Police seek info after store clerk threatened Oregon Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a man who threatened a clerk at the Dollar General on West Pines Road last week. Police Chief Darin DeHaan said the clerk had propped the door open to bring displays inside on June 5 at 9:36 p.m. when the man followed her into the store and pulled the door shut behind him. He then told her, “I’m going to drug you.” The clerk fled from him into the back

of the store where a manager was, and man left the store. He is described as a white male in his 50s or early 60s approximately five feet eight inches tall. He was wearing a blue hoodie and had the hood pulled tight around his face. He was wearing sunglasses. Police believe the man headed east from the store on foot, but he may have had a vehicle closeby. Anyone with any information is asked

to call the police at 815-732-2162. “If you live along South 10th Street and have any Ring or other surveillance video we ask that you look through your videos for June 5 around 9:40 p.m.,” DeHaan posted on the department’s Facebook page. Videos of the incident are posted on Facebook. “We certainly want to get him identified,” DeHaan said Tuesday.

OPD’s free concerts shine under sunny skies Mother Nature has been doing her part to make sure the Oregon Park District’s Concert in the Park 2019 series gets off to a great start. The Tuesday night concerts are free and held at Oregon Park West from 7-8:30 p.m. On June 4, 540 participants took part in the Color Run prior to an entertaining performance by The Hat Guys, sponsored by the City of Oregon. On Tuesday. Heartache Tonight, sponsored by KSB Oregon Clinic, took the stage under sunny skies and mild tem-

peratures. “Bring your lawn chair, blanket, picnic basket and wear your dancing shoes!,” said Debbie Leffelmann, event coordinator. Enjoy a variety of music, yard games, and family fun. We thank the sponsors for bringing great entertainment to Park West for all ages.” Giveaways are provided by many sponsors, while supplies last. Dogs and alcohol are prohibited at the concerts.

LAW ENFORCEMENT EVENT

Flame of Hope travels through Oregon for Special Olympics law enforcement. People from the Village of Progress greeted Spurbeck and law enforcement on the courthouse lawn, handing out water before they ran the final segment. Earlier this month, 20 athletes from the Village of Progress (VOP) competed in 32 events. Four

athletes from the Village of Progress won gold medals qualifying for the summer games on June 8 and 9 in Bloomington. The Flame of Hope is transported from community to community until it reaches Bloomington for the opening ceremony.

Art show to raise funds for Taft statue dedication BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A local art show is raising funds for a dedication ceremony of the Black Hawk Statue in October. Jan Stilson, a member of Oregon’s Black Hawk Art, Restoration & Development Committee, has organized the show, which will run through Sept. 14 and includes drawings and photos of the statue as well as other scenes. The art pieces are on display in the dining room at Scoops, 113 N. Fourth St., Oregon, and are for sale for a donation. Stilson said the dedication will be held after restoration work planned for this summer is completed. “We’ll have the dedication at feet of the statue maybe during Autumn on Parade,” she said. The art show was also organized to let the public know that the committee, originally known as Oregon Together’s Black Hawk Restoration Team, is still active. With the money raised for the repairs to the 108-year-old concrete monument that stands at Lowden State Park, the committee has

Photo by Vinde Wells changed its name and its focus to include other art projects in the area. “We want to take on a project every year,” Stilson said. She praised the community sup-

port of the committee’s efforts. “People have been very generous in the last year and a half,” she said. “They have donated time, money, and items such as the art work in this show.”

After a few months of fundraising, the committee secured the final $225,000 needed to repair the statue last September through individual and corporate donations. Currently, the monument remains wrapped in the black plastic used to protect it from the winter weather. The wet, cold spring has somewhat delayed the start date for the repairs. “Everything is ready to go but they have been waiting for the weather,” Stilson said. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, which has jurisdiction over the statue, has hired Quality Restorations Inc., of Wood Dale, to do the work. The Illinois Conservation Foundation is also a party in the work contracts. The statue, created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1910 as a tribute to Native Americans, is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Rock River. Time and weather have significantly damaged the surface of the landmark, which was unveiled in 1911. For more information about the art show call Stilson at 815-732-7439.

