Rain doesn’t stop crowd at AOP festival

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A little drizzle and soggy ground wasn’t enough to keep the crowds away from Oregon’s 48th annual Autumn on Parade festival last weekend.

“It went very well considering the weather we were dealt,” said AOP Committee President Marseyne Snow. “We still had a good crowd and the crafters I talked to were happy with their sales.”

Several inches of rain fell overnight Friday into Saturday, leaving the ground saturated and muddy.

Drizzle fell intermittently all day Saturday and more — much of which didn’t materialize — was predicted for Sunday.

The rain stopped long enough Sunday for the Harvest Time Parade.

“We had a good parade,” Snow said. “It gave us a window for that.”

Down on the courthouse square, the Farmers Market and the Food Court were already full of shoppers by mid-morning Saturday, despite the clouds overhead.

Sandy Armbruster, of Oregon, was not deterred in the least by the dreary weather as she and members of her family looked through the merchandise offered at the booths.

“We came early to beat the rain,” she said. “We got here at 8 a.m.”

She comes to shop every year, and found the outdoor decorations she was looking for.

“And then some,” she said with a laugh. “We’ve already made a trip to the car. It’s a wonderful event.”

Dana Russell-Brown and Diana Lewis were doing a brisk business at their booth, selling pottery and dried flowers, in front of the courthouse.

Russell-Brown said the crowd did not seem smaller than usual.

“We’ve been busy. The crowd has been at least average,” she said.

Around the corner, Lynnette Hough visited with the customers at her Maple Lane Farm booth, offering homemade maple syrup and other maple-flavored treats.

“Its been good,” she said. “We’ve had a steady crowd.”

Umbrellas and raincoats came out as the drizzle resumed shortly before noon.

“I came prepared,” one woman said as she ducked for cover under a bright print umbrella and headed for the Farmers Market.

Snow said a few parade participants canceled due to the forecast on Sunday.

“The predicted rain may have kept a few people from coming but we had a good festival,” she said.

The winner of the 60/40 raffle was Pam Sweger of Byron. She won $7,280.16, after taxes.

Coliseum and ADA is discussed by council

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The Oregon City Council discussed options Tuesday evening for making the Coliseum handicapped accessible.

City engineer Corey Buck, of Willett, Hofmann & Associates, Dixon, said neither the lift nor access to it is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. For the problems with the lift itself, Buck recommended calling the manufacturer to see what changes can be made to bring it into compliance, rather than replace it.

Buck also provided estimates for a ramp into the building which would meet ADA requirements.

A ramp made of composite would cost about $125,000 and concrete would be about $150,000.

Mayor Ken Williams asked if the building would qualify for exemptions to the ADA because its within the city’s historic district.

Buck said he doubts those exemptions apply.

“I believe if you anything to it, you have to make it ADA compliant,” he said.

side of the Coliseum, and Williams said he also has concerns about that destroying the historic look of the building.

Commissioner Tom Izer suggested putting it on the south side, where it would be next to a handicapped parking spot in the municipal parking lot.

However, Street Superintendent Mike Bowers said a ramp there might obstruct a water main that runs from the well house to Fourth Street.

“We need to get it solved,” Williams said, and he directed Buck to get more information on updating the lift.

“I would love it if we could use the lift we have,” he said.

City Clerk Charlene Ruthe said Wednesday that the lift passed a recent inspection and has an emergency phone inside.

The council also discussed updating raffle license requirements on Tuesday.

Commissioner Kurt Wilson said some organizations are not filing applications for raffle licenses in time for them to be considered by the council before the raffle takes

The Eagle’s Nest Art Gallery at the Oregon Public Library will celebrate its 100th anniversary with an open house on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 3 to 6 p.m.

The afternoon will features interactive performance art by Roni Golan.

Activities for kids will include canvas painting with Cin’s Treasures and donut drawing with elementary art teacher Jordan DeWilde.

Hors d’oeuvres will be provided by Scoop’s Steam Powered Subs.

Black Hawk fund donors honored

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Seven area banks and two individuals were recognized Oct. 4 for making the donations that finally set the repairs to the Black Hawk Statue in motion.

At a ceremony on the Ogle County Courthouse lawn, members of the Black Hawk Restoration Committee honored representatives from Stillman Bank, The Harvard State Bank, Byron Bank, Sterling Federal Bank, Union Savings Bank, and Holcomb State Bank for their total contributions of $14,000.

Also honored were Kim Smeja, of Oregon, for contributing $20,000 and Richard Little, also of Oregon, for his donation of $2,000.

The donations put fundraising for the statue over top of the $225,000 needed for officials from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Conservation Foundation to sign contracts with Quality Restorations Inc., of Wood Dale, the firm that will do the repair work.

The engineering firm Simpson, Gumpertz & Heger, which has an office in Chicago, will supervise the restoration under a separate contract with the two agencies.

The $225,000 was needed to acti-

vate a matching grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

Restoration team member Roger Cain said he recently spoke with officials from QRI during a conference call with the IDNR and ICF. “They’re excited to be involved in a piece of art,” he said.

