Man turns dumpsite into garden spot

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Down along the railroad tracks at the north edge of Polo, an Oregon man is working to turn a former dumpsite into a fertile garden.

Greg Cotovsky, 42, is building a permaculture on two lots he purchased earlier this year at 504 and 506 Sunset Drive.

Once a spot where the city discarded concrete and bricks, these days city workers bring wood chips and leaves to the site to help Cotovsky rebuild topsoil.

Neighbors have also gladly chipped in with their leaves and grass clippings.

“It has been such a blessing to coordinate with the city to repurpose organic materials into rich soil,” Cotovsky said.

Permaculture, he explained, is based on sustainable practices, utilizing the patterns and features observed in natural ecosystems.

It involves working with, rather than against nature.

“Whatever we can do to be sustainable in our communities can help out environment,” he said.

As he steadily grows topsoil, Cotovsky plans to also grow plants both for beauty and food.

He hopes to eventually rebuild the soil enough to support fruit trees. Just last week he planted several aronia berry bushes on a lower area of the property, fed by a natural spring.

All plants are chosen with an eye to what they can do for both the soil and the rest of the ecosystem.

“My favorite ornamental is red bee balm,” Cotovsky said. “Not only is it beautiful, it also attracts hummingbirds by the dozens.”

The heavy clay soil in the area needs to be amended with organic material, he said, and to that end he has planted Russian comfrey and others to “chop an drop.”

They are cut and left to decay on the spot, thereby enriching the soil.

“Russian comfrey is a powerhouse for someone who’s trying to build the soil,” he said.

Cotovsky is already seeing results with an increase in fungi and earthworms living in his enriched ground.

Near the back of the property is large bin, a raised bed called a hugelkultur.

It is built in layers, starting with logs on the bottom and then grass clippings.

There Cotovsky plans to grow vining plants such as cucumbers, hops, and grapes.

Part of permaculture, he said is using berms and swales to control the flow of water.

With a small wetland in the lower end of the property and two waterways running through it, Cotovsky sees great promise.

Moves worship time to 10:15 a.m.

Local musician Jamey Young will return to Oregon United Methodist Church as director of music ministry, beginning Oct. 13.

The church will also begin Sunday worship services at 10:15 a.m., starting Oct. 13, moving its Sunday school time to 9 a.m., said the congregation’s pastor Megan Smick.

“We’re very excited. We know Jamey brings some special gifts that will really add depth and meaning to our worship,” she said. “We would like to emphasize the joyful in worship, and we think Jamey will bring a fun and light-hearted approach.”

Young previously served OUMC for several years as choir director and piano accompanist before leaving in 2000 to form Spirit’s Harmony, an a cappella gospel quartet.

Teen taken into custody for making school threat

An Oregon teenager was taken into limited custody Sept. 25 after he apparently made threats of a school shooting on social media.

According to a press release fro Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan, the 15-year Oregon High School student has been charged with disorderly conduct and has been released to his parent’s custody.

“Based on the investigation we do not feel there was an immediate threat to students or staff,” DeHaan said in the statement.

Police were notified after students at David L. Rahn Junior High advised school staff that they had observed a social media post discussion on Snapchat the night before,

alluding to a threat of a school shooting by the student taken into custody.

The high school staff and school resource officer immediately began investigating the incident.

“We take these types of threats against the safety of our schools, staff, and students very seriously.

I would like to commend the student(s) who had the courage to speak up and bring this to the attention of school staff so the issue could be safely resolved,” DeHaan said.

The matter has been referred to Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow for a petition for juvenile delinquency.

FUNDRAISING SUPPER Spaghetti supper Oct. 5 The Oregon Fire Department will be the place to eat Saturday night during the 2018 Autumn on Parade festival.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the department will host a spaghetti supper from 4-7

p.m. at the station, located at 100 West Washington Street.

Volunteer firefighters will serve the dinner in the main bay of the fire station.

Free will donations will be accepted for the supper which includes, spaghetti, salad, rolls, and beverages.

However, a college music theory class opened up his understanding of the structure of music and made it meaningful.

“I thought, ‘You mean there’s a method and an organization to music?’ That class unleashed everything for me, and suddenly I felt free and found expression through music,” he said.

Young attended Kishwaukee College and Illinois State University and majored in horticulture and agribusiness. Today he works as a water and wastewater specialist for Integrated Public Resources LLC, a firm based in Neenah, Wisconsin.

And he has been serving in churches since he was 24, when he began leading the contemporary service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Oregon, where he continues to lead music at 9 a.m.

