City considers allowing backyard chickens

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Chicken enthusiasts will have to wait at least another few days to find out if Oregon officials will allow backyard flocks.

The city council tabled a proposed ordinance May 28 to allow chickens within the city limits.

Commissioners wanted more specific design rules for how coops and pens will be constructed.

They are expected to discuss it and take possible action when they meet June 11.

The Planning Commission has been discussing the matter for several months and recommended the new ordinance to the city council.

The current ordinance prohibits chickens within the city limits, but several residents have requested it be changed.

Public Health & Safety Commissioner Kurt Wilson agreed that the rules should be clearly defined.

“The last thing we want to do is foul this up,” he joked.

The proposed ordinance limits the number of chickens to six and prohibits roosters entirely.

The birds must be kept in an enclosure or coop and within a fenced yard at all times.

They can be kept only on residential property and must be in the rear yard.

All feed must be stored in rodent-proof containers, and the chicken facilities must be kept clean and odor-free.

Slaughtering will not be permitted except out of sight inside a building.

Photo by Vinde Wells According to the proposed rules, anyone wanting chickens must buy an annual permit which will cost $50 for the first year and $25 in subsequent years, and pay a $50 building permit fee for the coop.

Coops must be inspected and approved by building inspector Casper Manheim.

The council also discussed limiting the number of chicken permits to 20 per year.

Mayor Ken Williams said he does not believe the number of people who will want to raise chickens will be large enough to warrant limiting the permits.

flocks is coming from the Chicago suburbs, Williams said.

“They are all over Naperville and are coming out to us,” he said.

Other Ogle County cities and villages have also had requests in recent years for similar ordinance changes.

Byron currently has an ordinance under consideration to allow chickens.

The Mt. Morris Village Board turned down a request on Feb. 26 from a 10-yearold boy who wanted to raise four to six chickens as a 4-H project.

Polo has declined to alter its ordinance, and Forreston may reconsider theirs due to a few requests.

“The success of community events like this is made possible through the support of local businesses and citizens who recognize the value of investing in their hometown. This “celebration of summer” showcases unique and engaging experiences for all ages, builds hometown pride, and is an opportunity to “give back” to the community,” Dickson said.

“This is a collaborative effort and is a direct result of volunteers brainstorming, pooling their skills and resources, and contributing hundreds of volunteer hours to create a safe, fun, entertaining time for all.”

Gates open at noon, with children under 12 FREE of charge, ages 13-17 are $3, and adults are $5.

Entry points are at Washington and Second Streets, and at Franklin and Second Street.

“Please note – proof of age is required to be served in the beer garden so be prepared to show your ID for a wristband,” Dickson said.

Rockin’ River Fest, an all ages, family friendly event will be held on Saturday, June 15 in Oregon.

The event includes outdoor fun, interactive games for the young and young at heart, local food, live entertainment, competitive events, and a beer garden.

The majority of the activities take place on the banks of the Rock River, on north Second Street between Franklin and Washington Streets.

The “Adventure Triathlon” co-hosted with the Oregon Park District, kicks off at Oregon Park East before the event gates open.

Longtime county sheriff, board member dies at 86

Brooks, 86, served the county for 50 years, beginning as a deputy sheriff in 1963, then as sheriff from 1970 to 1990, and finally on the county board for 21 years.

“Jerry Brooks meant a lot to many people in Ogle County, but everyone who knew him could honestly just call him their friend,” said Ogle County Board Chairman Kim Gouker. “Of all that we worked on together over the years, I will most remember Jerry Brooks as my friend. And, I will miss him.”

“I loved law enforcement,” Brooks said. “That’s why I took the pay cut and that’s why I ran for sheriff.”

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon.

Police said a Kings man was electrocuted May 30 while trying to lift power lines so that a truck carrying a grain bin could pass under them.

Police were called at 2:17 p.m. to Old State Road just west of Malta Road for a report of a man down in the road, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Luke T. Carmichael, 36, of the 12700 block of Illinois 64, was killed in the accident, which occurred in the rural area south of Kirkland.

