Rockin’ River Fest throws in the towel Three years of bad weather and limited attendance are blamed

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Three years of unfavorable weather has led Oregon’s Rockin’ River Fest Leadership Team to discontinue the three-year-old festival.

“After three years of bad weather and limited attendance, we have made a difficult decision to discontinue Rockin’ River Fest as it currently exists,” said Donna Mann, leadership team member and president of the Oregon Chamber of Commerce Board. “We are actively exploring new options for hosting some mini events like the Tug Across the Rock and other part of the festival that were well-received.”

Mann made the announcement at the Oregon City Council meeting on June 25 and also on the chamber’s website last week.

The festival, held on the third Saturday in June, was plagued with a downpour and wind in 2017 the first year, excessively hot and steamy conditions last year, and heavy rain again this year.

An estimated 750 people attended this year and about a 1,000 last year. Numbers were not available for the first year.

Highlights were the Tug Across the Rock, where teams of tuggers competed from the east and west sides of the Rock River, pulling a rope stretching across it just below the dam, and the Adventure Triathlon, a rigorous run, bike ride, and kayak paddle down the river.

The majority of the activities took place on the banks of the Rock River, on north Second Street between Franklin and Washington Streets.

“We will keep you posted on our progress as new plans evolve. Thanks again to each and every one who supported this event in any way, “ Mann said.

Former VFW commander accused of embezzlement

Rusty Barnes, 47, of Davis Junction, is facing seven counts of felony theft for incidents that occurred from June 20, 2016 to Jan. 18, 2017 while he was the commander of the post.

BRIEFS Two arrested for DUI after single vehicle crash Two Byron residents were both arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol June 30 after a single vehicle crash.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said Michael Peterson, 51, was charged with DUI after deputies found the vehicle he was driving in a ditch at the intersection of East Illinois 72 and Marrill Road at 12:18 a.m.

Dena Peterson, 49, arrived at the scene driving another vehicle and was also charged with DUI. Michael was also issued citations

for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Dena was also issued a citation for unlawful parking.

Both were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.

Two Rockford men die in crash Two Rockford men were killed Monday in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 39 a mile north of Illinois 72.

Moo Ler, 50, and Leonardo Lozano, 51, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at milepost 112.

Illinois State Police said Ler was

northbound on I-39 when the car he was driving went out of control and crossed through the center median into the southbound lanes where it was struck by a semi tractor-trailer driven

by Kenneth B. Miller, 51, of Owensboro, Kentucky.

Lozano was a passenger in Ler’s car.

Miller was uninjured.

The crash occurred at 2:38 p.m., and traffic on I-39 was re-routed for about four hours.

VINTAGE BASE BALL

Ganymedes win two games The Oregon Ganymedes Base Ball Club won both games of a double-header on June 29 despite some interference from Mother Nature.

The vintage base ball team started the afternoon defeating the Creston Regulators by a score of 6-0. The game was stopped after one full inning of play with Oregon leading 1-0 as the heavens opened up with heavy rain, wind and lightning that sent players and fans running for cover.

“Following a 50 minute rain delay (where we received 2 inches of rain) the clubs came back out and finished the match as our Iron Chest Field is pure sand and drains quickly,” said manager Mark Herman.

The Creston Regulators then played the McLean County Prairie

Chickens BBC of Bloomington and defeated them by a score of 11-4.

In the final match of the day Oregon defeated McLean County 8-2.

Vintage base ball is patterned after the game played during the Civil War in 1864. The game is played without gloves and a ball caught on one bounce is an out.

The Ganymedes’ next games will be on Sunday, July 14 at Cantigny Park in Wheaton.

The team returns home on Sunday, July 28 at 1 p.m. hosting Chicago Salmon.

On Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 -11 the team will play at the World Tournament of Historic Base Ball versus 11 other Vintage Base Ball Clubs from Indiana, Ohio, Michigan and beyond at The Henry Ford Museum Greenfield Village, Dearborn, Michigan.

Violations for speeding 1 to 20 mph over the limit used to cost drivers $120 if they didn’t fight it in court or ask for supervision. The cost jumped to $140 if the speeding was 21 to 25 mph.

Once the new law went into effect, both now cost $164. The cost goes up to a minimum of $251 for those challenging a ticket in court or asking for supervision.

Tickets for using an electronic communication device while driving also now costs $164, increasing the fine by $44, and are now considered moving violations.

Illinois drivers took a hit in the pocketbook Monday when state fines, fees, and taxes increased.

