Farm Stroll offered a look at six area farms Perfect fall weather brings out a crowd

“Love them,” she said as she filled her mouth with the small dark purple berries straight from the bush at BerryView Orchard, northwest of Mt. Morris, one of seven stops Sunday on the Ogle County Farm Stroll.

Her mother Lynne Kalnins laughed.

“At first she thought they were too tart,” she said.

“I like them now,” replied Abigail, grabbing another handful.

Her 2-year-old brother Jonas held out a chubby purple-stained hand.

“Jonas likes to smash them as you can see by his hands,” said Kalnins with a grin.

She and her husband Matt and another daughter Caroline, 3, were taking in the Farm Stroll and all it had to offer.

“We’re just out enjoying the day,” she said.

The berries, also known as black chokeberry, ripen around Labor Day and were at their peak for steady stream of visitors who turned out to learn more about local agriculture and enjoy perfect fall weather.

Jeff and Julie Warren, owners of BerryView, have been raising aronia berries since 2010 and now have 1,600 bushes in production.

The berries are juicy with an astringent flavor and can be eaten fresh, on salads, blended into smoothies, or mixed with other fruits in jellies, baked goods, yogurt, sorbet, or juice blends.

The Warrens also raise apple trees in their u-pick orchard, and visitors were buying bags of crisp Cortland apples before they continued on the Farm Stroll.

Jeff said they planted 600 new trees in 2017 and another 50 this year, and as soon as they mature will offer golden delicious, gala, honey crisp, and jonagold apples.

Along with the bright red Cortlands, visitors could buy rhubarb-aronia and cherry-aronia jelly and aronia-apple crisp to take home or pick up a pumpkin or two grown by Warren’s nineyear-old grandson Henry.

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Illinois State Police Crime Scene investigators and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office are assisting the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department with the investigation into the death of a Polo man who was found dead in his home after a fire late Saturday night.

Sheriff Brian VanVickle did not call the death of Keith Fredricks, 81, suspicious Monday afternoon but said further investigation is warranted since the cause of the fire could not be “readily determined.”

Polo Police Chief Kurt Cavanaugh requested the assistance of the sheriff’s department.

Cavanaugh said neighbors called the Polo Fire Department around 11:45 p.m. Saturday after observing the fire which started in an attached garage at Fredricks’ home at 502 W. Buffalo St.

Elderly Polo man found dead after house fire Firefighters found Fredricks, who lived by himself, dead inside the house.

An autopsy was performed on Monday, but Coroner Lou Finch said the cause of death was not yet available, pending test results.

Fire Chief Tony Karrow said the garage was “fully involved with fire” when firefighters arrived and significant smoke was inside the house.

The fire was out in about 10 minutes, he said, but the house sustained smoke, water, and heat damage.

Fredricks’ car, which was parked in the driveway, was also damaged by the flames and heat.

The siding on the next door neighbor’s was severely damaged as well.

The Mt. Morris, Oregon, Forreston, Milledgeville, Lanark, Dixon Rural, and Dixon City Fire Departments, and Advance Ambulance assisted at the scene.

IN BRIEF Rock River Sweep rescheduled The 2018 Oregon Rock River Sweep has been rescheduled for Saturday, Sept.

29 from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Check in will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Kiwanis Park, behind Conover Square, at the intersection of North Second Street and Franklin Street.

Volunteers are needed on foot or in boats to clean up a nine mile section of the Rock River, from north of the boat landing on Ill. 2 to the Castle Rock State Park boat landing, for this annual effort to protect and preserve this beautiful local resource.

Originally the event was set for Sept.

8, but flooding made that impossible.

Oregon Together granted tax-exempt status The executive board of Oregon Together recently announced that the non-profit has been granted tax-exempt status.

Being designated 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service will allow Oregon Together to receive tax deductible bequests, gifts, and donations and will enable the organization to continue work on special projects and events in the community.

People can make tax-deductible donations to the general organization or they can designate specific areas for their support.

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The Oregon City Council reversed a 25-year-old ordinance Tuesday, waiving a $15,000 fee for a county property owner to hook up to city water and sewer mains.

The council took action that approved a request from William and Nancy Messenger to waive or reduce the fee on property they are flipping at 794 N. Ill. 2, just outside the city limits.

Commissioner Jim Barnes made a motion to deny the Messenger’s request based on an ordinance passed in 1993 while he was the city’s mayor.