Carmichael was operating a boom lift that was on the back of a semitrailer, trying to lift

overhead power lines to clear the way for a second semitrailer, which was pulling a large grain bin, according to the news release.

The metal boom lift that Carmichael was touching became electrified when it came in contact with the power lines, the release stated.

Before firefighter/paramedics could reach Carmichael, ComEd workers were called to the scene to deactivate the power lines.

Carmichael was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.

Police and the DeKalb County Coroner’s Office are investigating the incident, the release stated.

Special outing on Margaret Fuller Island in 1880 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

9, 1880 “The Margaret Fuller Island Association held a meeting at the office of Dr. H. A. Mix. The improvements of Bachelor Island and Ganymede Spring for a pleasure resort and picnic ground will be finished by Friday, Sept. 17th, and the association has set that day for opening and dedicating the spring and grounds to the public and will invite their friends to join them for a good time.”

The Chicago and Iowa railroad offered to carry passengers to and from Oregon at one-half fare.

“The Margaret Fuller Island (Island 1) in Rock River, contains about 20 acres, covered with stately trees; consisting principally of walnut, ash and elm; everyone in its most fitting place, forming lovely bowers, extended avenues and shady retreats. It is one of these ‘halycon isles’ spoken of by Margaret Fuller in her work ‘At Home and Abroad,’ just north of Oregon.

“Here swells the river in its boldest course interspersed by haleyon isles on which nature has lavished all her prodigality in tree, vine and flower, banked by noble bluffs, three hundred feet high.”

Eagle’s Nest Bluff is on the east bank of the river, opposite the island, and the view from the summit is charmed beyond description.

Fuller wrote, “I never felt so happy that I was born in America.

I do believe Rome and Florence are suburbs compared to this capital of nature’s art.”

The program followed a reunion of friends on the island and a basket picnic dinner.

Music was furnished by the Rock River Cornet Band.

After the program the guests explored Fuller Island and Eagle’s Nest Bluff.

Entertainment included steamboat rides, croquet, dancing, archery, and more.

This Margaret Fuller Island event occurred the same year the United States began building the Panama Canal, Jan. 1, 1880.

“January 9, six feet of snow in Seattle in five days.”

Eagle’s Nest Artist Colony was established eight years later in 1898.

Lorado Taft constructed the Eternal Indian now called Black Hawk in 1911.

Margaret Fuller visited Oregon in 1843, 37 years before this 1880 paper was published.

The following are excerpts from the Dec. 30, 1880 newspaper.

“An outrage - we are informed that cows have been tramping over the graves in Riverview Cemetery.

This is an outrage upon every person who has a friend at rest in that cemetery. Let it be seen to, that stock is kept out of there henceforth.”

“The C & I depot at Chana was

destroyed by fire Saturday morning. The boy who slept in the depot attributed the fire to an explosion of lamp.”

“George Phelps was run over a week ago Saturday night by a horse and buggy, as he was going home.

He was insensible for a time, and was carried home by two companions.”

A strike — “The construction men on the Chicago and Iowa road have struck for an advance of 25 cents a day have been pacified and resumed work. They are now receiving $1.75 a day.”

“A great deal of false hair that is now imported is not human, much of it being yak hair, taken from Chinese cows and other animals.”

“A tramp was arrested in Monroe the other day, and brought to the county jail, for insulting women, and other quantities of pure cussedness.”

“Of our public school teachers seven-eighths are women, and sixeighths of them are ready to desert the school room at the first offer of endurable matrimony.”

Dr. Mark McGuire, a graduate of Polo High School, University of Illinois, BS; University of Florida, MS; and Cornell University, PhD., has been awarded the 2019 University of Idaho Distinguished Professor Designation.

The award is given annually to three professors who have national and usually international recognition and have brought distinction to the University of Idaho throughout their activities.

“The older the better,” said Editor Vinde Wells. “We want to give our readers a glimpse of what living on a farm in Ogle County looked like in our grandparents day and the generations before.”

Information identifying any people who are pictured, what is happening, and where it took place should accompany the photos.

