After the Fire: Family begins clean-up Koper home destroyed in July 16 blaze

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Friends and neighbors have rallied around a rural Oregon family in the aftermath of a fire that destroyed their home last week.

A fast-moving fire swept through the home of retired Ogle County Deputy Al Koper, his daughter Tanya Koper-Bowers, and her two teenage daughters at 2589 W. Oregon Trail Rd. on July 16, destroying the building and its contents, including Al’s pick-up truck which was parked in the attached garage.

With the help of friends, the family sorted through the charred remains of their possessions late last week to find anything that might be salvageable.

Koper-Bowers said nearly everything was burned beyond use.

“Dad did find his baby book. We’re just trying to salvage what we can.” she said on Saturday. “There are a couple of sewing machines we hope to get out, but

we’ll see.”

Samantha Bowers, 16, was busy working with a family friend in 90-degree heat searching for salvageable items from the home’s living room.

They meticulously reached into a charred display case carefully lifting soot-covered glassware through broken glass doors and carrying it out to the home’s porch.

Samantha, who will be a junior at Oregon High School this school year, also lost all of her show blankets for her sheep and goats. Her softball glove was in the back of her grandfather’s truck

that was reduced to a burned out shell in the garage.

The Kopers’ 4-H animals were not injured in the blaze.

“Dad just when down to Sterling to get her some new clippers for the upcoming fair,” said Tanya, her mom, and Al’s daughter. “We found her clippers, but they were in a lot of water.”

The family has been staying at a friend’s home on Oregon Trail Road so they can still tend to their animals.

The family was outside working in the yard and discovered the fire in the garage around 4:30 p.m. and called 911.

Mt. Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

“The exact cause is still undetermined, but does appear to accidental in nature,” he said July 19. “The most probable area of origin was inside the garage on the east side.”

The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshall is assisting with the investigation.

Hough said the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived within minutes after it was reported.

Fire crews remained on the scene until almost 10 p.m.

Besides battling the blaze, firefighters also dealt with the temperature that approached 90 degrees and high humidity.

Extra fire crews were called in just before 6 p.m. to relieve those on the scene.

Fire departments who assisted Mt. Morris at the scene included Oregon, Polo, Leaf River, Byron, Stillman Valley, Dixon Rural, and Rochelle.

Forreston & German Valley Fire covered the Mt. Morris Firehouse and handled other calls for the Mt. Morris Fire Department.

The Oregon United Methodist Church held a fundraiser last week to help the Koper family and a Facebook fundraiser has been set up.

Last year Exelon’s tax bill for Byron Station totaled more than $37.8 million, with $21.2 million of that going to the school district.

Exelon’s taxes also go to Rockvale Township, Oregon School District, Oregon Park District, Byron Fire District, Rock Valley College, Byron Public Library District, Byron Museum District, Byron Forest Preserve District, and Kishwaukee Community College.

The deadline to apply for the seat on the BOR is Friday, Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. at the Ogle County Clerk’s office on the first floor of the courthouse, 105 S. Fifth St., Oregon.

The addition of a community service officer to the Oregon Police Department last month is already making a difference.

Police Chief Darin DeHaan said having Shane Mowry working on ordinance violations and parking compliance has freed up full-time officers to provide other services to the community, and has made a dent in the list of complaints the department typically receives.

Mowry, 20, of Oregon, was hired as CSO in June and works 20 hours per week on ordinance violations such overgrown grass, unlicensed vehicles parked in yards, and otherwise unkempt properties.

“Shane has done a fantastic job with making contact with residents, identifying the problems, and following up,” DeHaan said.

Mowry is also making sure the two-hour parking restrictions in the downtown are followed.

Before writing any parking tickets, he met with downtown business owners to let them know the

ordinance would be enforced.

“Almost immediately he got an email from one of the business owners saying thank you,” DeHaan said.

The summer job gives Mowry some valuable experience as he prepares for a career as a police officer.

“I’m going to college for criminal justice, and I thought would be a good stepping stone,” he said.

Mowry answers calls from residents who see violations in their neighborhoods and also notes violations while he’s on duty.

He said he is enjoying his work.

“It’s really good after getting a call to go through the steps and see that it makes a difference,” he said.

DeHaan said the CSO position was created just for the summer months, but he hopes it can be expanded to year-round.

