kills, the latter after a one-handed dig by Hopkins. McKenna Sadler led Oregon with 11 digs.

“We made a lot of hustle plays,” McNamee said.

Hawks fall to North Boone’s Vikings 48-6 Oregon hosts winless Mendota on Oct. 19 at Landers-Loomis

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com It was the Britton Morris show at North Boone, as the Viking football team scored a 46-6 win over Oregon on Oct. 12.

The star quarterback made one play after another in the air or with his feet in moving his team to 6-2 in conference play.

“He’s quite a player – the best thrower in the area,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said. “We had good coverage, but he found the pocket and put that ball in the exact spot.”

It was a kick off return on the first play of the game that gave NB a quick 7-0 lead. The Hawks use several sophomores for kick coverage and they had been doing a solid job this year.

Moments later, Oregon got right back into the contest on a long touchdown run by Jake Milliman.

“He’s a good chance of pace compared to our power game. He can make quick cuts and is elusive,”

Schneiderman said.

The final outcome was misleading when looking at the statistics.

Oregon gained more than 300 yards rushing, but other than the 75-yard run by Milliman, they were unable to convert those yards into points.

A key example of this occurred midway through the second quarter. Oregon trailed 21-6, but moved inside the NB 10-yard line.

Unfortunately, a holding penalty stymied the drive and Oregon turned the ball over on downs.

“We moved the ball, but couldn’t get it into the end zone,” Schneiderman said.

Losing two fumbles also hurt Oregon. In all, the Hawks fumbled five times. With Morris moving his team at will, Oregon would have had to play mistake-free to have any chance.

“Going into the game, we weren’t sure if Zach Crandall and Jake Mennen were going to be cleared to play, so we changed up our defensive scheme,” Schneiderman said.

Both were cleared on Thursday, but because of the uncertainty, the changes had already been made.

Oregon (2-6) has a great chance to close out its season against winless Mendota on Friday at Landers-Loomis Field.

“We have to come out and play hard, sustain our blocking schemes and be disciplined,” Schneiderman said.

Why is there a lack of high school officials?

If it’s not the money, is it the verbal abuse?

Lately, much as been of the shortage of game officials for high-school sports. While in Forreston recently, I asked long-time official Don Cook his take on it.

“It’s been coming for a few years and it’s really getting bad,” Cook said. “There are first-year officials working varsity games. When I started, you worked five years before you did varsity. And, it’s almost impossible to get subs.”

Still doing games at more than 70 years of age, Cook has assigned officials for various leagues.

“In football, I think we’ll have to go to some Saturday games,” he said. “I tell athletic directors to have homecoming on Saturday to split things up.”

This past year, Cook and company has put on clinics in Sterling, Forreston and Rockford with the hopes of attracting new officials.

With an average age of 55-60 years for a referee, something has to give.

In nearly every sport other than track and cross country, finding officials has become difficult.

“I can’t say it is about (lack of) pay,” Cook said. “The Big Northern pays $110 for two games.”

Why have we reached this point and what does it mean for interscholastic sports?

The number one factor is abuse officials have taken, as society has become less and less respectful of authority figures.

In a disgusting manner, parents and coaches are acting like little brats not getting their way. They take out their frustration on the poor officials, which perpetuates the

problem. Some of these newer guys refuse to take it and quit.

Can you blame them?

“Basketball and softball are tough,” said Cook speaking from experience. “It used to be just dads that complained. Now, mothers and everybody have played it and think they know more than the officials.”

Another major factor is a general shortage of workers. All over the country, jobs go begging for lack of interested workers.

So, why should officiating be any different? Along those same lines, employers have told me that the new work force is much ‘softer’ than previous generations.

That ‘softness’ doesn’t translate very well for someone under the microscope as a sports official.

High school sports don’t mean as much to this generation as it did to previous ones. Some don’t even know who’s in their conference or care how other teams in the area or state are doing.

Decades ago, kids had a much keener interest in high school sports

and that certainly was a consideration in wanting to maintain contact by becoming officials.

Here’s something else to consider: When guys like Don Cook started 50 years ago, it was primarily boys football, baseball, basketball, cross country, track and wrestling.

Since then, other sports like soccer have emerged. Then, if you add in girls sports, the workload is about double of what it used to.

What is the answer?