Rockin’ River Fest,will be held on Saturday, June 15 in Oregon. The event includes outdoor fun, interactive games for the young and young at heart, local food, live entertainment, competitive events, and a beer garden. The majority of the activities take place on the banks of the Rock River, on north Second Street between Franklin and Washington Streets. The “Adventure Triathlon” co-hosted with the Oregon Park District, kicks off at Oregon Park East before the event gates open. Again, for safety and sanitary issues, please leave your pets at home. Mt. Morris. The LOMC Swing Choir is made up of young people in grades 9-12 from Illinois. They are under the direction of Chris Parkinson, of Freeport. The choreographer is Katelin Parkinson, of Freeport.

The Swing Choir is on tour for eight days following a week of rehearsals and activities at LOMC. This year they will travel throughout central and northern Illinois and the Chicago metro area, including a stop in Wisconsin.

Second Oregon depot burned to the ground in 1893 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The Nov. 10, 1893 headline in the Oregon newspaper read — “(Gone up in Smoke) The Oregon Depot Burns to the Ground, loss over $3,000 insured.” “Early Saturday morning, just at the prep of day, the fierce alarm of the fire bell sounded and around the city in the south the sky was lighted a lurid red and the half-awake hero jumped in his clothes with a vague idea that maybe the poor farm was on fire and a second look and the whole of paper-town seemed ablaze,” the article read. “There was a hurrying of steps, and a rush of hose carts that were wheeled to the last fire plug, but a half mile was too long a reach, even for Oregon’s fire supply. “A run was made for the depot, but the first arrival was too late to be of assistance and only a heap of coals remained of the building that had done service for 20 years or more for the convenience of the passenger and freight traffic.” “The waiters and dining car cooks had a narrow escape the The second Oregon Depot burned to the ground in 1893. Oregon, once had a two-story depot on the CB&Q Railroad, now the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Part of this building was saved and moved west of the depot serving as a freight office. The Dixon Telegraph newspaper noted that John Mahoney was moving the telegraph office and other items into the new depot. This article noted John would decorate the new office with signs other that the ones in the first depot. Those were “God Bless Our Home”’ and “He Who Hesitates is Lost.” The depot that stands today was built by the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railway in 1913 serving passengers until 1971. Thanks to Congressman Frank Lowden at this time we have this upscale depot. His wife was Florence Pullman, daughter of George Pullman. At one time we had 19 depots in Ogle County. Two of these are still standing. Besides the Oregon Depot, the depot in Rochelle is used by the CB&Q [now Burlington Northern Santa Fe] for office space.

Members of the Oregon Rotary Club Foundation, Inc. congratulate the Oregon High School students who have been selected for its 2019 scholarships. Two of these students have also been selected to receive the additional honor of being named as Catherin Ehnen Co-Scholars. The awards were presented May 20 at OHS Honors Night.

Tessa Burger and Grace Mongan were designated as the annual Oregon Rotary Club Foundation’s Catherine Ehnen Scholars and, as such, will each receive an award of $2,500 each. Hannah Donaldson, Blake Donmeyer, Abigail Hopkins, Rebecca Hough, Daysha McLain, and Austin Strite were chosen as the 2019 high school applicants whom best upheld

the ideals of the Oregon Rotary Foundation and will be awarded $1,500 each. Each scholarship recipient will receive a check to be delivered to their college of choice in the fall. The Oregon Rotary Club Foundation program began in 1984 with one $500 college scholarship being awarded. In 2014, the program expanded

to include graduating High School seniors as well as college students. Over the course of these 35 years, the program has awarded more than $314,550 to 177 students who displayed the ideals of Rotary International. Each year, the Oregon Rotary Club Foundation Board selects recipients whom the board feels meets the ideals of Rotary International.