Thanks to the state’s new $45 billion capital infrastructure plan, motor fuel tax increased by 19 cents per gallon on July 1. The increase is supposed to help fund $33 billion on transportation projects such as road and bridge repairs and public transit.

The motor fuel tax on regular gasoline and diesel fuel both increase to 38 cents, up from 19 cents In addition, those who buy diesel fuel pay an additional tax, “for the privilege of operating motor vehicles which use diesel fuel.”

That additional fee rose to 7.5 cents, up from 2.5 cents, bringing the total tax on diesel fuel to 45.5 cents per gallon.

Going forward, the motor fuel tax will increase annually by the consumer price index, which is usually close to two percent, but would be capped at a one cent per-year increase.

New legislation also mandated that a minor traffic ticket will result in a $164 fine.

A minor traffic offense is any moving violation that doesn’t require a driver to appear in court.

It can be anything from not using a seat belt to speeding, 19 mph over the speed limit.

Drivers issued three or more texting while driving tickets within a year could also face a suspended license.

That means no GPS, no texting or thumbing through emails, even if the driver is using a phone at a stop sign or red light.

The only time it won’t be a violation is if the driver is using the device while parked on a shoulder or while calling for emergency services.

Seat belt violations, now a $55 fine, have also increased to $164.

The biggest cost jumps are for violations for no insurance and Scott’s Law tickets.

Driving without insurance previously landed drivers a minimum $300 ticket, but that’s more than doubled to $625, and Scott’s Law violations have a similar increase to at least $500.

Topping it off, vehicle title fees also increased on July 1.

According to a press release from Secretary of State Jesse White, a certificate of title for most vehicles went from $95 to $150. Increases for motor homes, mini motor homes, and van campers increased from $95 to $250.

Salvage titles increased from $4 to $20 and junk titles from no charge to $10, while duplicate or corrected titles actually decreased from $95 to $50.

“Additional changes impacting vehicle registration fees will take effect Jan. 1, 2020,” White’s press release read.

That includes vehicle license stickers which are expected to increase $50 per year.

Taft’s artistic footprints lay across Oregon area Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK We are familiar with Lorado Taft’s footprints in the Oregon area. Visitors are drawn from all over to enjoy his statues.

Wikipedia list 29 Taft sculptures located in Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Michigan, Washington, his home town Chicago and Oregon, Illinois, his summer retreat.

His Oregon statues are The Eternal Indian (1911), Soldier’s Monument (1911), and Two Boys with Dolphins (1920).

Lorado Taft was born in Elmwood, Illinois.

His father was a professor of geology at the University of Illinois.

He was home-schooled and earned his bachelor’s degree (1879) and master’s degree (1880) at the University of Illinois.

After his master’s degree he left for Paris to study sculpture. He moved back to the Chicago area in 1886 and taught at the Art Institute of Chicago until 1929.

In 1898 Taft and 10 other members founded the Eagle’s Nest Artist Colony on the bluff overlooking the Rock River northeast of Oregon. He made this his summer home for 13 years.

One year after the Artist Colony was founded on April 19, 1899, his daughter Emily was born in Chicago.

Emily attended the University of Chicago majoring in French.

She joined the Democratic Party because of Woodrow Wilson’s backing of the League of Nations.

She also sought a ban on nuclear weapons.

Emily served as a U.S. Representative from 1945 to 1947. She was the first female Democrat elected to Congress from Illinois.

Taft was given credit for helping introduce women to the world of sculpture and for helping to advance the status of women sculptors.

In 1892 when Chicago was preparing for the World’s Columbian Exposition he was instructed ”to hire anyone, even white rabbits if they’ll do the work.”

From that comment, a group of talented women evolved called the “White Rabbits Sculptors.”

The following is from a lecture given by Taft entitled Beauty in the Home Town.

“I saw up in the courthouse a list of 3,500 names, stenciled on the wall of a little memorial room. It was most impressive to think that there were so many individual men in the county way back in the days of the Civil War who were willing to sacrifice themselves for their country.

“It was an impressive monument but let us put

I contributed a year’s work and we have exedra and all the names on bronze tablets and a great figure of America crowning them and a soldier at either end guarding the roll of honor. And with this Oregon seemed well-pleased as it had with Blackhawk.”

He continued saying, “I picked up an automobile ‘Blue Book.’ Oregon, Illinois, has 2,300 habitants. Points of interest, first, Artists Camp on the hill; second, the Blackhawk Monument; third, the Soldier Monument downtown; and Governor Lowden’s farm. I was simply immeasurably

grateful that it had been my privilege to do something that the little community showed interest in itself.”

