Cain named Oregon Citizen of the Year Awards also to Steve Rypkema and Super Valu

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Oregon’s newest Citizen of the Year was on his way to northern Wisconsin Aug. 16 when the awards were presented at the annual Chamber of Commerce Dinner.

Roger Cain said he had no idea he was receiving the award.

His first inkling came when one of the people with him started getting text messages to that effect.

“There’s very little cell phone service up there, and only one person with me had service at all,” he said chuckling. “His cell phone started blowing up with text messages.”

Cain said that during the previous week, Chamber Executive Director Debbie Dickson had tried to convince him to postpone his trip north long enough to attend the dinner.

“I definitely was surprised.

I appreciate it,” he said. “I like working behind the scenes. I like working for this community because it’s done so much for me.”

The recipient of the Business of the Year was also almost a no-show.

Jim Kaufman, owner of Oregon Super Valu, wasn’t sure how the dinner was going to fit into his hectic schedule.

His wife, Kim, however, had other ideas.

“When we got the invitation he mentioned he didn’t know if we could go because of our schedule being busy,” she said. “I told him I had everything arranged and we were going.”

Board member Bruce McKinney then made a motion to rearrange the agenda to delay the moratorium vote until after the votes on the special uses requests.

That motion also failed by a vote of 17-5.

Gouker said the Planning & Zoning Committee will study regulations already enacted in other places and consider if solar farms should fall under special uses or be an amendment to the counties’ zoning code.

The Regional Planning Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals will consider the Planning & Zoning Committee’s proposal, and all three will make recommendations to the county board, which will have the final vote.

A Stillman Valley man was appreciative Tuesday evening after the Ogle County Board declared a sixmonth moratorium on solar farms.

Mike Lalor, 7540 N. Kylewood Drive, Stillman Valley, spoke for most of the estimated 100 people who had crowded into the county board room to hear the board’s decision on three solar farms.

“In behalf of an awful lot of people here tonight, I want to thank you for approving the moratorium,” he said.

“Thank you for what you did.”

Lalor and many of his neighbors testified before the Zoning Board of Appeals, saying they did not want the solar farms so near their homes.

Many of the people in the crowd wore round stickers on their shirts that read “no solar plant” in capital letters.

County board chairman Kim Gouker, of Byron, said the moratorium was needed to get regulations in place before more solar farms are considered.

“I think we made a mistake not to create a solar farm ordinance before we started to deal with them,” he said.

The board has already approved three solar farms near Forreston, Mt. Morris, and Davis Junction, which will not be affected by the moratorium.

Due to the board’s action, three requests went on the back burner for special use permits to allow solar farms on property zoned for agricultural use in the Stillman Valley area: one on 55.3 acres owned by Ronald and Carolyn Pifkin in the 7000 block of Hales Corner Road, the second on 52.68 acres owned by Dan Terhark at 8248 N. Kishwaukee Rd., and the third on 146.78 acres owned by the Stocking Family Trust in the 7000 block of Hales Corner Road.

FFP IL Community Solar LLC, San Francisco, California, is leasing the Pifkin and Terhark properties, while SunEast Development LLC, West Chester, Pennsylvania, is leasing the Stocking land.

Planning & Zoning Committee Chairman Dan Janes, of Stillman Valley, recommended the moratorium because, he said, the county has no zoning ordinances to govern solar farms and needs time to draw them up.

Kim agreed. “It was humbling. I’m very grateful to the community and the chamber,” she said. “I’m very proud of everybody at the store and how hard they work every day.”

Dickson described the Kaufmans’ low key but generous approach to doing business.

“For more than 40 years this family owned business has been an anchor in our midst, demonstrating a ‘quiet’ commitment to meeting the needs of our community,” she said. “Never seeking acknowledgment, thanks or recognition, this business has generously donated to more fundraisers, organizations, events, dinners, sports teams, and youth programs than any of us could ever fathom.”

Jim thanked the community when he accepted the award.

“I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for this community.

I’m very proud to be part of this community,” he said. “I started out as a little kid in my father’s business.”

Dickson described Volunteer of the Year Steve Rypkema as “a quiet, kind, and unassuming-individual [who] gives generously of both time and talent.”

She gave a long list of the organizations Rypkema, who is also the director of the Ogle County Solid Waster Management Department, has volunteered to help.

“Working tirelessly, without thought to personal needs, schedule, or inconvenience this proactive spirit among us has a passion for helping people, our community, and particularly the environment,” she said. “Known as the ‘neighborhood go to’ this person can be found mowing someone’s lawn or sharpening a dull blade, or perhaps baking bread for someone in need of comfort.”

