Bison stars again at Autumn on Prairie Hundreds visit Nachusa Grasslands on Saturday

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Bison were once again the stars at the annual Autumn on the Prairie festival Saturday at the Nachusa Grasslands.

By noon, nearly 360 people had taken wagon tours to see the herd that has grown from 30 to 130 in the last four years, and at least 100 more already had their tickets.

“The bison were very close. We had to stop for them — they were right on the path,” said one rider excitedly as she came back from the ride out into the prairie.

Bison booth volunteer LuAnn McFadden said visitors were getting a good look at the shaggy residents of the Grasslands.

“The bison are very familiar with the tractors [pulling the wagons. Sometimes if the staff needs the check to herd over, they will take them treats,” she said. “So the bison will sometimes come up to the tractors.”

Bill Kleiman, restoration project director at the Grasslands, said the event drew an estimated 800 people, 670 of whom took bison tours.

Temperatures approaching 90 degrees by mid-afternoon under almost cloudless skies didn’t appear to discourage the crowd.

“It was warm, but the event went off very well,” Kleiman said.

Under the many tents sheltering displays and vendors, 3-year-old Gideon Majka-Lauterbach, of Brookfield, was fascinated with a glass case of raptor eggs.

“Mom, mom, look at that!” he said, tugging on her sleeve.

His mother Megan Lauterbach said friends who live in Amboy recommended the festival.

Many displays were geared especially for kids and were accompanied by signs reading “Yes, touch.”

Youngsters could handle the furs and skeletons of prairie wildlife, including foxes, raccoons, coyotes, and skunks.

Volunteer Mark Herman, of Oregon, said the crowd started coming an hour before the 10 a.m. opening.

“They were here well before we opened,” he said with a grin.

Rose Avey, of Mt. Morris, was taking in the Native American lore offered by storyteller Brian “Fox” Ellis, of St. Charles.

“I come whenever I can. I enjoy seeing everything here and the kettle corn,” she said, holding up a bag. “It’s beautiful day.”

Members of the Rock River Painters Guild were set up on a hill, the perfect vantage point for painting the prairie in full fall dress.

“We had the buffalo right out there a little bit ago,” said Jan Harvey, of Dixon.

Cindy Winterfield, of Lost Lake, said she comes every year to paint.

“It’s just beautiful and I’m a nature lover,” she said.

Elsewhere, volunteers were leading hikes, and visitors could take self-guid-

ed tours through the prairie, see live raptors, or try a bison burger at the food tent.

Kleiman said the efforts of the almost 90 volunteers and vendors made the day go smoothly.

“We’ve been doing this for almost 30 years,” he said.

Adding bison to the Grasslands in 2014 has increased attendance at Autumn on the Prairie since then he said.

Book sale will benefit library The Friends of the Oregon Library will once again hold its AOP book sale on Friday, Oct. 5 and Saturday, Oct. 6 from 8 p.m. to 3 p.m. or until books are sold out.

It will be held in front of the library, located at 300 Jefferson St. Donations of books will be accepted on Thursday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Encyclopedias, Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, and magazines cannot be accepted  for the sale.

Books will be sold by the bag: $5 for all the books that fit into a good-sized bag and $10 for all the books that fit into a larger red library tote bag.

The City of Byron’s population jumped by a third last week as more than 1,400 temporary workers traveled to the area in support of Exelon’s Byron Generating Station’s annual refueling outage.

Rock River Sweep has been rescheduled for Sept. 29 The 2018 Oregon Rock River Sweep has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept.

29 from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Check in will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Kiwanis Park, behind Conover Square, at the intersection of North Second Street and Franklin Street.

Volunteers are needed on foot or in boats to clean up a nine mile section of the Rock River, from north of the boat landing on Ill. 2 to the Castle Rock State Park boat landing, for this annual effort to protect and preserve this beautiful local resource.

Originally the event was set for Sept.

8, but flooding made that impossible.

“The recent high water has dislodged a considerable amount of trash, and much of it has been deposited on the banks at the high water mark,” said organizer Terry Schuster. “It is expected this will help us see and access the trash more easily.”