The truck Mowry is driving is one the city Water Department no longer needed. A little striping was all it took to outfit it for the CSO. Mowry’s wages are paid from the city’s Health & Safety Fund, which was formerly used for animal control, before those duties were taken over by the county.

“There’s little or no impact on tax dollars,” DeHaan said.

Peter Hastings was born in a stone farmhouse Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Peter Hastings left his footprint in Oregon, in a Frank Lloyd Wrightstyle house built in 1907 at 600 N. Fourth St. The price of this house was $11,475 with construction starting July 15, and the contract stipulated it must be finished by Dec. 1.

The following article appeared in the Jan. 2, 1908 Ogle County Republican newspaper.

“Handsome new Residence Recently Completed in This City by P. E. Hastings. The above cut gives a very excellent general idea of the fine new home erected during the past season by Peter E. Hastings of this city.

“The side, on the river bank is commanding and the home is artistic in effect and modern in every detail.

“One excellent feature in the construction of this residence is the fact that every dollar spent in its erection was paid to home workmen.

“The plans were made by architect Frank A. Carpenter of Rockford and the symmetrical appearance upon the exterior as well as the modern, up-to-date completeness of the interior will long stand a monument to his skill.”

“The building contract was awarded to J. C. Mattison of this city, who has pushed the work rapidly to the satisfaction of the owner.

“The plumbing, very complete in every detail was done by Bellis & Gale, the electric wiring and other equipment by W. L. Taylor & Son and the painting by Charles Wilson, all of which is perfectly toward making an ideal home for our esteemed citizens, Mr. and Mrs. Hastings and family.”

The following are from Peter Hastings memories of his early life.

“My parents Edmund and Maryann Sheaff Hastings came to Illinois from Springfield, Ohio in 1850. (14 years after Oregon was founded.)

“My parents located in Rockvale township on the east side of Rock River, two miles south of Byron.

“Their home was a log cabin until the sand stone home was completed, in which I was born July 30, 1851.

My father died there, March, 1852.

“When I was five years old my mother, Edith Bird Hastings, mar-

“During these years the water in Rock River was crystal clear. Swimming was part of our past time in the summer.

“When I was 14 I lived with my Aunt Martha Sheaff who lived in Rockford. I had never been further than Dixon, 16 miles away.

“My trip to Rockford was by stage which carried the mail. Oregon had no railroad at that time. I went to school in Rockford at that time.”

“Later I stayed with my brother John on the farm.

“At this time corn was planted by hand. Boys dropped the corn and the

men covered it.

“During this time I worked on the farm in the summer and went to school in the winter.

“Later, I went to the Seminary at Mt. Morris. In the late summer of 1871, I went to Chicago to commercial school.

“This was my first ride on a train.

I still remember the posters in the Chicago station. (Look out for pick pockets).

“Our boarding house burned in the great Chicago Fire.”

Peter Hastings at age 87 died in his home at 800 N. Fourth St. on April 13, 1939.

He was a merchant in Rochelle, Holcomb, and Oregon before enter-

ing the banking business.

He organized the Ogle County Bank in Oregon in 1884 and served as president after it was incorporated in 1907, the same year he built his house.

He was also an alderman and served on the board of education in Oregon.

When I drive by Hastings’ footprint house today I remember this home was designed by architect Frank Carpenter, of Rockford. It resembles a Frank Lloyd Wright house style.

Also Peter Hastings lived a remarkable life. Born in Rockvale Township in a stone house, he moved to Oregon, Rockford, then on his brother’s farm, Chicago, Rochelle, Holcomb and finally back to Oregon.

His father died when he was two years old. He worked on a farm while attending school in Oregon and later was President of the Ogle County Bank.

Nicholas Meives-Wylie earns Eagle Scout Award

Nicholas Meives-Wylie

Nicholas Meives-Wylie, of Oregon, was honored by Boy Scout Troop 52 at an Eagle Court of Honor Ceremony on July 15 at the First Presbyterian Church of Oregon.

Nick completed the requirements for the rank of Eagle Scout and passed a board of review on June 11.

Nick started his Scouting career with Cub Scout Pack 81 in Oregon and graduated to Boy Scout Troop 52 on March 1, 2015.

As a Boy Scout he attended summer camps at Camp Lowden near Oregon for five years where he earned many of his merit badges.