Rypkema gave credit back to the community.

“All the things I’ve been involved in also involved members of the community. It takes a village,” he said.

The Civic Leadership Award went to local First Responders and honored the Oregon Police Department, Oregon Fire Department, and Ogle County Sheriff’s Department.

Hazel’s Cafe and owner Candace Rivera was recognized with the Welcome to Oregon Award for a business less than two years old.

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Despite information released last week that only $35,000 remains to raised for Black Hawk Statue repairs, a local fundraiser says the amount actually is still approximately $90,000.

Eric Schenck, executive director of the Illinois Conservation Foundation, said in an Aug. 15 press release that “about $35,000 is all that is left to be raised after the Etnyre and Oregon Together donations, plus pledges made by local foundations, are taken into account.”

Roger Cain, a member of the Oregon Together Black Hawk Restoration Team, said Monday that the$55,000 difference is pledges, not money actually in the coffers.

“We’re down to needing $90,000,” Cain said. “Inside that $90,000, we have commitments for some of that but we don’t have the money yet.”

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which has jurisdiction over the statue, will not issue contracts for the work until all the money has been received.

“The money really needs to be in the bank before the state will issue those contracts,” he said. “Some commitments may not be available until October.”

Cain told the restoration team as much at a meeting on Aug. 7.

He said Monday that he is concerned that individuals or organizations planning to donate may now believe no more funds are needed.

For several months, the resto-

ration team has been raising the private funds required to obtain a matching state grant for $350,000 finally approved by the Illinois General Assembly in late May. The cost of the repairs is estimated at $600,000.

In early July, $59,000 was in the statue repair fund, which is administered by the Illinois Conservation Foundation in Springfield.

Then in mid-July, a $100,000 donation came in from E.D. Etnyre and Company, Oregon.

Other fund-raising efforts, both locally and at the Cliff Dwellers meeting in Chicago brought in more funds.

The contracts between the IDNR and Quality Restorations Inc., of Wood Dale, will be signed once the private money has been raised, Cain said, which means the work will

probably begin next spring rather than later this year.

The 48-foot statue, made of concrete and created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1910 as a tribute to Native Americans, is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Rock River at Lowden State Park near Oregon.

Time and weather have significantly damaged the surface of the landmark, which was unveiled in 1911.

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The rain wasn’t exactly what Jeff Bold and his crew of big bison builders had in mind on Monday.

Bold and a group of mostly Mt. Morris volunteers are building a giant bison — 11 feet tall and 16-17 feet long — that they hope to have completed in time for Straw Fest on Saturday.

“Our goal is to have it done by the 25th,” Bold, a member of Encore! Mt. Morris, said Monday afternoon.

The rain shut down operations on Monday, but he hoped to be up and running again on Tuesday morning.

The bison is part of the third annual U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition, which opened Aug. 10 on the downtown campus in Mt. Morris and will continue through Sunday.

Mt. Morris, culminates on Saturday with several community activities.

Bold based his plan for a giant straw animal on a Japanese tradition of building large animals from rice straw after the harvest.

The idea for a straw bison was born out of a trip to the Nachusa Grasslands.

“The bison came right up to the fence,” Bold said. “Also it’s the Illinois Bicentennial this year — and what was the largest animal roaming around here back then?”

The base of the bison is made from lumber and PVC pipe wrapped with chicken wire. The legs are iron pipes.

The community — and anyone else who is willing — are all invited to join in the build which is happening along Ill. 64 behind Union Savings Bank.

Since Aug. 13 when the build

began, an estimated 20 people have pitched in to first wrap the chicken wire around the framework and since Aug. 17 attach straw bundles to the chicken wire.

Some of the crew has returned every day to work as long as they can — some days eight or nine hours.

“There’s a steady half dozen who have been there faithfully,” Bold said.

A few visitors to the straw compe-

tition in the downtown have stopped to wrap a few bundles of straw onto the bison, as well.

By Sunday night, the bison’s back half and undercarriage were covered with straw.

On the downtown campus, the sculptures include the “Headless Horseman” by Danica Rogers, “Straw”Bine: Harvest Time” by Kathy Driscoll, “The Garden” by Steve Lentz, “Huff and Puff” by Kate May Fitch, “StrawSquatch” by Chris Mann, and “Stretchy Cat” by Kelly Madison.

Several sculptures from last year are also on display.

This year’s competition will be judged for two awards: People’s Choice with public voting by all visitors, and Artist’s Choice with voting by the competing sculptors.