“We’re pleased to have Jamey and look forward to his many talents being used here,” said Lee Meyers, head of the OUMC staff/parish committee. “We think he will be an asset to the church and really help us minister to the community.”

Oregon council discusses change in government

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Residents of Oregon could be asked sometime in the future in they want a different form of city government.

Commissioner Terry Schuster said Sept. 24 that he recommends the city manager form after recently attending sessions on the topic at the Illinois Municipal League convention.

He said that as city government gets more complicated, he believes hiring a professional manager makes sense.

“There’s less likelihood of corrup-

tion, for one thing,” he said.

Commissioner Kurt Wilson, who also attended the convention, agreed.

Mayor Ken Williams said he also supports the city manager form but changing to it would require a referendum.

“It’s not up to us. Our citizens decide that,” he said.

Illinois statutes allow five forms on municipal government — commissioner form, which Oregon currently has; manager form; aldermanic - city form, such as Polo operates under; the trustee - village form used in Mt. Morris and Forreston; and the strong mayor form.

The commission form is limited to municipalities with populations under 200,000.

This form allows voters to elect a mayor and four commissioners who serve as the council. At the first regular meeting after an election, the council designates each member to serve the commissioner of a department.

All five council members are elected every four years.

The manager form is available to all municipalities under 500,000 in population.

The municipality may retain its governmental structure as an aldermanic - city form, trustee - village form or commission form while adopting by referendum the features of the manager form.

Under this form, the power of the council or board is purely legislative, except that it is empowered to approve all expenses and liabilities of the municipality.

A manager hired by the council is the administrative and executive head of the government for some purposes. The manager can appoint and remove all officers not required

to be elected.

Williams compared the manager form to how school districts operate with the superintendent in charge of day-to-day operations.

In another matter, the council discussed snow removal from downtown sidewalks.

Williams recommended hiring a firm to remove the snow from in front of all businesses in the downtown and then charging the affected businesses a maintenance fee on their water bills.

In other business, the council approved collecting sales tax from cannabis-related businesses and referred ordinances governing those businesses to the Planning Commission.

A state law passed by the Illinois General Assembly this summer will allow Illinoisans who are 21 or older to legally possess 30 grams (about one ounce) of cannabis for recreational use.

Medical marijuana dispensaries will be the only legal sellers of marijuana for recreational use at first, but by mid-2020, the state is expected grant additional licenses.

The Oregon United Methodist Women will again hold their annual White Elephant Sale during Autumn on Parade weekend.

Hours and days are Friday, Oct. 4 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The sale is held inside the handicapped accessible Family Life Center of the OUM Church.

The sale includes children’s toys, holiday decor, household items, small furniture, tools, books, jewelry, a table of special collectable items, plus much, much more.

The church is at the corner of Illinois 2 and Jefferson Street, just south of the Food Court. Proceeds from this sale fund annual donations to local agencies.

Build-A-Barn will hold a Spooktacular Horse Expo on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ogle County Fairgrounds, 1440 N. Limekiln Rd., Oregon.

Spooktacular is a Build-A-Barn event to raise money to build an exhibition horse barn at the fairgrounds. The public is invited to bring their horses or come to watch.

A fun show with miniature horses and ponies will start on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Chaplain Jay LaRette, will present the message from horseback during Cowboy Church on Sunday at 9 a.m. Music for the church will be by Spare Change.

The show will feature minis and ponies on Saturday and horses and drafts on Sunday in the horse arena.

Watch the horses navigate the “Trail of Terror“ obstacle class.

The horses and handlers will dress up and compete for cash in the Costume Class.

Demonstrations include a trick rider, mounted shooting, reining, a six mini horse hitch, reining, and much more.

Miniature horses to draft horses will be featured in our Parade of Breeds. Learn about your favorite horse during the breed presentation.

Enjoy the petting zoo. Find a treasure in the tack sale, craft sale, and flea market.

The Eagle’s Nest Art Group will open its studio in Conover Square Mall for their annual fall show on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The art show takes place during Oregon’s Autumn On Parade festival. It is a one-day only event.

The group of more than 60 local artists will have a variety of original art work on display, including oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings; drawings; calligraphy; glass work; jewelry; ceramics; fiber art and photography.

Large art pieces as well as smaller originals will be for sale. A wide variety of prints and cards will also be available.

The group continues to support Hands On Oregon with original art for sale to benefit the work of HOO in the community.

Eighth Illinois Governor moved to Oregon in 1835 Thomas Ford moved to a cabin on property owned by city’s founder, John Phelps Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Illinois Governor Thomas Ford from Oregon was our eighth governor from 1842-1846.

He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, in 1800, 18 years before Illinois was founded in 1818.

