Persistent storms bring a foot of rain No evacuations yet; just plenty of ponded water in Ogle County

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Round after round of heavy rain for the last week has put area rivers and streams out of their banks across Ogle County.

By Monday afternoon as much as a foot of rain had fallen over some of the area.

According to the National Weather Service, the Rock River at Byron hit flood stage of 13 feet early Tuesday morning, and, with more rain in the forecast, is expected to rise to 15 feet by the time the storms let up on Sunday.

Ogle County Chief Deputy Sheriff Danny White said that low-lying areas like Rock River Terrace and Irwin Acres south of Byron, Brooks Isle near Oregon, and the Murray Subdivision near Grand

Detour were filling with water, but so far no evacuation plan was in effect.

“I’m not sure about the evacuation level,” he said Tuesday afternoon. “I think people are trying to maintain what they have.”

A no wake order, which limits the speed of water craft to five miles per hour, went into effect Monday on the Rock River through the county.

Further upstream in Winnebago County and Rock County, Wisconsin, the no wake order was issued over the weekend.

The Rock River Sweep set for Sept. 8 was canceled because of the high water and predicted storms.

Heavy rain began moving through the county late Aug. 28 into Aug. 29.

The storms resumed with determination on Aug. 31 and continued through Monday afternoon.

Although heavy rain was the main factor in the storms, some strong winds also came with them, bringing down trees and tree limbs.

A tornado was sighted north of Adeline on Monday but no damage was reported.

Saturated ground created puddles and ponding nearly everywhere.

The group campground at White Pines State Park was temporarily closed Saturday night when the Pine and Spring Creeks flooded that portion of the park.

Campers could access the main campgrounds via the emergency entrance located west of the park’s main entrance on Pines Road.

The Leaf River came out of its banks late Saturday night, spilling water into nearby fields and basements.

Pond Road had the north side of the Village of Leaf River was underwater and closed to traffic by early Sunday morning.

Leaf River Maintenance Supervisor Cam McGill was running pumps round the clock at the village’s wastewater treatment plant and low-lying downtown to keep sewer mains from being overwhelmed.

After clearing off late Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, the NWS forecast called for more storms from Tuesday afternoon through Saturday night.

River cleanup event may be rescheduled Mother Nature has put the kibosh on the Rock River Sweep, at least for this month anyway.

The event, scheduled for Sept.

8, has been canceled due to recent heavy rains that have increased water levels in the Rock River.

“You may have noticed the river is now dangerously high following the week of heavy rains, and more rains coming this week,” Terry Schuster, Oregon Together and Rock River Sweep volunteer said in an email.

“There will be no Rock River Sweep this Saturday, Sept. 8. A decision will be made later this week whether to reschedule the Sweep on another date this fall...depending on how quickly river conditions recover. So

Oregon’s Rock River Sweep focuses on cleaning the banks of the Rock River from Mud Creek Road to Castle Rock State Park.

The Rock River Sweep is an effort by many groups up and down the Rock River, from Horicon, Wisconsin to where the Rock meets the Mississippi River.

It is sponsored by RockRiverSweep.org, a grass roots, non-forprofit organization dedicated to preserving the health and ecosystem of the Rock River and its tributaries.

Art in the Country show opens Saturday, Sept. 8 Meet the artists at Saturday’s opening night A new Encore!

Mt. Morris art show opens in the Old Sandstone gallery on Saturday, Sept.

8 from 5 to 8 p.m. with opening night activities including refreshments (cider and cider donut holes), opportunities to meet the artists for the “Art in the Country” new show, and gentle music.

This show continues the September tradition of displaying a variety of fine art in several media.

Many of the pieces are available for purchase, as well as additional prints supplied by the artists.

In addition to opening night, the gallery will also be open on Saturday afternoons for 2 to 4 p.m.

Also in September, several fiber art classes will be offered for those inspired by seeing the fiber art

during the Straw Sculpting Competition activities and Artful Threads art show in the gallery.

STEAM gets boost from Rahn Rebound funds

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) program at Oregon schools got a boost Aug. 20 from Rahn Rebound Scholarship funds.

The school board approved closing the scholarship account and turning over $43,000 in it to the Oregon Schools Foundation.

The committee managing the scholarship fund earmarked $17,000 to be used technology and software for STEAM at David L. Rahn Junior High in Mt. Morris.