He earned the following 21 merit badges to become an Eagle Scout: camping, citizenship in the community, citizenship in the nation, citizenship in the world, communications, cooking, lifesaving, environmental science, first aid, swimming, personal management, personal fitness, family life, fingerprinting, Indian Lore, salesmanship, railroading, animal science, leatherwork, weather, and game design.

To date he has earned a total of 36 merit badges and received a bronze palm, a gold palm, and a silver palm for the additional 15 badges beyond

those required for the Eagle Rank.

Nick’s Eagle project involved organizing members of his troop and friends to improve the outside appearance of the historic Chana School Museum in Oregon, during the spring of 2019.

This took 115 hours of work doing pressure washing of the brick walkway, cleaning out the planting areas, and spreading 10 yards of new mulch.

Nick has traveled with Troop 52 on four week-long summer trips for bicycling, camping, canoeing, fishing, and white water rafting.

He attended a six-day Junior Leader Training- NYLT, and many campouts in tents, cabins, and caves.

He is a member of the Order of the Arrow, an honor camper society of the Boy Scouts of America.

His leadership skills have been demonstrated in the positions of scribe, quartermaster, and assistant senior patrol leader.

He has participated in cross country and track at Oregon High School.

Boy Scout Troop 52 is sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church of Oregon.

Shindig to perform Aug. 2 Mt. Morris Jamboree

The Mt. Morris Jamboree will welcome back the 60s tribute band Shindig on Friday, Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

“Shindig presents a tribute to the 60s and always delivers a trip back to the greatest and most diverse decade of rock and roll music,” said event organizer Larry Ubben. “Covering over 90 different bands from that period of time where music told the story of an entire generation - early 60s, British Invasion, Psychedelic, pop, girl groups, Woodstock...are all part of the show.”

Tom Rychter and Tom Benson play guitars and sing, John Murphy plays bass, Sharman Strode sings, and Mark Lega plays drums and sings.

“Everyone fortunate to see their performance here last year will readily attest to the excitement this band brings to the stage,” Ubben said.

PEO Chapter CU will serve meatball sandwiches, hot dogs, cole slaw, chips, cold drinks, and cookies starting at 6 p.m. Special “meal deals” will be offered.

Park District offers day trip to see Steel Magnolias The Oregon Park District is offering a day trip out to Mt. Carroll to visit

Workers and runners busy at county fairgrounds

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com The Race for the Crown 4K wasn’t the only action at the Ogle County Fairgrounds on Saturday.

As 15 runners ran the inaugural race around the fairgrounds in 90-degree temperatures and suffocating humidity, a handful of other dedicated volunteers were busy working on machinery, readying the exhibit building, and moving items in preparation for next week’s

fair.

The 4K, organized by Mongan, Jean Mongan, the mother of 2018 Ogle County Fair Queen Grace Mongan, also participated in the race.

“We didn’t have a bad turnout considering it was the race’s first year,” said Mongan. “We’re going to try and make the 4K an annual event. I’m not sure it will be at the same time of the year as this one, but we’d like to continue it.”

The race was also a fundraiser

with half of the proceeds going to the Ogle County Fair and the other half to 4-H programs.

Tim Halsmer, of Byron, was the first runner to cross the line.

“It was fun. I hope they keep doing it,” he said.

Runners coming in first in their divisions each received a sparkling tiara.

“I gave that to my wife, Chris,” said Halsmer laughing.

Meanwhile, across the fairgrounds

Chris Snyder was busy putting the finishing touches on a large 4-H wall display in the exhibit building.

“It’s about the ribbon and it’s about the champions of 4-H,” she said. “Every year I come out and decorate the building to help showcase the amazing work our kids do when they show their projects.”

Also working on the exhibit building, were Jeannette Mingus and her husband, Harlan Holm, and Denny Alderks.

VINTAGE BASE BALL

The Oregon Ganymedes Vintage Base Ball Club will play their final home game of the 2019 season on Sunday, July 28 at 1 p.m. at the Chana School Museum lawn located at Oregon Park East, 201 North River Road in Oregon.

The hometown Ganymedes will play the Chicago Salmon Base Ball Club in a nine inning match featuring the 1858 rules of the game of base ball. Admission is free.

“Spectators should bring their own lawn chairs and blankets to sit under the shade trees of Iron Chest Field to enjoy an afternoon of historic base ball and see how America’s Pastime was meant to be

played,” said Mark Herman, manager.

The Oregon Ganymedes Base Ball Club is celebrating their 15th year of playing vintage rules base ball.