In 1835 he moved to a cabin on property owned

by John Phelps, founder of Oregon.

Two years later he moved to North Third Street in Oregon.

He served as a judge on the Illinois Supreme Court. While holding court in Ogle County, he was notified he had been nominated Governor of Illinois.

Shortly after his nomination he was elected Governor on Dec. 8, 1842. Ford County is named after him.

Out of the 43 governors in Illinois, Ford and Lowden came from Ogle County and we have no mention of that on the Ogle County Court House Square.

The following is a summary of our seven governors who served before Thomas Ford.

1. Shadrach Bond, our first Governor of Illinois served one term from 1818-1822.

He was born in Maryland and died at Kaskaskia, our first capitol.

As governor he made transportation his top priority. He signed a bill to build a privately operated toll road across the state from Illinois’ capital Kaskaskia to Shawneetown, the state’s largest city located on the Ohio River.

Bond County is named after him.

2. Edward Coles served one term 1822-1826.

He was born in Virginia, the son of a prominent plantation owner. When he moved to Illinois he freed his slaves giving them a Certificate of Freedom.

During his time in office he helped defeat a bill legalizing slavery in Illinois.

Cole County is named after him.

3. Ninian Edwards served one term 1826-1830.

During his term problems between the settlers and Native Americans resulted in the little war known as the “Winnebago War.” Two years after he left office the Indian troubles ended with the Black Hawk War of 1832.

4. John Reynolds served one term from 18301834.

He was of Irish descent and born in Maryland.

As governor he worked to advance education and make internal improvements, the Illinois and Michigan Canal and the harbor at Chicago.

5. William Ewing was born in Kentucky and served as governor for 15 days in 1834 after Gov.

In 1823 while serving as Lieutenant Governor he lost $1,000 when the State Bank was robbed.

6. Joseph Duncan from Kentucky served one term as governor from 1834-1838.

He earned a rank of Major General against the British in the War of 1812.

He was associated with the bill providing for a free school system.

During his time in office the capital was moved from Vandalia to Springfield.

7. Thomas Carlin served one term as governor from 1838-1842.

He was born in Kentucky and moved to Illinois in 1812.

During his time in office the Judicial system was reorganized and five additional Supreme Court Judges were elected which included Thomas Ford from Oregon.

In 1840 the Mormons were removed from Missouri to Nauvoo, Illinois. He opposed monopolies and wanted the state to own and operate all rail-

roads.

The city of Carlinville is named in his honor.

Our first eight governors were not born in Illinois. Six governors served a full four-year term while two served partial terms.

Ninian Edwards, our third Governor also served as the Governor of the Illinois Territory when it was organized in 1809 until we became a state in 1818.

The Capital of the Illinois Territory was Kaskaskia. Illinois was 24 years old when Thomas Ford was governor.

Earl Hagemeyer receives 4-H Foundation Honor Esmond man is recognized for his volunteer efforts An Ogle County volunteer was honored for their service as a 4-H volunteer.

Earl Hagemeyer of Esmond was one of 80 volunteers recognized by the Illinois 4-H Foundation as a 4-H Hall of Fame recipient during a ceremony Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.

“These volunteers fully embody what 4-H strives to instill in youth,”

said Angie Barnard, Illinois 4-H Foundation executive director.

“They are caring, dedicated, generous leaders, and the Illinois 4-H Foundation is extremely proud to be able to provide this honor to thank them for their service to this wonderful organization.”

The Illinois 4-H Foundation established the statewide Hall of Fame in 2004 to honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers, and former 4-H staff. Each inductee receives a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion.

“As a result of these volunteers’ years of service and leadership to Illinois 4-H,” Barnard said, “the program they love will continue to cre-

ate wonderful opportunities for the young people whose lives it touches.”

“The Foundation provides avenues to support the work of Illinois 4-H by accepting financial gifts specifically directed to the program you wish to support,” Barnard said.

“Estate planning services are available to those wishing to continue their 4-H legacy.”

Ogle County Master Gardeners host Bark Project The Ogle county Master Gardeners Therapeutic Horticulture committee joined residents of Oregon Living and Rehabilitation along with the Village of Progress to educate and craft on Sept. 19.

Master Gardeners Nettie Weston of Rochelle, Kathy Michel of Byron, Leah Patapack of Oregon, and Mary Korth of Creston along with helper Mary Sweeney of Oregon helped to make and design fall door hangers.

Along with the door hangers, they presented the educational component on bark! The Master Gardeners truly enjoyed giving back to the community and sharing their wealth of knowledge.

Jacques Saint-Cyr will perform at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Morris. cities across North America.