Now when I see Lorado Taft’s footprints in our community I realize besides being an American sculptor, he was an educator and one of the 11 members who founded the Artist Colony.

His father was a professor and his daughter served in the U.S. Congress and attended the University of Chicago.

So Taft being famous for his sculptures, along with his father and daughter, were well-founded in the world of academics.

YOUTH SPORTS Oregon High School Football coaches and players will host a youth football camp July 8-11 at the Oregon High School football practice fields, located south of the Blackhawk Center in Oregon.

“Your camp fee will directly support the athletes of the Oregon Hawks Football Program for various needs,” said coach Nick Schneiderman. “Your youth camper will receive a t-shirt of their size.

Any camper fifth grade and younger will

also receive a youth sized Oregon Hawks Football.

“The youth football camp will be designed to teach our future hawks in football fundamentals (offense, defense, and special teams),” he said. “This is a non-padded camp with an emphasis in teaching all positions. Your camper will be taught fundamentals as a lineman, running back, quarterback, and receiver on offense. On defense they will be taught as a lineman, linebacker, and

defensive back. Special team segments will be practiced each day included will be kicking, punting, long snapping and receiving a kick.

Kindergarten – 2nd grade camp is 8:30 – 9:30a.m. and 3rd grade – 5th grade camp is 9:45 – 11 a.m.

In case of poor weather, the Blackhawk Center will be reserved for the youth camp.

Check-In/ Registration starts at 8 a.m. on July 8 located on the westside of the Blackhawk Center. The deadline for registration is July 1.

The Jodi Beach Quartet will make its debut at the Mt. Morris Jamboree on Friday, July 12 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell on the downtown campus.

“Jodi has performed on our band shell stage as a featured soloist with the Kable Concert Band in the recent past, but this will be the first time she performs with her band for a free, two hour show,” said event organizer Larry Ubben.

Beach is more than a singer and pianist. She is a storyteller, a theme-weaver, a scrapbook of lives presented in song, he said.

“Her performances invite the audience on a sentimental journey of melodies and lyrics that will leave them smiling and bring a tear to their eyes,” Ubben said. “If you ask her mother when Jodi first began to sing, she will look at you with a very sincere face and ask, ‘When hasn’t she?’”

Truly from birth Beach has been warming people’s hearts with pure and beautiful vocal tones, Ubben said.

At the age of five she started piano lessons and could read sheet music

before she could read English.

She continued her musical studies at Judson University and Northern Illinois University, and went on to form the award-winning Jodi Beach Trio, with whom she has recorded six albums and toured throughout the country.

The Let Freedom Ring Committee will serve hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, chips, drinks, and desserts starting at 6 p.m. with all proceeds going to next year’s event.

The Oregon Park District’s Reading Nook playground was officially opened on June 25.

“This property was made possible as a result of many individuals,” said Erin Folk, executive director of the Oregon Park District. “First, the donation of the property by the Ingraham family. Without their generosity, this opportunity would not have existed. Second, a thank you to the board and staff for supporting the concept and allowing the district to create a space unlike any other in

the Oregon community.

“Last, but not least, a thank you to the Oregon Park District Parks Department. The district is very fortunate to have a talented group of individuals who have the ability to construct large and small park amenities which benefit our community in so many ways,” Folk said.

The Reading Nook is located at the corner of Madison Street and South Sixth Street, across the street from Nash Recreation Center.

June 19 Winter B. Luster, 25, of Dixon, was arrested at 3:43 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Luster was also issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Luster was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 500 block of N. Illinois 2.

June 20 At 11 a.m., police investigated a hit and run that had just occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street where an unknown vehicle struck a 2013 Toyota driven by Marsha K. Butterfield, 70, of Dixon, causing her vehicle to strike a 2004 Chevrolet driven by Dana R. Meyers, 43, of Chana. The vehicle then left the scene. No citations were issued.

June 25 Adrian K. Clark, 32, of Oregon, was arrested at 1:20 p.m. for unlawful possession of a debit card. Clark was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

June 26 At 3:05 a.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 100 block of N. 5th Street, resulting in the arrest of Dustin N. Garcia, 29, of Oregon, for disorderly conduct. Garcia was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Laura R. Webster, 31, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 10:30 a.m. for violating the trash/rubbish/junk ordinance in the 400 block of Mix Lane.