Eric Schenck, ICF executive director, said QRI, based in Chicago, is nationally known.

“I want to express our faith and confidence in this contractor,” he said.

The IDNR and ICF are committed to seeing the repairs through to completion, he said.

The work will start next June, Cain said, and be completed in 60 to 90 days.

Like the past four winters, the concrete statue, will be encased in protective wrap before winter weather sets in.

“They are going to wrap it this winter,” Cain said. “They don’t want to risk [more damage from] a severe freeze-thaw cycle.”

The IDNR has agreed to pay for the wrapping and unwrapping next spring, he said.

Work on finding the correct mix and color for the concrete to make the repairs will be completed this

fall.

The statue, created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1910 as a tribute to Native Americans, is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Rock River at Lowden State Park near Oregon.

Time and weather have significantly damaged the surface of the landmark, which was unveiled in 1911.

Schenck urged the community to maintain its commitment to the statue.

“Forever is a long time,” he said.

“This effort to maintain the statue will be an ongoing process that will need your long-term commitment and support.”

The restoration committee will now focus on establishing a trust fund to secure the statue’s future.

“The Black Hawk Statue is clearly the most recognizable landmark associated with Oregon, and to not have it repaired is simply not an option.” said Jan Stilson, Restoration Committee Chairman.

The Oregon Together Arts & Beautification team invites the public to participate in “Autumn 61061,” a photography exhibit featuring photos taken in the 61061 zip code during the autumn months.

The show will be held in the gallery on the top floor of Cork & Tap, 305 E. Washington St., Oregon.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, Nov. 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Anyone is welcome to exhibit photos.

The only parameters are that it must be fall, and the photos must have been taken within the 61061 zip code.

The photos do not have to be taken this year. Pieces must be a minimum size of 8 x 10 inches, matted or mounted, and ready to hang (wired or with some other hanging apparatus).

Pieces do not need to be framed. The limit is two entries per person.

“Murder” mystery at library The Oregon Public Library will host a murder mystery dinner on Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27.

A team of paranormal experts has been called to investigate a claim that a century-old murder during the construction of the Oregon Public Library was caused by a ghost.

Recently, he said, the council had to schedule a special meeting just to approve a raffle application that wasn’t turned in early enough, and some applications aren’t filed until after the raffle has been held.

In addition, some applications are not completely filled out and are difficult to read, Wilson said.

He said the deadlines need to be made clear and then strictly enforced.

However, no one on the council knew for sure what the deadline is for filing applications.

“These raffles are being held by organization that do good things for our community,” he said. “They’re all volunteers and they’re busy. We need to make it as easy as possible.”

He directed Wilson to draw up a one-page application form and bring it to the Oct. 23 council meeting.

Letters outlining the deadline should then be sent to organizations who regularly hold raffles, he said.

City attorney Paul Chadwick suggested making an annual raffle license available.

In other business, Izer announced that Terry Plemmons Jr. has been hired to replace Bowers who is retiring next month after 35 years with the city.

A Forreston man’s love for his family farm and his wife’s love for horses came together nearly a decade ago at Centennial Acres southwest of Forreston.

Matt and Emily Williams and their son Isaac, 4, will celebrate the farm’s sesquicentennial and showcase their riding stable with an open house on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Centennial Acres is at 13440 West Grove Road, approximately two miles southwest of Forreston.

The event will include tours of their facilities, free pony rides, information about the farm’s history, and refreshments.

The Williams’ five-acre homestead is part of the farm purchased in September of 1868 by Ubbo Greenfield, Matt’s great-great-great grandfather.

When the couple moved there nine and a half years ago, Emily had the perfect spot to develop and operate a riding stable, her lifelong dream.

She gives riding lessons and trains and boards horses. Matt summed up their feelings.

“Living on the farm is a blessing,” he said.

Emily’s love for horses runs deep, even though she grew up in Ashton.

“We lived in town. Getting a horse was never an option,” she said with a smile.

However, she started taking riding lessons she was 12, and her passion for horses grew.

In college, she took equestrian courses and bought her first horse.

Emily taught lessons sporadically while working another job, but moving to the farm provided the opportunity to make it a full-time career.

“I very much love horses,” she said. “Coming out here was a dream I never thought would be a reality.”

Matt’s love for the farm runs just as deep.

“When I was a little guy I always loved coming out here and picking corn with my grandpa,” he said. “I love it here. I like being out in the country.”

OHS Class of 53 reminisces at its 65th reunion Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The Oregon High School Class of 1953 held its 65th class reunion at the Pines.

Our senior class consisted of 47 students, 27 boys and 20 girls.

Our principal Roland Kiest and secretary Betty Brunner were located in two small offices by the front entrance.

The school board consisted of H. Hanes, G. Fearer, R. Decker, F. Gillespie and B. Haas.

Our two custodians were Frank Masters and Hugh Speed.