Barnes said the ordinance requires a fee of up to $15,000 if the owners of that property hook up to city mains because of a dispute between the city and former property owner Jerry Moats.

He said Moats refused to give the city an easement across his property to run a water main to the Fairgrounds Subdivision, forcing the city to spend $15,000 to reroute the main.

The Messengers bought the property from Moats last November.

Deb Maas, attorney for the Messengers, said her clients were unaware of the ordinance because a title search failed to discover it.

She said city clerk Charlene Ruthe only recently found the provision in the code, after the Messengers made their request to hook up to city services.

Maas said the Messengers plan to request annexation into the city, but only if the fee can be waived or reduced.

“From their perspective, the ordinance is punitive for something they had no part in,” Maas said.

Nancy Messenger said the property already has a well and installing a septic field is estimated at $8,500.

Barnes said the title search company is to blame for not discovering the ordinance.

Maas said the Messengers do not want to get involved in litigation.

Commissioner Terry Schuster said that while Moats was “totally within his rights” to refuse the easement, the Messengers should not have to pay for his decision.

He also said the city would gain from annexing the property through additional sewer and water fees and real estate tax revenue.

Mayor Ken Williams said that as a result of the vote, the Messengers will be required to pay only the standard hook-ups fees of $1,500 each for sewer and water, plus other costs, once the property is annexed into the city.

More than 150 bicyclists traveled 30 or 50 miles of gravel roads, in the dark of night, through a pouring storm Sept. 2, and then celebrated the unforgettable experience.

They were part of a large cycling sub-culture who loves the challenge of riding gravel roads.

Ogle County has some of the best gravel roads with hills and scenery in Illinois.

It lies close to large metropolitan centers which have no gravel roads, hills, or scenery. Welcome to Ogle County.

This was the second annual Dust at Dusk event organized collaboratively by White Pelican Inc. in Oregon and Stu Garwick, owner of Freeport Cyclery.

This year’s event even attracted Kae Takeshita, of Chicago, one of the top gravel road racing cyclists in the U.S. Scores of riders then stayed to enjoy an after party at Franklin Street Pub. Many participants stayed the night in area campgrounds, hotels, and in community homes which

offered sleeping space.

A lot of energy was evident at the registration table in the Conover parking lot as equipment was unloaded and checked.

Riders gathered in groups to share stories and make new friendships.

Local cyclists Dan Libman, Dom Cozzi, and Scott Stephens worked hard to make everyone feel welcome.

Maps of the 30- and 50-mile routes on roads as far as Polo were handed out.

By the 6 p.m. start time the

weather was ominous, with thunder in the north and dark clouds to the west.

Riders on the longer route were engulfed in the storm at the halfway point around 8 p.m.

One rider recalled riding downhill on a gravel road at 25 miles per hour with thunder, wind, and rain lashing at him. He said it was like bicycling down a rushing brown river. His comment afterward was, “I can’t wait to return next year.”

They are a tough breed.

By 11 p.m., stories of adventures

flowed freely over pizza and beer as the last riders made it back to town. All agreed it was a great success.

“The ride is a great way to spend night before Labor Day, with the day afterward for recovery,” Cozzi said.

Next year’s ride is again planned for Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

Two additional cycling events are coming to Oregon in the near future.

Ogle County’s largest organized ride, TOSOC (Tour of Scenic Ogle County) will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22.

More than 400 riders are expected for this third annual Village of Progress fundraiser ride of 10, 32, or 62 miles.

The next cycling event is Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center’s “Pedal for a Purpose” round trip ride to Byron at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29.

This is a relatively flat 22-mile ride along the Rock River National Water Trail and returning by the Byron Nuclear Plant.

Margaret Fuller Festival was held in 1993 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is the second in a series of articles about Margaret Fuller, who visited Oregon in 1843.

BY OTTO DICK The second Margaret Fuller Festival was held July 2, 3 and 4, 1993 in Oregon.

It marked the 150th anniversary of Margaret Fuller’s weeklong visit to Oregon.

Many people were involved in the planning and execution of the activities of this event.

Besides volunteers from Oregon there were people from Iowa, New York, Minneapolis, and Wisconsin.

Volunteers in Illinois came from Dixon, Brookfield, Mt. Morris, DeKalb, Elmhurst, Rochelle, Pecatonica, Bloomington, and Forreston.

Many events were scheduled for all ages including several for children.

Eve n t s f o r c h i l d re n we re face-painting, clown face creating, storytelling, dancing, fabric art, fan art, balloon art, bubble mania, sailboat making, and making banners and wind socks.