The Ganymedes are a volunteer outreach program of the Chana School Museum and play other vintage clubs from all over the Midwest by the early rules of base ball.

hen a self-proclaimed city girl – and the state’s lieutenant governor – wanted to learn more about Illinois’ leading industry, she sought out experts in the field.

And some of those fields were in Whiteside County.

During a recent visit to the county, Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton found herself behind the wheel of a John Deere tractor, part of her goal learning about agriculture through first-hand experiences with farmers and other members of the ag community.

Stratton made several stops in Whiteside County on April 29 as part of her “Lieutenant Governor on the Move” series.

“The best way for this city girl to learn about Illinois agriculture is to spend time with the experts: Illinois farmers,” she said.

Her visit included Rock River Lumber and Grain Co. in Sterling as well as Sandrock Farms and Sauk Valley Angus near Rock Falls. Stratton learned the interworkings behind shipping grain and its reach on a global scale.

Biographies: a good way to read to learn

Online school registration has begun; deadline to sign up is Aug. 2

There are two categories we consider when talking about the purposes for reading.

One is reading for enjoyment and entertainment. The other is reading to learn.

We’ll explore reading to learn for the next few columns.

In today’s classrooms there is a greater emphasis on reading nonfiction or informational text.

Part of the reason is that most of the real-world reading we all do on a daily basis falls into this category.

It is also generally considered to be more difficult to read because it is usually packed with information, details, and technical vocabulary.

For these reasons we want to be sure our children and grandchildren have experiences with all kinds of informational text.

Biographies and autobiographies fall into the informational text category.

I distinctly remember discovering the biography aisle in the Ida Public Library in Belvidere when I was in fourth grade. I’m quite

I’m also pretty sure they weren’t such high quality and maybe not reliably accurate, but they somehow appealed to me at that time.

Today’s selection of biographies for all ages is high quality, well-researched, and covers people from all walks of life.

The illustrations are photographs or beautiful and appealing paintings and drawings.

No matter your child’s interests, you are sure to find biographies of key people related to that interest.

It might be fun to look through the biographies in the children’s section of your public library or a favorite book store with your grandchildren or children.

You will find well-known people from many fields including presidents, politicians, athletes

from all sports, inventors, medical professionals, discoverers, artists, authors, and musicians.

There are women and men from many nationalities and countries.

One popular newer series is the Who Is? Who Was? books.

They are around 100 page paperbacks with ninety-some titles and are readily available at bookstores and perhaps libraries as well.

Sometimes you might find a biography of someone whose career took a negative turn.

This allows you to have a conversation about that and gives your children an opportunity to be critical readers.

Does this book fairly present the person? Does it talk at all about the person’s problems? Why do you think it does or doesn’t?

If you’re interested in reading to learn and are interested in learning about the lives of famous people, biographies are for you!

Make it a goal to read at least one this summer.

John Deere Historic Site to host Green Iron Days Dozens of vintage John Deere two-cylinder tractors will be on display for public viewing during the 2019 Green Iron Days at the John Deere Historic Site, Aug. 2-4.

During the three-day gathering, guests to the Historic Site in Grand Detour, will enjoy seeing rare and restored John Deere machines, as well as some related brands.

Visitors will also have an opportunity to talk with owners about the unique collection and restoration stories behind them.

On Saturday at 7 p.m., the collectors registered for the event will have the opportunity to parade their tractors through the streets of Grand Detour. “We host this event every two years and we are excited to welcome back regional collectors as they always make for a fun and entertaining weekend,� said Kristen Veto, manager of the John Deere Historic Site. “Their passion, hard work and enthusiasm for collecting attracts many visitors to this region to admire their two-cylinder machines. We are proud to provide a setting that pulls it all together, allowing guests to learn more about the legacy of John Deere products as well as John Deere the man.

In addition to seeing a collection of vintage tractors, visitors to the John Deere Historic Site also have the opportunity to tour John Deere’s home and an archaeological dig of his original blacksmith shop.

Virus is detected in pools near Rochelle, Monroe Center The Ogle County Health Department recently confirmed two more mosquito pools positive for West Nile virus.

A pool of mosquitoes found near Rochelle and another separate mosquito pool collected in Monroe Center tested positive for WNV on July 16.

A previously confirmed positive mosquito pool was found near Polo in June.