Four veteran members of the 16 teachers’ staff were Mae Collins, Vivian Holmes, Laura Kloster and Ruth Donaldson.

The school year started Aug. 29, and commencement was held May 29.

Relatively speaking sports were fairly limited.

There were six football games and 19 basketball games, nine golf meets, and when our yearbook was printed no track meets were scheduled at that time.

Our football schedule consisted of South Beloit, Mt. Carroll, Mt. Morris, Polo, Lanark and Earlville.

No one wore a football mask. A mask was considered dangerous because it was legal to grab it.

A player from Beloit broke my nose when I was pass blocking.

The seating in the gym served as the dressing area for football.

We had no assemblies in the gym during football season. The seats were where we stored our football uniforms.

Girls sports, wrestling, cross country, and baseball were a thing of the future.

Most of the girls belonged to the Girls’ Athletic Association.

Our basketball coach Ray DeMoulin took me to the final game of the Sweet 16 team Illinois State Basketball Tournament.

There was only one division at that time so all the teams in the state competed in the same tournament held at Huff Gym at the University of Illinois.

Hebron High School won the State Championship.

1953 was the first televised Sweet 16 tournament.

We were instructed to tap our jock strap with the basketball lightly three times before we attempted the free throw. This was supposed to relax us before we attempted the free throw.

My other sports memory was when I won my first 880-yard run against Mt. Morris, my parents took me to Bechtold’s for an ice cream cone.

Of course that ice cream shop is now a city parking lot.

Our end of the year Sports Banquet was held in the basement of the Coliseum with Red Grange as the guest speaker.

We brought sack lunches and we ate in the study hall. The study hall had book shelves on two sides and a small room to check out the books which the students manned.

The high school librarian and guidance counselor were added in later years.

Hugh Speed our custodian manned the halls during lunch hour.

Two students drove cars to school, and with no student parking lot, they parked in the teachers’ parking lot.

The student parking lot today was the location of the football and track field in 1953.

Back then athletes had flat top hair cuts, purchased our books at Fischers Book Store, our parents did not drive us to school, band practiced on the stage floor, no cell phones, no back packs, etc.

At that time we had a couple of drive-in restaurants including the

Tee Pee Drive In, and Summer League Softball with Gabby Bradford announcing the games was a summer time favorite.

The Chana Chuggers and a team from Grand Detour participated.

We also enjoyed the movies, especially Roy Rogers at Lamb’s Theatre Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Whitmore named clinical supervisor at Focus House Focus House, an Ogle County owned care facility for adjudicated youth, announces that Katie Whitmore has been named clinical supervisor, replacing Brenda Mason, who is now Focus House Director.

Whitmore grew up in Rockford and graduated from Auburn High School in 2007.

After high school she went on to attend the University of Illinois at Chicago graduating with her bachelor of arts degree in Psychology and a minor in Sociology in 2011.

Her career began at an inpatient drug and alcohol treatment center for adolescents.

Katie Whitmore From there she went to Rockford Public Schools, working as a truancy officer.

Later, she began working with youth in foster care where she facilitated a life skills program for teenagers before joining the Focus House team in December of 2014.

Whitmore obtained her masters of social work degree in May and was named the clinical supervisor in July.

Wildlife program for kids at Taft The Oregon Park District and Lorado Taft Campus have teamed up to offer a new after-school program about woodland wildlife.

The program will be held on Monday, Nov. 19 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

The fee is $11 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $13 for non-residents.

Taft Campus staff will teach children in grades 3-8 how animals hibernate, migrate, or stay active during the coldest time of year.

The deadline to register is Monday, Nov. 12 and can be completed at the Nash Recreation Center, 304 S. Fifth St., Oregon, or by calling 815-732-3101.

Lincoln photo arrives for Ogle courtroom

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A reproduction of a well-known photograph of 16th President Abraham Lincoln is now on display in one of the courtrooms at the Ogle County Judicial Center in Oregon.

Retired Whiteside County Judge John Hauptman, representing the Illinois Judges Association, and Rory T. Weiler, from the Illinois Bar Association, unveiled the photograph at a ceremony on Oct. 3 in Ogle County Presiding Judge Robert T. Hanson’s courtroom.

Hanson said the photograph, taken by Alexander Hesler on June 3, 1860 in the Old State Capitol in Springfield, was part of Lincoln’s campaign for President of the United States. “We are excited to be part of this historic effort to honor Abraham Lincoln,� He said. “Hesler’s photograph captures Lincoln at a turning point in his life as he transitioned from trial lawyer to Presidential candidate,� he said.

Weiler said the beardless portrait was Lincoln’s favorite photograph of himself.

Retired judge and attorney Alan Cargerman, who has extensively researched Lincoln, said he was in Ogle County several times but never represented a client in a case there.

The last time that Lincoln was known to be in the county, Cargerman said, was in 1856. At that time he gave a speech in Oregon for Republican Presidential candidate John C. Fremont and also visited his friend and fellow state legislator Zenas Aplington, the founder of Polo.