The Rahn Rebound Scholarship came from the “Rebuild Rahn” fund that was made possible by donations from the community to help rebuild Rahn Elementary School in Mt. Morris after it was destroyed by a fire in February

of 2004.

After the school was not rebuilt, the Oregon School Board decided the fund would to be used for scholarships in the district.

David L. Rahn was a junior high science teacher and elementary principal in the Mt. Morris School District, which combined with Oregon in 1993.

Lora Stevens McKee, president of the Oregon Schools Foundation, said the scholarship funds are appreciated.

“The Oregon Schools Foundation’s mission is to assist in developing facilities, support educational functions and provide broader educational opportunities for District 220 and its students,” she said. “We could not be more excited to receive this gift and to continue growing our students into leaders.”

ENVIRONMENT Two recycling events coming The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department will hold two electronic recycling events this September at the County Annex Building, 909 Pines Rd., Oregon.

The first event is on Saturday, Sept.

15 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The second event is the regular monthly event on Friday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. These events are for Ogle County residents only.

Oregon Elementary School recently received a $7,500 grant from the Monsanto Fund, which provides funding for food, nutrition, education and community development worldwide.

Employees from Monsanto’s Ashton office nominated Oregon Elementary School to receive the grant.

The grant will be used to help the sixth-grade science program implement STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) classroom studies and create connections with career paths in agriculture, envi-

ronmental and energy studies.

Students will receive inquiry-based lessons, simulations and educational software that facilitate their study in environmental water analysis and waste management.

“The project’s goal is to have students investigate the impact of technology, engineering and energy advancements on the environment and farming to help them develop skills to become the next generation of STEAM learners and leaders in our community,” said sixth grade science teacher, Aaron Mendoza. “We hope the project will improve student achievement through real-world experiences by teaching students how math, science and engineering skills are used in the real world and in their futures.”

Learn to swim this fall The Oregon Park District is offering morning, afternoon, evening and even Saturday swimming classes that will start the week of Oct. 15.

The classes will meet once a week for 8 weeks. No swimming lessons will be held during Thanksgiving week (Nov. 19-24).

Registration deadline is Sept. 15.

Sign up today, late registration will not be taken.

Classes are taught by certified Starfish Swim Instructors. Level 1-6 are for ages 3 and up.

Starbabies is for ages 6 months to 3 years and a parent must get in the water with them.

Check out the park district’s Angelfish Program for swimmers with disabilities or special needs.

Private swim lessons are also available for 30 minutes of one-on one instruction.

The 49th annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive in Oregon and Mt. Morris will be held on Friday, Sept. 14 and Saturday, Sept. 15.

Last year $5,466 was raised by the members of Oregon Council 1092

Where is he on affordable college/ trade career training and student debt? What are his ideas for investing in badly needed infrastructure?

The citizens of the 16th Congressional District have a choice. It will require change to move forward as a nation.

Our change will be made by electing Sara Dady as our representative.

PUBLIC VOICE Democracy cannot function without respect Dear Editor, During John McCain’s campaign for President, a woman in the audience said she could not trust Obama because he was an Arab.

McCain responded, “No ma’am. No ma’am. He’s a decent, family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign is all about.”

In my opinion, that response was as great a gift to our country as McCain’s military service.

It’s a long way from calling his opponent “crooked” and leading the crowd in shouting “Jail him!”

Crude verbal attacks and name calling make both a family and a country dysfunctional.

Another McCain quote is particularly relevant, “Our shared values define us more than our differences.”

We have been told to distrust our government, the news, the intelligence agencies, our allies, immigrants, minorities, other religions, and the results of scientific research - to name a few.

Democracy cannot function without the ability to reach a workable compromise, and that can hardly be done without trust and respect for those whose views differ from ours.

Russians must be calling for another round of vodka, reveling in their success at dividing us, as if we needed any help.

Does Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger represent you?

What has our current Congressman done to represent the farmers, the retired workers, small business owners, union members and the many hard working people of the 16th Congressional District?

Adam Kinzinger voted for enormous permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, and very little temporary tax relief for the rest of us.

In 2017, Kinzinger voted for a GOP healthcare plan that would have kicked roughly 24 million people off their health insurance plans and eliminated coverage for pre-existing conditions.

A provision in the bill ensured Kinzinger would keep his healthcare plan as it exists under the Affordable Care Act, but repealed it for the rest of the country.