Rhythm Ramblers to perform June 14 Jamboree Lyle Grobe and the Rhythm Ramblers will return to the Mt. Morris Jamboree on Friday, June 14 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell on the downtown campus.

“This band, who’s appeared during all seven Friday concert seasons, always has the crowds line-dancing on the grass to toe-tapping while sitting in lawn chairs and on the new benches,” said event organizer Larry Ubben.

Grobe has been performing for many years starting in the early 1950s with two brothers, Harry and Richard Hackbarth.

They appeared at many shows in Lee County for years and began moving into Ogle County i n the late 50s at venues such as Castle Rock Bar on Illinois 2 south of Oregon.

Grobe was then was a radio announcer for WIXN which is now River Country 101.7 and managed the Skyline Lounge just outside of Dixon.

Many years have come and gone and Grobe still with the love of music keeps the band going by having weekly band rehearsals in his garage both summer and winter.

Drummer Dennis Milby, of Sterling, has been with Grobe since the Skyline days.

Diane Palmer usually joins the crew for these shows and sings lead and harmony vocals.

The Leaf River United Methodist Church will be on hand to serve Italian Beef sandwiches, hot dogs, chips, dessert, and drinks.

Several local small business vendors will be on the campus during the show, including Jen’s Artisan Breads and Pecatonica River Honey.

The Student Art Show continues at the Encore Old Sandstone Art Gallery next door, featuring artwork from students in the Oregon School district from 6 to 9 p.m.

The evening kicks off with the Mt. Morris Community Farmer’s Market, at the corner of Illinois 64 and Wesley Avenue from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday through October.

“Come join the fun on our beautiful, historic campus in the center of Mt. Morris, two blocks south of Riute 64 on Wesley Avenue and be ready to enjoy the sweet serenity of live music in the great outdoors,” Ubben said.

The rain location will be the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center at 101 Moose Drive.

NATURE NEWS Crosby to speak to Wild Ones about tall grass prairie Cindy Crosby will be the guest speaker at the Wild Ones meeting on Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m. at the Rock Valley College Physical Education Center PEC0110 (lower level), 3301 N. Mulford Rd., Rockford.

She will talk about “The Tallgrass Prairie: Grocery Store, Apothecary, and Love Shop.”

Native Americans and early settlers saw the tallgrass prairie as supplying groceries, art supplies, medicine, and love charms.

Crosbywill present interactive stories of prairie ethnobotany – how people used prairie plants throughout history and the potential these plants may hold for the future.

She is the author, compiler or contributor to more than 20 books, most recently “Tallgrass Conversations: In Search of the Prairie Spirit” (2019) with Thomas Dean and “The Tallgrass Prairie: An Introduction” (2017).

Her masters degree in Natural Resources is from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Daysha McLain has been selected as Oregon High School’s Senior of Distinction for the month of April.

“Because she is awesome… from her amazing smile, her positive attitude, her hard work ethic, and above all her caring attitude towards her friends, this girl has it all!, “ said Dyan Mowry, OHS Library Aide who nominated McLain.

OHS employees are asked to nominate any senior who displays qualities and talents they wish every student possessed and/or who have great grades and are involved in service to both school and community.

McLain was presented with an achievement award from Stillman Bank’s Pat Donahue.

The Mt. Morris/Oregon FFA Alumni Association will host a pork chop dinner fundraiser on Saturday, June 8 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ogle County Fairgrounds.

Funds raised will go to the FFA Alumni to support the students of the Oregon FFA Chapter through scholarships, grants and loans to start or expand record book projects, and many other things.

A live auction will be held at 7 p.m. including quilts, Adirondack chairs made

by FFA students, gift certificates, and baked goods. The public is welcome to attend.

READING MATTERS

Keep skills sharp by reading in the summer schedule School is out for the summer and schedules change.

For this month we’ll look at several ways we can help our children and grandchildren include some reading in those summer schedules.

The importance of reading during the summer months has been studied extensively and results indicate that students who do not read in the summer lose skills, often falling below reading levels they achieved during the school year.