The permanent installation of the photograph in Ogle and other counties was made possible by donations from the Illinois Judges Association and Illinois Bar Association and their respective foundations.

The four organizations have partnered with the Illinois State Historical Society, which owns the four glass-plate positives of Hesler’s Lincoln portrait.

The ISHS is leading a statewide campaign to place a framed copy of the photograph in each of Illinois’ 102 counties to commemorate the state’s bicentennial this year.

Volleyball team continues to roll with win over Byron

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com The Lady Hawks volleyball team wasted little time in dispatching Byron Tuesday night, 25-18, 25-9 to move to 5-2 in conference play and 15-6 overall.

Senior Bailey Nelson led Oregon with 10 kills, two blocks and seven digs. She was followed by freshman Jenae Bothe’s three kills and two blocks and McKenna Sadler’s 12 digs.

Byron fell to 1-6 in conference and 7-16 overall.

On Oct. 2, the Hawks downed Stillman Valley in a 3-game set 25-19, 16-25, 25-17.

In the first game, Nelson helped her team to a 10-5 lead a pair of kills and aces.

Oregon increased its advantage to 14-9 on a block by Nelson and Hannah Donaldson, a back row kill by Jasmine Herbst, a kill by Abi Hopkins and the shot of the game – a one handed dig by Herbst off a slam that snuck over the net for a point.

Stillman Valley would close to within 17-16, but Hopkins’ serving, kills by Nelson and blocks by the front line led to the win.

“Their outside hitters were hitting it right back, so we adjusted our blocking at the one (right back

corner) position,” Hopkins said. “That enabled our defense to pick up their cross shots.”

started serving. She took the Cardinals from a 9-8 lead to 17-8, as Oregon had difficulty keeping the ball in play.

During the scoring drought, Nelson had one of her best shots of the match, only to see Holland Smits make a diving save and save the point for the Cardinals.

“I was glad we could put in different line-ups and adjust to certain positions,” Oregon coach Faith McNamee said. “They’re happy to be there and work hard.”

Another key for Oregon was blocking. Stillman had multiple hitters capable of damage at the net, but the Hawks were effective in their positioning.

“Tonight, we had lots of blocks – more than normal,” McNamee said. “The fans like it, the players like it. It gets momentum going.”

Midway through the final contest, Nelson was scoring from all parts of the court and Oregon was particularly effective in the back line.

“Bailey was on fire and good at listening to the libero (McKenna Sadler),” Hopkins said.

“Bailey did a nice job with sets and kills in the back row,” McNamee said.

Senior Night will be Tuesday, Oct. 16 before the match with North Boone. Introductions of the seven seniors will be held at around 5:45 p.m.

After losing to Byron and then tying them earlier this season, Oregon soccer coach Seger Larson predicted a 3-0 win for his team against the Tigers at the 1A Byron Regional.

That was exactly the outcome, as the No. 5 seed Hawks went on the road and upset No. 3 Byron under the lights.

“We struggled early on and lost games we should have won,” Larson said. “I’m proud to see the way these guys have grown.”

Two weeks ago, Oregon was 2-13-3, including the earlier 3-0 loss to the Tigers and a 1-1 draw.

Since then, they’ve won four straight, a first for Larson in his 3 years as Hawk coach.

Taking advantage of the wind at their backs, the Hawks dominated play in the first half. They had six shots on goal compared to only one for Byron.

At the 22-minute mark, senior Jon Acosta took the ball near the net and made a perfect pass to Geronimo Leon. Leon, a foreign-exchange student from Ecuador, pounded the ball at goalkeeper Connor Harn, only to see it bounce back.

Leon took the rebound and then ran it by Harn with a hard shot for a 1-0 Hawk lead.

“They out-executed us and did the little things better than us,” Byron coach Andy Stavnem said.

“I hated to face them a third time. They’ve gotten so much better.”

“That was the best complete half of soccer we played all year,” Larson said. “Offensively, we created chances. Several times, we missed open opportunities on the weak side.”

Oregon received a gift early in the second half when a Byron player inadvertently knocked the ball into his own net, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

With 19 minutes left, Byron appeared to have its best chance for a breakaway goal, but Eli Rufer rushed towards the net and stopped the open shooter. With the stellar defense by Hawk goalkeeper Owen Ketter, it may have not mattered, though.

“That was the best defense we played all around,” Larson said. “Alan Acosta and Brigham Finch were the key cornerstones.”

A few minutes later, Sitze caught a rebound off a long shot by Finch. The ball bounced off Harn’s chest, and a diving Sitze was able to catch it with his foot for the final goal.

With how well Oregon defense was playing, that effectively put the game away.

“Our defense really stepped up,” Sitze said.

With the win, Oregon (6-13-3) advances to the regional final for the fourth straight year. The Hawks will meet Stillman Valley at 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12.

Last year, the Hawks beat Byron in the first game, but lost to Stillman in the final. The 2 previous years, they won the regional.