The winners will be announced during the festival’s grand finale weekend.

Blacksmith demos, mechanical bull riding, round bale races, square dancing in the street (experienced and inexperienced all welcome), and food in the evening with Lyle Grobe & the Rhythm Ramblers live on the band shell stage will be featured on Saturday.

The village will celebrate the Illinois Bicentennial with historical hay wagon tours on Sunday, Aug. 26.

Other activities during the straw sculpting competition include Fiber Art Through Time, a fine arts exhibit in Encore’s Old Sandstone Gallery, and live music on the campus.

Lebwick remembers Oregon in the early 1900s Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The following information is from Viewpoint, An Oral History given by Gene Lebwick Sr. in 1975.

Our store was established on March 1, 1896 by my father Herman Lebwick.

I more or less grew up in the business from a small boy, you might say.

After I graduated from the University of Illinois, I didn’t think I wanted any part of this.

My dad asked me if I wouldn’t help out for a few weeks until he got a new man.

Because he was short one man, I said absolutely, “I’d be most happy.”

I’m still here and that’s going on 52 years. Here I still am.

But, I’m a native. I was born and raised here and our family grew up here.

But going back in the history of 1900. Adjacent to Lebwick’s was the Rumery and Farrell Grocery Store, and Liberty Hill is in the background. If you were to go back when I started to school, Oregon was all dirt streets and many board sidewalks and many out-houses and outside plumbing.

Many homes had no electricity or telephones.

There were lots of old sidewalks, made out of tar, like they put on streets, tar and stone.

Of course, the face of the downtown business district is changed and so are the former businesses that were here when I started.

Downtown we had many business places, that were wooden-framed buildings and that were antique built back in the 1800s.

And there were a few that were built like ours. This is possibly one of the best built structures in the city because it’s built here to stay.

It’s brick facing with tremendous stone walls and very sturdy.

I just read in the Oregon Republican Reporter that Mr. and Mrs. Dick Jones bought the building where the C and I tavern is located and that is supposed to be just about the oldest building in Oregon right now.

tary and high school was 350 students.

That is a far cry from what we have today, as there are 2,000 students today in the combined schools.

We didn’t have basketball or football, which had been ruled out on account of injuries.

It was pretty rugged without all the good padding they have today to wear for protection.

We didn’t have a band but we had a high school orchestra, in which I played the fiddle.

And Charlie Robbins’ wife was the pianist and Herb Connors played the violin.

Only Irma Robbins and I are left of that group.

Doug will share the Wean family history with the U. S. Navy Service. His father,

Charles, joined the Navy and served during WWII. Doug and his two older brothers were Navy veterans during the Korean war and in Vietnam.

Doug served in Vietnam with the 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade and with “K: Battery, 4th Battalion 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam.

His last overseas post was in Scotland with the NATO Forces, U. S. Security Group Activity.

Kishwaukee College Therapeutic Massage graduates participated in a traditional pinning ceremony on Aug. 8, in Jenkins Auditorium in the Kishwaukee College Theatre.

The graduates in Therapeutic Massage were: Kelsie Appleton, Rockford; Sheila Donmeyer, Oregon; Carmen Gary, Cortland; Renee Larson, DeKalb; Felicia Olson, Genoa; Jasmine Painter, Rochelle; and Whitney Sprague, DeKalb.

The tradition of pinning healthcare graduates originates with the nursing profession in 1860 when Florence Nightingale presented a lapel pin to her best students.

Over the years, other healthcare professions have added the practice to their graduation traditions to symbolize an official initiation into the students’ chosen healthcare profession.

During the ceremony, each graduate was pinned individually by a friend or family member who had supported the student or acted as a mentor.

The graduates also enjoyed addresses by Dr. Laurie Borowicz, President of Kishwaukee College; Bette Chilton, Dean of Health and Education; Leslie Ciaccio, Coordinator of the Complementary Health Programs; and student speaker Felicia Olson.

The graduates and their families and friends also enjoyed a short slideshow, created by Sara Rutsky, from Kishwaukee Education Consortium, that recapped their progress through the program. Graduates, family and friends enjoyed light refreshments after the ceremony.

The Barb City Stompers is a trad through swing band that was formed in 2004, but the pedigree of some of the players goes back well beyond that date.

Colson and Leek are inductees at Cordova Saturday, Aug. 25 Eight legends and contributors in the sport of drag racing will be inducted into the inaugural World Series of Drag Racing Hall of Fame class, on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the Cordova International Raceway.

Ron Colson, of Mt. Morris, and Ron Leek, of Byron, are among the Class of 2018 Inductees for the World Series of Drag Racing Hall of Fame.