Refreshments will be available afterward. Gloves, safety vests, trash bags, bug spray, snacks and water will be available, as well as a limited number of T-shirts for sale.

Participants are encouraged to wear long sleeves, long pants, and old shoes, and to bring a reusable water bottle to the event to reduce waste.

During the outage, the Unit 1 cooling tower will not produce any water vapor cloud. This is normal when a unit is taken offline.

Byron’s Unit 2 reactor will continue to supply carbon-free electricity to customers during the Unit 1 outage.

With both units at full power, the site produces almost 2,500 megawatts, enough electricity to power more than two million average American homes.

Margaret Fuller visited her uncle in Oregon Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is the last in a series of articles about Margaret Fuller, who visited Oregon in 1843.

BY OTTO DICK In 1843 Margaret Fuller and her friend Sarah Clarke visited the Rock River Valley from July 1 to 6.

Margaret wanted to experience the area still known as the American Northwest, Chicago and Milwaukee and the countryside around them, and to visit her uncle William Fuller who lived in Oregon.

The journey began by boat, a five-and-a-half day voyage from Buffalo to Chicago.

After two weeks in Chicago, Margaret, Sarah, and William Clarke, Sarah’s brother, loaded a covered wagon and headed west.

Paula Blanchard describes this journey in her biography, “Margaret Fuller, From Transcendentalism to Revolution” : “The wagon was loaded down with provisions in case the settlers they stayed with could give them none.

“Drawn by two sturdy, prairie-wise horses who were equally at ease on the road or off it, they set a course straight across the untracked grasslands toward the Rock River country, where Margaret’s Uncle William Williams Fuller had settled years earlier.

“From there they traveled northeast to Belvidere, where her brother Arthur planned to open a school, and then back to Chicago.

“On this excursion which lasted approximately a fortnight, and on a subsequent shorter one to Wisconsin, Margaret came to

appreciate the limitless freedom of a landscape where there were no roads or fences or cultivated fields and where ‘Nature seems to have poured forth her riches so without calculation, merely mark the fullness of her joy.’

“Here too she came to realize the diversity of the people who were attracted to the west.

“In early July they arrived at Dixon’s Ferry (now Dixon) where she stayed a few days with friends. “Then as Margaret describes proceeded a day’s journey to a little town named Oregon by following the river northward to Oregon by way of an Indian trail named after Black Hawk.

‘How could the Indians let themselves be conquered, with such a country to fight for? How happy the Indians must have been. It is not long since they were driven away, and the ground, above and below is full of their traces.’

(Fuller 1843) “Since Uncle William was an unmarried gentleman and it was not proper to stay with unmarried men, Sarah and Margaret were hosted by a family who lived in a log cabin on the banks of the Rock River.

“Margaret describes it thus, ‘They lived on the bank opposite the town, and as their house was full, we slept in the town, and passing to and from morning and evening in their boats.

“Even though there were only about 200 residents of Oregon at that time, the community held a

“Margaret’s day included a visit to the bluff named Eagle’s Nest, dinner, ice cream, fireworks and a trip to town.

“Her party crossed the Rock River in a flotilla accompanied by fifing and drumming.”

Phelps built the summer kitchen at his home on what is now Ill. 64, midway between Oregon and Mt. Morris, on a farm now owned by Robert and Esther Mongan.

The Mongans donated the structure to the Ogle County Historical Society, which enlisted the help of Oregon

Together.

Plans call for the summer kitchen to be moved from its current site to Phelps Park on the southeast corner of Fifth and Franklin Streets in Oregon.

A concrete foundation has already been poured for the building.

The Village of Progress Foundation is seeking applications for a $500, one-year scholarship that will be awarded at its annual banquet on Wednesday, Oct. 17.  The financial status of the applicant is not a consideration.

To be eligible, the student must be a resident of Ogle County and be either a high school senior who is disabled or is planning on attending college and majoring in an area related to the disabled, or a full-time undergraduate college student who is disabled or is majoring in an area related to the disabled.

Applications must be received by Monday, Oct. 1, be completed on the foundation application form, and include at least three written references.  Those wishing an application should call the Village of Progress at 815-732-2126.