“We have a legitimate chance to win the regional,” Larson said. “Our communication on the field is so much better.”

‘Bago offense too much for Hawks in 27-7 loss

It was a case of Oregon being unable to make defensive stops in the second half in a 27-7 BNC football loss to Winnebago on Oct. 5.

The Hawks held a 7-0 halftime lead, but it was all ‘Bago the rest of the way.

“Their power game kind of wore us down,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said. “We tried a couple different options on defense, but couldn’t stop them.”

With two seconds left in the first half, Dalton Hermes plunged over from a yard out on fourth down for the 7-0 lead. That capped off a drive that took up half of the second quarter.

“The first half was sloppy for both teams,” Schneiderman said. “Neither of us could finish drives with the wet balls and fumbles.”

The Indians took a 14-7 lead in the third quarter. Oregon faced a fourth down at midfield and came up an inch short.

“That was a key point of the game,” Schneiderman said. “We couldn’t find a rhythm on offense.”

Jared Roberts, who had 170 yards on 23 carries, added three touchdowns for the Indians. As a team, ‘Bago had 272 yards on the ground, compared to 175 for Oregon.

Carter Fruin led the Hawks with 74 yards on 11 carries. Zach Crandall contributed 67 yards on eight totes and Hermes was 14-for-56.

The ‘Bago defense sacked Ryker Finch to the tune of minus 30 yards. Oregon was also hurt by three fumbles.

The 2-5 Hawks travel to North Boone (5-2) to take on a team with wins over Stillman Valley and Dixon. The Vikings have an all-state caliber quarterback in Britton Morris.

“We can’t sell out on the pass,” Schneiderman said. “He’ll tuck it in and run. He’s one of the best athletes in the conference. It will be a big challenge. He can put the ball on the dime.”

Winnebago moved to 4-3, but has to win out against Stillman and NB to have a shot at the playoffs.

Hawk golfers bow out at sectional at Silver Ridge

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com The high-school golfing careers came to end for a pair of Oregon seniors at the ISHA 1A sectional on Monday, Playing on their home course of Silver Ridge, Carson Buck and Adam Merrill weren’t able to advance to the state meet.

Buck gave himself a chance with an opening 41 on his first nine, but ran into trouble on the second nine and finished with an 87.

In his fourth straight trip to the sectional, Merrill got behind early and never could recover. He had a 47-45 for 92.

“I gave up after the first nine,” Merrill said. “I had a bunch of 3-putts and chunked a bunch of my chips.”

For Buck, his problems were off the tee on the later stages of his round. Those were played on the front nine, which he usually plays better.

“I lost it on number five through nine,” Buck said. “After 6 and 7, I was hoping to just make bogeys. I didn’t help having long waits on at the tee.”

favorite sectional of the four was with Matt Myers in 2016.

Coach Jim Spratt felt both golfers would be hard to replace.

“Adam’s been steady all four years and Jackson gotten progressively better,” Spratt said. “It also helped our program having families like the Bucks and Merrills that have been good to us. Hopefully, our young kids will pick up where Jackson and Adam left off.”

Sectional team champ was Riverdale (320), who also won the state title last year. North Shore Country

Day (329) and Sterling Newman (337) grabbed the other two state berths.

Medalist was Anthony Ruthe of Riverdale with a 73 on the 6,150-yard course, with Marcus Smith of Winnebago second with a 74.

Winnebago was fourth in the team standings and senior Scott Schneider also qualified for them with an 81.

Byron’s Tony Eddy tied for fifth with a 78. As a sophomore, Eddy was a member of the 2016 Tiger state-championship team.

Golf Sectional

I’m still convinced that a highschool golf sectional is the toughest mental test of any prep sports. Golf

COMMENTARY Andy Colbert is hard enough on its own, let alone the added pressure of performing in a do-or-die situation over a six-hour period.

That’s about how long a sectional round takes. No other high-school sport comes close to continuous activity for that long. And, it is nobody but you.

As I looked around the Silver Ridge banquet room, the scene there was the same as any other golf sectional I’ve been at. It is one of hope, sometimes desperate hope, with parents, golfers and coaches anxiously scanning the leaderboard in anticipation of where the cut-off will be.

Fellow scribe, Brian Weidman of the Sauk Valley Media, remembers 3-putting the final hole of the sectional his senior year at Amboy and missing by one stroke of going downstate.

That was over 30 years ago and it is still etched in his mind as he replayed it for me.

At the Oregon sectional, there were four golfers like Weidman.

Each shot an 83 and finished one

stroke off the 82 needed to advance.

You can bet they are replaying their round and wondering about a three putt, missed chip or errant drive. Will it haunt them 30 years from now?

Hennepin Hundred

For me, this past weekend consisted of pacing at the Hennepin Hundred race, announcing agegroup winners at the Autumn on Parade 5K Run and covering the Amboy Columbus Day Cross Country Invite.

A grade principal from Michigan was hoping to run 100 miles in 13 hours at the Hennepin race and I agreed to pace him for the final 30 miles.

