Ex-husband/father pleads not guilty to 2016 deaths of Byron mother and son

BY LINDSEY SALVATELLI lsalvatelli@saukvalley.com The father of a child who died in a Byron house fire 3 years ago has pleaded not guilty to charges he killed his ex-wife and their 3-year-old son and set their house on fire.

Margaret “Maggie” Meyer, 31, was found dead on a couch on the first floor of her burning home at 2020 N. Silverthorn Drive on Oct. 19, 2016, and her 3-year-old son, Amos, was pronounced dead a short time later at a Rockford hospital.

Duane “D.C.” Meyer, 37, of Byron, who was arrested at 6 a.m. Oct. 9 was indicted by an Ogle County grand jury on four counts of first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said in a news conference on Oct. 9.

At the time of his arrest, he also had a loaded firearm and was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, VanVickle said. Meyer, who is being held on $10 million bond, was scheduled to have a bond reduction hearing Oct. 16. Rockford attorney Christopher A. DeRango is

Meyer reported the fire, around 6:40 a.m. that morning. He told officials he was there to pick up his son. The couple had divorced about a month earlier. Ogle County Court records show she filed for the dissolution in November 2014 and the divorce was granted on Sept. 8, 2016.

When firefighters arrived, smoke alarms were sounding, the house was filled with heavy smoke, and Meyer and a Byron police officer were on the lawn performing CPR on Amos, who had been in an upstairs bedroom.

Amos and his father were taken to

then-Rockford Memorial Hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead.

An autopsy showed he died of smoke inhalation.

Authorities have declined to reveal the cause of Maggie Meyer’s death, although they said pathologists have determined it. They also have not said how the fire started.

A representative from the State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was an arson while he was at the scene.

Maggie, the daughter of Donald and Luann Rosko, of Mt. Morris, was a teacher at the Chana Educational Center.

The Rosko family and friends are hosting a candlelight vigil in memorial of the passing of Maggie Rosko and Amos Meyer.

Oct. 19, 2019 marks the third anniversary of their deaths in a Byron fire. The deaths were ruled homicides.

The vigil will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 6:30-8 p.m. on the Ogle County Courthouse Square in Oregon. Candles and holders will be provided.

Law enforcement officials are still working to solve the arson and double homicide three years ago that

took the lives of the young Byron mother and her 3-year-old son.

The vigil will be held outdoors, so participants are asked to dress for the weather. It is requested that those joining the vigil wear green, one of Maggie and Amos’s favorite colors.

If you are unable to attend, please join the online “Light a Candle” memorial. Light a candle where you are and share it on the Justice for Maggie and Amos Facebook page.

Parking will be available in the city’s public parking lots.

The BMRC Club voted to make Don an Honorary Member of the club in recognition for his gifts.

“At our monthly meeting on Oct. 8 refreshments were served and we presented Don with an official vest with his name on it.” said Bill Kalbfus, club member. “Don and Freda delighted the members with stories of their train travels around the world and his time in the House of Representatives.”

Tree falls on truck as homeowner is in garage Half of large maple tree comes crashing down on pick up

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com An Arizona man escaped injury on a windy Saturday afternoon when half of a large tree came crashing down, crushing a pickup truck as it sat in the home’s driveway.

Dereck Mast, who owns the home at 411 S. Fourth Street in Oregon, has been hard at work renovating the two-story structure. He was busy cleaning up Saturday afternoon after digging up old bottles below the floor of the detached garage when he heard a loud crack outside.

“All of a sudden I heard a crack and I went outside of the garage and all the leaves were raining down. It was surreal,” he said. “ I went to go move the rental truck that was in the driveway, but it was just raining green all over. I ran back into the garage and just covered up inside. My heart was racing.”

When the noise ended, Mast looked back outside and saw that half of the large maple tree that used to stand on the city-owned terrace, just south of his home, had crashed down grazing a corner of the house and landing across his Dodge Ram rental pickup truck.

“I immediately called my wife and I told her was OK, but that I wanted to show her a photo of what had just happened and when she saw the photo of that big tree she freaked out,” Mast said.

Mast called Climbin’ Tough Tree Service to cut up and remove the tree.

Oregon Street Superintendent Terry Plemmons said he was notified at 3:30 p.m. that the tree had fallen.

“I think its a silver maple,” he said. “We called ComEd and because of the possible damage to the wires near the remaining part of the tree and they are planning on cutting that part down too.”

Mast is from Phoenix, Arizona and has been busy doing a complete renovation of the 1909 home which he plans on having done

by Thanksgiving. He said he was lucky the tree missed the garage.

“I was having fun finding old bottles from the 1930s and then the tree just fell,” he said.

A brisk wind and chilly temperatures met Lyle Lidholm as he cleared “the cut” on Illinois through Castle Rock State Park on Oct. 12.

The 87-year-old Korean War veteran decided a picnic table in the park’s south parking lot was a good place to rest, eat some jerky, and drink some water along his 320-mile trek to become the first person to hike the Rock River Trail.

Lidholm, a Moline native from Watertown, Wisconsin, began walking the trail Sept. 1 from Theresa, Wisconsin, near the Horicon Marsh.

The trail crosses through Wisconsin and Illinois, spanning 11 counties and 41 communities including Oregon, Dixon, Sterling and Rock Falls.

“When I read about this several years ago, I thought, ‘Wow, a trail, all the way to my hometown, Moline,’” Lidholm said. “I’m not getting any younger, so I figured September and October would be nice. I’m kind of calling it my going-home hike.”

He strolled into Sterling Monday evening.

“I thought, ‘Why don’t I make that one of my last hikes?’,” he said.