Strite awarded LaVerne Adams Scholarship

Ogle County Clerk Laura J. Cook issued the following marriage licenses.

Oregon High School senior Austin Strite was chosen by the Foundation for Focus House Scholarship Committee as the recipient of the LaVerne Adams Scholarship for $500. Strite is currently enrolled at Highland Community College, Freeport, and is pursuing a dual degree in Civil Engineering and Agricultural Business. The John Deere Historic Site kicks off its season of special events with its annual Music & Crafting Through Time Festival on Sunday, June 23 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. This event pairs the entertainment of local musicians with a variety of pioneer-era crafters and artisans demonstrating and selling their wares. Attendees will learn about candle-making, basket-weaving, broom-making, quilting, tatting, and soap-making. Children of all ages can also participate in a variety of old-fashioned games like hoop rolling, graces, and potato sack races. “Our Music & Crafting Through

Time Festival is a great opportunity to have some fun, the old-fashioned way,” said Kristen Veto, manager for the John Deere Historic Site. “In addition to enjoying a relaxing day of listening to local musicians and learning about pioneering crafts, guests can also experience everything the Historic Site has to offer, including demonstrations by our blacksmith and guided tours of John Deere’s home.” The performance schedule for the day includes rock and blues musician, Robbie Leblanc from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and easy rock band, Burn N’ Bush from 1 to 3 p.m. Crafting demonstrations will take place throughout the day.

MT. MORRIS EVENT

Memorial Walk is July 4 Pound the Pavement is a scenic walk and fun run that travels approximately four miles around the streets of Mt. Morris. It follows the route that Nelson walked every day, in any kind of weather. More than $12,000 was raised last year with total proceeds over the past years exceeding $110,000 and allocated to the above organizations. ELKHORN CREEK EVENT

Dragonfly walk set for June 21 Hosted by Northwest Illinois Audubon Society, Cindy and John McKee will share their knowledge of dragonflies and damselflies on Saturday, June 22 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Elkhorn Creek Preserve southwest of Forreston. Cindy and John will walk the preserve with participants to capture, identify, and observe these marvelous flying insects. All ages including families are encouraged to attend.

Binoculars, sunscreen, insect repellent and water are suggested. Refreshments will be available in a shaded area. Portable restrooms will be available at the site. Join Mt. Morris community along with people from across the U.S. for the 17th annual Lois Nelson Memorial Walk and Fun Run this year as “Pound the Pavement” begins on Thursday, July 4 at 9 a.m. at Dillehay Park in Mt. Morris. Last year more than 200 walkers and runners, bikers and strollers joined in along with 60 sponsors to support the walk. This family friendly and now traditional 4th of July community event is also a fundraiser for Northwest Illinois Special Olympics, as Nelson worked with developmentally disabled adults as her vocation and also supporting the Let Freedom Ring Festival.

A hot dog vendor and ice cream truck will be on site for the day, but picnic baskets are also welcomed. Attendees should know that alcoholic beverages are not allowed on the grounds. Guests are also encouraged to bring a blanket or lawn chairs to the event. Other special events at the Historic Site this season include: Green Iron Days, Aug. 2-4 - A unique biennial event brings together vintage tractor owners displaying their legendary John Deere machines. Crop marketing workshop slated for June 19 in Rock Falls

The Lee, Carroll, Ogle and Whiteside County Farm Bureaus along with Country Financial will host a crop marketing workshop on Wednesday, June 19 at 7 p.m. at the Days Inn in Rock Falls.

“Crop Marketing Strategies to Survive the Current Farm Economy” is a two-hour seminar designed specifically for producers to help them manage risk associated with the current low commodity markets and identify market conditions to capture profit margins through 2019 and into 2020.

Dr. Steve Johnson, Iowa State University Extension Farm Management Specialist, will facilitate the program. During the two-hour program producers will examine the following topics: • Supply Demand and Crop Price Outlook, • Marketing Strategies & Tools, • Seasonal Futures Price and Basis Trends, • Consider Your Cash Flow Needs.