However, with the Oregon-Winnebago football game being postponed from Friday until Saturday at 5 p.m. and Rochelle-Sterling at 7, I felt my allegiances being tugged at.

My gut instinct was to beg off and take in the football doubleheader. I even had a ready-made excuse – covering the games for the paper.

But, an obligation was made and I somewhat reluctantly headed down to Sheffield and wait at the 69-mile mark for a guy I’ve never met in my life.

Right when he reached that point, he decided to drop out, citing a hip injury. My first thought was self

pity for making what I construed was a wasted trip and missing the football games, though it should have been sympathy for him and his family that came out to support him.

No way could I make a mad dash back to Oregon, as my car was 30 miles away at the finish line in Colona.

What turned out to be disappointment on my part became a very pleasant solo run back to my car.

As light turned into dark, the canal served as a backdrop for dialogue with other runners I saw along the way.

To my surprise, I stumbled upon Josh Roos and Dean Shouer of Oregon, who were doing the 50K portion of the race. I’ve casually known both guys for a while, but there is something special about conversing oneon-one in that environment.

As I got the chance to learn more about what was going on in their lives, any thoughts I had about missing the Hawks and Hubs went away.

Though my guy from Michigan did not reach his goal doing 100 miles in the 13-hour range, someone from New York did.

Jim Sweeney’s time of 13:09 is the fastest reported in the country this year and will help the Hennepin Hundred grow its reputation as one the fastest courses anywhere.

olleyball sub-sectional seedings were announced last week by the IHSA and Forreston picked up a No. 2 over Big Northern powers Rockford Lutheran (No. 3) and Oregon (No. 4).

Is that a surprise – the NUIC over BNC? Not really, especially when LenaWinslow is the No. 1 seed.

In that sub-sectional, the top four NUIC schools are 1-2-6-9. The higher enrollment Big Northern comes in at 3-4-5-8, so it’s fairly even between the two leagues.

What’s nice about the set-up is seeing teams from different conferences going at it. Being a regional host, Forreston should have an advantage against Lutheran.

Oregon has to travel to Le-Win to contend with one of the hottest teams in the northwest part of the state. Since Sept. 1, the Panthers hadn’t lost until the Chicago Latin tournament this past weekend.

Le-Win lost to Montini and Latin, but beat Galena, the other No. 1 sub-sectional seed to move to 22-4.

They also have a quality win over defending state champ Champaign St. Thomas More.

On No. 5, a 20-minute delay wasn’t uncommon in traditionally long sectional rounds lasting up to six hours.

It can be hard for a golfer to stay in the groove, which Buck felt he was on the first nine.

“I found my swing on the first nine,” Buck said. “I started with a bogey, but got my groove around the fourth hole.”

With four birdie chances, Buck was making good work of his irons on the first nine. Making the turn at 41 left in great shape to make the cut, as an 82 would have qualified.

In reminiscing of his time at Oregon, Merrill leaves with fond memories, including winning the Byron Tiger Invite last year with a 73.

He also had an 81 at this Silver Ridge course in taking third at the 2016 regional.

“It’s been a lot of fun. I’m going to miss things like going on the bus rides,” said Merrill, who said his

Oct. 1 At 6:25 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Pines Road and 10th Street involving a 2002 Chevrolet driven by Robert A. Geiken,21, of Oregon, and a 1994 Volvo driven by Elizabeth Gonzalez, 28, of Oregon. Geiken was issued citations for disobeying a stop sign and operating a vehicle with an expired registration.

Bosco A. Hoover, 41, of Rockford, was arrested at 11 a.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant for contempt of court. Hoover was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Amanda L. Anderson, 33, of Rock Falls, was arrested at 10:07 p.m. on an outstanding Whiteside County warrant

for failure to appear on a traffic charge.

2018 ELECTION Ogle County Clerk Laura J. Cook said last week that her office complies with the Federal Voting Accessibility for the Elderly and Handicapped Act. Temporarily physically incapacitated voters who find it difficult or nearly impossible to go to the polls on Election Day may now ask for a Vote by Mail ballot without having the signature from their physician, as long as they contact the office of the county clerk and ask for an application.

Citizens can early vote in person at the county clerk’s office at the Ogle County Courthouse, 105 S. Fifth St., Oregon, or request a Vote by Mail ballot, and Cook will send an application to be filled out.

Upon return of that application, Cook will then send out the ballot.

Download an application by visiting the Ogle County Official website at www.oglecounty.org by going to the “I Want To” tab, select “Application for Vote by Mail Ballot.”

This application must be filled out and

mailed or hand delivered to the county clerk’s office, who will then mail the Vote by Mail ballot to the voter.

After voting the Vote by Mail ballot it must be mailed or hand delivered back to the county clerk’s office, so it can be counted on Election Day. The Ogle County Courthouse is accessible to the handicapped for voter registration.

Cook will send a deputy registrar to the residence of any person who wishes to register to vote and is unable to go to a registrar.