Steve Rypkema demonstrated how to create puppets, make gruesome masks, bird feeders, and junk sculptures all from recycled materials.

The schedule of events included guided canoe rides, coffee house and bookstore tours, and interpretation of the Lorado Taft Eagle’s Nest Art Collection, Reader’s Theatre with Lucy Miele, Dr. John Prehn , Dr. Jeffrey Steele, Constance Fuller Theinen, and area local writers.

Other events were Rose of the Rock Riverboat rides, the Lytle art collection, an early look at Oregon, a dramatic presentation entitled “Men, Women, and Margaret Fuller,” picnics, music, and other activities at Oregon Park East and the rededication of Ganymede Spring and an re-enactment of Lorado Taft’s Eagle’s Nest Art Colony near the Black Hawk Statue.

Earleen Hinton’s article in the 1993 Oregon Republican Reporter newspaper (serving the Oregon area since 1851) reported John Prehn, Jeffrey Steele and Constance Fuller Threinen discussed Marga-

ret Fuller and her works during a forum at the Oregon Coliseum.

Prehn was a sociologist who suggested Oregon recognize the 150th anniversary of Fuller’s visit.

Steele, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, had studied Fuller extensively.

Therinen was a descendant of Fuller.

Earleen also wrote, “Actress and author Laurie James brought Fuller to life in a dramatization at the Oregon Coliseum, Dressed in 19th century garb, James presented the one-woman drama that chronicled Fuller’s short life. James said ‘I have given advice 200 times. I have taken it once,’ as she portrayed the outspoken Fuller.”

Lucy Miele, actress, motivational speaker, humorist, and author presented “With Love” on Saturday, July 3 at the Coliseum.

“With Love” was a pithy, sprightly view of love, love of woman for man, for food, for friends, and even for snakes of the two-legged variety.

Miele was in demand as a speaker throughout the country for corporations and organizations.

4-H Foundation Honors Volunteer Nancy Etnyre Award is given for exemplary service The Illinois 4-H Foundation annually recognizes 4-H volunteers for exemplary service to the Illinois 4-H program.

This year, 67 new members were inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame during a celebration Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.

This year celebrated the 14-year anniversary of the award, said Angie Barnard, Illinois 4-H Foundation executive director.

“These long-time volunteers fully embody what 4-H strives to instill in youth,” Barnard said. “They are caring, dedicated, generous leaders, and the Illinois 4-H Foundation is extremely proud to be able to provide this honor to each and every one of them to thank them for their service to this

4-H provided many opportunities and adventures during her teen years. At one time she worked at the Ogle County Extension Office as an Agriculture and 4-H and Youth Advisor.

Since then, she has stayed active as an Extension volunteer. She and two friends formed the Trailblazers 4-H Club in Oregon and led the group for 12 years. She also held positions on the Ogle County 4-H Foundation, Multi-County Advisory Council and State Advisory Council.

She is very deserving to be honored as this years 4-H Hall of Fame winner for Ogle County.

BINGO IN MT. MORRIS

If you love bingo and you’d like to help two local entities raise some cash then mark Sunday, Sept. 16 on your calendar.

The Autumn on Parade Committee and the Moose Family Center are teaming up for an afternoon of bingo at the Moose center in Mt. Morris. The event is open to the public.

The center’s bar and restaurant will open at noon with bingo following from 1-3 p.m.

Packets will be sold for $13 at the door for all 13 games. Players can also purchase extra cards for each The Moose Family Center in Mt. Morris and the Autumn on Parade festival are teaming game.

Four special games are also up for a Bingo Event on Sunday, Sept. 16. Here, Jim Primrose, a member of the Moose planned for a cost of $1 each.

Oregon fumbles seven times in loss

Jacob Shafer remained efficient throughout, completing 18 of his 25 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns, including a 7-yard touchdown to Brayden Forrest midway through the fourth quarter to help put a bow on the victory for the Dukes. Christiansen got loose for a 55-yard TD run a little

later, giving him 110 yards on the day, and that was all she wrote.

“When [Shafer] needed to, he played well tonight,” Smith said.

“We knew [Oregon] was going to put pressure on us, and he did well with the pressure.”

Forrest had six catches for 58 yards for Dixon.

Nolan Randick wasn’t supposed to start at middle linebacker this week, but thrust into a new role, the senior helped lead Dixon to perhaps its best defensive performance of the season in a 27-6 win over Oregon.