Attention kids! Make a scarecrow in workshop Oregon Park District, Village of Progress teaming up for event The Oregon Park District and the Village of Progress have teamed up to offer a creative, crafting class for ages kindergarten through third grade with an adult.

All classes are held on days off school and allows children to express their creativity and create projects out of recycled materials with consumers and staff from the Village of Progress, Oregon.

All classes will be held in the VOP workshop at 710 S. 13th Street, off of Pines Road, Oregon.

Kids will be working alongside people with developmental disabilities to create a season project that can be used to decorate their home. Each participant must be accompanied by an adult.

The first class will be held on Friday, Oct. 5 from 9:30-11 a.m.

Children will be making a scarecrow for decorating. Cost is $6 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $7 for non-residents.

The deadline to register is Sept. 28.

Other classes offered this winter include a snowman wall/door decoration on Jan. 18 and Valentine picture frame on Feb. 14.

These classes will offer a creative, fun experience for both child and adult.

Planning & Zoning Committee to discuss rules for solar farms

Classes will be held Sept. 26 & Oct. 10 Serenity Hospice and Home is offering a volunteer training course this fall. The course will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 26 and Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Serenity Home, 1658 S. Ill. 2, Oregon.  The class will include some hours of self-paced learning at home.

Serenity has a strong team of valued volunteers that help the organization run smoothly.  “We could not operate without our volunteers,� said Maia Johnson, Volunteer Coordinator for Serenity. “They are so appreciated and we enjoy having them with us in the home, at Angel Treasures, at The Shed, and working hands-on with patients in their homes.� Volunteering for hospice can mean many different things.  Some volunteers work inside the home helping with meals and laun-

dry.  Some volunteers enjoy interacting with patients and some of our volunteers work at Angel Treasures.  “Some people are a little nervous about working with hospice,� Johnson said. “But after a volunteer trains and gets started, they never regret it.�

his column is the second in a series that looks at general expectations for reading homework for different grade levels.

Last month we looked at supporting the earliest readers in preschool and kindergarten.

For this month, we’ll consider supporting first and second graders.

This will help us see the important role we play in supporting our children and grandchildren as they develop literacy skills.

Even though work on early literacy skills begins in preschool and kindergarten, first and second graders are still considered beginning readers.

As in any other skill we are learning, practice is essential.

For that reason, many teachers send home books that are appropriate for your child to read with only a little support from you.

Listening to your child or grandchild read those books to you provides extra practice.

The key for first and second graders is to practice reading a lot!

COMMENTARY Mary Gardner Reading Specialist Early reading books are filled with high frequency, or sight, words.

These are words that appear in a high percentage of all the texts we read, so being able to read them quickly makes the reading task easier.

First and second grade teachers may send home lists of sight words for your child to practice at home as well.

They can be made into flash cards or used in games like a memory game or bingo. Reading the books sent home helps build sight word knowledge, too.

Learning to read is hard work.

Reading the small books also helps young readers build confidence. It helps them stick with the task of learning to read.

Rereading easy, familiar texts

An eye exam is a good idea, especially if things are starting to look a little fuzzy around the edges.

builds fluency, and fluency is closely linked to understanding what we read. Early readers do learn to “sound out” or decode words they do not know.

However, the more words one can read automatically without sounding them out, the more the reading flows, and that makes it easier to comprehend what is being read.

It is important to note that the pictures in these early reading books support beginning readers.

They help carry the meaning, and it is always important to emphasize that what we read should make sense.

We can support this by talking about the pictures as we go, or even before the book is read. Sometimes looking at the pictures will help us I t figure out a word as well. is not “cheating” to look at the pictures.

Sometimes it seems that a child has memorized a book and does not even look at the words.

We can gently remind them to look at the print – that’s what reading is after all. Beginning readers can be encouraged to use their finger to follow along with the words to help them focus on the words.

The Grasslands offers visitors a

glimpse at what the pioneers saw when their covered wagons ventured into Ogle County 180 years ago.

The bison complete the picture grazing over 1,500 fenced acres, and enhance the ecosystem at the site.

Started more than three decades ago with less than 300 acres of partially over-grazed pastures, the

Grasslands has grown to 3,600 acres of native prairie plants and wildlife, restored largely through the efforts of volunteers.