PUBLIC VOICE Timberlake production will entertain all ages Dear Editor, Run! Don’t walk! To see Timberlake Playhouse’s production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” which is being featured through June 16. I thought the show would be mainly for children but I believe adults will enjoy it even more. The special effects include more flying (err….swimming) than in Peter Pan, amazing staging techniques, outstanding voices, delightful dancing, and ingenious costumes. Chana School Museum annual sale was successful Dear Editor, The Chana School Museum’s annual rummage sale was an event that brought many folks out regardless of the bad weather. There were smiles on many faces as young and old found treasures to take home. The funds raised this year were the greatest yet of the 20-plus years of organizing and running the sale. Why was the sale a major success? Was it the bad weather that brought people out knowing that the Oregon Coliseum would shelter the event, or the incredible donations at bargain prices that attracted the buyers. Maybe both! Regardless, the Oregon Coliseum was packed to just about overflowing with a variety of items. The sale had even unusual things like a “suitcase table” and an expensive electric self-raising computer table. Thanks to Kathy and George Bouska there was an enormous offering of teaching materials for teachers and parents.

Plants sold quickly and were donated to the sale by Tim and Penny O’Rourke, Earlyne Warmolts, Jennifer Kaffenbarger, and me. This event was a success for several reasons. First, it generated funds that help maintain the old 1883 schoolhouse. The Chana School Museum runs totally on donations and grants. Volunteers saved the school, restored it, run programs for children, and maintain the building. The second reason the sale was a success was that there were items brought to the sale that could be used at the museum, such as vintage clothing, office supplies, and a 42-inch flat screen TV. The third reason this event was a success was the fact that people met people and had a good time. Everyone enjoyed the community spirit that was generated. Customers were happy getting a super deal. Volunteers gained a remarkable feeling of making a difference by organizing an event, making the selling area well arranged to attract buyers, and providing an opportunity for folks to visit with one another. Thanks to the City of Oregon, the Chana School Foundation was able to use the Coliseum again this year for this fundraiser. The location is perfect for people coming into town for groceries and other tasks or the folks passing through town using highways 2 and 64 who can easily see that there is an event going on at the Coliseum. Thanks also goes to the newspapers for their great coverage to get the word out to all their readers, Merlin’s Greenhouse for their donation, all the businesses that allowed posters to be displayed before the May 24 and 25 event, the volunteers who were busy for five days dealing with various aspects of the event, and all those who provided items for the sale. It is amazing that the castoffs of one

person can be a treasure to someone else and even benefit a cause. Connie Stauffer Chana School Foundation

LR Lions Club says thanks for support of festival Dear Editor, The Leaf River Lions want to thank all of the supporters of Leaf River Summer Daze. Even the weather supported our weekend! Also thanks to all of the other Leaf River organizations that contributed to all the events that were available. The Leaf River Busy Beavers, Mary Martha Club, River Valley Complex, the Leaf River Firemen’s Association, as well as the Forreston FFA Alumni. Thanks also to the Bertolet Memorial Library as well as the Bertolet Foundation. Without community support festivals like ours would not be able to continue. The Lions want to specifically acknowledge those that contributed to our fireworks, either as individuals or organization, you help is greatly appreciated. First all of those “anonymous” donators that put money in the can at our breakfasts, the Mary Martha Club, Leaf River Grange, Jerry Wickam American Legion and Chuck and Deb Buser. Thanks so much!