He also voted to eliminate the IPAB, an independent board that keeps Medicare costs below limits.

He claims to be the champion of Medicare access.

Margaret Fuller Island was dedicated in 1880 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The Sept. 23, 1880, Ogle County Reporter newspaper recorded the following.

“Friday was beautiful, a clear sky and balmy atmosphere tending to the enjoyment of the festivities set apart for the occasion.

“Margaret Fuller Island was as an emerald set upon the bosom of the placid Rock River. Eagle Nest never seemed more picturesque in her lofty eerie, and Ganymede Spring rippled as quietly from the rocky bosom of the bluff as though we were commemorating the humblest writer in the land—instead of America’s most gifted woman.”

The first Margaret Fuller Festival was held on Sept. 17, 1880, 30 years after her death and 37 years after her visit to this valley.

In 1880 there were some citizens around who might have been here when Margaret visited.

She would have been 70 years if she could have returned for the dedication.

More than 1,500 citizens gathered for the dedication of Margaret Fuller Island, Eagle’s Nest Bluff and Ganymede Spring.

Two Rock River steamboats the Rover and the Occidental helped transport people to the sites.

A barge was used to carry people to the island.

Picnics, reunions, a choir and the Rock River Cornet Band added to the celebration.

The keynote address was delivered by Col. G. F. Sheets, who wrote a poem for the occasion.

This poem with 35 lines describes the loss of her gifts to the world and grieving that her feet would never again bless the paths of the Rock River Valley.

His opening comments of his address were “Strangers, Friends, Fellow Citizens — in me has been assigned the pleasant duty of extending to you all a friendly greeting and a hearty welcome.

I welcome you to our city, to our homes, to this island, to these grand old hills, to this majestic river and to all the scenes and festivities of the hour. In behalf of the committee of invitation and arrangements, I extend to you thanks for your pres-

ence and the wish that it may be to you an occasion of unmingled happiness and joy.”

This first Margaret Fuller Festival was organized by the Margaret Fuller Association of Oregon to honor the woman who had put Oregon and the Rock River Valley into the annals of American literature.

The officers of this association were all men headed by their president George A. Mix. Jan Woodhouse wrote we may never know why this festival took place in 1880. Maybe it’s important that it did.

The Ganymede Spring, the Eagle’s Nest Bluff and Margaret Fuller Island are symbols of her visit and

are still with us today.

It is interesting that the first woman allowed to use the Harvard University Library was honored with a festival in Oregon just 14 years after the close of the Civil War. Next week will focus on the 1993 Margaret Fuller dedication ceremony.

Oregon Lions Club holds annual Draw Down The Oregon Lions Club held its annual Draw Down on Aug. 23 at the VFW in Oregon.

The large crowd enjoyed snacks and fellowship, and then tickets were drawn from the barrel of the 250 that were sold.

Cash prizes included 12 $50, two $100, one $200, and one Grand Prize of $1,000.

All tickets were then put back into the barrel and drawn again for the door prizes valued at $1,970 and

donated by local merchants.

“The Oregon Lions Draw Down Committee wants to thank all the generous Oregon merchants who donated those door prizes as well as the people who purchased the tickets,” said club member Jean Hoff. “This annual fundraiser helps us continue to provide financial support to those who are visually or hearing impaired and to the Lions International Organization whose philanthropic work reaches worldwide.”

Eagle’s Nest Art Group will host a gourd art workshop on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Conover Square from 9 a.m. to noon at the ENAG studio, on the second floor of the Conover Square Mall, 201 N. Third St., Oregon.

Former art teacher Carrie Lay will lead the workshop and guide participants throughout the process.

The cost of this workshop is $15, to be paid on the day of the workshop.

Participants do not need to be ENAG members.

Supplies are provided, including completely prepared and cleaned gourds and all the materials for creating a beautifully artistic three-dimensional art object.

A work space will be set up for each participant with a variety of supplies, such as paints, inks, stains, weaving materials, and beads.

Head into fall at First Friday show on Sept. 7 Mt. Morris Moose Family Center hosts local musicians With summer unofficially ending on Labor Day music fans can charge into fall with First Fridays’ music on Sept. 7.

Once again the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center will host the popular open stage music show.

Musicians will draw for time slots at 6:30 p.m., performances will begin

at 7 p.m., and continue until all musicians, even late arrivals, have had their turn on stage.