In 1997, Jacques and Maria E Castello created “It takes Three to Tango”, a stage production with dance and live music based on the history of Argentine Tango. This production has been presented in many cities in Canada and the United States.

Jacques Saint-Cyr has performed in France, Canada and the United States. Jacques joined the Rockford community in 2003. He is on the faculty at the Music Academy in Rockford, Rockford University and Rock Valley College.

Trinity Lutheran Church will offer a musical journey into Argentine Tango music on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.

The concert will showcase a variety of styles that have perpetuated Tango as one of the most popular music in the world.

This concert will feature Jacques Saint-Cyr, flute and Erik Olson, piano.

Jacques Saint-Cyr obtained a Bachelor of Arts in music education from University of Quebec in Montreal and a Master of Arts in flute performance from the University of Montreal under the direction of Lise Daoust.

A two-time recipient of a grant from the French Government, Jacques Saint-Cyr studied flute in Paris with Raymond Guiot and baroque flute with Jean-Christoph Frish.

Returning from his studies in Paris in 1993, he began dancing Tango. He has studied with Argentine master teachers. From 1996 to the current year, Jacques has worked as a guest teacher in many

Performing Arts Center. He played as a freelance musician with many ensembles and choirs in Rockford: Trinity Lutheran Church, Unitarian Universalist Church Choir, Kantorei, Second Congregational United Church of Christ and First Free Church. Jacques is first flute and soloist for the Rockford Wind Ensemble since 2012.

Erik Olson is a producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist from the Chicagoland area.

A fourth generation pianist, he began studying with Linda Poquette while garnering a relationship with Lewis University.

With performances from Indiana to Colorado, he continued his tutelage under the direction of instructors including Marylin Taggart and Dr. James Breckinridge of Southwestern State University in Weatherford, OK. Following a run of soldout shows with Monica Raymund, including Space (Evanston), Andy’s (Chicago), and Joe’s Pub (Manhattan, New York), he began his foray into the magical world of Tango.

Most recently, his production work and original composition was featured on FOX 32 in Chicago. Erik resides in Morris with his wife, four children, and two dogs.

There is no charge for the concert, but a free will offering will be taken.

A reception will follow the program.

First Fridays performance is Oct. 4 in Mt. Morris

US Air Force Band concert at NIU Oct. 7 Event is free The United States Air Force Band of Mid-America Concert Band will perform on Monday, Oct. 7, at 8 p.m., in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall at Northern Illinois University’s Music Building.

This free concert will showcase this diverse, 45-piece ensemble whose repertoire ranges from symphonic band masterworks, to traditional marches, to modern compositions, to pops and jazz.

Stirring works from contemporary composers as well as the

familiar sounds of John Philip Sousa or Major Glenn Miller are all part of the concert.

The band features talented vocal soloists, performing a wide variety of popular, classical, and patriotic selections.

This October they will be presenting music in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing as well as vocal selections from The Wizard of Oz, The Wiz, and Wicked in celebration of the 80th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz.

BRIEFS VOP Foundation scholarship The Village of Progress Foundation is offering a $500, one-year scholarship to be awarded at their annual banquet scheduled on Wednesday, Oct. 16.

The financial status of the applicant is not a consideration.

To be eligible, the student must be a resident of Ogle County, be either a high school senior who is disabled or is planning on attending college and majoring in an area related to the disabled, or a full-time undergraduate college student who is disabled or is majoring in an area related to the disabled.

Applications must be received by Tuesday, Oct. 1, be completed on the foundation application form, and

include at least three written references.

First Fridays will provide a musical opening to the Autumn on Parade weekend on Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. at its usual location, the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center, 101 Moose Dr. in Mt. Morris.

The First Fridays format features each musician (or band) taking 15 minutes at center stage and continuing until each group has been featured.

Instruments are all acoustic and professional sound system engineering is provided by Mike Bratt.

Talented musicians from across Northern Illinois, and often neighboring states, appear on a regular basis.

The music is varied and includes country, bluegrass, blues, gospel, folk, soft rock, and eclectic mixes of all of the above.

“Participation is encouraged so bring your instrument and join the show, or relax and just enjoy the music. Bring a friend and enjoy some great music,” said Ron Colson, organizer.

Polo firefighters offer plenty to eat at their annual hog roast on Oct. 12 The Polo Firefighters Association will host its annual hog roast and open house on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Polo Fire Station.

A quarter beef and a freezer will be raffled at the event.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at the ambulance station in Polo,

or from any Polo firefighter for $5 each.

Pink Heals of the Sauk Valley will also attend the event.

Polo firefighters will do a burn simulation.