Nobody seems to know. We have seen the effect already with games being rescheduled, short-handed crews and a weaker product.

Maybe the only hope is to offer support, rather than criticizing. But, for that to happen, there must be a change of heart inside of a person.

The IHSA has had the Add A Tude sports mascot for over 20 years and that promotion has done little for sportsmanship.

Yes, it must start with our own spiritual condition, not with a mascot or being reminded to behave.

OBITUARY ELEANORE L. FINFROCK Eleanore Lucille Finfrock, 94, of Mt. Morris died on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home with her family by her side.

Eleanore was born on Aug. 6, 1924 in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of J. Henry Edward and Estella (Rutt) Frerichs.

She graduated from Davenport High School in the Class of 1943.

Eleanore married John W. Finfrock on October 12, 1942 in LaGrange, Missouri, He preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 2002.

Davis Junction man charged with sexual assault A Davis Junction man has been charged with predatory criminal sexual assault following an investigation by the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department.

Robert A. Hardt, 39, of Davis Junction, was arrested on Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. for the Class X felony following an investigation by Ogle County detectives that began in September.

Hardt is alleged to have sexual contact with a minor who was 13 or younger in June and September, court documents indicate.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and appeared before Ogle County Associate Circuit Judge John Redington on Oct. 10 via closed circuit television.

He was represented by Ogle County

Public Defender Dennis Riley.

Redington found that probable cause existed and set Hardt’s bond at $250,000 (10%) adding the condition that he have no contact with the victim and anyone else under the age of 18.

Hardt’s preliminary hearing has been set for Oct. 31.

a utility pole. Deputies learned that Berg had been traveling northbound on Illinois 2 when she lost control and entered the east ditch where her vehicle struck the utility pole and came to rest.

Berg refused medical treatment from the Byron Ambulance at the scene.

As a result of the damage to the pole, power lines fell into the roadway which caused the northbound lane of Illinois 2 between Luther Drive in Byron and Ashelford Drive north of Byron to be closed to traffic until 8:15 p.m. when Com Ed was able to replace the pole and lines.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Byron Police Department, the Byron Fire Department, the Byron Ambulance, and IDOT, who assisted with traffic control.

Oct. 12 At 4:58 a.m., deputies responded to the Area of Stone Hill Road and Brick Road, northeast of Oregon for an abandoned vehicle in the roadway. Badreddine Boutira, 33, of Miami, Florida, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for an over registered weight violation. Boutira posted $100 bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. Boutira is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 29.

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Captain Matthew Hodgdon announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for September.

Troopers issued 388 citations, 446 written warnings, and made 29 criminal arrests during the month.

Speeding accounted for 199 citations, 20 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 16 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 17 traffic crashes, assisted 70 motorists, and conducted 152 commercial vehicle inspections, 16 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. Nine arrests were made for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, had one traffic crash fatality in September.

The following activities were also reported.

Plane lands in cornfield Oct. 11 Law enforcement officials received a report at 1:30 p.m. that an airplane landed in a cornfield in the southwest corner of Creston and Mulford Roads.

The airplane was a 1950 North American T-28A. The pilot and passenger took off from Tulsa, Oklahoma and were en route to Wonder Lake when they reportedly lost power and made an emergency landing in the cornfield.

No one was injured, and the plane was not damaged.

Commander reports September enforcement figures

Haldane Road. Seals was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Jessinia F. Loyola, 27, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for not having a driver’s license. Loyola posted the $2,000 (10%) bond and was released. Loyola is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 2.

Joseph A. Myers, 21, of Davis Junction, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Myers posted $323 as a full cash bond and was released with no further court date needed.

Jose G. Sanchez-Teoquiz, 36, of South Elgin, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for a petition to revoke. He posted $1,500 (10%) bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 2.

Shank was transported to the Ogle County Jail, these violations occurred in the 400 block of Monroe Street.

Jeremy J. Hillary, 42, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 9:22 p.m. for operating a vehicle in violation of the tinted front side windows law. This violation occurred in the 600 block of Gale Street.

At 12:15 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 300

block of Jefferson Street involving a 2013 Hyundai driven by Sara J. Waeffler, 29, of Dixon, and a 2012 Jeep driven by Shauna M. Fiser, 35, of Mt. Morris. Waeffler was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Lukas A.H. Hurst, 19, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 11:25 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.