A jam session will follow until it is time for the traditional closing with “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

The musical styles vary widely including country, bluegrass, folk, blues, light rock, and eclectic blending of multiple genres.

The musicians will be supported by a professional sound system engineered by Kent Anders.

Early learning has changed; children start as preschoolers

A

s we turn the calendar to September, plans for back to school are well underway.

For this month, and for the next two or three months, we will look at general expectations for reading homework for different grade levels.

This will help us see the important role we play in supporting our children and grandchildren as they develop literacy skills. We will begin by considering our youngest students.

Early learning has changed. It used to be that first grade was the year in which students learned to read.

Today, many important beginning reading skills are practiced in preschool, and kindergarteners are expected to learn to read.

Preschoolers are learning about the sounds of language. Learning to

We can encourage these skills by singing children’s songs, reciting nursery rhymes and poems, and reading books full of rhymes.

Dr. Seuss books are perfect. Children enjoy the silly rhymes and quickly learn to repeat them.

Kindergarteners also benefit from continuing these activities.

Learning about letters also begins in preschool. Singing the alphabet song is one way to begin.

Children focus on recognizing the letters in their names at this stage as well.

They might also begin to notice and name letters in mom and dad, or in a sibling’s name.

We can support this by naming letters and pointing them out when we see them in print.

As our children and grandchil-

dren begin to recognize and name some letters, we can continue looking for and naming letters in the print around us.

Eventually children will need to learn the names of all 26 letters along with the sounds for which they stand.

That will likely be later in preschool but will certainly be a main focus in kindergarten.

Reading research shows that knowledge of letters and sounds is a predictor of how easily a child will learn to read, so we want to support this learning.

We can play games with letter sounds. We might try to make an oral list of things that start with a letter, perhaps the first letter of the child’s name.

There are also many online games for learning letter names and sounds that are motivating for children.

So far, this at-home support sounds like playing with letters, words, and sounds. That is really the case.

Whatever we do at home with our youngest learners should seem like play.

Sight words are words that are seen frequently in print. They are also called high-frequency words.

Beginning in kindergarten teachers will send home a list of a few sight words to work on every week, or perhaps every other week.

An example of an early list would be these words: I, the, and, me, see, and like.

Learning these words automatically helps early readers become more fluent readers.

We can play games like matching or bingo to learn these words.

Reading aloud is the single most important thing we can do for our early readers.

Doing so will model fluent reading and help them become excited to learn to read themselves.

Reading aloud, and really all the suggestions here, make a big difference for learning to read.

Of course, there is also value in spending time with, talking to, and interacting with our children and grandchildren. Nothing is better than that!

Lambrigtsen hired as OHS girls varsity basketball coach Wendy Lambrigtsen has been hired as Oregon High School’s varsity basketball coach, replacing Kristy Eckardt who resigned in July.

Lambrigtsen was previously the head coach of the Oregon girls’ program for three seasons, 1995-1998. She is a graduate of Mt. Morris High School where she played for Salley Wessels.

She went on to continue her playing career at Rockford College from 1988-1992.

“We are happy to have Wendy

lead our girls’ basketball program,” said Oregon Athletic Director Mike Lawton. “She has a vast amount of experience, having been around the game for many years in numerous capacities — including her time at Oregon in the mid 90s.

We are looking forward to having her back at OHS this winter.”

Oregon will open its season on Monday, Nov. 12 with a non-conference game at Rochelle.

Durand beats Oregon in two games in final

It was a championship game appearance by the Oregon volleyball team, but it wasn’t the result the Hawks hoped for on Sept. 1.

Durand, the third-place team at the IHSA 1A state tournament last year, handed Oregon a 25-15 and 25-23 loss in the 16-team, two-day Oregon Volleyball Tournament.

In the first game, Oregon got off to a 9-4 lead, but Durand went on a 20-5 run on its way to an easy victory.

“I think we lost our focus,” Oregon coach Faith McNamee said. “There were a lot of serving and attacking errors.”

Jasmine Herbst started the game with a service ace, Bailey Nelson had three kill and the Hawks had Durand reeling. Not for long, though.

After a block by freshman Jenae Bothe made it 9-4, the Bulldogs had eight unanswered points to take the lead for good.

A second tip of the game by Abi Hopkins and another ace by Herbst pulled Oregon to within 14-12. In the longest rally of the match, a tip

by Katie Nevdal upped the Durand advantage to 16-12.