With three separate mosquito pools from three different locations throughout the county being confirmed as positive, it is imperative to be alert and take protective measures against WNV. Health department personnel will continue surveillance and testing mosquito pools from across the

county, as well as conducting mosquito abatement and working with local municipalities on mosquito abatement methods such as applying larvicide.

Monitoring for WNV in Illinois includes laboratory tests for mosquito batches, dead crows, blue jays, robins and other perching birds, as well as testing humans with WNVlike symptoms.

People who observe a sick or dying crow, blue jay, robin or other perching bird should contact their local health department, which will determine if the bird will be picked up for testing.

WNV is transmitted through the bite of a culex mosquito, commonly called a house mosquito, which has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Common symptoms include fever,

nausea, headache, and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks.

However, four out of five people infected with WNV will not show any symptoms.

In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur.

People older than 50 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness.

Precautions include practicing the three “R’s” – reduce, repel, and report.

Reduce - make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens.

Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut.

Eliminate, or refresh each week, all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including

water in bird baths, ponds, flowerpots, wading pools, old tires, and any other containers.

Repel - when outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a longsleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535 according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants.

Report – report locations where you see water sitting stagnant for more than a week such as roadside ditches, flooded yards, and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes.

The local health department or municipal government may be able to add larvicide to the water, which will kill any mosquito eggs.

To learn more about WNV and other mosquito-borne diseases and prevention methods, consult the Illinois Department of Public Health website or contact the IDPH WNV hotline at 866-369-9710 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

4-H Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction is set for Aug. 3 The Annual 4-H Blue Ribbon Livestock Auction will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3 at the Ogle County Fair at the fairgrounds west of Oregon.

The 4-H Auction Committee invites the public to support 4-H project work by bidding on a quality 4-H animal.

The auction will start at 3 p.m. in the Swine Barn. It will feature 4-H market hogs, lambs, beef animals,

goats, poultry, and rabbits as well as the champion and reserve champion beef, swine, lamb, and goat carcasses.

Live animals may be purchased and sent to a locker or may be bought and resold at a slaughterhouse.

Slaughterhouse buyers will be attending. Transportation to processing plants will be provided.

A floor price will be set according

to the current market trends the day of the auction. A list of current market prices will be available.

Champion and Reserve Champion market animals will be sold first.

Pork and lamb carcasses will be sold whole. Beef carcasses will be sold in halves.

Waste Reduction & Recycling Grants.

The grants of up to $2,000 are available to Ogle County businesses, schools, churches and non-profit organizations wishing to establish or improve on waste reduction and recycling programs and services.

Since total grant funds remaining for this year are around $5,700, grants will be awarded on a competitive basis in amounts from $100 to $2,000.

Schools may seek funds for special projects that will further a student’s understanding of how to reduce the amount of trash sent to the landfill.

The requests may be for materials and equipment, such as recycling bins/carts, videos, books, worm (vermicomposting) bins, composters, or other waste reduction equipment.

Municipalities or haulers seeking to improve commercial, curbside, or multifamily recycling programs are encouraged to apply.

Grant applications for equipment and materials needed to improve electronics recycling options in Ogle County are also encouraged.

These examples are not all inclusive,

and applicants are encouraged to find innovative ways to reduce waste and increase what is recycled.

The grants may not be used to pay for ongoing expenses such as staffing, collection, and hauling costs. Priority will be given to new applicants.

All applications will be reviewed by the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department and the Ogle County Board Solid Waste Committee.

Grants will be evaluated based on the following criteria: management ability, project quality, project impact, realistic goals and expectations, accuracy of application, education potential, use of recycled content products when available, potential for waste stream diversion, and future continuity of project.

In 2017, Ogle County residents,

businesses, and other entities recycled approximately 31 percent of the municipal waste generated.

This recycling rate is due to the efforts of many individuals doing their part to reduce waste and recycle as much as possible at home, work and school.

The OCSWMD urges businesses and other organizations to strive to find new ways to increase what gets recycled in the County.

These grants can help make that possible.

Further, he was a member of the Pinecrest Manor Board during the time that a new building was constructed at Pinecrest.

Roger was a charitable donor, supporting many local charities.

Roger enjoyed photography and reading Westerns. He was an avid (if not skilled) golfer.

Roger did most of the work of building the family home where he resided until his passing.

Those of us who know and love Roger

will remember his special sense of humor, his strong moral character, and his devotion to his wife Carol.