It can be compared to an athlete who for some reason sits out a season and/or the off-season training.

It takes time to get back to the same performance levels they had previously attained.

There are a few key ideas to consider.

One is that time spent reading does matter. It would be best if it was a regular amount of time daily, but you could also work with your children or grandchildren to set a weekly goal.

COMMENTARY Mary Gardner Reading Specialist Fifteen to thirty minutes a day would be enough to make a difference. More than that would be a bonus.

This can certainly include time you read to them, no matter their age or grade in school.

A second idea is to consider a broad definition of the kinds of texts to read.

Include all kinds of books, magazines, recipes, instructions or directions, or web-based reading on various Internet sites.

Books, of course, can be electronic versions which may offer more appeal.

Any reading done in the course of every day events can count.

Think about the reading you do in

a program you receive at a baseball game or a play.

You might keep a log of all the different kinds of reading your family does over the summer.

Also consider reading a wide variety of genres.

Your children might set a goal to read at least four or five different genres over the summer.

A public librarian can help you locate new kinds of books to try.

You might have them keep a journal or a log and encourage them to write a response to each genre read trying to decide which genres they like and why.

Finally it is important to have materials to read.

Our local public libraries have active and engaging summer reading programs for all ages.

The staff members are happy to help you locate books for all ages and interests.

Children are able to set their own goals. Registration has begun, or

will be very soon.

There are also several Little Free Libraries in our communities. You may borrow books from these at any time.

One is located near the splash pad at Oregon Park West, one is inside Conover Square near the Lifeline Food Pantry, and a third is inside at the Loaves and Fish Food Pantry at the Church of the Brethren in Mt. Morris.

There is one at the Mt. Morris Mobile Home Park and one at Dillehay Park. If you can, give a book back when you borrow one.

Time spent reading plus reading all kinds and genres of texts (including digital and electronic versions) plus making sure reading materials are available equals a recipe for summer reading that will prevent a summer reading slide.

Enjoy time this summer reading to and with your children and grandchildren!

David L. Rahn’s Battle of the Books winners listed

Every school year, David L Rahn Junior High students participate in the statewide Rebecca Caudill reading project.

Rebecca Caudill was an Illinois transplant author who published more than 20 books for children.

Students in grades 4 through 8 have the opportunity to read and vote on the 20 nominated titles to select their favorite.

This year’s winning title was: Ghost.

Forty-four DLR students read at least one book on the Caudill list this past school year. Those who read three or more books were able to participate in the school’s Battle of the Books contest.

Nine students battled it out for a chance to win a trip to Town and Country Lanes May 9 for a bowling and pizza party. Winning team members included: Logan Sarver, Emily Watters, Alyssa Leary, Teagan Champley and Alexis Sabin.

Three students read all 20 books on the list and received a Barnes and Noble gift card. These three students were: Logan Sarver, Emily Watters and Mackenzie Brodkowicz. Also, each time a book was completed, stu-

dents entered their name in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate from Amazon.

Those drawn were Alyssa Leary and Mackenzie Brodkowicz.

“The 2020 list is out so you can get a head start on next year’s contest over the summer by visiting your local libraries,” said DLR Librarian Gretchen Nelson.

2018-19 sports season had interesting highlights B

efore calling it a year, let’s take a look at what 2018-19 sports had to offer for Ore-

gon.

The first thing that jumps out is the large medal haul by the wrestling team. In its best showing in well over a decade, Andrew Herbst, Jacob Milliman, Noah Paul and Chase Clark all placed at Champaign for the Hawks.

Oregon has a strong mat tradition and what these young men accomplished rekindled those glory days.

Here’s to a continuation of that.

Top overall individual performance was Jake Mennen breaking the school record in the pole vault and placing second at state to the No. 12 vaulter in the nation.

He caught the vaulting bug as an eighth grader and was on a mission since then, culminating in a storybook day downstate after two previous bad outings in Charleston.

Don’t forget about Austin Strite making it downstate in bowling the second year in a row, to close out a standout career. Track gives out medals in 18 events, whereas bowling only has one route to a state place.