Colson grew up in Oregon and as a teenager snuck his first ride down the quarter-mile borrowing his sister’s 1957 MG Roadster at the Cordova International Raceway.

Colson was also a six-decade employee of Cordova International Raceway.

Leek is the former owner of Byron Dragway. More than 40 years ago, he became the first promoter to introduce big bucks bracket racing to local competitors.

Other inductees are: Robert J. “Bob” Bartel, forever known as the man who built Quad City Drag Strip in Cordova; Don “Big Daddy” Garlits, the 17-time World Champion driver who amassed 144 national event titles; Shirley Muldowney, the first woman to receive a license to drive a Top Fuel Dragster; Arnie “The Farmer” Beswick who won numerous national events; Richard Hutchins, driver and owner of the famous Chevy Rebellion wheelstander; and Diamond Jim Crownhart, the former president of United Drag Racers Association who worked for 42 years as an iron worker out of Rockford; “This track is legendary for being the oldest continuous running race track in the Midwest,” Cordova International Raceway President and General Manager Dominic Blasco said. “What a perfect track with all of its history to introduce the Hall of Fame. Second Breakfast to perform at Fifth Friday H.I. Lincoln Building to host event Aug. 31 is a Fifth Friday...and that makes it part of a continuing music tradition at the historic H.I. Lincoln Building in Franklin Grove.

The special feature for August’s Fifth Friday will be psychologist-journalist-musician Lowell Harp paired with Second Breakfast, Tracy Fleck and Jim Vancko, two nuclear engineers who make music when they aren’t generating electricity.

Harp leads with guitar and vocals while Fleck is also a capable lead vocalist as well as a master of both guitar and mandolin.

Vancko provides a solid base line on the upright bass along with back-up vocals and - with very little provocation, a steady stream of humor.

Their music covers a wide spectrum including folk, country, blues, bluegrass, and light rock.

The 10th Annual Oregon Area Rock River Sweep will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Check in will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Kiwanis Park, behind Conover Square, at the intersection of North Second Street and Franklin Street.

Volunteers are needed on foot or in boats to clean up a nine mile section of the Rock River, from north of the boat landing on Illinois. 2 to the Castle Rock State Park boat landing, for this annual effort to protect and preserve this beautiful local resource.

“The Rock River is the country’s newest national river trail, so let’s work to keep it looking its best,” said organizer Terry Schuster. “Boaters, paddlers, river land owners, scout groups, service organizations and individuals are needed to help pick up trash as well as sort the recyclable items from the trash. Students can earn community service hours by helping out.”

White Pelican Canoe & Kayak Rental Inc. will be providing a limited number of canoes for use for the sweep and will also provide free shuttle service from Castle Rock boat landing back to Kiwanis Park for those with their own canoes or kayaks.

“Last year, around 50 people participated in the effort,” Schuster said. “With the water level currently normal for the Rock River, it is expected that a lot of waste will be visible and exposed for easy identification and removal.”

All participants are asked to check in at the Kiwanis Park, where they will be assigned to a section of the river to focus on.

Those with motorized boats can then proceed to the boat landings to cover their section.

Those on foot will walk or drive to areas accessible from shore. Several drop-off sites for trash will be located along the cleanup route, where crews from the Oregon Park District, and the Solid Waste Management Department will pick it up and take it back to Kiwanis Park for sorting and recycling.

Refreshments will be available afterward.

Gloves, safety vests, trash bags, bug spray, snacks and water will be available, as well as a limited number of T-shirts for sale.

Participants are encouraged to wear long sleeves, long pants, and old shoes, and to bring a reusable water bottle to the event to reduce waste.

The Byron Park District’s recently renovated Kathryn A. Hamas Memorial Park located at 108 E. Diamond Street in Byron contains new walking trails, playground, shelter and fishing piers along with new kayak launch and floating boat docks.

Approximately 3.9 miles downstream, the Byron Forest Preserve District has installed identical kayak launches and floating boat docks at their He-Leo Two Rivers

Forest Preserve located at the confluence of the Rock River and Leaf River at 6065 North Illinois 2 in Oregon.

This 48 acre preserve has a picnic shelter, portable toilets, hiking trails, restored oak savannas and wetland areas. It is a haven for a wide variety of birds and other wetland wildlife species.

A leisurely kayak trip from Kathryn A. Hamas Memorial Park to the He-Leo Two Rivers Forest Preserve takes about 60 to 90 minutes depending on the weather conditions. Both facilities can be accessed by car from Illinois 2.