At 12:48 p.m., police investigated a car vs. train traffic crash in the 1200 block of S. 2nd Street where a 2000 Dodge driven by Jimmy L. Sawyer, 58, Oregon, struck a moving train. No citations were issued.

Adrian K. Clark,32, of Oregon, was charged at approximately 1 p.m. for failure to register as a sex offender. Clark was already housed at the Ogle County Jail on charges from June 25.

At 6 p.m., police investigated a car vs. utility pole traffic crash in the 400 block of Madison Street involving a 2000 Dodge driven by Amy Benton, 35, of Oregon, who struck a utility pole. Benton was issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

June 27 Michael P. Fenton, 53, of Loves Park, was issued a city citation at 12:05 p.m. for violating the inoperable motor vehicle ordinance in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

June 29 At 5:25 p.m., police responded to a disturbance occurring in the parking lot in the 100 block of S. 5th Street, resulting in taking one 16-year-old male juvenile, Polo, into limited custody for the

offense of domestic battery. The juvenile was released into his parent’s custody with a juvenile delinquency petition requested to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office.

At 9:12 p.m., police investigated a car vs deer traffic crash in the 700 block of North 4th Street involving a 2018 Chevrolet driven by Maylene M. Haug, 30, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

June 30 Amanda J. Wolfe, 40, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 4:40 a.m. for disobeying a traffic control light. This violation occurred at the 4th and Washington Street intersection.

Heat, humidity fail to deter KB Tough Runners Ninety-one runners took part in the 2019 KB Tough Run on June 29 at the White Pines Ranch, west of Oregon.

Runners battled hilly terrain, hot temperatures, and high humidity to raise money for area residents facing medical challenges and rising costs.

Carson Andrew won the 5K in 18 minutes and 41 seconds.

The KB Tough Run is the major fundraising event for the KB Fund that was established to help those in the community who are burdened by a medical crisis.

More than 70 families have been helped by the KB Fund since its formation. Their needs have ranged from expenses related to cancer treatments, chronic illness, accident recovery, special needs therapy, premature births and more.

The KB Tough Run was initially started in 2012 by April Roos, a young Oregon woman who was diagnosed with cancer.

April died June 6, 2018 at age 37, just a few weeks shy of the fundraiser she spearheaded.

The event takes its name from a pep talk April’s dad, Gary French, also of Oregon, used to whip up team spirit for April’s youth softball team he coached, goading the girls during the huddle to “kick butt.”

After a parent raised some concerns over the catchphrase, the team shortened it to KB. Years later, when April went up against a tougher opponent than she ever faced on the field, she decided to take her dad’s advice and was determined to kick cancer’s butt.

April celebrated being cancer-free in 2013, but the disease returned. Then in 2015, the disease went into remission and there was no evidence of it during PET scans.

But then her roller coaster ride with cancer took a turn for the worse in 2017 when the disease returned and she started undergoing chemotherapy again.

Through it all, she was determined to pay it forward by helping raise money for the KB Fund.

Mosquito pool near Polo tests positive

Ogle County Health Department administrator Kyle Auman confirmed last week that the first positive mosquito pool for West Nile virus has been reported in the county this year.

“With this being the first positive sample, maintaining vigilance to prevent exposure is extremely important,” Auman said June 26.

Monitoring for West Nile virus in Illinois includes laboratory tests for mosquito batches, dead crows, blue

which has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.

Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches. Symptoms may last from a few days to a few weeks.

However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms.

In rare cases, severe illness including meningitis or encephalitis, or even death, can occur.

People older than 50 and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus.

Precautions include practicing the three “R’s” – reduce, repel, and report.

Make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. When outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535 according to label instructions.

June 25 Andrew P. Rucker, 19, of Leaf River, was arrested for driving on a suspended license after a traffic stop at 11:25 a.m. in the 200 block of South Walnut Avenue in Forreston. He was also cited for not wearing a seat belt.

Haldane Towing removed the vehicle from the location. Rucker was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Kevin Mon, no age given, of Mt. Carroll, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 9:28 p.m. in the 17,000 block of West Milledgeville Road.

Russell Warner, 53, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop for an equipment violation at 10:57 p.m. on I39 at mile marker 102.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

June 27 Ricardo Sanchez, 25, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked on Illinois 251 in Davis Junction after being stopped for speeding. He was held in lieu of bond at the Jail.