Donations will be accepted at the door.

The John Deere Historic Site in Grand Detour will celebrate the harvest season with its annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Guests can enjoy a variety of fall activities and can decorate pumpkins, bob for apples, play a variety of old-fashioned kids games and tour the grounds and exhibits while at the site.

This year’s event will also feature covered wagon rides throughout the day and a petting zoo with farm animals.

The historic site offers free admission for this family outing.

Be sure to bring cameras to capture seasonal photos of the kids and family.

Staff at the site will also be dressed in pioneer-era costumes, adding to the historic ambiance experienced while strolling through more than six acres of John Deere’s original Illinois homestead.

“This time of year provides an exceptional opportunity to celebrate

the harvest season and enjoy the beauty surrounding the John Deere Historic Site,” said Kristen Veto, manager of the John Deere Historic Site. “In addition to all of our Fall Fest activities, our blacksmith will also conduct demonstrations throughout the day and our guides will offer tours throughout the site.

It’s a perfect opportunity to learn more about where the legend of John Deere began.”

Fall Festival attendees should also register for the John Deere Attraction’s Passport Program while at the historic site.

The new program, launched earlier this year, is designed to help guests commemorate their trips to visit John Deere by collecting seals and stamps in their personal passport booklet.

Visitors can tour the Chana School on Saturday, also located at Park East. This unique two-room school, built in 1883, is celebrating its 136th birthday this year. Lunch will also be available on site.

SPECIAL EVENTS AOP 5K and Fun Run is Sunday The 14th Annual Autumn on Parade 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run is set for Sunday, Oct. 6.

One-mile runners will begin the day at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K participants at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Registration for the 1 Mile Fun Run is $10.

Strollers will be allowed on the race course, but must start after all runners.

No pets, bicycles, or scooters allowed on the course.

There will be an availability to register at the early packet pick-up Oct. 5 from 2-5 p.m. at Oregon Elementary School in

Scouts begin fall popcorn sales Oregon and Mt. Morris Cub Pack 81 and Boy Scout Troop 52 have started their fall popcorn order sale, which continues until Oct. 29.

The ordered popcorn will be delivered around Nov. 16.

The scouts are doing a show and sell on Saturday, Oct. 5 at Autumn on Parade on the Oregon United Methodist Church lawn.

Some of the popcorn products will be available for purchase and you can take them with you.

The members of Boy Scout Troop 52 are also taking orders for Christmas wreaths and roping, which will be delivered around Nov. 23.

It appears Mother Nature will be right on cue this weekend when Oregon hosts the 49th annual Autumn on Parade festival.

With temperatures forecast in the 60s, the ever-popular festival will be held Oct. 5-6 offering visitors their usual favorites — unique craft booths, an Olde English Faire in the backdrop of a castle, a 100+ unit parade, and, of course, plenty of treats to eat.

“We’ve been working all year since the 2018 festival planning this year’s event,” said AOP President Marseyne Snow. “We’ve been very, very busy finalizing details for the festival. We have our great traditional line-up of entertaining activities geared to please everyone.”

The heart of Autumn on Parade is its Farmer’s Market and Craft Fair, located on the Ogle County Courthouse Square and surrounding streets in downtown Oregon.

Handmade, homemade and homegrown items as well as many other kinds of unique items are available for purchase from the 180-plus vendors.

The booth layout will be a little different this year due to the construction of the new Ogle County Jail with some booths moved to the parking lot at Fifth and Washington.

“We are currently filled to our capacity with booths so there should be something for everyone,” said Snow.

On Saturday, antique tractors and classic cars will be on display at Oregon Park East, just across the Rock River on River Road.

Owners of Olivers, Farmalls, and Deeres are more than willing to share the history of their tractors.

Stillman Valley rallies after early Oregon score

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com This battle of the birds was closer than expected, but in the end, the Cardinals simply had too much for the Hawks.

Stillman Valley, ranked No. 3 in the latest Class 4A poll, had to withstand a run from a fired-up bunch from Oregon before pulling away for a 35-7 win Friday night under threatening skies at Landers-Loomis Field. The game was moved up to a 5 p.m. start, to beat anticipated inclement weather.

The Cardinals (5-0) scored 35 unanswered points after spotting the Hawks an early 7-0 lead. Oregon (0-5) did not resemble a team that had been routed in four previous games.

“We’re rockin’ with 17 varsity players,” Oregon junior running back Wylee Rice said. “The sophomores will come in here and there, but not much. We don’t have many bodies, but we tried our hardest.”

“I think we took a step forward,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman added. “Our effort was great, but our margin for mistakes is very slim.