Merrill and Buck to lead Hawk golfers in 2018

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com For Oregon boys golf, Adam Merrill will be seeking a fourth straight sectional qualification.

Entering his senior year, Merrill has advanced out of the regional since entering school and is looking for that coveted trip downstate.

“He has a lot of ability with his driver and long irons,” Hawk coach Jim Spratt said. “If Adam can mas-

ter his putter and chips, he could get down to the mid 30s. He needs to focus on it.”

Last season, Merrill averaged 41 for nine holes, highlighted by an individual title at the Byron Tiger Shootout.

Challenging Merrill will be fellow senior Jackson Buck. Buck started the dual-meet segment of the season with medalist honors at Rock Falls with a 39.

“Jackson’s game is really pro-

gressing. His game is precision,” Spratt said. “His whole family has been great for the program.”

Other likely varsity starters are Case Sellers, Jarrett Dietrich, Nicholas Beitel and Edwin Buttens.

For the girls, senior Isabelle Nelson and junior Lizzy Villareal have been leading the way with scores around 50 in early duals. Helena Holden-Fox and Kaitlyn Janssen will back up that pair.

Spratt has 13 girls out, with many

of them young and inexperienced.

“As a whole, the athleticism of the group has improved,” Spratt said.

“With the inexperience, our best part of the season will be towards the end.

A lot of teams play best early because of all the summer play.”

The overwhelming favorite in the BNC for the girls is state power Rockford Lutheran. For the boys, Spratt sees Rock Falls, Rockford Christian and Winnebago as the teams to beat.

In the past five years under Faith McNamee, the Oregon volleyball program has averaged 28 wins a season, along with three regional titles.

The only thing missing with that impressive resume is a sectional title and beyond.

Last year, the Hawks lost to Orion 25-21 and 25-23 in a very competitive and closely matched sectional at the Blackhawk Center.

As has been the case before, the goal remains the same for what has become the showcase sports program at OHS – to get to state.

“That is our ultimate goal,” McNamee said.

It will be six returning seniors that will be called upon to make that happen.

“It’s the biggest group I’ve had since I’ve been coaching,” McNamee said.

Last year, the Hawks only had two seniors, but losing Gylian Finch and Aleah Wight hurts.

“It was only two we lost, but they were two great players and high energy girls,” McNamee said. “On the first day of practice, we had to figure out a new chemistry.”

McNamee is hopeful that chemistry will pay dividends, especially with seniors that have been playing together all through high school.

“I don’t know if we will be the most talented team, but chemistry and working together can beat talent,” she added.

It also helps having college recruit Bailey Nelson on the roster. As a junior last year, she teamed up with

“Abi did a fantastic job this summer leading the team,” McNamee said. “She will be playing on the outside for us.”

Hannah Donaldson saw valuable time coming off the bench last year and is deceivingly effective for someone with a smaller stature.

“Hannah will be in the middle again. She’s very athletic and has fluid movement,” McNamee said.

McNamee plans to use those six seniors to make up the core of the line up, at least to start the year. She does have two underclassmen on reserve in sophomore Ella Martin and freshman Jenae Bothe.

Martin, who saw time last season, will back up Herbst as a setter and Bothe will be in the middle.

Oregon has 13 on varsity, with the other five being used primarily in jayvee action. Those girls will also fill in on varsity as needed. All together, there are 29 in the program.

“They’re all in. I’m excited,” McNamee said.

When asked about team strengths, McNamee mentioned communication between the seniors.

“We will mix it up in the front row,” she said. “We hope to be more diverse and use a variety of attacks.”

Losing Finch certainly alters team strategy and though opponents may key on Nelson, the plan is to have multiple ways to score.

With nearly its entire team back, Rockford Lutheran should be the team to beat in the Big Northern.

“Rock Falls is always good too,” McNamee said.

Chemistry to be the key for Hawks soccer team

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com It’s year number three for Seger Larson at the helm of Oregon soccer. What makes it more special for the Shabbona resident is being hired full-time as physical education teacher for OHS district.

He’s also excited about what could be the best team chemistry in the three years and internal leadership.

“They’re buying into to what I have been trying to do,” Larson said. “We also have some individuals, like Brigham Finch and Josh Sitze, taking initiative to provide leadership.”

Finch and Sitze will be the go-to guys for scoring on offense, with an emphasis on maintaining possession and ball control. Sitze is especially creative with the ball. Finch will be a forward.

“We need to control the ball because we aren’t as fast as other teams. Speed is one of our weaknesses,” Larson said.