Nevdal had a kill and the Bulldogs had a pair of blocks to make it 20-13.

“Durand runs a very fast offense,” McNamee said. “Normally, we don’t see it. It was good for us to play against it.”

In the second contest, Nelson had two early kills and Hannah Donaldson a tip to stake Oregon to a 5-4 lead.

Nelson kept the pressure on Durand with three more kills to keep her team within 11-10.

“Our defense was the key to winning,” Durand coach Molly Kelsey said. “We targeted in on number 10 (Nelson).”

The two teams continued to trade points with uncharacteristic Bulldog errors keeping it close. A big plus for the visitors was having two outside hitters - Nevdal and McKenzie Damon.

With the senior duo slamming the ball home during the final stretch of the game, they were able to withstand mistakes.

“We rely on those two and our setter (Marissa Kelsey) for getting it to them.”

Even with a star-studded line up they were facing, the Hawks came back from a 19-14 deficit to pull within 21-20 on a Jadyn Bothe tip. Hopkins scored to keep within a point at 22-21.

Finally, Damon hammered down three kills to close out the game.

“To be able to rally back will be a huge bonus later in the year, when our skills are honed,” McNamee said.

To advance to the championship game, Oregon won its pool against Aquin, East Peoria and Dakota. Then they beat pool champ Stockton in the semifinals, giving McNamee a great deal of satisfaction.

“That was one of the best team games we’ve had a several years,” McNamee said. “Almost every attacker had multiple kills. It was fun to watch. A great team wins, not just one person.”

Nelson and McKenna Sadler were named to the all-tournament team.

Turnovers plague Hawks in home opener G-K downs Oregon 35-7 at LandersLoomis Field

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In its football home opener, Oregon fell to Genoa-Kingston 35-7 in a game plagued with turnovers.

Coming in as an underdog, the Hawks needed every break they could get. Instead, they lost three fumbles and threw three interceptions.

A fourth interception was returned for a touchdown, but called back for a roughing-the-passer penalty.

“We had multiple turnovers and the majority were unforced,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said.

On the opening kickoff, 125-pound Jacob Milliman got pounded and fumbled the ball to Will Franson.

Taking over at the 27-yard line, G-K needed eight plays to score, even with an Oregon penalty added on.

“Hats off to coach Schneiderman and Oregon. They made us work for it,” G-K coach Chad Wilmarth said.

The Hawks forced a fourth-andfour, but Brett Marth got six yards and Kolin Fugate scored a play later from two yards out.

Oregon went 3-and-out, but Jake Mennen recovered a Cog fumble.

Unfortunately, Oregon gave the ball right back on an interception.

The Hawk defense continued to put pressure on, with Zach Crandall tackling quarterback Justin Peters for a loss and forcing a punt.

Once again, it was a Hawk turnover on the subsequent play, this time a fumble that stopped a drive inside Cog territory.

Trailing 22-7, Oregon had another opportunity on the G-K’s first drive of the second half. Crandall, who had three solos and four assists from his linebacker position, grabbed a fumble.

Oregon could not muster a first down, though, as Franson caught Mennen for a loss and Hermes was stuffed on a fourth down attempt.

“Will had a good game for us and the defense really stepped up,” said Wilmarth, who played fullback for Byron.

Peters hit Marth with a 40-yard bomb to get his team out of a first-and-25 situation. Then it was Marth outrunning the Hawk defense for an 18-yard touchdown and 28-7 lead.

Two plays later, Oregon fumbled the ball and G-K was quick to score on the short field. The shifty Peters went 22 yards for the

35-7 lead.

For good measure, Jake Stojan intercepted Finch for turnover number six.

G-K did drive inside the Hawk 10-yard line, but couldn’t score.

On the final possession, Oregon gained its most yards of the game, but wasn’t able to score.

“G-K really gets off the ball,” Schneiderman said.

“We weren’t able to. Our offense was sluggish.”

Hermes led all rushers with 97 yards on 19 carries, which many of those coming in the last drive. Oregon only had 153 yards of total offense. But, the most significant stat was the six turnovers.

Uncharacteristically, the Hawks also had seven penalties for 70 yards.

“That was a wide range of penalties,” Schniederman said. “We have to be more disciplined and that starts with me.”

Oregon hosts Dixon this Friday, a team they are still looking for a first-ever BNC win against in five years.

s I walked home following the Oregon and Genoa-Kingston football game, there was sense of satisfaction.

