Rain thins out crowd for River Fest BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Last Saturday’s afternoon deluge was definitely not what the organizers of Oregon’s Rockin’ River Fest had in mind. “The rain did not help us. We’ve had the festival for three years and had three years of rain,” said Donna Mann, president of the Oregon Chamber of Commerce. “It was raining when we opened the gates, and it rained again in the evening so we had to close down early.” Rockin’ River Fest executive team member Debbie Dickson agreed. “We’re getting very good at adapting to Mother Nature — that’s for certain,” Dickson said. “Although the start of the rain coincided with the time the gates opened, folks came out to support the event despite the temporary conditions.” Oregon Together co-sponsors the festival along with the chamber. An estimated 750 people attended, about half what organizers had anticipated. “Our attendance wasn’t what we had hoped for, but I think everyone there had a good time,” Mann said. Dickson said the day wasn’t a total wash-out. “We had a lot of families with small children and the weather cleared up by 2 p.m., allowing the Tug Across the Rock to proceed,” Dickson said. “The gang from Tipsy Hog took first place bragging rights from two-time champions E. D. Etnyre this year — a major feat!” Teams of tuggers compete from the

Chicken ordinance is tabled again BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The Oregon City Council tabled a proposed ordinance to allow chickens within the city limits for a second time last week after two residents objected and a commissioner raised questions. Commissioner Tim Krug asked June 11 to table the ordinance to allow small backyard flocks because he said he wanted to do more research. The Planning Commission has been discussing the matter for several months and recommended the new ordinance to the city council. The current ordinance prohibits chickens within the city limits, but several residents have requested it be changed. Krug told the council he had a customer at his business who had tried raising chickens but quit because of

problems, including health issues, she encountered at her home in Bartlett, a community that allows the practice. He also said lots in Oregon are smaller than those in Bartlett, a northwest suburb of Chicago with a population of more than 40,000. Lee Hadick, an Oregon resident, agreed that the smaller lots pose a problem because neighbors would be closer to the small flocks. He also said a realtor told him that having chickens next door could adversely affect property values. “I like chickens but I don’t think they belong here,” Hadick said. Another resident, Patricia Stroh, said she is concerned the chickens might attract other animals. “We’ve already seen foxes and deer near our home,” she said. Public Health & Safety Commission-

er Kurt Wilson said a survey done by the Planning Commission indicated 80 percent of the residents who responded favored allowing chickens. He said he has heard of no health concerns while researching the issue. The council also tabled the ordinance on May 28 because commissioners wanted more specific design rules for how coops and pens will be constructed. The proposed ordinance limits the number of chickens to six and prohibits roosters entirely. The birds must be kept in an enclosure or coop and within a fenced yard at all times. They can be kept only on residential property and must be in the rear yard. All feed must be stored in rodent-proof containers, and the chicken facilities must be kept clean and odor-free.

The Oregon Park District will offer its second Farm to Table Dinner, on Friday, July 26. The Farm-to-Table Dinner is designed to put food on the table directly from the farm without going through a store, or distributor. “We come very close to that,” said Debbie Leffelman, event coordinator for the Oregon Park District. “The district offered a Farm to Table Dinner Fundraiser last year and it was so popular that the community asked for another one. “After being recognized by the Illinois Parks & Recreation Association and honored with the award for Outstanding Special Event in 2018, we had to offer the dinner again.” Leffelman said. The event is a winwin for the community. People love to eat good and fresh food. “Our celebrity chefs have put together a great menu and will offer an amazing meal for our guests to enjoy while also benefiting the

youth of the community,” she said The Farm to Table Dinner will be held at Oak Lane, just east of Oregon. Local celebrity chefs, from local restaurants or businesses, volunteer their time and cooking talents to prepare meals with as many of the ingredients as possible harvested locally. The menu for the evening includes appetizers, garden salad, artisan breads, honey butter, ribeye steak, pork kabob, mixed summer vegetables and a dessert sampler. Several local growers as well as the Oregon Market Vendors donate the items for the dinner and some of the ingredients are grown at the community garden in Oregon. “It’s a collaborative effort with many volunteers and a lot of community support,” said Leffelman. “The U of I Extension Master Gardeners work with the Camp OH-PEA-DEE kids to create the centerpieces. The Groenhagen Family and Circle G Farms sponsor the entertainment for the evening which is Dina Bach Music.”

The Byron City Council recently rejected a similar ordinance proposal, and the Mt. Morris Village Board turned down a request on Feb. 26 from a 10-year-old boy who wanted to raise four to six chickens as a 4-H project.

The Oregon Park District has joined Oregon community leaders to offer educational historic walking tours through Oregon and the nearby surrounding area. “We will not walk far, just long enough to gain a wealth of knowledge,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation. Participants should meet at the tour location. Each tour is $2 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $3 for non-residents.