Senior Jonathan Acosta will be moving from defense to offense to bolster the loss of Eduardo Guzman. Last year, Acosta only played five games because of hamstring problems.

Another tough task is finding a goalkeeper to replace Jaspreet Gill. A youngster may fill that void.

“Owen Ketter, a sophomore, is promising for a young guy.

He is vocal,” Larson said.

Offense will be Oregon’s strength compared to its defense and its relative inexperience.

Some of the defenders are Ryan and Logan Lazansky and Eli Rufer. Also stepping up to varsity play are sophomores Jayden Davis, Adam Thorsen and Alan Acosta.

“We have some new freshmen on varsity that will help out – Liam Dickson-Harriet and Joey Gelander. We also got a cross country runner in Ryan Hussung,” Larson said.

One problem for the 2017 Hawks (7-13-3) was consistency. That is something Larson hopes will be improved.

“We have a lot of young guys making the effort, being responsible and taking on leadership,” Larson said. “I like what I am seeing so far.”

Oregon will be hosting the 10-team Hawk Classic on Aug. 24-25 at Park West. It is an early test to see how much endurance the young team has, with a heavy load of games scheduled.

In the BNC, Larson sees perennial power Stillman Valley and Dixon as the teams to beat. “Last year, Stillman came in with major graduation losses and still won the conference,” Larson said. “Dixon has Oregon’s Alan Acosta fights off Byron’s Evan Walters to make a pass during Tuesday action in Byron.

What will 2018 season bring for area teams?

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Summer vacation is over and time to get back to work with year number five of this weekly sports column.

For the boys, Forreston needs to replace a star-studded class of seniors, Oregon looks to rebound from two wins in football, basketball and baseball combined and Polo has been in the headlines for taking a stand on 8-man football and possessing what could be a special basketball team.

To be frank, my knowledge of the girls sports scene is not as encompassing, primarily because I haven’t covered as many of their games as

the boys.

I know that Forreston is competitive in all girls sports, but is still waiting for a breakout in the post season. Polo has struggled as of late, though there appears to be some talent in the younger classes.

Oregon faces a challenge with a new basketball coach coming in and

the volleyball team lost one D-I player, but brings back another.

Looking ahead to this fall, a couple big stories are whether Forreston football and Oregon volleyball will continue their winning ways.

Le-Win is getting all the hype as NUIC favorite, much the same way Forreston did last year in the pre-season.

My early prediction is that Forreston will be exceptionally good again. Can they match up with Le-Win? A bigger question for both Le-Win and Forreston football will occur in the playoffs, as Aurora Christian is listed as 1A, this after having success at 3A and 4A previously.

The reason AC is 1A, is that they have not won a playoff game in four years and are no longer subject to the IHSA’s enrollment multiplier or success factor.

Rockford Boylan’s football team is in the same scenario, going down to 4A after state titles 6A and 7A in 2010 and 2011.

It seemed like the simple multiplier worked better than the complicated success factors.

Oregon will be good at volleyball again, but the fact remains that this sport is extremely competitive at the high-school level. Unlike other girl sports, where there can be easier post-season paths, volleyball in this area doesn’t allow for that.

Rinse out bottles and cans and flatten cardboard boxes The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department offers reminders about recycling in Ogle County.

With global markets for recycling feedstock shrinking, it is more important than ever to recycle right.

The OCSWMD encourages all residents to recycle common household materials, such as newsprint, clean cardboard, paperboard boxes, junk mail, magazines, catalogs, office

paper, file folders, food and beverage cartons, aluminum and steel cans, glass bottles and jars, and plastic items marked 1-5 and 7.

Anyone who lives in a city or village in Ogle County should use the curbside service to recycle as many of the above items as possible.

Avoid placing trash in with recyclables, as this ruins recyclables and then they head to the landfill instead.

Call the OCSWMD or ask the local waste hauler about what materials are to be included with curbside recyclables.

The OCSWMD funds and maintains five comingled recycling bins in Ogle County.

These bins are located in Byron, Forreston, Monroe Center, Oregon, and Rochelle.

A bin is also at the Orchard Hills Landfill in Davis Junction provided by Advanced Disposal and a bin in Polo provided by Moring Disposal.

These bins are for use by those who do not have the convenience of The same curbside service. materials listed above can go into these bins.

Be sure to rinse out cans, bottles, and jugs, flatten all cardboard boxes, and flatten plastic bottles and jugs and replace the cap prior to placement into the bin.

Out of Darkness to Fight Suicide Walk is Sept. 15 Walk begins at 9 a.m. at Lowell Park Serenity Hospice CNA Jen Bemis knows the heartbreak of suicide all too well.