Though my team lost, it was a wonderful evening to be at Landers-Loomis Field.

For starters, and I say this ever year, the maintenance staff at OHS has the field in immaculate condition. Looking down from the bleachers, it was aesthetically pleasing to the eye, much like a work of art, should there be such a thing among small school stadiums.

There was a large and enthusiastic crowd. Credit to the school section for standing on their feet for the entire game and cheering even with the Hawks trailing.

Band, cheer and pom squads – it was all good stuff.

I particularly enjoyed the half-

There needs to be more of this between schools at all athletic events.

With 16 varsity players, Oregon gave all they had. There is no shame in losing to a solid program like G-K. It was excellent sportsmanship exhibited by both teams, with no cheap shots or badmouthing. The coaches on both sidelines were well behaved, which sets an example of the kids.

Anytime a coach starts blaming an official, it signals to his or her own players that they don’t need to be accountable. When things don’t

go your way, it’s someone else’s fault.

An added plus that evening was an excellent fresh-soph contest, one of the best I’ve seen in awhile at Oregon. That bodes well for the future.

Several years ago, I remember covering a few Byron games with a kid named Chad Wilmarth playing fullback. What a pleasure to see him as G-K head coach and to reflect in on-going relationships we get to have as sports reporters.

Byron, Forreston and Rochelle all have head coaches I used to cover. I never covered Mike Lalor of Stillman Valley as a player, but have become good friends because of 20 years doing his games.

Had I covered his loss against Byron Friday, I may have teased him afterwards that he was spending too much time protesting solar farms instead of working on the game plan.

Maybe not. Depending on a coach’s mood, us reporters have to be careful about what we say.

Another 20-year guy that makes Friday nights special is Sam Ramirez. How many other BNC schools have a radio duo like Sam

and Mark Herman, who have broadcasting the same football team for that long? None, that I know of.

That’s genuine Americana on display - two guys in a press box telling a weekly story on Oregon football.

On a beautiful evening, wasn’t it nice to see lightning in the distance and not have to deal with a mandatory 30-minute delay?

The IHSA has gone to a common sense approach, allowing officials to make a judgment call on the seriousness of the weather.

I truly doubt if I would have been in that same great mood, had the game been plagued by stoppages for no good reason, other than Draconian safety measures.

With a volleyball tournament going on in a stuffy Blackhawk Center, it dawned on me why beach volleyball has become so popular.

There’s something to be said for having your sport take place in the great outdoors, provided the weather is suitable and Friday was just right.

Yes, Friday was just right for being a Hawk fan.

OGLE COUNTY MEETINGS September meetings changed September meeting dates and times have been changed for the Ogle County

Board and Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee will meet at 3:30 p.m., instead of the scheduled

5:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in Room 319 on the third floor of the Ogle County Courthouse.

The county board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, instead of Sept. 18.

Mario Chavez, 61, of Silvis, was arrested at 6:02 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license and operating a vehicle with an expired registration.

Chavez was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 200 block of South Fourth Street.

Zachary L. Stanley, 35, of Oregon, was arrested at 9:06 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Stanley was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 300 block of Webster Street.

Aug. 28 At 4:38 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of South Second Street and Madison Street involving a 2005 Dodge driven by Uziel Chavez-Garcia, 29, of Rockford, and a 2013 Ford driven by Patti M. Gant, 27, of Amboy. Chavez-Garcia was issued a citation for failure to yield at a stop or yield intersection.

Aug. 30 Colton A. Brooks, 26, of Lanark, was issued a citation at 2 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of West Washington Street.

Aug. 31 Eugene J. Dzwierzynski, 57, of Oregon, was arrested at 12:56 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a domestic battery charge. Dzwierzynski was transported to the Ogle County jail.

Sept. 1 William H. Parkinson, 56, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 7 p.m. for failure to wear a seat belt as a passenger. This violation occurred in the 100 block of North Third Street.

Aug. 27 At 12:06 a.m., police responded to a domestic disturbance in the 200 block of South Third Street resulting in the arrest of Matthew D. Stevens, 36, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Stevens was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 3:34 p.m., police investigated a car vs pole traffic crash in the 100 block of West Washington Street involving a 2014 Nissan driven by Ellen K. Taylor, 56, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

At 4:53 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Gale Street and South Fifth Street involving a 2012 Volkswagen driven by Morgan C. Miraglia, 18, of Oregon, and a 2006 Jeep driven by Patricia A. Robles, 55, of Oregon. Miraglia was issued a citation for failure to yield at a stop or yield intersection.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Aug. 29 Brett Bradley, 37, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for drug court sanctions. Bradley did not have a bond, but is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 7.