The girls track and field team did something never done at Oregon before - win the BNC title. That in

itself is worthy of top achievement for girls sports.

A small detail overlooked is coach Nick Schneiderman conditioning the girls better than any other team around.

Looking ahead to the future, things should only get better with all the young talent, including Brenna Noon, who might give long-time throwing coach Doug Engel his first ever state champ.

The girls soccer team was outstanding, as well, with a sectional final appearance in only its third year. What more can be said about that and kudos to coach Seger Larson.

Athlete of the year goes to Dalton Hermes, the closest OHS has to the all-American type in football, basketball and baseball.

Honorable mention goes to Jackson Buck, though not possessing Hermes’ physical traits, Buck persevered as a small guy, culminating in a state appearance in track.

For top girl, you can’t go wrong with the personable Abi Hopkins, who leads on and off the field.

2019-20 Outlook The biggest question going into 2019-20 is whether or not a senior-laden boys basketball team can be a factor? With 4-year starter Trey Woolsey leading the cast, it promises to be an interesting year.

For the second year in a row, volleyball graduated a D-I recruit. This time, it was Bailey Nelson, headed to DePaul. With primarily juniors returning, who will step up for the team this year?

Football will also have a junior class feel to it and the continuing saga will be whether or not enough depth is present. Byron and Stillman will be the teams to beat in the BNC, with Oregon a distinct possibility to win the magic number of five needed to the playoffs. It is imperative that any close game be won.

Girls basketball has genuine playmaker in Olivia Lambrigtsen coming back, but will there be enough of a supporting cast?

With all underclassmen, the girls bowling team should continue to get better and better. The same with softball.

In a historic vote among its member schools, the IHSA has decided to go to a district format in football for the 2020 year.

The only things that created more of a stir in the past 50 years of Illinois prep sports were eliminating the 1-class system for boys basketball and adding interscholastic sports for females.

A major change for next year are enrollment classifications being expanded. Volleyball, softball, baseball and basketball will top out at 697 in 2A, a much-higher figure than in the past.

That will make the post season more competitive for Oregon. Additionally, 1A wrestling is bumped up to 788, putting someone like Dixon in Oregon’s regional or sectional.

The upcoming enrollment figure for Oregon is listed at 430.

That is up from the 398 this past year, but according to AD Mike Lawton, the IHSA uses a new formula for calculating that and Oregon’s may be unfairly inflated.

Before wrapping up for the year, let’s not forget about all the cheerleaders, pom pom and band members that give performances worthy of mention.

This is more than just sports.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

May 28 At 7:05 a.m., police responded to a suspicious person call in the 200 block of N. 3rd Street resulting in the arrest of Carl D. Pitt, 77, of Oregon, for criminal trespass to a vehicle. Pitt was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

May 29 At 3:42 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 200 block of W. Washington Street involving a 2005 Lincoln driven by Joshua A.

May 30 At 2:04 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Illinois 2 and Pines Road involving a 2007 Ford driven by Kari A. Jaskiewicz, 49, of Mt. Morris, and a 2013 Toyota driven by Marjory C. Krueger, 63, of Dixon. Jaskiewicz was issued citations for improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Jessamir A. Palencia, 24, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 6:09 p.m. for failure to wear a seat belt as a driver.

This violation occurred in the 300 block of Jefferson Street.

May 27 At 1:25 p.m., police investigated a hit and run traffic crash in the 100 block of S. 4th Street involving an unknown vehicle that struck a 2019 Dodge belonging to Barry L. Mingus, 52, of Oregon.

Mingus’ vehicle was parked behind the unknown vehicle. Anyone having any information, please contact the Oregon Police Department at 815-732-2162.

Larrin, 34, of Sterling, and a 2008 Ford driven by Robert M. Bushman, 66, of Mt. Morris. Larrin was arrested for driving while license suspended. Larrin was also issued citations for improper use of registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Larrin was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

May 28 Johnny Reyes, 42, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while license suspended. He was held in the Ogle County Jail in lieu of $10,000 (10%) bond pending a court appearance.