I could go on and mention numerous individuals for their participation and selfless time they’ve given, but I’m afraid I’d miss someone, and you know who you are. Thanks! And for those of you that did not attend any of the Summer Daze events, it was your loss. Communities the size of Leaf River need everyone to be working and supporting each other. Without that type of support, events like Summer Daze will eventually be lost. The Lions Raffle winners are: $500 to Ellie Wells, $100 winners were David Clearwater, Linda Schreiber, and Stephanie Wheeler. The $100 Eickman’s gift certificate was won by Caleb Worley. The overnight stay at White Pines Lodge went to Connie Hartje. Shirley Barber won the $50 prize and Kathy Wilken won the Mary Kay gift basket. The Lowell Milken Center (LMC) for Unsung Heroes, an international educational non-profit, has awarded Oregon Community Unit School District Elementary School Art Teacher Jordan DeWilde with the LMC Fellowship, a week-long program geared towards collaborating with fellow teachers from across the nation to communicate the stories of Unsung Heroes in history. “Jordan’s innovative and inclusive implementation of art curriculum with a diverse population of student artists set him apart as a positive role model for both students

and other educators,” said LMC Executive Director Norm Conrad. “He will be a truly inspirational member of our Fellowship.” The LMC Fellowship is awarded on the basis of merit to educators who have distinguished themselves in teaching respect and understanding through project-based learning or who have the potential for this distinction. Washington and S. 5th Streets involving a 2000 Mack Semi driven by Kerry L. Hix, 64, of Oswego, and a 2003 Honda driven by Amy M. Branscomb, 36, of Chadwick. No citations were issued. Madeline M. Wright, 28, of Freeport, was arrested at 2:31 p.m. for driving while license suspended. FATAL ACCIDENT

A Monroe Center man died June 5 when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving struck several trees southwest of Monroe Center. Larry Shearer, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in the 4900 block of North Wendorf Road. According to a press release from Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle, Shearer was operating

an ATV on a residential driveway when the vehicle went out of control and struck the trees, causing him to be ejected. The crash occurred at 7:50 p.m. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Ogle County Coroner and Monroe Center Fire and Ambulance personnel. The crash remains under investigation.

SHERIFF ARRESTS Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests. June 3 Deputies investigated a two-vehicle crash with injuries at 4:04 p.m. at the intersection of Holcomb and Meridian Roads. A vehicle driven by Beverly Lamkey, 76, of Holcomb, stopped at the intersection but then failed to yield for oncoming traffic. Lamkey continued west into the intersection and struck a northbound pickup truck driven by Jeannette Crown, 77, of Stillman Valley. Traffic is controlled at the intersection by stop signs on Holcomb Road. Traffic

on Meridian Road is not required to stop. Crown was transported to Swedish American Hospital with severe but not life-threatening injuries. Lamkey was ticketed for failure to yield at an intersection. Lynn-Scott-Rock and Stillman Valley Fire Departments assisted at the scene. June 4 Michael P. Remhof, 65, of Leaf River, was arrested for failure to reduce speed and driving under the influence of alcohol after a one-vehicle roil-over crash at 12:48 p.m. in the 400 block of East Third Street. A van driven by Remhof was westbound on Third Street when the vehicle

crossed over into the east bound lane and into the south side ditch striking an embankment. The vehicle continued westbound in the ditch striking a utility pole and tree before rolling over in the ditch and coming to a stop on its side. Remhof was extricated from the vehicle by the Leaf River Fire Department and then transported to Swedish American Hospital by the Leaf River ambulance for treatment of minor injuries. He was given an I-bond at the hospital with a July court date. Robert Hitchcock, 32, of Oregon, was arrested for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and driving under the influence of alcohol after a one-vehicle roll-over crash at 3:23 p.m. at the inter-

section of Stillman and Holcomb Roads. A car driven by Hitchcock was northbound on Stillman Road when he swerved to miss an animal causing the vehicle to enter the east side ditch and roll over into a field. Hitchcock was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he posted bond and was given a July court date. June 6 Gary L. Long, 67, of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at 8:13 a.m. in the 3,000 block of North Stillman Road. OBITUARY DONNA A. CLINE Donna A. Cline, 81, Oregon, died on Sunday, June 9, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 14, 1937 in Oregon, the daughter of Max and Callista (McMullen) Reinders. She was a lifelong Oregon area resident, growing up on a farm. Donna graduated from Oregon High School in 1955. She married Willis B. Cline on July 11, 1980 in Oregon.