The Dukes limited the Hawks to just 115 yards of offense in the game. Randick set the tone with a strip-sack of Oregon quarterback Ryker Finch on the game’s third play; he recovered the fumble for good measure, setting up a 13-yard touchdown run by Tyler Christiansen to give Dixon a lead it would never relinquish.

“That’s how you know you have a healthy program. This young man has paid his dues,” Dixon coach Dave Smith said. “Tonight, he got his shot, and he did a great job. I thought he had a very, very solid game tonight.”

The game was much closer than the final score would indicate.

Dixon’s lead was just 14-6 with less than 6 minutes to go before the Dukes (2-1) finally put the game away with back-to-back scores. “[The final score] was 14-6,” Smith said. “I know it was 27-6, but it was 14-6. We knew Oregon was going to be tough. We knew they are coached tough. They are physical.”

After moving backward in the first quarter – “gaining” minus-12 yards in the frame – the Hawks bulldozed their way back into the game thanks to the bruising backfield combination of Dalton Hermes and Jake Mennen, with the latter plunging in from a yard out to pull Oregon within 14-6 midway through the second quarter.

Mennen, who rushed for 72 yards, was injured on the final play of the first half, and in his absence, the game turned into a defensive struggle for much of the second half.

Oregon did not help its cause by fumbling the ball seven times, including multiple botched pitches or exchanges in the backfield.

“Our kids played fast tonight,” Smith said. “They understand what coaches [Rich] Crabel, [Bruce] Luther, and [John] Heckert want. From the defensive line all the way to the defensive backs, they played well.”

Hawk cross country teams run at Peoria meet The Oregon High school cross country team traveled to Detweiller Park in Peoria for the First to the Finish Invitational on Sept. 8.

The Class A girls race had 425 runners from all across Illinois.

The Oregon girls team placed 26 out of 65 teams.

The Hawks were led by sophomore Leah Watters, who finished the 3-mile course in 84th place with a time of 21:03.

Not far behind was team member Cynthia Nyderek with a time of 21:32, placing 107th.

Also earning team points were: Faith Marquardt, 174th – 22:48; Katelyn Byerley, 221th – 23:34, and Lydia Cermak 256th – 24:12.

Also running well for the Hawks were Brianna DeHaan – 24:17; McKenna Tremble – 25:38; Lorena Nava-Moyotl – 26:50; Ryanne DeHaan – 29:21; Lauren Montavan – 29:40; Adriana Ogarrio – 30:55; and Ashley McCormick – 36:00.

The Class A boys race had 592 competitors in the field.

The Sterling and Newman boys cross country teams tied for top honors at the Oregon 7-Person Invitational on Sept. 5 at Oregon Park West.

Each squad amassed 13 points, four fewer than the Illinois Math & Science Academy. Rounding out the field were Rockridge (34), Rochelle (36) and Genoa-Kingston (38).

Michael Bower led Oregon runners with a 25th place finish in 21:24 followed by 26th Conner Harshman, 21:42; 40th Issac Brooks, 23:58; 46th Brandon Hyde-Jones, 28:32; and 47th Charles Gatz, 28:39.

On the girls side, Sterling won with 11 points and was followed by IMSA (22), Oregon (23), Rochelle (24) and Rockridge (43).

HAWK SOCCER The Hawks soccer team beat South Beloit 11-2 on Sept. 8 in a morning game at Oregon Park West.

Top performers for Oregon were Josh Sitze with 4 goals and 2 assists; Jonny Acosta 3 goals 2 assists; Joey Gelander 1 goal 3 assists; Liam Dickson-Harriett 2 goals; Eli Rufer 1 goal; and Ryan Lazansky 1 assist.

Sept. 4 After 40 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Dukes broke through in the second half, notching four goals in 5 minutes in a 5-1 win over Oregon.

Tied 1-1 with nearly an hour of the game gone, Dixon’s Noah Grot put the Dukes ahead with a penalty kick. Boston Glessner added another goal moments later, then Adrian Rodriguez made it 4-1 in the 64th minute, and Kade Fulton tacked on the final goal in the 65th.

Moments after the Dukes broke through, the Hawks scored an equalizer. Josh Sitze had his shot stopped by Dixon goalkeeper Ryan Pitzer, but Brigham Finch was there to tap in the rebound in the 46th minute.