Nelson Memorial Walk July 4 Join Mt. Morris community along with people from across the U.S. for the 17th annual Lois Nelson Memorial Walk and Fun Run this year as “Pound the Pavement” begins on Thursday, July 4 at 9 a.m. at Dillehay Park in Mt. This family friendly and now traditional 4th of July community event is also a fundraiser for Northwest Illinois Special Olympics, as Nelson worked with developmentally disabled adults as her vocation and also supporting the Let Freedom Ring Festival. It follows the route that Nelson walked every day, in any kind of weather. April died June 6, 2018 at age 37, just a few weeks shy of the fundraiser she spearheaded. Through it all, she was determined to pay it forward by helping raise money for the KB Fund, which was established to help those in the

community who are burdened by medical costs. The KB Tough Run is the major fundraising event for the fund, which has helped more than 40 whose needs have stemmed from cancer diagnosis, life-threatening burns, premature birth, automobile accidents, surgery, and many other issues that present unexpected expenses that health insurance, if they have it, does not cover. Class of 1936 entered school during Depression Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The Oregon High School Class of 1936 entered high school at the beginning of the Great Depression, so at graduation time there was no money for an annual [yearbook], a custom for years. The school building then housed some of the grade school as well as the high school. The first floor of the school building had space for the fifth through eighth grades. High school classes were on the second and third floors and in the basement. The country students who graduated from schools in the high school district had to furnish their own transportation to and from school. Many of the country students were unable to go to high school. Because there was no gym in the 1898 building, students either walked to the Coliseum or played on a field southwest of the school. Basketball practice and games were at the Coliseum and football practice and games were at the old Ogle County Fairgrounds, now a subdivision on the north end of Oregon. Two years after they graduated a new high school with gym was built on the end of Madison Street and bus transportation also became available. Thirty-six students received their Oregon High School diplomas in 1936. Their first grade class of 1924-25 had 48 students. At this time Ruby Nash was teaching first grade. Roland Kiest was the principal plus teaching chemistry and physics. Laura Wiseman (Kloster) was teaching English and Vivian Holmes was teaching music. They also were teaching those subjects when I graduated from high school in 1953. The following appeared in the 1936 Oregon High School newspaper, typed and mimeographed at school. The headlines in the March 6, Wings “OCHS Wins Regional Tourney-Defeats Polo 16-14 in second Overtime Period-To Play In Sectional Tournament At Freeport.” Jenkins and Rhoads were high scorers with six points apiece. The victory made Oregon Champion of the Region and winner of the

regional trophy which was soon on display in the halls. The interchanging of cheer leaders for yells was a great factor in promoting good-will among the schools participating in the tournament. The “Noisy Seven, one of the greatest little cheering sections in this part of the State,” was a group of boys giving some yells “on their own hook.” The May 29 issue of Wings recorded the results of the voting for favorite students. The most popular boy was Mervin Rhoads, most popular girl Viola Koontz, best dressed boy was Frank Benesh and best dressed girl Dorothy Churchill. The best matched couple was Donald Mattison and Vera Leary. The list continued. Mervin Rhoads is the father of Richard Rhoads. Richard is a valuable member of

the Oregon Depot Committee and Donald Mattison and Vera Leary are the parents of my loving wife Marilyn. The juniors and seniors held their annual dinner dance at the Country Club on May 8 from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. A short program was given between each course of the dinner. Dancing to Al Lind’s band from Rochelle finished the evening’s entertainment. The last will and testament of the class of 1936 was in the May 29, 1936 Wings. The following are a sample of these: I, Mervin Rhoads, leave some of my height to Hugh Farrell. I, Chester Sharick, leave my place in the football line-up to Charles Koontz. I, Charles Woolridge, leave my hat to Kenneth Gruber.

I, Edward Lindsay, leave my ability to act to Donald Cole. I, Lorraine Eckerd, do bequeath some of my gift of gab to Mary Fletcher. And finally Charles Buczkowski, I bequeath my job as usher at basketball games to Robert Mammenga. (They played and practiced basketball at the coliseum.) The Nov. 27 Wings announced “The Gypsy Rover Coming.” “The Oregon High School Mixed Chorus will give their annual musical comedy ‘The Gypsy Rover’ December 10th at the Coliseum. An admission price of 25 and 15 cents will be charged. Senior Harry Wade will play the character Rob later known as Sir Gilbert Howe,” it read. Memories from the graduating class of 1936 at Oregon Community High School is located at the Ogle County Historical Society.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS Those Were The Days will be held on Saturday, June 29 at 10 a.m. at the Oregon Depot. The speaker, Kris Gilbert, will be talking about her many years of researching and photographing cemeteries in Ogle County. She is currently in the process of collecting the longi-

tude and latitude of every known grave in the county so that a permanent record is available for the future. Gilbert is the current president of the Ogle County Historical Society, Depot Board member, and the coordinator for the GIS Partnership of Ogle County.

The first of these programs is a presentation on the Korean War and Private First Class Charles Swenson. Carol and Dale DeWall on their wedding day on June 28, 1959.