Shawn Kirby, 31, of Davis Junction, was arrested for disorderly conduct after deputies were called at 2:01 a.m. to a disturbance at 111 Autumnwood Lane. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

May 31 Stanley Josephitis, 43, of Forreston,

was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a two-vehicle crash at 9:23 p.m. in the 2800 block of West Illinois 72.

The vehicle he was driving collided with a vehicle driven by Kyle Bolen, 25, of Winnebago.

Both drivers and Bolen’s passenger, Craig McClure, 57, of Winnebago, refused medical treatment.

Josephitis was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

June 1 Sean Powers, 46, of Ashton, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of intoxicating compounds, and driving on a revoked license after a two-vehicle crash at 7:23 p.m. at Gurler and Stone

Roads.

A vehicle driven by Powers was eastbound on Gurler Road when it struck a westbound vehicle driven by Keri Spinelli-Wittenauer, 26, of Amboy.

Both were transported by Ashton ambulance to Rochelle Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.

Mark A. Velte, 25, of Leaf River, was arrested for possession of 10 to 30 grams of cannabis after a traffic stop at 11:38 p.m. at the Intersection of Illinois 72 and Triumph Road.

He was also issued a citation for improper head light, one head lamp.

Velte was then taken into custody and transported to the Ogle County Jail

where he was held in lieu of bond.

June 2 Daniel T. O’Neill, 39, of Pecatonica was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a one-vehicle crash at 5:40 p.m. at the intersection of Hoisington and Water Roads.

He was also issued citations for failure to stop at an intersection, failure to wear seat belt, failure to stop at a stop sign, reckless driving and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

He was transported by Byron ambulance to the Swedish American Hospital, Rockford.

O’Neill was issued a $3,000 (10%) individual bond, with a court date of June 26.

Lorraine James, 95, died on Tuesday June 4, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Lorraine was born on Dec. 9, 1923 in Rockford, the daughter of Fred and Ruth (Swanson) Burdick.

She graduated from Rockford West High School in the Class of 1942.

Lorraine married Leonard James on Oct. 9, 1943 in Rockford. He preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 2013.

She was a member of Christian Churches all her life where she was a Sunday School teacher, on the missionary committee for 30 years, women’s fellowship, and she was baptized at the age of 16.

Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Bob) Fulton, Mt. Morris; sons, Steve (Young Cha) James, Mt. Morris, and Bob James, Wheaton; eight grand-

children, Jason, Randy, Melissa, Faith, Joshua, Jared, Aaron, and Andrea; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Lorraine is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard; two grandchildren, Brian and Doug Fulton; three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at Finch

Funeral Home, 405 E. Hitt St., Mt. Morris, with the Pastor Merrill Davis officiating.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris.

Visitation will be on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Memorials have been established to Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris Fire Department, and Serenity Hospice and Home.

OBITUARIES GERALD D. “JERRY� BROOKS Gerald D. “Jerry� Brooks, 86, of Oregon, went home to his Lord Jesus on Sunday, June 2, 2019.  Jerry was born July 6, 1932 to Ra K. and Dorothy (Warner) Brooks and was a life-long Ogle County resident. He graduated from Oregon High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54. He married Barbara A. Jones on Jan. 10, 1953 in Augusta, Georgia.  Following his military service, Jerry worked as a salesman for Ogle Service Company and general managed a successful grain and farm supply business (Dixon Co-Op) for many years.  During this time, he began working as a part-time patrol deputy with the Ogle

County Sheriff’s Department for seven years during which he developed a passion for law enforcement. Wanting to make a difference in his community, he ran for and was elected Ogle County Sheriff in 1970.  He was re-elected to four additional terms as sheriff before retiring in 1990.  He then went on to serve 21 years as an Ogle County Board Member.  Jerry was also a life member of the Oregon V.F.W. ; a member of the American Legion, a 40-year member of the Ogle County Farm Bureau; Ogle County Grange Citizen of the Year; served 12 years as an Ogle County Republican Pre-