The area is now the home of more than 700 native prairie plant species as well as many birds, insects, and reptiles, some of which are endangered.

Hawks take third at Salley Wessels Invitational Polo was seventh, Forreston tenth in 11-team event

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com It was a third-place finish for the Oregon golf team at the Sally Wessels Invitational on Saturday at Sunset Golf Course in Mt. Morris.

“We’re rounding into shape,” Oregon coach Jim Spratt said. “We just need to put all the scores together.

Not everyone is the best on the same day. It’s sporadic.”

Adam Merrill carded an 83 to place sixth individually.

“Adam’s finally getting his game back,” Spratt said. “He was having problems keeping the ball in the fairway. It’s coming around.”

Backing him up was Jackson Buck who has been on a hot streak lately.

Buck had an 88, good for 12th and had a 37 at Silver Ridge the week before in winning medalist honors at a triangular.

“Jackson has a precision game going for him,” Spratt said.

Other Oregon scorers at the invitational were Jarrett Dietrich with a 94 and Case Sellers at 101.

Rockford Christian won the 11-team event with a 318, 34 strokes better than second-place West Chicago. The Royal Lions took the top three individual places, with Riley Hogan’s 73 earning medalist honors by a whopping five strokes.

“They will be the team to beat at conference next week,” Spratt said. “The only other teams with a chance are Rock Falls with good balance among its top six and Winnebago with the best golfer in Marcus Smith.”

Oregon edged Stillman Valley 366 to 367 for third. Byron was sixth at 383 among BNC schools.

Polo had a 396, good for seventh

and Scott Prerost (95) and Caleb Scott (98) were able to break 100.

Lane Hopkins added a 100 and Hayden Bittinger a 103 for balanced scoring from the top four.

“I was happy at Wessels. Our goal was to beat two teams and we beat four,” Polo coach Don Reece said.

Two days later, Reece was even happier, as he had four golfer score in the 40s for the first time. Hopkins, Bittinger, Logan Albrecht and Lucas Hammond did that against Stockton

on Monday.

Forreston was 10th at the invitational with 424.

“We were hoping to finish a little better,” Forreston coach Matt Hanley said.

Mavric Rudy had a 101, Lane Linquist 104, James DeWall 107 and Joel Ludwig 112 for the scoring.

Hanley hopes to have Mark DeWall back in time for either the conference or regional. DeWall is recovering from hernia surgery.

BY ROB LAIRD Special to SVM You didn’t quite have to squint during Oregon’s game Friday night to see the reasons why Byron is the top-ranked football team in Class 3A, but if you blinked at the wrong moments of the Hawks’ 48-0 loss, you just might have missed them.

During large swaths of the first half, Oregon was able stand toeto-toe with the mighty Tigers, and moved the ball with commendable success, racking up six first downs and twice driving into Byron territory. Had one been watching closely during those stretches, a reasonable person could have concluded that either Oregon was underrated, or Byron wasn’t quite the fear-inducing behemoth its ranking suggests.

But then there were other moments – and there were plenty of them – that reminded you, like a smack in the back of the head, exactly why Byron is so highly regarded.

For example, there was a 71-yard touchdown pass from Ben Carlson to Drake Snodgrass that put Byron ahead 14-0 late in the first quarter.

And there was a 39-yard TD run right up the gut by Snodgrass to put the Tigers ahead 21-0 early in the second.

Oh, and a 95-yard touchdown reception – again by Snodgrass – with 2 minutes left in the first half for a 35-0 lead.

“Their speed is top-notch,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said.

“They hold their ground in pass protection. You think you’ve got things maybe bottled up, and all of a sudden, boom, there’s a little bit of a crease, and they hit the hole so fast.

It’s hard to mimic it [in practice].”

In the end, there were just far too many of those “boom” moments for Oregon to withstand, even with its modest ability to sustain offensive drives.

“We had opportunities to move the ball, but we stalled on our own,” Schneiderman said. “It was mostly self-inflicted, whether it be a botched snap, whether it be a penalty, whether it be a fumble. We did it to ourselves.”

The Hawks, who were still missing starting running back Jake Men-

nen to a knee injury suffered last week against Dixon, were led by Dalton Hermes’ 58 rushing yards.