Dale and Carol (Antonsen) DeWall are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary on June 28. The couple were married on June 28, 1959 at Faith Evangelical United Brethren in Freeport. They are lifelong members at Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston. Dale and Carol have three children, Debbie (and husband John) Stierwalt of Spokane, Washington, Craig (and wife Barb) DeWall of McKinney, Texas, and Brian (and wife Bonnie) DeWall of Forreston.

They also have six grandchildren, Alexandra Lappano, Larisa Gasparine-Young, and Ermina Stierwalt, all from Spokane, Washington, Matt DeWall from McKinney, Texas, and Breana DeWall and Cole DeWall from Forreston. During their 60 years of marriage, they lived and farmed south of Forreston.

Serenity offers volunteer training Serenity will offer a volunteer training course for anyone interested in working directly with patients and their families on Thursday, June 27 and Thursday, July 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Serenity Home, 1658 S. Illinois 2 near Oregon.Â Â Some hours of self-paced learning at home will be included. The Byron Forest Preserve District will have a special guided Bobolink Walking Tour at its Bald Hill Prairie Preserve on June 22 starting at 8 a.m. at the preserveâ€™s parking lot located at 5502 North Silver Creek Road, Mt. Morris. Join naturalists Susan Kleiman and Mark Herman to view several rare nesting grassland birds that will include bobolinks, eastern meadowlarks, dickcissels, Henslowâ€™s sparrows, grasshopper sparrows, and others.Â The Bald Hill Prairie Preserve was purchased by the Byron Forest Preserve District in November 2017 thanks to a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation because the preserveâ€™s rolling landscape was prime habitat for a wide variety of increasingly rare ground nesting grassland birds that include bobolinks, short-eared owls and northern harriers.Â

Lois Elaine Erickson, 94, died peacefully on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the Pinecrest Nursing Home, Mt. Morris, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 30, 1924 on the Robinson family farm in Chadwick, to Glenn and Hazel (Robinson) Kendell. She moved to Ashton in 1927 with her family, graduated from Ashton High School in 1942. Following graduation she attended Northern Illinois Teachers College, DeKalb, for one year. She worked at the Green River Ordinance Plant for two years during War World II. Lois was married to her life long love Ralph E. Erickson on Feb. 25, 1944 in Dixon. He preceded her in death Aug.6, 2006 after 62 years of marriage. Lois was a business partner with her husband Ralph running a Hawthorn Melody Milk business for 16 years in Ashton and surrounding communities.

difference in anyway they could. She also enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and of course watching the Cubs play. Genevieve “Picky” L. Horton, 79, of Polo, passed away Saturday June 15, 2019 at KSB Hospital in Dixon. Picky was born Aug. 31, 1939 in Polo, the daughter of Jack and Ruth (Horton) Ludwick. She was united in marriage to Harlem Horton on July 15, 1959 in Oregon.

She was also a loving mother and homemaker to their five children. She was a long time member of the Ashton Bible Church, attending services regularly and assisting with Bible School and other activities. She was elected to the Ashton Village Board as the first woman trustee from 1975 to 1979. She was recognized by the board on Oct. 10, 2010 with a declaration of “Lois Erickson Day.” She served on the Ashton All Class Reunion Committee from 1979 to 2004. She loved walking at the Mills and Petrie building, gardening, and was an avid reader, and hosting the annual family Memorial Day picnic for more than 40 years. She loved attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting events. She also enjoyed watching sports on TV. Survivors include a brother, Richard

OBITUARY ALAN J. WIENEKE Alan J. Wieneke, 73, of Mt. Morris, died on Sunday June 16, 2019 at OSF St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford. Al was born on June 14, 1946 in Monticello, Iowa, the son of Joe and Mildred (Moorman) Wieneke. He graduated from Morrison High School class of 1964; he attended Western Illinois University, Clinton Community College; and he graduated from Chicago Automation Institute and Sauk Valley Community College.

Al served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1971. Al married Carol Mather on Aug.14, 1971, Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. Al worked for Kable News Company from 1971 to 2009, retiring after 38 years. He was a past member of the Mt. Morris Village Board and he served on the board of directors for the Kable Credit Union (Rockford Bell Credit Union). Al loved to play golf and enjoyed

watching all kinds of sports; he enjoyed his time with his family, especially watching and being with his grandchildren. Al is survived by his wife, Carol Wieneke, Mt. Morris; two children, Mark (Ellen Tarr) Wieneke, Rockford, and Melissa (Scott) Pergande, Buffalo Grove; three grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Carly, and Adam Pergande, Buffalo Grove; four brothers, Bob (Diane) Wieneke, Brownsville, Wisconsin, Dick (Andi) Wieneke, Morrison, Gary (Fran) Wieneke, She-

The Oregon City Council planned to vote at its June 11 meeting on Ordinance 2019-104 to allow chickens in the city limits. Yes, in the city limits. We spoke against this action — one reason being they may attract other undesirable animals and we have already seen foxes and deer here in our south end recently. Smell and noise hardly needed mentioning. Also brought up was our small lots and the possibility of lowered property values.