June 26 Kristina D. McNutt, 48, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop for an equipment violation at 1:49 a.m. in the 8,000 block of North Illinois 251. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Sieanna Mitchell, 62, of Sycamore, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at Illinois 64 and Woodlawn Road for not displaying a front license plate. Mitchell

June 28 Martin Chavez, 38, of DeKalb, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on a full cash bond of $2,366 pending a court appearance.

Jaime Carter, 38, of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for drug court sanctions. He was held in the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Dan Knaub, 31, of Leaf River, was arrested on two outstanding Ogle County warrants, one for failure to appear and the second for a petition to revoke probation. He posted the $350 full cash bond for the first and was released on $5,000 recognizance bond for the second. He is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 12.

Rusty Barnes, 47, of Davis Junction,

was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for theft. He was released on a $10,000 recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court July 31.

June 29 Nicholas W. Gillis, 41, of Big Rock, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop at 10:23 p.m. at Illinois 64 and Chana Road. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

June 30 Michael Peterson, 51, of Byron, and Dena Peterson, 49, of Byron, were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a single vehicle accident at 12:18 a.m. at the intersection of East Illinois 72 and Marrill Road.

Michael was also issued citations for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Dena was also issued a citation for unlawful parking.

Both were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.

Brandon Barber, 35, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while license

suspended after a traffic stop at 11:01 a.m. on Lost Nation Road just into Lee County. Barber was also issued citations for speeding and operating an uninsured vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

July 1 Deputies, along with the Monroe Center, Davis Junction, and Kirkland ambulances, responded at 6:30 p.m. to a two-vehicle crash at Mulford Road and Illinois 72.

A car driven by Tommie Roberts, 58, of Cortland, was southbound on Mulford Road and then failed to yield after stopping at the intersection with Illinois 72.

Roberts’ car was struck by a eastbound van driven by Rogelio Guerra, 37, of Belvidere.

Roberts was transported by ambulance to Kishwaukee Hospital, DeKalb, and Guerra was transported by ambulance to OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford.

The injuries to Roberts and Guerra appeared to be minor and not lifethreatening. Roberts was cited for failure to yield.

OBITUARIES H. HARLAN BAKER Memorial services for H. Harlan Baker, 96, of Mt. Morris, will be held on Saturday, July 13 at 11 a.m. at Disciples United Methodist Church, Mt. Morris.

Visitation will be held on July 13 from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Harlan died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris He was born on Dec. 12, 1922 in Pine Creek Township, the son of Harry H. and Bertha (Tholen) Baker.

NANCY K. DICKSON Nancy K. Dickson, 71, died peacefully at her home in Ankeny, Iowa.

Nancy was the first-born child of Robert Dickson and Esther (Hedrick) Dickson, who lived in Mt. Morris.

She married Mounder classmate Larry Wisnosky in 1971 and divorced over two decades later.

After she graduated from Mt. Morris High School in 1966, she went to Western Illinois University, Macomb, where she studied mathematics and German but graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy.

She also attended graduate school at the University of Illinois in Urbana and North Dakota State University in Fargo.

In graduate school, she studied the administration of higher and continuing

CLARA L. FOSTER Clara Lucille Ginger Foster, 85, of Forreston, died on Saturday June 29, 2019 at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport.

She was born on May 25, 1934 in East Peoria, the daughter of Joseph Andrew and Estella Marie (Berg) Ausmus.

She married David W. Ginger on Aug. 27, 1954 in Lee County. He died on October 13, 1996.

DONNA A. RUNTE Donna Arlene (Stamm) Runte, 87, of Forreston, died peacefully at her home on Friday, June 28, 2019.

She was born in Stephenson County on Oct. 11, 1931, the daughter of Milford and Elta (Lestikow) Stamm.

Donna graduated from Forreston High School.

Donna married Willard Runte on Sept.

15, 1952.

She worked many years at Burgess

He graduated from Mt. Morris High School Class of 1940 and he received his bachelor of science degree in Engineering from the University of Illinois in the Class of 1948.

Harlan married Marion Knodle on March 22, 1947 in Mt. Morris. She preceded him in death on Nov. 5, 2015.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in Europe.

Harlan worked as an engineer with the Marketing Department at Commonwealth Edison, retiring in 1981 after 35 years.

He lived his life in northern Illinois and Mt. Morris area.

Harlan was a member of the Mt. Morris Disciples United Methodist Church, Methodist Men’s Club, Methodist Board of Trustees, Kiwanis, National Woodcarver’s Association, Mt. Morris VFW Post 3639, Illinois State 4-H Committee, American Legion, Plainview Cemetery Board, Senior Citizens Board, Registered Professional Engineer State of Illinois, American Institute of Plant Engineers, and he taught at the Chicago Lighting Institute for six years.