Boa constrictor found, rescued near Fulton

“Jake the Snake” has a new home in Iowa SAUK VALLEY MEDIA news@saukvalley.com Jake the Snake has a new home, after being rescued last week near Lock and Dam 13 at Fulton.

The seven-foot-long boa constrictor, likely a pet – and one that may have been intentionally released – now belongs to with Maliki Wilkinson, of Marion, Iowa, who named him.

Logan Foster, 32, of Fulton, found the snake sunning itself on some rocks on July 23 in the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge, and snapped some pictures, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said in a release on Oct. 3.

Foster sent photos around to several wildlife experts, but didn’t notify natural resource agencies.

uge, said he learned about the snake from a retired Illinois Department of Natural Resources biologist who received a photo from Foster.

“He [Foster] didn’t know who to report the snake to,” Britton said.

Fish and Wildlife staff heard rumors the snake was in the Potter’s Marsh area of the refuge, and advised the Corps of Engineers staff to be on the lookout.

Mark Nettles, a Corps employee and, coincidentally, a snake buff, spotted the chilly, lethargic boa laying alongside the road near the dam as he was on his way to work, and loaded him into his truck bed.

After several calls trying to relocate the reptile, refuge staff found Don Becker, a snake rescuer and educator from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who then found Wilkinson.

Becker couldn’t determine Jake’s, or maybe Jackie’s, gender because the snake still is recovering from wounds received while outside.

It’s lucky he was captured – a boa would die a slow, painful death if exposed to Illinois’ harsh winter, the release said.

Drug Court certified by Illinois Supreme Court The Illinois Supreme Court recently approved the certification of the Ogle County New Horizons Specialty Court Team’s Drug Court Program.

Ogle County implemented New Horizons Drug Court in August of 2009 to address substance-dependent offenders due to the lack of resources available within the State of Illinois to combat these crimes.  Drug Court is a voluntary program which incorporates intensive individualized treatment plans and recovery programs, increased levels of community supervision, and facilitates participants to become productive, responsible citizens in our community.  Specialty Courts, like Drug Court, reduce the ripple-effect cost of these non-violent offenses, hold participants accountable for their behaviors, and prevent recidivism.  By entering into the Drug Court

Since its inception in 2009, Ogle County New Horizons Drug Court has had 32 successful graduates. Graduates have an 84 percent success rate, which is defined as offenders who do not commit a substance-related felony crime following their graduation.  Successful programs, such as the Ogle County New Horizons Drug Court, can turn these offenders lives around so they are no longer viewed as criminals but as productive community members.

OBITUARIES Wilbur Loren Bowman, 88, of Polo, died on Monday, Oct. 8, 2018 at Pinecrest Terrace in Mt. Morris, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on Sept. 13, 1930 in Middlebury, Indiana, Wilbur was the oldest of six children of Noble and Ethel (Eisenhour) Bowman.

He married the love of his life, Evelyn Jean Wales, on Dec. 31, 1950 in Polo.

Wilbur was an electrical engineer by trade, and started Bowman’s Electric in 1968, which he was involved with until his retirement in 2011.

Burial will immediately follow at Fairmount Cemetery in Polo.

A lifelong Chicago Bears fan, he could often be heard in the neighboring county sharing his opinions with the television screen when the glory of the 1985 Monsters of the Midway began to fade.

Those most blessed to share their lives with Jim, knew him simply as Papa, The Man, The Myth, The Legend.

His memory lives on in the hearts of his wife of 36 years, Trudy (Byrd); and their children Brett (Michele) Piefer, Sara (Lisa) Piefer, Jennie (Jon Rodriguez) Byrd, and Stephanie (Brian) Kaskavage; and eight grandchildren, Ryan, Abigail, Emily, Dylan, Isaac, Jameson, Graham and Caroline.

He lived a celebrated life, treating friends like family, offering help to those in need and in the spirit of his childhood hero John Wayne who said “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.”

The funeral service was held on Oct. 11 at the Oregon United Methodist Church with the Rev. Megan Smick and Rev. Randy Heinzeroth officiating.

BONNIE L. MCKEAN

George (Buster) Klein, 77, of Linton, Indiana, died on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018 at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born in Toccoa, Georgia, on Nov. 24, 1940 to Giles and Jeanette (Moorhead) Klein. His parents precede him in death.

George was a proud Seabee in the U.S. Navy where he served two tours in Vietnam.

Upon being discharged from the Navy, George worked as a civilian ammunitions inspector for the Savanna Army Depot in Savanna, and Crane Army Ammunition Activity in Indiana.

He attended schools in Sterling, later receiving his GED. He loved to “get away” and be outdoors. George enjoyed duck hunting, but his passion was riding his Harley Davidson out on the open road.

Whether making a trip to the Moonshine Store in Clark County, Illinois, or heading south to Rabbit Hash, Kentucky, and Rolling Thunder ride to Washington, D.C., George was always eager to ride!