We can’t make mistakes and bounce back from them, unfortunately. We almost have to be perfect offensively, but unfortunately, we made some mistakes that took us out of drives.”

Stillman Valley coach Mike Lalor was impressed with the Hawks’ effort.

“Oregon played outstanding,” Lalor said.”I think it’s a credit to their program and coach Schneiderman. If you can keep kids playing hard - they haven’t got their first

Oregon had a dream start to the game. It forced a 3-and-out by Stillman Valley’s offense, then went to work when it got the ball. Rice carried the ball for 11, 10 and 10 yards the first three times he got the ball, and the Hawks quickly got into the red zone.

Rice capped off a 13-play, 66-yard march by plunging in from the 1 on

fourth down with 3:38 remaining in the first quarter.

Stillman Valley responded with a long march of its own, capped off by a 3-yard run by Logan Jennings early in the second quarter.

The score remained 7-7 until a tide-turning series of events.

With 4 minutes left in the second quarter, Oregon had a third-and-3 play from its own 42. Rice got the call on a sweep to the right and he had all kinds of room to run, but instead slipped and fell at the 41. A

Forreston third at Polo: The Lady Cardinals went 5-3 to finish third behind first place Dakota (8-0) and second place West Carroll (6-2) at the eightteam Polo Tournament on Sept. 28. Polo was 3-5.

The all-tournament team included Marah Blake of Polo, Kara Erdmann of Forreston, Madison Haynes and Natalie Hughes of West Carroll, Grace Steines of

50-yard punt gave the ball back to Stillman Valley on its own 9 with 3:40 on the clock.

On second down, Cardinals QB Chad Gerig got loose on a perfectly executed option play and went 90 yards up the right sideline for a touchdown and a 14-7 lead.

The Hawks, however, fought back.

Starting from their own 36, they marched down the field and got as close as the Stillman Valley 21. On second down, quarterback Breccan Berns found Ryker Finch at the goalline with a potential TD pass, only to have it slip through Finch’s hands.

“I’m pretty sure it was tipped, and then it hit me in the face and I dropped it,” Finch said. “That was on me. I should have caught that one.”

The last play of the half also went to Finch, but the ball sailed out of bounds to leave it 14-7 at halftime.

Stillman Valley’s offense seized control after halftime. The Cardinals scored on their first three possessions, on short runs by Logan Lagerhausen and Jennings, as well as a 12-yard pass from Gerig to Joe Kuthe, to make it 35-7 with 8:13 to go.

Oregon, meanwhile, had some success moving the ball in between the 20s after halftime, but could not dent the scoreboard.

Rice finished with 19 carries for 89 yards to lead the Hawks, while Berns added 16 carries for 79 yards.

Berns also completed 6 of 18 passes for 32 yards, with one interception.

Gerig had four rushes for 101 yards to pace a balanced Stillman Valley attack. Luke Frost (7-54), Devin Willis (7-50) and Jennings (1447) were the other top rushers.

Forreston Cardinals power past Missiles 54-8

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Last year, Forreston escaped with an overtime playoff win at Milledgeville on its way to a state title.

A return trip to Floyd Daub Field resulted in a far different result.

This one was over at halftime with Forreston up 54-8. A few minutes of the second half were played before officials called the game because of inclement weather.

“We took a step back after losing a strong senior class. Forreston didn’t,” Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble said.

The Missiles defense did offer early resistance to Forreston’s vaunted ground attack, forcing the Cardinals into three straight thirddown situations on the first possession.

“Milledgeville does some good things on defense and are disciplined,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said. “Eventually, we got things to open up.”

With the Missiles selling out for the run, Forreston quarterback Bailey Cullor lofted a 25-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Jordan Neuschwander for a 6-0 lead.

Forreston rarely throws, but when they do Cullor has exhibited a deft touch.

Defensive back Lukas Lingel quickly set up Forreston for another score with a 40-yard interception return to the 5-yard line. Two plays later Dom Christensen crossed the goal line for a 14-0 advantage.

With Forreston attempting different types of kickoffs, Milledgeville had decent field position at the 40-yard line on its next possession.

However, negative yardage forced the second of four 3-and-outs in the first half and Forreston soon rang up its third TD on a 44-yard Braden Politsch run.

“Forreston is number one in the state for a reason,” said Wroble.

“They’re methodical and physical.”

The Missiles put together a 76-yard scoring drive to close to within 22-8.

It was Nick Smith leading the way with four straight completions.

A Marcus McKenna 11-yard catch moved the chains for the first time and Connor Eubanks followed up with a 12-yard grab. Both are part of the Polo wrestling co-op, along with kids from Forreston.