Hermes, normally a fullback, had to learn a new position in the backfield this week in Mennen’s absence.

Zachary Crandall added 43 rushing yards on a team-high 15 carries as Oregon racked up 156 rushing yards in the game.

Snodgrass had a game-high 245 yards from scrimmage for Byron.

Oregon, which gave Dixon a run

for its money in Week 3, falls to 1-3, and its playoff hopes are suddenly in a bit of peril. Schneiderman knows that good efforts just aren’t going to be good enough as the team approaches the second half of the season.

“We’ve got to get better,” he said.

“We’ve got to win on first down. We can’t start our series on first-and-15 or second-and-10.”

It’s the first time Byron has shut out its rivals since 2003.

Oregon falls to Newman at Blackhawk Center

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@saukvalley.com For three sets, Oregon and Newman battled back and forth in a nonconference matchup at the Blackhawk Center on Tuesday.

After four ties in the first eight points of the third set, the Comets broke things open and came away with a 25-16, 17-25, 25-16 win over the Hawks.

After seeing Oregon control the second set, it was Newman in control for most of the third.

The third set was tied 1-1, 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 before Newman (9-3) reeled off the next four points thanks to a pair of kills from Bre Rosengren and a pair of Oregon hitting errors.

Oregon (7-4) got back to within two points at 9-7 and 10-8, but Newman again went on a run, scoring the next seven points.

Both teams looked for ways to contend with the big hitter on the other side of the net, and both saw mixed results throughout the night. Comets junior Aidan Brown had five kills in the first set alone, leading Newman to take the set.

Oregon senior Bailey Nelson took command of the second set, with two kills in the span of three points to put the Hawks up 11-3, and another kill later in the set.

Nelson finished her night with 10 kills.

“She’s super-aggressive,” Oregon coach Faith McNamee said. “She’s very tall and can jump high, so she hits high over the block and is super-hard to defend when she’s able to do that.”

Newman also had an eye on what Nelson was able to do at the net defensively. She had two blocks in the match. “[Nelson] is a great blocker, and it’s hard to get around her,” Newman’s Kiley Sanders said. “We realized we just had to place the ball and tip it if we needed to.”

After Brown’s big first set, Oregon looked to stop her in the second by using libero McKenna Sadler to dig up a lot of her spikes.

“When the ball was set for [Brown], she was hitting a lot crosscourt,” Oregon senior Abigail Hopkins said. “We adjusted our blocks.

We blocked more on the side because that’s where she was hitting.”

In the second set, the Hawks changed things up, adjusting both the blocking scheme and where they were attacking.

Oregon got off to a quick start in the second set with Jasmine Herbst starting things off with an ace. The Hawks scored the first five points of the set and before long led 11-3.

Marcos’ football up off the canvas...again L

ike a prize fighter down for the count, the Polo football team could have folded. Not once, not twice, but three times the Marcos have gotten up off the canvas.

The first time was when the announcement was made about going to 8-man football next year. It may have been easy to resign yourself to defeat, as the numbers at Polo were no longer there.

That wasn’t the case, as this year’s team took the opposite approach and decided to make the most out of the final year playing 11-man, even as shorthanded as they were.

The second time came in the first game against Orangeville when they fell behind by a couple scores and rebounded late in the contest to win.

This past Friday against Aquin, Polo was carrying the weight of past

For the third time, Polo got itself back on its feet and scored a thrilling comeback win over Aquin. It was a case of scrappy kids playing their hearts out.

Whoever needed to make a play on offense, those plays were made. On defense, coach Jeff Bumstead made the right calls to have players in the right positions.

There was an orchestration of

coaches and players coming together for a common good. That was the only way Polo was going to have a shot against Orangeville or Aquin.

In the first half against a Milledgeville team that is proving to be as good as expected, Polo held their own.

The Marcos are in excellent shape to close out the season as a playoff team, which has become the standard of achievement in Illinois high school football.

Aquin could be in jeopardy of missing the playoffs. The same with Stockton.

It is wide open between Orangeville, Stockton, Aquin and Polo in what is shaping up to be one of the evenly-matched Upstate division races ever.