“Of course, everyone thought I was nuts.”

The Rock River Trail is relatively new, Lidholm said. After learning about people attempting to be the first to travel the trail in different modes of transportation in his local newspaper, he got the idea to be the first to walk the 320 mile trail.

And he’s doing it all without the help of GPS. The weather hasn’t deterred him, he said, although he did learn the hard way that his wet suit wasn’t so waterproof after all.

He has said he wanted to reach his destination by November, but he’s in no rush. He also expects to walk more than the 320 miles, thanks to detours he encountered along the way.

He walked off course in Rockford, for example, to get around flooding on the trail. What he thought was a trail took him to a cul-de-sac.

“The signage of this trail is practically nonexistent,” he said.

Lidholm began hiking in 1944 as

a Boy Scout. At 15, he and two of his friends decided they didn’t want to go to school, so they took off and hitch-hiked to Waverly, Ohio.

“I left my mother a note saying don’t worry about me, I’m going to go find work,” Lidholm said.

The boys eventually were found by the local police, who called their parents.

He spent the next three years at military school, and two weeks after graduation, the Korean War broke out. He served in the Marines from 1951 to 1959.

As he’s aged, his hikes have grown in distance. His first long-range trek was at 68.

Lidholm said he would like to do a coast-to-coast trek across England “as long as my legs will carry me.”

There aren’t many places he wouldn’t go, he said, except maybe India or Pakistan.

But he knows where he’s headed for now, and his plans after he reaches his destination are far less complicated.

It’s not his first or longest long-distance hike; he tackled more than 800 miles of the Appalachian Trail nearly two decades ago and journeyed the 1,200-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail about 10 years ago.

Lidholm, a retired chef, builder and craftsman, helped dismantle historic structures around Wisconsin in the 1970s to be rebuilt at Old World Wisconsin.

The miles can be accumulated over any period of time, and can be broken up in any segments. Participants keep their own records and self-report their accomplishment to receive their award patch.

The trail begins near Horicon, Wisconsin, and ends where the Rock River flows into the Mississippi River in the Quad Cities.

It offers 11 different types of trail including a history trail, birding trail and a new craft brewery and wine trail.

List of governors who followed Frank Lowden Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Illinois Governor Thomas Ford from Oregon was our eighth governor from 1842-1846.

He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in 1800, 18 years before Illinois was founded in 1818.

In 1835 he moved to a cabin on property owned by John Phelps, founder of Oregon. Two years later he moved to North Third Street in Oregon.

He served as a judge on the Illinois Supreme Court. While holding court in Ogle County, he was notified he had been nominated Governor of Illinois.

Shortly after his nomination he was elected Governor on Dec. 8, 1842.

Ford County is named after him.

Frank Lowden was the 25th Governor of Illinois, He served from 1917-1921.

Lowden was born in Sunrise Township, Minnesota in 1861. His family moved to Iowa when he was seven years old. They lived on a farm in Hardin County in poverty.

His chores on the farm took priority over school. At the age of 15 he taught school for five years. He then entered the University of Iowa.

While working at the Dexter Law Firm in Chicago he took evening courses at the Union College of Law. After admission to the bar, he practiced law in Chicago for about 20 years.

His wife, Florence, was the daughter of George Pullman, the railroad car magnate and millionaire.

In 1899, Lowden was a professor at Northwestern University in Evaston. He was elected as U.S. Representative in 1906 to fill the unexpired term of Robert R. Hitt who was deceased. He was then re-elected for succeeding terms until 1911.

From 1917 to 1921, he was the Governor of Illinois.

The Illinois Governor’s Mansion was built in 1855, 19 years after Oregon was founded.

Here are summaries of Illinois Governors following Lowden.

Gov. 26: Len Small was indicted for embezzling over a million dollars in a money laundering scheme and acquitted. He pardoned over 1000 convicted felons..

Gov. 27: Louis Emmerson faced difficulties resulting from the Great Depression. During his term the first unemployment commission was initiated.

Gov. 28: Henry Horner was the first Jewish Governor of Illinois. He was a lifetime bachelor and collected memorabilia of Abraham Lincoln now displayed at the Lincoln Museum in Springfield, Illinois.

Gov. 29: John Steele played minor league baseball. He finished Horn-

er’s term as Governor with 99 days remaining. After his short term as Governor he remained active with the American Legion.

Gov. 30: Dwight Green led Illinois during WWII. He was elected in 1941. At the end of 1941 Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. When he was reelected in 1945 he faced new challenges such as a shortage of housing for returning veterans and their families.

Gov. #31: Adlai Stevenson ran for President of the US three times being defeated twice by Eisenhower and by John Kennedy in 1960. He was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations serving from 1961 until his death in 1965 at age 65.

Gov. 32: William Stratton when elected Governor was the youngest governor in America. He was known as Billy the Kid. In 1965 he was acquitted on charges of tax evasion.

Gov. 33: Otto Kerner was convicted on 17 counts of mail fraud, conspiracy, perjury and related charges. He was sentenced to three years in judicial prison in Chicago and fined $50,000.

Gov. 34: Samuel Shapiro was born in Estonia a part of the Russian Empire. During his term of office in the Illinois House of Representatives he took a special interest in mental health.

Gov. 35: Richard Ogilvie, a wounded combat veteran, was known as the Mafia-fighting Sheriff of Cook County before becoming governor.

During his term we had the first state income tax.

Gov. 36: Dan Walker was known for his high living and pleaded guilty to bank fraud and perjury.

He served a year and a half in federal prison before he moved to San Diego.

Gov. 37: James Thompson was elected to four consecutive terms and held the office for 14 years. He was the longest serving governor in Illinois.