Smith scrambled for another first down before hitting Ryan Kendall with a 38-yard touchdown. The pair added a PAT and it was down to a 22-8 lead.

“That was a nice drive,” Wroble said. “To get a touchdown against a team as good as Forreston is a big

Cullor did one better with his second TD pass, this time to Cayden Shelton for 37 yards. Shelton was one of several running backs that got carries for a program that traditionally rotates six to eight backs.

“It’s a luxury we’ve had at Forreston,” said Zick. “If you’re a running back here, you’ve got a good shot to get on the field.”

A Derek DeVries sack of Smith resulted in a punt. Earlier in the game, strongman DeVries was humorously flagged for grabbing one of his running backs by the jersey and dragging him one-handed three extra yards.

Neuschwander made it 38-8 on a short run and then Christensen, hero of Forreston’s playoff semifinal win over Lena-Winslow, went 83 yards on the first play from scrimmage after a long Missile punt.

Already ahead 46-8 with 2 minutes left in the half, Forreston caught a break when it recovered an errant punt snap at the 10-yard line.

Neuschwander tacked on his third touchdown for the 54-8 lead, with the half coming to end and heavy rain on its way.

“As a young team, we’re taking a lumps,” Wroble said. “Forreston controlled the line of scrimmage on

both sides of the ball.”

Milledgeville fell to 0-5 and 0-3 in the NUIC South, while Forreston

(5-0, 3-0) remained unbeaten with an October 11 date looming against Le-Win, ranked No. 2 in 1A.

No, not that there was a storm coming, but like so many lopsided games in the NUIC, this would simply be a glorified practice for Forreston.

I will go as far as to say that the Cardinals may get a better workout in practice scrimmages than they have lately against the likes of Galena, AFC, Amboy and Milledgeville.

It was another romp for Polo in 8-man and perhaps the biggest challenge this season is adjusting to a new way of living.

After decades of playing 11-man football against teams from the local area, it has become a new frontier for Polo. They are real pioneers in giving credibility to a brand of football that is still finding its way.

When Polo first made the announcement they were going to 8-man, the fledging league got a huge boost.

When 8-man eventually gets on its feet and I truly believe it will, it will be Polo that made the difference and that is something for the school to be proud of.

As expected, Milford and Polo are the cream of the crop in 8-man and appear headed to a state championship final. Both are the only unbeaten teams left and like Polo, Milford is winning by wide margins.

Here was an interesting score: Morrison 18 Newman 6.

With an enrollment of 270, Morrison would likely be in the 1A playoffs and give the top dogs in the NUIC something else to worry about. A couple other intriguing 1A schools are the ever-present Aurora

Christian and upstart Chicago Hope Academy.

Both play odd schedules and are not shoo-ins to get five wins. In successive weeks, Hope traveled to California and Missouri for games.

Aurora plays Elmhurst Catholic and Kankakee McNamara, two schools that reached the 4A state final.

With the regular season becoming such a preliminary for teams like

Forreston, it’s never too early to look ahead to the post season. This year promises to be quite interesting in the northern quadrant of 1A. The first post season of any sport kicks off next week with golf regionals. In reviewing scores this season, high school golf in small to midrange schools is regressing.

A couple of factors at play – not as many kids interesting in golf anymore and the closing of courses.

efore we get into sports, I wish to honor a muchesteemed colleague. This past Friday was Vinde Wells’ last day on the job as the News Editor for the Forreston, Mt. Morris, Oregon and Polo weekly newspapers.

Working tirelessly behind the scenes for 30+ years, Vinde leaves us as someone who never gave less than 100 percent.

With all the challenges facing the newspaper business, Vinde kept plugging away to put out a quality product.

The Leaf River resident did it humbly, professionally and with attitude of servitude to you the reader. I am grateful to having worked with Vinde Wells.

Before heading to the Miledgeville-Forreston football game, I caught the first part of Oregon and Stillman Valley at 5 p.m.

It was a much-improved effort by the Hawks in giving SV all they could handle in the first half. Of any team on the schedule, Oregon somehow plays Stillman the toughest, at least for the first half.

It has been said that certain teams match up better with others and that is probably the case for Oregon when it faces SV. Especially impressive was an opening drive that gave the Hawks a 7-0 lead and the game could have easily been tied at halftime.

As was the case the last couple years, SV’s superior depth wore Oregon down in the second half.

Nonetheless, an inspired effort for a team that finally has some winnable games coming up. Next week’s opponent, Rock Falls, is on a downward spiral and it will be interesting to see how this one stacks up.

As I drove over to Milledgeville with an impending storm on the way, I had to question what’s the point?