Pracey Walton, 47, of Freeport, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for deceptive practice. Walton posted $7,500 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 10.

Gregory M. Bradford, 27, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Bradford’s full cash bond was set at $2,820.23 pending a court appearance.

Shane R. Brogan, 21, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for domestic battery. Brogan’s bond was set at $25,000 (10%) pending a court appearance.

Brian J. Miller, 33, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. His full cash bond was set at $1,922. Miller posted $601 and was released pending a Sept. 4 court appearance.

Shon E. Yarbrough, 40, of Savannah, Tennessee, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for contempt of court. Yarbrough posted $15,000 (10%) bond and was released. Yarbrough is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 21.

Aug. 30 At approximately 7:55 a.m., deputies responded to a one vehicle rollover accident in the 2200 block of West Montague Road. The driver and lone occupant, Deryl Beyer, were transported (by German Valley Fire & Ambulance) to Freeport Hospital for treatment of nonlife threatening injuries.

Dandre A .James, 39, of East Moline, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle

County warrant for failure to appear.

James’ full cash bond was set a $168 pending a court appearance.

Donnie J. Weeks, 27, of Loves Park, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. His full cash bond was set at $637 pending a court appearance.

Aug. 31 Taylor Crofoot, 21, of DeKalb, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for retail theft. Crofoot’s bond was set at $3,000 (10%). He was given a recognizance bond of $3,000 (10%) and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 10.

Henry Contreras, 57, of California, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Contreras’ bond was set at $1,125. He was given a bond reduction to $50 and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 24.

Deputies responded to a one vehicle crash at the intersection of Pines Road and Ridge Road west of Oregon. After and investigation it was determined that Rogelio Martinez-Dominguez, of Chicago, was traveling south on Ridge Road and failed to see the stop sign at the intersection until it was too late.

Martinez-Dominguez attempted to stop but struck stop sign and a telephone pole in the process. He was not injured in the crash.

Martinez-Dominguez was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license.

He was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Martinez-Dominguez was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond. the Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Oregon PD, Polo PD and the Oregon FD. At 9:44 p.m., deputies along with the Lynn Scott Rock Fire Department responded to a single vehicle injury crash on Illinois 251 near Lindenwood Road.

that a northbound vehicle driven by Miguel Cortes, 46, of Rockford, left the east side of the roadway and traveled into a cornfield where it overturned several times.

Cortes was extricated from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to Rochelle Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was arrested for driving while under the influence and improper lane usage. He was and released on an I-bond and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Sept. 1 At approximately 1:44 p.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident in the 9900 block of North Kishwaukee Road. An investigation revealed a northbound vehicle driven by Kenneth Strong of Rockford failed to navigate a curve in the roadway.

Strong’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck a southbound vehicle being driven by Terry Newcomer (age not listed) of Mt. Morris. Minor injuries were reported. The accident remains under investigation.

Sept. 2 Tabitha Vanbuskirk, 23, of Dixon, was arrested at 1:14 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic

stop in the 1000 block of North Illinois 2.

Vanbuskirk was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Deputies responded to two separate calls of an unwanted subject at 2121 N. Everett St. in Mt. Morris. After an investigation, Trei Sanders (age not listed) of Freeport was arrested for criminal trespass to property. Sanders was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Sept. 3 Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at 106 N. Locust Ave., in Forreston. After an investigation, Jessica Engelkens of Dixon was arrested for domestic battery. Engelkens was transported to the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Christopher G. Jimison, 30, of Chicago was arrested at 11:40 p.m. for driving while license suspended and obstructing justice following a traffic stop on I-39 at mile marker 111. Jimison was also cited for improper window tint and failure to notify the Illinois Secretary of State of an address change. Jimison was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

He was a member of the Polo Church of the Brethren, Ogle County Farm Bureau for more than 50 years, and was a dealer for Crow’s Hybrid Corn Company.

He enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing, hunting, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

“Gramps” loved to share the fruits of his labor, especially his roses and vegetables.

He was a faithful steward of the land his entire life.