Gov. 38: Jim Edgar served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from 1976-1979 and as Secretary of State from 1981-1991.

He served two terms as Governor of Illinois.

Gov. 39: George Ryan was convicted of federal corruption and sent to federal prison and spent more than five years in federal prison and seven months of home confinement.

Gov. 40: Rod Blagojevich had an amateur boxing career. He was impeached and removed from office for corruption. He was convicted and sentenced to 14 years in federal prison Gov. 41: Pat Quinn earned the reputation as a reformer on the Illinois political scene, “The Coalition for Political Honesty”. That indeed was quite an undertaking.

Gov. 42: Bruce Rauner Gov. 43: J. B. Pritzger Even though we had five recent governors with questionable scrapes with the code of conduct let’s remember Governor Pat Quinn establishing “The Coalition for Political Honesty”.

Bring non-peishable food items to drop off that day too The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will be holding the second-to-last residential electronic recycling drop-off of the year on Oct. 25.

These events are held at the County Annex Building at 909 Pines Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The events are for residential electronics from Ogle County and ID’s are checked. There is a limit of seven large or bulky items per

vehicle.

Accepted items include all residential televisions, computers, computer monitors, all computer accessories, hardware, and cables, UPS systems, printers, FAX machines, copiers, laptops, cell phones, tablets, video game equipment, phone systems, radios, stereo equipment, digital clocks, VCR/ DVD players, remotes, and cable/ satellite receivers, holiday light strands, rechargeable batteries, CFL bulbs, and printer ink cartridges.

Microwave ovens are also accepted for a $5 charge.

Items that are not accepted include smoke detectors, fans, lamps, vacuum cleaners, personal hygiene items, power tools, yard tools, toys,

heaters, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, sump pumps, coffee makers, bread makers, toasters or ovens, or electric fryers.

Electronics from businesses, schools, or other institutions are not accepted at these events.

Please contact the OCSWMD for options regarding business or institutional electronic items.

The OCSWMD will also be accepting non-perishable food items at the electronics drop-off.

Items accepted include all non-expired and sealed canned foods, soup, cereal, pasta, rice, pancake mix, syrup, peanut butter, jelly, and items such as bar soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. Cash donations are also accepted.

All donated items are distributed to various Ogle County food pantries.

The food pantries in Oregon and Byron have already received donations collected by the OCSWMD during the September drop-off events.

Around 500 pounds of food items were collected during September from people dropping off their electronics.

Webster University Megan Sander of Rochelle was one of 44 students who completed a 2-day intensive training to earn a Certified Peer Educators (CPE) certification.

Sander, who studies on Webster University’s primary campus in Webster Groves, Missouri, is in the student employment peer mentor role known as Connection Leaders.

CPE Training helps peer mentors develop leadership skills to be able to successfully create and implement campus programs.

The training includes eight modules, covering the role of peer education, helping peers make a behavior change, listening skills, response and referral skills, how to take action and intervene, recognizing the role of diversity and inclusivity, and group dynamics.

Each month, staff select students who have shown persistence in academics, strength of character, and leadership to others.

Anakin Rodriguez was selected as the high school Student of the Month. He is utilizing skills that he has learned to become his own best advocate and is willing to reach out to more staff about needs and wants.

He has shown to be understanding to peers who may be having a tough time and has grown

tremendously with patience.

Elementary Student of the Month was Hayden Haye. Presented with challenges, Hayden has worked through them without losing sight of his goals.

He has put forth effort on all academics, even when he doesn’t want to! He is helpful to others in his class and is very generous and willing to share!

Rory Hammer was middle school Student of the Month. Rory has gotten out of his comfort zone and been open to new opportunities, including

learning Magic the Gathering and playing with some of the high school students during level time.

Rory has shown excellent sportsmanship in all activities and has been respectful when challenging situations arise.

Grace Turner was selected as Challenge Student of the Month. Grace has made a point of focusing on her goals this semester.

She is genuinely working on being the best version of herself and encourages those around her to be successful.

Muzzleloaders to host “Pumpkin Shoot” Oct. 20 Do you want to see a pumpkin carved with a muzzleloader?

Then mark your calendar for Sunday, Oct. 20 for the Chaplin Creek Muzzleloaders’ annual “Pumpkin Shoot.”

“We grow our own pumpkins at the range, and then line them up to see who can make a ‘face’ on the pumpkin. The public is welcome to come to Chaplin Creek Village and observe the marksmanship Oct 20,” said a club representative.

The Chaplin Creek Muzzleloaders is group of local antique and historic gun collectors that call their home Chaplin Creek Village in Franklin Grove.

Rifle Association, the Chaplin Creek Muzzle Loaders exist to “promote, support, nurture, and preserve NMLRA’s and the nation’s rich historical heritage in the sport of muzzleloading.

The club offered recreational, educational, historical, and cultural venues such as match competition, gun making and safety, historical re-enactments, exhibits, museums, libraries, and other related programs”.

Live shooting and meeting dates occur throughout the warm months of the year.

Turtle Recovery in Illinois Tuesday, Nov. 5 - Freeport Dr. Richard King, biology professor at Northern Illinois University will present

information about the Blanding’s Turtle, an endangered species limited to the northern third of Illinois at the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society monthly meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The meeting beings at 7 p.m.

King will describe how the conservation and management of this turtle species is complicated by a long lifespan and use of both wetland and upland habitats. He will also mention efforts to promote this species’ recovery.

The meeting, held at St. John United Church of Christ, 1010 Park Blvd. in Freeport, is open to everyone.