Oregon even had chances to take the lead. Jonathan Acosta sailed a shot over the crossbar in the 48th minute. In the 55th minute, Pitzer had to leap to push a shot from Sitze off the crossbar, then leapt on the ball before Jayden Davis could get a good look at tapping in the rebound.

But the goals started to come for Dixon, and the Hawks could not recover.

COMMENTARY Andy Colbert the luxury of Hunter Rogers as a fill-in quarterback.

Rogers looked like a pro back there, directing the show for injured Bailey Cullor. A smart, athletic kid like him can do that.

With the way the conference is shaking out, Forreston’s game with EPC looks like the last heavy lifting of the regular season.

If Forreston runs the ball like they did against Dakota, EPC (3-0) will have a hard time stopping the Cardinals.

How about Milledgeville putting the hammer down on perennial Upstate power Stockton? The senior-laden Missiles are loaded on defense and well on their way to an unbeaten regular season.

The wild card in the Upstate is Freeport Aquin. An interesting test for them is this week at Polo, in a match up of teams with talent but small rosters.

Coming in to the 2018, the Metro East Lutheran football team from

Edwardsville has seen hard times.

The Knights were out-scored 27312 in their first six games of 2017, on the way to a 1-8 record, with the only win coming by forfeit over Crossroads Academy of Big Rock, a program for home-schooled kids that dropped football last year.

Metro East hasn’t resorted to shutting down its program, but with a 6-75 record from 2009-17, the school may have considered it.

Disappointment at NIU

Off-Field Problems Hard to believe, but this year has been even worse with off-the-field problems.

As one of only eight independents in Illinois, Metro East, located in the far southwest part of the state, has a huge challenge finding games.

In the first week, they were forced to travel 600 miles round trip to Chicago.

In itself, that was bad enough.

Then, after completing pregame warmups against Hansberry Prep Academy, gunfire rang out on a nearby street. Fearing for both teams’ safety, the game was canceled.

Last year, Metro East made a 500mile round trip to get pounded by Polo. At least the Marcos were the

ompared to the first half against DuPec in week one, it looked like a different Forreston football team against Dakota.

The Cardinal offensive machine was relentless in picking up 26 first downs and literally driving the ball down Dakota’s throat.

I hadn’t seen Forreston play since that first half and either: a.) they’re substantially improved, b.) that first game was an adjustment period, c.) DuPec was better than expected and Dakota overrated, or d.) all of the above.

Linemen don’t make the headlines much, but what a performance by guard Derek DeVries and tackle Mitchell Heinz in blowing the Dakota defenders off the ball.

Add in Garett Badertscher leading second man through and that is as good of a blocking threesome you’ll see in 1A. Not only are those guys physical, but they are agile and fast. It was enjoyable watching play-after-play go over that side and also see the running backs hit the holes hard and lay some licks on would-be tacklers.

JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL The seventh grade David L. Rahn Eagles were in action last week when they traveled to Dixon and Byron and hosted Ashton-Franklin Center.

On Aug. 28, the Eagles were guest of Dixon Reagan for two matches.

In the first game of match one, DLR’s serving prevented the hosts from returning the ball. The Eagles were victorious, 25-10, thanks to seven serving points from Alexis Ebert and five points each from Riley Robertson and Kenna Wubbena.

Game two was more of the same as the Eagles easily won, 25-11. Wubbena led DLR with six straight service points.

The Eagles swept the match when they took game three, 15-8. In the afternoon’s second match, DLR started game one slowly.

Struggling with their serve reception, the Eagles fell to Dixon, 8-25. The Eagles came alive in the second game to make a run at it.

They fell short, 18-25.

The final game of the match was the closest one. The Eagles hung in there with four straight service points from Sarah Stevens, but lost a heartbreaker, 14-16.

Two nights later, the Eagles traveled to Byron to open the 2018 Route 72 conference for two matches. In game one of the first match, Byron’s first server reeled off nine

straight points before DLR decided to play.

They fought back to tie the score at eleven. It was a battle to the end before the Eagles defeated the Tigers, 21-25. Ebert had seven service points to lead DLR and Robertson had five.

In game two, the Eagles took control early, in part due to Robertson’s twelve points. The visitors won, 25-18. The Eagles swept the Tigers by winning 16-14 in the final game.

Robertson and Ebert combined for eight Eagle points. In the second match, the Eagles played one of their best games to date, winning 25-21.

The Eagles were shaky in game two, losing 25-12. DLR fought hard in game two but Byron’s serving was strong. They lost another close one, 22-25.