Survivors include three sons, Kris, of Old Hickory, Tennessee, Mark, of Camarillo, California, and Philip, of Rockford; one daughter, Andria (Burchett), of Geneva; 11 grandchildren, David, of Hollywood, California, Erik, of Nashville, Tennessee, Rudy, of Camarillo, California, Andrew, of Newport News, Virginia, Valerie, of Camarillo, California, Alison, of Davis, California, Drew, of Wheaton, Hillary, of Chicago, Becci, of Chicago, Taylor, of Dublin, Ohio, and Mackenzie, of Noblesville, Indiana; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Friday, July 26 at noon at the Disciples United Methodist Church in Mt. Morris.

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until noon at the church.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

July 16 Jessica E. Myers, 30, of Polo, was arrested for disorderly conduct on July 17 at 10:47 a.m. in the 100 block of East Mason Street in Polo after a incident that occurred the evening before.

Deputies had responded on July 16 at 9:09 p.m. to a disturbance at 15184 W. Illinois 72, but while they were en route, Myers, the offender, left the area.

She was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Deputies responded at 7 a.m. to a one-vehicle roll-over crash in the 6,400 block of South Illinois 2.

A northbound car being driven by Tahwnee Spencer, 27, of Rock Falls, had a mechanical failure in its steering. The vehicle rolled over and came to rest in the roadway.

Spencer was transported to KSB Hospital, Dixon, for minor injuries suffered in the crash.

July 17 Deputies conducted an investigation at 9:35 a.m. at a residence in Davis Junction.

The suspect of the investigation, Jemma J. Atterbury, 32, of Davis Junction, fled from the scene in a vehicle to avoid arrest.

Deputies pursued Atterbury for approximately two miles before she stopped her vehicle. She was arrested for aggravated fleeing to elude a peace officer, reckless driving, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and several traffic violations.

Atterbury was held at the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Jose Claudio-Ocampo, 39, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop at 6:21 p.m. near the intersection of Pecatonica and Montague Roads. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

July 18 Megan Tracy, 37, of Davis Junction, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop at 3:27 a.m. at the intersection of Walnut and Main Streets in Stillman Valley.

She was also issued a citation for an inoperable rear registration light. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Jesse Russell, 23, of Rock Falls was

arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 10:39 p.m. in the 6,000 block of West Oregon Trail Road. He was also cited for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transported to the Ogle County jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

July 19 Jerry L. Coffee Jr., 36, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop for a registration violation at 2:50 p.m. in the 10,000 block of North Illinois 2. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

July 20 Alejandro Toledo, 27, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving on an expired drivers license, more than one year, after a traffic stop for a registration violation at 10:30 a.m. in the 8,000 block East Flagg Road.

July 21 Shawn Skinner, 24, of Sterling, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a two-vehicle crash without injuries at 1:54 a.m. in the 7,000 block of N. Illinois 251.

Skinner was also issued citations for

failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

July 22 Lacy E. Debrower, 35, of Altoona, Iowa, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop for a registration violation at 4:14 p.m. in the 5,800 block of South Illinois 2. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Alvaro Mireles, 56, of Rochelle was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia. He posted $3,000 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 16.

July 23 Brody Stone, 19, of Oregon, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and consumption of alcohol as a minor after a traffic stop at 2 a.m. at the intersection of West Illinois 64 and Everett Street in Mt. Morris. Stone was also issued citations for an inoperable rear registration light and improper display of registration. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

July 13 Police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at 2:24 p.m. in the parking lot of the Shell gas station, located at 201 S. 4th Street, involving a 2007 Chevrolet driven by Cassandra E. Smith, 40, Oregon, and a 2010 Ford driven by Ashley D. Daugherty, 28, Polo. No citations were issued.

July 15 Melissa M. Lancaster, 37, Shannon, was issued a citation at 10:05 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred at the intersection of W. Washington and Monroe Streets.

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Captain Matthew Hodgdon, has announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for June.

The district encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside Counties.

Troopers issued 402 citations, 541 written warnings, and made 10 criminal arrests.

Speeding accounted for 210 citations, 50 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, seven citations were issued for distracted driving violations and 12 citations for move over violations were issued.

Troopers investigated 22 traffic crashes, assisted 91 motorists, and conducted 165 commercial vehicle inspections, 15 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. Seven people were arrested for driving under the influence.

District 1 had no traffic crash fatalities