George is survived by his brother, Tom (Sharon) Klein, of Oregon; his fiancée, Sandi Rambo, of Anderson, Indiana; and several loving nieces and nephews.

A private family service will be conducted in Oregon at a later date.

Bonnie Lou (Hansen) McKean, 75, died on Sunday, Sept. 30, in Rockford, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on May 13, 1943, in Ashton, to Orville and Gladys (Hersch) Hansen.

She married Robert Curtis (Curt) McKean on Oct. 9, 1964.

She lived her adult life in Polo, and worked many years at the Polo Chiropractic Clinic.

Bonnie was selflessly dedicated to her family.

She was always there for support, an airport pickup, a weekend with the grandkids, or a Sunday night phone call.

She bravely fought lung cancer for many years, yet she never complained and seemingly never tired.

She was always on-the-go, spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her grandchildren, she loved politics, finance, health, and traveling.

She also loved her animals, and even the strays knew a good place to get a free meal.

She is survived by husband, Curt McKean; children, Robert McKean, Michele McKean, and Greg McKean; and family members Corinne McKean (daughter-in-law), David Lirgameris (son-in-law) and Shari Wakenight (ladyfriend-in-law, along with Becca and Alyssa). She deeply loved her grandchildren Sean McKean, Taylor Lirgameris, and Lauren Lirgameris - and they loved her with all their hearts.

The youngest of five children, Bonnie is survived by Russell Hansen, Glenn Hansen, and Esther Hughes. She was preceded in death by Neva Grady.

James Stephen Fleming, 66, of Oregon, better known as Jim, Jimbo and Papa, died on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2018 at home surrounded by loved ones following a valiant and hard fought 13-year battle with leukemia.

Jim was born July 11, 1952 in Dixon, to Stephen Harry and Janie Medrith (McMillion) Fleming and older sister Penelope.

He married Trudy Byrd on Aug. 29, 1982.

He worked over three decades as a salesman in the tri-state area specializing in material handling equipment,

of his family.

He enjoyed making apple cider and sharing his love of music and life.

For many years, Wilbur was an active member of the Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and a member of the Polo and Illinois State School Boards.

Along with his wife Evelyn, Wilbur volunteered throughout the country in disaster response efforts through the Church of the Brethren.

Wilbur held a longstanding position as choir director at the Polo Church of the

Oct. 1 Elaina J. Bray, 26, of Kingston, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for possession of drug equipment. Her bond was set at $10,000 (10%) bond pending a court appearance Michelle E. Ware, 35 of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear ($3,428 full cash bond) and petition to revoke ($1,500 bond at 10%). She was held at the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Oct. 2 Dwight J.D. Banks, 24, of Clinton, Iowa, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He posted the $710 full cash bond and was released with no further court date needed.

Donald R. Long, 39, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Long’s full cash bond was set at $8,963.41 pending a court appearance.

Kevin Staten, 29, of Rochelle, was

arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Staten’s full cash bond was set at $546 pending a court appearance.

Oct. 3 William Peyton, 47, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He had a bond for $2,657 and was given a $1,000 recognizance bond pending a court appearance.

Paige Massey, 20, of Elgin, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for speeding. She was jailed in lieu of a $3,000 (10%) bond pending a court appearance.

Oct. 4 Michael Uttecht, 36, of Compton, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for unlicensed. He posted $5,000 (10%) bond pending a court appearance.

Oct. 5 Levi B. Lauritzen, 26, of Polo, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Lauritzen posted $411 as bond and was released

Nicholas A. Mendez, 21, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Mendez posted $1,508 bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 6 Deputies, along with Byron Fire/EMS personnel, responded to the 12000 block of Kennedy Hill Road for a one-vehicle accident.

Both occupants were transported by Byron Ambulance to RMH for treatment of serious, but not life-threatening injuries.

At the hospital, the driver of the vehicle, Mitchell A. Wessels, 33, of Sterling, was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving while license suspended. He was also cited for operating an uninsured vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He was released on an IBond.

The passenger, Lucas W. Hopkins, 37, of Rockford, was cited for failure to wear seatbelt and given a civil citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Barbara Ballard, 59, of Mt. Morris, was arrested on a warrant for failure to

appear. Ballard’s bond was set at 1,981, but she received a recognizance bond for $1,000 and was released from the Ogle County Jail. She is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 29.

Oct. 7 At 4:50 p.m. deputies, along with Leaf River EMS, were dispatched to 5779 W. Townline Rd. for a domestic problem.

During their investigation deputies learned that John Oltmanns, 58, of Leaf River, had struck his wife with his vehicle.

He was arrested for aggravated domestic battery and jailed in lieu of bond. She was transported to an area hospital for minor injuries.

Alyssa Poff, 26, of Ogle County, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear. Poff posted $416 bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 8 Kaile M. Boney, 25, of Byron, was arrested for driving while license suspended. Boney posted $3,000/10% and was released from the Ogle County Jail.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 26.

Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