A week later, the Eagles hosted A-FC for their second conference match of the season. DLR stunned the Raiders in game one, 25-11, with eight service points from Gracen Pitts.

It was more of the same in game two as the Eagles looked sharp in their 25-10 win.

Pitts again led DLR with six service points.

In the final game of the match, A-FC’s serving improved. Their first player served up 12 points in the 7-25 loss.

Pam Karlson will speak on Birds in the Garden: Tips for Creating and Enjoying a Bird Oasis at the Wild Ones meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at Rock Valley College in the Physical Education Center PEC0110 (lower level), 3301 N. Mulford Rd., Rockford.

Karlson has documented more than 110 bird species in her Chicago garden which were attracted by the wildlife habitat she has created.

She will discuss landscape enhancements to attract resident and migratory birds to urban and suburban gardens.

An enthusiastic photographer, her photo-rich presentation covers the diversity of bird species found in the Chicago area, as well as their migration habitats, diet, nesting, and supplemental water and feeding needs.

She will also explore habitat needs of pollinators, the role of citizen science and planting suggestions for birds, with an emphasis on natives.

Karlson is a career artist, gardener, and birder, and has been rescuing migratory birds for 14 years as a wildlife rehabilitation volunteer. She co-owns Waxwing Studio, Inc. with her artist husband Mike Edsey, specializing in illustra-

Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Sept. 4 At 8:15 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 100 block of North Second Street involving a 2010 Ford driven by Dawn C. Jones, 52, of Dixon, and a 2018 IC School Bus driven by Susan L. Coine, 57, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

Mark Much, 29, of Milledgeville, was arrested at 10:47 a.m., for aggravated fleeing to elude, obstructing justice, possession of cannabis 100-500 grams, reckless driving, and speeding 40 mph over the limit. These charges are a result of an incident that occurred the evening of Aug. 13 at approximately 7:46 p.m., followed by a thorough investigation, and resulting in the above arrest.

Savanah P. Leschner, 22, of Pecatonica, was issued a citation at 10 p.m. for driving while license suspended. This violation occurred in the 500 block of North Fourth Street.

Sept. 8 At 12:30 p.m., police investigated a car vs deer traffic crash in the 1300 block of West Washington Street involving a 2005 Saturn driven by Hannah L. Krahn, 19, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

Sept. 6 Xoe L. Blake, 16, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 11:55 p.m. for failure to signal. This violation occurred in the 100 block of South Seventh Street.

Sept. 7 Richard D. Davis, 45, of Oregon, was arrested at 4:17 a.m. for driving while license revoked and possession of a controlled substance.

Davis was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 100 block of South Third Street.

One parking ticket and two verbal/written warnings were issued Sept. 3-9.

At 10:50 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 100 block of North Seventh Street, resulting in the arrest of Nicholas C. Davis, 34, of Rochelle, for disorderly conduct. Davis was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 11:07 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 300 block of Franklin Street, resulting in the arrest of Brian L. Boyland, 39, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Boyland was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Illinois State Police Troopers issued 501 citations, 668 written warnings, and made 36 criminal arrests during the month of August.

Speeding accounted for 281 citations, 41 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 21 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 10 traffic crashes, assisted 79 motorists, and conducted 127 commercial vehicle inspections, 13 of which were placed outof-service for safety reasons.

Four arrests were made for driving while under the influence. District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, had 1 traffic crash fatality in August.

Other recent activities in District 1 were: Sept. 1 Joseph R. Braden, 44, of Rochelle, was stopped for improper lane usage at 1:45 a.m. on Cleveland Avenue at Gary Street in Rochelle and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, failure to wear a seat belt, failure to notify the Secretary of State of an address change, and failure to carry a driver’s license on his person.

Braden was also wanted on an Ogle County warrant for failure to appear for leaving the scene of a property damage crash.

Braden was released on an I-bond for the DUI and transported to the Ogle County Jail for the warrant.

Edward Glavin, 52, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol while deputies were investigating a suspicious vehicle in the Rolling Green trailer park.

Sept. 7 Melissa Encinas, no age or address given was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol at 12:11 a.m. when deputies conducted a traffic stop on I39 at mile marker 99 for a violation of the Scott’s law.

Encinas also received citations for improper lane usage and Scott’s law.

She was jailed in lieu of bond. Deputies were assisted by AC Towing.

John H. Cooper, 42, of Clinton, Iowa, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

He posted the $384 full cash bond and was released with no further court date needed.