Her father killed himself in 1988, and earlier this year Bemis received the unimaginable news that her 23-year-old-niece had also killed herself.

“Suicide has impacted my life not once, but twice,” she said.

“That is why the upcoming Out of the Darkness Walk to Fight Suicide is important to me.”

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Preven-

tion, which hosts the walk, more than 44,000 Americans die by suicide each year and it is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.

In Illinois, one person dies by suicide every six hours.

The Out of the Darkness Sauk Valley Community Walk is Saturday, Sept. 15 at Lowell Park in Dixon beginning at 9 a.m.

“I have started Team Marissa in memory of my niece and my goal is to raise $2,500,” said Bemis.

Serenity Hospice, where Bemis works is supporting Bemis and others affected by suicide by becoming a sponsor of the event.

“Unfortunately we have treated more and more people affect-

ed by suicide in our bereavement department,” said Cathy Warren Bereavement Coordinator at Serenity. “We do not limit our grief services to just those served by hospice. We open these services up free of charge to the community.”

Aug. 13 At 12 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash involving a 2013 Chevrolet driven by Jena L. Wehmhoefer, 31, of Oregon, and a 2006 Ford driven by Lori L. Fagan, 60, of Oregon.

No citations were issued.

Aug. 14 Larry E. Barnes, III, 29, of Oregon, was arrested at 10:48 p.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant for failure to appear.

Barnes was also issued a traffic citation for operating a vehicle with an expired registration and a civil citation for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams.

Barnes was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 200 block of South Fourth Street.

Aug. 17

Isaiah C. Snapp, 17, of Chana, was issued a citation at 6:32 p.m. for speeding, too fast for conditions. This violation occurred in the high school student parking lot.

Nathan M. Donoho, 26, of Dixon, was arrested at 10:22 p.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant for failure to appear.

Donoho was also issued citations for driving while license suspended and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Donoho was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 500 block of North Sixth Street.

Aug. 13 At 1:33 p.m., deputies responded to a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Illinois 72 and Pecatonica Road.

After an investigation it was determined that a Chevrolet Silverado pick-up being driven by William Jaworski, 76, of Elk Grove Village failed to reduce his speed to avoid a vehicle driven by LaDonna Countryman, 60, of Mt. Morris who was turning north onto Pecatonica Road.

There were no injuries to anyone involved in the incident. Jaworski was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Aug. 14 At approximately 5 a.m., deputies located a Honda Crosstour stopped in the middle of the intersection of Montague Road and Pecatonica Road. The vehicle was being driven by Michael R. Sanchez, 24, of Leaf River.

It was determined that Sanchez had run out of gas and the vehicle stalled. It was also found that Sanchez has never been issued a driver’s license in Illinois or any other state.

Sanchez was arrested for driving without a license and given an individual bond at the scene. He is due to appear in Ogle County Court at a later date.

Fuel was obtained for the vehicle and it was released to a valid driver.

•Jason Bennett, 48, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Bennett’s bond was set at $292 pending a court appearance.

• Charlena Pempilton, 34, of Freeport, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Pempilton’s bond was set at $411 pending a court appearance.

• Ciara Ancona, 31, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for possession of a controlled substance and failure to appear. Ancona’s bonds were set at $1,500 (10%) and $3,354 pending a court appearance.

Aug. 16 • Jesus Alanis, 41, of West Chicago, was arrested for driving while license suspended after being stopped on Illinois 251 for speeding.

At 3 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on a motor-driven bicycle in the 6000 bock of North Illinois 2.

After a short investigation Timothy Valdivia, 25, of Oregon, was arrested for driving while license revoked. He was also arrested on an outstanding Whiteside County warrant for failure to appear. Deputies were assisted by D & W Garage.

Aug. 17 •Jose Manriquez, 39, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while under the influence near Stillman Valley after he was stopped for driving in the wrong lane of traffic. Manriquez was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 21 at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Forreston with Pastor Scott Ralston officiating.

Burial was at White Oak Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Shriners Hospital for Children.

Richard A. Mount Richard A. (Rick) Mount, 63, died on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2018 of natural causes at his home in Deltona, Florida.

Rick was born on Dec. 20, 1954 in Dixon, the second child of Russell and Louise Mount.

He attended and graduated from the Polo public schools. He graduated from Bradley University with an engineering degree and worked many years at Mount Plumbing and Heating in Polo.

Rick married Sandy Scudder on Nov. 29, 1980 in Polo. They lived in Polo with

daughter, Kelly and son, Shaun.