Harlan is survived by his children, Robert (Maria) Baker, Cary, and Susan (Allen) Skaggs, Tampa, Florida; two grandchildren, Lina Marie, St. Paul, Minnesota, and Patrick Robert Baker, Woodstock; sister-in-law, Lila Baker, Mt. Morris.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marion; brothers, Francis and Sherwood Baker.

Burial was at Plainview Cemetery, Mt. Morris. Memorials to Disciples United Methodist Church or the Mt. Morris Senior Center.

Indeed, her passion for education spanned her whole life. Examples include rallying a Parent-Teacher Association in the 1980s to influence the naming of a new high school, to her nearly last communication in a family group chat reacting to a granddaughter’s enjoyment of a selective college-for-kids program, which was a beaming smile.

Nancy consistently sought joy and happiness in all things around her.

Whether a routine e-mail reminder at work, correcting one of her children’s mistakes, or even training a misbehaving pet, she always carried herself in a

fun and positive way.

She was particularly adept at making otherwise unpleasant situations pleasant or even fun.

As just one of countless examples, a few years after being diagnosed with the pulmonary disease which eventually claimed her, one day she swallowed her pride and used a motorized scooter at the grocery store.

Being her first time riding such a device she collided with isles and other store property numerous times.

Instead of being ashamed or risking more pulmonary stress by walking, she began referring to using motorized scooters as “taking the basher,” and developed a comical wave for all future collisions.

Her survivors include two children,

Elizabeth Wisnosky, of Iowa City, Iowa, and David Wisnosky, of College Park, Maryland; two grandchildren, Grace Wisnosky and Faye Wisnosky, of Iowa City; two siblings, Jan Franklin, of San Diego, California, and James Dickson, of Mt. Morris. She has several surviving cousins including Diane Swengle, of Mt. Morris.

Her parents and her youngest brother, Steven Dickson, preceded her in death.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 6 at 10 a.m. at the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren and will be followed by a Celebration of Life service at 11 a.m. at the church and burial at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Brain & Behavior Research Foundation, bbrfoundation.org.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. also at Burke Tubbs, Forreston. Burial will be in Adeline Cemetery. A memorial has been established.

of corn.

Beverly A. Weber, 94, a longtime member of the Dixon community, died on Thursday, June 20, 2019 in Metamora after a brief battle with cancer.

Bev was born on Dec. 3, 1924 in Mattoon to Frank and Gertrude Roberts Barber.

She was raised on a farm in Neoga with her parents and two brothers.

Bev met her husband Stanley Weber at the University of Illinois and they were married on Aug. 31, 1947 at the First Presbyterian Church of Neoga.

The education system brought Bev and Stan to Dixon in 1963.

Bev retired from teaching at the Dixon

May 19, 1989.

She worked on the family farm. Lucille loved dogs, and she raised and showed Samoyed dogs.

June 22 Blake D. Ebersole, 28, of Sterling, was stopped for failure to signal when required on Fourth Avenue at Third Street in Rock Falls at 1:05 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to signal when required and failure to notify the secretary of state of an address change. He was released

after posting his IL driver’s license and a $1,000 I-Bond.

Julian M. Robledo, 30, of Rockford, was stopped for speeding on I-39 northbound at milepost 109 in Ogle County at 7:14 p.m. and charged with driving while license suspended, expired registration, child restraint violation, and speeding. He was released on a $1,500 I-Bond.

Manuel Nunez, 40, of DeKalb, was stopped for speeding on Illinois 38 at Woodlawn Road in Ogle County at 12:15 a.m. and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, endangering the life of a child and speeding. He was released after posting his driver’s license and a

$1,000 I-Bond.

June 23 The Illinois State Police investigated a two-vehicle crash at 1:36 a.m. involving a Savanna Police Department squad car.

The investigation revealed Christopher M. Kniss, 21, of Lanark, was driving a 2009 Dodge Ram pickup truck eastbound on Chicago Avenue at Keller Street when he drifted out of his lane to the right while manipulating his cell phone, side-swiping a Savanna Police Department squad car stopped on the shoulder and occupied by Officer Randy Craft.

Kniss was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the

scene of a crash, improper use of cell phone, improper lane usage, and expired registration.

There were no injuries and Kniss was released on an I-bond.