The only given is that Milledgeville will likely finish undefeated.

Like Polo, Aquin has low numbers, with only five juniors and six seniors. Could they be the next NUIC school to play 8-man? Their sophomore quarterback would make a great QB in that format.

With Polo and River Ridge going to 8-man and Warren co-oping with a Wisconsin team next year, the conference needs to decide how the divisions will be realigned for football.

Nothing has been finalized, but the talk on the street is that a geographic breakdown is in the works.

Whether it is north-south or eastwest, who knows?

It will save lengthy trips, such as East Dubuque going four hours round trip to Amboy this week. But, how will small schools like Orangeville, Milledgeville and Aquin feel about facing the league heavyweights?

The annual North Central Illinois Solar Tour will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Sept. 10 Officers responded to a possession of tobacco complaint at the Oregon High School. At 6:51 p.m., during a follow-up to the above call, police issued a notice to appear to a male juvenile, 16, of Oregon, for violating Section 6-85.

Tobacco/(e) cigarette smoking by minor prohibited.

This violation occurred in the 200 block of South 10th Street.

Sept. 11 Mina Rocha, 66, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 2:30 p.m. for having a dog running at large. This violation occurred in the 700 block of South Second Street.

At 10:14 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 500 block of South Ninth Street resulting in the arrest of Thomas J. O’Neal, Jr., 25, of Oregon, for disorderly conduct. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 12 At 4:40 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of South Second and Washington Streets involving a 2005 Toyota driven

by Michael D. Ramsey, 27, of Oregon, and a 2008 Ford driven by Kantime Kolani, 49, of Moline. Ramsey was issued citation for failure to yield turning left and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Oregon officers responded to a possession of tobacco complaint at the Oregon High School. At 5:30 p.m., during a follow-up to the above call, police took one 17-year-old male juvenile of Oregon into limited custody for the offense of violating Section 6-85. Tobacco/(e) cigarette smoking by minor prohibited.

This violation occurred earlier in the day in the 200 block of South 10th Street. The juvenile was released into a parent’s custody with a referral to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

Sept. 13

Misty J. Berry, 38, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 7:18 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 400 block of South 10th Street.

Dylan A. Phelps, 21, of Byron, was issued civil citations at 8:55 p.m. for the offenses of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. These violations occurred in the 200 block of South Sixth Street.

Sept. 14 Skyler M. Kelley, 16, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 9:37 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

This violation occurred in the 100 block of North Fourth Street.

Sept. 15 At 1:55 a.m., Oregon Police arrested Andrew D. Stroud, 19, of Byron; Mitchell R. King, 19, of Byron; Autumn M. Hufford, 19, of Byron; and Madison E. Milburn, 19, of Oregon were arrested at 1:55 a.m. for the illegal consumption of

alcohol as minors.

They were transported to the Ogle County Jail from the 500 block of South Third Street.

Four verbal/written warnings were issued from Sept. 10-16.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Sept. 11 Jose Navarro, 38, of Leaf River was arrested on a warrant for driving while license suspended. Navarro posted the $15,000 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 28.

Ricky Barnett, 58, of Rockton, was arrested on a warrant for a petition to revoke. Barnett’s bond was set at $10,000 (10%) pending a court appearance.

Deputies investigated a report of a violation of bond conditions at 111 Main St Leaf River. As a result of that investigation, Tobias Whetsel, 37, of Leaf River, was taken into custody for a violation of an order or protection. Tobias was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held pending a court appearance.

Sept. 12 Daniel Wallgren, 37, of Oregon, was arrested at 6:55 a.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 2000 block of West Lights-

ville Road. Wallgren was additionally issued a citation for operating an uninsured vehicle.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

David W. Richards, 27, of Sterling, was arrested at 7:48 p.m. for possession of a controlled substance (x2), possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of drug equipment and driving while license suspended following a traffic stop at Illinois 72 and Mill Road for a traffic violation.

Richards was also given civil citations for unlawful possession of cannabis, less than 10 grams, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A front seat passenger, Kasey Orr, 38, of Sterling, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug equipment. Both subjects were transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Sept. 13 Darrick D. Dickinson, 44, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for domestic battery.