In 1988 they moved to Deltona, Florida, where Rick continued his plumbing career. He retired in 2014.

Rick enjoyed his family, riding his motorcycle, and farming on his small acreage in Polo.

Rick and Sandy divorced in 2000 but still maintained close familial relationships including five grandchildren, whom he cherished.

Surviving family include his sister, Carol (Dewayne) Hartle, of Sarasota, Florida; and brother, Tim (Robin) Mount, Village of Lakewood; his aunt,

Sharon Gricius, Lakeland, Florida; ex-wife, Sandy Mount, of DeLand, Florida; stepson, Shaun Scudder, of DeLand, Florida; stepsisters, Lisa (James) Olmsted, of Verona, Wisconsin, and Andrea Schelb, of Mt. Dora, Florida; stepbrother, Scott (Cynthia) Reed, Sycamore; grandchildren, Logan Sweeting, at Holloman Air Force Base in Otero, New Mexico, Travis Sweeting, DeLand, Florida, and Kaylee Sweeting, of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Ashley Scudder, of High Springs, Florida; great-grandchildren, Olivia, Brittany and Shelly Sweeting, of New

Mexico; five nieces and nephews, Trent (Jill) Hartle, of Seattle, Washington, Cherie (Jeff) Vajdik, of Bradenton, Florida, Brecken (Kyle) Haak, of Stillman Valley, Paige (Scott) Sidlo, of Crystal Lake, and Trevor Mount, of Huntley.

Rick was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Elaine; and stepdaughter, Kelly Scudder.

Rick requested to be cremated with no burial or memorial.

He was a kind and gentle soul who will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Rhodes was released on an I-bond.

Aug. 12 Felix Vega, 47, of Rochelle, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped at 12:57 a.m. on McConaughy Drive at Main Street in Rochelle and was wanted on two Ogle County warrants for theft and retail theft.

Vega was also charged with obstructing identification. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Joseph P. Mallard, 70, of Dixon, was stopped for using a cell phone while driving at 5:17 p.m. on Galena Avenue at Fellows Street in Dixon and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, unlawful transportation of alcoholic liquor, civil possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia, no insurance, and operating a motor vehicle while using an electronic communication device.

Mallard posted a driver’s license and $100 and was released.

Mohamad W. Alshardini, 25, of Burbank, was stopped for speeding at 11:32 p.m. on Perry Road at Interstate 39 in Ogle County and charged with driving while license suspended, speeding, and failure to dim headlights. Alsharbini was released on an I-bond.

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE The Illinois State Police reported the following activities in District 1, headquartered in Sterling.

Aug. 11 Dennis M. Rhodes, 29, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was stopped for speeding at 9:47 p.m. on Interstate 39 northbound at milepost 103 in Ogle County and charged with driving while license suspended, speeding, and failure to wear seatbelt.

Lewis “Brum” R. DeGraff, 87, died on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018 at Manor Court of Freeport.

He was born on May 23, 1931 in Freeport, the son of Lewis W. and Flora (Russell) DeGraff.

He married Betty Young on June 16, 1957 in Forreston.

Lewis was a 1949 graduate of Forreston High School and in 1953 earned his bachelor of science degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University.

Upon graduation, Lewis returned home to work on the farm and later in the insurance business.

His job titles included Executive Vice

President & Chief Operating Officer, Illinois Beef Industry Council and Executive Vice President, Illinois Livestock Association.

Lewis’ organizational affiliations included Trinity Lutheran Church, Lanark Masonic Lodge, Freeport Scottish Rite Bodies, Rockford Tebala Shrine, Carroll County Farm Bureau, Illinois Angus Association, American Angus Association, and Northern Illinois Angus Association.

Fall mums are available in a variety of colors for $7 each. Orders will be taken through Friday, Aug. 31.

These plants are grown in northern Illinois and will arrive just in time for fall decorating.

Mums are field grown in natural conditions, leading to a more hardy robust plant.

ROCK RIVER CENTER WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE ROCK RIVER CENTER (All ages are welcome to participate in programming) Call for Art! The Rock River Center will be hosting an Art Showing and Sale for surrounding area artists.

The goal is to introduce area artists and their work to the public. At this event the artist will be able to show and sell their work. The Center’s goal is to have a good mix of area art such as wood, glass, paintings, and other artwork.

Groups Information Cancer Support Group “Facing the Challenge” is a support group that provides a safe, accepting environment for patients currently going through treatment, survivors, caregivers and loved ones to talk openly about the challenges a cancer diagnosis brings.