ORegon Police Chief Darin DeHaan is asking the city for just less than $22,700 to pay the upfront costs to move to a new countywide dispatch and police reporting system, at the request of Sheriff Brian VanVickle In late 2018, VanVickle began looking for a new system to replace the current “antiquated, hard-touse” system, DeHaan said.

VanVickle wants t enter into an agreement with CentralSquare by the end of the month.

“Even though I’ve been saying I can’t do this in the middle of my fiscal budget without knowing, he made that decision to move forward,” DeHaan said.

Oregon police now use two sys-

tems, one that gives officers information from dispatches and another that houses data.

The new system would marry that information, and also would move automatically information such as names and addresses into police reports. Also, officers from neighboring towns now must call to get

information from specifics records; the new system would give them all computer access.

“This is like moving from an old computer to a brand-new computer.

Technology has moved way beyond what we’re using now,” DeHaan said.

After the upfront cost, Oregon would pay $2,646 a year to use the system, DeHaan said.

Mayor Ken Williams and Commissioner Terry Schuster noted the need for an agreement to ensure that the cost would not change. The paperwork will be presented at the next meeting.

Class on succulents will benefit Oregon P.E.O. Chapter Tyler Hagemann, horticulturist at Merlin’s, will be at Cork N’ Tap on Thursday, Nov. 7 to present a class on succulents, their care, and propagation of succulents.

71st Halloween Parade & Costume Contest Oct. 31

The 71st annual Halloween Parade & Costume Contest sponsored by the Oregon Knights of Columbus will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31 at the Oregon Coliseum.

The parade begins at 4:30 p.m. and will form on the north side of the Coliseum.

Led by the Oregon Police and Fire Departments, the parade will go south on Fifth Street to Jefferson Street, east on Jefferson to Third Street, north on Third to Franklin and then west back to the Coliseum.

Costume judging will be inside the Coliseum immediately after the parade.

Judging will be done in four categories: Class 1—ages 0 to 1, Class 2— ages 2 to 4; Class 3—ages 5 to 7; and Class 4—ages 8 and older.

Prizes will be awarded for first through fourth place in each category.

A Best of Show trophy will be presented on behalf of Kaczmarzyk Agency, Inc. for the best costume overall as selected by the judges.

County board approves zoning request for Love’s Larry Boes chosen as replacement for Kim Gouker’s board seat

BY LINDSEY SALVATELLI lsalvatelli@saukvalley.com The Ogle County Board approved a zone change for a truck stop, gas station that will stand on the corner of Interstate 39 and Route 72.

Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores, Inc., purchased the southeast corner of the intersection in Monroe Township with the intent of

constructing a service station with a convenience store, fast food restaurant and a tire service shop.

The board unanimously approved the zone change request during its Oct. 15 meeting at Focus House, nortth of Rochelle.

Board member Thomas Smith said he welcomed the business. He said Love’s representative Chad Bruner provided presentations that were “unbelievable.”

Smith said there were some complaints about the business causing an increase in traffic, but he doesn’t think it would make a different from the typical traffic disturbances that occurs along the route because it’s “there now.”

“When 39 gets blocked, they get off 72 and they take all those trucks and they bring them over to 251. They bring them down and they bring them back. The traffic is there when it happens,” he said.

Locals have another route they take when traffic is rerouted through the area, he said.

Zoning administrator Harry Adams Jr. said it was zoned as a special use because the land was zoned for agriculture purposes. The new zoning approved by the Board, the B-3 Restricted Interstate Highway Area Business District, is a restrictive zoning that requires a special use to allow select businesses, like truck stops and restaurants, within

the area.

In other action, Larry Boes of Byron was sworn in as the District 6 Board representative to replace the vacancy created by the death of Kim Gouker.

Gouker, 66, of Byron, died at home on Sept. 10 after a short illness.

Gouker was elected to his first term on the county board in 1996 and had served as board chairman since December of 2012.

He was instrumental in the planning and building of the Ogle County Judicial Center, the restoration of the historic Ogle County Courthouse, and the planning and building of the new Ogle County Jail that is currently under construction.

Rockets’ Dawson Smith rules at Amboy Invitational

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com It was a first-ever win for Dawson Smith of Rock Falls at the Amboy Cross Country Invitational on Monday. Smith made it look easy on the 2.9-mile loop at Shady Oaks Country Club.

“It seems like every year here, I don’t do the greatest,” Smith said.

“It’s mainly mental. With the hills, it is not my favorite course. I prefer Detweiller [in Peoria], where you have fans cheering at every corner.”

There were plenty of fans at Amboy with 26 boys teams. Monticello won the meet with 48 points and Rock Falls was eighth with 285.

Smith ran a PR of l4 minutes, 51 seconds. His PR on a regulation 3-mile course is l4.58.

“It felt nice,” he said after finishing l00 meters ahead of the next closest finisher. “I’ve had some bad juju lately and it’s good to get that off my back.”

Smith will be the favorite at the Big Northern meet this Saturday and is right on pace to contend for bigger hardware in the post season.

“He dialed in like Brayden [Hamblen] was after 4 years,” Rock Falls coach Mark Truesdell said. “He knows what he needs to do and I think he can be another Brayden downstate.”

In the girls race, it was a runner-up finish for Bailee Fortney at Amboy for the third year in a row.

The Rock Falls senior ran l7:l9 to trail the winner, Mabry Bruhn of Monticello, by l0 seconds.

“After the last downhill, she took off,” said Fortney, who collapsed upon finishing. “I knew her times had been fast all year and she could hold it in the middle. To have a shot, I need to stay close.”

That is what Fortney did the whole race to the highly-regarded freshman. At the 2-mile mark, she hung

within l0 meters of Bruhn and made one last push the final half mile, but couldn’t match Bruhn’s kick.