Almost all microplastics end up in our oceans, either from plastic waste that ends up there or from microplastics that flow into the oceans from rivers and streams.

These tiny particles are even getting into our bodies.

Most of us can easily discard the hard plastic into recycling bins, but what about film plastic?

The largest market for plastic today is in packaging which is used once and thrown away.

The trash from these packaging materials accounts for almost half of all plastic waste generated globally.

Film plastic can be described as any plastic that can be flattened and wad-

ded up into a ball.

What is one solution? The Mt. Morris and Oregon Indivisible Group is working with civic and non-profit organizations in both communities to recycle film plastic and earn Trex benches.

Trex (www.Trex.com) is a company that uses plastic to create products such as decking, porch rails, fences and lawn furniture.

Communities are invited to participate in the program by donating 500 pounds of film plastic within six months in exchange for each bench.

We are seeking help from everyone in our communities to contribute their film plastic waste for recycling in order to keep it out of the landfills,

PUBLIC VOICE Recycle plastic bags at several locations Dear Editor, The amount of plastic drifting on and in our oceans is alarming.

World production of plastics has increased exponentially since 1950 to about 450 million tons in 2015 and it continues to grow.

It is predicted that by the middle of the century there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

What is the lifespan of all that plastic?

Even more alarming is the staggering amount of microplastics, the tiny fragments that all plastics eventually break down into but never completely

oceans and, even more importantly, out of our bodies.

The Byron Forest Preserve District and the Northern Illinois Players Troupe will present a “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” themed murder mystery dinner at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum on Saturday, Oct.19 starting at 6 p.m.

The Jarrett Prairie Center is located at 7993 North River Road in Byron.

The mystery dinner will feature the characters from Washington Irving’s story that will include school teacher Ichabod Crane, beau-

tiful and rich Katrina Van Tassel, her suitor Brom Bones and others from this classic Halloween tale.

The program will feature a catered buffet dinner and a cash bar. Guests will be seated at tables of eight people.

The program is designed for ages 12 and up. Advance registration is required.

Flu vaccines will be available from the Ogle County Health Department for a $35 fee.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Sept. 23 Isabella Tranchina, 16, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 7:54 a.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred at the intersection of 10th and Jefferson Streets.

Sept. 24 Darrell J. Logan, 47, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 5:02 a.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

Graeme A.F. Lints, 63, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 2:54 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred at the intersection of W. Washington Street and Oregon Trail Road.

Robert L. Swint, 41, of Oregon, was arrested at 8:18 p.m. for violating orders of protection. Swint was transported

to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. 5th Street.

Sept. 25 Shelly M. Jones, 48, of Whitewater, Wisconsin, was arrested at 8:56 p;.m. for driving while license revoked. A passenger in Jones’ vehicle, William L. Jones, 53, also of Whitewater, was issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. Shelly Jones was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 1500 block of N. IL Route 2.

Sept. 26 At 12:09 a.m., police took one 17-yearold male juvenile into limited custody for violating the curfew ordinance. The juvenile was released into his parent’s care with a referral to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office to review for juvenile delinquency.

This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 3rd Street.

Sept. 27 At 4:30 p.m., police responded to a domestic battery call the 300 block of S. 6th Street resulting in the arrest of Devin S. Bailey, 36, of Mt. Morris, for aggravated domestic battery, resisting a peace officer, and driving while license revoked. Bailey was also issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. Bailey was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 28 Jacob T. Hagemann, 20, of Mt. Morris, was issued citations at 5:34 p.m. for speeding, 46 mph in a 30 mph zone, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

These violations occurred in the 100 block of N. Daysville Road.

Joshua Williams, 37, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 11:20 p.m. for operating a vehicle with no valid registration. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Sept. 29 Hauer C. Williams,18, of Polo, was

issued a citation at 2:14 p.m. for unlawful window tint. This violation occurred in the 600 block of W. Washington Street.

Five parking citations and seven verbal/written warnings were issued Sept.

23-29.

Sept. 27 Jamie Gasper-Hernandez, 48, of Rochelle, was arrested at 5:50 a.m. for no valid drivers license after a traffic stop at Stone Hill Road and Illinois 64 for an equipment violation. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Sept. 28 Kieth Britsch, 54, of Oregon, was arrested at 10 p.m. for driving while license revoked following a traffic stop in the 7600 block of North River Road.

Britsch was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Sept. 29 At 3:05 p.m. deputies conducted a traffic stop for a registration violation at Willow Road and 1st Street, in Forreston.

She was transported to a Juvenile Detention Center where she will be held pending a court appearance.