Sandra J. Garcia, 24, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while license suspended with a $3,000 (10 percent) bond.

Garcia was released on a recognizance bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 10.

Kenneth E. Meier, 63, of Belvidere, was arrested for driving while license suspended at 4:18 p.m. after deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 2000 block

of North River Road Sept. 9 Tobias Whetsel, 37, of Leaf River, was arrested for domestic battery at approximately 12:40 a.m. after deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at 111 Main St., Apt. 1 in Leaf River for a domestic disturbance.

Sept. 10 Gibran Zepeda, 25, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Sept. 11 The Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputies, Oregon Fire Department, and the Oregon Ambulance were dispatched at 4:46 a.m. to a one-vehicle accident with injuries and entrapment in the 1700 block South Daysville Road.

After an investigation, it was determined that a blue 2001 Pontiac Aztec driven by Gregory L. Crisp, 50, of Nachusa, was southbound on Daysville Road when it crossed over into the eastside ditch.

The vehicle traveled the ditch for approximately 100 yards before striking a guard rail and rolling over onto its roof.

Crisp was extricated from the vehicle by the Oregon Fire Department and transported to Mercyhealth Hospital in Rockford by the Oregon Ambulance with minor injuries.

He was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, no insurance, and was given an I-bond for driving while license revoked. He will appear in court at a later date.

Sept. 6 Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at 164 Dayflower Circle in Davis Junction.

After an investigation, deputies arrested Joshua Fabish, 36, for domestic battery. He was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

Jeralyn J. Allen, no age given, of Sterling, was arrested for failure to appear.

She was jailed in lieu of $592 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Sept.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop at approximately 8:38 a.m. in the 4000 block of South Ill. 26. After further investigation, the driver of the vehicle, Jeffrey McCurdy, 46, of Freeport, was arrested for driving while license suspended.

A passenger in the vehicle, James Wetzell, 44, of Freeport, was placed under arrest for possession of a controlled substance, obstructing identification, possession of drug paraphernalia, and on an outstanding Ogle County warrant.

Both McCurdy and Wetzell were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.

Glavin was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

Jennifer Lenderman, 30, of Loves Park, for was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for battery. She was jailed in lieu of $3,000 (10 percent) bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 7.

OBITUARIES CLARE E. BRADFORD Clare Eugene Bradford, “Mr. B”, 67, of Byron, died on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at Swedish American Hospital, Rockford.

He was born on Sept. 9, 1950 in Oregon, the son of Clare LaVerne and Mildred J. (Gaede) Bradford.

He graduated from Oregon High School in 1968.

He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Wisconsin, Platteville.

He then received his master’s degree from National Louis University.

He married Rita Forrester on Jan. 26, 1973 at the United Methodist Church in Oregon.

Mr. B taught in the Byron School System for 32 years retiring in 2006. He was a former Byron Middle School wrestling coach.

His family was his main focus, never missing a family event especially if it involved his granddaughter Caroline whom he loved immensely.

He was an avid woodworker and an all around handyman.

He loved to travel, go to movies, and go for walks in the woods with his wife Rita, of 45 years.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; son and daughter-in-law, Justin (Katie Bou-

Anna E. (Zumdahl) Brechters, 89, formerly of Mt. Morris, died on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018, at Huntington Place in Janesville, Wisconsin.

Anna was born on Feb. 2, 1929, the daughter of William and Marion (Miller) Zumdahl.

She lived most of her life in Mt. Morris until moving to Janesville.

Anna graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1947.

She married Earl Miller. She later married Henry Brechters Nov. 4, 1978, who preceded her in death in 2015.

Anna worked at Kable Printing, Mt. Morris Bank, and Kable News until her retirement in 1992.

She was a member of the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren.

Anna enjoyed cooking, playing cards, shopping, and spending time with her family.

Anna is survived by her daughter, Linda (Wendell) Boyer, of Janesville; two grandchildren, Jhesi (Josh) Brand, of Madison, Tennessee, and Bryan Boyer (Brittany Prosser), of Verona, Wisconsin; two great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Lila (Dick) Grap; three step-grand-

children, Rhonda (Pat) Marshall, Lisa (Steve) Pierce, and Melinda (John) Conforti; and several step-great-grandchildren.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; four sisters, Bernice, Hazel, Wilma, and Florence; and her brother, George.

Funeral services were held on Sept.

11 at the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren with Rev. Rodney Caldwell officiating.