In a very competitive battle for the team title, it was Monticello edging Winnebago 39-44, though the Indians were without one of their best runners in Natalia Martino. Both are the favorites for a lA state title.

REGIONAL GOLF

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com After 18 holes, the race for the individual title at the Class 1A Eastland girls golf regional on Oct. 11 was a dead heat.

Two strokes into the ensuing playoff hole, Oregon’s Ava Hackman found herself past the green and down a steep slope, while Dixon’s Bella Heintzelman was in a sand trap short of and to the right of the green.

Hackman put her chip on the green; Heintzelman put hers on the fringe. Heintzelman’s putt, from about 25 feet, came within inches of the hole. Hackman’s putt, from about 10 feet, dropped right in, giving the Hawk the individual title.

“I think my driving was pretty good and my putting was especially good today,” Hackman said. “On a couple of holes, I had some where I would miss short putts, so it would

be really important for me to get the long putts.”

Both shot 93 in tough conditions at Lake Carroll. With their tee shots on the playoff hole, the 338-yard par-4 first hole with some water directly in front of the tee box, Hackman ended up in the rough to the left of the fairway. Heintzelman was in the fairway, a few feet to the right of Hackman’s ball, but Heintzelman was unable to find the green on her second shot with her 9 iron.

Hackman trailed Heintzelman by two strokes at the turn after playing the front nine in 48, but a 45 on the back nine, capped off by a long putt on 18, forced the playoff.

“I was using my choice of club better [on the back nine],” Hackman said.

Heintzelman shot a 46 on the front nine and a 47 on the back nine.

“Not happy with it at all,” she said. “Definitely some tough condi-

tions for everyone. No one played their absolute best, but the greens were super-fast. On the front, I could have played a lot better. My short game could have been better. The driver was the only thing working in the bag. The driver was very good today.”

Though the Oregon player came away with the individual title, it was Dixon taking the team crown. In addition to Heintzelman’s 93, Olivia Rick shot a 98, Charlotte McCoy carded a 100 and Nina Baratta and Lauren Fagen each shot a 119.

Paced by Hackman’s 93, Oregon qualified for the sectional as a team.

The Hawks got counting scores from Cassandra Nyderek (112), Lizzy Villareal (114), Helena Holden-Fox (115) and Lena Trampel (115) on the way to a team score of 434.

Polo took eighth as a team with a 537. Keali Wilcox had the low score for the Marcos with a 118.

Every stroke counted for the Dixon girls golf team in a nail biting 380-38l win over LaGrange Park Nazareth for the third and final state-qualifying spot at the Oregon lA sectional on Monday.

Chicago Latin won the meet with 346, followed by Arlington Heights St. Victor with 35l.

With the jubilation from the Duchesses, one would have thought they were the team champs. It didn’t matter who won really, as Dixon punched their ticket downstate and performed admirably on a difficult Silver Ridge course.

Their score was 30 strokes better than what they had at the regional at Lake Carroll, a course somewhat similar to Silver Ridge.

Besides a tough track, they had the uphill battle of going against four suburban private schools, noted for their golfing prowess. Fortunately, they held off Nazareth and fifth place Aurora Rosary.

Leading the way was Bella Heintzelman with an 86. Had Dixon missed out on state, she would have likely went as an individual in the last qualifying spot. One consolation for Nazareth was having two qualifiers with 83s and 84s.

Starting on the actual first tee, Heintzelman had a 45 on the front nine and rebounded for a 4l the final nine.

“It was a rough start, mainly because of local of focus,” Heintzelman said. “My putting saved me and my irons were pretty good.”

Oregon’s Ava Hackman bested Heintzelman at the regional, but settled for a 96 on her home course, well off the 85 needed to advance. The Hawks finished 11th out of l2 teams.

“Ava had success early in the season and then leveled out,” Hawk coach Jim Spratt said.

“She finished really well, but this is a tough sectional. As a freshman, we look for great things from her.”

The start of the meet was delayed a half hour for frost.

Stenico leads Oregon past Dixon

It was a Volley For a Cure night at the Blackhawk Center in Oregon on Oct. 10, but Dixon had no cure for dealing with Oregon senior Alice Stenico.

A foreign exchange student from Italy, Stenico had the match of her young career to lead the Hawks to a 25-12, 25-19 victory against the Duchesses in a Big Northern Conference match.

Stenico put down seven kills to lead Oregon, but it was at the service line where she really did some damage.

Using a mixture of speed and spin, Stenico amassed nine aces to either keep a rally going or thwart a Dixon uprising.

“It was working really well for myself and the team,” Stenico said. “I played really well, and I don’t really say that much because I know when I’m playing well or I’m not playing well. Tonight, I could say I played well. That was good

The Hawks once again had an answer, this time with a 7-0 surge highlighted by three Stenico aces to

put her team on the verge of victory.

Dixon kills by Carlson and Abbie Guthrie made the score 24-19 before Oregon’s Ava Wight finished things off with the last of her five kills.

“Our energy and our effort were really good tonight, which is what we’ve been focusing on the last few weeks,” Oregon coach Faith McNamee said. “We did a nice job of handling the ball, communicating and just getting the job done.”

Ella Martin had four kills and 17 assists for the Hawks, Olivia Ank-

ney had six digs, and Noon added three blocks.

For the Duchesses, Melvin (6) and Carlson (5) combined for 11 kills, and Tiana Tichler had five kills and four blocks. Kaitlynn Pfeiffer dished 14 assists, and Kayla Callison added 13 digs.

Dixon was without middle blocker Madelyn Chesley, who was ill, and it affected rotations, but head coach Bunyan Cocar noted the Hawks would have been difficult to deal with anyway.