Dickinson posted the $3,000 (10%) bond and was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 14.

Sept. 16 Zaipa Mtema, 20, of Rockford, was stopped at 7:27 p.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. Upon further investigation it was learned Mtema did not have a valid driver’s license.

Mtema was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was remained in lieu of bond. Mtema was also cited for disobeying a traffic control device.

Sept. 17 At about 12:18 hours a.m., deputies conducted a welfare check on an individual at 156 Dayflower Circle in Davis Junction. As a result of the investigation, Jeremey R. Phillips, 28, of Davis Junction, was arrested for disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held pending an appearance before a judge. He was also issued civil citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kenneth L. Holt, 54, of Decatur, Georgia, was arrested at 11:25 a.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 8000 block of North

Illinois 251. Holt was issued an I bond and released at the scene.

Lavern A. Dearborn, 55, of Sterling, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Dearborn’s full cash bond was set at $3,088 pending a court appearance.

Richard Huereca, 45, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Huereca was issued a recognizance bond and released.

Huereca is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 24.

Melvin A. Jefferson, 28, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Jefferson posted $50 of the $602 full cash bond and was released. Jefferson is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 29.

Sept. 18 Arthur T. Carter, 47, of Rock Falls, was arrested at 2:28 a.m. for not having a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop in the 5000 block of North Illinois 2 for an equipment violation. Carter was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Marcia Lynn Mays, 48, of Normal, died at 11:32 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018 at OSF Health Care St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

Marcia was born on April 25, 1970 in Oregon, the daughter of Donald and Carol Grindley Dales.

She married Jeffrey B. Mays on July 24, 1993 in Bloomington, and he survives.

Also surviving are her daughters, Emily Mays and Allison Mays, both at home; and her in-laws.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

In Jeff’s words, “Marcia is truly the embodiment of humility. She never wanted attention from anyone. She just wanted the best for everyone else. She opened our home to anyone who would come.”

Friends remarked that it was clear that her love for Jeff, Emily and Ali had no bounds.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1926 in Forreston, the daughter of Jacob and Wilhelmina (Harrenstein) Ludwig.

She married Dale Russman on May 10, 1969.

ROBERT D. ELLIOTT Robert D. Elliott, 85, of Oregon, died on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Bob was born on May 29, 1933 in Oregon, the son of Edward and Hazel (Harnish) Elliott.

She was truly such a passionate person about each and every student and co-worker.

Marcia was married 25 years to Jeff and anyone who observed them knew they were each other’s person. They left such a legacy of love.

They embodied what it looks like to love in sickness and in health. All who observed their marriage were inspired on how to live a full life in the face of incredibly difficult circumstances.

The girls were the light of her life.

She did anything she could to help them grow into healthy, happy, compassionate women of faith, and she surely

accomplished that.

Even in the midst of all her health concerns she helped the girls not miss out on anything in life.

The girls have made many wonderful memories of Disney World, St. Louis, and Chicago as a family as well as simple memories of baking with mom or going to the splash pad.

She will be missed.

A Celebration of Life memorial service was held on Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Normal.

Arrangements were completed by Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington.

Marcia and family had the most beautiful experience at Inheritance of Hope which helps families who are facing the loss of a parent.

In lieu of flowers, the family would love for any memorials to be made to Inheritance of Hope so they can gift other families with the same experience.

sister, Vera Johnson, of Forreston; two nephews, Alan (Judi) Ranz, of Forreston, and Galen Russel, of Forreston; and many step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son in infancy, Lyle E. Bennett; stepson, Brian Russman; step-daughter, Wanda Bramer; two brothers, Alvin Ludwig and Marvin Ludwig; and sister,

Velma Scheaffer.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 19 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Forreston with Rev. Lyle Zumdahl officiating.

Burial was at White Oak Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her name.

Bob is survived by his wife, Doris Elliott, of Oregon; daughter, Brenda (George) Noble, of Oregon; six grandchildren, Libby, Whitney, Eli, Alyssa, Josh, and Zach; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Phyllis Shugars, of Las Vegas,

Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jody Elliott; four brothers; and three sisters.

She worked at Morton High School for 25 plus years as a special education teacher.