Dean Hunter Humphreys, 98, of Polo, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018 at the Polo Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Dean was born on Jan. 20, 1920 in Limestone, Washington County, Tennessee to George and Oma (Phillips) Humphreys.

He was a graduate of the Conklin school.

At the age of 18, he moved to Polo and became a grain farmer and fed cattle and hogs until retirement.

He and Ruth Joyce Hambley were married on March 25, 1944 in Dixon by Rev. William Thompson at the Church of the Brethren parsonage. They celebrated 68 years together.

The 30-minute presentations will be held at 7 p.m. at Nash Recreation Center, 304 S. Fifth St. The meeting is one in a series that will be held in various locations across northern Illinois and will offer information CWD’s effect on future deer populations, and IDNR’s efforts to control the

KEITH R. LUDEWIG Keith R. Ludewig, 62, of Forreston died on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018 at Monroe Clinic Hospital, Monroe, Wisconsin.

He was born on Jan. 5, 1956 in Freeport to Marvin J. and Gladys (DeVries) Ludewig.

He married Marlys L. Buisker on April 9, 1983 in Woosung. She died on March 28, 2011.

Keith farmed and was an industrial technician at E.D. Etnyre & Co., Oregon, retiring in 2015.

He was a member of Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Eloyce (Theda Williams) Promenschenkel, of Crab Orchard, Kentucky; brothers, Gale (Nancy) Ludewig, of Forreston, and twin brother, Wayne (Cindy) Ludewig, of Forreston; sister, Donna (Robert) Orr, of Knoxville, Tennessee;and many nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and great-nieces.

Patricia Marie Wiesner, 90, of Oregon, died on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018 at Serenity Hospice and Home, Oregon, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on Sept. 2, 1927 in Chicago, the daughter of William and Florence (Rasch) Bryan.

Pat’s passions in life were her family and traveling.

Through the years Pat was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Pat was known as a world traveler and recently enjoyed her 18th trip to Africa.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Oregon.

Pat is survived by two children, Richard, of Oregon, and Claudia (Lowell) Wertz, of Kigoma Tanzania, five grandchildren, Richard Jr., David (Lara), Patrick (Christine), Kimberly (Daniel) Harrison; Luke (Kara) Wertz; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leroy, of 52 years; and

Biak Cung Nung, 23, of Rock Island, was stopped Aug. 23 for speeding at 11:18 p.m. on I- 88 westbound at milepost 40 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, no insurance, and speeding. He posted his driver’s license and was released on an I-bond.

Surrounded by her loving family, Dawn S. Rogers, 55, died on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018 at FHN Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

Dawn Susanne Rogers was born on June 20, 1963 in Freeport, to Harm and Donna (Greenfield) Smith.

She was a 1981 graduate of Forreston High School and attended Highland Community College and Rock Valley College.

She married Toby A. Rogers on March 26,1983 in German Valley.

She attended the Silver Creek Reformed Church, where she was a member of the choir, the praise team, the Women’s organization, and was Pioneer Club teacher.

Dawn will forever be remembered for her kind heart and generous spirit.

Dawn opened up her home to anyone in need, willingly sharing everything she had.

One of her great joys was watching others receive the gifts she had chosen for them.

She was an avid reader and expressed her thoughts and feelings eloquently in notes and cards.

Dawn adored her children and grandchildren, cherishing the time she spent with them.

She loved taking family vacations, most recently taking trips to the family condo in Kimberling City, Missouri.

She relished being an aunt to her nieces and nephews who thought of her as a “second mom.”

Survivors include her husband, Toby Rogers; three sons, Aaron (Rebeca Panos) Rogers, Jeremy (Kayla) Rogers, and Kyle Rogers, all of Freeport; grandchildren, Catie, Peyton, Toby, Whitley, and Rylan; mother, Donna Smith, of German Valley; two brothers, Todd Smith, of Freeport, and Trent Smith, of German Valley; two sisters, Starr (Joel) Flemming, of Freeport, and Heather (Bryan) Politsch, of Forreston; father-in-law, Robert Rogers, of Forreston; sister-in-law, Jaime Adamany, of Naperville; 10 nieces and nephews; close friend, Adam Luy; and her beloved dogs, Remmy and Zoey.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harm Smith on Dec. 10, 1992; and her mother-in-law, Jill Rogers on Aug. 13, 2016.

Memorial services for Dawn will be private.

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