“They didn’t hit straight down at us, but they hit roll shots and tipped the ball really well,” Cocar said.

“They ball-controlled us to death. It was a clinic in ball control, and we struggle with ball control.

“I felt like when we were in system, we could do nice things. Tiana hit for a nice percentage, and when we got the ball outside, we were OK. We just weren’t in system enough tonight, but kudos to Oregon. They played a really nice match.”

during the month of October.

Soup Supper- Oct. 24 The first event is the annual Soup Supper and Silent Auction, on Thursday, Oct. 24 from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

The soup will be served with salad, bread, and a desert. The soups this year are beef vegetable, chicken noodle, broccoli cheese, and chili.

Various items will be on display at the church for silent auction that will conclude at 630 p.m. There is no charge for the supper, but any freewill donations contributed will be shared with the

Trunk-or-Treat- Oct. 27 The second event will be the 1st annual Trunk-or-Treat, on Sunday Oct. 27 from 4-5:30 p.m. This event is intended to be a safe alternative to traditional trick or treating in that it takes place in the safer environment of the church parking lot, and folks will provide treats to the kids from the trunks of their cars.

Also available will be a bouncy playhouse, and an obstacle course for the kids to enjoy, as well as cider, donuts,

games, crafts, face-painting, and prizes.

There is no fee for the event and costumes are encouraged. In the event of rain the event will be held inside the Church and Family Life Center.

For the post season, the Oregon soccer team travels to a place you can’t get to from here – Johnsburg.

Technically, you can eventually find it, but it is very inconvenient.

The reason Oregon is headed to the hinterlands is because of the IHSA seeding formula. Richmond-Burton, which is just up the road from Johnsburg, is No. 1 sub-sectional seed and Oregon No. 2.

R-B goes to Rockford Christian instead because host RC is seed No. 4. Yes, these seeds can create more travel, but it avoids having a bunch of top teams in the same regional.

If RC wasn’t a host, Oregon would not have to go to Johnsburg. At least the reward of winning this regional is coming home to the Oregon sectional.

The Hawks’ main competition will be No. 3 seed Woodstock Marian (8-13 overall, 1-8 in conference). That record is deceiving because of the many larger suburban schools they play.

One of my favorite sporting events of the year is the Amboy Columbus Day cross country meet, with some of the best teams in 1A and buses lined along highway 52 as far as the eye can see.

Here is an observation some may call sexist, but many others have made the same comment. It is this – many a girl cross country runner peaks as a freshman or sophomore and then regresses because of weight gain and structure.

When it comes to one’s body, it is a lot tougher being a female than a male.

After cross country, it was off to Silver Ridge for the Oregon golf sectional where another observation is made – 1A private schools have an advantage over public schools

because those girls have a more privileged lifestyle and afforded better opportunities to succeed on the golf course.

At the 2A level, affluent suburban public schools have the same advantage as the privates, as evidenced by scores like a 298 by Lincolnshire Stevenson. That’s four girls averaging a shade under 75 each.

f there was one play that best described Lena-Winslow’s drubbing of Forreston in football on Oct. 11, it was Bailey Cullor running for his life with Gennings Dunker, Isaiah Bruce, and Sean Ormiston in hot pursuit late in the first half.

Cullor is an excellent quarterback, but did not have a chance against three of the absolute best players in 1A, as he was sacked for a loss.

As Le-Win coach Ric Arends said, his defense played “lights out.”

Without needing a fourth down conversion or penalty, the Cardinals could only muster two solid first downs in the first half.

The longest run from scrimmage was eight yards, as they fell behind 38-0.

The no-huddle offense was efficiently run, but there was nowhere for it to go.

Bottom line - Forreston did not have the size and physicality to come close to matching up with the Panthers.

Derek DeVries did all he could, raising havoc early with the L-W running game.

Eventually, Le-Win figured out Forreston defense and used the combo of physicality and big-play ability to put the hammer down.

Besides a strong running game, Le-Win proved adept at passing, completing 3-of-4 passes for 81 yards, including a touchdown on fourthand-6 to start the scoring.

Even though the 1A north quadrant will be extremely tough, this is going to be a team very difficult to knock off.

Does Morrison have a chance?

They are very fast, but Forreston has some speed too.

Besides, I truly doubt if anyone in 1A comes anywhere close to the physical presence of Le-Win.

The Oregon Lions spend one day a month in Sycamore to sort glasses.

Oregon Lions Fundraisers Oregon Lions Club Members were kept busy with two fundraising activities in the last few weeks.

Members were stationed outside Oregon businesses and at the intersection of Route 2 and Highway 64 on Sept. 27-28, asking for donations and handing out candy during their annual Candy Day Event.

The following weekend they sold pork chops, brats and chicken breast sandwiches during the Autumn on Parade Festival in Oregon on Oct. 5-6.

Oregon Lions thanks everyone who donated during Lions Candy Days and supported them by purchasing food from their booth during the Autumn on Parade Festival.

The grounds of the Boone County Museum of History are now graced by an iconic monument to Belvidere’s, and in fact all, First Responders.

Elected officials from Boone County, City of Belvidere, law enforcement leaders from Boone County and City of Belvidere, and firefighters displaying a wealth of equipment were all on hand to commemorate the dedication.

The larger-than-life bronze monument portrays a law enforcement officer, a blanket-wrapped rescued child, and a firefighter.