Burial was at Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be donated to the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation and Agrace Hospice.

LOIS I. CHRISTIANS Lois I. Christians, 89, Mt. Morris, died on Friday, Sept. 7, 2018 at Oregon Living & Rehabilitation Center, Oregon.

Lois was born on Nov. 5, 1928 in Fair Haven, the daughter of Glen and Helen (Isenhart) Wolfley. She married Leslie Christians on April 30, 1949 in Chadwick. Leslie passed away on March 29, 2007.

Lois loved camping with family, family gatherings, singing all kinds of music. She put everyone before herself.

She attended the Mt. Morris Evangelical Free Church.

Lois is survived by her children, Lonnie (Cindy) Christians, Fox Lake, and Linda (Rod) Peterson, Mt. Morris; four grandchildren, Tim Christians, Schaumburg, Stephen (Kathleen) Christians, Chicago, Lucas Peterson, Leaf River, and Megan (Jeff) Leo, Schaumburg; one great-grandchildren, Chase; a brother, Merle Wolfley, Sterling; a sister, Velma (Al) Randall, Rock Falls.

Lois was preceded in death by her

parents; husband, Leslie; granddaughter, Karshan; and two brothers, Clyde and LaVerne.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Finch Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris, with Pastor Christopher Ausler officiating. Burial was at Chapel Hill Memorial Park, Dixon.

Erik L. Reed, 58, lifelong Oregon resident, died suddenly on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 at CGH Medical Center, Sterling.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1959 in Dixon, the son of Edna Reed.

Erik was a 1978 graduate of Oregon High School and a lifelong auto mechanic.

He also worked with the Oregon Ambulance, Oregon Fire Department, Oregon Police Department, and Ogle County Sheriff’s Department.

Erik enjoyed cars, motorcycles, fishing, boating, and trap shooting.

He is survived by his fiance, Janelle Miller, of Oregon; son, Paul “P.J.” (Kelly) Gabucci, of Mt. Morris; grandchildren, Gregory and Gabrielle; and nephews, Chase Reed and Brandon Reed.

Susan K. Patterson, 75, of Polo, died on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018 at KSB hospital in Dixon, after a brief illness.

She was born on April 11, 1943 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Ray E. and Geraldine “Gerry” (Madsen) Nelson.

Sue graduated in 1961 from Price Lab School in Cedar Falls and had a variety of jobs including insurance sales for Mutual of Omaha Insurance, advertising sales for Sauk Valley Newspapers and the Freeport Journal Standard, and her own painting business, Brush Inc. Sue was also a devoted mother and an accomplished homemaker, seamstress, cook, baker, and gardener.

She loved strong coffee and rooting for the Chicago Cubs.

Before her stroke 12 years ago, Sue was an active member of the Polo Church of the Brethren.

Sue had put her faith and trust in Jesus Christ, and therefore is enjoying Heaven with no walker or wheelchair, worshiping her Savior.

Sue is survived by her children from her marriage to Jerry Patterson, Kelly (Brian) Duncan, of Polo, Jack (Crystal) Patterson, of Bloomington, Adam (Winona) Patterson, of Aurora, and Amy (Jason) Mallory, of Largo, Florida; grandchildren, Levi (Lydia) Duncan, Sarah (Carl) Sundquist, Emma (Danny) Campton, Molly Duncan, Kate (Klaus) Kulicke, Hannah (fiancé Josh Millmore) Patterson, Sam Patterson, Megan Patterson, and Alexander Patterson; great-grand-

Karen E. Rosenbalm, 64, a 20-year resident of Oregon, died peacefully in her home on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on April 1, 1954 in Chicago, the daughter of Norris and Ada (Duck) Davis.

She married Daniel Rosenbalm on Oct. 12, 1990 in Sycamore.

Karen enjoyed and spent many days driving around “junking” with Dan. She loved time with her grandchildren, flowers, gardening, humming birds, and cooking and baking.

She is survived by her husband, Dan Rosenbalm, of Oregon; daughter, Wendy (Rob) Smice, of Oregon; step-daughters, Brenda Rosenbalm, of Forreston, and Janie Ervin, of Herrin; step-sons, Danny Rosenbalm and Brian Rosenbalm, both of Oregon; and grandchildren, Stephanie Wheeler, Jessica Stone, Kelsey Smice, Angel-Lee Stone, Desiree Gilbert, Bristol Rosenbalm, Ethan Smice, Chayse Rosenbalm, and Emersyn Smice.