Created and executed by sculptor Jeff Adams of Oregon/Mt. Morris and sponsored by Jack and Peggy Wolf Family Foundation, the monument will be an inspiration for generations to come.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Oct. 4 At 4:50 p.m., police responded to a three-car traffic crash on the Washington Street bridge involving a 2011 Cadillac driven by Harold W. Nance, 94, of Oregon, that struck a 2005 Chevrolet driven by David B. Berg, 45, of Oregon, which then struck a 2006 Ford driven

by Mary T. Janulis, 52, of Oak Lawn. No citations were issued.

Oct. 6 At 2:57 p.m., police responded to a two-car traffic crash at the intersection of N. 3rd and Monroe Streets where a 2017 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Artur T. Pyszniak, 47, of Streamwood, struck a 2019 GMC driven by David A. Turner, 71, of Winnebago. Pyszniak was issued a citation for improper overtaking.

Oct. 7 At 10:19 a.m., police took one 15-yearold male juvenile of Oregon into limited custody for the offense of distribution of harmful material. The juvenile was released into a parent’s custody with diversion services requested and referral for juvenile delinquency being sent to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office.

At 5:33 p.m., police responded to a two-car traffic crash in the 200 block of

N. 4th Street where a 2015 Jeep driven

by Jackson J. Werren, 15, of Oregon, struck a parked 2014 Subaru belonging to Christopher J. Blevins, 52, of Oregon.

No citations were issued.

Oct. 8 At 7:46 a.m.,police responded to the 300 block of S. 2nd Street for a report of a hit and run traffic crash that occurred at some point the prior evening involving a parked 2018 Dodge belonging to Riley S. Comins, 33, of Oregon, and a parked 2013 Ford belonging to Roger L. Comins, 41, of Oregon. Following a thorough investigation, Alexander J. Garcia, 27, of Oregon, was issued a citation for failure to give information after striking an unattended vehicle.

Oct. 10 At 3:03 p.m., police took one 15-yearold male juvenile of Oregon into limited custody for criminal damage to school property. The juvenile was released into a guardian’s custody with referral for juvenile delinquency being sent to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Joseph D. Caldwell, II,27, of Dixon, was arrested at 7:10 p.m. for violation of orders of protection. Caldwell was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 11 Dawn M. Epperson, age 52, Rockford, was issued a citation at 5:10 p.m. for speeding, 44 mph in a 30 mph zone.

This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

Oct. 12 Byran D. Buss, 18, of Rockford, was issued citations at 12:21 a.m. for speeding, 50 mph in a 30 mph zone, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred in the 500 block of N. 4th Street.

Elizabeth A. Gray, 34, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 10:23 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

At 2:12 p.m., police took one 13-yearold female juvenile of Oregon into limited custody for the offenses of being a runaway and resisting/obstructing an officer. The juvenile was transported to the Ogle County Jail chapel area until transportation to the Nachusa Lutheran Home of LSSI, in Nachusa,, could be obtained.

Robert J. Leddy, Jr., 70, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 6:19 p.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

Lorie A. Mallek, 32, of Freeport, was issued a citation at 11:54 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 700 block of E. Washington Street.

Oct. 13 Jory S. Revels, 30, of Rockford, was

issued civil citations at 12:30 a.m. for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. These citations were issued in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Alexis C. Castillo, 19, Oregon, was arrested at 9:21 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Castillo was also issued a citation for unlawful window tint; and civil citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis less than 10 grams.

Four parking citations and four verbal/ written warnings were issued Oct. 7-13.

ROBERT GIBSON DRUCKS Robert Gibson Drucks, 84,of Oregon, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

He was born Dec. 6, 1934 in Chicago Heights, the son of Eric and Persis “Peggy” (Gibson) Drucks.

He graduated from Grant Community High School in 1953. After graduating he served his country in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1953 – 1978 at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center where he taught Machine Repair as a First Class

gon, and raised their six children in a happy and busy home on South Sixth Street.

After her children were all enrolled in school, Phyllis resumed her teaching career and became a Language Arts teacher at Ruby Nash School and Etnyre Middle School in Oregon.

She loved teaching and had incredibly clear recollection of nearly all her former students. In retirement her life was filled with her loving husband, John, until he passed away in 2003, her many books, friends, and especially her family as it continued to bless her with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Phyllis was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Despite the normal effects of aging, Phyllis kept her sunny disposition.

Throughout her life and right up to the end, the calm assurance of her strong faith guided her.

In the final chapter of Phyllis’ life, her caregiver, Sara, provided her with loving care and lasting friendship.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, sister Ann Baker, brother-in-law Gene Baker, and

infant brother Herbert.

Survivors include six children: John J. (Cathy) Conroy of Elmhurst,Trisha (Edward) Eckhart of Libertyville, Douglas (Julie) Conroy of Geneva, Joseph (Sheila) Conroy of Grayslake, Stephen (Julie) Conroy of McHenry and Mary Beth (Bob) Wulf of Victoria, Minnesota, 24 grandchildren: Jack (Anne), Mary (Joe) Simpson, Claire, Patrick, Kevin, Meg and Peter Conroy; Jenny (Scott) Yingling and Matt Eckhart; Elizabeth and Doug (Lauren) Conroy; Joseph, Maureen, Bridget and Brendan Conroy; Stephen, Susan (Nick) Koerner, Michael, John, Will, and Luke Conroy; Rebecca, Robert and Ben Wulf; and 6 great grandchildren: Allie, John and Connor Conroy; Will and Charlie Simpson; Jake Yingling, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Phyllis’ family extends a heartfelt thank you to Serenity Hospice (especially Nurse Sheila) and to Father Naill, the deacons, Communion ministers, and parishioners of St. Mary Parish Oregon for their personal visits and prayers.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon, preceded by a wake at Farrell, Holland & Gale Funeral Home, Oregon, at 4 to 7 p.m., with Rosary at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 20.

Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

He married Karen “Vinna” Petersen on May 2, 1954 in Fox Lake. She preceded him in 2004.

Robert worked for John’s Mansville Company in Waukegan as a machinist for 45 years. He enjoyed target shooting, traveling to the Upper Peninsula every year to see the fall colors, spending time with his grandchildren, going to the gun shop and the sunrise restaurant to see and be

with his friends.

He was a former member of the Twin Towers Gun Club.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Vinna, and his sister Barbara Severs.

He is survived by his two sons; Eric Robert (Kelly) Drucks of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin and Kenneth (Susan) Drucks of Oregon, six grandchildren; Nicholas, Michael, and Matthew Drucks, Amy (Derek) Roche,

Rachel (Tim) White, and Emily (Michael) Looney, and three great grandchildren; Russell, Rory, and Winnie.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th Street in Oregon.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the funeral. Burial will be at the Daysville Cemetery near Oregon.

A memorial fund is established for Autism Research.

Phyllis Jean Conroy, 95, of Oregon, passed away on Oct. 9, 2019 in her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Aug. 14, 1924 in Sterling, to Samuel Percy Stump and Almeda Mae, nee Zook, Stump.

The family moved from Illinois to Fort Dodge, Iowa where Phyllis spent her youth. Reciting poetry in the parlor of their home was a favorite evening family pastime.

As a child, Phyllis loved reading books, singing harmony to church hymns, and playing the violin in an orchestra.

Some of her fondest childhood memories were the carefree, summer days spent at her grandparents’ farm located at Franklin Corners near Morrison.

A special memory was playing with the children of the Mount Carmel Orphanage founded by her grandparents, Abraham and Rosanna Zook.

Located on the family farm, the orphanage’s mission was to care for orphaned children, many from the inner city of Chicago.

In the fresh country air, they would do chores, go to school, and learn the Christian faith. One of the orphan girls became a lifelong friend of Phyllis.

The family eventually returned to Illinois where Phyllis graduated from Polo

High School as the class Valedictorian.

She attended and graduated from North Central College with a bachelor’s degree in education followed by graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.

Heeding the call for teachers needed in the young state of Washington, Phyllis and other teacher friends boarded a train for the Northwest. In the lumbering town of Buckley at the foot of Mount Rainier, Phyllis taught British literature, speech, and directed plays at the local high school.

Returning to Illinois, Phyllis continued her teaching career at Reavis High School in Burbank/Oak Lawn and Stockton High School.

While in Stockton, she met the love of her life, husband John Conroy, who at the time was the U.S. Soil & Water Conservationist for Jo Daviess County.

Since both of their families resided in Dixon, they commuted back and forth on weekends together from Stockton to Dixon. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Phyllis and John were married at St. Patrick’s Church in Dixon on June 14, 1952. The young couple settled in Ore-

OBITUARIES WALTER GREEN SCHRYVER Walter Green Schryver, 82 of Elk Mound, Wisconsin, passed away on October 7, 2019 at Mayo Health Hospital, Eau Claire due to pulmonary fibrosis.

His wife, Dolores, and children, Jennifer, Martin, and Laura were at his side.

Walt was born in Rockford on June 12, 1937 to Martin III and Alice Schryver.

Walt was raised in Polo and attended Congress Grade School in Polo and Polo High School, graduating in 1955.

Walt attended University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado, studying forestry and business.

He joined the Illinois National Guard from 1959-1964. In 1960, Walt married his high school sweetheart Dolores “Skip” in Polo on June 11 and had a wonderful life of 59 years together.

BARBARA J. WILCOX Barbara J. Wilcox, 79, of Polo, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019.

She was born on Aug. 24, 1940 in Dixon, to Edward & Maude Marquitz.

She married Jim Wilcox in Omaha, Nebraska on May 8, 1971.

Walt started his insurance career at Crum & Forster Insurance in Freeport as an In-Land Marine Underwriter in 1960. After moving to Wisconsin in 1974, Walt became an Insurance Fieldman for Integrity Insurance of Appleton, Wisconsin.

Walt was honored in 1981 in Washington, D.C. as Fieldman of the Year for Wisconsin. He retired from Society Insurance, Fond du Lac in 1999.

Walt’s biggest love was being a volunteer fireman for Wheaton Township. He was the founding father for the Chippewa Falls Fire Protection District. He was the first deputy chief for Wheaton when the Fire District was formed in 1977.

After retiring in 1999, Walt and

Dolores “Skip” traveled in a RV to Florida for the winter several times, as well as the Southwest.

Their favorite trip was to the Sunshine Coast on Vancouver Island.

Walt always had his favorite joke book along when on insurance trips with Integrity agents.

Walt is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dolores; daughter, Jennifer (Anthony) Romero of Severance, Colorado; son, Martin Schryver of Hugo, Minnesota; daughter, Laura (Angel) Bernal of Maplewood, Minnesota; grandchildren, Justin (Candice) Freeberg of Mobile, Alabama, Danielle (Trinston) Jeffries of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Alexis Bernal of Maplewood, Minnesota;

great-grandchildren, Matthew and Lucas Freeberg, Mobile Alabama; sister Lucretia (John) Kelly of Columbia, Illinois; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin III and Alice Schryver; and brother, Martin IV “Timmy” Schryver.

A Celebration of Life for Walt will be at Wheaton Fire Station on Saturday, Nov. 2 from noon-4 p.m. A light lunch will be provided. Interment will be at Fairmont Cemetery in Polo, Illinois.

Any monetary donations will be donated to the Wheaton Fire Department.

Cremation Society of Wisconsin, Altoona is assisting the family with arrangements.
